Biomass and hydrocarbon production from Botryococcus braunii: A review focusing on cultivation methods

Botryococcus braunii has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its ability to produce high amounts of renewable hydrocarbons through photosynthesis. As the world shifts towards a greener future and seeks alternative sources of energy, the cultivation of B. braunii and the extraction of its hydrocarbons can potentially provide a viable solution. However, the development of a sustainable and cost-effective process for cultivating B. braunii is not without challenges. Compared to other microalgae, B. braunii grows very slowly, making it time-consuming and expensive to produce biomass. In response to these challenges, several efforts have been put into optimizing Botryococcus braunii cultivation systems to increase biomass growth and hydrocarbon production efficiency. This review presents a comparative analysis of different Botryococcus braunii cultivation systems, and the factors affecting the productivity of biomass and hydrocarbon in Botryococcus braunii are critically discussed. Attached microalgal growth offers several advantages that hold significant potential for enhancing the economic viability of microalgal fuels. Here, we propose that employing attached growth cultivation, coupled with the milking technique for hydrocarbon extraction, represents an efficient approach for generating renewable fuels from B. braunii. Nevertheless, further research is needed to ascertain the viability of large-scale implementation.

The interactive force between fat, oil, and grease (FOG) deposits and the effect of food waste disposers on kitchen drainage systems

Food waste disposers (FWDs) streamline kitchen waste management and facilitate waste classification, whether they would increase the potential of blockage in kitchen drainage system is still unknown. This study conducted a theoretical analysis of the interactive forces between fat, oil, and grease (FOG) deposits and their aggregation on pipe walls. The study involved grading food waste particles processed by FWDs using sieving and weighing techniques to determine the mean weight diameter (MWD) of various aggregations. A full-scale experimental system, implemented in a 60-m high test tower, simulated blockages in horizontal pipes of high-rise buildings. The effect of pipeline materials and particle sizes on blockage were examined by measuring the adhesion of deposits on horizontal pipes. Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis suggested that liquid bridge force is a primary factor in aggregate formation. Hand-cut particles formed aggregates with the highest MWD value. Particle size analysis revealed that sizes ranging from 2.36 to 4.75 mm, 1.18-2.36 mm, and 0.60-1.18 mm constituted over 80 % of particles ground by FWDs, with an average size of 2.16 mm. Results of full-scale experiment indicate particle diameters, friction coefficients and lipophilic coefficient significantly affected the propensity of these aggregates to adhere to pipes. Notably, particles processed by FWDs tended to cause blockages more frequently than hand-cut particles. These findings elucidate the deposition mechanism of FOG deposits and offer strategies to reduce blockages in kitchen drainage systems, such as reducing current grinding particle size by 18 % to 1.77 mm or selecting pipes like cast iron and high-density polyethylene.

Lipophilic arsenic compounds in the cultured green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

In this study, arsenic (As) speciation was investigated in the freshwater alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii treated with 20 μg/L arsenate using fractionation as well as ICP-MS/ESI-MS analyses and was compared with the known As metabolite profile of wild-grown Saccharina latissima. While the total As accumulation in C. reinhardtii was about 85% lower than in S. latissima, the relative percentage of arsenolipids was significantly higher in C. reinhardtii (57.0% vs. 5.01%). As-containing hydrocarbons and phospholipids dominated the hydrophobic As profile in S. latissima, but no As-containing hydrocarbons were detectable in C. reinhardtii. Instead for the first time, an arsenoriboside-containing phytol (AsSugPhytol) was found to dominate the hydrophobic arsenicals of C. reinhardtii. Interestingly, this compound and its relatives had so far been only found in green marine microalgae, open sea plankton (mixed assemblage), and sediments but not in brown or red macroalgae. This compound family might therefore relate to differences in the arsenic metabolism between the algae phyla.

Hydrocarbons in Formicidae: influence of chemical footprints on ant behavioral strategies

When an insect walks, it leaves chemical cues that derive from the arolium, a tarsal structure. These cues may contain important information about other species that occur in their community and can then mediate interactions of competition, predation, and information about resources with ants from their own colony. The compounds of these cues are released into the substrate in the form of chemical footprints. There are still few species studied, and little is known about the behavior of ants regarding these signals and how they use them in their interactions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the behavioral strategy of different ant species when confronted with chemical footprints left by other ants, as well as identify their compounds and their relationship with the cuticular hydrocarbon profile. The experiments were performed using a Y-maze, where in one of the arms, there were chemical footprints of their own species or of other species, and the other Y arm was footprint-free. The chemical compounds of footprints and cuticle were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results show that foragers of all species detect and respond to the presence of chemical cues in the form of footprints left by other ants. Foragers of all species followed footprints of individuals of the same species both nestmates and non-nestmates; however, Neoponera villosa avoided the footprints of Cephalotes borgmeieri, and C. borgmeieri avoided the footprints of the other two species. The chemical compositions of the cuticle and footprints are related to each other and are specific to each species.

Experimental study on the effect of Coumarone resin on the performance of SBS-modified asphalt

An inexpensive and high-performing solid Coumarone resin was added to Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) copolymer-modified asphalt to enhance its storage stability and road performance. To assess the effect of Coumarone resin dosage on the SBS-modified asphalt, a series of laboratory tests were conducted. The composite modified asphalt's segregation test was used to evaluate its storage stability, Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) and Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) tests were employed to investigate its high-temperature performance and permanent deformation resistance, and the Bending Beam Rheology (BBR) test was utilized to measure its low-temperature performance. Fluorescence microscopy was used to observe the composite modified asphalt's microstructure, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was conducted to study the changes in chemical structure during the modification process. The results showed that Coumarone resin can improve the compatibility of SBS and asphalt, improve the high-temperature performance and deformation resistance of SBS-modified asphalt, and adding an appropriate amount of Coumarone resin can help enhance the low-temperature cracking resistance of modified asphalt. The optimal dosage of Coumarone resin recommended for SBS-modified asphalt performance enhancement is 2% under the test conditions, as determined by comparing the test results of samples with various dosages.

Metagenomic analysis revealed highly diverse carbon fixation microorganisms in a petroleum-hydrocarbon-contaminated aquifer

As one of the ultimate products of hydrocarbon biodegradation, inorganic carbon always be used to evaluate hydrocarbon biodegradation rates in petroleum-hydrocarbon-contaminated (PHC) aquifers. The evaluation method was challenged because of the existence of carbon fixation microorganisms, which may uptake inorganic carbons and consequently cause the biodegradation rates to be underestimated. We wonder if there are carbon fixation microorganisms in PHC aquifers. Although an extremely limited number of carbon fixation microorganisms in PHC sites have been studied in previous studies, the vast majority of microorganisms that participate in carbon fixation have not been systematically identified. To systematically reveal carbon fixation microorganisms and their survival environmental conditions, high-throughput metagenomic sequencing technologies, which are characterized by culture-independent, unbiased, and comprehensive methods for the detection and taxonomic characterization of microorganisms, were introduced to analyze the groundwater samples collected from a PHC aquifer. Results showed that 1041 genera were annotated as carbon fixation microorganisms, which accounted for 49% of the total number of genera in the PHC aquifer. Carbon fixation genes involved in Calvin-Benson-Bassham (CBB), 3-hydroxy propionate (3HP), reductive tricarboxylic acid (rTCA), and Wood-Ljungdahl (WL) cycles accounted for 2%, 41%, 34%, and 23% of the total carbon fixation genes, respectively, and 3HP, rTCA, and WL can be deemed as the dominant carbon fixation pathways. Most of the identified carbon fixation microorganisms are potential hydrocarbon biodegraders, and the most abundant carbon fixation microorganisms, such as Microbacterium, Novosphingobium, and Reyranella, were just the most abundant microorganisms in the aquifer system. It's deduced that most of the microorganisms in the aquifer were facultative autotrophic, and undertaking the dual responsibilities of degrading hydrocarbons to inorganic carbon and uptaking inorganic carbon to biomass.

Experimental investigation of products from thermal treatment of real-world mixed single-use and multi-layered waste plastics

The usage and disposal of highly abundant single-use and multilayered plastics contribute to significant ecological problems. The thermochemical recovery of these plastics to useful products and chemicals provides opportunity for positive economic and environmental impacts. Most previous research use idealised and unrepresentative feedstocks. To address this, various mixed waste plastics collected from the rejected fraction of a municipal waste recovery facility in Ghana were pyrolyzed at varying temperatures of 450, 500 and 550 °C and their yields compared. The obtained chemical products were analysed using several different techniques. Energy and carbon balances of the processes were produced using the CHNS and energy content of the oil fraction and the compositional results of the pyrolysis gas fraction, the latter of which was measured by Gas Chromatography Thermal Conductivity Detection (GC-TCD). The oils were further assessed via Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify the available valuable compounds. The formed oil contained approximately 40% light hydrocarbons (C6 - C11), 18% middle hydrocarbons (C11 - C16) and 42% heavy hydrocarbon compounds (C16+). The optimal oil yield of 65.9 ± 0.5% and low heating value of 44.7 ± 0.1 MJ/kg for single-use plastics were recorded at highest heating temperatures of 550 and 500 °C, respectively. The findings provide indication that pyrolysis is a fitting solution for energy recovery from waste plastics.

Temperature-Dependent Density and Viscosity Prediction for Hydrocarbons: Machine Learning and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Machine learning-based predictive models allow rapid and reliable prediction of material properties and facilitate innovative materials design. Base oils used in the formulation of lubricant products are complex hydrocarbons of varying sizes and structure. This study developed Gaussian process regression-based models to accurately predict the temperature-dependent density and dynamic viscosity of 305 complex hydrocarbons. In our approach, strongly correlated/collinear predictors were trimmed, important predictors were selected by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regularization and prior domain knowledge, hyperparameters were systematically optimized by Bayesian optimization, and the models were interpreted. The approach provided versatile and quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models with relatively simple predictors for determining the dynamic viscosity and density of complex hydrocarbons at any temperature. In addition, we developed molecular dynamics simulation-based descriptors and evaluated the feasibility and versatility of dynamic descriptors from simulations for predicting the material properties. It was found that the models developed using a comparably smaller pool of dynamic descriptors performed similarly in predicting density and viscosity to models based on many more static descriptors. The best models were shown to predict density and dynamic viscosity with coefficient of determination (R2) values of 99.6% and 97.7%, respectively, for all data sets, including a test data set of 45 molecules. Finally, partial dependency plots (PDPs), individual conditional expectation (ICE) plots, local interpretable model-agnostic explanation (LIME) values, and trimmed model R2 values were used to identify the most important static and dynamic predictors of the density and viscosity.

Association between Ambient Volatile Organic Compounds Exposome and Emergency Hospital Admissions for Cardiovascular Disease

The limited research on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has not taken into account the interactions between constituents. We used the weighted quantile sum (WQS) model and generalized linear model (GLM) to quantify the joint effects of ambient VOCs exposome and identify the substances that play key roles. For a 0 day lag, a quartile increase of WQS index for n-alkanes, iso/anti-alkanes, aromatic, halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated saturated chain hydrocarbons, and halogenated unsaturated chain hydrocarbons were associated with 1.09% (95% CI: 0.13, 2.06%), 0.98% (95% CI: 0.22, 1.74%), 0.92% (95% CI: 0.14, 1.69%), 1.03% (95% CI: 0.14, 1.93%), 1.69% (95% CI: 0.48, 2.91%), and 1.85% (95% CI: 0.93, 2.79%) increase in cardiovascular disease (CVD) emergency hospital admissions, respectively. Independent effects of key substances on CVD-related emergency hospital admissions were also reported. In particular, an interquartile range increase in 1,1,1-trichloroethane, methylene chloride, styrene, and methylcyclohexane is associated with a greater risk of CVD-associated emergency hospital admissions [3.30% (95% CI: 1.93, 4.69%), 3.84% (95% CI: 1.21, 6.53%), 5.62% (95% CI: 1.35, 10.06%), 8.68% (95% CI: 3.74, 13.86%), respectively]. We found that even if ambient VOCs are present at a considerably low concentration, they can cause cardiovascular damage. This should prompt governments to establish and improve concentration standards for VOCs and their sources. At the same time, policies should be introduced to limit VOCs emission to protect public health.

Evaluation of biomass sources on the production of biofuels from lignocellulosic waste over zeolite catalysts

Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) is a promising method to convert biomass waste into sustainable bio-oils. However, the relationship gap between biomass characteristics and bio-oil quality has hindered the development of CFP technology. This study investigated the pyrolysis and CFP of ten biomass sources over zeolites, and showed that biomass sources and zeolites played important roles in bio-oil production. For noncatalytic trials, the bio-oil yield was positively related to holocellulose (R2 = 0.75) and volatiles content (R2 = 0.62) but negatively to ash content (R2 = -0.65). The bio-oil quality was dramatically improved after catalyst addition. For CFP over ZSM-5, hydrocarbons selectivity of bio-oils was increased by 1.6∼79.3 times, which was closely related to H/C ratio (R2 = 0.79). For ZSM-5@SBA-15 trials, the dependency of hydrocarbons selectivity on biomass characteristics was less clear than that in ZSM-5 counterparts, although undesirable PAHs were inhibited for most biomass sources. This study demonstrated the influence mechanism of biomass characteristics on bio-oil compositions.

Chemical structure of hydrocarbons significantly affects removal performance and microbial responses in gas biotrickling filters

The control of emissions of short-chain hydrocarbons with different structures is critical for the petrochemical industry. Herein, three two-carbon-containing (C2) hydrocarbons, ethane, ethylene, and acetylene, were chosen as pollutants to study the effects of chemical structure of hydrocarbons on removal performance and microbial responses in biotrickling filters. Results showed that the removal efficiency (RE) of C2 hydrocarbons followed the sequence of acetylene > ethane > ethylene. When the inlet loading rate was 30 g/(m3·h) and the empty bed residence time was 60 s, the RE of ethane, ethylene, and acetylene was 57 ± 4.0 %, 49 ± 1.0 %, and 84 ± 2.7 %, respectively. The high water solubility resulted in the high removal of C2 hydrocarbons, while a low surface tension enhanced the removal of C2 hydrocarbons. Additionally, the microbial community, enzyme activity, and extracellular properties of microorganisms also contributed to the difference in C2 hydrocarbon removal. These results could be referred for the effective control of light hydrocarbon emissions.

Aliphatic hydrocarbons in fin spines of adult sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) and their relationship with potentially toxic elements in the northern and southern regions of the Caspian Sea

Currently, the pollution of the Caspian Sea by the oil industry is one of the highest problems in this area. Critically endangered species inhabit this sea, such as sturgeons, whose ecological value is incalculable. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the level of contamination of aliphatic hydrocarbons of petroleum and its relation with several toxic elements directly on sturgeons spines. A total of 40 adult starry sturgeons (Acipenser stellatus) were obtained within a repopulation programme in the northern and southern coastal waters of the Caspian Sea. The marginal pectoral fin was extracted from each fish to determine aliphatic hydrocarbons, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nickel, lead, and vanadium. Subsequently, the sturgeons were released. Clearly, the presence of hydrocarbons was evidenced in all the sampled areas finding higher concentrations in the northern areas (N1 = 1.35 ± 0.4; N2 = 1.65 ± 0.46; N3 = 1.27 ± 0.40; S1 = 0.61 ± 0.22; S2 = 0.85 ± 0.43 mg/kg). Furthermore, to a greater or lesser extent, some toxic elements, mainly Hg and As, have been linked to aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Urea amendment decouples nitrification in hydrocarbon contaminated Antarctic soil

Hydrocarbon contaminated soils resulting from human activities pose a risk to the natural environment, including in the Arctic and Antarctic. Engineered biopiles constructed at Casey Station, Antarctica, have proven to be an effective strategy for remediating hydrocarbon contaminated soils, with active ex-situ remediation resulting in significant reductions in hydrocarbons, even in the extreme Antarctic climate. However, the use of urea-based fertilisers, whilst providing a nitrogen source for bioremediation, has also altered the natural soil chemistry leading to increases in pH, ammonium and nitrite. Monitoring of the urea amended biopiles identified rising levels of nitrite to be of particular interest, which misaligns with the long term goal of reducing contaminant levels and returning soil communities to a 'healthy' state. Here, we combine amplicon sequencing, microfluidic qPCR on field samples and laboratory soil microcosms to assess the impact of persistent nitrite accumulation (up to 60 months) on nitrifier abundances observed within the Antarctic biopiles. Differential inhibition of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) Nitrobacter and Nitrospira in the cold, urea treated, alkaline soils (pH 8.1) was associated with extensive nitrite accumulation (76 ± 57 mg N/kg at 60 months). When the ratio of Nitrospira:AOB dropped below ∼1:1, Nitrobacter was completely inhibited or absent from the biopiles, and nitrite accumulated. Laboratory soil microcosms (incubated at 7 °C and 15 °C for 9 weeks) reproduced the pattern of nitrite accumulation in urea fertilized soil at the lower temperature, consistent with our longer-term observations from the Antarctic biopiles, and with other temperature-controlled microcosm studies. Diammonium phosphate amended soil did not exhibit nitrite accumulation, and could be a suitable alternative biostimulant to avoid excessive nitrite build-up.

Hydrocarbon stapled temporin-L analogue as potential antibacterial and antiendotoxin agents with enhanced protease stability

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious global concern and a huge burden on the healthcare system. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered as a solution of AMR due to their membrane-lytic and intracellular mode of action and therefore resistance development against AMPs is less frequent. One such AMPs, temporin-L (TL) is a 13-mer peptide reported as a potent and broad-spectrum antibacterial agent with significant immunomodulatory activity. However, TL is toxic to human erythrocytes at their antibacterial concentrations and therefore various analogues were synthesized with potent antimicrobial activity and lower hemolytic activity. In this work, we have selected a non-toxic engineered analogue of TL (eTL) and performed hydrocarbon stapling of amino acid residues at i to i + 4 positions at different part of sequence. The synthesized peptides were investigated against both the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as methicillin resistant S. aureus, its MIC was measured in the concentrations range of 0.9-15.2 µM. All analogues were found equal or better antibacterial as compared to parent peptide. Interestingly one analogue eTL [5-9] was found to be non-cytotoxic and stable in presence of the human serum. Mode of action studies revealed membrane depolarizing and disruptive mode of action with live MRSA. Further in vivo studies of antimicrobial against MRSA infection and anti-endotoxin activities in mice model revealed potential activity of the stapled peptide analogue. Overall, this reports on stapled analogue of the AMPs highlights an important strategy for the development of new antibacterial therapeutics against AMR.

Activation of persulfate by g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC for degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon in groundwater

In this study, we synthesized a high removal efficiency catalyst using biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron and g-C3N4, denoted as g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC, to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in groundwater. We characterized the morphology and physiochemical properties of g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET surface area analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To assess the performance of the g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC catalyst, we investigated various reaction parameters, such as the mass ratio of g-C3N4 to nZVI@SBC, PS concentration, initial pH, initial TPH concentration, and the presence of coexisting ions in the system. The results from batch experiments and repeated use trials indicate that g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC exhibited both excellent catalytic activation capability and impressive durability, making it a promising choice for TPH degradation. Specifically, when the PS concentration reached 1 mM, the catalyst dosage was 0.3 g/L, and the g-C3N4 to nZVI@SBC mass ratio was 2, we achieved a remarkable TPH removal efficiency of 93.8%. Through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) testing and quenching experiments, we identified sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide radicals as the primary active substance involved in the TPH degradation process. Moreover, the g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC composite proved highly effective for in-situ TPH removal from groundwater and displayed an 86% removal rate, making it a valuable candidate for applications in permeable reactive barriers (PRB) aimed at enhancing environmental remediation. In summary, by skillfully utilizing g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC, this study has made notable advancements in synthesis and characterization, presenting a feasible and innovative approach to addressing TPH pollution in groundwater.

Physics-guided neural network for predicting asphalt mixture rutting with balanced accuracy, stability and rationality

The prediction of rutting performance of asphalt materials poses a significant challenge due to the intricate relationships between the rutting performance and its influencing factors. Machine learning models have gained popularity to address this challenge by offering sophisticated model structures and algorithms. However, existing models often prioritize model accuracy over stability and rationality. The increasingly complicated model structure may lead to an imbalance between the data and the model, resulting in issues such as overfitting and reduced model applicability and interpretability. In this context, this study proposes a novel modeling framework to predict the rutting performance of asphalt mixture by utilizing autoencoder for feature selection and feedforward neural network for rut depth prediction. Notably, physics information of the selected variables is implemented into the neural network to achieve the appropriate balance of model accuracy, stability, and rationality. The results demonstrate that while maintaining high model accuracy, the implementation of physics information significantly enhances the model's stability and rationality. This framework holds great potential for accurate and reliable predictions of pavement distress by leveraging the complementary strengths of data-driven machine learning and physics-based domain knowledge.

Utilizing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and surfactant in the management of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome due to hydrocarbon pneumonitis

Severe cases of hydrocarbon aspiration requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) are rarely reported in pediatrics, and 90% of hospitalized patients have a relatively benign clinical course. We describe a 14 month-old female with accidental hydrocarbon ingestion and aspiration due to organic makeup brush cleaner that suffered severe ARDS and multiorgan failure, successfully managed with ECMO and surfactant. She was decannulated after a total of 72 hours on ECMO, extubated on hospital day 15 (HD 15), and discharged home in her normal state of health after one month in the hospital. ECMO and adjunctive therapies such as surfactant may be helpful in the management of severe hydrocarbon pneumonitis and there are limited reports of ECMO as a supportive method for these pediatric patients.

Energy and social factor decomposition to identify drivers impeding sustainable environmental transition in emerging countries: SDGs-2030 progress assessment using LMDI analysis

The balance between human growth, economic prosperity, and the consumption of hydrocarbon energy factors has become a prerequisite for environmental sustainability. However, the complexities of these factors force researchers to work for more viable combinations of such a balance. Therefore, this study attempted to determine the factors driving environmental sustainability in leading populated economies. For this purpose, the Logarithmic Mean Division Index (LMDI) utilized to decompose critical factors such as activity, economy, real density, energy intensity, and suburban effects for the period 1999-2022. Both population and its consequences (economic activity) have been found to be the leading factors behind environmental fluctuations, and energy has a negative impact on hydrocarbon forms, while contributing positively to environmental sustainability with high efficiency and low intensity. Therefore, sustainable demographic and energy transitions can be leading pathways for environmental sustainability in developing economies.

[What is the Initiating Reaction for the Lipid Radical Chain Reaction System That Can Induce Ferroptotic Cell Death at the Lower Oxygen Content?]

The neural cell death in cerebral infarction is suggested to be ferroptosis-like cell death, involving the participation of 15-lipoxygenase (15-LOx). Ferroptosis is induced by lipid radical species generated through the one-electron reduction of lipid hydroperoxides, and it has been shown to propagate intracellularly and intercellularly. At lower oxygen concentration, it appeared that both regiospecificity and stereospecificity of conjugated diene moiety in lipoxygenase-catalysed lipid hydroperoxidation are drastically lost. As a result, in the reaction with linoleic acid, the linoleate 9-peroxyl radical-ferrous lipoxygenase complex dissolves into the linoleate 9-peroxyl radical and ferrous 15-lipoxygenase. Subsequently, the ferrous 15-lipoxygenase then undergoes one-electron reduction of 13-hydroperoxy octadecadienoic acid, generating an alkoxyl radical (pseudoperoxidase reaction). A part of the produced lipid alkoxyl radicals undergoes cleavage of C-C bonds, liberating small molecular hydrocarbon radicals. Particularly, in ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are abundant in the vascular and nervous systems, the liberation of small molecular hydrocarbon radicals was more pronounced compared to ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The involvement of these small molecular hydrocarbon radicals in the propagation of membrane lipid damage is suggested.

Biochar-based materials as remediation strategy in petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and water: Performances, mechanisms, and environmental impact

Petroleum contamination is considered as a major risk to the health of humans and environment. Biochars as low-cost and eco-friendly carbon materials, have been widely used for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbon in the environment. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance, mechanisms, and potential environmental toxicity of biochar, modified biochar and its integration use with other materials in petroleum contaminated soil and water. Specifically, the use of biochar in oil-contaminated water and soil as well as the factors that could influence the removal ability of biochar were systematically evaluated. In addition, the modification and integrated use of biochar for improving the removal efficiency were summarized from the aspects of sorption, biodegradation, chemical degradation, and reusability. Moreover, the functional impacts and associated ecotoxicity of pristine and modified biochars in various environments were demonstrated. Finally, some shortcoming of current approaches, and future research needs were provided for the future direction and challenges of modified biochar research. Overall, this paper gain insight into biochar application in petroleum remediation from the perspectives of performance enhancement and environmental sustainability.

Rheological properties of warm mixed high viscosity asphalt at high and low temperatures

The rheological properties of asphalt can well reflect its road performance, but the rheological properties of warm mix high viscosity asphalt (HVA) are unclear. In order to study the effect of warm mixing agent on rheological properties of HVA, two kinds of warm mixing agent EC120 (EC) and Evotherm M1 (M1) were selected to prepare warm mix HVA. The rheological properties of warm mix HVA at high temperature (135~195°C), medium temperature (0~80°C) and low temperature (-6~18°C) were studied by Brinell rotary viscosity test, dynamic shear rheological test (including temperature scanning, frequency scanning, linear amplitude scanning) and bending beam rheological test. The test results show that both EC and M1 have good viscosity reduction effect on HVA at high temperature, and can effectively reduce the construction temperature. At medium temperature, M1 can effectively improve the fatigue resistance of HVA, and the fatigue life can be increased by about 30% when the dosage is 0.6%. EC can increase the rutting factor of HVA and improve its resistance to deformation, but it will reduce its fatigue performance. When the dosage is 4%, the fatigue life will be reduced by about 9%. At low temperature, M1 can reduce the creep stiffness S, increase the creep rate m, and improve the low temperature performance of HVA, while EC has the opposite effect, weakening the low temperature performance of HVA. The results are helpful to understand the rheological properties of warm mix HVA and promote its application.

Study on crack resistance of self-healing microcapsules in asphalt pavement by multi-scale method

Self-healing microcapsules in the asphalt pavement must be kept intact under vehicle load to ensure there is enough rejuvenator in capsules when cracks appear in asphalt pavement. In this paper, the crack resistance of self-healing microcapsules in asphalt pavement was evaluated. Firstly, an expanding multi-scale analysis was conducted based on proposed mesoscopic mechanical models with the aim to determine the mechanical parameters for the following contracting multi-scale analysis. Secondly, the periodic boundary condition was introduced for the contracting multi-scale analysis and the stress field of the capsule wall was obtained. Finally, the effects of the design parameters of the microcapsule on its crack resistance in asphalt pavement were investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of microcapsules has almost no effect on the elastic constants of the asphalt mixture. The core could be simplified as an approximately incompressible solid with the elastic constants determined by the proposed mesoscopic mechanical model. With the increase of the modulus of the capsule wall, the mean maximum tensile stress of the capsule wall increased from 0.372 MPa to 0.465 MPa, while with the decrease of the relative radius of the capsule core, the mean maximum tensile stress of the capsule wall increased from 0.349 MPa to 0.461 MPa. The change in the mean maximum tensile stress of the capsule wall caused by the change of capsule diameter was within 5%. The relative radius of the capsule core and the elastic modulus of capsule wall were two key parameters in capsule design. Besides, the microcapsules with the wall made of resin would not crack under the vehicle load before microcracks occurred in asphalt pavement.

Association Between Long‑Term Exposure to Air Pollution and the Rate of Mortality After Hip Fracture Surgery in Patients Older Than 60 Years: Nationwide Cohort Study in Taiwan

BACKGROUND

To enhance postoperative patient survival, particularly in older adults, understanding the predictors of mortality following hip fracture becomes paramount. Air pollution, a prominent global environmental issue, has been linked to heightened morbidity and mortality across a spectrum of diseases. Nevertheless, the precise impact of air pollution on hip fracture outcomes remains elusive.

OBJECTIVE

This retrospective study aims to comprehensively investigate the profound influence of a decade-long exposure to 12 diverse air pollutants on the risk of post-hip fracture mortality among older Taiwanese patients (older than 60 years). We hypothesized that enduring long-term exposure to air pollution would significantly elevate the 1-year mortality rate following hip fracture surgery.

METHODS

From Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we obtained the data of patients who underwent hip fracture surgery between July 1, 2003, and December 31, 2013. Using patients' insurance registration data, we estimated their cumulative exposure levels to sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), particulate matter having a size of <10 μm (PM10), particulate matter having a size of <2.5 μm (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides (NOX), nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), total hydrocarbons (THC), nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC), and methane (CH4). We quantified the dose-response relationship between these air pollutants and the risk of mortality by calculating hazard ratios associated with a 1 SD increase in exposure levels over a decade.

RESULTS

Long-term exposure to SO2, CO, PM10, PM2.5, NOX, NO, NO2, THC, NMHC, and CH4 demonstrated significant associations with heightened all-cause mortality risk within 1 year post hip fracture surgery among older adults. For older adults, each 1 SD increment in the average exposure levels of SO2, CO, PM10, PM2.5, NOX, NO, NO2, THC, NMHC, and CH4 corresponded to a substantial escalation in mortality risk, with increments of 14%, 49%, 18%, 12%, 41%, 33%, 38%, 20%, 9%, and 26%, respectively. We further noted a 35% reduction in the hazard ratio for O3 exposure suggesting a potential protective effect, along with a trend of potentially protective effects of CO2.

CONCLUSIONS

This comprehensive nationwide retrospective study, grounded in a population-based approach, demonstrated that long-term exposure to specific air pollutants significantly increased the risk of all-cause mortality within 1 year after hip fracture surgery in older Taiwanese adults. A reduction in the levels of SO2, CO, PM10, PM2.5, NOX, NO, NO2, THC, NMHC, and CH4 may reduce the risk of mortality after hip fracture surgery. This study provides robust evidence and highlights the substantial impact of air pollution on the outcomes of hip fractures.

Production of light olefins and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the pyrolysis of waste plastic straws over high-silica zeolite-based catalysts

Owing to the ever-increasing generation of plastic waste, the need to develop environmentally friendly disposal methods has increased. This study explored the potential of waste plastic straw to generate valuable light olefins and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) via catalytic pyrolysis using high-silica zeolite-based catalysts. HZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3:200) exhibited superior performance, yielding more light olefins (49.8 wt%) and a higher MAH content than Hbeta (300). This was attributed to the increased acidity and proper shape selectivity. HZSM-5 displayed better coking resistance (0.7 wt%) than Hbeta (4.4 wt%) by impeding secondary reactions, limiting coke precursor formation. The use of HZSM-5 (80) resulted in higher MAHs and lower light olefins than HZSM-5 (200) because of its higher acidity. Incorporation of Co into HZSM-5 (200) marginally lowered light olefin yield (to 44.0 wt%) while notably enhancing MAH production and boosting propene selectivity within the olefin composition. These observations are attributed to the well-balanced coexistence of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, which stimulated the carbonium ion mechanism and induced H-transfer, cyclization, Diels-alder, and dehydrogenation reactions. The catalytic pyrolysis of plastic straw over high-silica and metal-loaded HZSM-5 catalysts has been suggested as an efficient and sustainable method for transforming plastic waste materials into valuable light olefins and MAHs.

Spatio-temporal variations in dissolved trace elements in peat bog porewaters impacted by dust inputs from open-pit mining activities in the Athabasca Bituminous Sands (ABS) region

Considerable volumes of dust are generated from open-pit bitumen mining operations in northern Alberta, Canada. The reactive mineral phases of these dust particles can potentially dissolve in acidic (pH < 4) bog waters. Their dissolution could release trace elements (TEs), which could eventually alter these bog ecosystems. The impact of dust dissolution on the abundance of TEs in the dissolved (<0.45 μm) fraction of porewaters from excavated pits (30-40 cm deep) in the ombrogenic zone of five peatlands was evaluated. Porewaters were collected from four bogs situated within 70 km of mines and upgraders in the Athabasca Bituminous Sands (ABS) region, Alberta, Canada, and from a reference bog situated 264 km away. Over two consecutive years, the dissolved concentrations of some conservative (Al, Th, Y) and mobile lithophile elements (Fe, Li, Mn, Sr), as well as the metals enriched in bitumen (V, Ni, Mo), all increased with proximity to the mining area, in the ABS region. These trends reflect the observed increase in dust deposition with proximity to the mining area from independent studies of snow, lichens, and Sphagnum moss. Contrarily, the impact of dust dissolution on the concentration of potentially toxic TEs (As, Cd, Pb, Sb, and Tl) was negligible. Thus, the elements which are more abundant in the porewaters near industry are either ecologically benign (e.g. Li and Sr) or essential micronutrients (e.g. Fe, Mn, Ni, and Mo). Manganese was the only element which was enriched by more than 10x at all sites near the mining area, compared to its concentration at the reference site. The enrichments of all other elements were <10x, indicating that anthropogenic dust emissions from mining areas have had only a modest effect on the TEs abundance in peat porewaters.

Plant biomass extracted eco-friendly natural surfactant enhanced bio-electrokinetic remediation of crude oil contaminated soil

The current work investigates bioremediation (BIO) and electrokinetic (EK) remediation of crude oil hydrocarbons utilizing the biomass-electrokinetic (BIO-EK) approaches. The use of natural surfactants derived from plant biomass may improve remediation capacity by enhancing the solubility of organic pollutants. Sapindus mukorossi, a natural surfactant producer, was extracted from plant biomass in this study. The crude oil biodegradation efficiency was reported to be 98 %. In nature, FTIR confirms that plant biomass is lipopeptide. GCMS revealed that the crude oil (C7 - C23) was efficiently bio-degraded from lower to higher molecular weight. The application of natural surfactants in electokinetic remediation increased the plant biomass degradation of crude oil polluted soil by 98% compared to electrokinetic 55% in 2 days. Natural surfactant improves hydrocarbon solubilization and accelerates hydrocarbon electro migration to the anodic compartment, as confirmed by the presence of greater total organic content than the electrokinetic. This study proves that BIO-EK compared with a natural surfactant derived from plant biomass may be utilized to improve in situ bioremediation of crude oil polluted soils.

Rhinoceros beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus) cuticular hydrocarbons contain information about body size and sex

Japanese rhinoceros beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus) males have exaggerated horns that are used to compete for territories. Larger males with larger horns tend to win these competitions, giving them access to females. Agonistic interactions include what appears to be assessment and often end without escalating to physical combat. However, it is unknown what information competitors use to assess each other. In many insect species chemical signals can carry a range of information, including social position, nutritional state, morphology, and sex. Specifically, cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), which are waxes excreted on the surface of insect exoskeletons, can communicate a variety of information. Here, we asked whether CHCs in rhinoceros beetles carry information about sex, body size, and condition that could be used by males during assessment behavior. Multivariate analysis of hydrocarbon composition revealed patterns associated with both sex and body size. We suggest that Rhinoceros beetles could be communicating information through CHCs that would explain behavioral decisions.

Research on surface treatment technology for quickly improving the skid resistance of tunnel concrete pavement

In order to solve the problem that the skid resistance of concrete pavement in tunnel deteriorates rapidly, which is easy to cause traffic accidents, the anti-skid rapid elevation technology of surface treatment is proposed. Wear tests were used to investigate the effects of concrete surface roughness, properties of modified emulsified asphalt binder and anti-skid fine aggregate type on long-term skid resistance of treated surfaces. The results show that the four coarsening methods of fine milling, milling, grooving and brooming can improve the skid resistance of concrete, and the skid resistance durability of fine milling and milling is better. The adhesive property of modified emulsified asphalt is the best when the content of water-based epoxy resin is 20%. In different aggregates, the anti-skid effect is better when silicon carbide is used as anti-skid aggregate and the particle size is 0.6mm:0.3mm = 2:3. The method of fine milling of concrete surface + spraying epoxy emulsified asphalt + spreading silicon carbide can effectively improve the anti-skid performance of the original concrete pavement, and the feasibility of the scheme is verified by the test road. The research results have a good reference value for improving the skid resistance of tunnel concrete pavement.

Relationship between PAH4 formation and thermal reaction products in model lipids and possible pathways of PAHs formation

Lipids are closely related to the generation of PAHs during food thermal processing. During heating, lipids mainly triglycerides undergo hydrolysis, oxidation and decomposition. The relationship between the various products and the formation of PAHs is still unclear. This paper investigated the effect of different lipid standards on PAH4 production, and explored their thermal stability and reaction products to delve into nature of the differences in PAH4 production. Fatty acids were more prone to generate PAH4 than glycerides. The higher the degree of esterification of glycerides, the higher its thermal stability and the lower the content of PAH4 generated, implying that hydrolysis of glycerides promoted the generation of PAH4. In addition, there was a positive correlation between unsaturation in lipids and the PAH4 production. After heat treatment, hydroperoxides, unsaturated fatty alcohols and aldehydes, alkenes and aromatic substances were abundant in oleic acid and linoleic acid which produced the most PAH4. Thermal decomposition of lipid hydroperoxides was the pathway for the generation of conjugated hydrocarbon radicals, alcohols, aldehydes, and alkenes. The intramolecular cyclization and Diels-Alder reaction acted as ring-forming reactions, with consequent dehydrogenation, decarboxylation, side-chain breaks and radical reorganization, ultimately facilitating the amplification of the aromatic rings and the formation of PAHs.

Microbial functional heterogeneity induced in a petroleum-polluted soil profile

Microbial taxonomic diversity declines with increasing stress caused by petroleum pollution. However, few studies have tested whether functional diversities vary similarly to taxonomic diversity along the stress gradient. Here, we investigated soil microbial communities in a petrochemically polluted site in China. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations were higher in the middle (2-3 m) and deep soil layer (3-5 m) than in the surface soil layer (0-2 m). Accordingly, microbial taxonomic α-diversity was decreased by 44% (p < 0.001) in the middle and deep soil layers, compared to the surface soil layer. In contrast, functional α-diversity decreased by 3% (p < 0.001), showing a much better buffering capacity to environmental stress. Differences in microbial taxonomic and functional β-diversities were enlarged in the middle and deep soil layers, extending the Anna Karenina Principle (AKP) that a community adapts to stressful environments in its own way. Consistent with the stress gradient hypothesis, we revealed a higher degree of network connectivity among microbial species and genes in the middle and deep soil layers compared to the surface soil layer. Together, we demonstrate that microbial functionality is more tolerant to stress than taxonomy, both of which were amenable to AKP and the stress gradient hypothesis.

Utilization of wollastonite, jarosite, and their blends for the sustainable development of concrete paver block mixes containing reclaimed asphalt pavement aggregates

While several research studies considered the utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates for asphalt and concrete pavements, very few attempted its possible utilization for precast concrete applications like concrete paver blocks (CPBs). Moreover, few attempts made in the recent past to improve the strength properties of RAP inclusive concrete mixes by incorporating certain supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) have reported an insignificant or marginal effect. The present study attempts to comprehensively investigate the utilization potential of some locally and abundantly available materials having suitable physicochemical properties to improve the performance of a zero-slump CPB mix containing 50% RAP aggregates. The studied filler materials, namely, wollastonite (naturally occurring calcium metasilicate mineral) and jarosite (hazardous zinc industry waste), were used to replace 5-15% and 10-20% by volume of Portland cement in the 50% RAP CPB mix. Apart from their individual effects, the efficacy of wollastonite-jarosite blends was also investigated. Considering the lack of indoor storage facilities and economic aspects of CPBs, the influence of water spray curing regime on the performance of the RAP CPB mixes was studied and compared to that of continuous water curing regime. Inclusion of the considered fillers was found to statistically and significantly enhance the flexural strength, tensile splitting strength, and abrasion resistance of the 50% RAP CPB mix; however, the compressive strength (in most cases), permeable voids, water absorption, and water permeability properties showed an insignificant improvement. Results of thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the occurrence of pozzolanic reactivity, and microstructure analysis revealed improvements in packing of concrete matrix and ITZ with filler inclusion qualitatively substantiating the improvements in strength and durability characteristics. The toxicity characteristics of heavy metals that may leach from the hazardous jarosite-based RAP CPB mixes were found to be within permissible limits. Based on the performance requirements specified by IS, IRC, and ASTM standards, all the RAP CPB mixes with filler inclusions fulfilled the acceptance criteria for heavy traffic applications, and water spray curing can enact as an alternate method for curing these mixes. However, to avail maximum performance benefits, it is recommended to use 5% wollastonite, 15% jarosite, and a combination of 10% wollastonite and 10% jarosite as a Portland cement substitute to produce sustainable eco-friendly RAP CPB mixes.

Evaluation of a hydrodynamic cavitation-type bubble generator in a prototype bench-scale flotation unit for poultry processing wastewater treatment

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems are designed to remove oil and grease (O&G) and total suspended solids (TSS) in wastewater treatment. These systems require saturation tanks, water pumps, and high-pressure compressors to control the pressure, hydraulic retention time, and airflow parameters. DAF process efficiency depends on complex operational controls associated with these components, and the most critical aspect of an effectively operating DAF unit is a generated bubble size. This work presents the design and operational test of a flotation unit prototype that replaces the saturation tank and high-pressure compressors present in DAF with the CARMIN microbubble injector, the evaluation of the proposed system's TSS and O&G removal efficiency was carried out considering different initial configurations of the injector to change the generated microbubble size, four synthetic wastewater solutions, and poly aluminum chloride as a flocculant to establish the potential of this system for the poultry processing wastewater treatment. Mean microbubble size results were obtained from 47.41 µm to 116.17 µm. The average removal efficiency of TSS exceeded 65% under a high concentration of suspended particles (1,560 mg/l) and 80% under a lower TSS concentration (795 mg/l). Meanwhile, 70% and 90% of O&G were removed from high (400 mg/l) and low (100 mg/l) initial O&G concentrations, respectively. These removal levels are similar to those reported in the literature for DAF for poultry processing wastewater, albeit with a simple configuration and better controllability and scalability.

Bioprospecting the potential of the microbial community associated to Antarctic marine sediments for hydrocarbon bioremediation

Microorganisms that inhabit the cold Antarctic environment can produce ligninolytic enzymes potentially useful in bioremediation. Our study focused on characterizing Antarctic bacteria and fungi from marine sediment samples of King George and Deception Islands, maritime Antarctica, potentially affected by hydrocarbon influence, able to produce enzymes for use in bioremediation processes in environments impacted with petroleum derivatives. A total of 168 microorganism isolates were obtained: 56 from sediments of King George Island and 112 from Deception Island. Among them, five bacterial isolates were tolerant to cell growth in the presence of diesel oil and gasoline and seven fungal were able to discolor RBBR dye. In addition, 16 isolates (15 bacterial and one fungal) displayed enzymatic emulsifying activities. Two isolates were characterized taxonomically by showing better biotechnological results. Psychrobacter sp. BAD17 and Cladosporium sp. FAR18 showed pyrene tolerance (cell growth of 0.03 g mL-1 and 0.2 g mL-1) and laccase enzymatic activity (0.006 UL-1 and 0.10 UL-1), respectively. Our results indicate that bacteria and fungi living in sediments under potential effect of hydrocarbon pollution may represent a promising alternative to bioremediate cold environments contaminated with polluting compounds derived from petroleum such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dyes.

Method of smoldering combustion for the treatment of oil sludge-contaminated soil

There is an urgent need to globally remediate oil sludge-contaminated soil (OSS). Smoldering combustion is a new low-energy approach for the treatment of organic waste. Therefore, the feasibility of smoldering combustion for the treatment of OSS was investigated in this study using a series of laboratory-scale experiments. The effective remediation of OSS was found to be achievable when the mass ratio of oil sludge in the sample reached 1/12 and above. Experimental results showed that smoldering at peak temperatures above 500 °C was found to completely remove petroleum hydrocarbons from the samples. The mass ratio of oil sludge in the sample had little effect on the distribution of the major elements (Si, Al, and Ca) in the smoldering products, and most of the minerals in the oil sludge adhered to the surface of the soil particles after smoldering. The smoldering heating environment is detrimental to the reusability of the soil, increases soil pH and available phosphorus content, and decreases organic carbon and total nitrogen content. Moreover, the influence of the airflow rate and material height on smoldering characteristics was investigated. Matching the appropriate airflow rate can help maintain optimal smoldering conditions, and smoldering remains stable with increasing material height. The addition of recovered oil to a sample with a low mass ratio of oil sludge can help with smoldering ignition and improve the removal efficiency of petroleum hydrocarbons. This study has confirmed that smoldering can be used to treat OSS within a broad range of oil sludge concentrations without pretreatment.

Molecular and metabolic characterization of petroleum hydrocarbons degrading Bacillus cereus

Hydrocarbon constituents of petroleum are persistent, bioaccumulated, and bio-magnified in living tissues, transported to longer distances, and exert hazardous effects on human health and the ecosystem. Bioaugmentation with microorganisms like bacteria is an emerging approach that can mitigate the toxins from environmental sources. The present study was initiated to target the petroleum-contaminated soil of gasoline stations situated in Lahore. Petroleum degrading bacteria were isolated by serial dilution method followed by growth analysis, biochemical and molecular characterization, removal efficiency estimation, metabolites extraction, and GC-MS of the metabolites. Molecular analysis identified the bacterium as Bacillus cereus, which exhibited maximum growth at 72 hours and removed 75% petroleum. Biochemical characterization via the Remel RapID™ ONE panel system showed positive results for arginine dehydrolase (ADH), ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), lysine decarboxylase (LDC), o-nitrophenyl-β-D-galactosidase (ONPG), p-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucosidase (βGLU), p-nitrophenyl-N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), malonate (MAL), adonitol fermentation (ADON), and tryptophane utilization (IND). GC-MS-based metabolic profiling identified alcohols (methyl alcohol, o-, p- and m-cresols, catechol, and 3-methyl catechol), aldehydes (methanone, acetaldehyde, and m-tolualdehyde), carboxylic acid (methanoic acid, cis,cis-muconic acid, cyclohexane carboxylic acid and benzoic acid), conjugate bases of carboxylic acids (benzoate, cis,cis-muconate, 4-hydroxybenzoate, and pyruvate) and cycloalkane (cyclohexene). It suggested the presence of methane, methylcyclohexane, toluene, xylene, and benzene degradation pathways in B. cereus.

Characteristics of particulate matter from asphalt pavement and tire of a moving bus through driving tests in city road and proving ground

Non-exhaust PM emissions from vehicles in real road have been conducted, but heavy vehicles have rarely been tested. In this study, PM2.5 and PM10 samples were directly collected from a tire of a moving bus and the composition was analyzed to investigate the sources of PM emissions. Driving tests were conducted at a proving ground (PG) and a city road (CR). PM2.5 emissions considerably increased when the lateral force of the tire increased and the vehicle accelerated. The PM emission rate was higher in the PG test than in the CR test because of the harsher driving conditions at PG. The emission rates of PM10 in the PG and CR tests were higher than those of PM2.5 by approximately 6 and 11 times, respectively. In the PG and CR tests, the proportions of tire wear particles (TWPs) were 4.9% and 2.1% in the PM2.5 samples, and 6.8% and 8.2% in the PM10 samples, respectively. Furthermore, TWPs with PM (TWPPM) were generated by other sources: secondary production of TWPPM by fragmentation of TWPs and resuspension of TWPPM on the road. The contributions of other sources to TWP2.5 generation were at least 6% and 57% in the PG and CR tests, respectively, whereas that to TWP10 generation was at least 3.5% in the CR test. Iron derived from brake abrasion and mineral particles was observed in the PM samples, and the Fe concentrations were higher in the PM10 samples than in the PM2.5 samples by over 9 and 18 times for the PG and CR tests, respectively. Sulfur sources, such as TWPs, exhaust gas, and bitumen, were observed in the PM samples. Based on our findings, we recommend that road wear particles should be removed from roads to reduce PM emissions upon driving.

Production efficiency and safety assessment of the solid waste-derived liquid hydrocarbons

Global fossil resource utilisation remains a concern. Organic fuels and chemicals produced through catalytic synthesis out of biomass/waste feedstock can help reduce the share of fossil resource utilisation. In this study, a solid waste-derived producer gas from the cross/updraft sliding bed gasification process was applied in a fixed bed catalytic reactor with the goal of producing rich hydrocarbon chains. The specific producer gas with CO = 10%vol., H2 = 9%vol. and CH4 = 4%vol. was applied into the catalytic reactor along with catalysts Cat-Co or Cat-CoMnK at 15 bar pressure. Both catalysts were investigated in temperature regimes of 250, 280 and 310 °C, and the liquefaction number and hydrocarbon production were determined. The liquid products were qualitatively analysed afterwards, and the safety assessment, comprising the autoignition test, was performed. The obtained results defined an optimal operating temperature close to 280 °C a value for both catalysts. The individual hydrocarbon compounds were defined mostly by alkanes and alkenes of C10-C14 hydrocarbon groups in the case of both applied catalysts. The application of MnK-promoted catalyst resulted in the production of a significant amount of C6 hydrocarbon groups as well. The results point out a wide range of compounds utilisable in many different applications throughout the production sphere and suggest the possibility of autothermal air gasification of solid recovered fuel with the goal of producing gas for catalytic synthesis with reduced operation costs. From the safety point of view, the temperature of 227.7 °C was defined as the lowest value when autoignition occurs. This lowest temperature is relevant to the Cat-Co 280 °C synthesis scenario.

Investigation of occupational risk factors for the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in adults: A hospital-based case-control study

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) is a malignancy of the lymphoid lineage of the hematopoietic system has worldwide, especially in developed countries. Better diagnostic and recording techniques, longer life expectancy, and greater exposure to risk factors are hypotheses for this growing incidence curve. Occupational exposures to chemical, biological, and physical agents have also been associated with NHL development, but the results are still controversial. We have investigated the occupational and lifestyle case-control study design with 214 adult patients and 452 population controls. Socio-demographic, clinical, and occupational exposure data were obtained through individual interviews with a standardized questionnaire. Clinical, laboratory, and histopathological data were obtained through medical records. Risk of NHL (any subtype), B-cell lymphoma, DLBCL, Follicular lymphoma and T-cell lymphoma was elevated among the those who had ever been exposed to any solvents, hydrocarbon solvents, pesticides, meat and meat products, and sunlight and tended to increase by years of exposure. A significant upward trend with years of exposure was detected for any solvents and hydrocarbon solvents (NHL (any subtype) p-value for trend<0.001), B-cell lymphoma (p-value for trend<0.001), and T-cell lymphoma (p-value for trend<0.023), pesticides (NHL (any subtype), p for trend<0.001) and T-cell lymphoma (p for trend<0.002), meat and meat products (NHL (any subtype) (p for trend<0.001) and DLBCL (p for trend<0.001), and sunlight (B-cell lymphoma (p for trend<0.001). The results of this study agree line with other international studies, can be extrapolated to other countries that have the same socio-demographic and occupational characteristics as Brazil and support strategies for surveillance and control of work-related cancer.

Illegal dumping of oil and gas wastewater alters arid soil microbial communities

The Permian Basin, underlying southeast New Mexico and west Texas, is one of the most productive oil and gas (OG) provinces in the United States. Oil and gas production yields large volumes of wastewater with complex chemistries, and the environmental health risks posed by these OG wastewaters on sensitive desert ecosystems are poorly understood. Starting in November 2017, 39 illegal dumps, as defined by federal and state regulations, of OG wastewater were identified in southeastern New Mexico, releasing ~600,000 L of fluid onto dryland soils. To evaluate the impacts of these releases, we analyzed changes in soil geochemistry and microbial community composition by comparing soils from within OG wastewater dump-affected samples to unaffected zones. We observed significant changes in soil geochemistry for all dump-affected compared with control samples, reflecting the residual salts and hydrocarbons from the OG-wastewater release (e.g., enriched in sodium, chloride, and bromide). Microbial community structure significantly (P < 0.01) differed between dump and control zones, with soils from dump areas having significantly (P < 0.01) lower alpha diversity and differences in phylogenetic composition. Dump-affected soil samples showed an increase in halophilic and halotolerant taxa, including members of the Marinobacteraceae, Halomonadaceae, and Halobacteroidaceae, suggesting that the high salinity of the dumped OG wastewater was exerting a strong selective pressure on microbial community structure. Taxa with high similarity to known hydrocarbon-degrading organisms were also detected in the dump-affected soil samples. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential for OG wastewater exposure to change the geochemistry and microbial community dynamics of arid soils.IMPORTANCEThe long-term environmental health impacts resulting from releases of oil and gas (OG) wastewater, typically brines with varying compositions of ions, hydrocarbons, and other constituents, are understudied. This is especially true for sensitive desert ecosystems, where soil microbes are key primary producers and drivers of nutrient cycling. We found that releases of OG wastewater can lead to shifts in microbial community composition and function toward salt- and hydrocarbon-tolerant taxa that are not typically found in desert soils, thus altering the impacted dryland soil ecosystem. Loss of key microbial taxa, such as those that catalyze organic carbon cycling, increase arid soil fertility, promote plant health, and affect soil moisture retention, could result in cascading effects across the sensitive desert ecosystem. By characterizing environmental changes due to releases of OG wastewater to soils overlying the Permian Basin, we gain further insights into how OG wastewater may alter dryland soil microbial functions and ecosystems.

Interspecific recognition based on cuticular hydrocarbons mediates reproduction control in aphids

The preset study tested whether an aphid species can control its reproduction by recognizing the presence and density of a rival species. Acyrthosiphon pisum and Megoura crassicauda often coexist on the same leguminous plant. We established clonal colonies from each species and mixed colonies with one A. pisum and one M. crassicauda adult. There were no significant differences in the population growth patterns of the two species at 20 °C. However, mixed colonies increased faster and attained larger colony sizes than the clonal colonies. Thus, positive interspecific interactions were confirmed. A mixed colony was dominated by the members of a clone that produced a greater number of newborns in the initial stage, irrespective of the species. Thus, we confirmed the priority effect in the interspecific competition. To simulate the priority effect, 15 glass beads coated with the hexane extract of M. crassicauda aphids were attached to a cut leaf, to which one A. pisum adult was transferred. The presence of the hexane extract of M. crassicauda greatly reduced the reproductive rate of A. pisum adults. We conclude that aphids can control their reproduction by evaluating the relative density of rivals to fellow aphids based on the cuticular hydrocarbons.

Catalytic pyrolysis of harmful plastic waste to alleviate environmental impacts

Wax is a detrimental byproduct of plastic waste pyrolysis causing challenges upon its release into the environment owing to persistence and potential toxicity. In this study, the valorization of wax materials through conversion into BTEX (i.e., benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) was achieved via catalytic pyrolysis using zeolite-based catalysts. The potential of two types of waxes, spent wax (SW), derived from the pyrolysis of plastic waste, and commercial paraffin wax (PW), for BTEX generation, was investigated. Using HZSM-5, higher yields of oil (54.9 wt%) and BTEX (18.2 wt%) were produced from the pyrolysis of SW compared to PW (32.3 and 14.1 wt%, respectively). This is due to the improved accessibility of lighter hydrocarbons in SW to Brønsted and Lewis acid sites in HZSM-5 micropores, promoting cracking, isomerization, cyclization, Diels-Alder, and dehydrogenation reactions. Further, the use of HZSM-5 resulted in significantly larger yields of oil and BTEX from SW pyrolysis compared to Hbeta and HY. This phenomenon is ascribed to the well-balanced distribution of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites and the identical geometric structure of HZSM-5 micropores and BTEX molecules. The addition of Ga to HZSM-5 further led to 2.24% and 28.30% enhancements in oil and BTEX yields, respectively, by adjusting the acidity of the catalyst through the introduction of new Lewis acid sites. The regeneration of the Ga/HZSM-5 catalyst by removing deposited coke on the spent catalyst under air partially recovered catalytic activity. This study not only offers an efficient transformation of undesirable wax into valuable fuels but also provides an environmentally promising solution, mitigating pollution, contributing to carbon capture, and promoting a healthier and more sustainable environment. It also suggests future research directions, including catalyst optimization and deactivation management, feedstock variability exploration, and techno-economic analyses for sustainable wax conversion into BTEX via catalytic pyrolysis.

Development of nanoparticles based on amphiphilic cyclodextrins for the delivery of active substances

Although amphiphilic cyclodextrin derivatives (ACDs) serve as valuable building blocks for nanomedicine formulations, their widespread production still encounters various challenges, limiting large-scale manufacturing. This work focuses on a robust alternative pathway using mineral base catalysis to transesterify β-cyclodextrin with long-chain vinyl esters, yielding ACD with modular and controlled hydrocarbon chain grafting. ACDs with a wide range of degrees of substitution (DS) were reliably synthesized, as indicated by extensive physicochemical characterization, including MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The influence of various factors, including the type of catalyst and the length of the hydrocarbon moiety of the vinyl ester, was studied in detail. ACDs were assessed for their ability to form colloidal suspensions by nanoprecipitation, with or without PEGylated phospholipid. Small-angle X-ray scattering and cryo-electron microscopy revealed the formation of nanoparticles with distinct ultrastructures depending on the DS: an onion-like structure for low and very high DS, and reversed hexagonal organization for DS between 4.5 and 6.1. We confirmed the furtivity of the PEGylated versions of the nanoparticles through complement activation experiments and that they were well tolerated in-vivo on a zebrafish larvae model after intravenous injection. Furthermore, a biodistribution experiment showed that the nanoparticles left the bloodstream within 10 h after injection and were phagocytosed by macrophages.

Integrating PET chemical recycling with pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste via pressureless alkaline depolymerization in a hydrocarbon solvent

This study presents a proof of concept for a technology train that integrates polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recovery from mixed plastic waste and plastic pyrolysis. PET is depolymerized into terephthalic acid (TPA) by hydrolysis using a low volatility oil as medium, which enables (i) low-pressure operation, and (ii) a selective separation and recovery of TPA from the product mix by a simple process of filtration, washing, and precipitation. Full PET conversion and high TPA recovery (>98 %) were achieved at 260 °C. This technology train is demonstrated to be effective for processing mixed waste streams, leading to higher yield and quality of liquid product from thermal pyrolysis when compared with feedstock that has not been pre-treated. Further, the technology could be readily integrated with a plastics pyrolysis process, whereby a by-product from the pyrolysis could be used as the low-volatility oil.

Mechanistic characterisation of a sesquiterpene synthase for asterisca-1,6-diene from the liverwort Radula lindenbergiana and implications for pentalenene biosynthesis

A sesquiterpene synthase from the liverwort Radula lindenbergiana was characterised and shown to produce the new sesquiterpene hydrocarbon (3R,9R)-asterisca-1,6-diene, besides small amounts of pentalenene. The biosynthesis of asterisca-1,6-diene was studied through isotopic labelling experiments, giving additional insights into the long discussed biosynthesis of pentalenene.

Comparison of the Interaction and Structure of Lignin in Pure Systems and in Asphalt Media by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Lignin is a class of organic aromatic polymers contributing to the rigidity and strength of plants and has been proposed as a modifier to improve asphalt performance on road pavement. However, contradicting experimental results on the lignin miscibility in asphalt were found from different studies, and lignin has been found to self-assemble in different solutions. Thus, investigating the interaction and microstructure of lignin in asphalt media in molecular detail is necessary. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using both the LAMMPS program with the OPLS-aa force field and the NAMD program with the CHARMM force field have been conducted on pure lignin (including lignin monomer, dimer, and polymer with 17 and 31 units) and their mixtures with model asphalt molecules at different temperatures. Consistent results were observed from both programs and force fields in terms of density, hydrogen bonds, diffusion coefficient, radius of gyration, and radial distribution function. Glass transition was observed in the pure lignin systems based on density and diffusion coefficient calculations at different temperatures. Lignin can form intramolecular hydrogen bonds and intermolecular hydrogen bonds with other lignin and 1,7-dimethylnapthalene in the asphalt mixture, which has dependence on temperature and lignin chain length. Correlating the lignin size and chain length using the power-law relationship showed that lignin polymers in pure systems are in quasi-relaxed structures at different temperatures; lignin molecules stay in quasi-relaxed structures in asphalt mixtures at high temperatures but in collapsed structures at low temperatures. Implementing lignin monomer, dimer, and polymer into the model asphalt mixture can improve its density. Although lignin in different chain lengths aggregates in asphalt, lignin can modify the packing between different components in asphalt media at different temperatures. The work suggests that temperature can significantly influence the miscibility of lignin polymer in asphalt and that lignin can function as both a modifier and a resin in asphalt.

Analysis of Volatile Hydrocarbons (Pentene Dimers and Terpenes) in Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Optimization by Response Surface Methodology and Validation of HS-SPME-GC-MS Method

A head space-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometery (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method for the simultaneous analysis of pentene dimers from lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) was proposed. A Doehlert design was performed; the conditions of the HS-SPME preconcentration step (extraction temperature, extraction time, sample amount, and desorption time) were optimized by response surface methodology, allowing defining the method operable design region. A quantitative method was set up using the multiple internal standard normalization approach: four internal standards were used, and the most suitable one was selected for area normalization of each external standard. The quantitative method was successfully validated and applied to a series of monocultivar EVOOs. This is the first paper in which a quantitative method using commercial standards has been proposed for the analysis of an important class of molecules of EVOO such as pentene dimers. The optimized method is suitable for routine analysis aimed at characterizing high quality EVOOs.

Chemical upcycling of PVC-containing plastic wastes by thermal degradation and catalysis in a chlorine-rich environment

Chlorine (Cl)-containing chemicals, including hydrogen chloride, generated during thermal degradation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and corresponding mixture impede the chemical recycling of PVC-containing plastic wastes. While upgrading plastic-derived vapors, the presence of Cl-containing chemicals may deactivate the catalysts. Accordingly, herein, catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis vapor prepared from a mixture of PVC and polyolefins is performed using a fixed-bed reactor comprising zeolites. Among the H-forms of zeolites (namely, ZSM-5, Y, β, and chabazite) used in this study, a higher yield of gas products composed of hydrocarbons with lower carbon numbers is obtained using H-ZSM-5, thus indicating further decomposition of the pyrolysis vapor to C1-C4 hydrocarbons on it. Although the formation of aromatic compounds is better on H-ZSM-5, product distributions can be adjusted by further modifying the acidic properties via the alteration of the Si/Al molar ratio, and maximum yields of C1-C4 compounds (60.8%) and olefins (64.7%) are achieved using a Si/Al molar ratio of 50. Additionally, metal ion exchange on H-ZSM-5 is conducted, and upgrading of PVC-containing waste-derived vapor to aromatic chemicals and small hydrocarbon molecules was successfully performed using Co-substituted H-ZSM-5. It reveals that the highest yield of gas products on 1.74 wt% cobalt (Co)-substituted H-ZSM-5 is acquired via the selection of an appropriate metal and metal ion concentration adjustment. Nevertheless, introduction of excess Co into the H-ZSM-5 surface decreases the cracking activity, thereby implying that highly distributed Co is required to achieve excellent cracking activity. The addition of Co also adjusted the acid types of H-ZSM-5, and more Lewis acid sites compared to Brønsted acid sites selectively produced olefins and naphthenes over paraffins and aromatics. The proposed approach can be a feasible process to produce valuable petroleum-replacing chemicals from Cl-containing mixed plastic wastes, contributing to the closed loops for upcycling plastic wastes.

Characterization of viscoelastic behavior of basalt fiber asphalt mixtures based on discrete and continuous spectrum models

In order to analyze the differences between the master curves of relaxation modulus E(t) and creep compliance J(t) obtained from discrete and continuous spectrum models, and to comprehensively evaluate the effect of basalt fiber content on the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt mixtures, complex modulus tests were conducted for asphalt mixtures with fiber content of 0%, 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively. Consequently, the master curves of Viscoelastic Parameters of asphalt mixtures were constructed according to the generalized Sigmoidal model(GSM) and the approximate Kramers-Kronig (K-K) relationship. Then, transformation of master curves using discrete and continuous spectrum models to obtain the models of E(t) and J(t) containing all viscoelastic information. Also, the accuracy of the models of E(t) and J(t) was evaluated. The results show that the addition of basalt fibers improves the strength, stress relaxation and deformation resistance of asphalt mixtures. It is worth noting that basalt fibers achieve the improvement of asphalt mixtures by changing their internal structure. Considering the different viscoelastic master curves at four dosages, the optimum fiber dosage was 0.2%. In addition, both discrete and continuous model conversion methods can obtain high accuracy conversion results.

Environmental impact of sewage sludge co-digestion with food waste and fat-oil-grease: Integrating plant-wide modeling with life cycle assessment approach

Anaerobic co-digestion of fat-oil-grease (FOG) and food waste (FW) with sewage sludge (SS) in wastewater treatment plants is a method used to increase biogas production. In this study, digestion scenarios were compared using plant-wide modeling and life cycle assessment: Scenario-0 (mono-digestion of waste-activated sludge (WAS)), Scenario-1 (co-digestion of WAS with FOG), and Scenario-2 (co-digestion of WAS with FW). Scenario-0, with the highest energy use and landfilling of FOG/FW, has the worst environmental impact. Scenario-1 and Scenario-2 minimize the environmental load by energy recovery and avoiding landfilling of organic waste. Scenario-wise, the change in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from treatment was negligible. However, due to the impact of landfilling, GHG emissions in Scenario-0 were 21% and 30% higher than in Scenario-1 and 2, respectively. The environmental benefit of anaerobic co-digestion of FOG/FW with SS is not only in the contribution to energy production but also in the recycling of organic waste.

Thermodynamic study on hydrated bilayers of ether-linked phosphatidylcholines with terminal perfluorobutyl group

Novel terminally perfluorobutyl group-containing ether-linked phosphatidylcholines with different alkyl chain lengths (di-O-F4-Cn-PCs, n = 14,16 and 18) were developed as possible materials for stable liposomes aiming at applications of structural and functional analyses of membrane proteins. Differential scanning calorimetric investigations of the thermotropic transition of hydrated di-O-F4-Cn-PC bilayers demonstrated that the transition temperature of every di-O-F4-Cn-PC decreases by ~20 °C compared to their corresponding non-fluorinated PCs, di-O-Cn-PCs. With the elongation of the hydrophobic chain, on the other hand, the transition enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) increased in a linear manner. Comparison of ΔH and ΔS values against the net hydrocarbon chain length between di-O-F4-Cn-PCs and di-O-Cn-PCs strongly suggests that in the thermotropic transition of the di-O-F4-Cn-PC membrane, the perfluorobutyl segments undergo very limited structural changes; therefore, the hydrocarbon segments are mainly responsible for the phase transition.
