Photochemical or thermal chelate exchange in the ruthenium coordination sphere of complexes of the Ru(phen)(2)L family (L = diimine or dinitrile ligands)

New Ru Complexes Containing the N-Tridentate bpea and Phosphine Ligands: Consequences of Meridional vs Facial Geometry

The synthesis and isolation of the complex cis,fac-[RuIICl2(bpea)(PPh3)][3; bpea = N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylamine] and three geometrical isomers of the complex [RuIICl(bpea)(dppe)](BF4) [4; dppe = (1,2-diphenylphosphino)ethane], trans,fac (4a), cis,fac (4b), and mer(down) (4c), have been described (see Chart 1 for a drawing of their structures). These complexes have been characterized through analytical, spectroscopic (IR, UV/vis, and 1D and 2D NMR), and electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) techniques. In addition, complexes 3, 4a, and 4b have been further characterized in the solid state through monocrystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The molecular and electronic structures of isomers 4a, 4b, 4c, and 4d (the mer(up) isomer) have also been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, their low-energy electronic transitions have been simulated using time-dependent DFT approaches, which have allowed unraveling of their metal-to-ligand charge-transfer nature. Complexes 3 and 4a-c are capable of catalyzing H-transfer types of reactions between alcohols and aromatic ketones such as acetophenone and 2,2-dimethylpropiophenone (DP). A strong influence of the facial versus meridional geometry in the bpea ligand coordination mode is observed for these catalytic reactions, with the meridional isomer being much more active than the facial one. The meridional isomer is even capable of carrying out the H-transfer reaction of bulky substrates such as DP at room temperature.

Synthesis and Photochemistry of a Two-Position Ru(terpy)(phen)(L)2+ Scorpionate Complex

A dissymmetric 1,10-phenanthroline chelate (N-phen-S) bearing two polyether chains terminated by two monodentate ligands of the benzonitrile (N) and dialkylesulfoxide (S) types was synthesized, characterized, and coordinated to ruthenium. The corresponding Ru(terpy)(N-phen-S)2+ complexes (terpy = 4'-(3,5-ditertiobutylphenyl)-2,2';6',2' '-terpyridine) were fully characterized as being two coordination isomers of the scorpionate type with one of the two tails occupying the sixth position on the coordination sphere. Photoexpulsion of the coordinated tail led to opening of the ruthena-macrocycle and subsequent rearrangement of the bidentate chelate. This rearrangement consisted of a 90 degrees rotation of the phenanthroline around the ruthenium atom. Selective irradiation of one isomer in a mixture of the two was undertaken using band-pass filters; this resulted in an enrichment of the nonirradiated isomer in the mixture. Thermal back-coordination of the tail was investigated in the dark. It took place quantitatively from the corresponding ruthenium chloride complex by trapping of the anion with silver salts.

Far-red luminescent ruthenium pyridylimine complexes; building blocks for multinuclear arrays

Ruthenium(II) pyridylimine complexes are explored for their potential as units that might be incorporated into electronic or photonic arrays. The complexes [Ru(bipy)2(L)][PF6]2 (1) and [Ru(tpy)(L)Cl][BF4] (2) with L = phenylpyridin-2-ylmethylene-amine are synthesized and fully characterised using X-ray diffraction analysis and (2D) NMR spectroscopy. 1 displays emission in the far-red area of the spectrum at room temperature. The emission is significantly shifted to longer wavelength with respect to [Ru(bpy)3]2+ indicating that the lowest MLCT state is localised on the pyridylimine ligand. 2 is non-emissive at room temperature and at 77 K.

Atropisomeric Discrimination in New RuII Complexes Containing theC2-Symmetric Didentate Chiral Phenyl-1,2-bisoxazolinic Ligand

A new family of Ru(II) complexes containing the tridentate meridional 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (trpy) ligand, a C(2)-symmetric didentate chiral oxazolinic ligand 1,2-bis[4'-alkyl-4',5'-dihydro-2'-oxazolyl]benzene (Phbox-R, R = Et or iPr), and a monodentate ligand, of general formula [Ru(Y)(trpy)(Phbox-R)](n+) (Y = Cl, H(2)O, py, MeCN, or 2-OH-py (2-hydroxypyridine)) have been prepared and thoroughly characterized. In the solid state the complexes have been characterized by IR spectroscopy and by X-ray diffraction analysis in two cases. In solution, UV/Vis, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) NMR spectroscopy techniques have been used. We have also performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations with these complexes to interpret and complement experimental results. The oxazolinic ligand Phbox-R exhibits free rotation along the phenyloxazoline axes. Upon coordination this rotation is restricted by an energy barrier of 26.0 kcal mol(-1) for the case of [Ru(trpy)(Phbox-iPr)(MeCN)](2+) thus preventing its potential interconversion. Furthermore due to steric effects the two atropisomers differ in energy by 5.7 kcal mol(-1) and as a consequence only one of them is obtained in the synthesis. Subtle but important structural effects occur upon changing the monodentate ligands that are detected by NMR spectroscopy in solution and interpreted by using their calculated DFT structures.

[1,10]-Phenanthrolin-2-yl Ketones and Their Coordination Chemistry

A synthetic protocol involving the Friedländer reaction of 8-amino-7-quinolinecarbaldehyde followed by potassium dichromate oxidation was applied to 2,3,4-pentanetrione-3-oxime and 1-(pyrid-2'-yl)propane-1,2-dione-1-oxime to provide the ligands di-(phenathrolin-2-yl)-methanone (1) and phenanthrolin-2-yl-pyrid-2-yl-methanone (8), respectively. Ligand 1 complexed as a planar tetradentate with Pd(II) to form [Pd(1)](BF4)2 and with Ru(II) and two 4-substituted pyridines (4-R-py) to form [Ru(1)(4-R-py)2](PF6)2 where R = CF3, CH3, and Me2N. With [Ru(bpy)2Cl2], the dinuclear complex [(bpy)2Ru(1)Ru(bpy)2](PF6)4 was formed (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Ligand 8 afforded the homoleptic Ru(II) complex [Ru(8)2](PF6)2, as well as the heteroleptic complex [Ru(8)(tpy)](PF6)2 (tpy = 2,2';6,2''-terpyridine). The ligands and complexes were characterized by their NMR and IR spectra, as well as an X-ray structure determination of [Ru(1)(4-CH3-py)2](PF6)2. Electrochemical analysis indicated metal-based oxidation and ligand-based reduction that was consistent with results from electronic absorption spectra. The complexes [Ru(1)(4-R-py)2](PF6)2 were sensitive to the 4-substituent on the axial pyridine: electron donor groups facilitated the oxidation while electron-withdrawing groups impeded it.

Light-Driven Expulsion of the Sterically Hindering Ligand L in Tris-diimine Ruthenium(II) Complexes of the Ru(phen)2(L)2+ Family: A Pronounced Ring Effect

Three new ruthenium(II) complexes have been prepared which contain two 1,10-phenanthroline units and a third sterically hindering chelate. In one case, the hindering ligand is a disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) attached to two very bulky manisyl groups. The two other systems are similar in terms of size of the hindering groups (anisyl substituents) located close to the central metal. The complexes investigated in the Present Report are aimed at providing building blocks of future light-driven molecular machines. The photochemical expulsion of the sterically hindering chelate has thus been studied by UV-vis spectroscopy and 1H NMR. Surprisingly, the manisyl-containing complex turned out to be photochemically inert, indicating that a too bulky group acts as a protecting function versus decomplexation rather than as a destabilizing group. For the two other systems, a pronounced ring effect was observed: whereas the acyclic systems undergo fast photochemical expulsion of the bipy-based ligand, in the cyclic complex, the bipy-incorporating ring is decoordinated about 5 times less efficiently than the acyclic ligand of the previous case. These observations on the strong dependence of the photochemical behavior of the ruthenium(II) complexes on their structural properties are corroborated by X-ray diffraction studies on the three compounds investigated.

The Effect of Reduction on Rhenium(I) Complexes with Binaphthyridine and Biquinoline Ligands: A Spectroscopic and Computational Study

A number of rhenium complexes with binaphthyridine and biquinoline ligands have been synthesized and studied. These are [Re(L)(CO)3Cl] where L = 3,3'-dimethylene-2,2'-bi-1,8-naphthyridine (dbn), 2,2'-bi-1,8-naphthyridine (bn), 3,3'-dimethylene-2,2'-biquinoline (dbq), and 3,3'-dimethyl-2,2'-biquinoline (diq). This series represents ligands in which the electronic properties and steric preferences are tuned. These complexes are modeled using density functional theory (DFT). An analysis of the resonance Raman spectra for these complexes, in concert with the vibrational assignments, reveals that the accepting molecular orbital (MO) in the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition is the LUMO and causes bonding changes at the inter-ring section of the ligand. The electronic absorption spectroelectrochemistry for the reduced complexes of [Re(dbn)(CO)3Cl], [Re(dbq)(CO)3Cl], and [Re(diq)(CO)3Cl] suggest that the singly occupied MO is delocalized over the entire ligand structure despite the nonplanar nature of the diq ligand in [Re(diq)(CO)3Cl]. The IR spectroelectrochemistry for [Re(dbn)(CO)3Cl], [Re(dbq)(CO)3Cl], and [Re(bn)(CO)3Cl] reveal that reduction lowers the CO ligand vibrational frequencies to a similar extent in all three complexes. The substitution of naphthyridine for quinoline has little effect on the nature of the singly occupied MO. These data are supported by DFT calculations on the reduced complexes, which reveal that the ligands are flattened out by reduction: This may explain the similarity in the properties of the reduced complexes.

Synthesis, Structure, and Substitution Mechanism of New Ru(II) Complexes Containing 1,4,7-Trithiacyclononane and 1,10-Phenanthroline Ligands

Two new Ru complexes containing the 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane ([9]aneS3, SCH2CH2SCH2CH2SCH2CH2) ligands of general formula [Ru(phen)(L)([9]aneS3)]2+ (L = MeCN, 3; L = pyridine (py), 4) have been prepared and thoroughly characterized. Structural characterization in the solid state has been performed by means of X-ray diffraction analyses, which show a distorted octahedral environment for a diamagnetic d6 Ru(II), as expected. 1H NMR spectroscopy provides evidence that the same structural arrangement is maintained in solution. Further spectroscopic characterization has been carried out by UV-vis spectroscopy where the higher acceptor capability of MeCN versus the py ligand is manifested in a 9-15-nm blue shift in its MLCT bands. The E1/2 redox potential of the Ru(III)/Ru(II) couple for 3 is anodically shifted with respect to its Ru-py analogue, 4, by 60 mV, which is also in agreement with a higher electron-withdrawing capacity of the former. The mechanism for the reaction Ru-py + MeCN--> Ru-MeCN + py has also been investigated at different temperatures with and without irradiation. In the absence of irradiation at 326 K, the thermal process gives kinetic constants of k2 = 1.4 x 10(-5) s(-1) (DeltaH(++) = 108 +/- 3 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS(++) = -8 +/- 9 J K(-1) mol(-1)) and k-2 = 2.9 x 10(-6) s(-1) (DeltaH(++) = 121 +/- 1 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS(++) = 18 +/- 3 J K(-1) mol(-1)). The phototriggered process is faster and consists of preequilibrium formation of an intermediate that thermally decays to the final Ru-MeCN complex with an apparent rate constant of (k1Khnu)app = 1.8 x 10(-4) s(-1) at 304 K, under the continuous irradiation experimental conditions used.

Toward a Photochemical and Thermal Molecular Machine: Reversible Ligand Dissociation and Binding in a Ruthenium(II)-2,2‘-bipyridine Complex with Tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine

A Ru(II) complex having tris(2-pyridylmethl)amine (TPA) and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), [Ru(TPA)(bpy)]X(2) (X = ClO(4), PF(6)), exhibited a severe distortion of the coordination of the axial pyridine moiety of TPA due to steric hindrance. The complex showed interesting dissociation-binding behavior of the axial pyridine arm to form a solvent adduct with TPA ligation in a unique meridional tridentate fashion. The complex undergoes thermal dissociation to form solvent-coordinated species via an S(N)2-like mechanism with activation energy of 117 kJ/mol. In contrast, the complex showed reversible photochemical dissociation and rebinding via an S(N)1-like mechanism by MLCT irradiation. The photochemical dissociation was accelerated approximately 200-fold faster than the thermal process. The dissociation process involves selective binding behavior toward external ligands (solvents) with pi-acceptor character, which is indispensable, and no sigma-donating molecules could bind to the Ru(II) center. The guest molecule can be released upon photoirradiation after its thermal binding.

Synthesis, Structure, and Acid−Base and Redox Properties of a Family of New Ru(II) Isomeric Complexes Containing the Trpy and the Dinucleating Hbpp Ligands

Three pairs of mononuclear geometrical isomers containing the ligand 3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazole (Hbpp) of general formula in- and out-[RuII(Hbpp)(trpy)X](n+) (trpy=2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine; X=Cl, n=1, 2a,b; X=H2O, n=2, 3a,b; X=py (pyridine), n=2, 4a,b) have been prepared through two different synthetic routes, isolated, and structurally characterized. The solid state structural characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction analysis of four complexes: 2a-4a and 4b. The structural characterization in solution was performed by means of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy for complexes 2a,b and 4a,b and coincides with the structures found in the solid state. All complexes were also spectroscopically characterized by UV-vis which also allowed us to carry out spectrophotometric acid-base titrations. Thus, a number of species were spectroscopically characterized with the same oxidation state but with a different degree of protonation. As an example, for 3a three pKa values were obtained: pKa1(RuII)=2.13, pKa2(RuII)=6.88, and pKa3(RuII)=11.09. The redox properties were also studied, giving in all cases a number of electron transfers coupled to proton transfers. The pH dependency of the redox potentials allowed us to calculate the pKa of the complexes in the Ru(III) oxidation state. For complex 3a, these were found to be pKa1(RuIII)=0.01, pKa2(RuIII)=2.78, and pKa3(RuIII)=5.43. The oxidation state Ru(IV) was only reached from the Ru-OH2 type of complexes 3a or 3b. It has also been shown that the RuIV=O species derived from 3a is capable of electrocatalytically oxidizing benzyl alcohol with a second-order rate constant of kcat=17.1 M(-1) s(-1).

Synthesis, structure, and spectroscopic, photochemical, redox, and catalytic properties of ruthenium(II) isomeric complexes containing dimethyl sulfoxide, chloro, and the dinucleating bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazole ligands

Two isomeric Ru(II) complexes containing the dinucleating Hbpp (3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazole) ligand together with Cl and dmso ligands have been prepared and their structural, spectroscopic, electrochemical, photochemical, and catalytic properties studied. The crystal structures of trans,cis-[Ru(II)Cl(2)(Hbpp)(dmso)(2)], 2a, and cis(out),cis-[Ru(II)Cl(2)(Hbpp)(dmso)(2)], 2b, have been solved by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showing a distorted octahedral geometry for the metal center where the dmso ligands coordinate through their S atom. 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy corroborates a similar structure in solution for both isomers. Exposure of either 2a or 2b in acetonitrile solution under UV light produces a substitution of one dmso ligand by a solvent molecule generating the same product namely, cis(out)-[Ru(II)Cl(2)(Hbpp)(MeCN)(dmso)], 4. While the 1 e(-) oxidation of 2b or cis(out),cis-[Ru(II)Cl(2)(bpp)(dmso)(2)](+), 3b, generates a stable product, the same process for 2a or trans,cis-[Ru(II)Cl(2)(bpp)(dmso)(2)](+), 3a, produces the interesting linkage isomerization phenomenon where the dmso ligand switches its bond from Ru-S to Ru-O (K(III)(O)(-->)(S) = 0.25 +/- 0.025, k(III)(O)(-->)(S) = 0.017 s(-1), and k(III)(S)(-->)(O) = 0.065 s(-1); K(II)(O)(-->)(S) = 6.45 x 10(9), k(II)(O)(-->)(S) = 0.132 s(-1), k(II)(S)(-->)(O) = 2.1 x 10(-11) s(-1)). Finally complex 3a presents a relatively high activity as hydrogen transfer catalyst, with regard to its ability to transform acetophenone into 2-phenylethyl alcohol using 2-propanol as the source of hydrogen atoms.
