Abstract
Coordination of FeCl3 to the title ligand yields a mononuclear iron(III) complex 1, which was characterized by spectroscopic techniques and X-ray diffraction. The ligand is (kappa3-N) tridentate and the metal, which lies in a pseudo-octahedral environment, is bound to a phenolate group from the catechol substituent. The dichloroiron(II) complex 2 was easily obtained by metalation of the ligand with FeCl2 and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. In their cyclic voltammograms both 1 and 2 display the same reversible FeII/FeIII wave at E1/2=10 mV (vs. SCE). Reduction of compound 1 with Zn/Hg yields 2', which displays identical properties to 2. Taken together, these findings indicate that in spite of the different oxidation state of the metal in 2, no major geometrical/structural change is observed at the metal center with respect to 1. The reaction of 2 with dioxygen in the absence of organic substrates proceeds extremely rapidly and yields compound 3, which is a diiron(III) derivative whose X-ray crystal structure is also reported. The possibility of a radical-based mechanism is discussed. Compound 3 displays an unusual geometry: one iron(III) center is seven-coordinate, whereas the other lies in a square-pyramidal environment. The two iron atoms are bridged by the catecholato substituents. To the best of our knowledge, 3 is the first example of a seven-coordinate iron(III) derivative with tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligands.

Abstract
A series of mononuclear iron(II) and zinc(II) complexes of the new chiral Py(ProMe)2 ligand (Py(ProMe)2 = 2,6-bis[[(S)-2-(methyloxycarbonyl)-1-pyrrolidinyl]methyl]pyridine) have been prepared. The molecular geometry in the solid state (X-ray crystal structures) of the complexes [FeCl2(Py(ProMe)2)] (1), [ZnCl2(Py(ProMe)2)] (2), [Fe(OTf)2(Py(ProMe)2)] (3), [Fe(Py(ProMe)2)(OH2)2](OTf)2 (4), and [Zn(OTf)(Py(ProMe)2)](OTf) (5) are reported. They all show a meridional NN'N coordination of the Py(ProMe)2 ligand. The bis-chloride derivatives 1 and 2 represent neutral isostructural five-coordinated complexes with a distorted geometry around the metal center. Unusual seven-coordinate iron(II) complexes 3 and 4 having a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry were obtained using weakly coordinating triflate anions. The reaction of Zn(OTf)2 with the Py(ProMe)2 ligand afforded complex 5 with a distorted octahedral geometry around the zinc center. All complexes were formed as single diastereoisomers. In the case of complexes 3-5, the oxygen atoms of both carbonyl groups of the ligand are also coordinated to the metal. The stereochemistry of the coordinated tertiary amine donors in complexes 3-5 is of opposite configuration as in complexes 1 and 2 as a result of the planar penta-coordination of the ligand Py(ProMe)2. Complexes 1, 2, and 5 have an overall -configuration at their metal center, while the Fe(II) ion in complexes 3 and 4 has the opposite delta-configuration (crystal structures and CD measurements). The magnetic moments of iron complexes 1, 3, and 4 correspond to that of high-spin d6 Fe(II) complexes. The solution structures of complexes 1-5 were characterized by means of UV-vis, IR, conductivity, and CD measurements and their electrochemical behavior. These studies showed that the coordination environment of 1 and 2 observed in the solid state is maintained in solution. In coordinating solvents, the triflate anion (3, 5) or water (4) co-ligands of complexes 3-5 are replaced by solvent molecules with retention of the original pentagonal bipyramidal and octahedral geometry, respectively.

Abstract
The mixed N3S(thiolate) ligand 1-[bis[2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl]amino]-2-methylpropane-2-thiol (Py2SH) was used in the synthesis of four iron(II) complexes: [(Py2S)FeCl] (1), [(Py2S)FeBr] (2), [(Py2S)4Fe5II(mu-OH)2](BF4)4 (3), and [(Py2S)2Fe2II(mu-OH)]BF4 (4). The X-ray structures of 1 and 2 revealed monomeric iron(II)-alkylthiolate complexes with distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometries. The paramagnetic 1H NMR spectra of 1 and 2 display resonances from delta = -25 ppm to +100 ppm, consistent with a high-spin iron(II) ion (S = 2). Spectral assignments were made on the basis of chemical shift information and T1 measurements and show the monomeric structures are intact in solution. To provide entry into hydroxide-containing complexes, a novel synthetic method was developed involving strict aprotic conditions and limiting amounts of H2O. Reaction of Py2SH with NaH and Fe(BF4)2.6 H2O under aprotic conditions led to the isolation of the pentanuclear, mu-OH complex 3, which has a novel dimer-of-dimers type structure connected by a central iron atom. Conductivity data on 3 show this structure is retained in CH2Cl2. Rational modification of the ligand-to-metal ratio allows control over the nuclearity of the product, yielding the dinuclear complex 4. The X-ray structure of 4 reveals an unprecedented face-sharing, biooctahedral complex with an [S2O] bridging arrangement. The magnetic properties of 3 and 4 in the range 1.9-300 K were successfully modeled. Dinuclear 4 is antiferromagnetically coupled [J = -18.8(2) cm(-1)]. Pentanuclear 3 exhibits ferrimagnetic behavior, with a high-spin ground state of S(T) = 6, and was best modeled with three different exchange parameters [J = -15.3(2), J' = -24.7(3), and J'' = -5.36(7) cm(-1)]. DFT calculations provided good support for the interpretation of the magnetic properties.

Abstract
Mononuclear Ni(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) complexes of the bppppa (N,N-bis[(6-phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl]-N-[(6-pivaloylamido-2-pyridyl)methyl]amine) ligand have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR, UV-vis (Ni(II) and Co(II)) and infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Each complex has the empirical formula [(bppppa)M](ClO4)2 (M = Ni(II), 2; Zn(II), 3; Co(II), 4) and in the solid state exhibits a metal center having a coordination number of five; albeit, the cation of 2 also has a sixth weak interaction involving a perchlorate anion. Treatment of [(bppppa)Ni](ClO4)2 (2) with 1 equiv of acetohydroxamic acid results in the formation of [(bppppa)Ni(HONHC(O)CH3)](ClO4)2 (1), a novel Ni(II) complex having a coordinated neutral acetohydroxamic acid ligand. In 1, one phenyl-appended pyridyl donor of the bppppa chelate ligand is dissociated from the metal center and acts as a hydrogen bond acceptor for the hydroxyl group of the bound acetohydroxamic acid ligand. Treatment of 1 with excess water results in the formation of 2 and free acetohydroxamic acid. We hypothesize that this reaction occurs due to disruption of the intramolecular hydrogen bonding interaction involving the bound acid. In this series of reactions, the bppppa ligand exhibits behavior reminiscent of a type III hemilabile ligand in terms of one phenylpyridyl donor. Treatment of 3 or 4 with acetohydroxamic acid results in no reaction, indicating that the bppppa-ligated Ni(II) derivative 2 exhibits unique coordination chemistry with respect to reaction with acetohydroxamic acid within this series of complexes. We attribute this reactivity to the ability of the bppppa-ligated Ni(II) center to adopt a pseudo-octahedral geometry, whereas the Zn(II) and Co(II) complexes retain five coordinate metal centers.

Abstract
Alkylation of (ArNHCH2CH2){(2-C5H4N)CH2}NH with RX [RX = MeI, 4-CH2=CH(C6H4)CH2Cl) and (2-C5H5N)CH2Cl] in the presence of base has allowed access to the sterically demanding multidentate nitrogen donor ligands, {(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)NHCH2CH2}{(2-C5H4N)CH2}NMe (L1), {(2,6-Me3C6H3)NHCH2CH2}{(2-C5H4N)CH2}NCH2(C6H4)-4-CH=CH2 (L2) and (ArNHCH2CH2){(2-C5H4N)CH2}2N (Ar = 2,4-Me2C6H3 L3a, 2,6-Me2C6H3 L3b) in moderate yield. L3 can also be prepared in higher yield by the reaction of (NH2CH2CH2){(2-C5H4N)CH2}2N with the corresponding aryl bromide in the presence of base and a palladium(0) catalyst. Treatment of L1 or L2 with MCl2 [MCl2 = CoCl2.6H2O or FeCl2(THF)1.5] in THF affords the high spin complexes [(L1)MCl2](M = Co 1a, Fe 1b) and [(L2)MCl2](M = Co 2a, Fe 2b) in good yield, respectively; the molecular structure of reveals a five-coordinate metal centre with bound in a facial fashion. The six-coordinate complexes, [(L3a)MCl2](M = Co 3a, Fe 3b, Mn 3c) are accessible on treatment of tripodal L3a with MCl2. In contrast, the reaction with the more sterically encumbered leads to the pseudo-five-coordinate species [(L3b)MCl2](M = Co 4a, Fe 4b) and, in the case of manganese, dimeric [(L3b)MnCl(mu-Cl)]2 (4c); in 4a and 4b the aryl-substituted amine arm forms a partial interaction with the metal centre while in 4c the arm is pendant. The single crystal X-ray structures of , 1a, 3b.MeCN, 3c.MeCN, 4b.MeCN and 4c are described as are the solution state properties of 3b and 4b.

Abstract
Mononuclear oxovanadium(IV) and dioxovanadium(V) complexes of tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa) have been prepared for the first time. Crystal structure determinations of three oxovanadium(IV) complexes, [VO(SO4)(tpa)], [VOCl(tpa)]PF6, or [VOBr(tpa)]PF6, and a dioxovanadium(v) complex [V(O)2(tpa)]PF6 disclosed that the tertiary nitrogen of the tpa ligand always occupies the trans-to-oxo site. The structures of an oxo-peroxo complex [VO(O2)(tpa)]Cl that was prepared previously and of a mu-oxo vanadium(III) complex [{VCl(tpa)}2(mu-O)](PF6)2 have also been determined. The tertiary nitrogen is located at a trans site to the peroxo and chloride ligands, respectively. The total sums of the four V-N bond lengths from the tpa ligand are remarkably similar among the six complexes, indicating that the vanadium oxidation states become less influential in tpa bonding due primarily to the coordination of electron-donating oxo ligand(s). Absorption spectra of [VOCl(tpa)]+ in acetonitrile showed a significant change upon addition of p-toluenesulfonic acid and HClO4, but not on addition of benzoic acid. Protonation at the oxo ligand by the former two acids is suggested. Cyclic voltammetric studies in acetonitrile verified the proton-coupled redox behavior of the V(III)/V(IV) process involving the oxo ligand for the first time. From the dependence of the added p-toluenesulfonic acid to the CV, redox potentials for the following species have been estimated: [V(IV)OCl(tpa)]+/[V(III)OCl(tpa)](E1/2=-1.59 V vs. Fc+/Fc), [V(IV)(OH)Cl(tpa)]2+/[V(III)(OH)Cl(tpa)]+(Epc=-1.34 V), [V(IV)(OH2)Cl(tpa)]3+/[V(III)(OH2)Cl(tpa)]2+(Epa=-0.49 V), and [V(IV)Cl2(tpa)]2+/[V(III)Cl2(tpa)]+(E1/2=-0.89 V). The reduction of [V(V)(O)2(tpa)]+ in 0.05 M [(n-Bu)4N]PF6 acetonitrile showed a major irreversible reduction wave V(V)/(IV) at -1.48 V. The metal reduction potentials of the oxovanadium(IV) and dioxovanadium(V) species are very close, reinforcing the significant influence of the oxo ligand(s).

Abstract
A series of complexes with [Fe(II)(2)(mu-OH)(2)] cores has been synthesized with N3 and N4 ligands and structurally characterized to serve as models for nonheme diiron(II) sites in enzymes that bind and activate O(2). These complexes react with O(2) in solution via bimolecular rate-limiting steps that differ in rate by 10(3)-fold, depending on ligand denticity and steric hindrance near the diiron center. Low-temperature trapping of a (mu-oxo)(mu-1,2-peroxo)diiron(III) intermediate after O(2) binding requires sufficient steric hindrance around the diiron center and the loss of a proton (presumably that of a hydroxo bridge or a yet unobserved hydroperoxo intermediate). The relative stability of these and other (mu-1,2-peroxo)diiron(III) intermediates suggests that these species may not be on the direct pathway for dioxygen activation.

Abstract
The recent discovery of acireductone dioxygenase (ARD), a metalloenzyme containing a mononuclear octahedral Ni(II) center, necessitates the development of model systems for evaluating the role of the metal center in substrate oxidation chemistry. In this work, three Ni(II) complexes of an aryl-appended tris((2-pyridyl)methyl)amine ligand (6-Ph(2)TPA, N,N-bis((6-phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl)-N-((2-pyridyl)methyl)amine), [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Ni(CH(3)CN)(CH(3)OH)](ClO(4))(2) (1), [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Ni(ONHC(O)CH(3))]ClO(4) (3), and [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Ni-Cl(CH(3)CN)]ClO(4) (4), and one Ni(II) complex of tris((2-pyridyl)methyl)amine, [(TPA)Ni(CH(3)CN)(H(2)O)](ClO(4))(2) (2), have been characterized in acetonitrile solution using conductance methods and NMR spectroscopy. In acetonitrile solution, 1-4 have monomeric cations that exhibit isotropically shifted (1)H NMR resonances. Full assignment of these resonances was achieved using one- and two-dimensional (1)H NMR techniques and (2)H NMR of analogues having deuteration of the supporting chelate ligand. COSY cross peaks were observed for pyridyl protons of the 6-Ph(2)TPA ligand in 1 and 3. This study lays the groundwork for using NMR methods to examine chemical reactions of 1 and 2 with model substrates of relevance to ARD.

Abstract
The tris(2-fluoro-6-pyridylmethyl)amine ligand, F3TPA, can easily be prepared by reaction of 2-fluoro-6-bromomethylpyridine with NH4Cl in the presence of NaOH. Complexation to FeCl2 affords the high-spin F3TPAFe(II)Cl2 complex, the X-ray structure of which is reported. The three fluorine substituents provide enough steric hindrance to force the tripod to coordinate in the tridentate mode, affording a trigonal bipyramidal iron center. This complex is thermally stable, and it reacts instantaneously with molecular dioxygen to afford the unsymmetrical micro-oxo dimer F3TPAFe(III)ClOFe(III)Cl3 as the major product, together with small amounts of the mixed salt [F3TPAFe(II)Cl]2, [Fe(III)2OCl6]. These two complexes have been isolated and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. A mechanism by which they are obtained is suggested and seems to parallel the well-known process of autoxidation of ferrous porphyrins.

Abstract
The aryl-substituted N-picolylethylenediamine and diethylenetriamine ligands, (ArNHCH(2)CH(2))[(2-C(5)H(4)N)CH(2)]NH and (ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(2)NH (Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3), 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2)), have been prepared by employing palladium-catalysed N-C(aryl) coupling reactions of the corresponding primary amines with aryl bromide. Treatment of MCl(2) with (ArNHCH(2)CH(2))[(2-C(5)H(4)N)CH(2)]NH affords [[(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))((2-C(5)H(4)N)CH(2))NH]CoCl(2)](Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) 1a; 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2)) 1b and [[(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))((2-C(5)H(4)N)CH(2))NH]FeCl(2)](n)(n= 1, Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) 2a; n= 2, 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2) 2b) in high yield. The X-ray structures of 1a and 1b are isostructural and reveal the metal centres to adopt distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometries with the N,N,N-chelates adopting fac-structures. A facial coordination mode of the ligand is also observed in bimetallic 2b, however, in 2a the N,N,N-chelate adopts a mer-configuration with the metal centre adopting a geometry best described as square pyramidal. Solution studies indicate that mer-fac isomerisation is a facile process for these systems at room temperature. Quantum mechanical calculations (DFT) have been performed on 1a and 2a, in which the ligands employed are identical, and show the fac- to be marginally more stable than the mer-configuration for cobalt (1a) while for iron (2a) the converse is evident. Reaction of (ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(2)NH with CoCl(2) gave the five-coordinate complexes [[(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(2)NH]CoCl(2)](Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) 3a, 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2) 3b), in which the ligand adopts a mer-configuration; no reaction occurred with FeCl(2). All complexes 1-3 act as modest ethylene oligomerisation catalysts on activation with excess methylaluminoxane (MAO); the iron systems giving linear alpha-olefins while the cobalt systems give mixtures of linear and branched products.

Abstract
Divalent manganese, cobalt, nickel, and zinc complexes of 6-Ph(2)TPA (N,N-bis((6-phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl)-N-((2-pyridyl)methyl)amine; [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Mn(CH(3)OH)(3)](ClO(4))(2) (1), [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Co(CH(3)CN)](ClO(4))(2) (2), [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Ni(CH(3)CN)(CH(3)OH)](ClO(4))(2) (3), [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Zn(CH(3)CN)](ClO(4))(2) (4)) and 6-(Me(2)Ph)(2)TPA (N,N-bis((6-(3,5-dimethyl)phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl)-N-((2-pyridyl)methyl)amine; [(6-(Me(2)Ph)(2)TPA)Ni(CH(3)CN)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (5) and [(6-(Me(2)Ph)(2)TPA)Zn(CH(3)CN)](ClO(4))(2) (6)) have been prepared and characterized. X-ray crystallographic characterization of 1A.CH(3)()OH and 1B.2CH(3)()OH (differing solvates of 1), 2.2CH(3)()CN, 3.CH(3)()OH, 4.2CH(3)()CN, and 6.2.5CH(3)()CN revealed mononuclear cations with one to three coordinated solvent molecules. In 1A.CH(3)()OH and 1B.2CH(3)()OH, one phenyl-substituted pyridyl arm is not coordinated and forms a secondary hydrogen-bonding interaction with a manganese bound methanol molecule. In 2.2CH(3)()CN, 3.CH(3)()OH, 4.2CH(3)()CN, and 6.2.5CH(3)()CN, all pyridyl donors of the 6-Ph(2)TPA and 6-(Me(2)Ph)(2)TPA ligands are coordinated to the divalent metal center. In the cobalt, nickel, and zinc derivatives, CH/pi interactions are found between a bound acetonitrile molecule and the aryl appendages of the 6-Ph(2)TPA and 6-(Me(2)Ph)(2)TPA ligands. (1)H NMR spectra of 4 and 6 in CD(3)NO(2) solution indicate the presence of CH/pi interactions, as an upfield-shifted methyl resonance for a bound acetonitrile molecule is present. Examination of the cyclic voltammetry of 1-3 and 5 revealed no oxidative (M(II)/M(III)) couples. Admixture of equimolar amounts of 6-Ph(2)TPA, M(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O, and Me(4)NOH.5H(2)O, followed by the addition of an equimolar amount of acetohydroxamic acid, yielded the acetohydroxamate complexes [((6-Ph(2)TPA)Mn)(2)(micro-ONHC(O)CH(3))(2)](ClO(4))(2) (8), [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Co(ONHC(O)CH(3))](ClO(4))(2) (9), [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Ni(ONHC(O)CH(3))](ClO(4))(2) (10), and [(6-Ph(2)TPA)Zn(ONHC(O)CH(3))](ClO(4))(2) (11), all of which were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The Mn(II) complex 8.0.75CH(3)()CN.0.75Et(2)()O exhibits a dinuclear structure with bridging hydroxamate ligands, whereas the Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) derivatives all exhibit mononuclear six-coordinate structures with a chelating hydroxamate ligand.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry of chelating silanedithiolato ligands has been investigated on Fe(II), Co(II), Pd(II), Cu(I), and Ag(I). Treatment of M(OAc)(2) (M = Fe, Co, Pd) with cyclotrisilathiane (SSiMe(2))(3) in the presence of Lewis bases resulted in formation of Fe(S(2)SiMe(2))(PMDETA) (1), Fe(S(2)SiMe(2))(Me(3)TACN) (2), Co(S(2)SiMe(2))(PMDETA) (3), and Pd(S(2)SiMe(2))(PEt(3))(2) (4) (PMDETA = N,N,N',N',N' '-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine; Me(3)TACN = 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane). The analogous reactions of M(OAc) (M = Cu, Ag) in the presence of PEt(3) gave rise to the dinuclear complexes M(2)[(SSiMe(2))(2)S](PEt(3))(3) [M = Cu (5), Ag (6)]. Complexes were characterized in solution by (1)H, (31)P[(1)H], and (29)Si[(1)H] NMR and in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Mononuclear complexes 1-3 have a four-membered MS(2)Si ring, and these five-coordinate complexes adopt trigonal-bipyramidal (for the PMDETA adducts) or square-pyramidal (for the Me(3)TACN adduct) geometries. In dimer 6, the (SSiMe(2))(2)S(2)(-) silanedithiolato ligand bridges two metal centers, one of which is three-coordinate and the other four-coordinate. The chelating effect of silanedithiolato ligands leads to an increase in the stability of silylated thiolato complexes.
