Abstract
We report a series of ligands containing pentadentate 6,6′-((methylazanediyl)bis(methylene))dipicolinic acid binding units that form mono- (H2dpama), di- (mX(H2dpama)2), and trinuclear (mX(H2dpama)3) complexes with Mn2+ containing two coordinated water molecules per metal ion, which results in pentagonal bipyramidal coordination around the metal ions. In contrast, the hexadentate ligand 6,6′-((ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))bis(methylene))dipicolinic acid (H2bcpe) forms a complex with distorted octahedral coordination around Mn2+ that lacks coordinated water molecules. The protonation constants of the ligands and the stability constants of the Mn2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ complexes were determined using potentiometric and spectrophotometric titrations in 0.15 M NaCl. The pentadentate dpama2– ligand and the di- and trinucleating mX(dpama)24– and mX(dpama)36– ligands provide metal complexes with stabilities that are very similar to that of the complex with the hexadentate ligand bcpe2–, with log β101 values in the range 10.1–11.6. Cyclic voltammetry experiments on aqueous solutions of the [Mn(bcpe)] complex reveal a quasireversible system with a half-wave potential of +595 mV versus Ag/AgCl. However, [Mn(dpama)] did not suffer oxidation in the range 0.0–1.0 V, revealing a higher resistance toward oxidation. A detailed 1H NMRD and 17O NMR study provided insight into the parameters that govern the relaxivity for these systems. The exchange rate of the coordinated water molecules in [Mn(dpama)] is relatively fast, kex298 = (3.06 ± 0.16) × 108 s–1. The trinuclear [mX(Mn(dpama)(H2O)2)3] complex was found to bind human serum albumin with an association constant of 1286 ± 55 M–1 and a relaxivity of the adduct of 45.2 ± 0.6 mM–1 s–1 at 310 K and 20 MHz.

Abstract
A novel modular approach to electron-deficient and electron-rich M6L4 cages is presented. From the same starting compound, via a minor modulation of the synthesis route, two C3-symmetric ligands L1 and L2 with different electronic properties are obtained in good yield. The trifluoro-triethynylbenzene-based ligand L1 is more electron-deficient than the well-known 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine, while the trimethoxy-triethynylbenzene-based ligand L2 is more electron-rich than the corresponding benzene analogue. Complexation of the ligands with cis-protected square-planar [(dppp)Pt(OTf)2] or [(dppp)Pd(OTf)2] corner-complexes yields two electron-deficient (1a and 1b) and two electron-rich (2a and 2b) M6L4 cages. The single crystal X-ray diffraction study of 1a and 2a confirms the expected octahedral shape with a ca. 2000 Å(3) cavity and ca. 11 Å wide apertures. The crystallographically determined diameters of 1a and 2a are 3.7 and 3.6 nm, respectively. The hydrodynamic diameters obtained from the DOSY NMR in CDCl3:CD3OD (4:1), and diameters calculated from collision cross sections (CCS) acquired by ion-mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) were for all four cages similar. In solution, the cage structures have diameters between 3.3 to 3.6 nm, while in the gas phase the corresponding diameters varied between 3.4 to 3.6 nm. In addition to the structural information the relative stabilities of the Pt6L4 and Pd6L4 cages were studied in the gas phase by collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments, and the photophysical properties of the ligands L1 and L2 and cages 1a, 1b, 2a, and 2b were studied by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Abstract
The discovery of coronands and cryptands, organic compounds that can accommodate metal ions in a preorganized two- or three-dimensional environment, was a milestone in supramolecular chemistry, leading to countless applications from organic synthesis to metallurgy and medicine. These compounds are typically prepared via multistep organic synthesis and one of their characteristic features is the high stability of their covalent framework. Here we report the use of a dynamic covalent exchange reaction for the one-pot template synthesis of a new class of coronates and cryptates, in which acid-labile O,O,O-orthoesters serve as bridgeheads. In contrast to their classic analogues, the compounds described herein are constitutionally dynamic in the presence of acid and can be induced to release their guest via irreversible deconstruction of the cage. These properties open up a wide range of application opportunities, from systems chemistry to molecular sensing and drug delivery. Cryptands and related molecules are macrocyclic polyethers capable of strongly binding cations. Here, the authors use orthoester exchange for the dynamic one-pot synthesis of crypates, which can bind cations and, given their constitutionally dynamic nature, can also be decomposed to release their guest.

Abstract
The ability to modify the structure of nanoscopic assemblies in a controlled fashion is an important prerequisite for the creation of functional supramolecular systems. Here, we describe a heterometallic Pt2Cu2-macrocycle which behaves as a molecular hinge. A square-planar Pt(ii) complex with pendent 2-formylpyridine groups was synthesized and structurally characterized. Condensation of the complex with benzylamine followed by reaction with Cu(MeCN)4BF4 resulted in the formation of a rectangular Pt2Cu2-macrocycle. Upon chemical oxidation of the Cu centers, the macrocycle folds up to adopt a butterfly-like geometry in which the Pt centers approach each other. This process can be reversed by chemical reduction.

Abstract
Efficient sensing of trace amount nitroaromatic (NAC) explosives has become a major research focus in recent time due to concerns over national security as well as their role as environment pollutants. NO2 -containing electron-deficient aromatic compounds, such as picric acid (PA), trinitrotoluene (TNT), and dinitrotoluene (DNT), are the common constituents of many commercially available chemical explosives. In this article, we have summarized our recent developments on the rational design of electron-rich self-assembled discrete molecular sensors and their efficacy in sensing nitroaromatics both in solution as well as in vapor phase. Several π-electron-rich fluorescent metallacycles (squares, rectangles, and tweezers/pincers) and metallacages (trigonal and tetragonal prisms) have been synthesized by means of metal-ligand coordination-bonding interactions, with enough internal space to accommodate electron-deficient nitroaromatics at the molecular level by multiple supramolecular interactions. Such interactions subsequently result in the detectable fluorescence quenching of sensors even in the presence of trace quantities of nitroaromatics. The fascinating sensing characteristics of molecular architectures discussed in this article may enable future development of improved sensors for nitroaromatic explosives.

Abstract
A terpyridine-based, concentration-dependent, facile self-assembly process is reported, resulting in two three-dimensional metallosupramolecular architectures, a bis-rhombus and a tetrahedron, which are formed using a two-dimensional, planar, tris-terpyridine ligand. The interconversion between these two structures is concentration-dependent: at a concentration higher than 12 mg mL(-1), only a bis-rhombus, composed of eight ligands and 12 Cd(2+) ions, is formed; whereas a self-assembled tetrahedron, composed of four ligands and six Cd(2+) ions, appears upon sufficient dilution of the tris-terpyridine-metal solution. At concentrations less than 0.5 mg mL(-1), only the tetrahedron possessing an S4 symmetry axis is detected; upon attempted isolation, it quantitatively reverts to the bis-rhombus. This observation opens an unexpected door to unusual chemical pathways under high dilution conditions.

Abstract
The development of a synthetic approach to a C3v -symmetric tris-salicylaldehyde based on triptycene is presented. The tris-salicylaldehyde is a versatile precursor for porous molecular materials, as demonstrated in the [4+4] condensation reaction with a triptycene triamine to form a molecular shape-persistent porous cube. The amorphous material of the molecular porous cube shows a very high surface area of 1014 m(2) g(-1) (BET model) and a high uptake of CO2 (18.2 wt % at 273 K and 1 bar). Furthermore, during the multistep synthesis of the tris-salicylaldehyde precursor, a relatively rare (twofold) addition of the aryne to the anthracene in the 1,4- and 1,4,5,8-positions have been found during a Diels-Alder reaction, as proven by X-ray structure analysis.

Abstract
Using a series of tritopic 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands constructed on adamantane, three discrete 3D metallo-supramolecular architectures were assembled, i.e., trigonal bipyramidal, tetrahedron, and cube. The self-assembly used tritopic ligands as corner directing units and metal ions as glue units at the edge. The angles of the linkers between adamantane and tpy head play a critical role in guiding the assembled structures, which have the general formula of M3nL2n, where M denotes metal ion and L denotes ligand. All complexes were fully characterized by (1)H, (13)C NMR, diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and traveling-wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry. The binary mixtures of LA and LC or LB and LC underwent a self-sorting process that led to the self-assembly of discrete 3D structures. The self-sorting behavior is solely based on the angles precoded within the arm of tritopic ligands. Moreover, kinetic study of preassembled cube and tetrahedron demonstrated a slow ligand exchange process toward a statistical mixture of hetero tetrahedrons with LA and LB.

Abstract
A supramolecular approach that uses hydrogen-bonding interaction as a driving force to accomplish exceptional self-sorting in the formation of imine-based covalent organic cages is discussed. Utilizing the dynamic covalent chemistry approach from three geometrically similar dialdehydes (A, B, and D) and the flexible triamine tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (X), three new [3+2] self-assembled nanoscopic organic cages have been synthesized and fully characterized by various techniques. When a complex mixture of the dialdehydes and triamine X was subjected to reaction, it was found that only dialdehyde B (which has OH groups for H-bonding) reacted to form the corresponding cage B3X2 selectively. Surprisingly, the same reaction in the absence of aldehyde B yielded a mixture of products. Theoretical and experimental investigations are in complete agreement that the presence of the hydroxyl moiety adjacent to the aldehyde functionality in B is responsible for the selective formation of cage B3X2 from a complex reaction mixture. This spectacular selection was further analyzed by transforming a nonpreferred (non-hydroxy) cage into a preferred (hydroxy) cage B3X2 by treating the former with aldehyde B. The role of the H-bond in partner selection in a mixture of two dialdehydes and two amines has also been established. Moreover, an example of unconventional imine bond metathesis in organic cage-to-cage transformation is reported.

Abstract
Skin photosensitivity remains one of the main limitations in photodynamic therapy. In this Concept article a strategy to overcome this limitation is described, in which the photosensitizer is hidden inside the hydrophobic cavity of a water-soluble organometallic cage. The metallacage not only protects the photosensitizer from light, it also facilitates its delivery to cancer cells.
