Abstract
Recently, we reported a new cascade ring-opening/closing metathesis polymerization of monomers containing two cyclopentene moieties. Several Ru catalysts were tested, but the best polymerization results were unexpectedly obtained using the first-generation Grubbs catalyst (G1). This was puzzling since the second- and third-generation Grubbs catalysts are well-known for their higher activities compared to G1. In order to explain the unique and superior activity of G1, we conducted a series of kinetics experiments for the polymerization of 3,3'-oxydicyclopent-1-ene, a representative monomer of this cascade polymerization, as well as the competition polymerization with cycloheptene using the various Grubbs catalysts. Based on our results, we propose a model in which the differences in the steric hindrance between the different ligands and the monomer determine the selectivity of the catalyst approach to the monomer and, therefore, the extent to which the productive pathway leads to successful cascade polymerization. In short, G1 with the smaller ligand showed a high preference for the productive pathway.

Abstract
Functionalized cyclooctenes (FCOEs) are important monomers in ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Herein, a new library of disubstituted FCOEs bearing adjacent heteroatoms were synthesized and applied in ROMP. To address the issues associated with the handling of the reactive thienyl chloride intermediate, a two-step continuous flow method has been developed to prepare 5-thio-6-chlorocyclooctene compounds from abundant cyclooctadiene starting materials. These newly synthesized FCOE monomers were subsequently polymerized through ROMP, giving rise to a range of functionalized polymers with high molecular weights. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the thermal properties of these polymers could be fine-tuned by changing the functional groups in the FCOE monomers. We expect that this functionalization-polymerization strategy will enable the preparation of a range of polymeric materials with complex structures.

Abstract
The synthesis of a range of alkyl esters (methyl, n-butyl, and n-decyl) prepared via Steglich esterification of the thermodynamically controlled exo, exo Diels-Alder adduct of furfuryl alcohol and maleic anhydride is reported. Subsequent ring-opening metathesis polymerization of these bio-derivable tricyclic oxanorbornene analogs delivers polymers with targeted molar mass and low molar mass dispersity. The polymerizations are rapid with complete monomer conversion achieved within 15 min. Significantly, the presence of the cyclic lactone at the bridgehead of these monomers leads to polymers with high regioregularity (>85% head-to-tail) and high stereoregularity (>75% trans). The resultant polymers display both high thermal stability and high glass transition temperatures. This new class of oxanorbornene monomer, accessed from bio-derivable furfuryl alcohol and maleic anhydride, may be further tailored to incorporate a range of functional moieties. Furthermore, the exceptional properties of the derived polymers indicate potential in a range of applications.

Abstract
The synthesis and ring-opening metathesis polymerization of highly-strained 3- and 1-butyl-trans-cyclooctenes was investigated with the goal of quickly preparing regioregular polymers with narrow molar mass distributions, which could serve as precursors for high precision short-chain branched polyethylene. 3-butyl-trans-cyclooctene was unable to be polymerized in a regioregular manner, however 1-butyl-trans-cyclooctene did yield regioregular product, although the dispersities were higher than expected. Investigation by NMR provided evidence that the nature of the propagating alkylidene is likely non-uniform throughout the course of the reaction, leading to the broadened molar mass distribution.

Abstract
Ring-opening metathesis polymerization of 4-phenylcyclopentene is investigated for the first time under various conditions. Thermodynamic analysis reveals a polymerization enthalpy and entropy sufficient for high molar mass and conversions at lower temperatures. In one example, neat polymerization using Hoveyda-Grubbs second generation catalyst at -15 °C yields 81% conversion to poly(4-phenylcyclopentene) (P4PCP) with a number average molar mass of 151 kg mol(-1) and dispersity of 1.77. Quantitative homogeneous hydrogenation of P4PCP results in a precision ethylene-styrene copolymer (H2 -P4PCP) with a phenyl branch at every fifth carbon along the backbone. This equates to a perfectly alternating trimethylene-styrene sequence with 71.2% w/w styrene content that is inaccessible through molecular catalyst copolymerization strategies. Differential scanning calorimetry confirms P4PCP and H2 -P4PCP are amorphous materials with similar glass transition temperatures (Tg ) of 17 ± 2 °C. Both materials present well-defined styrenic analogs for application in specialty materials or composites where lower softening temperatures may be desired.

Abstract
The microstructures of polymers produced by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with cyclometalated Ru-carbene metathesis catalysts were investigated. A strong bias for a cis, syndiotactic microstructure with minimal head-to-tail bias was observed. In instances where trans errors were introduced, it was determined that these regions were also syndiotactic. Furthermore, hypothetical reaction intermediates and transition structures were analyzed computationally. Combined experimental and computational data support a reaction mechanism in which cis,syndio-selectivity is a result of stereogenic metal control, while microstructural errors are predominantly due to alkylidene isomerization via rotation about the Ru═C double bond.

Abstract
A new and general strategy for the synthesis of sequence-defined polymers is described that employs relay metathesis to promote the ring opening polymerization of unstrained macrocyclic structures. Central to this approach is the development of a small molecule "polymerization trigger" which when coupled with a diverse range of sequence-defined units allows for the controlled, directional synthesis of sequence controlled polymers.

Abstract
The first example of ruthenium-mediated ring-opening metathesis polymerization generating highly cis, highly tactic polymers is reported. While the cis content varied from 62 to >95% depending on the monomer structure, many of the polymers synthesized displayed high tacticity (>95%). Polymerization of an enantiomerically pure 2,3-dicarboalkoxynorbornadiene revealed a syndiotactic microstructure.

Abstract
AB diblock copolymers were prepared by sequential ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctenes catalyzed by a Ru-based Grubbs catalyst. The relatively slow polymerization of cis-3-phenylcyclooct-1-ene (3PC) or cis-cyclooct-2-en-1-yl acetate (3AC) was first carried out and then followed by the faster polymerization of unsubstituted cis-cyclooctene (COE) from the active Ru-alkylidene chain ends. In contrast, simultaneous polymerization of the two monomers provides copolymers with a statistical monomer distribution owing to extensive chain transfer. The resulting poly(3PC-b-COE) and poly(3AC-b-COE) diblock copolymers were subjected to hydrogenation to selectively saturate the backbone alkenes. The consequences of architectural variance between the materials from simultaneous vs. sequential polymerizations are reflected by the contrasting thermal characteristics.

Abstract
A variety of multisubstituted cyclooctenes were prepared and employed as monomers for ring-opening metathesis polymerization using the Grubbs second or third generation catalysts. The resulting polymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. Monomers possessing a substituent at the 3-position afforded highly regio- and stereoregular polyalkenamers, from which the corresponding sequence-specific vinyl quaterpolymers were obtained upon hydrogenation. Simultaneous control of tacticity was also demonstrated by employing monomers with defined stereochemistry.
