Discrete complexes immobilized onto click-SBA-15 silica: controllable loadings and the impact of surface coverage on catalysis

Electrochemically assisted generation of highly ordered azide-functionalized mesoporous silica for oriented hybrid films

One key challenge in inorganic mesoporous films is the development of oriented mesostructures with vertical channels, and even more challenging is their functionalization while maintaining accessible the selected surface groups. Combining the electrochemically assisted deposition of ordered and oriented azide-functionalized mesoporous silica with alkyne-azide click chemistry enables such nanostructured and vertically aligned hybrid films to be obtained with significant amounts of active organic functional groups, as illustrated for ferrocene and pyridine functions. A good level of mesostructural order was obtained, namely up to 40% of organosilane in the starting sol. The method could be applied to a wide variety of functional groups, thus offering numerous new opportunities for applications in various fields.

Synthetic approach towards ‘click’ modified chalcone based organotriethoxysilanes; UV-Vis study

The efficient linkage of a conjugate chalcone to n-propyltriethoxysilanes via a 1,2,3-triazole is reported. The synthesis involves a Claisen–Schmidt condensation followed by a copper(i) catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction.

Functionalized large pore mesoporous silica nanoparticles for gene delivery featuring controlled release and co-delivery

Novel mesoporous silica nanoparticles (LPMSNs) functionalised with degradable poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate) (PDMAEA) have been developed (PDMAEA-LPMSNs) as nano-carriers for gene delivery. The unique design of PDMAEA-LPMSNs has endowed this system with multiple functions derived from both the organic and inorganic moieties. The cationic polymer unit binds to genetic molecules and undergoes a self-catalyzed hydrolysis in water to form a non-toxic anionic polymer poly(acrylic acid), allowing controlled release of siRNA in the cells. The nanopores of the LPMSNs provide a reservoir for storage and release of chloroquine to facilitate endosomal escape. The PDMAEA-LPMSN composites were characterized by elemental analysis (EA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state ¹³C magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nitrogen sorption techniques. Their siRNA delivery performance was tested in a KHOS cell line, showing promising potential for co-delivery of genes and drugs.

Solid-phase polarization matrixes for dynamic nuclear polarization from homogeneously distributed radicals in mesostructured hybrid silica materials

Mesoporous hybrid silica-organic materials containing homogeneously distributed stable mono- or dinitroxide radicals covalently bound to the silica surface were developed as polarization matrixes for solid-state dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR experiments. For TEMPO-containing materials impregnated with water or 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, enhancement factors of up to 36 were obtained at ∼100 K and 9.4 T without the need for a glass-forming additive. We show that the homogeneous radical distribution and the subtle balance between the concentration of radical in the material and the fraction of radicals at a sufficient inter-radical distance to promote the cross-effect are the main determinants for the DNP enhancements we obtain. The material, as well as an analogue containing the poorly soluble biradical bTUrea, is used as a polarizing matrix for DNP NMR experiments of solutions containing alanine and pyruvic acid. The analyte is separated from the polarization matrix by simple filtration.

Tuning silica particle shape at fluid interfaces

By exploring the phenomenon of water diffusion induced self-assembly of silica particle in microfluidic channels, we show that both the geometric confinement experienced by the droplet and the local Peclet number are responsible for the final particle shape. This study will facilitate the understanding and ultimately control of self assembly at fluid interfaces.

Dynamics of Functionalized Surface Molecular Monolayers Studied with Ultrafast Infrared Vibrational Spectroscopy

The structural dynamics of thin films consisting of tricarbonyl (1,10-phenanthroline)rhenium chloride (RePhen(CO)(3)Cl) linked to an alkyl silane monolayer through a triazole linker synthesized on silica-on-calcium-fluoride substrates are investigated using ultrafast infrared (IR) techniques. Ultrafast 2D IR vibrational echo experiments and polarization selective heterodyne detected transient grating (HDTG) measurements, as well as polarization dependent FT-IR and AFM experiments are employed to study the samples. The vibrational echo experiments measure spectral diffusion, while the HDTG experiments measure the vibrational excited state population relaxation and investigate the vibrational transition dipole orientational anisotropy decay. To investigate the anticipated impact of vibrational excitation transfer, which can be caused by the high concentration of RePhen(CO)(3)Cl in the monolayer, a concentration dependence of the spectral diffusion is measured. To generate a range of concentrations, mixed monolayers consisting of both hydrogen terminated and triazole/RePhen(CO)(3)Cl terminated alkyl silanes are synthesized. It is found that the measured rate of spectral diffusion is independent of concentration, with all samples showing spectral diffusion of 37 ± 6 ps. To definitively test for vibrational excitation transfer, polarization selective HDTG experiments are conducted. Excitation transfer will cause anisotropy decay. Polarization resolved heterodyne detected transient grating spectroscopy is sensitive to anisotropy decay (depolarization) caused by excitation transfer and molecular reorientation. The HDTG experiments show no evidence of anisotropy decay on the appropriate time scale, demonstrating the absence of excitation transfer the RePhen(CO)(3)Cl. Therefore the influence of excitation transfer on spectral diffusion is inconsequential in these samples, and the vibrational echo measurements of spectral diffusion report solely on structural dynamics. A small amount of very fast (~2 ps time scale) anisotropy decay is observed. The decay is concentration independent, and is assigned to wobbling-in-a-cone orientational motions of the RePhen(CO)(3)Cl. Theoretical calculations reported previously for experiments on a single concentration of the same type of sample suggested the presence of some vibrational excitation transfer and excitation transfer induced spectral diffusion. Possible reasons for the experimentally observed lack of excitation transfer in these high concentration samples are discussed.

Grafting control of mainstay terpyridine self-assembled monolayers for the preparation of planar silicon surfaces with variable catalytic loadings

Monolayers of terpyridine-derivatized silanes were self-assembled, with accurately controlled grafting densities, on single-crystal silicon surfaces. Complexation of the resulting terpyridine monolayers with Pd(OAc)(2) afforded a series of catalytic surfaces covering a full range of Pd loadings (0.14-0.85 nmol.cm(-2)) in the aim to explore their impact on catalysis methodically. X-ray reflectivity (XRR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were combined to afford a precise picture of the grafting density, chemical composition, and catalyst loadings of the surfaces investigated here. We report that the control of the terpyridine density and thus the control of catalytic loadings can be achieved through a fine modification of silanization concentrations, which affords surfaces with tunable catalytic activity.
