Abstract
Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) has become an attractive strategy for the activation of hydrocarbon feedstocks. Alcohols, as inexpensive and efficient hydrogen transfer reagents, have limited application in C-H functionalization due to the difficulty in the alkoxy radical acquisition. 9-Fluorenone moieties were incorporated into the metal-organic framework (MOF) as a photocatalyst; through the formation of hydrogen bonds between the carbonyl group of a ligand and alcohol, alkoxy radicals could be obtained by the visible-light-driven oxidation of 2,2,2-trichloroethanol via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). Effectively photocatalyzed intermolecular coupling reactions between phenyl vinyl sulfone and aldehyde or cyclic ether were realized through the HAT pathway. Compared to homogeneous catalysts, the heterogeneous MOF photocatalyst improved the catalytic efficiency and could be recycled at least five times. The microenvironment of the Zn-OFDC channel was beneficial for the formation of hydrogen bonds and stability of alkoxy radicals.

Abstract
Herein, we report an acid-controlled highly tunable selectivity of Rh(III)-catalyzed [4 + 2] and [3 + 3] annulations of N-carboxamide indoles with iodonium ylides lead to form synthetically important tricyclic and tetracyclic N-heterocycles. Here, iodonium ylide serves as a carbene precursor. The protocol proceeds under operationally simple conditions and provides novel tricyclic and tetracyclic scaffolds such as 3,4-dihydroindolo[1,2-c]quinazoline-1,6(2H,5H)-dione and 1H-[1,3]oxazino[3,4-a]indol-1-one derivatives with a broad range of functional group tolerance and moderate to excellent yields. Furthermore, the protocol synthetic utility was extended for various chemical transformations and was easily scaled up to a large-scale level.

Abstract
AbstractAryl rings are ubiquitous in the core of numerous natural product and industrially important molecules and thus their facile synthesis is of major interest in the scientific community and industry. Although multiple strategies enable access to these skeletons, metal-catalyzed C–H activation is promising due to its remarkable efficiency. Commercially available organoboron reagents, a prominent arylating partner in the cross-coupling domain, have also been utilized for direct arylation. Organoborons are bench-stable, inexpensive, and readily available coupling partners that promise regioselectivity, chemodivergence, cost-efficiency, and atom-economy without requiring harsh and forcing conditions. Abstract
Epoxides as alkylating reagents are unprecedentedly applied in Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H alkylation and oxidative annulation of substituted benzamides to synthesize isoquinolones rather than isochromans, which is accomplished through alerting the previously reported reaction mechanism by the addition of oxidant and TEA. Under these conditions, various isoquinolones have been prepared with yields up to 92%. In addition, this methodology has been successfully employed in the total syntheses of rupreschstyril, siamine, and cassiarin A in an expedient fashion.

Abstract
Axially chiral atropisomeric compounds are widely applied in asymmetric catalysis and medicinal chemistry, and efficient methods for their synthesis are in high demand. This applies in particular to atropisomers derived from five-membered aromatic rings because their lower barrier for rotation among the biaryl axis limits their asymmetric synthesis. We report here an enantioselective C-H functionalization method using our chiral RhJasCp complex for the synthesis of the biaryl atropisomer types that can be accessed from three different five-membered-ring heterocycles.

Abstract
Activation of C-H bonds assisted by a directing group is indispensable in organic synthesis. Among them, utilizing oxidative directing groups that can serve as an internal oxidant to drive the Mn/Mn+2 catalytic cycle has recently become a promising strategy. A survey of published reactions involving N-alkoxyamides or N-acyloxyamides reveals that not all N-O bonds act as an internal oxidant. We have therefore systematically investigated the effect of the oxidative groups on a model reaction catalyzed by Ru(II), Rh(III), and Pd(II) complexes. DFT calculations show that N-methoxy and N-acyloxy groups oxidize Ru(II) to Ru(IV) and Rh(III) to Rh(V), but cannot oxidize a cyclo-Pd(II) intermediate to Pd(IV). The stability of the metal imido intermediate 7-M (M = Ru, Rh, and Pd) controls whether the oxidation occurs or not. N-Acyloxy groups show a more pronounced selectivity than N-methoxy to oxidize Ru(II) and Rh(III) species, while no distinctive effect is observed for Pd(II).

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is a fundamentally important transformation in modern organic synthesis. The development of new reaction modes for new chemical accessibility and higher synthetic efficiency is still the consistent pursuance in this field. An efficient Suzuki-Miyaura coupling enabled by a controllable 1,4-palladium migration was realized to afford stereodefined multisubstituted olefins and 1,3-dienes. The reaction exhibits remarkable broad substrate scope, excellent functional-group tolerance, versatile conversion with obtained products, and easy scalability. The practicality of this method is highlighted by the aggregation-induced emission feature of the produced olefins and 1,3-dienes, as well as the capability of affording geometric isomer pairs with a marked difference on photoluminescent quantum yield values.

Abstract
Ruthenium(ii)-catalyzed oxidative coupling by C2-alkenylation of N-acyl pyrroles with alkenes has been described. The acyl unit was found to be an effective chelating group for the activation of aryl C-H bonds ortho to the directing group. The alkenylation reaction of benzoyl pyrroles occurred regioselectively at the C2-position of the pyrrole ring, without touching the benzene ring. The reaction provides exclusively monosubstituted pyrroles under the optimized conditions. Disubstituted pyrroles could be obtained using higher loadings of the ruthenium(ii)-catalyst and the additives.

Abstract
Functionalization of the β-C–H of aliphatic acids is emerging as a valuable synthetic disconnection that complements a wide range of conjugate addition reactions1–5. Despite efforts on β-C–H functionalizations for carbon-carbon (C-C) and carbon-heteroatom (C-Y) bond-forming reactions, these bear numerous decisive limitations, especially for industrial-scale applications, including the lack of mono-selectivity, use of expensive oxidants, and limited scope6–13. Notably, the majority of these reactions are incompatible with free aliphatic acids without exogenous directing groups. Considering the challenge of developing C–H activation reactions, it is not surprising that achieving different transformations requires independent catalyst design and directing group optimizations in each case. Here, we report a Pd-catalyzed β-C(sp3)–H lactonization of aliphatic acids enabled by a mono-N-protected β-amino acid ligand. The highly strained and reactive β-lactone products are versatile linchpins for the mono-selective installation of diverse alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkynyl, fluoro, hydroxyl, and amino groups at the β position of the parent acid, thus providing a route to myriad carboxylic acids. The use of inexpensive tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP) as the oxidant to promote the desired selective reductive elimination from the Pd(IV) center, as well as the ease of product purification without column chromatography renders this reaction amenable to ton-scale manufacturing.

Abstract
Streptide (1) is a peptide-derived macrocyclic natural product that has attracted considerable attention since its discovery in 2015. It contains an unprecedented post-translational modification that intramolecularly links the β-carbon (C3) of a residue 2 lysine with the C7 of a residue 6 tryptophan, thereby forming a 20-membered cyclic peptide. Herein, we report the first total synthesis of streptide that confirms the regiochemistry of the lysine-tryptophan cross-link and provides an unambiguous assignment of the stereochemistry (3R vs 3S) of the lysine-2 C3 center. Both the 3R and the originally assigned 3S lysine diastereomers were independently prepared by total synthesis, and it is the former, not the latter, that was found to correlate with the natural product. The approach enlists a powerful Pd(0)-mediated indole annulation for the key macrocyclization of the complex core peptide, utilizes an underdeveloped class of hypervalent iodine(III) aryl substrates in a palladium-catalyzed C-H activation/β-arylation reaction conducted on a lysine derivative, and provides access to material with which the role of streptide and related natural products may be examined.

Abstract
1-Aminopyridinium ylides are efficient directing groups for palladium-catalyzed β-arylation and alkylation of sp3 C-H bonds in carboxylic acid derivatives. The efficiency of these directing groups depends on the substitution at the pyridine moiety. The unsubstituted pyridine-derived ylides allow functionalization of primary C-H bonds, while methylene groups are unreactive in the absence of external ligands. 4-Pyrrolidinopyridine-containing ylides are capable of C-H functionalization in acyclic methylene groups in the absence of external ligands, thus rivaling the efficiency of the aminoquinoline directing group. Preliminary mechanistic studies have been performed. A cyclopalladated intermediate has been isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography, and its reactivity was studied.

Abstract
A novel cobalt-catalyzed C-H alkylation of arenes and olefins is achieved with (pyridin-2-yl)isopropyl amine as an N, N-bidentate directing group. Different linear, branched, and cyclic alkyl ethers were used as practical secondary alkylating reagents through cleavage of C(sp3)-O bond, providing an efficient approach to the synthesis of verstile o-alkylated arylamides and tetrasubstituted acrylamides. Mechanistic studies indicate that cleavage of the inert C(sp3)-O bond involves a cobalt-promoted radical process and that cleavage of the inert C(sp2)-H bond by a cobalt catalyst is a rate-limiting step.

Abstract
A selective O-cyclization of N-methoxy aryl amides with CH2Br2 or 1,2-DCE (1,2-dichloroethane) via palladium-catalyzed C-H activation has been described. New C(sp3)-O and C(sp2)-C(sp3) bonds are forged simultaneously with the assistance of an N-methoxy amide group, and good functional group tolerance in substrates is observed. Preliminary mechanistic investigations show that the process may involve a five-membered palladacycle intermediate.

Abstract
Direct functionalization of natural products is important for studying the structure-activity and structure-property relationships of these molecules. Recent advances in the transition-metal-catalyzed functionalization of C(sp3 )-H bonds, the most abundant yet inert bonds in natural products, have allowed natural product derivatives to be created selectively. Strategies to achieve such transformation are reviewed.

Abstract
Here we report an aerobic Pd(0) catalyzed C2-H functionalization of indoles and pyrroles with tethered N-methoxylamide as the directing group. A Pd(0)-initiated mechanism overcomes the directing or poisoning effect from a wide range of heterocycles including pyridine, pyrimidine, and thiazole. The imidazo[1,5-a]indole products are transformed to bioactive analogs after one-step manipulations, demonstrating the potential utility of this reaction in drug discovery.

Abstract
The functionalization of C(sp3 )-H bonds streamlines chemical synthesis by allowing the use of simple molecules and providing novel synthetic disconnections. Intensive recent efforts in the development of new reactions based on C-H functionalization have led to its wider adoption across a range of research areas. This Review discusses the strengths and weaknesses of three main approaches: transition-metal-catalyzed C-H activation, 1,n-hydrogen atom transfer, and transition-metal-catalyzed carbene/nitrene transfer, for the directed functionalization of unactivated C(sp3 )-H bonds. For each strategy, the scope, the reactivity of different C-H bonds, the position of the reacting C-H bonds relative to the directing group, and stereochemical outcomes are illustrated with examples in the literature. The aim of this Review is to provide guidance for the use of C-H functionalization reactions and inspire future research in this area.
