Separation of pyrrolidine from tetrahydrofuran by using pillar[6]arene-based nonporous adaptive crystals

Pyrrolidine, an important feedstock in the chemical industry, is commonly produced via vapor-phase catalytic ammoniation of tetrahydrofuran (THF). Obtaining pyrrolidine with high purity and low energy cost has extremely high economic and environmental values. Here we offer a rapid and energy-saving method for adsorptive separation of pyrrolidine and THF by using nonporous adaptive crystals of per-ethyl pillar[6]arene (EtP6). EtP6 crystals show a superior preference towards pyrrolidine in 50 : 50 (v/v) pyrrolidine/THF mixture vapor, resulting in rapid separation. The purity of pyrrolidine reaches 95% in 15 min of separation, and after 2 h, the purity is found to be 99.9%. Single-crystal structures demonstrate that the selectivity is based on the stability difference of host-guest structures after uptake of THF or pyrrolidine and non-covalent interactions in the crystals. Besides, EtP6 crystals can be recycled efficiently after the separation process owing to reversible transformations between the guest-free and guest-loaded EtP6.

Tetraphenylethylene-embedded [15]paracyclophanes: AIEgen and macrocycle merged novel supramolecular hosts used for sensing Ni2+ ions

Transformation of [1₅]paracyclophanes ([15]PCP) into fluorophores has been achieved by embedding tetraphenylethene (TPE) units into their skeletons at the meso-positions. The obtained two hosts demonstrated distinct aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and their fluorescence could be selectively quenched by Ni²⁺ ions.

Pyromellitic Diimide-Extended Pillar[6]arene: Synthesis, Structure, and Its Complexation with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

A novel pyromellitic diimide-extended pillar[6]arene was synthesized in two steps with moderate yield for the first time. It showed a symmetrical stretched hexagon structure and could form 1:2 complexes with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in solution. Interestingly, a linear supramolecular array between complex 1@G4₂ and pyrene through π···π stacking interactions was also observed in the solid state.

Chiral Conjugated Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Polymers for Highly Efficient Circularly Polarized Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes

Two novel chiral conjugated polymers R-P and S-P designed and synthesized from a pair of circularly polarized thermally activated delayed fluorescence (CP-TADF) enantiomers are presented in this work. The two polymers exhibited excellent TADF properties with small singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔE_ST) of 0.045 and 0.061 eV and relatively high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 72 and 76%, respectively. Besides, intense mirror-image circularly polarized luminescence signals were detected from R-P and S-P in both solution and film states with dissymmetry factors (|g_lum|) of up to 1.9 × 10^-3. Furthermore, solution-processed circularly polarized polymer light-emitting diodes (CP-PLEDs) fabricated with R-P and S-P achieved high maximum external quantum efficiencies of 14.9 and 15.8% and high maximum brightness (L_max) of 8940 and 12,180 cd/m² with yellowish-green emission peaks at 546 and 544 nm, respectively. Moreover, intense circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (g_EL) of -1.5 × 10^-3 and +1.6 × 10^-3 were detected from the CP-PLED devices fabricated with R-P and S-P, respectively.

A novel thermally activated delayed fluorescence macrocycle

A novel luminescent macrocycle was conveniently synthesized, which exhibited flexible conformations and excellent thermally activated delayed fluorescence properties.

CPL on/off control of an assembled system by water soluble macrocyclic chiral sources with planar chirality

Herein, we report the synthesis and planar chiral properties of a pair of water-soluble cationic pillar[5]arenes with stereogenic carbons. Interestingly, although units of the molecules were rotatable, only one planar chiral diastereomer existed in water in both cases. As a new type of chiral source, these molecules transmitted chiral information from the planar chiral cavities to the assembly of a water-soluble extended π-conjugated compound, affording circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The chirality transfer process and resulting CPL were extremely sensitive to the feed ratio of the chiral pillar[5]arenes owing to the combined action of their planar chirality, bulkiness, and strong binding properties. When a limited amount of chiral source was added, further assembly of the extended π-conjugated compound into helical fibers with CPL was triggered. Unexpectedly, larger amounts of chiral source destroyed the helical fiber assemblies, resulting in elimination of the chirality and CPL properties from the assembled structures.

Readily obtained pillar[5]arenes with pure planar chirality enabled CPL on/off control of an assembled system by varying the feed ratio.

Symmetrically Tetra-functionalized Pillar[6]arenes Prepared by Fragment Coupling

Due to the highly symmetrical structures generated from one-pot syntheses, the partial functionalization of macrocycles is usually beset with low yields and onerous purifications of the target multifunctional macrocycles. To improve this circumstance, taking pillar[6]arenes as an example, a two-step fragment coupling method is developed for synthesizing symmetrically tetra-functionalized pillar[6]arenes, namely X-pillar[6]arenes. This method is simple and versatile, which makes hetero-fragment coupling and pre-functionalization available. Nine new macrocycles and a pillar[6]arene-based cage are prepared. In addition, one of the newly synthesized macrocycles, COOEtEtXP[6] , exhibits a strong cyan luminescence in the solid state under irradiation by 365 nm UV light. This emission originates from intramolecular through-space conjugation. Meanwhile, formation of a supramolecular polymer by multiple non-covalent intra/intermolecular interactions help rigidify the structure and make COOEtEtXP[6] an efficient solid-state emitter. It is believed that this fragment coupling can also be used to realize the multi-functionalization of other macrocycles.

Breathing Room: Restoring Free Rotation in a Schiff-Base Macrocycle through Endoperoxide Formation

Macrocyclization is a popular method for preparing hosts, but it can have unintended effects, like limiting molecular free rotation to yield mixtures of inseparable isomers. We report a [3 + 3] Schiff-base macrocycle (1) with anthracene bridges. Restricted rotation about the phenyl-anthracene bonds leads 1 to exist as a mixture of conformations (1^C_s and 1^C_3v). Macrocycle 1 was photooxidized to tris(endoperoxide) adduct 4, alleviating restricted rotation. These results were supported by spectroscopic, structural, and computational analyses.

Bottom-Up Solid-State Molecular Assembly via Guest-Induced Intermolecular Interactions

The manipulation of molecular motions to construct highly ordered supramolecular architectures from chaos in the solid state is considered to be far more complex and challenging in comparison to that in solution. In this work, a bottom-up molecular assembly approach based on a newly designed skeleton-trimmed pillar[5]arene analogue, namely the permethylated leggero pillar[5]arene MeP[5]L, is developed in the solid state. An amorphous powder of MeP[5]L can take up certain guest vapors to form various ordered linker-containing solid-state molecular assemblies, which can be further used to construct a thermodynamically favored linker-free superstructure upon heating. These approaches are driven by vapor-induced solid-state molecular motions followed by a thermally triggered phase-to-phase transformation. The intermolecular interactions play a crucial role in controlling the molecular arrangements in the resulting assemblies. This research will open new insights into exploring controllable molecular motions and assemblies in the solid state, providing new perspectives in supramolecular chemistry and materials.

Adsorptive separation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone by nonporous adaptive crystals of RhombicArene

As feedstock chemicals with similar boiling points, cyclohexanol (CHOL) and cyclohexanone (CHON) are often obtained as mixtures during production processes. Separation of mixed CHOL and CHON is important but energy-consuming by distillation. Here we report the development of a new macrocycle RhombicArene, which forms a host-guest complex with CHON through C-H⋯π interactions and hydrogen bonds. The nonporous adaptive crystals of RhombicArene exhibit excellent capability for rapid (30 minutes), exclusive (>99.9%), and recyclable vapor adsorption of CHON in the presence of CHOL under mild and user-friendly conditions.

Helic[6]arene-Based Chiral Pseudo[1]rotaxanes and [1]Rotaxanes

Chiral pseudo[1]rotaxanes and [1]rotaxanes constructed from macrocyclic arenes still remain a big challenge mainly owing to the lack of such chiral macrocycles. In this work, a new system of chiral pseudo[1]rotaxanes formed by self-inclusion of helic[6]arene containing amide linked with the terminal tertiary amines was first discovered. Based on an atom-economic stopping strategy, a pair of chiral [1]rotaxanes were conveniently obtained in almost quantitative yields by blocking the pseudo[1]rotaxanes with monobenzyl bromide of tetraphenylethene. The structures of pseudo[1]rotaxanes and [1]rotaxanes were characterized by 2D NMR spectra in solution, combined with DFT calculations. The photophysical properties further revealed the efficient chirality transfer of helic[6]arene to the tetraphenylethene moiety, compared to their unthreaded chiral isomers. The discovery of the chiral pseudo[1]rotaxanes allows for a wide and available synthesis of chiral [1]rotaxanes, and also opening a new avenue to the design of chiral supramolecular materials.

Macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks: the state of the art and progress

Macrocyclic host molecules play the central role in host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. The highly structural symmetry of macrocyclic host molecules can meet people's pursuit of aesthetics in molecular design, and generally means a balance of design, synthesis, properties and applications. For macrocyclic host molecules with highly symmetrical structures, building blocks, which could be described as repeat units as well, are the most fundamental elements for molecular design. The structural features and recognition ability of macrocyclic host molecules are determined by the building blocks and their connection patterns. Using different building blocks, different macrocyclic host molecules could be designed and synthesized. With decades of developments of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry, diverse macrocyclic host molecules with different building blocks have been designed and synthesized. Aromatic building blocks are a big family among the various building blocks used in constructing macrocyclic host molecules. In this feature article, the recent developments of macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks were summarized and discussed.

Xanthene[n]arenes: Exceptionally Large, Bowl-Shaped Macrocyclic Building Blocks Suitable for Self-Assembly

A new class of macrocycles denoted as "xanthene[n]arenes" was synthesized. In contrast to most other macrocycles, they feature a conformationally restricted bowl shape due to the attached alkyl groups at the linking methylene units. This facilitates the synthesis of cavitands and the self-assembly to molecular capsules via noncovalent interactions. The derivatization potential of the novel macrocycles was demonstrated on the xanthene[3]arene scaffold. Besides a deep cavitand and an oxygen-embedded zigzag hydrocarbon belt[12]arene, a modified macrocycle was synthesized that self-assembles into a hydrogen-bonded tetrameric capsule, demonstrating the potential of xanthene[n]arenes as a new set of macrocyclic building blocks.

per-Hydroxylated Prism[n]arenes: Supramolecularly Assisted Demethylation of Methoxy-Prism[5]arene

Methoxy-prism[5]arene PrS[5]^Me is demethylated by a supramolecularly assisted reaction. In the presence of a tetramethylammonium cation, PrS[5]^Me is demethylated by BBr₃ in high yield, while in its absence a 55/40 mixture of PrS[5]^OH/PrS[6]^OH is formed. The dealkylation of prismarenes, such as PrS[6]^R (R = Et, nPr) and c-PrS[5]^Me, can be easily obtained in high yields in the presence of BBr₃.

Supramolecular tessellations by the exo-wall interactions of pagoda[4]arene

Supramolecular tessellation has gained increasing interest in supramolecular chemistry for its structural aesthetics and potential applications in optics, magnetics and catalysis. In this work, a new kind of supramolecular tessellations (STs) have been fabricated by the exo-wall interactions of pagoda[4]arene (P4). ST with rhombic tiling pattern was first constructed by P4 itself through favorable π···π interactions between anthracene units of adjacent P4. Notably, various highly ordered STs with different tiling patterns have been fabricated based on exo-wall charge transfer interactions between electron-rich P4 and electron-deficient guests including 1,4-dinitrobenzene, terephthalonitrile and tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile. Interestingly, solvent modulation and guest selection played a crucial role in controlling the molecular arrangements in the co-crystal superstructures. This work not only proves that P4 is an excellent macrocyclic building block for the fabrication of various STs, but also provides a new perspective and opportunity for the design and construction of supramolecular two-dimensional organic materials.

Supramolecular tessellation has gained increasing interest in supramolecular chemistry for its structural aesthetics and potential applications in optics, magnetics and catalysis. Here, the authors expand the examples of molecular building blocks for supramolecular tessellation and fabricate supramolecular tessellations using the exo-wall interactions of pagoda[4]arene.

Efficient Persistent Luminescence Tuning Using a Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complex as Efficient Light Conversion Materials

Developing an appropriate method to broaden the color of long persistent luminescence materials has important scientific significance and practical value but remains a great challenge. Herein, we have developed a unique strategy to fine-tune the persistent luminescence using the inclusion complex of rhodamine 6G with (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin as efficient light conversion materials. The emitting color of the novel persistent luminescence material could be tuned from green to orange by changing the concentration of the light conversion agent. Furthermore, afterglow decay measurements showed that the initial afterglow brightness is 9.65 cd/m², and the initial afterglow brightness gradually decreased as the cyclodextrin inclusion compound coating increased. This design concept introduces a new perspective for broadening the luminescence color of afterglow phosphors, which may open up new opportunities for persistent luminescence materials toward many emerging applications.

Advances in Chirality Sensing with Macrocyclic Molecules

The construction of chemical sensors that can distinguish molecular chirality has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to the significance of chiral organic molecules and the importance of detecting their absolute configuration and chiroptical purity. The supramolecular chirality sensing strategy has shown promising potential due to its advantages of high throughput, sensitivity, and fast chirality detection. This review focuses on chirality sensors based on macrocyclic compounds. Macrocyclic chirality sensors usually have inherent complexing ability towards certain chiral guests, which combined with the signal output components, could offer many unique advantages/properties compared to traditional chiral sensors. Chirality sensing based on macrocyclic sensors has shown rapid progress in recent years. This review summarizes recent advances in chirality sensing based on both achiral and chiral macrocyclic compounds, especially newly emerged macrocyclic molecules.

Precise Synthesis of π-Conjugated Block Copolymers and Polymerization-Induced Chiral Self-Assembly toward Helical Nanofibers with Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Precise synthesis and efficient self-assembly of semiconducting polymers are of great interest. Herein, we report the controlled synthesis of π-conjugated poly(phenyl isocyanide)-b-poly(phenyleneethylene) (PPI-b-PPE) copolymers via chain extension of ethynyl 4-iodobenzene initiated by Pd(II)-terminated helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) (PPI). The in-situ-generated block copolymers self-assembled into various supramolecular architectures depending on the PPE length. The helical PPI segment induced the block copolymers with an appropriate PPE length self-assemble into helical nanofibers with a controlled size and defined helicity. Interestingly, the chiral assemblies of the block copolymers exhibit intense optical activity and emit clear circularly polarized luminescence.

Pillar[5]arene-Based Dual Chiral Organoboranes with Allowed Host-Guest Chemistry and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

We first describe two examples of highly luminescent organoboranes (NP5BN1 and NP5BN2) with dual chirality that were achieved by molecular functionalization of planar chiral pillar[5]arenes with naphthyls. Sufficiently strong steric effects are imposed by triarylamine (Ar₃N) and triarylborane (Ar₃B) moieties and further enhanced by the proximity of the chiral building blocks, leading to the isolation of multiple enantiomers via chiral high-performance liquid chromatography. The intramolecular charge transfer from N-donor to B-acceptor across both chiral subunits enabled the circularly polarized luminescence and thermally robust colorimetric responses in their emissions. Furthermore, their remarkable host-guest chemistry was allowed at no expense in the pursuit of advanced chiroptical properties using pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular scaffolds.

Pillararenes: fascinating planar chiral macrocyclic arenes

Chiral macrocycles possess significant value in chiral science and supramolecular chemistry. Pillararenes, as a class of relatively young supramolecular macrocyclic hosts, have been widely used for host-guest recognition and self-assembly. Since the position of substituents on the benzene rings breaks the molecular symmetry (symmetric plane and symmetric center), pillararenes possess planar chirality. However, it is a great challenge to synthesize stable and resolvable enantiomers because of the easy rotation of the phenylene group. In this review, we summarize the construction methods of resolvable chiral pillararenes. We also focus on their applications in enantioselective recognition, chiral switches, chirality sensing, asymmetric catalysis, circularly polarized luminescence, metal-organic frameworks, and highly permeable membranes. Finally, we discuss the future research perspectives in this field of pillararene-based planar chiral materials. We hope that this review will encourage more researchers to work in this exciting field.

Orthogonal Design of a Water-Soluble meso-Tetraphenylethene-Functionalized Pillar[5]arene with Aggregation-Induced Emission Property and Its Therapeutic Application

An orthogonal strategy was utilized for synthesizing a novel water-soluble pillar[5]arene (m-TPEWP5) with tetraphenylethene-functionalized on the bridged methylene group (meso-position) of the pillararene skeleton. The obtained macrocycle exhibit both the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect and interesting host-guest property. Moreover, it can be made to bind with a tailor-made camptothecin-based prodrug guest (DNS-G) to form AIE-nanoparticles based on host-guest interaction and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer process for fabricating a drug delivery system. This novel type of water-soluble AIE-active macrocycle can serve as a potential fluorescent material for cancer diagnosis and therapy. In addition, the present orthogonal strategy for designing meso-functionalized aromatic macrocycles may pave a new avenue for creating novel supramolecular structures and functional materials.

Saucer[n]arenes: Synthesis, Structure, Complexation, and Guest-Induced Circularly Polarized Luminescence Property

Macrocycles denoted as saucer[n]arenes (n=4,5) were easily synthesized by the one-pot condensation of 2,7-dimethoxynaphthalene (2,7-DMN) and paraformaldehyde in the presence of TFA or catalytic BF₃ ⋅OEt₂ . With 1,1-dimethylpiperidin-1-ium as the template, saucer[4]arene was selectively obtained. Crystal structures show that saucer[n]arenes are all composed of 2,7-DMN moiety bridged by the methylene groups at 1,6-positions: all of the 7-methoxy groups lie on one face, and all of the 2-methoxy groups lie on the other. Saucer[n]arenes exhibit strong fluorescence properties with the quantum yields of 19.6 % and 23.4 %. They form 1:1 complexes with ammonium salts in both solution and solid state (association constant up to 10⁵  M^-1 in CDCl₃ ). Chiral quaternary ammonium salts can induce the chirality of the dynamically racemic inherently chiral saucer[n]arenes in solution, and thus show mirror-imaged circular dichroism signals and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties.

An intramolecularly self-templated synthesis of macrocycles: self-filling effects on the formation of prismarenes

Ethyl- and propyl-prism[6]arenes are obtained in high yields and in short reaction times, independent of the nature and size of the solvent, in the cyclization of 2,6-dialkoxynaphthalene with paraformaldehyde. PrS[6]Et or PrS[6]nPr adopt, both in solution and in the solid state, a folded cuboid-shaped conformation, in which four inward oriented alkyl chains fill the cavity of the macrocycle. On these bases, we proposed that the cyclization of PrS[6]Et or PrS[6]nPr occurs through an intramolecular thermodynamic self-templating effect. In other words, the self-filling of the internal cavity of PrS[6]Et or PrS[6]nPr stabilizes their cuboid structure, driving the equilibrium toward their formation. Molecular recognition studies, both in solution and in the solid state, show that the introduction of guests into the macrocycle cavity forces the cuboid scaffold to open, through an induced-fit mechanism. An analogous conformational change from a closed to an open state occurs during the endo-cavity complexation process of the pentamer, PrS[5]. These results represent a rare example of a thermodynamically controlled cyclization process driven through an intramolecular self-template effect, which could be exploited in the synthesis of novel macrocycles.

Asymmetric Catalytic Approach to Multilayer 3D Chirality

The first asymmetric catalytic approach to multilayer 3D chirality has been achieved by using Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings. New chiral catalysts were designed and screened under various catalytic systems that proved chiral amide-phosphines to be more efficient ligands than other candidates. The multilayer 3D framework was unambiguously determined by X-ray structural analysis showing a parallel pattern of three layers consisting of top, middle and bottom aromatic rings. The X-ray structure of a catalyst complex, dichloride complex of Pd-phosphine amide, was obtained revealing an interesting asymmetric environment nearby the Pd metal center. Three rings of multilayer 3D products can be readily changed by varying aromatic ring-anchored starting materials. The resulting multilayer products displayed strong luminescence under UV irradiation and strong aggregation-induced emission (AIE). In the future, this work would benefit not only the field of asymmetric synthesis but also materials science, in particular polarized organic electronics, optoelectronics and photovoltaics.

Fluorescent Molecular Cages with Sucrose and Cyclotriveratrylene Units for the Selective Recognition of Choline and Acetylcholine

The synthesis of four fluorescent diastereoisomeric molecular cages containing cyclotriveratrylene and sucrose moieties connected via the naphthalene linkers is reported. These diastereoisomers were found to be selective and efficient receptors for acetylcholine and choline. Compound P-5a has a better affinity for choline over acetylcholine, while cage M-5a exhibits a higher association constant for acetylcholine over choline. The highest selectivity value was observed for compound M-5a (K_ACh/K_Ch = 3.1). Cages P-5a, P-5b, M-5a, and M-5b were fully characterized by the advanced NMR techniques, and ECD spectroscopy was supported by DFT calculations. The binding constants K_a of these receptors were determined by fluorescence titration experiments in acetonitrile.

Synthesis of Chiral Helic[1]triptycene[3]arenes and Their Enantioselective Recognition Towards Chiral Guests Containing Aminoindan Groups

Starting from the enantiopure precursors, a pair of chiral macrocyclic arenes named helic[1]triptycene[3]arenes were conveniently synthesized. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the enantiomeric macrocyclic arenes exhibited mirror images, and the X-ray single crystal structures confirmed their absolute conformations as well. Moreover, the macrocyclic arenes showed strong complexation with secondary ammonium and primary ammonium salts containing aminoindan groups. In particular, the chiral macrocyclic arenes exhibited enantioselective recognition ability towards the chiral secondary ammonium salts containing aminoindan groups with an enantioselective ratio up to 3.89.
