Abstract
Carbazole-based receptors functionalized with two sulfonamide groups have been synthesized and their properties as anion receptors have been evaluated. The receptor with bis(trifluoromethyl)aniline groups has shown a very high affinity for halide ions, especially remarkable as only two hydrogen bonds are formed in the complexes. (1)H NMR and fluorescence titrations have been carried out and binding constants up to 7.9 × 10(6) M(-1) have been reached. X-ray structures have been obtained and a modelling study has shown the possible reasons for the large affinity of these compounds for halide anions.

Abstract
A new anthracene labeled pyridinium amide-urea conjugate 1 has been designed and synthesized. The receptor shows a different fluorometric response with L-N-acetylvaline and L-N-acetylalanine salts in CH₃CN in contrast to the other salts of L-N-acetyl α-amino acids and (S)-α-hydroxy acids studied. Upon complexation of the tetrabutylammonium salt of L-N-acetylvaline, the emission of 1 increases accompanied by the formation of a new band at higher wavelength and this characteristic change distinguishes it from other anionic substrates studied. The binding interaction has been studied by ¹H NMR, fluorescence and UV titration experiments.

Abstract
The fundamental factors controlling anion selectivity in the crystallization of hydrogen-bonding capsules [Mg(H2O)6][X [symbol: see text] L2] (X = SO4(2-), 1a; SeO4(2-), 1b; SO3(2-), 1c; CO3(2-), 1d; L = tris[2-(3-pyridylurea)ethyl]-amine) from water have been investigated by solution and solid-state thermodynamic measurements, anion competition experiments, and X-ray structural analysis. The crystal structures of 1a-d are isomorphous, thereby simplifying the interpretation of the observed selectivities based on differences in anion coordination geometries. The solubilities of 1a-d in water follow the order: 1a < 1b < 1c < 1d, which is consistent with the selectivity for the tetrahedral sulfate and selenate anions observed in competitive crystallization experiments. Crystallization of the capsules is highly exothermic, with the most favorable DeltaH(cryst)(o) of -99.1 and -108.5 kJ/mol corresponding to SO4(2-) and SeO4(2-), respectively, in agreement with the X-ray structural data showing shape complementarity between these tetrahedral anions and the urea-lined cavities of the capsules. Sulfite, on the other hand, has a significantly less negative DeltaH(cryst)(o) of -64.6 kJ/mol, which may be attributed to its poor fit inside the capsules, involving repulsive interactions. The more favorable entropy of crystallization for this anion, however, partly offsets the enthalpic disadvantage, resulting in a solubility product very similar to that of the selenate complex. Because of their very similar shape and size, SO4(2-) and SeO4(2-) have a propensity to form solid solutions, which limits the selectivity between these two anions in competitive crystallizations. In the end, a comprehensive picture of contributing factors to anion selectivity in crystalline hydrogen-bonding capsules emerges.

Abstract
The interaction of a neutral squaramide-based receptor, equipped with two 4-nitrophenyl substituents (R(sq)), with halides and oxoanions has been studied in MeCN. UV/Vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopy titration experiments clearly indicated the formation of 1:1 hydrogen bonding [R(sq)X](+) complexes with all the investigated anions. X-ray diffraction studies on the chloride and bromide complex salts confirmed the 1:1 stoichiometry and indicated the establishment of bifurcated hydrogen-bond interactions between the squaramide-based receptor and the halide anion that involved both 1) amide N-H and 2) aryl proximate C-H fragments, for a total of four bonds. Probably due to the contribution of C-H fragments, complexes of R(sq) with halides are 1 to 2 orders of magnitude more stable than the corresponding ones with the analogous urea-based receptor that contains two 4-nitrophenyl substituents (R(ur)). In the case of oxoanions, R(sq) forms complexes, the stability of which decreases with the decreasing basicity of the anion (H(2)PO(4) (-)>NO(2) (-) approximately HSO(4) (-)>NO(3) (-)), and is comparable to that of complexes of the urea-based receptor R(ur). Such a behaviour is ascribed to the predominance of different contributions: electrostatic interaction for halides, acid-to-base 'frozen' proton transfer for oxoanions. Finally, with the strongly basic anions F(-) and CH(3)COO(-), R(sq) first gives genuine hydrogen-bond complexes of 1:1 stoichiometry; then, upon addition of a second anion equivalent, it undergoes deprotonation of one N--H fragment, with the simultaneous formation of the dianion hydrogen-bond complexes, [HF(2)](-) and [CH(3)COOHCH(3)COO](-), respectively. In the case of the urea-based derivative R(ur), deprotonation takes place with fluoride but not with acetate. The apparently higher Brønsted acidity of R(sq) with respect to R(ur) reflects the capability of the squaramide receptor to delocalise the negative charge formed on N--H deprotonation over the cyclobutene-1,2-dione ring and the entire molecular framework.
