Effect of light at different wavelengths on polyol synthesis of silver nanocubes

Despite the presence of light-sensitive species in the polyol synthesis of silver nanocubes, the influence of light on it has yet to be investigated. Herein, we demonstrated that light radiation, by generating plasmon-based hot electrons and subsequently increasing the reduction rate of Ag⁺ in the system, in addition to enhancing the growth rate of nanocubes, causes twinned seeds, which these seeds are then converted into nanorods and right bipyramids. With shorter, higher energy wavelengths, Ag⁺ reduction progresses more quickly, resulting in structures with more twin planes. The overlap of the excitation wavelength and the band gap of Ag₂S clusters formed in the early stages of synthesis accelerates the rate of reaction at low-energy excitation. According to our findings, the surfactant polyvinylpyrrolidone acts as a photochemical relay to drive the growth of silver nanoparticles. Overall, this work emphasizes the impact of excitation light on polyol synthesis as a technique for generating Ag nanocubes of various sizes.

Hot Electron-Driven Photocatalysis Using Sub-5 nm Gap Plasmonic Nanofinger Arrays

Semiconductor photocatalysis has received increasing attention because of its potential to address problems related to the energy crisis and environmental issues. However, conventional semiconductor photocatalysts, such as TiO₂ and ZnO, can only be activated by ultraviolet light due to their wide band gap. To extend the light absorption into the visible range, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) has been widely used. Noble metal NPs can couple incident visible light energy to strong LSPR, and the nonradiative decay of LSPR generates nonthermal hot carriers that can be injected into adjacent semiconductor material to enhance its photocatalytic activity. Here we demonstrate that nanoimprint-defined gap plasmonic nanofinger arrays can function as visible light-driven plasmonic photocatalysts. The sub-5 nm gaps between pairs of collapsed nanofingers can support ultra-strong plasmon resonance and thus boost the population of hot carriers. The semiconductor material is exactly placed at the hot spots, providing an efficient pathway for hot carrier injection from plasmonic metal to catalytic materials. This nanostructure thus exhibits high plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light. The hot carrier injection mechanism of this platform was systematically investigated. The plasmonic enhancement factor was calculated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and was consistent with the measured improvement of the photocatalytic activity. This platform, benefiting from the precise controllable geometry, provides a deeper understanding of the mechanism of plasmonic photocatalysis.

Confined growth of Ag nanoflakes induced by LSPR-driven carrier transfer in periodic nanopatterned arrays

The growth of metal nanostructures induced by surface plasmons has attracted widespread attention and provides a wide range of applications in the development of plasmonic nanochemistry, biosensors, photoelectrochemical coupling reactions, etc. Herein, a simple method is reported for the fabrication of Ag nanoflakes induced by the surface plasma on two-dimensional periodic nanopatterned arrays with the aid of 4-MBA molecules. The light radiation, molecules, and environmental gases are selected to track the formation mechanism of Ag nanoflakes. The in situ Raman observations and theoretical analyses confirm that small aromatic molecules with carboxyl groups play important roles in Ag nanoflake formation derived by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-driven carriers, which provide profound insights into the study of LSPR-driven carriers, participating in chemical reactions and the reconstruction of dense hot spots in nanogaps.

NIR-Driven Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production by Silane- and Tertiary Amine-Bound Plasmonic Gold Nanoprisms

Near-infrared (NIR) photon-driven H₂ production from water is regarded as one of the best routes for establishing a sustainable hydrogen-based energy economy. Here, we have developed a gold nanoprism-based photocatalytic assembly, rationally capped with an amine and a silane ligand pair, which exhibited an excellent H₂ production rate (146 μL mg^-1 h^-1) in neutral water while achieving an absolute incident photon-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 0.53%. An array of spectroscopic and microscopic experiments unravel that the amine ligand scavenges the hot hole while the silane aids the H₂ production via hydrolysis during the photocatalysis on the plasmon surface. This photocatalytic H₂ production reactivity can be retained for multiple cycles following the replenishment of amine and silane. Hence, this photocatalytic assembly can set up the template for a large-scale NIR-driven H₂ production unit.

Plasmonic Photocatalysis with Nonthermalized Hot Carriers

Hot carriers generated by plasmonic damping have been suggested to promote photocatalysis, yet it remains unclear how the nonthermalized hot carriers dynamically activate and promote the energy transfer processes. Here, we present an Anderson-Newns model to describe the vibrational excitation and bond dissociation induced by plasmonic hot carriers. The nonthermal distribution of the hot carriers generated by plasmon damping is accounted for on equal footing with thermal carriers at a given temperature in the electron-molecule scattering. We found that the nonthermal electrons in the high energy region can, albeit in much smaller populations, provide an efficient and dominant channel for photodissociation especially in the low-temperature and quantum plasmon regime. Our model captures the wavelength dependence and reproduces the enhancement factors observed by experiments for oxygen dissociation on silver nanoparticles. It also paves a way to harvesting nonthermal plasmonic energy for photocatalysis in the quantum regime.

Enhancing Hot Electron Injection in Plasmonic Photodetectors through Roughened Interfaces

Ongoing efforts have been made to improve the photoresponsivity of plasmonic photodetectors. In this work, the photodetectors based on transparent conductive oxide (TCO)/Semiconductor/Metal configuration especially with a roughened interface were investigated numerically, and the effect of the roughness on the injection efficiency of hot electrons was analyzed. The simulated results indicate that a roughened structure alleviates effectively the momentum mismatch of hot electrons at the metal/semiconductor interface due to asymmetry factor, and greatly improves the injection efficiency as well as photoresponsivity. At the incidence wavelength of 1550 nm, the photoresponsivity increased by about 8 times. Meanwhile, the influence on the resonant wavelength shift is negligible where the roughness is nano-scale. Our work provides a valuable guidance for the theoretical and experimental research of plasmonic photodetectors.

Surface-Plasmon-Mediated Alloying for Monodisperse Au-Ag Alloy Nanoparticles in Liquid

Plasmonic noble-metal nanoparticles with broadly tunable optical properties and catalytically active surfaces offer a unique opportunity for photochemistry. Resonant optical excitation of surface-plasmon generates high-energy hot carriers, which can participate in photochemical reactions. Although the surface-plasmon-driven catalysis on molecules has been extensively studied, surface-plasmon-mediated synthesis of bimetallic nanomaterials is less reported. Herein, we perform a detailed investigation on the formation mechanism and colloidal stability of monodisperse Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles synthesized through irradiating the intermixture of Au nanochains and AgNO₃ solution with a nanosecond pulsed laser. It is revealed that the Ag atoms can be extracted from AgNO₃ solution by surface-plasmon-generated hot electrons and alloy with Au atoms. Particularly, the obtained Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles without any surfactants or ligands exhibit superior stability that is confirmed by experiments as well as DLVO-based theoretical simulation. Our work would provide novel insights into the synthesis of potentially useful bimetallic nanoparticles via surface-plasmon-medicated alloying.

Long-Range Plasmon-Induced Anisotropic Growth of an Organic Semiconductor between Isotropic Gold Nanoparticles

Plasmon-induced diazonium reduction was used to graft an organic semiconductor, namely oligo(bisthienylbenzene) (BTB), onto square arrays of gold nanoparticles (NPs) of various diameters. Grafting was evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements by the extinction spectra of the localized surface plasmon resonance, as well as by Raman and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopies. We show that BTB is selectively deposited around the NPs. The thickness of the layer increases with increasing irradiation time and reaches a limit which depends on the size of the NPs with the thicker organic layers being generated for smaller NPs. Under polarized irradiation, BTB growth is strongly anisotropic. Starting from arrays with square gratings and spherical NPs, long-range plasmon-induced anisotropic growth makes it possible to generate in the direction of the polarized light, lines, columns, or lines and columns of NPs connected by an organic semiconductor. These results demonstrate that the growth is due to hot electrons.

Mid-Infrared Response from Cr/n-Si Schottky Junction with an Ultra-Thin Cr Metal

Infrared detection technology has been widely applied in many areas. Unlike internal photoemission and the photoelectric mechanism, which are limited by the interface barrier height and material bandgap, the research of the hot carrier effect from nanometer thickness of metal could surpass the capability of silicon-based Schottky devices to detect mid-infrared and even far-infrared. In this work, we investigate the effects of physical characteristics of Cr nanometal surfaces and metal/silicon interfaces on hot carrier optical detection. Based on the results of scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis, the hot carrier effect and the variation of optical response intensity are found to depend highly on the physical properties of metal surfaces, such as surface coverage, metal thickness, and internal stress. Since the contact layer formed by Cr and Si is the main role of infrared light detection in the experiment, the higher the metal coverage, the higher the optical response. Additionally, a thicker metal surface makes the hot carriers take a longer time to convert into current signals after generation, leading to signal degradation due to the short lifetime of the hot carriers. Furthermore, the film with the best hot carrier effect induced in the Cr/Si structure is able to detect an infrared signal up to 4.2 μm. Additionally, it has a 229 times improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a single band compared with ones with less favorable conditions.

Wavelength-Dependent Bifunctional Plasmonic Photocatalysis in Au/Chalcopyrite Hybrid Nanostructures

Excited, or "hot" charge carrier generation and transfer driven by the decay of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) are key steps in plasmonic photocatalysis. Hybrid structures that contain both metal and semiconductor building blocks facilitate the extraction of reactive charge carriers and their utilization for photoelectrocatalysis. Additional functionality arises from hybrid structures that combine noble metal nanostructures with semiconductor components, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂) nanocrystals (NCs), which by themselves support quasistatic resonances. In this work, we use a hybrid membrane to integrate Au nanorods (NRs) with a longitudinal LSPR at 745 nm and CuFeS₂ NCs with a resonance peak at 490 nm into water-stable nanocomposites for robust and bifunctional photocatalysis of oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions in a wavelength-dependent manner. Excitation of NRs or NCs in the nanocomposite correlates with increased hydrogen or oxygen evolution, respectively, consistent with a light-driven electron transfer between the metal and semiconductor building blocks, the direction of which depends on the wavelength. The bifunctional photoreactivity of the nanocomposite is enhanced by Cu(I)/Cu(II)-assisted catalysis on the surface of the NCs.

Thermo-photo catalysis: a whole greater than the sum of its parts

Thermo-photo catalysis, which is the catalysis with the participation of both thermal and photo energies, not only reduces the large energy consumption of thermal catalysis but also addresses the low efficiency of photocatalysis. As a whole greater than the sum of its parts, thermo-photo catalysis has been proven as an effective and promising technology to drive chemical reactions. In this review, we first clarify the definition (beyond photo-thermal catalysis and plasmonic catalysis), classification, and principles of thermo-photo catalysis and then reveal its superiority over individual thermal catalysis and photocatalysis. After elucidating the design principles and strategies toward highly efficient thermo-photo catalytic systems, an ample discussion on the synergetic effects of thermal and photo energies is provided from two perspectives, namely, the promotion of photocatalysis by thermal energy and the promotion of thermal catalysis by photo energy. Subsequently, state-of-the-art techniques applied to explore thermo-photo catalytic mechanisms are reviewed, followed by a summary on the broad applications of thermo-photo catalysis and its energy management toward industrialization. In the end, current challenges and potential research directions related to thermo-photo catalysis are outlined.

Ultrafast Plasmonics Beyond the Perturbative Regime: Breaking the Electronic-Optical Dynamics Correspondence

The transient optical response of plasmonic nanostructures has recently been the focus of extensive research. Accurate prediction of the ultrafast dynamics following excitation of hot electrons by ultrashort laser pulses is of major relevance in a variety of contexts from the study of light harvesting and photocatalytic processes to nonlinear nanophotonics and the all-optical modulation of light. So far, all studies have assumed the correspondence between the temporal evolution of the dynamic optical signal, retrieved by transient absorption spectroscopy, and that of the photoexcited hot electrons, described in terms of their temperature. Here, we show both theoretically and experimentally that this correspondence does not hold under a nonperturbative excitation regime. Our results indicate that the main mechanism responsible for the breaking of the correspondence between electronic and optical dynamics is universal in plasmonics, being dominated by the nonlinear smearing of the Fermi-Dirac occupation probability at high hot-electron temperatures.

Surface-Plasmon-Assisted Growth, Reshaping and Transformation of Nanomaterials

Excitation of surface plasmon resonance of metal nanostructures is a promising way to break the limit of optical diffraction and to achieve a great enhancement of the local electromagnetic field by the confinement of optical field at the nanoscale. Meanwhile, the relaxation of collective oscillation of electrons will promote the generation of hot carrier and localized thermal effects. The enhanced electromagnetic field, hot carriers and localized thermal effects play an important role in spectral enhancement, biomedicine and catalysis of chemical reactions. In this review, we focus on surface-plasmon-assisted nanomaterial reshaping, growth and transformation. Firstly, the mechanisms of surface-plasmon-modulated chemical reactions are discussed. This is followed by a discussion of recent advances on plasmon-assisted self-reshaping, growth and etching of plasmonic nanostructures. Then, we discuss plasmon-assisted growth/deposition of non-plasmonic nanostructures and transformation of luminescent nanocrystal. Finally, we present our views on the current status and perspectives on the future of the field. We believe that this review will promote the development of surface plasmon in the regulation of nanomaterials.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Plasmonic Nanostructures

Thanks to their tunable and strong interaction with light, plasmonic nanostructures have been investigated for a wide range of applications. In most cases, controlling the electric field enhancement at the metal surface is crucial. This can be achieved by controlling the metal nanostructure size, shape, and location in three dimensions, which is synthetically challenging. Electrochemical methods can provide a reliable, simple, and cost-effective approach to nanostructure metals with a high degree of geometrical freedom. Herein, we review the use of electrochemistry to synthesize metal nanostructures in the context of plasmonics. Both template-free and templated electrochemical syntheses are presented, along with their strengths and limitations. While template-free techniques can be used for the mass production of low-cost but efficient plasmonic substrates, templated approaches offer an unprecedented synthetic control. Thus, a special emphasis is given to templated electrochemical lithographies, which can be used to synthesize complex metal architectures with defined dimensions and compositions in one, two and three dimensions. These techniques provide a spatial resolution down to the sub-10 nanometer range and are particularly successful at synthesizing well-defined metal nanoscale gaps that provide very large electric field enhancements, which are relevant for both fundamental and applied research in plasmonics.

Contact-Free Remote Manipulation of Hydrogel Properties Using Light-Triggerable Nanoparticles: A Materials Science Perspective for Biomedical Applications

Considerable progress has been made in synthesizing "intelligent", biodegradable hydrogels that undergo rapid changes in physicochemical properties once exposed to external stimuli. These advantageous properties of stimulus-triggered materials make them highly appealing to diverse biomedical applications. Of late, research on the incorporation of light-triggered nanoparticles (NPs) into polymeric hydrogel networks has gained momentum due to their ability to remotely tune hydrogel properties using facile, contact-free approaches, such as adjustment of wavelength and intensity of light source. These multi-functional NPs, in combination with tissue-mimicking hydrogels, are increasingly being used for on-demand drug release, preparing diagnostic kits, and fabricating smart scaffolds. Here, the authors discuss the atomic behavior of different NPs in the presence of light, and critically review the mechanisms by which NPs convert light stimuli into heat energy. Then, they explain how these NPs impact the mechanical properties and rheological behavior of NPs-impregnated hydrogels. Understanding the rheological behavior of nanocomposite hydrogels using different sophisticated strategies, including computer-assisted machine learning, is critical for designing the next generation of drug delivery systems. Next, they highlight the salient strategies that have been used to apply light-induced nanocomposites for diverse biomedical applications and provide an outlook for the further improvement of these NPs-driven light-responsive hydrogels.

Microscopic Understanding of Reaction Rates Observed in Plasmon Chemistry of Nanoparticle-Ligand Systems

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an effective and widely used technique to study chemical reactions induced or catalyzed by plasmonic substrates, since the experimental setup allows us to trigger and track the reaction simultaneously and identify the products. However, on substrates with plasmonic hotspots, the total signal mainly originates from these nanoscopic volumes with high reactivity and the information about the overall consumption remains obscure in SERS measurements. This has important implications; for example, the apparent reaction order in SERS measurements does not correlate with the real reaction order, whereas the apparent reaction rates are proportional to the real reaction rates as demonstrated by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. We determined the electric field enhancement distribution of a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) monolayer and calculated the SERS intensities in light-driven reactions in an adsorbed self-assembled molecular monolayer on the AuNP surface. Accordingly, even if a high conversion is observed in SERS due to the high reactivity in the hotspots, most of the adsorbed molecules on the AuNP surface remain unreacted. The theoretical findings are compared with the hot-electron-induced dehalogenation of 4-bromothiophenol, indicating a time dependency of the hot-carrier concentration in plasmon-mediated reactions. To fit the kinetics of plasmon-mediated reactions in plasmonic hotspots, fractal-like kinetics are well suited to account for the inhomogeneity of reactive sites on the substrates, whereas also modified standard kinetics model allows equally well fits. The outcomes of this study are on the one hand essential to derive a mechanistic understanding of reactions on plasmonic substrates by SERS measurements and on the other hand to drive plasmonic reactions with high local precision and facilitate the engineering of chemistry on a nanoscale.

The electronic structure of the metal-organic interface of isolated ligand coated gold nanoparticles

Light induced electron transfer reactions of molecules on the surface of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) depend significantly on the electronic properties of the metal-organic interface. Hybridized metal-molecule states and dipoles at the interface alter the work function and facilitate or hinder electron transfer between the NPs and ligand. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements of isolated AuNPs coated with thiolated ligands in a vacuum have been performed as a function of photon energy, and the depth dependent information of the metal-organic interface has been obtained. The role of surface dipoles in the XPS measurements of isolated ligand coated NPs is discussed and the binding energy of the Au 4f states is shifted by around 0.8 eV in the outer atomic layers of 4-nitrothiophenol coated AuNPs, facilitating electron transport towards the molecules. Moreover, the influence of the interface dipole depends significantly on the adsorbed ligand molecules. The present study paves the way towards the engineering of the electronic properties of the nanoparticle surface, which is of utmost importance for the application of plasmonic nanoparticles in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis and solar energy conversion.

Dynamical evolution of the Schottky barrier as a determinant contribution to electron-hole pair stabilization and photocatalysis of plasmon-induced hot carriers

The harnessing of plasmon-induced hot carriers promises to open new avenues for the development of clean energies and chemical catalysis. The extraction of carriers before thermalization and recombination is of fundamental importance to obtain appealing conversion yields. Here, hot carrier injection in the paradigmatic Au-TiO₂ system is studied by means of electronic and electron-ion dynamics. Our results show that pure electronic features (without considering many-body interactions or dissipation to the environment) contribute to the electron-hole separation stability. These results reveal the existence of a dynamic contribution to the interfacial potential barrier (Schottky barrier) that arises at the charge injection pace, impeding electronic back transfer. Furthermore, we show that this charge separation stabilization provides the time needed for the charge to leak to capping molecules placed over the TiO₂ surface triggering a coherent bond oscillation that will lead to a photocatalytic dissociation. We expect that our results will add new perspectives to the interpretation of the already detected long-lived hot carrier lifetimes and their catalytical effect, and concomitantly to their technological applications.

Energy and Momentum Distribution of Surface Plasmon-Induced Hot Carriers Isolated via Spatiotemporal Separation

Understanding the differences between photon-induced and plasmon-induced hot electrons is essential for the construction of devices for plasmonic energy conversion. The mechanism of the plasmonic enhancement in photochemistry, photocatalysis, and light-harvesting and especially the role of hot carriers is still heavily discussed. The question remains, if plasmon-induced and photon-induced hot carriers are fundamentally different or if plasmonic enhancement is only an effect of field concentration producing these carriers in greater numbers. For the bulk plasmon resonance, a fundamental difference is known, yet for the technologically important surface plasmons, this is far from being settled. The direct imaging of surface plasmon-induced hot carriers could provide essential insight, but the separation of the influence of driving laser, field-enhancement, and fundamental plasmon decay has proven to be difficult. Here, we present an approach using a two-color femtosecond pump-probe scheme in time-resolved 2-photon-photoemission (tr-2PPE), supported by a theoretical analysis of the light and plasmon energy flow. We separate the energy and momentum distribution of the plasmon-induced hot electrons from that of photoexcited electrons by following the spatial evolution of photoemitted electrons with energy-resolved photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) and momentum microscopy during the propagation of a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) pulse along a gold surface. With this scheme, we realize a direct experimental access to plasmon-induced hot electrons. We find a plasmonic enhancement toward high excitation energies and small in-plane momenta, which suggests a fundamentally different mechanism of hot electron generation, as previously unknown for surface plasmons.

Selective Enhancement of Surface and Bulk E-Field within Porous AuRh and AuRu Nanorods

A variety of multisegmented nanorods (NRs) composed of dense Au and porous Rh and Ru segments with lengths controlled down to ca. 10 nm are synthesized within porous anodic aluminum oxide membranes. Despite the high Rh and Ru porosity (i.e., ∼40%), the porous metal segments are able to efficiently couple with the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au NRs. Finite-difference time-domain simulations show that the LSPR wavelength can be precisely tuned by adjusting the Rh and Ru porosity. Additionally, light absorption inside Rh and Ru segments and the surface electric field (E-field) at Rh and Ru can be independently and selectively enhanced by varying the position of the Rh and Ru segment within the Au NR. The ability to selectively control and decouple the generation of high-energy, surface hot electrons and low-energy, bulk hot electrons within photocatalytic metals such as Rh and Ru makes these bimetallic structures great platforms for fundamental studies in plasmonics and hot-electron science.

Localized Orbital Excitation Drives Bond Formation in Plasmonic Catalysis

Localized surface plasmons generated on metallic nanostructures can be used to accelerate molecular transformations; however, the efficiency is limited by the challenge to control the energy/charge transfer at the interfaces. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments to reveal the mechanism of nitrophenol reduction on Au nanoparticles under visible-light irradiation and propose a strategy to further enhance the reaction rates. DFT calculations show a reduced activation barrier under electronic excitation on Au(111), thus explaining the measured higher rates under visible-light irradiation. Furthermore, we propose a heterostructure with Au nanoparticles covered by a thin film of hexagonal boron nitride; the latter is used to decouple the molecular orbitals from the metal to enable charge localization in the molecule. DFT calculations show that by this electronic decoupling, the activation barrier can be lowered by a factor of five. This work thus provides a valuable strategy for optimizing catalytic efficiency in plasmonic photocatalysis.

Selective Deposition of Catalytic Metals on Plasmonic Au Nanocups for Room-Light-Active Photooxidation of o-Phenylenediamine

Plasmonic hotspots can enhance hot charge carrier generation, offering new opportunities for improving the photocatalytic activity. In this work, eight types of heteronanostructures are synthesized by selectively depositing catalytic metals at the different sites of highly asymmetric Au nanocups for the photocatalytic oxidation of o-phenylenediamine. The oxidation of this molecule has so far mainly relied on the use of H2O2 as an oxidizing agent in the presence of an appropriate catalyst. The photocatalytic oxidation under visible light has not been reported before. The Au nanocups with AgPt nanoparticles grown at the opening edge and bottom exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. The generated hot electrons and holes both participate in the reaction. The hot carriers from the interband and intraband transitions are both utilized. The optimal catalyst shows a favorable activity even under room light. Simulations reveal that the profound electric field enhancement at the hotspots boosts the hot-carrier density in the catalytic nanoparticles, explaining the overwhelming photocatalytic activity of the optimal catalyst.

Controlled Assembly of Plasmonic Nanoparticles: From Static to Dynamic Nanostructures

The spatial arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles can dramatically affect their interaction with electromagnetic waves, which offers an effective approach to systematically control their optical properties and manifest new phenomena. To this end, significant efforts were made to develop methodologies by which the assembly structure of metal nanoparticles can be controlled with high precision. Herein, recent advances in bottom-up chemical strategies toward the well-controlled assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles, including multicomponent and multifunctional systems are reviewed. Further, it is discussed how the progress in this area has paved the way toward the construction of smart dynamic nanostructures capable of on-demand, reversible structural changes that alter their properties in a predictable and reproducible manner. Finally, this review provides insight into the challenges, future directions, and perspectives in the field of controlled plasmonic assemblies.

Enhancing photoelectrochemical water splitting with plasmonic Au nanoparticles

The water-based renewable chemical energy cycle has attracted interest due to its role in replacing existing non-renewable resources and alleviating environmental issues. Utilizing the semi-infinite solar energy source is the most appropriate way to sustain such a water-based energy cycle by producing and feeding hydrogen and oxygen. For production, an efficient photoelectrode is required to effectively perform the photoelectrochemical water splitting reaction. For this purpose, appropriately engineered nanostructures can be introduced into the photoelectrode to enhance light-matter interactions for efficient generation and transport of charges and activation of surface chemical reactions. Plasmon enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting, whose performance can potentially exceed classical efficiency limits, is of great importance in this respect. Plasmonic gold nanoparticles are widely accepted nanomaterials for such applications because they possess high chemical stability, efficiently absorb visible light unlike many inorganic oxides, and enhance light-matter interactions with localized plasmon relaxation processes. However, our understanding of the physical phenomena behind these particles is still not complete. This review paper focuses on understanding the interfacial phenomena between gold nanoparticles and semiconductors and provides a summary and perspective of recent studies on plasmon enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting using gold nanoparticles.

Theory of Plasmonic Hot-Carrier Generation and Relaxation

Hot-carrier (HC) generation from (localized) surface plasmon decay has recently attracted much attention due to its promising applications in physical, chemical, materials, and energy science. However, the detailed mechanisms of plasmonic HC generation, relaxation, and trapping are less studied. In this work, we developed and applied a quantum-mechanical model and coupled master equation method to study the generation of HCs from plasmon decay and their following relaxation processes with different mechanisms treated on equal footing. First, a quantum-mechanical model for HC generation is developed. Its connection to existing semiclassical models and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is discussed. Second, the relaxation and lifetimes of HCs are investigated in the presence of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. A GW-like approximation is introduced to account for the electron-electron scattering. The numerical simulations on the Jellium nanoparticles with a size up to 1.6 nm demonstrate the electron-electron scattering and electron-phonon scattering dominate different time scale in the relaxation dynamics. We also generalize the model to study the extraction of HCs to attached molecules. The quantum yield of extracting HCs for other applications is found to be size-dependent. In general, the smaller size of NP improves the quantum yield, which is in agreement with recent experimental measurements. Even though we demonstrate this newly developed theoretical formalism with Jellium model, the theory applies to any other atomistic models.

Impact of hybrid plasmonic nanoparticles on the charge carrier mobility of P3HT:PCBM polymer solar cells

The solution processable polymer solar cells have shown a great promise as a cost-effective photovoltaic technology. Here, the effect of carrier mobility changes has been comprehensively investigated on the performance of P3HT:PCBM polymer solar cells using electro-optical coupled simulation regimes, which may result from the embedding of SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂ plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) in the active layer. Firstly, the active layer thickness, stemmed from the low mobility of the charge carriers, is optimized. The device with 80 nm thick active layer provided maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.47%. Subsequently, the PCE has increased to 6.75% and 6.5%, respectively, along with the benefit of light scattering, near-fields and interparticle hotspots produced by embedded spherical and cubic nanoparticles. The PCE of the devices with incorporated plasmonic nanoparticles are remarkably enhanced up to 7.61% (for spherical NPs) and 7.35% (for cubic NPs) owing to the increase of the electron and hole mobilities to \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\upmu }_{e}=8\times {10}^{-7} \,{\text{m}}^{2}/\text{V}/\text{s}$$\end{document}μe=8×10-7m2/V/s and \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\upmu }_{h}=4\times {10}^{-7} \,{\text{m}}^{2}/\text{V}/\text{s}$$\end{document}μh=4×10-7m2/V/s, respectively (in the optimum case). Furthermore, SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂ NPs have been successfully synthesized by introducing and utilizing a simple and eco-friendly approach based on electroless pre-treatment deposition and Stober methods. Our findings represent a new facile approach in the fabrication of novel plasmonic NPs for efficient polymer solar cells.

Electron attachment to microhydrated 4-nitro- and 4-bromo-thiophenol

We investigate the effect of microhydration on electron attachment to thiophenols with halogen (Br) and nitro (NO₂) functional groups in the para position. We focus on the formation of anions upon the attachment of low-energy electrons with energies below 8 eV to heterogeneous clusters of the thiophenols with water. For nitro-thiophenol (NTP), the primary reaction channel observed is the associative electron attachment, irrespective of the microhydration. On the other hand, bromothiophenol (BTP) fragments significantly upon the electron attachment, producing Br^- and (BTP-H)^- anions. Microhydration suppresses fragmentation of both molecules, however in bromothiophenol, the Br^- channel remains intense and Br(H₂O)_n^- hydrated fragment clusters are observed. The results are supported by the reaction energetics obtained from ab initio calculations. Different dissociation dynamics of NTP and BTP can be related to different products of their plasmon induced reactions on Au nanoparticles. Computational modeling of the simplified BTP(H₂O) system indicates that the electron attachment products reflect the structure of neutral precursor clusters - the anion dissociation dynamics is controlled by the hydration site.

Tunable electron and hole injection channels at plasmonic Al-TiO2 interfaces

Metallic nanostructures can strongly absorb light through their plasmon excitations, whose nonradiative decay generates hot electron-hole pairs. When the metallic nanostructure is interfaced with a semiconductor, the spatial separation of hot carriers plays the central and decisive roles in photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications. In recent years, free-electron metals like Al have attracted tremendous attentions due to the much higher plasmon frequencies that could extend to the ultraviolet regime. Here, the plasmon excitations and charge separations at the Al-TiO₂ interfaces have been investigated using quantum-mechanical calculations, where the atomic structures and electronic dynamics are all treated from first-principles. It is found that the high-frequency plasmon of Al produces abundant and broad-band hot-carrier distributions, where the electron-hole symmetry is broken by the presence of the semiconductor band gap. Such an asymmetric hot-carrier distribution provides two competing channels, which can be controlled either by tuning the laser frequency, or by harnessing the plasmon frequency through the geometry and shape of the metallic nanostructure. Our study suggests that the Al plasmon offers a versatile and tunable pathway for the charge transfer and separation, and has general implications in plasmon-assisted photovoltaics and photocatalysis.

Material-assisted mass spectrometric analysis of low molecular weight compounds for biomedical applications

Low molecular weight compounds play an important role in encoding the current physiological state of an individual. Laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) offers high sensitivity with low cost for molecular detection, but it is not able to cover small molecules due to the drawbacks of the conventional matrix. Advanced materials are better alternatives, showing little background interference and high LDI efficiency. Herein, we first classify the current materials with a summary of compositions and structures. Matrix preparation protocols are then reviewed, to enhance the selectivity and reproducibility of MS data better. Finally, we highlight the biomedical applications of material-assisted LDI MS, at the tissue, bio-fluid, and cellular levels. We foresee that the advanced materials will bring far-reaching implications in LDI MS towards real-case applications, especially in clinical settings.

Fermi Level Equilibration at the Metal-Molecule Interface in Plasmonic Systems

We highlight a new metal-molecule charge transfer process by tuning the Fermi energy of plasmonic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ. The strong adsorption of halide ions upshifts the Fermi level of AgNPs by up to ∼0.3 eV in the order Cl^- < Br^- < I^-, favoring the spontaneous charge transfer to aligned molecular acceptor orbitals until charge neutrality across the interface is achieved. By carefully quantifying, experimentally and theoretically, the Fermi level upshift, we show for the first time that this effect is comparable in energy to different plasmonic effects such as the plasmoelectric effect or hot-carriers production. Moreover, by monitoring in situ the adsorption dynamic of halide ions in different AgNP-molecule systems, we show for the first time that the catalytic role of halide ions in plasmonic nanostructures depends on the surface affinity of halide ions compared to that of the target molecule.

Copper-Based Plasmonic Catalysis: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

With the capability of inducing intense electromagnetic field, energetic charge carriers, and photothermal effect, plasmonic metals provide a unique opportunity for efficient light utilization and chemical transformation. Earth-abundant low-cost Cu possesses intense and tunable localized surface plasmon resonance from ultraviolet-visible to near infrared region. Moreover, Cu essentially exhibits remarkable catalytic performance toward various reactions owing to its intriguing physical and chemical properties. Coupling with light-harvesting ability and catalytic function, plasmonic Cu serves as a promising platform for efficient light-driven chemical reaction. Herein, recent advancements of Cu-based plasmonic photocatalysis are systematically summarized, including designing and synthetic strategies for Cu-based catalysts, plasmonic catalytic performance, and mechanistic understanding over Cu-based plasmonic catalysts. What's more, approaches for the enhancement of light utilization efficiency and construction of active centers on Cu-based plasmonic catalysts are highlighted and discussed in detail, such as morphology and size control, regulation of electronic structure, defect and strain engineering, etc. Remaining challenges and future perspectives for further development of Cu-based plasmonic catalysis are also proposed.

Confinement Effect of Plasmon for the Fabrication of Interconnected AuNPs through the Reduction of Diazonium Salts

This paper describes a rapid bottom-up approach to selectively functionalize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate using the plasmon confinement effect. The plasmonic substrates based on a AuNP-free surfactant were fabricated by electrochemical deposition. Using this bottom-up technique, many sub-30 nm spatial gaps between the deposited AuNPs were randomly generated on the ITO substrate, which is difficult to obtain with a top-down approach (i.e., E-beam lithography) due to its fabrication limits. The 4-Aminodiphenyl (ADP) molecules were grafted directly onto the AuNPs through a plasmon-induced reduction of the 4-Aminodiphenyl diazonium salts (ADPD). The ADP organic layer preferentially grew in the narrow gaps between the many adjacent AuNPs to create interconnected AuNPs. This novel strategy opens up an efficient technique for the localized surface modification at the nanoscale over a macroscopic area, which is anticipated to be an advanced nanofabrication technique.

How to Utilize Excited Plasmon Energy Efficiently

Plasmonic nanoparticles can concentrate electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale and function as a powerful intermediary to enhance light-matter interactions. They have been widely employed for solar energy harvesting, photocatalysis, medicine, sensing, imaging, spectroscopy, optics, and optoelectronics. In this Perspective, we provide a brief overview of research progress in the utilization of excited plasmon energy, with emphasis on the charge- and energy-transfer processes. We discuss important factors that affect the charge- and energy-transfer efficiencies and present open questions and major challenges in the efficient utilization of excited plasmon energy.

Probing the plasmon-driven Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions with cargo-TERS towards tailored catalysis

We present a label-free approach that is based on tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) for a direct in situ assessment of the molecular reactivity in plasmon-driven reactions. Using this analytical approach, named cargo-TERS, we investigate the relationship between the chemical structure of aromatic halides and the catalytic probability of the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction on gold-palladium bimetallic nanoplates (Au@PdNPs). We demonstrate that cargo-TERS can be used to quantify the yield of biphenyl-4,4'-dithiol (BPDT), the product of the coupling reaction. Our results also show that the halide reactivity decreases from bromo through chloro to fluorohalides. Finally, we employ this novel imaging technique to unravel the nanoscale reactivity and selectivity of Au@PdNPs. We find that the edges and corners of these nanostructures exhibit the highest catalytic reactivity, while the flat terraces of Au@PdNPs remain catalytically inactive.

Kinetics and Mechanism of Plasmon-Driven Dehalogenation Reaction of Brominated Purine Nucleobases on Ag and Au

Plasmon-driven photocatalysis is an emerging and promising application of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs). An understanding of the fundamental aspects of plasmon interaction with molecules and factors controlling their reaction rate in a heterogeneous system is of high importance. Therefore, the dehalogenation kinetics of 8-bromoguanine (BrGua) and 8-bromoadenine (BrAde) on aggregated surfaces of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) NPs have been studied to understand the reaction kinetics and the underlying reaction mechanism prevalent in heterogeneous reaction systems induced by plasmons monitored by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We conclude that the time-average constant concentration of hot electrons and the time scale of dissociation of transient negative ions (TNI) are crucial in defining the reaction rate law based on a proposed kinetic model. An overall higher reaction rate of dehalogenation is observed on Ag compared with Au, which is explained by the favorable hot-hole scavenging by the reaction product and the byproduct. We therefore arrive at the conclusion that insufficient hole deactivation could retard the reaction rate significantly, marking itself as rate-determining step for the overall reaction. The wavelength dependency of the reaction rate normalized to absorbed optical power indicates the nonthermal nature of the plasmon-driven reaction. The study therefore lays a general approach toward understanding the kinetics and reaction mechanism of a plasmon-driven reaction in a heterogeneous system, and furthermore, it leads to a better understanding of the reactivity of brominated purine derivatives on Ag and Au, which could in the future be exploited, for example, in plasmon-assisted cancer therapy.

Atomically Conformal Metal Laminations on Plasmonic Nanocrystals for Efficient Catalysis

Despite the enormous application potential, methods for conformal few-atomic-layer deposition on colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) are scarce. Similar to the process of lamination, we introduce a "confine and shine" strategy to homogeneously modify the different surface curvatures of plasmonic NCs with ultrathin conformal layers of diverse catalytic noble metals. This self-limited epitaxial skinlike metal growth harvests the localized surface plasmon resonance to induce reduction chemistry directly on the NC surface, confined inside hollow silica. This strategy avoids any kinetic anisotropic metal deposition. Unlike the conventional thick, anisotropic, and dendritic shells, which show severe nonradiative damping, the skinlike metal lamination preserves the key plasmonic properties of the core NCs. Consequently, the plasmonic-catalytic hybrid nanoreactors can carry out a variety of organic reactions with impressive rates.

Plasmonic enhancement of molecular hydrogen dissociation on metallic magnesium nanoclusters

Light-driven plasmonic enhancement of chemical reactions on metal catalysts is a promising strategy to achieve highly selective and efficient chemical transformations. The study of plasmonic catalyst materials has traditionally focused on late transition metals such as Au, Ag, and Cu. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the plasmonic properties of a set of earth-abundant elements such as Mg, which exhibit interesting hydrogenation chemistry with potential applications in hydrogen storage. This work explores the optical, electronic, and catalytic properties of a set of metallic Mg nanoclusters with up to 2057 atoms using time-dependent density functional tight-binding and density functional theory calculations. Our results show that Mg nanoclusters are able to produce highly energetic hot electrons with energies of up to 4 eV. By electronic structure analysis, we find that these hot electrons energetically align with electronic states of physisorbed molecular hydrogen, occupation of which by hot electrons can promote the hydrogen dissociation reaction. We also find that the reverse reaction, hydrogen evolution on metallic Mg, can potentially be promoted by hot electrons, but following a different mechanism. Thus, from a theoretical perspective, Mg nanoclusters display very promising behaviour for their use in light promoted storage and release of hydrogen.

Quantitative Ultrafast Electron-Temperature Dynamics in Photo-Excited Au Nanoparticles

The femtosecond evolution of the electronic temperature of laser-excited gold nanoparticles is measured, by means of ultrafast time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy induced by extreme-ultraviolet radiation pulses. The temperature of the electron gas is deduced by recording and fitting high-resolution photo emission spectra around the Fermi edge of gold nanoparticles providing a direct, unambiguous picture of the ultrafast electron-gas dynamics. These results will be instrumental to the refinement of existing models of femtosecond processes in laterally-confined and bulk condensed-matter systems, and for understanding more deeply the role of hot electrons in technological applications.

Probing of coupling effect induced plasmonic charge accumulation for water oxidation

A key issue for redox reactions in plasmon-induced photocatalysis, particularly for water oxidation, is the concentration of surface-accumulating charges (electrons or holes) at a reaction site for artificial photosynthesis. However, where plasmonic charge accumulated at a catalyst's surface, and how to improve local charge density at active sites, remains unknown because it is difficult to identify the exact spatial location and local density of the plasmon-induced charge, particularly with regard to holes. Herein, we show that at the single particle level, plasmon-coupling-induced holes can be greatly accumulated at the plasmonic Au nanoparticle dimer/TiO2 interface in the nanogap region, as directly evidenced by the locally enhanced surface photovoltage. Such an accumulation of plasmonic holes can significantly accelerate the water oxidation reaction (multi-holes involved) at the interfacial reaction site, with nearly one order of magnitude enhancement in photocatalytic activities compared to those of highly dispersed Au nanoparticles on TiO2. Combining Kelvin probe force microscopy and theoretical simulation, we further clarified that the local accumulated hole density is proportional to the square of the local near-field enhancement. Our findings advance the understanding of how charges spatially distribute in plasmonic systems and the specific role that local charge density at reaction sites plays in plasmonic photocatalysis.

The Pivotal Role of Hot Carriers in Plasmonic Catalysis of C-N Bond Forming Reaction of Amines

Here, we demonstrate the simultaneous utilization of both the hot carriers (electrons and holes) in the photocatalytic transformation of benzylamine to N-benzylidenebenzylamine and the scope of reaction has also been successfully demonstrated with catalytic oxidation of 4-methoxybenzylamine. The wavelength-dependent excitation of AuNP allows us to tune the potential energy of charge carriers relative to the redox potential of the reactants which leads to energetically favorable product formation on the nanoparticle surface. We capture the formation of reaction intermediates and products by using in situ Raman spectroscopy, complemented by NMR spectroscopy and GC-MS. Based on the experimental substantiations, a plausible reaction mechanism has been proposed.
