Confusing one person with another: What errors reveal about the elementary forms of social relations

Does social cognition influence the relation between neurocognitive deficits and vocational functioning in schizophrenia?

Research on barriers to treatment and rehabilitation readiness in people with schizophrenia, especially focusing on risk factors of poor outcome in social and vocational functioning, has focused on the role of social cognition and neurocognition. Others have hypothesized that social cognition (i.e., encoding and understanding of social cues guided by social schemas or scripts) may be one mediator between basic neurocognition and functional outcome. Our study analyzes data from 133 DSM-IV schizophrenic inpatients on a rehabilitation ward using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test whether social cognition has a stronger and more direct influence on vocational functioning than nonsocial cognition. The results supported the hypothesized model; that is, 25% of work-related social skills could be explained by social cognition and nonsocial cognition. The direct impact of nonsocial cognition on vocational functioning was smaller than the impact of social cognition on work-related social skills. Nevertheless, an overwhelming proportion of social cognition (83%) could be explained by nonsocial cognition.

Role congruity theory of prejudice toward female leaders

A role congruity theory of prejudice toward female leaders proposes that perceived incongruity between the female gender role and leadership roles leads to 2 forms of prejudice: (a) perceiving women less favorably than men as potential occupants of leadership roles and (b) evaluating behavior that fulfills the prescriptions of a leader role less favorably when it is enacted by a woman. One consequence is that attitudes are less positive toward female than male leaders and potential leaders. Other consequences are that it is more difficult for women to become leaders and to achieve success in leadership roles. Evidence from varied research paradigms substantiates that these consequences occur, especially in situations that heighten perceptions of incongruity between the female gender role and leadership roles.

The Same Old Song?-Stability and Change in Relationship Schemas From Adolescence to Young Adulthood

Relationship schemas are core elements of personality that guide interpersonal functioning. The aim of this study is to examine stability and change in relationship schemas across two developmental epochs-adolescence and young adulthood-in the stories that people tell about their interactions with others. Using the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme Method, relationship themes were coded from semistructured interviews conducted in adolescence and again at age 25. The sample consisted of 40 participants in a longitudinal study of adolescent and young adult psychological development. There was considerable stability in the frequency with which particular themes were expressed in the narratives of adolescents and young adults. Significant changes from adolescence to young adulthood included a decrease in the perception of others as rejecting and of the self as opposing others. Young adults saw themselves and others more positively, and used a broader repertoire of themes in their relationship narratives than they had as adolescents. The basic continuity and particular changes in relationship schemas found in this study are consistent with knowledge about the adolescent-to-young-adult transition derived from other empirical and clinical findings. Relationship schemas may be rich units of study for learning about the development of interpersonal functioning.

Acquisition of the algorithms of social life: a domain-based approach

Proposing that the algorithms of social life are acquired as a domain-based process, the author offers distinctions between social domains preparing the individual for proximity-maintenance within a protective relationship (attachment domain), use and recognition of social dominance (hierarchical power domain), identification and maintenance of the lines dividing "us" and "them" (coalitional group domain), negotiation of matched benefits with functional equals (reciprocity domain), and selection and protection of access to sexual partners (mating domain). Flexibility in the implementation of domains occurs at 3 different levels: versatility at a bioecological level, variations in the cognitive representation of individual experience, and cultural and individual variations in the explicit management of social life. Empirical evidence for domain specificity was strongest for the attachment domain; supportive evidence was also found for the distinctiveness of the 4 other domains. Implications are considered at theoretical and applied levels.

Asymmetries in the perception of other as a function of social position and context

In two experiments an adaptation of the paradigm developed by Taylor, Fiske, Etcoff & Ruderman (1978) was used to investigate the impact of contextual factors on the accentuation effect, and asymmetries in the outgroup homogeneity effect as a function of relative group status. In both experiments targets were categorized on the basis of highly salient physical features, which also evoke asymmetric positions in intergroup relations: skin colour in experiment 1 and sex in experiment 2. In experiment 1, with black and white participants, context was manipulated by introducing topics of discussion which were relevant (interethnic relations) or irrelevant (student university life) to the categorization, whereas in experiment 2, with female and male participants, the relevant topic of discussion was dating relationships and the irrelevant one as in the previous experiment. The results show that the accentuation effect was affected by context in experiment 1, but not in experiment 2, and the outgroup homogeneity effect was not symmetrical. Overall, target members of subordinate groups, blacks in experiment 1 and females in experiment 2, were more homogenized than target members of dominant groups, whites in experiment 1 and males in experiment 2.

Categories of social relationship

The study of social relationships lies at the heart of the social sciences, but our understanding of the cognitive structures that support them has received little attention. This paper develops an account of the form and content of these structures, arguing that social relationships are represented by a small number of categories, rather than by dimensions as proposed by others. Taxometric analyses demonstrated that categories proposed by Fiske (1991) are truly discrete, controverting dimensional representation and one possible form of prototype structure. The categories appear to combine in the specification of actually existing social relationships, and are more informative, or "basic", then colloquial relationship categories.
