Abstract
In this study, a series of tetrafluoroborates with non- π -conjugated [BF 4 ] tetrahedra are investigated systematically by utilizing the first-principles calculations. Theoretical studies demonstrate that tetrafluoroborates with alkali and/or alkaline-earth metals are more favorable for deep-ultraviolet transmission and are comparable to the classical deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) material, MgF 2 . Furthermore, bandgap decrease with the increasing of ionic radii in alkali and/or alkaline-earth metals. Introducing highly polarizable cations with d 10 -configuration or cations with lone pair electrons into the structure will decrease the bandgaps. The birefringence and second harmonic generation effects are not large enough in tetrafluoroborates because polarizability anisotropy and hyperpolarizability in non- π -conjugated [BF 4 ] tetrahedra are much smaller than those in π -conjugated groups. However, the second harmonic generation effect for [BF 4 ] tetrahedra has a higher contribution in comparison with that due to birefringence. To effectively synthesize the borate fluorides or fluorooxoborates in the deep-UV region, raw materials with B-F bonds are preferred.

Abstract
Although phosphates are a rich source of deep-ultraviolet optical materials, the realization of large optical anisotropy in them still remains a challenge because of the small polarizability anisotropy of [PO4] units. Inspired by the fluoridation strategy and hydrogen bond interaction, a new metal-free monofluorophosphate, (N2H6)[HPO3F]2, was synthesized, which exhibits a large birefringence (cal. 0.077) and wide band gap (∼6.51 eV). Such a large birefringence in (N2H6)[HPO3F]2 sets a new record among available fluorophosphates, and the [HPO3F] unit is theoretically confirmed to be a new birefringence-active unit.

Abstract
A new borate, Na2SrB16O26, was synthesized by the high-temperature solution method. It exhibits complicated interpenetrating 3D B-O frameworks composed of the functional building block (FBB) [B8O16]. The UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy shows that it has a deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edge (<200 nm). The relationship between the structures and optical properties was uncovered by theoretical calculations. By the first-principles calculation, the birefringence is estimated to be 0.07 at 1064 nm. The response electron distribution anisotropy (REDA) analysis indicates that the [BO3] units contribute mainly to the generation of the moderate birefringence.

Abstract
The exploration of A-Mo-P-O (A = Rb, Cs) systems has allowed several new Mo(V) phosphates, Rb2MoP2O9, Rb6Mo2P4O19 and Cs6Mo2P4O19, to be synthesized through the spontaneous nucleation method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the identical stoichiometry compounds Rb2MoP2O9 and Cs2MoP2O9 belong to different space groups C2/c and Pbca, respectively. Both compounds consist of dissimilar 1D [Mo-O-P]∞ chains with different repeated building units, while monovalent cations fill in spaces to form 3D structures. However, Rb6Mo2P4O19 and Cs6Mo2P4O19 are isostructural and crystallize in the same space group of P21/c. They exhibit a 3D framework structure with 0D Mo2O5O6P4O8 groups, which are separated by Rb/Cs atoms. Interestingly, structural relationships between the different monophosphates of the A-Mo-P-O (A = Rb, Cs) systems are presented in which distinct polyanionic configurations appear owing to the A/P ratios, as well as the size of the univalent cations. Further, detailed structural comparisons, optical properties and theoretical calculations are also discussed.

Abstract
Exploring significant ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is hindered by rigorous and contradictory requirements, especially, possessing a moderate optical birefringence to meet phase-matching (PM). Except for suitable birefringence, small chromatic dispersion is also crucial to blue-shift the PM wavelength. Here, the introduction of fluorinated tetrahedral boron-centred chromophore strategy was proposed to optimize the chromatic dispersion. Herein, [BF4]- unit with large HOMO-LUMO band gap was introduced to Na-B-O-F system and Na4B8O9F10 was designed and synthesized successfully for the first time. Na4B8O9F10 with optimized chromatic dispersion can achieve a short second harmonic generation PM wavelength of 240 nm with a relatively small birefringence (cal. 0.036@1064 nm). Notably, Na4B8O9F10 is the first acentric crystal with [BF4]- unit among reported metal-fluorooxoborate system, involving isolated [BF4]- and novel [B7O10F6]5- fundamental building blocks.

Abstract
A new alkali-metal iodate, K6(IO6H4)(HI2O6)(HIO3)2(IO3)4·2H2O (KIOH), was successfully grown at room temperature by a slow evaporation method. To our knowledge, the title compound is the first alkali-metal iodate containing isolated [I5+O3] and [I7+O6] units in one structure. Both the bond valence sum and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed this phenomenon, which is consistent with the single-crystal data. Also, the theoretical calculation results showed that the title compound is a potential birefringent material. What is more, the low-cost growth of centimeter-sized crystals for the title compound greatly enriches the structural chemistry of the iodate system.

Abstract
A new alkaline-earth metal borate, Sr3B14O24, was successfully synthesized by a high-temperature solution method. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (no. 14) and features a fundamental building block (FBB) [B14O30] which is composed of eight [BO3] and six [BO4] units. The FBBs further condense to form an unwonted infinite 2D double layer extended in the bc plane. The UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum shows that the cutoff edge of Sr3B14O24 is less than 200 nm, which indicates its potential use in the deep UV region. In addition, the first principles theoretical study was carried out to better understand the relationship between the structure and performance.

Abstract
Benefiting from the planar π-conjugated (HxC3N3O3)x-3 (x = 0-3) groups, cyanurate crystals have recently become a research hotspot in birefringent materials. Herein, by combining the (HxC3N3O3)x-3 (x = 0-3) group with the (CN3H6)+ cationic group, two metal-free cyanurates, GU(H2C3N3O3) (I) and GU3(H2C3N3O3)3(H3C3N3O3) (II), were obtained by the hydrothermal method. These compounds have wide band gaps (∼5 eV) and a large birefringence (∼0.40@400 nm), demonstrating their potential to be ultraviolet birefringent crystals. Moreover, first-principles calculations indicate that their large birefringence values originated from the synergistic effect of the (CN3H6)+ cations and (HxC3N3O3)x-3 (x = 0-3) groups. These findings provide a new design strategy for exploring low-cost UV birefringent crystals with a large birefringence.

Abstract
The discovery of new borates with unique structures has always been a growing part of solid-state chemistry, especially for polyborates. Herein, a new aluminoborate, Cs3AlB6O12, has been discovered by a high-temperature solution in a vacuum system. The highly polymerized [B12O24] cluster, unlike the annular configuration in previously reported polyborates, is found in Cs3AlB6O12 for the first time. The different linkage reflected by the local symmetry in cluster makes these borates not isotypic, although the formula of [B12O24] is identical. Experimental measurement performed on Cs3AlB6O12 powder reveals the deep-ultraviolet transparent spectral feature.

Abstract
Ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals which can produce short-wavelength lasers via a direct second harmonic generation (SHG) process are of great importance in modern laser technology. Currently, the exploration of UV NLO crystals in borosulfates is nearly stagnant since the non-phase matching (PM) property lies on the small birefringence induced by the intrinsically small optical anisotropy of the tetrahedral groups. Herein, for the first time, the planar [BO3 ] units were introduced into borosulfates leading to a boron-rich borosulfate (NH4 )2 B4 SO10 with unprecedented [B4 SO10 ]∞ layers and evidently enhanced birefringence. To the best of our knowledge, it achieves the shortest SHG PM wavelength of 252 nm in all reported borosulfates with deep UV cutoff edge (184 nm), large SHG response (1.1×KDP at 1064 nm and 0.15×β-BBO at 532 nm) and large birefringence (0.053 at 1064 nm) and is easy to grow single crystals via simple chemical vapor deposition method. These results confirm the feasibility of utilizing planar [BO3 ] units to optimize birefringence of borosulfates, and also open up broad prospects for UV NLO crystals in boron-rich borosulfates.

Abstract
A new beryllium-free zincoborate, BaZn3(BO3)2F2, with a KBBF-type structure has been synthesized for the first time. The electrostatic force of interaction in BaZn3(BO3)2F2 provides better linkage in neighboring [ZnBO3F]∞ single layers. BaZn3(BO3)2F2 is the first case of borates with both [ZnO3F] tetrahedra and [ZnO6] octahedra, enriching the structural chemistry of borate system. All the coplanar [BO3] triangles align in the same direction with a high density, which endows BaZn3(BO3)2F2 with a large birefringence of cal. 0.076 at 1064 nm. This work is of great significance to design beryllium-free borates with a KBBF-type structure.

Abstract
Maximizing the optical anisotropy in birefringent materials has emerged as an efficient route for modulating the polarization-dependent light propagation. Currently, the generation of deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) polarized light below 200 nm is essential but challenging due to the interdisciplinary significance and insufficiency of high-performing birefringent crystals. Herein, by introducing multiple heteroanionic units, the first sodium difluorodihydroxytriborate-boric acid Na[B3 O3 F2 (OH)2 ]⋅[B(OH)3 ] has been characterized as a novel deep-UV birefringent crystal. Two rare heteroanionic units, [B3 O3 F2 (OH)2 ] and [B(OH)3 ], optimally align to induce large optical anisotropy and also the dangling bonds are eliminated with hydrogens, which results in an extremely large birefringence and band gap. The well-ordered OH/F anions in [B3 O3 F2 (OH)2 ] and [B(OH)3 ] were identified and confirmed by various approaches, and also the origin of large birefringence was theoretically discussed. These results confirm the feasibility of utilizing hydrogen involved heteroanionic units to design crystals with large birefringence, and also expand the alternative system of deep-UV birefringent crystals with new hydroxyfluorooxoborates.
