Metal-Organic Frameworks: Synthetic Methods and Potential Applications

Metal-organic frameworks represent a porous class of materials that are build up from metal ions or oligonuclear metallic complexes and organic ligands. They can be considered as sub-class of coordination polymers and can be extended into one-dimension, two-dimensions, and three-dimensions. Depending on the size of the pores, MOFs are divided into nanoporous, mesoporous, and macroporous items. The latter two are usually amorphous. MOFs display high porosity, a large specific surface area, and high thermal stability due to the presence of coordination bonds. The pores can incorporate neutral molecules, such as solvent molecules, anions, and cations, depending on the overall charge of the MOF, gas molecules, and biomolecules. The structural diversity of the framework and the multifunctionality of the pores render this class of materials as candidates for a plethora of environmental and biomedical applications and also as catalysts, sensors, piezo/ferroelectric, thermoelectric, and magnetic materials. In the present review, the synthetic methods reported in the literature for preparing MOFs and their derived materials, and their potential applications in environment, energy, and biomedicine are discussed.

New Bis-Pyrazole-Bis-Acetate Based Coordination Complexes: Influence of Counter-Anions and Metal Ions on the Supramolecular Structures

A new flexible bis-pyrazol-bis-acetate ligand, diethyl 2,2’-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis (5-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3,1-diyl))diacetate (L), has been synthesised, and three coordination complexes, namely, [Zn(L)2](BF4)2 (1), [MnLCl2] (2) and [CdLCl2] (3) have been obtained. All ligands and complexes were characterised by IR, mass spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray diffraction experiment revealed that the primary supramolecular building block of 1 is a hexagonal chair shaped 0D hydrogen bonded synthon (stabilised by C–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonding and C=O∙∙∙π interactions), which further built into a 2D corrugated sheet-like architecture having a 3-c net honeycomb topology, and finally extended to a 3D hydrogen bonded network structure having a five nodal 1,3,3,3,7-c net, through C–H∙∙∙F interactions. On the other hand, the two crystallographically independent molecules of 2 exhibited two distinct supramolecular structures such as 2D hydrogen bonded sheet structure and 1D zigzag hydrogen bonded chain, sustained by C–H∙O and C–H∙∙∙Cl interactions, which are further self-assembled into a 3,4-c network structure, and 3 showed a 2D hydrogen bonded sheet structure. The supramolecular structural diversity in these complexes is due to the different conformations adopted by the ligands, which are mainly induced by different metal ions with coordination environments controlled by different anions. Hirshfeld surface analysis was explored for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the supramolecular interactions.

Halogen Bonds Fabricate 2D Molecular Self-Assembled Nanostructures by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Halogen bonds are currently new noncovalent interactions due to their moderate strength and high directionality, which are widely investigated in crystal engineering. The study about supramolecular two-dimensional architectures on solid surfaces fabricated by halogen bonding has been performed recently. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has the advantages of realizing in situ, real-time, and atomic-level characterization. Our group has carried out molecular self-assembly induced by halogen bonds at the liquid–solid interface for about ten years. In this review, we mainly describe the concept and history of halogen bonding and the progress in the self-assembly of halogen-based organic molecules at the liquid/graphite interface in our laboratory. Our focus is mainly on (1) the effect of position, number, and type of halogen substituent on the formation of nanostructures; (2) the competition and cooperation of the halogen bond and the hydrogen bond; (3) solution concentration and solvent effects on the molecular assembly; and (4) a deep understanding of the self-assembled mechanism by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Electrically conductive Cu(II)-based 1D coordination polymer with theoretical insight

A nitro-functionalized Cu(ii)-based one-dimensional coordination polymer (1D CP) [Cu(nip)(4-phpy)2]n (1) (H2nip = 5-nitroisophthalic acid and 4-phpy = 4-phenylpyridine) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). In the solid-state self-assembly of 1, two sets of weak intermolecular forces, CHπ interaction among the axially bound 4-phpy ligands and ππ interaction among bridging nip ligands from adjacent 1D coordination polymeric chains led to 3D supramolecular packing. Interestingly compound 1 exhibited electrical conductivity in the semiconducting regime and behaved as a Schottky barrier diode.

Crystal Engineering of a Hydrazone Molecule toward High Elasticity and Bright Luminescence

Flexible luminescent crystals have attracted increasing attention on account of the potential application value in optical material fields. How to design crystals with high elasticity and bright luminescence is an urgent duty that material researchers want to effectuate. Crystal engineering could achieve different crystal materials with various functions based on one molecular structure. Therefore, crystal engineering provides a potential strategy to improve the properties of flexible crystals. In this paper, we gave a pioneer work to improve the properties of flexible luminescent crystals by designing on crystal structure. By disclosing the relationship of structure-property, our work extracted the advantages (elasticity or bright emission) of two inferior crystals and obtained three elastic bending crystals with outstanding emission behaviors. Notably, our work not only achieves the fabrication of flexible crystals based on crystal engineering aspect but also provides good candidates for flexible optical waveguiding materials.

Activating Chalcogen Bonding (ChB) in Alkylseleno/Alkyltelluroacetylenes toward Chalcogen Bonding Directionality Control

Activation of a deep electron-deficient area on chalcogen atoms (Ch=Se, Te) is demonstrated in alkynyl chalcogen derivatives, in the prolongation of the (C≡)C-Ch bond. The solid-state structures of 1,4-bis(methylselenoethynyl)perfluorobenzene (1Se) show the formation of recurrent chalcogen-bonded (ChB) motifs. Association of 1Se and the tellurium analogue 1Te with 4,4'-bipyridine and with the stronger Lewis base 1,4-di(4-pyridyl)piperazine gives 1:1 co-crystals with 1D extended structures linked by short and directional ChB interactions, comparable to those observed with the corresponding halogen bond (XB) donor, 1,4-bis(iodoethynyl)-perfluorobenzene. This "alkynyl" approach for chalcogen activation provides the crystal-engineering community with efficient, and neutral ChB donors for the elaboration of supramolecular 1D (and potentially 2D or 3D) architectures, with a degree of strength and predictability comparable to that of halogen bonding in iodoacetylene derivatives.

Hydrogen-Mediated Noncovalent Interactions in Solids: What Can NMR Crystallography Tell About?

Hydrogen atoms play a crucial role in the aggregation of organic (bio)molecules through diverse number of noncovalent interactions that they mediate, such as electrostatic in proton transfer systems, hydrogen bonding, and CH-π interactions, to mention only the most prominent. To identify and adequately describe such low-energy interactions, increasingly sensitive methods have been developed over time, among which quantum chemical computations have witnessed impressive advances in recent years. For reaching the present state-of-the-art, computations had to rely on a pool of relevant experimental data, needed at least for validation, if not also for other purposes. In the case of molecular crystals, the best illustration for the synergy between computations and experiment is given by the so-called NMR crystallography approach. Originally designed to increase the confidence level in crystal structure determination of organic compounds from powders, NMR crystallography is able now to offer also a wealth of information regarding the noncovalent interactions that drive molecules to pack in a given crystalline pattern or another. This is particularly true for the noncovalent interactions which depend on the exact location of labile hydrogen atoms in the system: in such cases, NMR crystallography represents a valuable characterization tool, in some cases complementing even the standard single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. A concise introduction in the field is made in this mini-review, which is aimed at providing a comprehensive picture with respect to the current accuracy level reached by NMR crystallography in the characterization of hydrogen-mediated noncovalent interactions in organic solids. Different types of practical applications are illustrated with the example of molecular crystals studied by our research group, but references to other representative developments reported in the literature are also made. By summarizing the major concepts and methodological progresses, the present work is also intended to be a guide to the practical potential of this relatively recent analytical tool for the scientists working in areas where crystal engineering represents the main approach for rational design of novel materials.

Crystal structures of the anhydrous and two solvated forms of methyl 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-6-methyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-5-carboxylate

Methyl 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-6-methyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-5-carboxylate, (I), was found to exhibit solvatomorphism. The compound was prepared using a classic Biginelli reaction under mild conditions, without using catalysts and in a solvent-free environment. Single crystals of two solvatomorphs and one anhydrous form of (I) were obtained through various crystallization methods. The anhydrous form, C₁₃H₁₃FN₂O₃, was found to crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c. It showed one molecule in the asymmetric unit. The solvatomorph with included carbon tetrachloride, C₁₃H₁₃FN₂O₃·0.25CCl₄, was found to crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2/n. The asymmetric unit revealed two molecules of (I) and one disordered carbon tetrachloride solvent molecule that lies on a twofold axis. A solvatomorph including ethyl acetate, C₁₃H₁₃FN₂O₃·0.5C₄H₈O₂, was found to crystallize in the triclinic space group P-1 with one molecule of (I) and one solvent molecule on an inversion centre in the asymmetric unit. The solvent molecules in the solvatomorphs were found to be disordered, with a unique case of crystallographically induced disorder in (I) crystallized with ethyl acetate. Hydrogen-bonding interactions, for example, N-H...O=C, C-H...O=C, C-H...F and C-H...π, contribute to the crystal packing with the formation of a characteristic dimer through N-H...O=C interactions in all three forms. The solvatomorphs display additional interactions, such as C-F...N and C-Cl...π, which are responsible for their molecular arrangement. The thermal properties of the forms were analysed through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), hot stage microscopy (HSM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) experiments.

Enhancing chemical stability of tetranitro biimidazole-based energetic materials through co-crystallization

Co-crystallization technology was employed as a way of solving two problems hampering the usefulness of 4,4′,5,5′-tetranitro-2,2′biimidazole (TNBI) as a viable energetic material, namely hygroscopicity and corrosiveness (high acidity). Co-crystal screening was carried out with 15 co-formers containing nitrogen or oxygen as the primary hydrogen-bond acceptor site. Formation of co-crystals was confirmed by IR spectroscopy and DSC, and suitable co-crystals were then analysed via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In each case, the formation of a co-crystal was driven by the formation of multiple N–H···N or N–H···O hydrogen bonds between TNBI and the co-former. The N-oxide based acceptors produce better energetic materials due to a more optimal oxygen balance. Hygroscopicity evaluations and corrosion tests revealed that the unavailability of N–H protons in the co-crystals of TNBI reduce hygroscopicity and suppress the chemical acidity of the free parent compound thereby making it substantially easier to handle, store, and transport.

Solid-Phase Radical Polymerization of Halogen-Bond-Based Crystals and Applications to Pre-Shaped Polymer Materials

Liquid vinyl monomers were converted into solid crystals via halogen bonding. They underwent solid-phase radical polymerizations through heating at 40 °C or ultraviolet photo-irradiation (365 nm). The X-ray crystallography analysis showed the high degree of monomer alignment in the crystals. The polymerizations of the solid monomer crystals yielded polymers with high molecular weights and relatively low dispersities because of the high degree of the monomer alignment in the crystal. As a unique application of this system, the crystalized monomers were assembled to pre-determined structures, followed by solid-phase polymerization, to obtain a two-layer polymer sheet and a three-dimensional house-shaped polymer material. The two-layer sheet contained a unique asymmetric pore structure and exhibited a solvent-responsive shape memory property and may find applications to asymmetric membranes and polymer actuators.

Morpholino-Substituted BODIPY Species: Synthesis, Structure and Electrochemical Studies

Functionalization of 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) chromophores at the 2,6-positions with iodo substituents and morpholino-substituted α-methyl groups affords molecules with strong absorbance in the visible spectrum. The effect of such substitution on the solid-state arrangements, absorption, fluorescence and electronic properties of these dye molecules is reported. The spectroscopic and spectroelectrochemical measurements display intense absorptions in the UV-visible spectrum with bathochromic shifts, in comparison to unfunctionalized BODIPY, and a positive shift in redox potentials due to functionalisation of the BODIPY core. Halogen bonds are observed in the solid-state structures of both halogenated BODIPY species, which in one case leads to the formation of an unusual halogen bonded framework.

The first two examples of halogen bonding with a sigma hole-donating fluorine in the Csp3-FOsp3 interaction from polyfluorinated trans-dihalo-palladium(ii) di-substituted pyridine complexes

The first two examples of halogen bonding in the Csp3-FOsp3 interaction have been both experimentally and theoretically proved for trans-[PdX2(3-HCF2CF2CH2OCH2py)2] complexes where X = Cl and Br. Both metal complexes with a Csp3-FOsp3 halogen bond have a σ hole donating fluorine.

Mechanochemical Preparations of Anion Coordinated Architectures Based on 3-Iodoethynylpyridine and 3-Iodoethynylbenzoic Acid

The halogen bond has previously been explored as a versatile tool in crystal engineering and anion coordination chemistry, with mechanochemical synthetic techniques having been shown to provide convenient routes towards cocrystals. In an effort to expand our knowledge on the role of halogen bonding in anion coordination, here we explore a series of cocrystals formed between 3-iodoethynylpyridine and 3-iodoethynylbenzoic acid with halide salts. In total, we report the single-crystal X-ray structures of six new cocrystals prepared by mechanochemical ball milling, with all structures exhibiting C≡C-I⋅⋅⋅X- (X=Cl, Br) halogen bonds. Whereas cocrystals featuring a pyridine group favoured the formation of discrete entities, cocrystals featuring a benzoic acid group yielded an alternation of halogen and hydrogen bonds. The compounds studied herein were further characterized by 13C and 31P solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, with the chemical shifts offering a clear and convenient method of identifying the occurrence of halogen bonding, using the crude product obtained directly from the mechanochemical ball milling. Whereas the 31P chemical shifts were quickly able to identify the occurrence of cocrystallization, 13C solid-state NMR was diagnostic of both the occurrence of halogen bonding and of hydrogen bonding.

One-dimensional single-helix coordination polymer self-assembled by a crown-ether appended-N-heteroacene radical anion

A crown-ether appended N-heteroacene 1 was reduced in the presence of NaBPh₄ to the radical anion 2 by accepting one electron transferred from both the cathode and BPh₄^- as a reductant. The obtained radical anion 2 can function as a radical anion ligand to bridge two sodium ions to self-assemble into one-dimensional helical coordination polymers.

Mining predicted crystal structure landscapes with high throughput crystallisation: old molecules, new insights

New crystal forms of two well-studied organic molecules are identified in a computationally targeted way, by combining structure prediction with a robotic crystallisation screen, including a ‘hidden’ porous polymorph of trimesic acid.

Organic molecules tend to close pack to form dense structures when they are crystallised from organic solvents. Porous molecular crystals defy this rule: they contain open space, which is typically stabilised by inclusion of solvent in the interconnected pores during crystallisation. The design and discovery of such structures is often challenging and time consuming, in part because it is difficult to predict solvent effects on crystal form stability. Here, we combine crystal structure prediction (CSP) with a robotic crystallisation screen to accelerate the discovery of stable hydrogen-bonded frameworks. We exemplify this strategy by finding new phases of two well-studied molecules in a computationally targeted way. Specifically, we find a new ‘hidden’ porous polymorph of trimesic acid, δ-TMA, that has a guest-free hexagonal pore structure, as well as three new solvent-stabilized diamondoid frameworks of adamantane-1,3,5,7-tetracarboxylic acid (ADTA). Beyond porous solids, this hybrid computational–experimental approach could be applied to a wide range of materials problems, such as organic electronics and drug formulation.
