Abstract
Current biomedical imaging techniques are crucial for the diagnosis of various diseases. Each imaging technique uses specific probes that, although each one has its own merits, do not encompass all the functionalities required for comprehensive imaging (sensitivity, non-invasiveness, etc.). Bimodal imaging methods are therefore rapidly becoming an important topic in advanced healthcare. This bimodality can be achieved by successive image acquisitions involving different and independent probes, one for each mode, with the risk of artifacts. It can be also achieved simultaneously by using a single probe combining a complete set of physical and chemical characteristics, in order to record complementary views of the same biological object at the same time. In this scenario, and focusing on bimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and optical imaging (OI), probes can be engineered by the attachment, more or less covalently, of a contrast agent (CA) to an organic or inorganic dye, or by designing single objects containing both the optical emitter and MRI-active dipole. If in the first type of system, there is frequent concern that at some point the dye may dissociate from the magnetic dipole, it may not in the second type. This review aims to present a summary of current activity relating to this kind of dual probes, with a special emphasis on lanthanide-based luminescent nano-objects.

Abstract
Asymmetrical and dissymmetrical structures are widespread and play a critical role in nature and life systems. In the field of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, it is still in its infancy for constructing artificial architectures using dissymmetrical building blocks. Herein, we report the self-assembly of supramolecular systems based on two dissymmetrical double-layered ligands. With the aid of ultra-high-vacuum, low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-LT-STM), we were able to investigate four isomeric structures corresponding to four types of binding modes of ligand LA with two major conformations complexes A. The distribution of isomers measured by STM and total binding energy of each isomer obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the most abundant isomer could be the most stable one with highest total binding energy. Finally, through shortening the linker between inner and outer layers and the length of arms, the arrangement of dissymmetrical ligand LB could be controlled within one binding mode corresponding to the single conformation for complexes B.

Abstract
The strength and toughness are two trade-off properties of a material, yet Nature can achieve strong and tough materials by introducing sacrificial bonds into a system. Here, we present a four-component multiblock copolymer (mBCP) approach toward strong and tough elastic fibers, by introducing terpyridine moieties into poly(ether ester) mBCP elastomers. After coordination with Fe(II), supramolecular cross-links are formed within the physically cross-linked thermoplastic elastomers. The toughening elastic fibers with a double-cross-linked network structure show high tensile strength (ca. 300 MPa) and toughness (ca. 100 MJ m-3). In addition, they display excellent resilience with enhanced self-healing properties. Our strategy provides a promising way for the development of strong and tough elastomers by introducing metal-ligand sacrificial bonds into mBCPs elastomers.

Abstract
A heterobimetallic supramolecular polymer (polyRuFe) with alternately complexed Ru(II) and Fe(II) is prepared following a stepwise synthetic route through harnessing first the strongly binding metal ion Ru(II) and then the weakly binding metal ion Fe(II). A high yield of product is achieved in each step. The heterometal ions are incorporated into the polymer chain in identical coordination environments formed by two 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine moieties. Characterization is accomplished by NMR spectroscopy, MALDI–TOF mass spectrometry, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. PolyRuFe shows a wide optical window (λ = 311–577 nm) and a broad distinct reversible redox nature of two types, originated from the coupling of the two heterometallic segments into the polymer chain. Such characteristics of polyRuFe suggest its potential for various electrochemical and electro-optical applications.

Abstract
Abstract
A dinuclear and a tetranuclear complex of lead(II) with the pincer-type ligand 4′-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (Cl-Ph-tpy), [Pb2(Cl-Ph-tpy)2(μ-I)2I2] (1) and [Pb4(Cl-Ph-tpy)4(μ-Br)4(μ-OH2)Br4]·2CH3OH (2), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the binuclear structure of 1, the Pb atom has a hemidirected PbN3I3 environment with a Pb(μ-I)2Pb central unit. In the tetranuclear structure of 2, two crystallographically independent Pb(II) centres having hemidirected PbN3Br3 and PbN3OBr2 environments are connected to Pb(μ-Br)Pb(μ-Br)2(μ-OH2)Pb(μ-Br)Pb chains. The supramolecular features in 1 and 2 are supported through weak but directional C–H···Cl, C–H···I and C–H···Br, C–H···O, O–H···Br, and O···Br interactions and aromatic π-π stacking.

Abstract
2,2':6',2″-Terpyridine (tpy) is a versatile moiety used in the construction of small novel molecules or polymers. Extending or coupling tpy with π-conjugation structures can result in interesting optoelectronic properties. This mini-review summarizes the significant progress made over the past decades in the study of tpy-containing π-conjugated polymers and their application in light-emitting and photovoltaic materials. When coordinated with metal ions, tpy exhibits immense potential for the synthesis of metallo-supramolecular or metallo-polymer materials. Therefore, tpy-based metallo-polymers are the primary focus of this study. Selected examples will be reviewed with a special emphasis on the properties of these functional systems, which can consequently help further their application in light-to-electricity or electricity-to-light conversion fields.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of 4'-(4-n-octyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (8) and 4'-(4-n-nonyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (9) are reported. The single crystal structures of 4'-(4-n-hexyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (6), 4'-(4-n-heptyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (7), and compounds 8 and 9 have been determined. The conformation of the 3,2':6',3″-tpy unit is trans, trans in 6 and 7, but switches to cis, trans in 8 and 9. This is associated with significant changes in the packing interactions with a more dominant role for van der Waals interactions between adjacent n-alkyloxy chains and C-Hmethylene... π interactions in 8 and 9. The solid-state structures of 6 and 7 with the n-hexyloxy and n-heptyloxy chains feature interwoven sheets of supramolecular assemblies of molecules, with pairs of n-alkyloxy chains threaded through cavities in an adjacent sheet.

Abstract
Self-healing ability is an important survival feature in nature, with which living beings can spontaneously repair damage when wounded. Inspired by nature, people have designed and synthesized many self-healing materials by encapsulating healing agents or incorporating reversible covalent bonds or noncovalent interactions into a polymer matrix. Among the noncovalent interactions, the coordination bond is demonstrated to be effective for constructing highly efficient self-healing polymers. Moreover, with the presence of functional metal ions or ligands and dynamic metal-ligand bonds, self-healing polymers can show various functions such as dielectrics, luminescence, magnetism, catalysis, stimuli-responsiveness, and shape-memory behavior. Herein, the recent developments and achievements made in the field of self-healing polymers based on coordination bonds are presented. The advantages of coordination bonds in constructing self-healing polymers are highlighted, the various metal-ligand bonds being utilized in self-healing polymers are summarized, and examples of functional self-healing polymers originating from metal-ligand interactions are given. Finally, a perspective is included addressing the promises and challenges for the future development of self-healing polymers based on coordination bonds.

Abstract
Coordination-driven self-assembly has been extensively employed to construct a variety of discrete structures as a bottom-up strategy. However, mechanistic understanding regarding whether self-assembly is under kinetic or thermodynamic control is less explored. To date, such mechanistic investigation has been limited to distinct, assembled structures. It still remains a formidable challenge to study the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior of self-assembly systems with multiple assembled isomers due to the lack of characterization methods. Herein, we use a stepwise strategy which combined self-recognition and self-assembly processes to construct giant metallo-supramolecules with 8 positional isomers in solution. With the help of ultrahigh-vacuum, low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we were able to unambiguously differentiate 14 isomers on the substrate which correspond to 8 isomers in solution. Through measurement of 162 structures, the experimental probability of each isomer was obtained and compared with the theoretical probability. Such a comparison along with density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggested that although both kinetic and thermodynamic control existed in this self-assembly, the increased experimental probabilities of isomers compared to theoretical probabilities should be attributed to thermodynamic control.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of 4'-(4-n-propoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine is described. Five 2D-coordination networks have been isolated by crystal growth at room temperature from reactions of Co(NCS)2 with 4'-(4-n-alkyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridines in which the n-alkyl group is ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n-pentyl and n-hexyl in ligands 2-6, respectively. The single-crystal structures of [{Co(2)2(NCS)2}.0.6CHCl3]n, [{Co(3)2(NCS)2}.4CHCl3.0.25H2O]n, [{Co(4)2(NCS)2}.4CHCl3]n, [Co2(5)4(NCS)4]n and [Co(6)2(NCS)2]n have been determined, and powder X-ray diffraction has demonstrated that the single-crystal structures are representative of the bulk materials. Each compound possesses a (4,4) net with Co centres as 4-connecting nodes. For the assemblies containing 2, 3 and 4, the (4,4) net comprises two geometrically different rhombuses, and the nets pack in an ABAB... arrangement with cone-like arrangements of n-alkyloxyphenyl groups being accommodated in a similar unit in an adjacent net. An increase in the n-alkyloxy chain length has two consequences: there is a change in the conformation of the 3,2':6',3″-tpy metal-binding domain, and the (4,4) net comprises identical rhombuses. Similarities and differences between the assemblies with ligands 2-6 and the previously reported [{Co(1)2(NCS)2}.3MeOH]n and [{Co(1)2(NCS)2}.2.2CHCl3]n in which 1 is 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine are discussed. The results demonstrate the effects of combining a variable chain length in the 4'-(4-n-alkyloxyphenyl) substituents of 3,2':6',3″-tpy and a conformationally flexible 3,2':6',3″-tpy metal-binding domain.

Abstract
Six zinc(II) complexes, [Zn(OCOPh)2LR] (R = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) were synthesized by the reaction of zinc benzoate and six para-substituted 4-phenyl-terpyridine complexes and their structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H NMR and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. Their photoluminescent properties in solid and in solutions of DMSO were studied. Three human cancer cell lines were used for antiproliferative potential: human lung cancer cell line (A549), human esophageal cancer cell line (Eca-109) and human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). The results have shown that these zinc complexes have good inhibitory effects on cancer cells, which are better than that of the commonly used clinical drug cisplatin. The ability of the complexes to binding to CT-DNA was studied by UV spectroscopy and fluorescence titration, while the interaction between the complexes and CT-DNA, AT6, GC6 short-chain DNA sequences and G-quadruplex were analyzed by circular dichroism (CD). It is found that these complexes can bind to DNA, and the binding mode is mainly intercalator. The docking of the complexes with the DNA fragment was simulated using molecular docking software. All the results clearly display that the substituents at these ligands of the complexes have the substitution effects on the properties of photoluminescence, antiproliferative potential and DNA binding study.

Abstract
In coordination-driven self-assembly, 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) has gained extensive attention in constructing supramolecular architectures on the basis of ⟨tpy-M-tpy⟩ connectivity. In direct self-assembly of large discrete structures, however, the metal ions were mainly limited to Cd(II), Zn(II), and Fe(II) ions. Herein, we significantly broaden the spectrum of metal ions with seven divalent transition metal ions M(II) (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd) to assemble a series of supramolecular fractals. In particular, Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) were reported for the first time to form such large and discrete structures with ⟨tpy-M-tpy⟩ connectivity. In addition, the structural stabilities of those supramolecules in the gas phase and the kinetics of the ligand exchange process in solution were investigated using mass spectrometry. Such a fundamental study gave the relative order of structural stability in the gas phase and revealed the inertness of coordination in solution depending on the metal ions. Those results would guide the future study in tpy-based supramolecular chemistry in terms of self-assembly, characterization, property, and application.

Abstract
A novel metal-organic ligand (MOL 2) has been prepared by linking two V-shaped bis-terpyridines with one X-shaped tetrakis-terpyridine through the stable <tpy-Ru2+-tpy> connectivity. The complexation between MOL 2, X-shaped tetrakis-terpyridine, and Zn2+ gave rise to a supramolecular C6-symmetrical six-pointed star quantitatively. In addition, a mixture of MOL 2, K-shaped tetrakis-terpyridine, and Zn2+ afforded a C2-symmetrical four-pointed star. These metallo-supramolecular architectures were adequately characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, and TEM analyses.

Abstract
The synthesis of an enediyne molecule functionlized with different metal coordination sites in a cross-π-conjugated fashion is reported. Using Pd-mediated cross-coupling reactions, 2,2′-bipyridine units were attached at the periphery of diazafluorenemethylidene to obtain a multitopic ligand. UV-vis spectrosopic investigations along with electrochemical analyses reveal electronic communication along the conjugated path reflected in red-shifted absorption spectra and shifts of reduction potentials. The properties of the ligand could be manipulated by coordinating [Ru(bpy)2]2+ fragments at all three coordination spheres of the molecule while the different complexing imine moieties serve as possible coordination sites for various metal centres. Synthesis and structural characterization of a geminal enediyne molecule with three imine metal binding sites based on diazafluorenemethylidene in a cross-π-conjugated fashion is reported.![]()

Abstract
The syntheses of 4'-substituted chiral 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands with predetermined configurations and directionalities are rather limited in the supramolecular chemistry field. In this study, a carbazole-linked ditopic chiral ligand L was synthesized using 4'-bromo-substituted pineno-fused tpy 5 as the precursor. Upon complexation with Cd(NO3)2·4H2O and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, two enantiomerically pure metallosupramolecules, [Cd3L3] and [Zn4L4], have been self-assembled and characterized by NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, traveling wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry, and DOSY analysis. In addition, their optical properties are characterized by UV-vis, fluorescence, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence, suggesting an efficiency transmission and amplification of chirality from the ligand to metal center via self-assembly.

Reactions of 1 and 2 with cobalt(II) thiocyanate under conditions of crystal growth at room temperature result in the formation of [{Co(1)(NCS)2}·MeOH·3CHCl3]n and [{Co(2)(NCS)2}·0.8MeOH·1.8CHCl3]n. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that each crystal lattice consists of a trinodal self-penetrating (62.84)(64.82)(65.8)2 net. The nodes are defined by two independent cobalt centres and the centroids of two crystallographically independent ligands which are topologically equivalent.

Abstract
Two platinum(II) coordination compounds, [PtCl(4'-R1-terpy)](SO3CF3) (1) and [PtCl(4'-R2-terpy)](SO3CF3) (2), with 4'-(2-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (4'-R1-terpy) or 4'-(3-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (4'-R2-terpy) were synthesized and the impact of the pendant pyridyl ring on the structure and cytotoxic activity of Pt(II)-terpyridine complexes was explored. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed square planar coordination of the cations [PtCl(4'-Rn-terpy)]+. The mode of binding of 1 and 2 to calf thymus DNA was examined by UV-Vis absorption titration, ethidium displacement assay and reaction with 9-ethylguanine, and the mixed covalent-intercalative mode was demonstrated. The cytotoxicity of the Pt(II) complexes against six cancer cell lines and three normal ones was determined using MTS (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium) assay and compared to cisplatin. The IC50 values for the compound 2 towards the cancer cell lines are in the low micromolar range. Most remarkably, 2 was over 4 times more effective than 1 and cisplatin against non-small lung adenocarcinoma (A549), and its selectivity index was ~60-80 times higher than that for 1 and cisplatin. The mechanisms underlying the loss of viability under treatment of 2 was further investigated including F-actin staining, mitotic index analysis, cytometric cell cycle analysis, Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) -conjugated Annexin V antibody and propidium iodide (PI) staining, measurements of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells, analysis of changes in the mitochondrial mass and potential and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) genes analysis. The compound 2 was found to have a pro-oxidative effect by strong stimulation of cells for the production of reactive oxygen species and cytostatic effect through cell cycle arrest.

Abstract
Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) related (supra)molecules have been intensively investigated due to their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect based on the restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR). Meanwhile, boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) tends to emit intense fluorescence with high quantum yields. Herein, we combined TPE, BODIPY and terpyridine (TPY) into one system to study the emissive behaviour of organic building block as well as a self-assembled metallo-supramolecule. The TPY and BODIPY substituents with bulky sizes provide strong hindrance to restrict the rotation of the phenyl groups on TPE, leading to enhancement of emissive properties in both solution and aggregation states. Furthermore, the BODIPY-TPE-TPY ligand (L) was assembled with Zn (II) through coordination-driven self-assembly to form a cyclic dimer (D) with typical AIE characteristics.

Abstract
RuII complexes based on functionalized 2,6-di(quinolin-8-yl)pyridine (dqp) ligands feature excellent photophysical and geometrical properties, thus suggesting dqp ligands as ideal surrogates for 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy). However, the synthesis of multifunctionalized [Ru(dqp)2]2+-based complexes is often low-yielding, which has hampered their practical value to date. In this study, a universal high-yielding route was explored and corroborated by a mechanistic investigation based on 1H NMR, MS, and density functional theory. With application of high-boiling but less-coordinating solvents (i.e., DMF) during the coordination of dqp by the precursor [Ru(dqp)(MeCN)3]2+, the required reaction temperature is lowered considerably (by 30 °C). In comparison to tpy, the reaction rate for dqp is further reduced which is assigned to the higher steric demand upon the coordination process. Namely, the onset of coordination of a tpy derivative at 60 °C and of dqp at 90 °C is significantly milder than in previous protocols. The versatility of the procedure is demonstrated by the high-yielding syntheses of multifunctionalized RuII complexes reaching up to 90%, whereby the presence of hydroxyl groups and losses during purification may lower the isolated yields substantially. In addition, the same strategy of high-boiling but less-coordinating solvents enabled a milder one-pot protocol to prepare [Ru(dqp)2]2+ from a [Ru(MeCN)6]2+ source, i.e., without the need for in situ reduction or halide abstraction as typical for RuIIICl3 hydrate. Hence, the developed protocol benefits from an improved thermal tolerance of sensitive functional groups, which may be applicable also to related polypyridyl-type ligands.

Abstract
Since the initial report by Lehn et al. in 1979, ruthenium tris(bipyridine) ([Ru(bpy)3]2+) and its numerous derivatives were applied as photosensitizers (PSs) in a large panel of photocatalytic conditions while the bis(terpyridine) analogues were disregarded because of their low quantum yields and short excited-state lifetimes. In this study, we prepared a new terpyridine ligand, 4'-(4-bromophenyl)-4,4‴:4″,4‴'-dipyridinyl- 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Bipytpy) and used it to prepare the heteroleptic complex [Ru(Tolyltpy)(Bipytpy)](PF6)2 (1; Tolyltpy = 4'-tolyl-2,2':6',2'-terpyridine). Complex 1 exhibits enhanced photophysical properties with a higher quantum yield (7.4 × 10-4) and a longer excited-state lifetime (3.8 ns) compared to those of [Ru(Tolyltpy)2](PF6)2 (3 × 10-5 and 0.74 ns, respectively). These enhanced photophysical characteristics and the potential for PS-catalyst interaction through the peripheral pyridines led us to apply the complex for visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution. The photocatalytic system based on 1 as the PS, triethanolamine as a sacrificial donor, and cobaloxime as a catalyst exhibits sustained activity over more than 10 days under blue-light irradiation (light-emitting diode centered at 450 nm). A maximum turnover number of 764 was obtained after 12 days.

Abstract
In this study, we newly designed and developed a synthesis route based on the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the derivatives of 4'-(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine with various (hetero)aryl substituents, differing in electronic character, on a triazol ring. The obtained compounds were comprehensively characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrochemical and thermal studies. Moreover, preliminary biological tests were conducted. The investigation allowed the selection of materials with the most promising properties with particular emphasis on the nature of the substituents. In addition, theoretical studies (DFT and TD-DFT) were performed to verify the comprehensive understanding of experimental results.

Abstract
A supramolecular strategy of switching the self-assembly of cyclic peptide-polymer conjugates using host-guest chemistry is proposed. The formation of tubular supramolecular polymers based on cyclic peptide-polymer conjugates can be controlled by reversibly attaching cucurbit[7]uril onto the cyclic peptide via host-guest interactions.

Abstract
The intricate discrete supramolecular architectures via two or more noncovalent interactions are very attractive for chemists. In this paper, a series of homomeric metallo-supramolecular lemniscates were prepared in nearly quantitative yields by assembling either dialkylammonium salt- or benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7)-containing terpyridyl metallo-organic ligands with Zn2+. Furthermore, the heteromeric analogue could be obtained through two ways: (1) the cooperative interaction of coordination-driven self-assembly and host-guest recognition and (2) the transformation from homodimers to heterodimers driven by host-guest interaction. These supramolecules were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and two-dimensional (2D) ion-mobility mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Polystyrene-b-polyethylene glycol (PS-b-PEG) amphiphilic block copolymers featuring a terminal tridentate N,N,N-ligand (terpyridine) were synthesized for the first time through an efficient route. In this approach, telechelic chain-end modified polystyrenes were produced via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization by using terpyridine trithiocarbonate as the chain-transfer agent, after which the hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) block was incorporated into the hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) block in high yields via a thiol-ene process. Following metal-coordination with Mn2+, Fe2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+, the resulting metallo-polymers were self-assembled into spherical, vesicular nanostructures, as characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging.
