Abstract
The application of ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in medicine finds its rapidly developing emphasis on heating mediators for magnetic hyperthermia, the ever-promising "fourth leg" of cancer treatment. Usage of MNPs depends largely on the preparation processes to select optimal conditions and effective routes to finely tailor MNPs. Microwave heating, instead of conventional heating offers nanocrystals at significantly enhanced rate and yield. In this work, a facile mass-production microwave hydrothermal synthetic approach was used to synthesize stable ferromagnetic manganese and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with sizes smaller than 14 nm from metal acetylacetonates in the presence of octadecylamine. Prolonging the reaction time from 15 to 60 min, led to ferrites with improved crystallinity while the sizes are slight increased. The high crystallinity magnetic nanoparticles showed exceptional magnetic heating parameters. In vitro application was performed using the human osteosarcoma cell line Saos-2 incubated with manganese ferrite nanoparticles. Hyperthermia applied in a two cycle process, while AC magnetic field remained on until the upper limit of 45 °C was achieved. The comparative results of the AC hyperthermia efficiency of ferrite nanoparticles in combination with the in vitro study coincide with the magnetic features and their tunability may be further exploited for AC magnetic hyperthermia driven applications.

Abstract
Metal or metal oxides/carbon nanocomposites with hierarchical superstructures have become one of the most promising functional materials in sensor, catalysis, energy conversion, etc. In this work, novel hierarchical Fe3O4/carbon superstructures have been fabricated based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived method. Three kinds of Fe-MOFs (MIL-88A) with different morphologies were prepared beforehand as templates, and then pyrolyzed to fabricate the corresponding novel hierarchical Fe3O4/carbon superstructures. The systematic studies on the thermal decomposition process of the three kinds of MIL-88A and the effect of template morphology on the products were carried out in detail. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermal analysis were employed to investigate the hierarchical Fe3O4/carbon superstructures. Based on these resulted hierarchical Fe3O4/carbon superstructures, a novel and sensitive nonenzymatic N-acetyl cysteine sensor was developed. The porous and hierarchical superstructures and large surface area of the as-formed Fe3O4/carbon superstructures eventually contributed to the good electrocatalytic activity of the prepared sensor towards the oxidation of N-acetyl cysteine. The proposed preparation method of the hierarchical Fe3O4/carbon superstructures is simple, efficient, cheap and easy to mass production. It might open up a new way for hierarchical superstructures preparation.

Abstract
Rattle-type porous carbon microcapsules (RPCMs) were deliberately designed to combine multiple functions with the aim of improving the applicability of amorphous carbon in a synergistic fashion. A movable Fe3O4 nanocluster coated with porous carbon is encapsulated in the cavity of a carbon microcapsule with an eggshell-like characteristic, allowing for storage, adsorption, and exchange of matters through the mesoporous channels of the carbon layer. The synthetic strategy of RPCMs is flexible and universal, involving the constitution and carbonization of Fe3O4@PF@PS@PF template particles. This results in a double carbon shell and a sandwiched hollow cavity with a movable magnetic core. There is evidence that RPCMs possess large surface areas, hierarchical pore sizes, hydrophobicity, and magnetic responsiveness. Hence, diverse applications have been investigated. It is proved that RPCMs exhibit excellent performance in the effective enrichment of peptides/proteins. The detection limit toward peptides could reach as low as 10 nM, and the enrichment capacity toward MYO protein is as high as 410 mg/g (protein/beads). Furthermore, RPCMs are able to harvest proteins in complex real samples such as fetal bovine serum and rabbit blood. In addition, RPCMs could be fabricated in a supercapacitor electrode and display outstanding energy-storage performance. The electrochemical measurements demonstrate that RPCM-based electrodes have a specific capacitance of as high as 216 F/g (0.1 A/g), long-term cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 92.4% over 1000 cycles (0.2 A/g), and good electronic conductivity.

Abstract
Cooperative self-assembly of block copolymers with (in)organic precursors effectively generates ordered nanoporous films, but the porosity is typically limited by the need for a continuous (in)organic phase. Here, a network of homogeneous fibrous nanostructures (≈20 nm diameter cylinders) having high porosity (≈ 60%) is fabricated by cooperative self-assembly of a phenolic resin oligomer (resol) with a novel, nonfrustrated, ABC amphiphilic triblock copolymer template, poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(ethyl acrylate)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PEA-b-PS), via a thermally induced self-assembly process. Due to the high glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PS segments, the self-assembly behavior is kinetically hindered as a result of competing effects associated with the ordering of the self-assembled system and the cross-linking of resol that suppresses segmental mobility. The balance in these competing processes reproducibly yields a disordered fibril network with a uniform fibril diameter. This nonequilibrium morphology is dependent on the PEO-b-PEA-b-PS to resol ratio with an evolution from a relatively open fibrous structure to an apparent poorly ordered mixed lamellae-cylinder morphology. Pyrolysis of these former films at elevated temperatures yields a highly porous carbon film with the fibril morphology preserved through the carbonization process. These results illustrate a simple method to fabricate thin films and coatings with a well-defined fiber network that could be promising materials for energy and separation applications.

Abstract
Dispersible, highly graphitic, and nitrogen-doped carbon hollow nanospheres (25-90 nm), termed 'nanobubbles', are prepared via confined carbonization through a silica nanocasting technique. Poly(ionic liquid) nanoparticles are employed as easy-to-make and multifunctional templates, which simultaneously act as both the carbon and nitrogen source. The promising potential of the nanobubbles in oxygen reduction reactions for fuel cells is demonstrated.

Abstract
The structure of ordered mesoporous carbons fabricated using poly(styrene-block-N,N,-dimethyl-n-octadecylamine p-styrenesulfonate) (PS-b-PSS-DMODA) as the template and phenolic resin (resol) as the carbon source can be easily manipulated by inclusion of low concentrations of low volatility selective solvents in the casting solution. Casting from neat methyl ethyl ketone yields a disordered structure even upon thermal annealing. However, addition of both dioctyl phthalate (DOP, PS selective) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, resol and PSS-DMODA selective) at modest concentrations to this casting solution provides sufficient mobility to produce highly ordered films with cylindrical mesopores. The DOP acts to swell the hydrophobic domain and can more than double the mesopore size, while the DMSO acts to swell the resol phase. Moreover, the surface area of the mesoporous carbons increases significantly as the meosopore size increases. This is a result of the decrease in wall thickness, which can be ascertained by the constant d-spacing of the mesostructure as the pore size increases. This behavior is counter to the typical effect of pore swelling agents that increase the pore size and decrease the surface area. Moreover, with only 4 wt % DOP/DMSO in the solution (20 wt % relative to solids), the scattering profiles exhibit many orders of diffraction, even upon carbonization, which is not typically observed for soft templated films. Variation in the concentration of DOP and DMSO during casting enables facile tuning of the structure of mesoporous carbon films.

Abstract
The synergistic adsorption of heavy metal ions and humic acid can be very challenging. This is largely because of their competitive adsorption onto most adsorbent materials. Hierarchically structured composites containing polyethylenimine-modified magnetic mesoporous silica and graphene oxide (MMSP-GO) were here prepared to address this. Magnetic mesoporous silica microspheres were synthesized and functionalized with PEI molecules, providing many amine groups for chemical conjugation with the carboxyl groups on GO sheets and enhanced the affinity between the pollutants and the mesoporous silica. The features of the composites were characterized using TEM, SEM, TGA, DLS, and VSM measurements. Series adsorption results proved that this system was suitable for simultaneous and efficient removal of heavy metal ions and humic acid using MMSP-GO composites as adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacities of MMSP-GO for Pb(II) and Cd (II) were 333 and 167 mg g−1 caculated by Langmuir model, respectively. HA enhances adsorption of heavy metals by MMSP-GO composites due to their interactions in aqueous solutions. The underlying mechanism of synergistic adsorption of heavy metal ions and humic acid were discussed. MMSP-GO composites have shown promise for use as adsorbents in the simultaneous removal of heavy metals and humic acid in wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract
A hydrothermal technique to simultaneously remove a SiO2 template and crystallize a TiO2 outer layer was used to create magnetically separable, hollow rattle-type nanoparticles consisting of a magnetic Fe3O4 core contained within a hollow TiO2 shell. Fe3O4 cores approximately 240 nm in diameter were synthesized, subsequently coated by SiO2 and finally coated with TiO2. This was followed by a hydrothermal treatment to selectively etch the silica, resulting in rattle-type particles with a final outer shell diameter of approximately 390 nm. The product of hydrothermal treatment were rattle-type particles with increased crystallinity and a 68% increase in surface area. Characterization confirmed the ability to etch a hard SiO2 template through use of a simple and benign thermal treatment with pure water, while simultaneously introducing a crystalline phase into the TiO2 active layer. The potential of the particles to be employed as a catalyst in UV induced advanced water treatment for removal of organic contaminants was evaluated through a colorimetric photocatalytic degradation assay using methylene blue as a model contaminant. The ability of the particles to be magnetically separated from solution after treatment and recycled for consecutive treatment cycles was then demonstrated. This technique for selectively removing a hard SiO2 template while simultaneously crystallizing a TiO2 shell avoids the use of hazardous chemical etchants or complex processing, rendering the synthesis of hierarchical, multimaterial, hollow, porous rattle-type particles a simple, attractive, and environmentally friendly "one-pot" technique for potential industrial application.

Abstract
Ordered mesoporous (2-50 nm) carbon films were fabricated using cooperative self-assembly of a phenolic resin oligomer with a novel block copolymer template (poly(styrene-block-N,N-dimethyl-n-octadecylamine p-styrenesulfonate), (PS-b-PSS-DMODA)) synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Due to the high Tg of the PS segment and the strong interactions between the phenolic resin and the PSS-DMODA, the segmental rearrangement is kinetically hindered relative to the cross-linking rate of the phenolic resin, which inhibits long-range ordering and yields a poorly ordered mesoporous carbon with a broad pore size distribution. However, relatively short exposure (2 h) to controlled vapor pressures of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) yields significant improvements in the long-range ordering and narrows the pore size distribution. The average pore size increases as the solvent vapor pressure during annealing increases, but an upper limit of p/p0 = 0.85 exists above which the films dewet rapidly during solvent vapor annealing. This approach can be extended using mesityl oxide, which has similar solvent qualities to MEK, but is not easily removed by ambient air drying after solvent annealing. This residual solvent can impact the morphology that develops during cross-linking of the films. These results illustrate the ability to fine-tune the mesostructure of ordered mesoporous carbon films through simple changes in the processing without any compositional changes in the initial cast film.

Abstract
A magnetite-loaded mesocellular carbonaceous material, Fe(3)O(4)/MSU-F-C, exhibited superior activity as both a Fenton catalyst and an adsorbent for removal of phenol and arsenic, and strong magnetic property rendering it separable by simply applying magnetic field. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, the catalytic process by Fe(3)O(4)/MSU-F-C completely oxidized phenol and As(III) under the conditions where commercial iron oxides showed negligible effects. Notably, the decomposition of H(2)O(2) by Fe(3)O(4)/MSU-F-C was not faster than those by commercial iron oxides, indicating that hydroxyl radical produced via the catalytic process by Fe(3)O(4)/MSU-F-C was used more efficiently for the oxidation of target contaminants compared to the other iron oxides. The homogeneous Fenton reaction by the dissolved iron species eluted from Fe(3)O(4)/MSU-F-C was insignificant. At relatively high doses of Fe(3)O(4)/MSU-F-C, total concentration of arsenic decreased to a significant extent due to the adsorption of arsenic on the catalyst surface. The removal of arsenic by adsorption was found to proceed via preoxidation of As(III) into As(V) and the subsequent adsorption of As(V) onto the catalyst.

Abstract
High saturation magnetization monodisperse Fe(3)O(4) hollow microspheres (109.48 emu/g) with superparamagnetic property at room temperature are promptly synthesized by a one-step solvothermal process with the presence of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate as an additive. The as-synthesized products possess superparamagnetism, large cavity, high water solubility, and saturation magnetization at room temperature. In particular, these hollow microspheres exhibit both of a rather short separation time from industry wastewater and a high adsorption capacity about 180 mg/g at high Cr(VI) concentrations, which is much better than those of reported magnetite solid nanoparticles. In addition, the X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) show that the uptake of Cr(VI) into the spheres was mainly governed by a physicochemical process. The micelle-assisted Ostwald ripening process was proposed to explain the rapid formation of hollow structures by a series of control experiments. The as-manufactured products with the two advantages mentioned above serve as ideal candidates for environmental remediation materials.

Abstract
Mesoporous carbons containing cobalt nanoparticles are synthesized by tri-or quad-constituent self assembly of Pluronic F127, phenol-formaldehyde oligomer (resol), cobalt acetylacetonate (acac), and optionally tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS, optional). Upon pyrolysis in N(2) atmosphere, the resol provides sufficient carbon yield to maintain the ordered structure, while decomposition of the Co(acac) yields cobalt nanoparticles. To provide increased surface area, the dispersed silicate from condensation of TEOS can be etched after carbonization to yield micropores, Without silica templated micropores, the surface area decreases as the cobalt content increases, but there is a concurrent increase in the volume-average pore diameter (BHJ) and a dramatic increase in the adsorption capacity of methylene green with the equilibrium adsorption capacity from 2 to 90 mg/g with increasing Co content. Moreover, the surface area and pore size of mesoporous composites can be dramatically increased by addition of TEOS and subsequent etching. These composites exhibit extremely high adsorption capacity up to 1151 mg/g, which also increases with increases in the Co content. Additionally, the inclusion of cobalt nanoparticles provides magnetic separation from aqueous suspension. The in situ synthesis of the Co nanoparticles yields to a carbon shell that can partially protect the Co from leaching in acidic media; after 96 h in 2 M HCl, the powders remain magnetic.

Abstract
A contemporary question in the intensely active field of periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials is how large a silsesquioxane precursor can be self-assembled under template direction into the pore walls of an ordered mesostructure. An answer to this question is beginning to emerge with the ability to synthesize dendrimer, buckyball, and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane PMOs. In this paper, we further expand the library of large-scale silsesquioxane precursors by demonstrating that photoluminescent nanocrystalline silicon that has been surface-capped with oligo(triethoxysilylethylene), denoted as ncSi:(CH(2)CH(2)Si(OEt)(3))(n)H, can be self-assembled into a photoluminescent nanocrystalline silicon periodic mesoporous organosilica (ncSi-PMO). A comprehensive multianalytical characterization of the structural and optical properties of ncSi-PMO demonstrates that the material gainfully combines the photoluminescent properties of nanocrystalline silicon with the porous structure of the PMO. This integration of two functional components makes ncSi-PMO a promising multifunctional material for optoelectronic and biomedical applications.

Abstract
This review focuses on the synthesis and application of nanostructured composites containing magnetic nanostructures and carbon-based materials. Great progress in fabrication of magnetic carbon nanocomposites has been made by developing methods including filling process, template-based synthesis, chemical vapor deposition, hydrothermal/solvothermal method, pyrolysis procedure, sol-gel process, detonation induced reaction, self-assembly method, etc. The applications of magnetic carbon nanocomposites expanded to a wide range of fields such as environmental treatment, microwave absorption, magnetic recording media, electrochemical sensor, catalysis, separation/recognization of biomolecules and drug delivery are discussed. Finally, some future trends and perspectives in this research area are outlined.
