Facile Synthesis of the Dicyanophosphide Anion via Electrochemical Activation of White Phosphorus: An Avenue to Organophosphorus Compounds

Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) have gained tremendous interest in the past decades due to their wide applications ranging from synthetic chemistry to materials and biological sciences. We describe herein a practical and versatile approach for the transformation of white phosphorus (P₄) into useful OPCs with high P atom economy via a key bridging anion [P(CN)₂]^-. This anion can be prepared on a gram scale directly from P₄ through an electrochemical process. A variety of OPCs involving phosphinidenes, cyclophosphanes, and phospholides have been made readily accessible from P₄ in a two-step manner. Our approach has a significant impact on the future preparation of OPCs in laboratory and industrial settings.

Recent advances in the domain of Cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbenes

Isolation of cyclic (alkyl) amino carbenes (cAACs) in 2005 has been a major achievement in the field of stable carbenes due to their better electronic properties. cAACs and bicyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (BicAAC) in essence are the most electrophilic as well as nucleophilic carbenes are known till date. Due to their excellent electronic properties in terms of nucleophilic and electrophilic character, cAACs have been utilized in different areas of chemistry, including stabilization of low valent main group and transition metal species, activation of small molecules, and catalysis. The applications of cAACs in catalysis have opened up new avenues of research in the field of cAAC chemistry. This review summarizes the major results of cAAC chemistry published until August 2021.

Stable N-heterocyclic borylenes with promising ligand properties: a contribution from theory

DFT calculations reveal the power of ylides in stabilizing neutral singlet cyclic borylenes that are found to be capable of activating a variety of small molecules having enthalpically strong bonds.

Controlling Oxidative Addition and Reductive Elimination at Tin(I) via Hemi-Lability

We report on the synthesis of a distannyne supported by a pincer ligand bearing pendant amine donors that is capable of reversibly activating E-H bonds at one or both of the tin centres through dissociation of the hemi-labile N-Sn donor/acceptor interactions. This chemistry can be exploited to sequentially (and reversibly) assemble mixed-valence chains of tin atoms of the type ArSn{Sn(Ar)H}_n SnAr (n=1, 2). The experimentally observed (decreasing) propensity towards chain growth with increasing chain length can be rationalized both thermodynamically and kinetically by the electron- withdrawing properties of the -Sn(Ar)H- backbone units generated via oxidative addition.

σ0π2 Singlet Ground State Carbenes Undergo Least-Motion Reactions with H2 and Alkenes

Ground state singlet carbenes commonly feature σ²π⁰ orbital occupations and are known for their concerted σ-bond insertion and cycloaddition reactions. Despite the facility of these transformations, orbital symmetry conservation forces them into non-least-motion π-approach reaction pathways. This situation completely changes when the singlet σ⁰π² electron configuration becomes the ground state, which we show here by means of high-level CCSD(T) geometry optimizations. Carbenes like the experimentally known 2H-imidazol-2-ylidene react with H₂ and ethylene with negligible or no barrier in a σ-fashion, which effectively corresponds to a least-motion reaction trajectory.

Dioxygenation of unprotected mesoionic N-heterocyclic olefins

We report the dioxygenation of mesoionic N-heterocyclic olefins (mNHOs) using molecular dioxygen. For 1,2,3-triazole-derived mNHOs possessing a vinyl proton and at least one acidic C-H group, they are oxidized into the corresponding triazolium benzoate salts, whereas those without vinyl proton or an acidic C-H group are oxidized into triazolium oxide and ketones/aldehydes.

Pyrrolinium-Substituted Persistent Zwitterionic Ferrocenate Derivative Enabling the Application of Ferrocene Anolyte

Here, we report the imidazolium-/pyrrolinium-substituted persistent zwitterionic ferrocenate derivatives, which were characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Additional theoretical studies on these zwitterionic ferrocenate derivatives clearly explain the origin of their thermal stability and the orbital interactions between iron and imidazolium-/pyrrolinium-substituted zwitterionic cyclopentadienyl ligand. Exploiting the facile Fe(II/I) redox chemistry, we successfully demonstrated that the pyrrolinium-substituted ferrocene derivative can be applied as an example of derivatized ferrocene anolyte for redox-flow batteries. These zwitterionic ferrocenate derivatives will not only deepen our understanding of the intrinsic chemistry of ferrocenate but have the potential to open the way for the rational design of metallocenate derivatives for various applications.

Recent advances in the chemistry and applications of N-heterocyclic carbenes

N-Heterocyclic carbenes, despite being isolated and characterized three decades ago, still capture scientists' interest as versatile, modular and strongly coordinating moieties. In the last decade, driven by the increasingly refined fundamental understanding of their behaviour, the emergence of new carbene frameworks and cogent sustainability issues, N-heterocyclic carbenes have experienced a tremendous increase in utilization across several disparate fields. In this Review, a concise overview of N-heterocyclic carbenes encompassing their history, properties and applications in transition metal catalysis, on-surface chemistry, main group chemistry and organocatalysis is provided. Emphasis is placed on developments emerging in the last seven years and on envisaging future directions.

Metal-Free Bond Activation by Carboranyl Diphosphines

We report metal-free bond activation by the carboranyl diphosphine 1-P^tBu₂-2-PⁱPr₂-C₂B₁₀H₁₀. This main group element system contains basic binding sites and possesses the ability to cycle through two-electron redox states. The reported reactions with selected main group hydrides and alcohols occur via the formal oxidation of the phosphine groups and concomitant reduction of the boron cage. These transformations, which are driven by the cooperation between the electron-donating exohedral substituents and the electron-accepting cluster, differ from those of "regular" phosphines and are reminiscent of oxidative addition to transition metal centers, thus representing a new approach to metal-free bond activation.

Theoretical Assessment of Dinitrogen Fixation on Carbon Atom

Dinitrogen activation in non-metallic systems has received considerable attention in recent years. Herein, we report the theoretical feasibility of N₂ fixation using aminocarbenes (L) or their anionic derivatives. The molecular descriptors of L and anionic L^- , which affect the interaction of L and anionic L^- with N₂ , were identified through multiple linear regression analysis. Additionally, the electron flow during C-N bond formation was confirmed by performing intrinsic reaction coordination calculations with intrinsic bond orbital analysis for the reaction of anionic L^- with N₂ .

Bulky arene-bridged bis(amide) and bis(amidinate) complexes of germanium(II) and tin(II)

Several new, very bulky arene-bridged bis(amine) (viz. 1,3- and 1,4-{N(H)(SiPri3)}2(μ-C6H4), L1H2 and L2H2, respectively) and bis(amidine) pro-ligands (viz. 4,6-{[Dip(H)N](DipN)C}2(μ-DBF), DBF = dibenzofurandiyl, L3H2; and 1,3-{Ar†N(H)C(But)N}2(μ-C6H4), Ar† = C6H2{C(H)Ph2}2Pri-2,6,4, L4H2) have been developed. All can be doubly deprotonated with LiBun. The resultant dilithium salts react with either GeCl2·(dioxane) or SnBr2 to yield a series of amidotetrelylenecyclophanes (:E(μ-L1)2E: and :E(μ-L2)2E:, E = Ge or Sn) and bis(halotetrelylene) complexes (:E(X)(μ-L3)(X)E:, E = Ge or Sn, X = Cl or Br; and :Ge(Cl)(μ-L4)(Cl)Ge:). Reduction of :Ge(Cl)(μ-L4)(Cl)Ge: with KC8 afforded the crystallographically characterised bis(amido/amidinatogermylene) compound, :Ge(μ-L4)2Ge:, which is believed to have formed via a disproportionation process.

Mechanistic Insights into Activation of Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide, and Nitrous Oxide by Acyclic Silylene

Owing to an empty p orbital and a lone pair of electrons on the Si center, silylene exhibits reactivity similar to a transition-metal system capable of activating H₂/C-H bonds and small molecules. In this work, with the aid of density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigated the reactions of an acyclic silylene with CO, CO₂, and N₂O. The detailed mechanisms obtained lead to an in-depth understanding of the silylene single-site ambiphilic reactivity.

Fragmentation, catenation, and direct functionalisation of white phosphorus by a uranium(IV)-silyl-phosphino-carbene complex

Room temperature reaction of the uranium(iv)-carbene [U{C(SiMe3)(PPh2)}(BIPMTMS)(μ-Cl)Li(TMEDA)(μ-TMEDA)0.5]2 (1, BIPMTMS = C(PPh2NSiMe3)2) with white phosphorus (P4) produces the organo-P5 compound [P5{C(SiMe3)(PPh2)}2][Li(TMEDA)2] (2) and the uranium(iv)-methanediide [U{BIPMTMS}{Cl}{μ-Cl}2{Li(TMEDA)}] (3). This is an unprecedented example of cooperative metal-carbene P4 activation/insertion into a metal-carbon double bond and also an actinide complex reacting with P4 to directly form an organophosphorus species. Conducting the reaction at low temperature permits the isolation of the diuranium(iv) complex [{U(BIPMTMS)([μ-η2:η2-P2]C[SiMe3][PPh2])}2] (4), which then converts to 2 and 3. Thus, surprisingly, in contrast to all other actinide P4 reactivity, although this reaction produces catenation overall it proceeds via P4 cleavage to functionalised P2 units. Hence, this work establishes a proof of concept synthetic cycle for direct fragmentation, catenation, and functionalisation of P4.

A Bis (BICAAC) Palladium(II) Complex: Synthesis and Implementation as Catalyst in Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura Cross Coupling Reactions

Carbenes are one of the most appealing, well-explored, and exciting ligands in modern chemistry due to their tunable stereoelectronic properties and a wide area of applications. A palladium complex (BICAAC)₂PdCl₂ with a recently discovered cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene having bicyclo[2.2.2] octane skeleton (BICAAC) was synthesized and characterized. The enhanced σ-donating and π-accepting ability of this carbene lend a hand to form a robust Pd-carbene bond, which allowed us to probe its reactivity as a precatalyst in Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions with low catalyst loading in open-air conditions. The diverse range of substrates was explored for both the cross-coupling reactions. To get a better understanding of the catalytic reactions, several analytical techniques such as field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction were employed in a conclusive manner.

Systematic Design of a Frustrated Lewis Pair Containing Methyleneborane and Carbene for Dinitrogen Activation

Activation of atmospherically abundant dinitrogen (N₂) by metal-free species under mild reaction conditions has been one of the most challenging areas in chemistry for decades. Very recent but limited progress in N₂ activation by boron species, including two-coordinated borylene and methyleneborane and three-coordinated borole and borane, has been made toward metal-free N₂ activation. Here, we systematically probe an experimentally viable frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) containing two moieties (methyleneborane and carbene) for N₂ activation via density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which has proven to be an efficient approach for N₂ activation in a thermodynamically and kinetically favorable manner. Aromaticity is found to play a crucial role in stabilization of the product. This study could be a valuable alternative for the development of metal-free N₂ activation chemistry, highlighting great potential of FLP for N₂ activation and functionalization.

Three-membered cyclic digermylenes stabilised by an N-heterocyclic carbene

Treatment of potassium salts of silole dianions with donor stabilised germanium dichlorides gave the anticipated silagermafulvenylidenes R₂Si = Ge(Do) (R₂Si = 1-silacyclopentadiendiyl, Do = N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)) only as transient intermediates in a side reaction. They were detected by NMR spectroscopy and, in one case, the formal dimer, 2,4-disila-1λ³,3λ³-digermetane, was isolated. The main products of these reactions are sila-bis-λ³-germiranes, i.e. directly interconnected digermylenes that are part of a three-membered ring. The structural data, supported by the results of density functional calculations confirm the digermylene nature of these products with a long inner cyclic Ge-Ge bond that decreases the inherent high ring strain in silagermiranes.

Twisting versus Delocalization in CAAC- and NHC-Stabilized Boron-Based Biradicals: The Roles of Sterics and Electronics

Twisted boron-based biradicals featuring unsaturated C2 R2 (R=Et, Me) bridges and stabilization by cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs) were recently prepared. These species show remarkable geometrical and electronic differences with respect to their unbridged counterparts. Herein, a thorough computational investigation on the origin of their distinct electrostructural properties is performed. It is shown that steric effects are mostly responsible for the preference for twisted over planar structures. The ground-state multiplicity of the twisted structure is modulated by the σ framework of the bridge, and different R groups lead to distinct multiplicities. In line with the experimental data, a planar structure driven by delocalization effects is observed as global minimum for R=H. The synthetic elusiveness of C2 R2 -bridged systems featuring N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) was also investigated. These results could contribute to the engineering of novel main group biradicals.

Strain-Modulated Reactivity: An Acidic Silane

Compounds of main‐group elements such as silicon are attractive candidates for green and inexpensive catalysts. For them to compete with state‐of‐the‐art transition‐metal complexes, new reactivity modes must be unlocked and controlled, which can be achieved through strain. Using a tris(2‐skatyl)methylphosphonium ([TSMPH₃]⁺) scaffold, we prepared the strained cationic silane [TSMPSiH]⁺. In stark contrast with the generally hydridic Si−H bond character, it is acidic with an experimental pK_a^DMSO within 4.7–8.1, lower than in phenol, benzoic acid, and the few hydrosilanes with reported pK_a values. We show that ring strain significantly contributes to this unusual acidity along with inductive and electrostatic effects. The conjugate base, TSMPSi, activates a THF molecule in the presence of CH‐acids to generate a highly fluxional alkoxysilane via trace amounts of [TSMPSiH]⁺ functioning as a strain‐release Lewis acid. This reaction involves a formal oxidation‐state change from Si^II to Si^IV, presenting intriguing similarities with transition‐metal‐mediated processes.

How metallylenes activate small molecules

We have studied the activation of dihydrogen by metallylenes using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). Our detailed activation strain and Kohn-Sham molecular orbital analyses have quantified the physical factors behind the decreased reactivity of the metallylene on going down Group 14, from carbenes to stannylenes. Along this series, the reactivity decreases due to a worsening of the back-donation interaction between the filled lone-pair orbital of the metallylene and the σ*-orbital of H2, which, therefore, reduces the metallylene-substrate interaction and increases the reaction barrier. As the metallylene ligand is varied from nitrogen to phosphorus to arsenic a significant rate enhancement is observed for the activation of H2 due to (i) a reduced steric (Pauli) repulsion between the metallylene and the substrate; and (ii) less activation strain, as the metallylene becomes increasingly more predistorted. Using a rationally designed metallylene with an optimal Group 14 atom and ligand combination, we show that a number of small molecules (i.e. HCN, CO2, H2, NH3) may also be readily activated. For the first time, we show the ability of our H2 activated designer metallylenes to hydrogenate unsaturated hydrocarbons. The results presented herein will serve as a guide for the rational design of metallylenes toward the activation of small molecules and subsequent reactions.

Boron: the first p-block element to fix inert N2 all the way to NH3

Boron, the fifth lightest element, in its sub-valent state in the form of borylene is able to activate inert dinitrogen all the way to the ammonium ion. The entire conversion has been established through a successive reduction-cum-protonation sequence, through the isolation of all intermediate species involving addition of two electrons and two protons. The activation of dinitrogen by the ambiphilic borylene is a parallel tactic to that of the well-known Haber-Bosch process. This chemistry can be potentially extrapolated to the activation of similar small molecules by low valent compounds of boron and other p-block elements.

O,N-Heterocyclic germylenes as efficient catalysts for hydroboration and cyanosilylation of benzaldehyde

Novel O,N-heterocyclic germylenes were examined as catalysts for cyanosilylation and hydroboration of benzaldehyde.

N-Heterocyclic silylenes as ambiphilic activators and ligands

Recent developments of the use of N-heterocyclic silylenes (NHSis), higher homologues of Arduengo-carbenes, as ambiphilic activators and ligands are highlighted and a comparison of NHSi ligands with NHC and phosphine ligands is provided.

The use of main-group elements to mimic catalytic behavior of transition metals I: reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia catalyzed by bis(Lewis base)borylenium diradicals

The use of boron (B) atoms as transition metal mimics opens the door to new research in catalytic chemistry. An emerging class of compounds, bis(Lewis base)borylenes with an electron-rich B(i) center, are potential metal-free catalysts for dinitrogen bonding and reduction. Here, the molecular geometry, electronic structure, and possible reaction mechanism of a series of bis(Lewis base)borylene-dinitrogen compounds corresponding to the nitrogen reduction reaction have been investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our DFT calculations show that these free borylene compounds possess radical features and have the capability to activate N2 molecules via an effective combination of π(B → N2), π(N2 → B), and σ(N2 → B) electron transfer processes. The possible reaction mechanisms for direct conversion of N2 into NH3 for these bis(Lewis base)borylene-dinitrogen compounds have been systematically investigated along distal and alternating paths. The calculated free energy profiles indicate that the limiting potential of a bis(phosphine)borylene-dinitrogen compound is comparable to that of metal-based catalysts, which is the most promising candidate for the reduction of N2 to NH3via the alternating mechanism among all compounds studied here. The electronic structure analysis shows that the B center plays the role of an electron donor and acceptor alternatively in the consecutive six protonation and reduction processes, and thus acts as the electron transfer medium.

3,5-Diphenyl-2-phosphafuran: Synthesis, Structure, and Thermally Reversible [4 + 2] Cycloaddition Chemistry

Treatment of trans-chalcone with dibenzo-7-phosphanorbornadiene EtOPA (A = C₁₄H₁₀, anthracene), a source of ethoxyphosphinidene, followed by formal elimination of ethanol yields 3,5-diphenyl-2-phosphafuran (DPF) in 43% yield. We show that the phosphadiene moiety of DPF is a potent diene in the Diels-Alder reaction and reacts with dienophiles dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DPF·DMAD, 68%), norbornene (DPF·norbornene, 73%), and ethylene (DPF·C₂H₄, 80%) under ambient conditions. Mild heating of DPF·C₂H₄ results in the corresponding retro-Diels-Alder reaction, establishing DPF as a molecule that is able to reversibly bind ethylene.

Activation of Ethylene by N-Heterocyclic Carbene Coordinated Magnesium(I) Compounds

Reactions of a series of magnesium(I) compounds with ethylene, in the presence of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), have been explored. Treating [{(^Mes Nacnac)Mg}₂ ] (^Mes Nacnac=[HC(MeCNMes)₂ ]^- , Mes=mesityl) with an excess of ethylene in the presence of two equivalents of :C{(MeNCMe)₂ } (TMC) leads to the formal reductive coupling of ethylene, and formation of the 1,2-dimagnesiobutane complex, [{(^Mes Nacnac)(TMC)Mg}₂ (μ-C₄ H₈ )]. In contrast, when the reaction is repeated in the presence of three equivalents of TMC, a mixture of the β-diketiminato magnesium ethyl, [(^Mes Nacnac)(TMC)MgEt], and the NHC coordinated magnesium diamide, [(^Mes Nacnac^-H )Mg(TMC)₂ ], results. Four related products, [(^Ar Nacnac)(TMC)MgEt] (Ar=2,6-dimethylphenyl (Xyl) or 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dip)) and [(^Ar Nacnac^-H )Mg(TMC)₂ ] (Ar=Xyl or Dip), were similarly synthesised and crystallographically characterized. Computational studies have been employed to investigate the mechanisms of the two observed reaction types, which appear dependent on the substitution pattern of the magnesium(I) compound, and the stoichiometric equivalents of TMC used in the reactions.

Catalytic Activation of N2O at a Low-Valent Bismuth Redox Platform

Herein we present the catalytic activation of N₂O at a Bi^I⇄Bi^III redox platform. The activation of such a kinetically inert molecule was achieved by the use of bismuthinidene catalysts, aided by HBpin as reducing agent. The protocol features remarkably mild conditions (25 °C, 1 bar N₂O), together with high turnover numbers (TON, up to 6700) and turnover frequencies (TOF). Analysis of the elementary steps enabled structural characterization of catalytically relevant intermediates after O-insertion, namely a rare arylbismuth oxo dimer and a unique monomeric arylbismuth hydroxide. This protocol represents a distinctive example of a main-group redox cycling for the catalytic activation of N₂O.

Silylated silicon-carbonyl complexes as mimics of ubiquitous transition-metal carbonyls

Transition-metal-carbonyl complexes are common organometallic reagents that feature metal-CO bonds. These complexes have proven to be powerful catalysts for various applications. By contrast, silicon-carbonyl complexes, organosilicon reagents poised to be eco-friendly alternatives for transition-metal carbonyls, have remained largely elusive. They have mostly been explored theoretically and/or through low-temperature matrix isolation studies, but their instability had typically precluded isolation under ambient conditions. Here we present the synthesis, isolation and full characterization of stable silyl-substituted silicon-carbonyl complexes, along with bonding analysis. Initial reactivity investigations showed examples of CO liberation, which could be induced either thermally or photochemically, as well as substitution and functionalization of the CO moiety. Importantly, the complexes exhibit strong Si-CO bonding, with CO→Si σ-donation and Si→CO π-backbonding, which is reminiscent of transition-metal carbonyls. This similarity between the abundant semi-metal silicon and rare transition metals may provide new opportunities for the development of silicon-based catalysis.

A tropylium annulated N-heterocyclic carbene

Derivatives of the cationic tropylium annulated imidazolylidene ITrop⁺ are obtained by hydride abstraction from related cycloheptatriene compounds. Spectroscopic, structural and theoretical data indicate that, as a cationic relative of benzimidazolylidenes, ITrop⁺ has highly reduced σ-donor and strong π-acceptor character.

Difluoroketenimine: Generation from Difluorocarbene and Isocyanide and Its [3 + 2] Cycloadditions with Alkenes or Alkynes

Ketenimines have been explored as useful building blocks for the synthesis of heteroatom-containing cyclic compounds through the cycloaddition with polar multiple bonds. Herein, we report the cycloaddition of difluoroketenimine with nonpolar multiple bonds, namely, the cycloaddition with alkenes or alkynes. The difluoroketenimine is generated from the coupling of tert-butyl isocyanide and difluorocarbene, which is formed in situ from (bromodifluoromethyl)trimethylsilane. The difluoroketenimine then reacts in situ with alkenes or alkynes to afford fluorinated pyrrolidines or pyrroles. DFT study suggests that a fluorinated cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene is involved as the key intermediate in these reactions.

Probing the potential of metalla-N-heterocyclic carbenes towards activation of enthalpically strong bonds

Density functional theory calculations are employed to explore the reactivity of metalla-N-heterocyclic carbenes (MNHCs) towards activation of a variety of small molecules (H2, NH3, PH3, SiH3Ph and CH4). All the MNHCs considered are found to have a stable singlet ground state and possess suitable electronic properties for their application in small molecule activation. The calculated energy barriers of E-H (E = H, C, N, Si, P) activation for the MNHCs are found to be in agreement with those of the experimentally evaluated cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC) and diamidocarbenes (DACs), thereby indicating the activating effect of the incorporation of an ancillary metal center within a cyclic NHC, and highlighting a new, underexplored strategy in achieving difficult bond activations with carbenes.
