Solute-Solvent Interactions in Modern Physical Organic Chemistry: Supramolecular Polymers as a Muse

Interactions between solvents and solutes are a cornerstone of physical organic chemistry and have been the subject of investigations over the last century. In recent years, a renewed interest in fundamental aspects of solute-solvent interactions has been sparked in the field of supramolecular chemistry in general and that of supramolecular polymers in particular. Although solvent effects in supramolecular chemistry have been recognized for a long time, the unique opportunities that supramolecular polymers offer to gain insight into solute-solvent interactions have become clear relatively recently. The multiple interactions that hold the supramolecular polymeric structure together are similar in strength to those between solute and solvent. The cooperativity found in ordered supramolecular polymers leads to the possibility of amplifying these solute-solvent effects and will shed light on extremely subtle solvation phenomena. As a result, many exciting effects of solute-solvent interactions in modern physical organic chemistry can be studied using supramolecular polymers. Our aim is to put the recent progress into a historical context and provide avenues toward a more comprehensive understanding of solvents in multicomponent supramolecular systems.

Design and Evaluation of Rhein-Based MRI Contrast Agents for Visualization of Tumor Necrosis Induced by Combretastatin A-4 Disodium Phosphate

PURPOSE

Visualization of tumor necrosis can determine tumor response to therapy. Our previous study showed that the rhein-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent with alkane linker (GdL₂) could clearly image tumor necrosis. However, its water solubility and cell safety needed to be improved. Herein, three rhein-based MRI agents with ether or lysine linkers were designed.

PROCEDURES

Three rhein-based MRI agents were synthesized with a tetracarbon ether (GdP1), a hexacarbon ether (GdP2), and a lysine (GdP3) linker, respectively. Their octanol-water partition coefficients (log P) and cytotoxicity were determined. Necrosis avidity of the leading agent was explored on HepG2 cells and ischemia reperfusion-induced liver necrosis (IRLN) rats by MRI. The effect of visualization of tumor necrosis was tested on nude mice with W256 tumor treated by combretastatin-A4 phosphate (CA4P). DNA binding assays were applied to evaluate the possible necrosis-avidity mechanism of the leading agent.

RESULTS

The log P of three agents (- 1.66 ± 0.09, - 1.74 ± 0.01, - 1.95 ± 0.01) decreased when compared with GdL₂, indicating higher water solubility. GdP1 not only presented lower cytotoxicity and good necrotic affinity in vitro and in vivo, but also can be fast excreted by renal. According to MRI results of tumor, distinct visualization of tumor necrosis can be discernible from 3 to 4.5 h post-injection of GdP1. In DNA-binding assays, the fluorescence quenching constant K_SV (1.00 × 10⁴ M^-1) and the ultraviolet binding constant K_b (1.11 × 10⁴ M^-1) suggested that GdP1 may bind to DNA through intercalation.

CONCLUSION

GdP1 may serve as a potential candidate for early evaluation of tumor response to CA4P treatment.

Zinc-Ion-Stabilized Charge-Transfer Interactions Drive Self-Complementary or Complementary Molecular Recognition

Here, we show that charge-transfer interactions determine whether donor and acceptor ditopic ligands will associate in a complementary or self-complementary fashion upon metal-ion clipping. Anthracene-based (^9,10L_D and ^1,5L_D) and anthraquinone-based (^1,5L_A) ditopic ligands containing two imidazole side arms as zinc coordination sites were designed. The ^9,10L_D and ^1,5L_A systems associated in a complementary fashion (L_A/L_D/L_A) upon clipping by two zinc ions (Zn²⁺) to form an alternating donor-acceptor assembly [(^9,10L_D)(^1,5L_A)₂-(Zn²⁺)₂]. However, once the charge-transfer interactions were perturbed by subtle modifications of the imidazole side arms (^9,10L_D'^(S) and ^1,5L_A'^(S)), self-complementary association (L_D'/L_D'/L_D'/L_D' and L_A'/L_A'/L_A'/L_A') between the donor (^9,10L_D'^(S)) and acceptor (^1,5L_A'^(S)) ligands predominantly occurred to form homoassemblies [(^9,10L_D'^(S))₄-(Zn²⁺)₂ and (^1,5L_A'^(S))₄-(Zn²⁺)₂]. As in the case of a homochiral pair (^9,10L_D'^(S) and ^1,5L_A'^(S)), self-complementary association (narcissistic self-sorting) occurred in the Zn²⁺ assembly with heterochiral combinations of the donor and acceptor ligands (^9,10L_D'^(S)/^1,5L_A'^(R) and ^9,10L_D'^(S)/^1,5L_A'^(R)/^1,5L_A'^(R)). Narcissistic self-sorting also took place between the positional isomer of the donor ligands (^9,10L_D and ^1,5L_D) to form individual homoligand assemblies [(^9,10L_D)₄-(Zn²⁺)₂ and (^1,5L_D)₄-(Zn²⁺)₂]. Conversely, statistical association took place in the Zn₂L₄ assembly process of an isomorphous pair of the donor and acceptor ligands (^1,5L_D and ^1,5L_A).

Modulation of the Self-Assembly of π-Amphiphiles in Water from Enthalpy- to Entropy-Driven by Enwrapping Substituents

Depending on the connectivity of solubilizing oligoethylene glycol (OEG) side chains to the π-cores of amphiphilic naphthalene and perylene bisimide dyes, self-assembly in water occurs either upon heating or cooling. Herein, we show that this effect originates from differences in the enwrapping capability of the π-cores by the OEG chains. Rylene bisimides bearing phenyl substituents with three OEG chains attached directly to the hydrophobic π-cores are strongly sequestered by the OEG chains. These molecules self-assemble at elevated temperatures in an entropy-driven process according to temperature- and concentration-dependent UV/Vis spectroscopy and calorimetric dilution studies. In contrast, for rylene bisimides in which phenyl substituents with three OEG chains are attached via a methylene spacer, leading to much weaker sequestration, self-assembly originates upon cooling in an enthalpy-driven process. Our explanation for this controversial behavior is that the aggregation in the latter case is dictated by the release of "high energy water" from the hydrophobic π-surfaces as well as dispersion interactions between the π-scaffolds which drive the self-assembly in an enthalpically driven process. In contrast, for the former case we suggest that in addition to the conventional explanation of a dehydration of hydrogen-bonded water molecules from OEG units it is in particular the increase in conformational entropy of back-folded OEG side chains upon aggregation that provides the pronounced gain in entropy that drives the aggregation process. Thus, our studies revealed that a subtle change in the attachment of solubilizing substituents can switch the thermodynamic signature for the self-assembly of amphiphilic dyes in water from enthalpy- to entropy-driven.

A Comparative Investigation of the Role of the Anchoring Group on Perylene Monoimide Dyes in NiO-Based Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

The anchoring group of a sensitizer may strongly affect the overall properties and stability of the resulting dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and dye-sensitized photoelectrosynthetic solar cells (DSPECs). The properties of seven perylene monoimide (PMI) dyes have been comprehensively studied for their immobilization on nanocrystalline NiO film. The PMI dyes differ only by the nature of the anchoring group, which are: carboxylic acid (PMI-CO₂ H), phosphonic acid (PMI-PO₃ H₂ ), acetyl acetone (PMI-acac), pyridine (PMI-Py), aniline (PMI-NH₂ ), hydroxyquinoline (PMI-HQ), and dipicolinic acid (PMI-DPA). The dyes are investigated by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry and modeled by TD-DFT quantum chemical calculations. The mode of binding of these anchoring groups is investigated by infrared spectroscopy and the stability of the binding to NiO surface is studied by desorption experiments in acidic and basic media. The phosphonic acid group is found to offer the strongest binding to the NiO surface in terms of stability and dye loading. Finally, a photophysical study by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy shows that all dyes inject a hole in NiO with rate constants on a subpicosecond timescale and display similar charge recombination kinetics. The photovoltaic properties of the dyes show that PMI-HQ and PMI-acac give the highest photovoltaic performances, owing to a lower degree of aggregation on the surface.

Organic Acid Regulated Self-Assembly and Photophysical Properties of Perylene Bisimide Derivatives

In this work, perylene bisimide derivatives (PBI-1 and PBI-2) with tertiary amine groups were designed and synthesized. To control the final morphologies and properties of their aggregates, seven kinds of organic acids were used to alter the self-assembly environment. The influence of organic acids on the morphology of the aggregates was investigated. Photophysical properties of the aggregates were markedly affected by the kind and concentration of the organic acid. The thermal and gas sensitivities of the PBI-1 aggregates were studied with the use of UV-visible spectroscopy and digital imaging. The shift of the UV-visible spectra varied with time, temperature, acid type and acid concentration. Furthermore, PBI-1 aggregates showed a red-to-blue color change after addition of seven organic acids, whereas the color of the PBI-2 aggregates remained red. These changes of morphologies, photophysical properties and their thermal and gas sensitivities make these aggregates potentially useful in the fields of optoelectronics or sensors.

Measurement of Solvation Ability of Solvents by Porphyrin-Based Solvation/Desolvation Indicators

A new solvent scale, solvation ability (SA), was developed to arrange solvents in the order of their SA for large π-conjugated compounds. The SA of a solvent was determined in a binary solvent system of an assessed solvent and a standard "good" solvent (GS) or "poor" solvent (PS), chloroform or methylcyclohexane, respectively, in the presence of two types of solvation/desolvation indicators, 1Zn₂ and 2Zn₂ . The latter comprises bis(imidazolylporphyrinatozinc) linked via a 1,3-butadiynylene moiety having linear alkyl and hydrophilic side chains, respectively. GSs and PSs give extended (E-) and stacked (S-) supramolecular polymers of the indicators, respectively. SA values are defined as vol % of the standard solvent added to an assessed solvent to give the balance point where comparable amounts of E- and S-polymers of the indicators coexist. GSs and PSs have positive and negative signs, respectively. In this study, the SA of 25 solvents was determined. The SA values with indicator 1Zn₂ were as follows: ethyl acetate (-81), hexane (-66), toluene (-50), cyclohexane (-47), CCl₄ (-25), chloroform (50), and nitrobenzene (79).

Supramolecular Chiral Discrimination of D-Phenylalanine Amino Acid Based on a Perylene Bisimide Derivative

The interaction between homochiral substituted perylene bisimide (PBI) molecule and the D enantiomer of phenylalanine amino acid was monitored. Spectroscopic transitions of PBI derivative in aqueous solution in the visible range were used to evaluate the presence of D-phenylalanine. UV-visible, fluorescence, FT-IR, and AFM characterizations showed that D-phenylalanine induces significant variations in the chiral perylene derivative aggregation state and the mechanism is enantioselective as a consequence of the 3D analyte structure. The interaction mechanism was further investigated in presence of interfering amino acid (D-serine and D-histidine) confirming that both chemical structure and its 3D structure play a crucial role for the amino acid discrimination. A D-phenylalanine fluorescence sensor based on perylene was proposed. A limit of detection (LOD) of 64.2 ± 0.38 nM was calculated in the range 10-7-10-5 M and of 1.53 ± 0.89 μM was obtained in the range 10-5 and 10-3 M.

Mixed Organic Ligand Shells: Controlling the Nanoparticle Surface Morphology toward Tuning the Optoelectronic Properties

Precise control over the ratio of perylene bisimide (PBI) monomers and aggregates, immobilized on alumina nanoparticle (NP) surfaces, is demonstrated. Towards this goal, phosphonic acid functionalized PBI derivatives (PA-PBI) are shown to self-assemble into stoichiometrically mixed monolayers featuring aliphatic, glycolic, or fluorinated phosphonic acid ligands, serving as imbedding matrix (PA-M) to afford core-shell NPs. Different but, nevertheless, defined PBI monomer/aggregate composition is achieved by either the variation in the PA-PBI to PA-M ratios, or the utilization of different PA-Ms. Various steady-state as well as time-resolved spectroscopy techniques are applied to probe the core-shell NPs with respect to changes in their optical properties upon variations in the shell composition. To this end, the ratio between monomer and excimer-like emission assists in deriving information on the self-assembled monolayer composition, local ordering, and corresponding aggregate content. With the help of X-ray reflectivity measurements, accompanied by molecular dynamics simulations, the built-up of the particle shells, in general, and the PBI aggregation behavior, in particular, are explored in depth.

Self-Assembly of Bowl-Shaped Naphthalimide-Annulated Corannulene

The self-assembly of a bowl-shaped naphthalimide-annulated corannulene of high solubility has been studied in a variety of solvents by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Evaluation by the anti-cooperative K2-K model revealed the formation of supramolecular dimers of outstanding thermodynamic stability. Further structural proof for the almost exclusive formation of dimers over extended aggregates is demonstrated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) measurements as well as by theoretical calculations. Thus, herein we present the first report of a supramolecular dimer of an annulated corannulene derivative in solution and discuss its extraordinarily high thermodynamic stability with association constants up to >106 M-1 in methylcyclohexane, which is comparable to the association constants given for planar phthalocyanine and perylene bisimide dyes.

Thermodynamic insights into the entropically driven self-assembly of amphiphilic dyes in water

Self-assembly of amphiphilic dyes and π-systems are more difficult to understand and to control in water compared to organic solvents due to the hydrophobic effect. Herein, we elucidate in detail the self-assembly of a series of archetype bolaamphiphiles bearing a naphthalene bisimide (NBI) π-core with appended oligoethylene glycol (OEG) dendrons of different size. By utilizing temperature-dependent UV-vis spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), we have dissected the enthalpic and entropic parameters pertaining to the molecules' self-assembly. All investigated compounds show an enthalpically disfavored aggregation process leading to aggregate growth and eventually precipitation at elevated temperature, which is attributed to the dehydration of oligoethylene glycol units and their concomitant conformational changes. Back-folded conformation of the side chains plays a major role, as revealed by molecular dynamics (MD) and two dimensional NMR (2D NMR) studies, in directing the association. The sterical effect imparted by the jacketing of monomers and dimers also changes the aggregation mechanism from isodesmic to weakly anti-cooperative.

Self-Assembled Dual Helical Nanofibers of Amphiphilic Perylene Diimides with Oligopeptide Substitution

We designed an asymmetric amphiphilic perylene diimide (PDI) with the oligopeptide substituting one of the imides. The self-assembly mechanism of this PDI in different solvents was investigated. Right-handed "dual" helical nanofibers/nanowires with a uniform lateral dimension of ∼8 nm are constructively self-assembled. The long-term ordered degree within the nanofibers stems from the delicate balance between π-π stacking of the PDI rings and β-sheet-like hydrogen bond formed by the oligopeptide. The synergistic interplay between the hydrogen bond and π-π stacking rather than competition endows the nanofibers with the controllable longitudinal dimensions by different factors such as the concentration and solvents. The transition from the nanofibers to the small aggregates is also achieved by the addition of trifluoroacetic acid because of breakup of the hydrogen bonds, which is reversed by further addition of trimethylamine. The acid-base stimulation can be extended to different solvents as long as the existence of the unique hydrogen bonds.

Synthesis and Photocontrolled Supramolecular Self-Assembly of Azobenzene-Functionalized Perylene Bisimide Derivatives

Azobenzene (Azo) units were successfully introduced into perylene bisimide (PBI) structures in order to realize the photocontrolling of the morphology of the supramolecular assembly of PBI by a photoisomerization process. A total of three Azo-functionalized perylene bisimide derivatives (PBI1, PBI2, and PBI3) with different alkyl chain lengths were designed and synthesized by imidization of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride with the corresponding amines. The structures of these compounds were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). The photoisomerization behaviors of Azo units in PBIs were investigated using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) absorption spectroscopy, which were obviously effected by solvents and the alkyl chain length. Furthermore, the photoisomerization of Azo units has the obviously regulatory effect on the morphology of supramolecular assembly of PBIs, especially for the medium-length alkyl chain-linked Azo-functionalized PBI derivative (PBI2). This research realized the photocontrolling of the morphology of the supramolecular assembly of PBI derivatives by photoisomerization of Azo units.

Catalyst-Free One-Pot Synthesis of Unsymmetrical Five- and Six-Membered Sulfur-Annulated Heterocyclic Perylene Diimides for Electron-Transporting Property

A novel unsymmetrical five- and six-membered sulfur-annulated heterocyclic perylene diimides (PDI) derivative was obtained by a one-pot and catalyst-free synthesis in a high yield. The unsymmetrical PDI exhibits a noteworthy bathochromic shift absorption of up to 700 nm and a low-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of -3.99 eV. The compound owns a complete planar structure and a high electron mobility of 4.8 × 10^-3 cm² V^-1 s^-1 in solution-processable top-gate/bottom-contact organic field-effect transistor device.

Updated developments on molecular imaging and therapeutic strategies directed against necrosis

Cell death plays important roles in living organisms and is a hallmark of numerous disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, sepsis and acute pancreatitis. Moreover, cell death also plays a pivotal role in the treatment of certain diseases, for example, cancer. Noninvasive visualization of cell death contributes to gained insight into diseases, development of individualized treatment plans, evaluation of treatment responses, and prediction of patient prognosis. On the other hand, cell death can also be targeted for the treatment of diseases. Although there are many ways for a cell to die, only apoptosis and necrosis have been extensively studied in terms of cell death related theranostics. This review mainly focuses on molecular imaging and therapeutic strategies directed against necrosis. Necrosis shares common morphological characteristics including the rupture of cell membrane integrity and release of cellular contents, which provide potential biomarkers for visualization of necrosis and necrosis targeted therapy. In the present review, we summarize the updated joint efforts to develop molecular imaging probes and therapeutic strategies targeting the biomarkers exposed by necrotic cells. Moreover, we also discuss the challenges in developing necrosis imaging probes and propose several biomarkers of necrosis that deserve to be explored in future imaging and therapy research.

Co-solvent polarity controlled self-assembly of tetraphenylethylene-buried amphiphile for size-regulated tumor accumulation

We report that the co-solvent polarity can precisely control the TPE-buried amphiphile 1 to self-assemble into nanoparticles (NPs) in water with size range from ∼21–32 nm to 55–68 nm to 95–106 nm. Excepted for size, these TPE-buried amphiphile fabricated NPs hold identical physical properties such as spherical shape, surface charge, and luminescent properties, and moreover, after covalent capture of the acrylate hydrophilic heads, the resulting cross-linked NPs (cNPs I–III) own excellent in vivo stability, which thus would be an ideal platform for investigating the size effects on tumor accumulation and penetration.

Molecular Control of Internal Crystallization and Photocatalytic Function in Supramolecular Nanostructures

Supramolecular light-absorbing nanostructures are useful building blocks for the design of next-generation artificial photosynthetic systems. Development of such systems requires a detailed understanding of how molecular packing influences the material's optoelectronic properties. We describe a series of crystalline supramolecular nanostructures in which the substituents on their monomeric units strongly affects morphology, ordering kinetics, and exciton behavior. By designing constitutionally-isomeric perylene monoimide (PMI) amphiphiles, the effect of side chain sterics on nanostructure crystallization was studied. Molecules with short amine linked alkyl-tails rapidly crystallize upon dissolution in water, while bulkier tails require the addition of salt to screen electrostatic repulsion and annealing to drive crystallization. A PMI monomer bearing a 3-pentylamine tail was found to possess a unique structure that results in strongly red-shifted absorbance, indicative of charge-transfer exciton formation. This particular supramolecular structure was found to have an enhanced ability to photosensitize a thiomolybdate, [(NH₄)₂Mo₃S₁₃], catalyst to generate hydrogen gas.

Chromophore Dipole Directs Morphology and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

The spontaneous self-assembly of chromophores into light-harvesting antennae provides a potentially low-cost approach to building solar-to-fuel conversion materials. However, designing such supramolecular architectures requires a better understanding of the balance between noncovalent forces among the molecular components. We investigated here the aqueous assembly of perylene monoimide chromophore amphiphiles synthesized with different substituents in the 9-position. The molecular dipole strength decreases as the nature of the substituent is altered from electron donating to electron withdrawing. Compounds with stronger molecular dipoles, in which dipolar interactions stabilize assemblies by 10-15 kJ·mol-1, were found to form crystalline nanoribbons in solution. In contrast, when the molecular dipole moment is small, nanofibers were obtained. Highly blue-shifted absorption maxima were observed in assemblies with large dipoles, indicating strong electronic coupling is present. However, only the moderate dipole compound had the appropriate molecular packing to access charge-transfer excitons leading to enhanced photocatalytic H2 production.

Solvent switchable nanostructures and the function of a π-amphiphile

This manuscript reports solvent tunable functional nano-assemblies of an unsymmetrical bola-shaped π-amphiphile (NDI-PY) which consists of a hydrophobic naphthalene-diimide (NDI) chromophore connected to a non-ionic hydrophilic wedge and a pyridine group at its two opposite arms. Importantly, it contains a hydrazide group located at the hydrophobic domain between the NDI-chromophore and the hydrophilic-wedge to drive the supramolecular assembly by directional H-bonding. NDI-PY exhibits spontaneous assembly in water as well as in a highly non-polar solvent like tetra-chloroethylene (TCE) by the synergistic effect of H-bonding and π-stacking interaction. Spectroscopy studies reveal almost identical self-assembly features in water and TCE with critical aggregation concentrations in the range of 0.3 mM, which matches the values obtained from the isothermal calorimetry (ITC) dilution experiment. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments reveal a single endothermic peak at 31 °C (ΔH = -12.3 kJ mol^-1) and 40 °C (ΔH = -5.35 kJ mol^-1) for water and TCE, respectively, indicating marginally higher thermal stability in TCE, which is consistent with the FT-IR data, suggesting stronger H-bonding in TCE. Although the molecular assembly features appear to be similar, NDI-PY produces distinctly different mesoscopic structures in water and TCE. In water, it forms vesicles (D_h = 150-180 nm) with the pyridine groups displayed at the outer surface, while in TCE it generates a transparent gel (CGC = 8.0 mM) with a nanotubular (width ∼50 nm, wall thickness ∼10 nm) morphology. Powder X-ray diffraction studies show clearly different packing structures; in water a single sharp peak at the low angle (d = 19.3 Å, a little shorter than the extended length of the molecule) suggests the formation of a monolayer membrane, while in TCE several sharp peaks appear with the d values maintaining a ratio of 1 : 1/√3 : 1/2 : 1/√7 : 1/3 : 1/√12, indicating the formation of a 2D hexagonal lattice. Photoconductivity measurements reveal moderate electronic conduction in both cases. However, it shows a remarkable enhancement of the life time of the charge-carriers for the nanotubular structure compared to the vesicular morphology. On the other hand, the vesicles in water display antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive S. aureus with a highly promising MIC_LB value of 29.4 μg mL^-1. In contrast, it does not lyse human red blood cells even at as high a concentration as 2.5 mg mL^-1 (HC₅₀ > 2.5 mg mL^-1), implying high selectivity of the NDI-PY vesicles towards bacterial cells over mammalian cells. Display of the pyridine groups at the outer surface of the membrane enables molecular recognition by complementary H-bonding with a carboxylic acid group and thereby facilitates uptake of the attached pyrene chromophores in the NDI-membrane by charge-transfer interaction between the NDI acceptor and the pyrene donor. In fact a Job's plot experiment reveals maximum uptake at a 1 : 1 ratio of the NDI-PY and the pyrene guest, indicating all the pyridine groups are accessible at the vesicular surface.

Junction-Controlled Topological Polymerization

Methodology that enables the controlled synthesis of linear and branched polymers from an identical monomer will be a novel pathway for polymer synthesis and processing. Herein we first describe the control of one or both of the C(3)-C(3') and C(6)-C(6') coupling reactions of carbazolyl. In a second approach, an identical monomer containing two carbazolyls is polymerized using chemical and electrochemical oxidizers, leading to topologically controllable growth of linear polymers in weak oxidizer or of cross-linked polymer chains in strong oxidizer, with satisfactory long chain propagation of step growth polymerization (M_n =6.0×10⁴  g mol^-1 , M_w /M_n =2.3). This very simple polymerization with cheap reagents and low levels of waste has provided a flexible pathway for synthesis and processing of polymers.

Tunable multicolor emissions in a monocomponent gel system by varying the solvent, temperature and fluoride anion

The facile tuning of the fluorescent properties of organogels is highly desirable for optical switches, light-emitting diodes, chemosensors and bioprobes. The design of organic molecules with multiple emission colors but only one molecular platform remains challenging. Herein, a new cholesterol-based organogelator N1 containing D-A pairs (salicylaldehyde and naphthalimide units) was designed. We successfully obtained multiple solvent-tuned emission colors in both the solution and gel states using a unimolecular platform. Moreover, the effects of the solvent on the gel morphology, rheology and anion-responsive properties were studied. Finally, we showed that the gel in benzene displayed reversible thermochromic properties with changes in emission color from yellow-green to red. Several experiments suggested that a short-distance and ordered array of the D-A pairs facilitated the efficient intermolecular electron transfer of the fluorophores.

NH Tautomerism of a Quadruply Fused Porphyrin: Rigid Fused Structure Delays the Proton Transfer

We report herein NH tautomerism of a freebase derivative of a quadruply fused porphyrin (H₂QFP-Mes, 3), which has one mesityl group at one of the β-positions of the nonfused pyrroles to lower the structural symmetry, allowing us to observe the NH tautomerism with ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Compound 3 was revealed to have the two inner NH protons on the two nonfused pyrroles, and the NH tautomerism of 3 was evidenced by variable-temperature (VT) ¹H NMR experiments in various deuterated solvents. The VT-NMR studies revealed that the activation barrier for the NH tautomerism of 3 was larger than that of tetraphenylporphyrin. The positive activation entropy (ΔS^‡ = 89 J mol^-1 K^-1), determined for the NH tautomerism, can be explained by dissociation of the π-π stacked dimer structure of 3 in the ground state, as evidenced by the crystal structure and NMR measurements. On the basis of the kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations, the stability of intermediates in the NH tautomerism of 3 and the transition states have been discussed in detail.

Solvatochromism in perylene diimides; experiment and theory

We report an experimental and computational investigation into the solvatochromism of a perylene diimide derivative. The alkyl swallowtail substituents allowed solubility in many solvents of widely differing polarity, with a complicated resultant behaviour, illustrating both negative and positive solvatochromism as a function of dielectric constant. Luminescence quantum yield and optical absorption linewidth displayed an inverse correlation, indicating varying degrees of intermolecular aggregation, and a remarkably similar trend was found between the peak absorption wavelength and the solvent boiling point, illustrating the dependency of aggregation on the solvent interactions. These outline trends may be parameterised by an empirically derived dimensionless quantity, as a tool to be used in more sophisticated future models of solvatochromism in small molecule chromophores.
