Abstract
Organic molecules with electron acceptors or withdrawal substituents terminal at π-conjugated system are promising candidates to be explored as materials with high linear and nonlinear optical properties. On the basis of these features, a novel asymmetric azine ( 7E, 8E)-2-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-benzylidene)-1-(4-nitrobenzylidene)hydrazineC15H13N3O4 (NMZ) was synthesized. The molecular structure of NMZ was elucidated by X-ray crystallography and the supramolecular arrangement was analyzed from Hirshfeld surface methodology. An iterative electrostatic scheme using a super molecule approach, where neighboring molecules are represented by charge points, was employed to investigate optical dipole moment (μ), the linear polarization (α) and the first (β) and second (γ) hyperpolarizabilities. The NMZ crystallized in the centrosymetric space group P21/n and packs via combined O-H···O, C-H···O, and N···π interactions. The macroscopic property of third order χ(3) found for the NMZ is 298.62 times greater than values reported for chalcone derivative (2 E)-1-(3-bromophenyl)-3-[4 (methylsulfanyl)phenyl]prop-2-en-1-one. The results for NMZ indicate a good nonlinear optical effect.

Abstract
Abstract
The crystal structures of four azines, namely 1-3-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-diaza-1,4-butadiene, 1, 1,3-bis(2,3-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,3-diaza-1,4-butadiene, 2, 1,3-bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-diaza-1,4-butadiene, 3, and 1,3-bis(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-diaza-1,4-butadiene, 4, are reported. Molecules of 3 and 4, and both independent molecules of 2, Mol A and Mol B, possess inversion centers. The central C=N–N=C units in each molecule is planar with an (E,E) conformation. The intermolecular interactions found in the four compounds are C–H···O, C–H–N, C–H---π and π---π interactions. However, there is no consistent set of intermolecular interactions for the four compounds. Compound, 1, has a two-dimensional undulating sheet structure, generated from C–H···O and C–H···N intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The only recognized intermolecular interaction in 2 is a C–H···O hydrogen bond, which results in a zig-zag chain of alternating molecules, Mol A and Mol B. While 3 forms a puckered sheet of molecules, solely via C–H···π interactions, its isomeric compound, 4, has a more elaborate three-dimensional structure generated from a combination of C–H···O hydrogen bonds, C–H···π and π···π interactions.
The findings in this study, based on both PLATON and Hirshfeld approaches, for the four representative compounds match well the reported structural findings in the literature of related compounds, which are based solely on geometric parameters.

Abstract
On-surface synthesis is an emerging approach to obtain, in a single step, precisely defined chemical species that cannot be obtained by other synthetic routes. The control of the electronic structure of organic/metal interfaces is crucial for defining the performance of many optoelectronic devices. A facile on-surface chemistry route has now been used to synthesize the strong electron-acceptor organic molecule quinoneazine directly on a Cu(110) surface, via thermally activated covalent coupling of para-aminophenol precursors. The mechanism is described using a combination of in situ surface characterization techniques and theoretical methods. Owing to a strong surface-molecule interaction, the quinoneazine molecule accommodates 1.2 electrons at its carbonyl ends, inducing an intramolecular charge redistribution and leading to partial conjugation of the rings, conferring azo-character at the nitrogen sites.

Abstract
Abstract
The crystal structures and Hirshfeld surface analyses are reported, from data collected at 100 K, of six 1,4-bis(X,Y-phenyl)-2,3-diazabuta-1,3-dienes (1–6), namely (1: X, Y=H, 4-Cl; 2: X, Y=3,4-Cl2; 3: X, Y=2,4-Cl2; 4: X, Y=H, 2-Br, H; 5: X, Y=H, 3-Br; 6: X, Y=H, 4-Br. The six halogen derivatives crystallise in the monoclinic group P21/c. In each case, the asymmetric unit is one half of the molecule, with the molecules lying across inversion centres, midway between the N–N bonds, with the central C–C=N–N=C–C fragments having all transoid conformations. Each of the six molecules deviates a little from overall planarity. The π···π stacking interactions are the most important intermolecular interactions in each of the six compounds. In the cases of 3 and 4, the π···π stacks are augmented by additional C–X···π (X=Cl or Br) interactions, while in 4, the π···π stacks are linked by weak Br···Br interactions, and in 3, weak Cl···Cl contacts are considered to be also involved in cementing the supra molecular arrangements. The short separations of the layers within the stacks and the extent of the overlaps of the π systems point to significant strengths of the π···π interactions. Comparisons with published structures of related chloro and fluoro compounds indicated similar results: related iodo derivatives, IC6H4CH=N–N=CHC6H4I do not possess as strong π···π interactions. The Hirshfeld analysis indicated further intermolecular contacts which fell outside the normal PLATON cutoff values.

Abstract
A colorimetric and fluorescent probe L has been designed and synthesized, which bearing the double azine moiety and showing a detection limit of 2.725 × 10-7 M towards Zn2+. Based on the basic recognition mechanism of ESIPT and CHEF effect, the L has high selectivity and sensitivity to only Zn2+ (not Fe3+, Hg2+, Ag+, Ca2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Cr3+, and Mg2+) within the physiological pH range (pH = 7.0-8.4) and showed a fluorescence switch. Moreover, this detection progress occured in the DMSO/H2O ∼ HEPES buffer (80/20, v/v; pH 7.23) solution which can conveniently used on test strip.

Abstract
A series of polyaromatic hydrocarbons with anthracene, phenanthrene and pyrene units connected with Schiff base junctions were synthesized via condensation of p-phenylenediamine and hydrazine with selected aldehydes. The effect of both hydrocarbon structures and presence of N-N- or phenyl- linked diimines on properties of the prepared azines and azomethines was analyzed. The obtained compounds were soluble in common organic solvents and melted in the range of 226-317°C. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated by UV-vis, photoluminescence spectroscopies and cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. Moreover, a density functional theory (DFT) was applied for calculation of their electronic and geometric structures as well as absorption and emission spectra. Additionally, their electron acceptor activity was preliminary tested in photovoltaic experiment.

Abstract
![]()
Azines
(2,3-diazabuta-1,3-dienes) are a widely used class of compounds
with conjugated C=N double bonds. Herein, we present a direct
synthesis of azines from alcohols and hydrazine hydrate. The reaction,
catalyzed by a ruthenium pincer complex, evolves dihydrogen and can
be run in a base-free version. The dehydrogenative coupling of benzylic
and aliphatic alcohols led to good conversions and yields. Spectroscopic
evidence for a hydrazine-coordinated dearomatized ruthenium pincer
complex was obtained. Isolation of a supramolecular crystalline compound
provided evidence for the important role of hydrogen bonding networks
under the reaction conditions.

Abstract
Amidinohydrazone, an important class of biologically active molecules, is generally represented as a hydrazone. This moiety prefers to exist in its azine tautomeric state and hence, influences the physical, chemical and receptor binding properties.
