Access to tetracyclic aromatics with bridgehead metals via metalla-click reactions

The never-ending pursuits for exploring aromatic molecular architectures result in the large libraries of aromatics with fascinating structures, which have greatly broadened the scope of aromaticity. Despite extensive efforts that have been paid to develop aromatic frameworks, the construction of polycyclic aromatics that share a bridgehead atom with more than three rings has never been accomplished. Here, an unprecedented family of aromatics, in which a metal center shared by 4 five-membered aromatic rings, has been achieved by using the metalla-click reactions with excellent yields and remarkable regioselectivity. The distinctive tetracyclic aromatics exhibit a broad absorption in the ultraviolet-visible near-infrared region and excellent thermal stability in air, enabling their potential applications in photoelectric materials and biomedicine. This study now makes it possible to incorporate four aromatic rings with one common sharing metal center by a straightforward strategy that would promote further development of previously unknown polycyclic complex motifs in aromatic chemistry.

Synthesis of 1,1'-Bis(1-Methyl/Chloro-2,3,4,5-Tetraphenyl-1-Silacyclopentadienyl) [Ph4C4Si(Me/Cl)-(Me/Cl)SiC4Ph4] from Silole Anion [MeSiC4Ph4]-•[Li+ or Na+] and Silole Dianion [SiC4Ph4]2-•2[Li+]; Oxidative Coupling of Silole Anion [MeSiC4Ph4]-•[Li+ or Na+] by Ferrous Chloride (FeCl2) and Oxidative Coupling and Chlorination of Silole Dianion [SiC4Ph4]2-•2[Li+] by Cupric Chloride (CuCl2)

A reaction of silole anion {[MeSiC₄Ph₄]⁻•[Li⁺ or Na⁺] (1) with anhydrous ferrous chloride (FeCl₂) in THF (tetrahydrofuran) gives 1,1′-bis(1-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopentadienyl) [Ph₄C₄Si(Me)-(Me)SiC₄Ph₄] (2) with precipitation of iron metal in high yield. Silole dianion {[SiC₄Ph₄]²⁻•2[Li⁺] (3) is added to anhydrous cupric chloride (CuCl₂) in THF at −78 °C, then the dark red solution changes into a greenish solution. From the solution, a green solid is isolated, and stirring it in toluene at room temperature provides quantitatively 1,1′-bis(1-chloro-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopentadienyl) [Ph₄C₄Si(Cl)-(Cl)SiC₄Ph₄] (4) with precipitation of copper metal in toluene. The green solid is suggested to be 1,1′-bissilolyl bisradical [Ph₄C₄Si-SiC₄Ph₄]^2• (8), and lithium cuprous chloride salts {[Li₂Cu^ICl₂]⁺•[Cu^ICl₂]⁻}. Both reactions are initiated by single-electron transfer (SET) from the electron-rich anionic silole substrates (1 and 3) to iron(II) and copper(II).

Rhodapentalenes: Pincer Complexes with Internal Aromaticity

Pincer complexes are a remarkably versatile family benefited from their stability, diversity, and tunability. Many of them contain aromatic organic rings at the periphery, and aromaticity plays an important role in their stability and properties, whereas their metallacyclic cores are not aromatic. Herein, we report rhodapentalenes, which can be viewed as pincer complexes in which the metallacyclic cores exhibit considerable aromatic character. Rhodapentalenes show good thermal stability, although the rhodium-carbon bonds in such compounds are fragile. Experimental and computational studies suggest that the stabilization of rigid CCC pincer architectures together with an intrinsic aromaticity is vital for these metallacyclic rhodium species. Dearomatization-aromatization reactions, corresponding to metal-ligand cooperation of classical aromatic pincer complexes, were observed in this system. These findings suggest a new concept for pincer chemistry, the internal aromaticity involving metal d-orbitals, which would be useful for exploiting the nature of construction motif and inspire further applications.

Potassium Salts of 2,5-Bis(trimethylsilyl)-Germolide: Switching between Aromatic and Non-Aromatic States

The reduction of a 1-mesityl-2,5-bis-trimethylsilylchlorogermole 8 with KC₈ is reported. While the reaction with one equivalent of KC₈ gave the dimer with a Ge-Ge bond 10, excess of KC₈ (four equivalents) resulted in the formation of the potassium salt of the germole dianion, 11 with reductive cleavage of the Ge-C bond. Careful reduction with two equivalents of KC₈ in THF provided the potassium salt of the planar germolide 5. Its solid-state structure revealed contact ion pairs with the potassium ion η⁵ -coordinated to the germacyclopentadienide ring. The molecular structure of the anion indicates a high degree of cyclic electron delocalization, in agreement with results from DFT calculations. Separation of the ion pair by complexation of the potassium ions with 18-crown-6 triggers the isomerization to germolide 6, which is characterized by a pyramidal coordination sphere of the germanium atom and a localized diene structure. The isomers 5 and 6 represent a rare example for a structurally manifested switch between a non-aromatic and an aromatic state induced by an external stimulus, in this case the complexation of the counter cation.

Tetralithio Metalla-aromatics with Two Independent Perpendicular Dilithio Aromatic Rings Spiro-fused by One Manganese Atom

Herein, we present the realization of a class of unprecedented aromatic structures 2: metalla-aromatics with two independent and perpendicular aromatic rings spiro-fused by a transition-metal spiro atom, of which their corresponding organic analogues are impossible. Tetralithio spiro manganacycles 2 are readily synthesized from 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes 1 and MnCl₂ in the presence of lithium. The aromaticity of 2 is supported by experimental measurements (X-ray structural analysis, NMR) and theoretical analyses (NICS, ACID, MOs). The spiro atom Mn in 2 uses its 3d_xz and 3d_xy orbitals to form the two perpendicular manganacycles, which are two independent 6π aromatic systems. Theoretical analyses reveal that the Li cations play an indispensable role in governing their geometric and electronic structures and hence their aromaticity. Therefore, this work contributes not only to enrich the concept of aromaticity, but also to deepen the understanding of the fundamental chemical bonding.

1-Titanacyclobuta-2,3-diene - an elusive four-membered cyclic allene

The synthesis and characterisation of a 1-titanacyclobuta-2,3-diene complex, an organometallic analog of elusive 1,2-cyclobutadiene, is presented.

The synthesis of an unusual 1-metalla-2,3-cyclobutadiene complex [rac-(ebthi)Ti(Me₃SiC₃SiMe₃)] (rac-ebthi = rac-1,2-ethylene-1,1′-bis(η⁵-tetrahydroindenyl)), a formal metallacyclic analogue of a non-existent four-membered 1,2-cyclobutadiene, is described. By variation of the cyclopentadienyl ligand of the titanocene precursor it was possible to stabilise this highly exotic compound which selectively reacts with ketones and aldehydes to yield enynes by oxygen transfer to titanium. Analysis of the bonding and electronic structure of the metallacycle shows that the complex is best described as an unusual antiferromagnetically coupled biradicaloid system, possessing a formal Ti(iii) centre coordinated with a monoanionic radical ligand.

Synthesis and Characterization of Cyclopropaosmanaphthalenes Containing a Fused σ-Aromatic Metallacyclopropene Unit

Metalla-aromatics are important complexes that show unique properties owing to their highly conjugated systems, which show Hückel or Möbius aromaticity. Recently, several metalla-aromatics showing spiro-aromaticity or σ-aromaticity have been reported. Herein, we report the isolation of the first cyclopropametallanaphthalenes, in which the metallacyclopropene ring shows σ-aromaticity and weak hyperconjugative aromaticity. The reaction of OsCl₂ (PPh₃ )₃ with o-ethynylphenyl alkynes in the presence of PPh₃ followed by protonation with HCl yielded the first cyclopropametallanaphthalenes. The reaction mechanism and the aromaticity were also investigated by density functional theory studies.

Access to Metal-Bridged Osmathiazine Derivatives by a Formal [4+2] Cyclization

Treatment of osmacyclopentadiene derivatives 1 with phenyl or isopropyl isothiocyanate gave the fused five and six-membered osmacycles 2-5 by a formal [4+2] cyclization. The facile protonation of the newly generated exocyclic imine in complexes 2-5 afforded conjugation-extended osmacycle derivatives 6-9. Compounds 2-9 each contain two main-group heteroatoms (N and S) in the fused six-membered ring located at the ortho (for S) and para (for N) positions relative to the osmium centre; these species can be regarded as rare osma-1,3-thiazine derivatives and represent the first fused metallathiazine derivatives. In contrast to the non-planar organic 6H-1,3-thiazine, nearly coplanar metallathiazines 8 and 9 can be achieved by tuning the groups on the two nitrogen atoms. These unique metal-bridged osma-1,3-thiazine derivatives exhibit remarkable stabilities, broad spectral absorptions spanning the visible spectra, and considerable photothermal properties, which suggests their potential applications in material science.

Cylindrical NIR-Responsive Metallopolymer Containing Möbius Metalla-aromatics

Metalla-aromatic complexes are very stable and excellent light-absorbing compounds, owing to their highly conjugated frameworks. The metallopolymers containing metalla-aromatic substructures consist of a new type of functional polymer, because they exhibit characteristics of both metalla-aromatic and polymeric units. Herein, we reported a corn-like cylindrical metallopolymer, prepared from the controlled polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) by a polyrotaxane-based macroinitiator, followed by postpolymerization modification with a photothermal metalla-aromatic complex. The corn-like shape of this metallopolymer was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Combining the photothermal effect of the metalla-aromatic unit and the thermosensitive property of PNIPAM, the corn-like metallopolymer exhibits a NIR-responsive behavior and represents a new smart material.

Facile synthesis of polycyclic metallaarynes

Metalla-analogs of polycyclic arynes represent an interesting class of metallaaromatics with a formal M[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond within the ring. The first examples of a bicyclic β-metallaaryne and tricyclic metallaarynes, including a metallaanthracyne and a metallaphenanthryne, were obtained in good yields by reactions of OsCl2(PPh3)3 with alkyne-functionalized phosphorus ylides.

Strict Correlation of HOMO Topology and Magnetic Aromaticity Indices in d-Block Metalloaromatics

Magnetic aromaticity and antiaromaticity of closed shell metalloaromatics with 4d transition metals (Nb, Tc, Rh) is strictly correlated with the orbital topology (Möbius or Hückel) of their π-HOMO, investigated computationally with DFT methods. A surprisingly simple rule emerged: the metallacycle is aromatic (antiaromatic) when the number of π MOs is even and the π-HOMO is of Möbius (Hückel) topology-and vice versa when the number of π MOs is odd.

A Dimeric η1 ,η5 -Germole Dianion Bridged Titanium(III) Complex with a Multicenter Ti-Ge-Ge-Ti Bond

Dimeric germole dianion bridged Ti^III and Zr^IV complexes have been synthesized. In these complexes, the germole dianion adopts a formal η¹ ,η⁵ coordination to the two metal centers. The bonding situation in these bridged dimers is dominated by a covalent Ge-Ge interaction that results, for example, in a strong antiferromagnetic coupling of the d¹ Ti centers.

Constraint of a ruthenium-carbon triple bond to a five-membered ring

The incorporation of a metal-carbon triple bond into a ring system is challenging because of the linear nature of triple bonds. To date, the synthesis of these complexes has been limited to those containing third-row transition metal centers, namely, osmium and rhenium. We report the synthesis and full characterization of the first cyclic metal carbyne complex with a second-row transition metal center, ruthenapentalyne. It shows a bond angle of 130.2(3)° around the sp-hybridized carbyne carbon, which represents the recorded smallest angle of second-row transition metal carbyne complexes, as it deviates nearly 50° from the original angle (180°). Density functional theory calculations suggest that the inherent aromatic nature of these metallacycles with bent Ru≡C-C moieties enhances their stability. Reactivity studies showed striking observations, such as ambiphilic reactivity, a metal-carbon triple bond shift, and a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction with alkyne and cascade cyclization reactions with ambident nucleophiles.
