Abstract
Alkyl radicals are key intermediates in organic synthesis. Their classic generation from alkyl halides has a severe drawback due to the employment of toxic tin hydrides to the point that "flight from the tyranny of tin" in radical processes was considered for a long time an unavoidable issue. This review summarizes the main alternative approaches for the generation of unstabilized alkyl radicals, using photons as traceless promoters. The recent development in photochemical and photocatalyzed processes enabled the discovery of a plethora of new alkyl radical precursors, opening the world of radical chemistry to a broader community, thus allowing a new era of photon democracy.

Abstract
Herein, we report a new, efficient and atom-economical strategy for the synthesis of SCF3-substituted tryptanthrin derivatives. These previously unreported derivatives were obtained by means of a radical tandem cyclization. The reaction was triggered by addition of a SCF3 radical to a carbon-carbon double bond and involved the formation of a C(sp3)-SCF3 bond, a C(sp2)-C bond, and a C(sp2)-N bond. This method has mild conditions and a wide range of substrates which is particularly useful for the preparation of substituted indolquinazoline derivatives that widely exist in many natural products, but are not easy to obtain by conventional approaches.

Abstract
Organic ionic compounds, especially those with organic cations, are commonly applied in ionic liquids (ILs), organocatalysts, (a)NHC ligands, ion recognition, and optoelectronic materials. The direct C-H functionalization of organic cations offers valuable opportunities for the rapid assembly of diverse functionalized cations and for their further exploitation in material science applications. This review summarizes the substantial progress that has been made in the C-H functionalization of organic cations from the 1960s to May 2020, including transition metal-mediated/catalyzed C-H alkylation, arylation, and annulation, and photo-induced C-H functionalization. Substrate scopes, limitations, regio-/chemoselectivity, and reaction mechanisms are discussed. In addition, the applications of some new organic functional materials are briefly exemplified. This review also aims to serve as a reminder that much care should be taken when using organic ionic compounds as solvents, because they can behave as reactants that can break up desired coupling reactions.

Abstract
A practical and scalable protocol for visible-light-accelerated arylation and alkylation of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with hydrazines is reported. In this protocol, a hydrazone-based two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COF-1) was employed as the heterogeneous photocatalyst (PC). Due to its excellent photocatalytic properties, good chemical stability and heterogeneous nature, the present method exhibits high efficiency, good functional group tolerance, easy scalability and remarkable catalyst reusability. More importantly, it provides an alternative way that allows rapid access to various C3 arylated or alkylated quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones in a greener and sustainable manner.

Abstract
An electrochemical method has been developed to achieve arylation of electron-deficient arenes through reductive activation. Various electron-deficient arenes and aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates are amenable to this transformation within the conditions of an undivided cell, providing the desired products in up to 92 % yield. Instead of preparing diazonium reagents, these reactions can begin from anilines, and they can be carried out in one pot. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies indicate that cathodic reduction of quinoxaline occurs using the transformation. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry indicates that both quinoxaline and aryl diazonium salt have relatively low reduction potentials, which suggests they can be activated through reduction during the reaction.

Abstract
The polar nature of the C═O bond commonly allows it to undergo direct attack by nucleophiles at the electrophilic carbon atom in which ketones and aldehydes act as alkyl carbocation equivalents. In contrast, transformations in which ketones and aldehydes act as alkyl radical equivalents (generated in carbonyl carbon) are unknown. Here, we describe a new catalytic activation mode that combines proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) with spin-center shift (SCS) and enables C─H alkylation of heteroarenes using ketones and aldehydes as alkyl radical equivalents. This transformation proceeded via reductive PCET activation of the ketones and aldehydes to form α-oxy radicals, addition of the radicals to the N-heteroarenes to form C─C bonds, and SCS to cleave the C─O bonds of the resulting alcohols. This mild protocol represents a general use of abundant, commercially available, ketones and aldehydes as latent alkyl radical equivalents.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the photocatalytic generation of nucleophilic aroyl radicals from simple aroyl chlorides as a universal and efficient cross-coupling strategy for the direct aroylation of heteroarenes. Furthermore, visible light-mediated direct alkylation of heteroarenes has also been achieved using unactivated bromoalkanes as radical precursors. These two strategies feature high functional group tolerance, exclusive regioselectivity for reaction at the more electrophilic position of heteroarenes, easily accessible substrates, and mild reaction conditions. Moreover, mechanism studies of two reactions are carried out to support our hypotheses.

Abstract
A mild, practical method for direct arylation of unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds with heteroarenes has been achieved via photochemistry. Selectfluor is used as a hydrogen atom transfer reagent under visible light irradiation. A diverse range of chemical feedstocks, such as alkanes, ketones, esters, and ethers, and complex molecules readily undergo intermolecular C(sp3)-C(sp2) bond formation. Moreover, a broad array of heteroarenes, including pharmaceutically useful scaffolds, can be alkylated effectively by the protocol presented here.

Abstract
A mild, practical protocol for the decarboxylative alkylation of heteroarenes has been accomplished via iron photocatalysis. A diverse range of carboxylic acids readily undergo oxidative decarboxylation and then couple with a broad array of heteroarenes in this transformation. The photoexcited state lifetimes of iron complexes are typically much shorter than those of iridium and ruthenium complexes. Here we describe our effort on iron photocatalysis by utilizing the intramolecular charge transfer pathway of iron-carboxylate complexes.

Abstract
Recent advances in the metal-catalyzed radical-type transformation of unactivated alkyl halides with C–C bond formation under photoinduced conditions are summarized. Usually, a broad reaction scope is observed including tertiary, secondary, and primary alkyl halides, with good functional group compatibility.
