Engineering negative differential conductance with the Cu(111) surface state

Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are employed to investigate electron tunneling from a C60-terminated tip into a Cu(111) surface. Tunneling between a C60 orbital and the Shockley surface states of copper is shown to produce negative differential conductance (NDC) contrary to conventional expectations. NDC can be tuned through barrier thickness or C60 orientation up to complete extinction. The orientation dependence of NDC is a result of a symmetry matching between the molecular tip and the surface states.

Real-space calculations for electron transport properties of nanostructures

Recent developments in the fabrication and investigation of conductors of atomic dimensions have stimulated a large number of experimental and theoretical studies on these nanoscale devices. In this paper, we introduce examples presenting the efficiencies and advantages of a first-principles transport calculation scheme based on the real-space finite-difference (RSFD) formalism and the overbridging boundary-matching (OBM) method. The RSFD method does not suffer from the artificial periodicity problems that arise in methods using plane-wave basis sets or the linear dependence problems that occur in methods using atomic basis sets. Moreover, the algorithm of the RSFD method is suitable for massively parallel computers and, thus, the combination of the RSFD and OBM methods enables us to execute first-principles transport calculations using large models. To demonstrate the advantages of this method, several applications of the transport calculations in various systems ranging from jellium nanowires to the tip and surface system of scanning tunneling microscopy are presented.

Atomic-scale mechanical properties of orientated C60 molecules revealed by noncontact atomic force microscopy

In this work, the mechanical properties of C(60) molecules adsorbed on Cu(111) are measured by tuning-fork-based noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) and spectroscopy at cryogenic conditions. Site-specific tip-sample force variations are detected above the buckyball structure. Moreover, high-resolution images obtained by nc-AFM show the chemical structure of this molecule and describes unambiguously its orientations on the surface.

High-resolution molecular orbital imaging using a p-wave STM tip

Individual pentacene and naphthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on a bilayer of NaCl grown on Cu(111) were investigated by means of scanning tunneling microscopy using CO-functionalized tips. The images of the frontier molecular orbitals show an increased lateral resolution compared with those of the bare tip and reflect the modulus squared of the lateral gradient of the wave functions. The contrast is explained by tunneling through the p-wave orbitals of the CO molecule. Comparison with calculations using a Tersoff-Hamann approach, including s- and p-wave tip states, demonstrates the significant contribution of p-wave tip states.

Charge injection through single and double carbon bonds

The contact conductance of oriented C(60) molecules is probed with a scanning tunneling microscope as a function of the lateral position of the tip in contact to the molecular cage. Together with first principles calculations, these measurements reveal variations of the efficiency of charge injection to the fullerene molecule with the order of the contacted carbon-carbon bond.

Molecules for organic electronics studied one by one

The electronic and geometrical structure of single difluoro-bora-1,3,5,7-tetraphenyl-aza-dipyrromethene (aza-BODIPY) molecules adsorbed on the Au(111) surface is investigated by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy in conjunction with ab initio density functional theory simulations of the density of states and of the interaction with the substrate. Our DFT calculations indicate that the aza-bodipy molecule forms a chemical bond with the Au(111) substrate, with distortion of the molecular geometry and significant charge transfer between the molecule and the substrate. Nevertheless, most likely due to the low corrugation of the Au(111) surface, diffusion of the molecule is observed for applied bias in excess of 1 V.

Unambiguous one-molecule conductance measurements under ambient conditions

One of the challenging goals of molecular electronics is to wire exactly one molecule between two electrodes. This is generally nontrivial under ambient conditions. We describe a new and straightforward protocol for unambiguously isolating a single organic molecule on a metal surface and wiring it inside a nanojunction under ambient conditions. Our strategy employs C(60) terminal groups which act as molecular beacons allowing molecules to be visualized and individually targeted on a gold surface using an scanning tunneling microscope. After isolating one molecule, we then use the C(60) groups as alligator clips to wire it between the tip and surface. Once wired, we can monitor how the conductance of a purely one molecule junction evolves with time, stretch the molecule in the junction, observing characteristic current plateaus upon elongation, and also perform direct I-V spectroscopy. By characterizing and controlling the junction, we can draw stronger conclusions about the observed variation in molecular conductance than was previously possible.

Atomic-scale engineering of electrodes for single-molecule contacts

The transport of charge through a conducting material depends on the intrinsic ability of the material to conduct current and on the charge injection efficiency at the contacts between the conductor and the electrodes carrying current to and from the material. According to theoretical considerations, this concept remains valid down to the limit of single-molecule junctions. Exploring this limit in experiments requires atomic-scale control of the junction geometry. Here we present a method for probing the current through a single C(60) molecule while changing, one by one, the number of atoms in the electrode that are in contact with the molecule. We show quantitatively that the contact geometry has a strong influence on the conductance. We also find a crossover from a regime in which the conductance is limited by charge injection at the contact to a regime in which the conductance is limited by scattering at the molecule. Thus, the concepts of 'good' and 'bad' contacts, commonly used in macro- and mesoscopic physics, can also be applied at the molecular scale.
