Calculation of excitation energies of open-shell molecules with spatially degenerate ground states. II. Transformed reference via intermediate configuration Kohn-Sham time dependent density functional theory oscillator strengths and magnetic circular dichroism C terms

An extension of the transformed reference via an intermediate configuration Kohn-Sham time dependent density functional theory (TRICKS-TDDFT) method for calculating the transition energies of molecules with spatially degenerate ground states is proposed that enables oscillator strengths to also be evaluated. The oscillator strengths are calculated starting from a description of the degenerate ground state and the excited states of interest in terms of linear combinations of Slater determinants based upon the F-vectors obtained in the TRICKS-TDDFT calculation. This approach for calculating oscillator strengths can also be applied to several other properties that involve excited states. An example of such a property, the C term of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), is presented. The new method is illustrated through example calculations of the absorbance and MCD spectra of several octahedral and C(4v) d(5) transition metal complexes. The calculated transition energies and oscillator strengths are somewhat too low and too high, respectively, but these errors are within the range that would normally be expected for TDDFT calculations of this type. The calculations help to resolve some previously unexplained problems with the MCD spectra of the C(4v) complexes.

Calculation of excitation energies of open-shell molecules with spatially degenerate ground states. I. Transformed reference via an intermediate configuration Kohn-Sham density-functional theory and applications to d1 and d2 systems with octahedral and tetrahedral symmetries

A method for calculating the UV-vis spectra of molecules with spatially degenerate ground states using time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) is proposed. The new transformed reference via an intermediate configuration Kohn-Sham TDDFT (TRICKS-TDDFT) method avoids the difficulties caused by the multireference nature of spatially degenerate states by rather than utilizing the ground state instead taking a nondegenerate excited state with desirable properties as the reference for the TDDFT calculation. The scope and practical application of the method are discussed. Like all open-shell TDDFT calculations this method at times suffers from the inability to produce transitions to states that are eigenfunctions of the total spin operator. A technique for alleviating this difficulty to some extent is proposed. The applicability and accuracy of the TRICKS-TDDFT method is demonstrated through example calculations of several d(1) and d(2) transition metal complexes with tetrahedral and octahedral symmetries. For the most part, the results of these calculations are similar in quality to to those obtained from standard TDDFT calculations.

Density-functional theory-based chemical reactivity indices in the Hartree-Fock method. I. Unrestricted Hartree-Fock method for a noninteger number of electrons

Correct evaluation of the reactivity indices, such as chemical potential, hardness, and Fukui function demands for the extension of the formalism beyond the integer particle picture. An ensemble approach is used as an extension of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) method for noninteger electron number systems. A prescription is given for the construction of an ensemble Fock operator for a system with partially filled spin-orbitals. The comparison between the ensemble HF method and the hyper-HF method in terms of density matrices and spin-orbitals is presented. The equivalence of the equiensemble case and the ensemble UHF case with unequal weight factors is shown.

Exchange-correlation potentials for high-electron-density ions in the Be isoelectronic series

Accurate reference wave functions and their densities have been used to obtain accurate exchange-correlation potentials for the beryllium isoelectronic sequence Be, Ne(+6), Ar(+14), and Kr(+32). The exchange-correlation potentials for the four-electron cations with high Z in this sequence exhibit structure prior to the intershell peak that is not present in neutral atoms. The kinetic energy contribution to the exchange-correlation potential contributes to the early structure as well as to the intershell peak. The near degeneracy in this four-electron sequence plays a significant role in the structure prior to the intershell peak. Several of the quantities on which the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhoff and Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria functionals are dependent are examined. The generalized gradient approximations appear not to account for the near degeneracy in this series.

Potential functionals: dual to density functionals and solution to the v-representability problem

A functional of external potentials and its variational principle for the ground-state energy is constructed. This potential functional formulation is dual to the density functional approach and provides a solution to the v-representability problem in the original Hohenberg-Kohn theory. A second potential functional for Kohn-Sham noninteracting systems establishes the foundation for the optimized effective potential approach and results in efficient approaches for ensemble Kohn-Sham calculations.

Relativistic all-electron two-component self-consistent density functional calculations including one-electron scalar and spin–orbit effects

We have implemented a Gaussian basis-set two-component self-consistent field method based on the fourth-order nuclear-only Douglas-Kroll-Hess approximation. Two-electron spin-orbit effects are included using Boettger's screened-nuclear spin-orbit approximation. In our two-component approach, the spin-orbit interaction is taken into account in a variational fashion employing a generalized Kohm-Sham scheme which allows one to work with hybrid density functionals. For open-shell systems we adopt the noncollinear spin-density approximation. Results are presented for equilibrium bond lengths, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and bond dissociation energies with local spin-density, generalized gradient approximation, and hybrid functionals in a set of benchmark molecules.

Multireference spin-adapted variant of density functional theory

A new Kohn-Sham formalism is developed for studying the lowest molecular electronic states of given space and spin symmetry whose densities are represented by weighted sums of several reference configurations. Unlike standard spin-density functional theory, the new formalism uses total spin conserving spin-density operators and spin-invariant density matrices so that the method is fully spin-adapted and solves the so-called spin-symmetry dilemma. The formalism permits the use of an arbitrary set of reference (noninteracting) configurations with any number of open shells. It is shown that the requirement of degeneracy of the total noninteracting energies of the reference configurations (or configuration state functions) is equivalent to the stationary condition of the exact energy relative to the weights of the configurations (or configuration state functions). Consequently, at any molecular geometry, the weights can be determined by minimization of the energy, and, for given reference weights, the Kohn-Sham orbitals can be determined. From this viewpoint, the developed theory can be interpreted as an analog of the multiconfiguration self-consistent field approach within density functional theory.

Quantal density functional theory of degenerate states

The treatment of degenerate states within Kohn-Sham density functional theory is a problem of long-standing and current interest. We propose a solution to this mapping from the interacting degenerate system to that of the noninteracting fermion model whereby the equivalent density and energy are obtained via the unifying physical framework of quantal density functional theory. We describe the quantal theory of both ground and excited degenerate states, and for the cases of both pure state and ensemble v-representable densities. The quantal description further provides a rigorous physical interpretation of the corresponding Kohn-Sham energy functionals of the density, ensemble density, bidensity and ensemble bidensity, and of their respective functional derivatives. We conclude with examples of the mappings within the quantal theory.

Degeneracy in density functional theory: topology in the v and n spaces

This paper clarifies the topology of the mapping between the v and n spaces in fermionic systems. Density manifolds corresponding to degeneracies g=1 and g>1 are shown to have the same mathematical measure: Every density near a g-ensemble-v-representable (g-VR) n(r) is also g-VR (except "boundary densities" of lower measure). The role of symmetry and the connection between T=0 and T=0(+) are discussed. A lattice model and the Be series are used as illustrations.

Spurious interactions, and their correction, in the ensemble-Kohn-Sham scheme for excited States

We observe that the direct Coulomb (Hartree) term appearing in the ensemble-density-functional theory for excited states contains an unphysical ("ghost") interaction which has to be corrected by the ensemble exchange and correlation functional. We propose a simple additive correction to the conventional ensemble exchange energy in the form of an orbital functional. By treating this corrected exchange energy functional self-consistently within the optimized effective potential method one finds a significant improvement of atomic excitation energies.
