N2 binding affinity decreases markedly in a series of isostructural U(iii)–alkali ions complexes with increasing cation size. N2 binding is undetectable in the Cs analogue, but the first example of cesium-assisted N2 cleavage to bis-nitride was observed at ambient condition.

Computational screening of highly selective and active electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction on single-atom-embedded artificial holey SnN3 monolayers

Billowy interest during nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for single-atom catalysts (SACs) has been evoked by the discovery of single transition metal (TM) atom structures featured by TM-N_x coordinate sites as an excellent catalytic center. However, a great challenge of currently available SACs, far away from industrial requirement, is the low activity and poor selectivity. Therefore, in NRR, the first-principles high-throughput screening calculations were performed to evaluate the feasibility of a single TM atom (from Sc to Au) embedded an artificial holey defective SnN₃ (d-SnN₃) monolayer. Here, all TM atoms can be stably anchored on d-SnN₃ (TM/d-SnN₃), meanwhile, most of adsorbed N₂ molecules can be favorably activated via the "σ donation - π* back-donation" interaction. Eventually, among 27 TM centers, V, Mo, Hf and Ta/d-SnN₃ stand out because of extremely low limiting potential (-0.21, -0.40, -0.56 and -0.54 V, respectively), lower than majority of TM-based NRR catalysts and far below that of the Ru (0001) surface (0.98 V), indicative of fast kinetics and low energy cost of NRR. Moreover, their intrinsic characteristic, such as centralized spin-polarization on these TM atoms, high-efficient prohibition of the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction is responsible for high selectivity with theoretical faradic efficiency of 100%. Also, multiple-level descriptors including ΔG_∗N, ICOHP, and Φ were used to make the source of NRR activity clear, realizing an efficient and quick prescreening among different candidates. Particularly, their excellent durability, kinetic stability and synthetic accessibility guarantee the feasibility in real experimental conditions.

Emerging two-dimensional nanomaterials for electrochemical nitrogen reduction

Ammonia (NH₃) is essential to serve as the biological building blocks for maintaining organism function, and as the indispensable nitrogenous fertilizers for increasing the yield of nutritious crops. The current Haber-Bosch process for industrial NH₃ production is highly energy- and capital-intensive. In light of this, the electroreduction of nitrogen (N₂) into valuable NH₃, as an alternative, offers a sustainable pathway for the Haber-Bosch transition, because it utilizes renewable electricity and operates under ambient conditions. Identifying highly efficient electrocatalysts remains the priority in the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), marking superior selectivity, activity, and stability. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with sufficient exposed active sites, high specific surface area, good conductivity, rich surface defects, and easily tunable electronic properties hold great promise for the adsorption and activation of nitrogen towards sustainable NRR. Therefore, this Review focuses on the fundamental principles and the key metrics being pursued in NRR. Based on the fundamental understanding, the recent efforts devoted to engineering protocols for constructing 2D electrocatalysts towards NRR are presented. Then, the state-of-the-art 2D electrocatalysts for N₂ reduction to NH₃ are summarized, aiming at providing a comprehensive overview of the structure-performance relationships of 2D electrocatalysts towards NRR. Finally, we propose the challenges and future outlook in this prospective area.

Recent Advances and Perspective on Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis under Ambient Conditions

Ammonia is an essential chemical for agriculture and industry. To date, NH₃ is mainly supplied by the traditional Haber-Bosch process, which is operated under high-temperature and high-pressure in a centralized way. To achieve ammonia production in an environmentally benign way, electrochemical NH₃ synthesis under ambient conditions has become the frontier of energy and chemical conversion schemes, as it can be powered by renewable energy and operates in a decentralized way. The recent progress on developing different strategies for NH₃ production, including 1) classic NH₃ synthesis pathways over nanomaterials; 2) the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism over metal nitrides (MN_x ); 3) reducing the nitrate into NH₃ over Cu-based nanomaterial; and 4) metal-N₂ battery release of NH₃ from Li_x M. Moreover, the most recent advances in engineering strategies for developing highly active materials and the design of the reaction systems for NH₃ synthesis are covered.

Shedding Light on the Role of Chemical Bond in Catalysis of Nitrogen Fixation

Ammonia (NH₃ ) and nitrates are essential for human society because of their widespread utilization for producing medicines, fibers, fertilizers, etc. In recent years, the development on nitrogen fixation under mild reaction conditions has attracted much attention. However, the very low conversion efficiency and ambiguous catalytic mechanism remain the major hurdles for the research of nitrogen fixation. This review aims to clarify the role of chemical bond in catalytic nitrogen fixation by summarizing and analyzing the recent development of nitrogen fixation research. In detail, the atomic-scale mechanism of nitrogen fixation reaction, the various methods to improve the nitrogen fixation performance, and the computational investigation of nitrogen fixation are discussed, all from a chemical bond perspective. It is hoped that this review could trigger more profound pondering and deeper exploration in the field of catalytic nitrogen fixation.

Computational screening of MBene monolayers with high electrocatalytic activity for the nitrogen reduction reaction

As an emerging family of two-dimensional (2D) materials, transition metal borides (MBenes) have attracted increasing interest due to their potential applications in electrochemistry, especially electrocatalysis. In this work, we addressed six MB (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mo and W) monolayers as catalysts to explore their electrocatalytic activity for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) using first-principles calculations. Our results demonstrated that N₂ molecules could be strongly adsorbed on these MB monolayers to provoke the NRR process. Furthermore, we examined five possible catalytic reaction pathways of the NRR, i.e., the alternating, distal, and three mixed pathways, on the MB monolayers with N₂ adsorption (both side-on and end-on) configurations, and screened out three highly efficient NRR catalysts: VB, CrB, and MoB monolayers with the onset potential of -0.396, -0.277, and -0.403 V, respectively. By comparison of the limiting potentials, the most effective reaction pathways of the NRR were ascertained to be the alternating pathway on the VB monolayer with the end-on configuration and the mixed I pathway on the CrB monolayer with the end-on configuration and on the MoB monolayer with the side-on configuration. Our work sheds light on the electrocatalytic mechanisms of the NRR on 2D MBenes, and provides a theoretical foundation for developing highly efficient MBene electrocatalysts for the NRR.

Anchoring an Fe Dimer on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene toward Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis

Electrochemical reduction of N₂ to NH₃ based on sustainable energy is a green technique to produce decentralized and on-demand ammonia. In this work, taking graphene as a design platform, we explore the dual-atom catalysts (DACs) via embedding two homonuclear transition metal (TM) atoms into graphene decorated with four neighboring pyrrolic nitrogen atoms (TM₂N₄@graphene) to computationally screen the qualified nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) catalysts. On the basis of the activity, selectivity, and stability of 15 homonuclear DACs of TM₂N₄@graphene, Fe₂N₄@graphene is identified as the most efficient NRR catalyst with a limiting potential of only -0.32 V. Electronic structure analysis demonstrates that the low oxidation state of Fe (+1) remarkably activates the molecular N₂, which contributes to its excellent NRR catalytic activity. Moreover, the kinetic studies reveal all of the NRR elementary steps exhibiting barriers smaller than that of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), showing that HER is effectively suppressed. In addition, we find that the integral crystal orbital Hamilton population (ICOHP) can be used as a descriptor to describe the Gibbs free energy of each step for its NRR performance. This work not only provides theoretical guidance for designing DACs for NRR but also promotes the understanding of DACs for N₂ fixation.

Catalytic Reduction of N2 to Borylamine at a Molybdenum Complex

Catalytic formation of borylamines from atmospheric N₂ is achieved for the first time using a series of homogenous (triphosphine)Mo complexes. Stepwise functionalization of the (triphosphine)Mo-nitrido complex with chloroborane led to the synthesis of the imido complex. Electrochemical characterization of the (PPP)Mo-nitrido and (PPP)Mo-borylimido complexes showed that the latter is much more easily reduced.

Structure, reactivity, and spectroscopy of nitrogenase-related synthetic and biological clusters

The reduction of dinitrogen (N2) is essential for its incorporation into nucleic acids and amino acids, which are vital to life on earth. Nitrogenases convert atmospheric dinitrogen to two ammonia molecules (NH3) under ambient conditions. The catalytic active sites of these enzymes (known as FeM-cofactor clusters, where M = Mo, V, Fe) are the sites of N2 binding and activation and have been a source of great interest for chemists for decades. In this review, recent studies on nitrogenase-related synthetic molecular complexes and biological clusters are discussed, with a focus on their reactivity and spectroscopic characterization. The molecular models that are discussed span from simple mononuclear iron complexes to multinuclear iron complexes and heterometallic iron complexes. In addition, recent work on the extracted biological cofactors is discussed. An emphasis is placed on how these studies have contributed towards our understanding of the electronic structure and mechanism of nitrogenases.

Stepwise Reduction of Dinitrogen by a Uranium-Potassium Complex Yielding a U(VI)/U(IV) Tetranitride Cluster

Multimetallic cooperativity is believed to play a key role in the cleavage of dinitrogen to nitrides (N^3-), but the mechanism remains ambiguous due to the lack of isolated intermediates. Herein, we report the reduction of the complex [K₂{[U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₃]₂(μ-O)(μ-η²:η²-N₂)}], B, with KC₈, yielding the tetranuclear tetranitride cluster [K₆{(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂U^IV}₃{(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂U^VI}(μ₄-N)₃(μ₃-N)(μ₃-O)₂], 1, a novel example of N₂ cleavage to nitride by a diuranium complex. The structure of complex 1 is remarkable, as it contains a unique uranium center bound by four nitrides and provides the second example of a trans-N═U^VI═N core analogue of UO₂²⁺. Experimental and computational studies indicate that the formation of the U(IV)/U(VI) tetrauranium cluster occurs via successive one-electron transfers from potassium to the bound N₂^4- ligand in complex B, resulting in N₂ cleavage and the formation of the putative diuranium(V) bis-nitride [K₄{[U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₃]₂(μ-O)(μ-N)₂}], X. Additionally, cooperative potassium binding to the U-bound N₂^4- ligand facilitates dinitrogen cleavage during electron transfer. The nucleophilic nitrides in both complexes are easily functionalized by protons to yield ammonia in 93-97% yield and with excess ¹³CO to yield K¹³CN and KN¹³CO. The structures of two tetranuclear U(IV)/U(V) bis- and mononitride clusters isolated from the reaction with CO demonstrate that the nitride moieties are replaced by oxides without disrupting the tetranuclear structure, but ultimately leading to valence redistribution.

Atomic Structural Evolution of Single-Layer Pt Clusters as Efficient Electrocatalysts

The rational synthesis of single-layer noble metal directly anchored on support materials is an elusive target to accomplish for a long time. This paper reports well-defined single-layer Pt (Pt-SL) clusters anchored on ultrathin TiO₂ nanosheets-as a new frontier in electrocatalysis. The structural evolution of Pt-SL/TiO₂ via self-assembly of single Pt atoms (Pt-SA) is systematically recorded. Significantly, the Pt atoms of Pt-SL/TiO₂ possess a unique electronic configuration with PtPt covalent bonds surrounded by abundant unpaired electrons. This Pt-SL/TiO₂ catalyst presents enhanced electrochemical performance toward diverse electrocatalytic reactions (such as the hydrogen evolution reaction and the oxygen reduction reaction) compared with Pt-SA, multilayer Pt nanoclusters, and Pt nanoparticles, suggesting an efficient new type of catalyst that can be achieved by constructing single-layer atomic clusters on supports.

Conversion of Dinitrogen into Nitrile: Cross-Metathesis of N2 -Derived Molybdenum Nitride with Alkynes

The direct synthesis of nitrile from N₂ under mild conditions is of great importance and has attracted much interest. Herein, we report a direct conversion of N₂ into nitrile via a nitrile-alkyne cross-metathesis (NACM) process involving a N₂ -derived Mo nitride. Treatment of the Mo nitride with alkyne in the presence of KOTf afforded an alkyne-coordinated nitride, which was then transformed into Mo^V carbyne and the corresponding nitrile upon 1 e^- oxidation. Both aryl- and alkyl-substituted alkynes underwent this process smoothly. Experiments and DFT calculations have proved that the oxidation state of the Mo center plays a crucial role. This method does not rely on the nucleophilicity of the N₂ -derived metal nitride, offering a novel strategy for N₂ fixation chemistry.

Predicting Dinitrogen Activation via Transition-Metal-Involved [4+2] Cycloaddition Reaction

As the strongest triple bond in nature, the N≡N triple bond activation has always been a challenging project in chemistry. On the other hand, since the award of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1950, the Diels-Alder reaction has served as a powerful and widely applied tool in the synthesis of natural products and new materials. However, the application of the Diels-Alder reaction to dinitrogen activation remains less developed. Here we first demonstrate that a transition-metal-involved [4+2] Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction could be used to activate dinitrogen without an additional reductant by density functional theory calculations. Further study reveals that such a dinitrogen activation by 1-metalla-1,3-dienes screened out from a series of transition metal complexes (38 species) according to the effects of metal center, ligand, and substituents can become favorable both thermodynamically (with an exergonicity of 28.2 kcal mol^-1 ) and kinetically (with an activation energy as low as 13.8 kcal mol^-1 ). Our findings highlight an important application of the Diels-Alder reaction in dinitrogen activation, inviting experimental chemists' verification.

Facet-controlled palladium nanocrystalline for enhanced nitrate reduction towards ammonia

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO₃^-RR) is considered an appealing way for producing ammonia (NH₃) under ambient conditions and solving environmental problems caused by nitrate, whereas the lack of adequate catalysts hampers the development of NO₃^-RR. Here, we firstly demonstrate that the Pd nanocrystalline with a well-desired facet can act as a highly efficient NO₃^-RR electrocatalyst for ambient ammonia synthesis. Pd (1 1 1) exhibits excellent activity and selectivity in reducing NO₃^- to NH₄⁺ with a Faradaic efficiency of 79.91% and an NH₄⁺ production of 0.5485 mmol h^-1 cm^-2 (2.74 mmol h^-1 mg^-1) in 0.1 M Na₂SO₄ (containing 0.1 M NO₃^-), which is 1.4 times higher than Pd (1 0 0) and 1.9 times higher than Pd (1 1 0), respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the superior NO₃^-RR activity of Pd (1 1 1) originates from its optimized activity of NO₃^- adsorption, smaller free energy change of the rate-limiting step (*NH₃ to NH₃), and poorer hydrogen evolution reaction activity (HER, competitive reaction). This work not only highlights the potentials of Pd-based nanocatalysts for NO₃^-RR but also provides new insight for the applications in NO₃^-RR of other facet-orientation nanomaterials.

Alkali-Metal Mediation: Diversity of Applications in Main-Group Organometallic Chemistry

Organolithium compounds have been at the forefront of synthetic chemistry for over a century, as they mediate the synthesis of myriads of compounds that are utilised worldwide in academic and industrial settings. For that reason, lithium has always been the most important alkali metal in organometallic chemistry. Today, that importance is being seriously challenged by sodium and potassium, as the alkali-metal mediation of organic reactions in general has started branching off in several new directions. Recent examples covering main-group homogeneous catalysis, stoichiometric organic synthesis, low-valent main-group metal chemistry, polymerization, and green chemistry are showcased in this Review. Since alkali-metal compounds are often not the end products of these applications, their roles are rarely given top billing. Thus, this Review has been written to alert the community to this rising unifying phenomenon of "alkali-metal mediation".

Pursuit of an Electron Deficient Titanium Nitride

The nitride salt [(PN)₂Ti≡N{μ₂-K(OEt₂)}]₂ (1) (PN^- = (N-(2-PⁱPr₂-4-methylphenyl)-2,4,6-Me₃C₆H₂) can be oxidized with two equiv of I₂ or four equiv of ClCPh₃ to produce the phosphinimide-halide complexes (NPN')(PN)Ti(X) (X^- = I (2), Cl (3); NPN' = N-(2-NPⁱPr₂-4-methylphenyl)-2,4,6-Me₃C₆H₂^2-), respectively. In the case of 2, H₂ was found to be one of the other products; whereas, HCPh₃ and Gomberg's dimer were observed upon the formation of 3. Independent studies suggest that the oxidation of 1 could imply the formation of the transient nitridyl species [(PN)₂Ti(≡N•)] (A), which can either oxidize the proximal phosphine atom to produce the Ti(III) intermediate [(NPN')(PN)Ti] (B) or, alternatively, engage in H atom abstraction to form the parent imido (PN)₂Ti≡NH (4). The latter was independently prepared and was found to photochemically convert to the titanium-hydride, (NPN')(PN)Ti(H) (5). Isotopic labeling studies using (PN)₂Ti≡ND (4-d₁) as well as reactivity studies of 5 with a hydride abstractor demonstrate the presence of the hydride ligand in 5. An alternative route to putative A was observed via a photochemically promoted incomplete reduction of the azide ligand in (PN)₂Ti(N₃) (6) to 4. This process was accompanied by some formation of 5. Frozen matrix X-band EPR studies of 6, performed under photolytic conditions, were consistent with species B being formed under these reaction conditions, originating from a low barrier N-insertion into the phosphine group in the putative nitridyl species A. Computational studies were also undertaken to discover the mechanism and plausibility of the divergent pathways (via intermediates A and B) in the formation of 2 and 3, and to characterize the bonding and electronic structure of the elusive nitrogen-centered radical in A.

Highly efficient ammonia synthesis at low temperature over a Ru-Co catalyst with dual atomically dispersed active centers

The desire for a carbon-free society and the continuously increasing demand for clean energy make it valuable to exploit green ammonia (NH3) synthesis that proceeds via the electrolysis driven Haber-Bosch (eHB) process. The key for successful operation is to develop advanced catalysts that can operate under mild conditions with efficacy. The main bottleneck of NH3 synthesis under mild conditions is the known scaling relation in which the feasibility of N2 dissociative adsorption of a catalyst is inversely related to that of the desorption of surface N-containing intermediate species, which leads to the dilemma that NH3 synthesis could not be catalyzed effectively under mild conditions. The present work offers a new strategy via introducing atomically dispersed Ru onto a single Co atom coordinated with pyrrolic N, which forms RuCo dual single-atom active sites. In this system the d-band centers of Ru and Co were both regulated to decouple the scaling relation. Detailed experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the d-bands of Ru and Co both become narrow, and there is a significant overlapping of t2g and eg orbitals as well as the formation of a nearly uniform Co 3d ligand field, making the electronic structure of the Co atom resemble that of a "free-atom". The "free-Co-atom" acts as a bridge to facilitate electron transfer from pyrrolic N to surface Ru single atoms, which enables the Ru atom to donate electrons to the antibonding π* orbitals of N2, thus resulting in promoted N2 adsorption and activation. Meanwhile, H2 adsorbs dissociatively on the Co center to form a hydride, which can transfer to the Ru site to cause the hydrogenation of the activated N2 to generate N2H x (x = 1-4) intermediates. The narrow d-band centers of this RuCo catalyst facilitate desorption of surface *NH3 intermediates even at 50 °C. The cooperativity of the RuCo system decouples the sites for the activation of N2 from those for the desorption of *NH3 and *N2H x intermediates, giving rise to a favorable pathway for efficient NH3 synthesis under mild conditions.

Systematic Design of a Frustrated Lewis Pair Containing Methyleneborane and Carbene for Dinitrogen Activation

Activation of atmospherically abundant dinitrogen (N₂) by metal-free species under mild reaction conditions has been one of the most challenging areas in chemistry for decades. Very recent but limited progress in N₂ activation by boron species, including two-coordinated borylene and methyleneborane and three-coordinated borole and borane, has been made toward metal-free N₂ activation. Here, we systematically probe an experimentally viable frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) containing two moieties (methyleneborane and carbene) for N₂ activation via density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which has proven to be an efficient approach for N₂ activation in a thermodynamically and kinetically favorable manner. Aromaticity is found to play a crucial role in stabilization of the product. This study could be a valuable alternative for the development of metal-free N₂ activation chemistry, highlighting great potential of FLP for N₂ activation and functionalization.

Tuning metal-metal interactions for cooperative small molecule activation

Cluster complexes have attracted interest for decades due to their promise of drawing analogies to metallic surfaces and metalloenzyme active sites, but only recently have chemists started to develop ligand scaffolds that are specifically designed to support multinuclear transition metal cores. Such ligands not only hold multiple metal centers in close proximity but also allow for fine-tuning of their electronic structures and surrounding steric environments. This Feature Article highlights ligand designs that allow for cooperative small molecule activation at cluster complexes, with a particular focus on complexes that contain metal-metal bonds. Two useful ligand-design elements have emerged from this work: a degree of geometric flexibility, which allows for novel small molecule activation modes, and the use of redox-active ligands to provide electronic flexibility to the cluster core. The authors have incorporated these factors into a unique class of dinucleating macrocycles (nPDI2). Redox-active fragments in nPDI2 mimic the weak-overlap covalent bonding that is characteristic of M-M interactions, and aliphatic linkers in the ligand backbone provide geometric flexibility, allowing for interconversion between a range of geometries as the dinuclear core responds to the requirements of various small molecule substrates. The union of these design elements appears to be a powerful combination for analogizing critical aspects of heterogeneous and metalloenzyme catalysts.

Mechanochemistry for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions

Ammonia, one of the most important synthetic feedstocks, is mainly produced by the Haber-Bosch process at 400-500 °C and above 100 bar. The process cannot be performed under ambient conditions for kinetic reasons. Here, we demonstrate that ammonia can be synthesized at 45 °C and 1 bar via a mechanochemical method using an iron-based catalyst. With this process the ammonia final concentration reached 82.5 vol%, which is higher than state-of-the-art ammonia synthesis under high temperature and pressure (25 vol%, 450 °C, 200 bar). The mechanochemically induced high defect density and violent impact on the iron catalyst were responsible for the mild synthesis conditions.

Dinitrogen Fixation: Rationalizing Strategies Utilizing Molecular Complexes

Dinitrogen (N2 ) is the most abundant gas in Earth's atmosphere, but its inertness hinders its use as a nitrogen source in the biosphere and in industry. Efficient catalysts are hence required to ov. ercome the high kinetic barriers associated to N2 transformation. In that respect, molecular complexes have demonstrated strong potential to mediate N2 functionalization reactions under mild conditions while providing a straightforward understanding of the reaction mechanisms. This Review emphasizes the strategies for N2 reduction and functionalization using molecular transition metal and actinide complexes according to their proposed reaction mechanisms, distinguishing complexes inducing cleavage of the N≡N bond before (dissociative mechanism) or concomitantly with functionalization (associative mechanism). We present here the main examples of stoichiometric and catalytic N2 functionalization reactions following these strategies.

A Xanthene-Based Mono-Anionic PON Ligand: Exploiting a Bulky, Electronically Unsymmetrical Donor in Main Group Chemistry

The synthesis of a novel mono-anionic phosphino-amide ligand based on a xanthene backbone is reported, togetherr with the corresponding GaI complex, (PON)Ga (PON = 4-(di(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)phosphino)-5-(2,6-diisopropylanilido)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene). The solid-state structure of (PON)Ga (obtained from X-ray crystallography) reveals very weak O⋅⋅⋅Ga and P⋅⋅⋅Ga interactions, consistent with a R2 NGa fragment which closely resembles those found in one-coordinate amidogallium systems. Strong N-to-Ga π donation from the amido substituent is reflected in a very short N-Ga distance (1.961(2) Å), while the P⋅⋅⋅Ga contact (3.076(1) Å) is well outside the sum of the respective covalent radii. While the donor properties of the PON ligand towards GaI are highly unsymmetrical, oxidation to GaIII leads to much stronger coordination of the pendant phosphine as shown by P-Ga distances which are up to 20 % shorter. From a steric perspective, the PON ligand is shown to be significantly bulkier than related β-diketiminate systems, a finding consistent with reactions of (PON)Ga towards O-atom sources that proceed without oligomerization. Despite this, the enhanced P-donor properties brought about by oxidation at gallium are not sufficient to quench the reactivity of the highly polar Ga-O unit. Instead, intramolecular benzylic C-H activation is observed across the Ga-O bond of a transient gallanone intermediate.

Synthetic Factors Governing Access to Tris(β-diketimine) Cyclophanes versus Tripodal Tri-β-aminoenones

Tris(β-diketimine) cyclophanes are an important ligand class for investigating cooperative multimetallic interactions of bioinorganic clusters. Discussed herein are the synthetic factors governing access to tris(β-diketimine) cyclophanes versus tripodal tri-β-aminoenones. Cyclophanes bearing Me, Et, and MeO cap substituents and β-Me, Et, or Ph arm substituents are obtained, and a modified condensation method produced α-Me β-Me cyclophane. These operationally simple procedures produce the ligands in gram quantities and in 22-94% yields.

Low-Symmetry β-Diketimine Aryloxide Rare-Earth Complexes: Flexible, Reactive, and Selective

We report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a new low-symmetry β-diketimine featuring a pendant amino(methyl)phenol donor and its corresponding heteroleptic rare-earth (RE) complexes. This includes the first structurally characterized examples of alcoholysis and insertion from an isolated RE^III amide in a β-diketimine framework. The flexible methylene linkage leads to RE^III complexes with tunable dynamic solution behavior that defines their stoichiometric and catalytic reactivity. The addition of a strong neutral donor ligand, tricyclohexylphosphine oxide, suppresses a prevalent catalyst degradation pathway (base-promoted elimination) and dramatically enhances the catalyst performance in the stereospecific ring-opening polymerization of rac-β-butyrolactone. Our results further demonstrate the importance of ligand reorganization in the stoichiometric and catalytic activity of RE^III ions.

Counterion Dependence of Dinitrogen Activation and Functionalization by a Diniobium Hydride Anion

We report the synthesis of anionic diniobium hydride complexes with a series of alkali metal cations (Li⁺ , Na⁺ , and K⁺ ) and the counterion dependence of their reactivity with N₂ . Exposure of these complexes to N₂ initially produces the corresponding side-on end-on N₂ complexes, the fate of which depends on the nature of countercations. The lithium derivative undergoes stepwise migratory insertion of the hydride ligands onto the aryloxide units, yielding the end-on bridging N₂ complex. For the potassium derivative, the N-N bond cleavage takes place along with H₂ elimination to form the nitride complex. Treatment of the side-on end-on N₂ complex with Me₃ SiCl results in silylation of the terminal N atom and subsequent N-N bond cleavage along with H₂ elimination, giving the nitride-imide-bridged diniobium complex.
