Abstract
The direct amination of aliphatic C-H bonds has remained one of the most tantalizing transformations in organic chemistry. Herein, we report on a unique catalyst system, which enables the elusive intermolecular C(sp3 )-H amination. This practical synthetic strategy provides access to aminated building blocks and fosters innovative multiple C-H amination within a new approach to aminated heterocycles. The synthetic utility is demonstrated by the synthesis of four relevant pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
As an anode for lithium-ion batteries, metallic bismuth (Bi) can provide a superb volumetric capacity of 3800 mA h cm-3, showing perspective value for application. It is a pity that the severe volume swelling during the lithiation process leads to the dramatic deterioration of the cycling performances. To overcome this issue, Bi nanorods encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes (yolk-shell Bi@C-N) are elaborately designed through in situ thermal reduction of Bi2S3@polypyrrole nanorods. In comparison with the commercial Bi, the lithium storage capacities of Bi@C-N are significantly enhanced, and it presents a stable volumetric capacity of 1700 mA h cm-3 over 500 cycles at a high current density of 1.0 A g-1, nearly 2.2 times that of graphite. The N-doped carbon nanotube and the cavity between the carbon wall and Bi jointly contribute to this superior performance. Especially, the failure mechanism of Bi nanorods and the protective effect of the carbon shell are revealed by ex situ TEM, which illuminates the decreasing tendency in the initial 10-20 cycles and the subsequent stable trend of cyclic performance.

Abstract
An iodine-catalyzed strategy for β C–H amination of alcohols is enabled by a chemo-, regio-, and stereo-selective H-atom transfer mechanism.
The first catalytic strategy to harness imidate radicals for C–H functionalization has been developed. This iodine-catalyzed approach enables β C–H amination of alcohols by an imidate-mediated radical relay. In contrast to our first-generation, (super)stoichiometric protocol, this catalytic method enables faster and more efficient reactivity. Furthermore, lower oxidant concentration affords broader functional group tolerance, including alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, carbonyls, and heteroarenes. Mechanistic experiments interrogating the electronic nature of the key 1,5 H-atom transfer event are included, as well as probes for chemo-, regio-, and stereo-selectivity.

Abstract
An efficient and “green” protocol for the synthesis of 3-acylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines through intramolecular oxidative α-amination of carbonyl compounds has been developed. The reaction proceeds smoothly utilizing I2 as a catalyst and H2O2 as an oxidant under neat condition with broad substrate scope. Several complex nitrogen-containing fused rings are conveniently constructed, which are not easy to access by traditional methods. An efficient and green protocol for the synthesis of 3-acylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines utilizing I2 as a catalyst and H2O2 as an oxidant under neat condition or in water was developed.![]()

Abstract
A new Pd nanoparticle loaded and imidazolium-ionic liquid decorated organic polymer of Pd@PTC-POP was readily fabricated via a Pd(PPh3)4 catalysed in situ one-pot Suzuki cross-coupling reaction between imidazolium attached dibromobenzene and 1,3,5-tri(4-pinacholatoborolanephenyl)benzene. Besides the high thermal and chemical stability, the obtained Pd@PTC-POP can be used as a highly active and reusable phase-transfer solid catalyst to promote the Sonogashira coupling reaction in water. The obtained results indicate that the Pd@PTC-POP herein could create a versatile family of solid phase transfer catalysts for promoting a broad scope of reactions carried out in water. A Pd nanoparticle loaded and imidazolium-ionic liquid decorated organic polymer, which can be used as a highly active phase-transfer solid catalyst to promote the Sonogashira reaction in water, was reported.![]()

Abstract
Carboxylic acids and their corresponding carboxylate anions are generally utilized as Brønsted acids/bases and oxygen nucleophiles in organic synthesis. However, a few asymmetric reactions have used carboxylic acids as electrophiles. Although chiral thioureas bearing both arylboronic acid and tertiary amine were found to promote the aza-Michael addition of BnONH2 to α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids with moderate to good enantioselectivities, the reaction mechanism remains to be clarified. Detailed investigation of the reaction using spectroscopic analysis and kinetic studies identified tetrahedral borate complexes, comprising two carboxylate anions, as reaction intermediates. We realized a dramatic improvement in product enantioselectivity with the addition of 1 equiv of benzoic acid. In this aza-Michael reaction, the boronic acid not only activates the carboxylate ligand as a Lewis acid, together with the thiourea NH-protons, but also functions as a Brønsted base through a benzoyloxy anion to activate the nucleophile. Moreover, molecular sieves were found to play an important role in generating the ternary borate complexes, which were crucial for obtaining high enantioselectivity as demonstrated by DFT calculations. We also designed a new thiourea catalyst for the intramolecular oxa-Michael addition to suppress another catalytic pathway via a binary borate complex using steric hindrance between the catalyst and substrate. Finally, to demonstrate the synthetic versatility of both hetero-Michael additions, we used them to accomplish the asymmetric synthesis of key intermediates in pharmaceutically important molecules, including sitagliptin and α-tocopherol.

Abstract
An ammonium iodide/hydrogen peroxide-mediated intramolecular oxidative amination of 3-aminoalkyl-2-oxindoles was achieved, affording the corresponding 3,2'-pyrrolidinyl spirooxindoles and their 6- or 7-membered analogous in moderate to high yields. This metal-free procedure features very mild reaction conditions, non-toxicity and easily handled hydrogen peroxide as a clean oxidant.

Abstract
Catalytic enantioselective halocyclization of 2-alkenylphenols and enamides have been achieved through the use of chiral amidophosphate catalysts and halo-Lewis acids. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the Lewis basicity of the catalyst played an important role in the reactivity and enantioselectivity. The resulting chiral halogenated chromans can be transformed to α-Tocopherol, α-Tocotrienol, Daedalin A and Englitazone in short steps. Furthermore, a halogenated product with an unsaturated side chain may provide polycyclic adducts under radical cyclization conditions.

Abstract
The potential of homogeneous oxidation catalysis employing bromine has remained largely unexplored. We herein show that the combination of a tetraalkylammonium bromide and meta-chloroperbenzoic acid offers a unique catalyst system for the convenient and selective oxidation of saturated C(sp3 )-H bonds upon photochemical initiation with day light. This approach enables remote, intramolecular, position-selective C-H amination as demonstrated for 20 different examples. For the first time, an N-halogenated intermediate was isolated as the active catalyst state in a catalytic Hofmann-Löffler reaction. In addition, an expeditious one-pot synthesis of N-sulfonyl oxaziridines from N-sulfonamides was developed and exemplified for 15 transformations. These pioneering examples provide a change in paradigm for molecular catalysis with bromine.

Abstract
The implementation of chiral iodine catalysis has tremendously been developed in the field of asymmetric synthesis over the past decade. It enables the stereoselective creation of C-O as well as C-C, C-N and C-X (X = halogen) bonds through oxidative transformations. Thanks to the low toxicity and ease of handling of iodine compounds, this strategy offers many advantages over classical metal-catalyzed oxidations with chiral ligands. The approaches rely on iodine(i/iii) or (-i/+i) catalysis by using a chiral aryliodine or ammonium iodide respectively in combination with a suitable terminal oxidant. As such, the design of iodine compounds with central, axial or even planar chirality has allowed us to achieve high enantioselectivities. The goal of this review is to cover the different chiral iodine compound-catalyzed oxidative transformations including α-functionalization of carbonyl compounds, dearomatization of phenol derivatives and difunctionalization of alkenes which should demonstrate that iodine catalysis has now found its place in the realm of asymmetric organocatalysis.

Abstract
Aromatic hydroxylation of pseudocumene (1 a) and mesitylene (1 b) with P450 BM3 yields key phenolic building blocks for α-tocopherol synthesis. The P450 BM3 wild-type (WT) catalyzed selective aromatic hydroxylation of 1 b (94 %), whereas 1 a was hydroxylated to a large extent on benzylic positions (46-64 %). Site-saturation mutagenesis generated a new P450 BM3 mutant, herein named "variant M3" (R47S, Y51W, A330F, I401M), with significantly increased coupling efficiency (3- to 8-fold) and activity (75- to 230-fold) for the conversion of 1 a and 1 b. Additional π-π interactions introduced by mutation A330F improved not only productivity and coupling efficiency, but also selectivity toward aromatic hydroxylation of 1 a (61 to 75 %). Under continuous nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate recycling, the novel P450 BM3 variant M3 was able to produce the key tocopherol precursor trimethylhydroquinone (3 a; 35 % selectivity; 0.18 mg mL-1 ) directly from 1 a. In the case of 1 b, overoxidation leads to dearomatization and the formation of a valuable p-quinol synthon that can directly serve as an educt for the synthesis of 3 a. Detailed product pattern analysis, substrate docking, and mechanistic considerations support the hypothesis that 1 a binds in an inverted orientation in the active site of P450 BM3 WT, relative to P450 BM3 variant M3, to allow this change in chemoselectivity. This study provides an enzymatic route to key phenolic synthons for α-tocopherols and the first catalytic and mechanistic insights into direct aromatic hydroxylation and dearomatization of trimethylbenzenes with O2 .

Abstract
N-alkenyl maleimides are found to exhibit spin state-specific chemoselectivities for [2 + 2] and [5 + 2] photocycloadditions; but, reaction mechanism is still unclear. In this work, we have used high-level electronic structure methods (DFT, CASSCF, and CASPT2) to explore [2 + 2] and [5 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction paths of an N-alkenyl maleimide in the S1 and T1 states as well as relevant photophysical processes. It is found that in the S1 state [5 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction is barrierless and thus overwhelmingly dominant; [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction is unimportant because of its large barrier. On the contrary, in the T1 state [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction is much more favorable than [5 + 2] photocyclo-addition reaction. Mechanistically, both S1 [5 + 2] and T1 [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reactions occur in a stepwise, nonadiabatic means. In the S1 [5 + 2] reaction, the secondary C atom of the ethenyl moiety first attacks the N atom of the maleimide moiety forming an S1 intermediate, which then decays to the S0 state as a result of an S1 → S0 internal conversion. In the T1 [2 + 2] reaction, the terminal C atom of the ethenyl moiety first attacks the C atom of the maleimide moiety, followed by a T1 → S0 intersystem crossing process to the S0 state. In the S0 state, the second CC bond is formed. Our present computational results not only rationalize available experiments but also provide new mechanistic insights. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Chiral phase-transfer catalysis is one of the major catalytic principles in asymmetric catalysis. A broad variety of different catalysts and their use for challenging applications have been reported over the last decades. Besides asymmetric C–C bond forming reactions the use of chiral phase-transfer catalysts for enantioselective α-heterofunctionalization reactions of prochiral nucleophiles became one of the most important field of application of this catalytic principle. Based on several highly spectacular recent reports, we thus wish to discuss some of the most important achievements in this field within the context of this review.

Abstract
Tertiary alcohol precursors of both C2 diastereoisomers of α-tocopherol were prepared in three ways by our recently reported asymmetric Grignard synthesis. The versatility of Grignard chemistry inherent in its three-way disconnection was exploited to allow the synthesis of three product grades: 77 : 23 dr (5 steps), 81 : 19 dr (5 steps) and 96 : 4 dr (7 steps, one gram scale) from readily available and abundant starting materials. The products were converted to their respective α-tocopherols in 3 steps, which allowed a definitive re-assignment of their absolute configurations.

Abstract
We present a metal-free method for α-acetoxyarone synthesis by self-intermolecular oxidative coupling of aryl ketones using I2−tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). Under the optimum conditions, various aryl ketones gave the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields. A series of control experiments were performed; the results suggest the involvement of radical pathways. Multiple radical intermediates were generated in situ and the overall process involved several different reactions, which proceeded self-sequentially in a single reactor. A labeling experiment using 18O-labeled H2O confirmed that the oxygen in the product was derived from TBHP, not from H2O in the TBHP solvent.

Abstract
An unprecedented method that makes use of the cooperative interplay between molecular iodine and photoredox catalysis has been developed for dual light-activated intramolecular benzylic C-H amination. Iodine serves as the catalyst for the formation of a new C-N bond by activating a remote Csp3 -H bond (1,5-HAT process) under visible-light irradiation while the organic photoredox catalyst TPT effects the reoxidation of the molecular iodine catalyst. To explain the compatibility of the two involved photochemical steps, the key N-I bond activation was elucidated by computational methods. The new cooperative catalysis has important implications for the combination of non-metallic main-group catalysis with photocatalysis.

Abstract
The catalytic, enantioselective, cyclization of phenols with electrophilic sulfenophthalimides onto isolated or conjugated alkenes affords 2,3-disubstituted benzopyrans and benzoxepins. The reaction is catalyzed by a BINAM-based phosphoramide Lewis base catalyst which assists in the highly enantioselective formation of a thiiranium ion intermediate. The influence of nucleophile electron density, alkene substitution pattern, tether length and Lewis base functional groups on the rate, enantio- and site-selectivity for the cyclization is investigated. The reaction is not affected by the presence of substituents on the phenol ring. In contrast, substitutions around the alkene strongly affect the reaction outcome. Sequential lengthening of the tether results in decreased reactivity, which necessitated increased temperatures for reaction to occur. Sterically bulky aryl groups on the sulfenyl moiety prevented erosion of enantiomeric composition at these elevated temperatures. Alcohols and carboxylic acids preferentially captured thiiranium ions in competition with phenolic hydroxyl groups. An improved method for the selective C(2) allylation of phenols is also described.

Abstract
A catalytic [3 + 1]-annulation reaction between cyclopropane 1,1-diester and aromatic amine is developed based on the relay catalysis strategy. Lewis acid-catalyzed nucleophilic ring opening of cyclopropane 1,1-diester with aromatic amine and (hypo)iodite-catalyzed C-N bond formation are combined successfully in one reaction. Using this reaction, biologically important azetidines and tetrahydroquinolines can be prepared directly.
