A new Klebsiella planticola strain (Cd-1) grows anaerobically at high cadmium concentrations and precipitates cadmium sulfide

Cadmium(II) removal by a hyperaccumulator fungus Phoma sp. F2 isolated from blende soil

A cadmium(II)-resistant fungus, strain F2, isolated from blende soil was identified as Phoma sp. by morphological study and internal transcribed spacer sequencing. This strain could accumulate 280 mg of Cd(II)/g dry weight mycelium. In liquid medium containing 163.8 mg Cd(II)/L, 96% of Cd(II) was removed by the actively growing mycelium. In addition, both oven-dried and lyophilized mycelium could effectively adsorb Cd(II). There were removed 91% and 46.2% of Cd(II) from 51.6 mg Cd(II)/L solution by lyophilized biomass and oven-dried biomass respectively. Transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis showed the accumulation of Cd(II) in the mycelium cell walls. Our results demonstrated that Phoma sp. F2 was a hyperaccumulator for the removal of Cd(II) from contaminated soil and water.

Mercury tolerance of thermophilic Bacillus sp. and Ureibacillus sp

Although resistance of microorganisms to Hg(II) salts has been widely investigated and resistant strains have been reported from many eubacterial genera, there are few reports of mercuric ion resistance in extremophilic microorganisms. Moderately thermophilic mercury resistant bacteria were selected by growth at 62 degrees C on Luria agar containing HgCl(2). Sequence analysis of 16S rRNA genes of two isolates showed the closest matches to be with Bacillus pallidus and Ureibacillus thermosphaericus. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for HgCl(2) were 80 microg/ml and 30 microg/ml for these isolates, respectively, compared to 10 microg/ml for B. pallidus H12 DSM3670, a mercury-sensitive control. The best-characterised mercury-resistant Bacillus strain, B. cereus RC607, had an MIC of 60 microg/ml. The new isolates had negligible mercuric reductase activity but removed Hg from the medium by the formation of a black precipitate, identified as HgS by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. No volatile H(2)S was detected in the headspace of cultures in the absence or presence of Hg(2+), and it is suggested that a new mechanism of Hg tolerance, based on the production of non-volatile thiol species, may have potential for decontamination of solutions containing Hg(2+) without production of toxic volatile H(2)S.

Indigenous heavy metal multiresistant microbiota of Las Catonas stream

Las Catonas stream (Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area) receives a complex mixture of pollutants from point and diffuse sources because of the agricultural, industrial and urban land uses of its basin. Widespread detection of heavy metals exceeding aquatic life protection levels has occurred in monitoring reconnaissance studies in surface and pore water. As a result of the screening of Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb resistant/tolerant and culturable microbiota, B101N and 200H strains (Pseudomonas fluorescens or putida) were isolated and selected for further studies. They showed 65% Cd and 35% Zn extraction efficiency from aqueous phase. The potential use of these strains in wastewater treatment is currently investigated in order to contribute to decrease heavy metal pollution, a problem affecting every stream of Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area.

Microbial detoxification of metals and radionuclides

Microorganisms have important roles in the biogeochemical cycling of toxic metals and radionuclides. Recent advances have been made in understanding metal-microbe interactions and new applications of these processes to the detoxification of metal and radionuclide contamination have been developed.
