Catecholamine release, growth hormone secretion, and energy expenditure during exercise vs. recovery in men

Growth hormone response to graded exercise intensities is attenuated and the gender difference abolished in older adults

We investigated the joint impact of age, gender, and exercise intensity on growth hormone (GH) secretion. At a university center, nine young men, eight young women, seven older men, and six older women were each tested on six randomly ordered occasions [control (C) and 5 exercise conditions (Ex)]. Serum GH concentrations were measured by immunochemiluminometry [10-min samples: 0700-0900 (baseline); 0900-1300 (C or Ex + recovery)]. Integrated GH concentrations (IGHC) were calculated by trapezoidal reconstruction, and GH secretion was modeled by deconvolution analyses. Subjects exercised from 0900 to 0930 at graded intensities [standardized to individual lactate threshold (LT)] of 25 and 75% of the difference between rest and LT, LT, and 25 and 75% of the difference between LT and peak oxygen consumption. Data were analyzed via mixed-effects ANOVA for repeated measures with post hoc contrasts. We found that 1) Ex elevated IGHC above C in all four cohorts, 2) 1.75 LT Ex resulted in maximal IGHC, 3) IGHC differed by gender in young (women > men) but not older adults, 4) older adults secreted 50% less GH during graded exercise, 5) Ex selectively augmented the mass of GH secreted per burst, and 6) higher Ex + recovery IGHC in young women was due to higher baseline IGHC, rather than greater stimulated GH secretion. We conclude that young women manifest a greater absolute and incremental IGHC response to exercise than postmenopausal women and men of any age. Age diminishes the GH response to exercise and abolishes the young-adult gender difference. Attenuation of GH responses to all exercise intensities in older adults has implications for exercise prescription because higher exercise intensities may be required to stimulate GH release in older adults.

GH secretion in acute exercise may result in post-exercise lipolysis

Exercise is a potent stimulator of growth hormone (GH) secretion. We hypothesised that after a short bout of intense exercise GH may increase lipolysis during recovery. In 7 moderately trained young male subjects (21.8 +/- 0.5 years) and 7 moderately trained older male subjects (56.0 +/- 1.0 years) [(2)H(5)] glycerol was infused for 370min to measure glycerol production rate (R(a)), a measure of lipolysis. At 130 min subjects exercised on a cycle ergonometer for 20 min at 70% V(O2 max), followed by rest for 220 min. On a separate occasion the study was repeated in the young subjects with a 1h GH infusion (4microgkg(-1)h(-1)) at 130 min instead of exercise. In response to exercise, catecholamines (p < 0.02) and glycerol R(a) (p < 0.01) increased, peaking during exercise. GH concentration increased in response to exercise (p < 0.01), peaking after exercise (150-160 min) in both groups with no significant difference in peak response between groups. A post-exercise rise in glycerol R(a) was demonstrated in both groups peaking at 265-295 min in the older group (p < 0.002, peak vs. basal) and continuing to rise until 370 min in the young group (p < 0.01, peak vs. basal). The timing and magnitude of this was reproduced with the GH infusion. There was a significant correlation between the peak GH response to exercise and the post-exercise rise in glycerol R(a) measured as area under the curve (r=0.57, p < 0.04). In conclusion, this study provides evidence that the GH response to acute exercise may increase lipolysis during recovery.

Maximizing acute fat utilization: effects of exercise, food, and individual characteristics

In discussion of the physiological mechanisms that regulate fat metabolism, and with consideration of the metabolic stimuli that modulate substrate metabolism, the issue of how an acute state of negative lipid balance can be maximized is addressed. The regulation of lipolysis by catecholamines and insulin is reviewed, and the mechanisms of fatty acid mobilization and uptake by muscle are also briefly discussed. The implications of substrate availability and the hormonal response during physiological states such as fasting, exercise, and after food intake are also addressed, with particular regard to the influences on fatty acid mobilization and/or oxidation from eliciting these stimuli conjointly. Finally, a brief discussion is given of both the nature of exercise and the exercising individual, and how these factors influence fat metabolism during exercise. It is also a primary thrust of this paper to underline gaps in the existing literature with regard to exercise timing concerning food ingestion for maximizing acute lipid utilization.

Human growth hormone responses to repeated bouts of sprint exercise with different recovery periods between bouts

This study examined the growth hormone (GH) response to repeated bouts of sprint cycling. Eight healthy men completed three trials consisting of two 30-s sprints on a cycle ergometer separated by either 60 min (Trial A) or 240 min (Trial B) of recovery and a single 30-s sprint carried out the day after Trial B (Trial C). Trials A and B were separated by at least 7 days. Blood samples were obtained at rest and during recovery from each sprint. In Trial A, GH was elevated immediately before sprint 2, and there was no further increase in GH following the second sprint [area under the curve: 460 (SD 348) vs. 226 min.mug(-1).l(-1) (SD 182), P = 0.05]. Free insulin-like growth factor I tended to be lower immediately before sprint 2 than sprint 1 (P = 0.06). Serum free fatty acids were not different immediately before each of the sprints. In Trial B, there was a trend for a smaller GH response to the second sprint [GH area under the curve: 512 (SD 396) vs. 242 min.mug(-1).l(-1) (SD 190), P = 0.09]. Free insulin-like growth factor I tended to be lower (P = 0.06), and serum free fatty acids were higher (P = 0.01) immediately before sprint 2 than sprint 1. There was no difference in the GH response to sprinting on consecutive days (Trials B and C). In conclusion, repeated bouts of sprint cycling on the same day result in an attenuation or even ablation of the exercise-induced increase in GH, depending on the recovery interval between sprints.

Hormone and Lipolytic Responses to Whole Body Vibration in Young Men

This study examined the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) on the hormone and lipolytic responses. Eight male subjects performed WBV and control (CON) trials on separate days. The WBV session consisted of 10 sets of vibration for a duration of 60 s with rest periods of 60 s between each set (frequency 26 Hz). The subjects maintained a static squat position with knees bent on the platform. In the CON trial, the WBV stimulation was not imposed. Blood samples were collected before both trials and during the recovery period. In the WBV trial, the concentrations of plasma epinephrine (Epi) and norepinephrine (NE) increased immediately after the session (P < 0.05). Serum free fatty acids (FFA) concentration increased significantly at the 150, 180, and 210 min points of the recovery period in the WBV trial (P < 0.01) with the interaction between trial and time (P < 0.01). Serum glycerol showed no significant change in either trial. These results suggest that the WBV session causes secretions of Epi and NE, and it subsequently increases FFA concentration during the recovery period. However, because the FFA response was inconsistent with that of glycerol, we were unable to clarify the effect of WBV exposure on lipolysis.

Neuroendocrine control of GH release during acute aerobic exercise

GH secretion declines with aging and is decreased in conditions such as obesity. Several physiologic factors alter pulsatile GH secretion, including age, gender, body composition, regional distribution of fat and in particular abdominal visceral fat, sleep, nutrition, exercise and serum concentrations of gonadal steroids, insulin and IGF-I. Acute aerobic exercise is a powerful stimulus to GH release. Available studies suggest that intensity and duration of acute exercise, fitness, and training state may all influence, in part, the GH response to exercise. Intensity of exercise plays a key role in GH response to exercise. In the present paper we will discuss the GH response during acute aerobic exercise with a focus on exercise intensity and GH release. We will also provide an overview of the neuroendocrine control of exercise-induced GH release. Finally, information related to the effects of aging and gender on the GH response to exercise will be provided.

Gender governs the relationship between exercise intensity and growth hormone release in young adults

We previously reported that in young adult males growth hormone (GH) release is related to exercise intensity in a linear dose-response manner (Pritzlaff et al. J Appl Physiol 87: 498-504, 1999). To investigate the effects of gender and exercise intensity on GH release, eight women (24.3 +/- 1.3 yr, 171 +/- 3.2 cm height, 63.6 +/- 8.7 kg weight) were each tested on six randomly ordered occasions [1 control condition (C), 5 exercise conditions (Ex)]. Serum GH concentrations were measured in samples obtained at 10-min intervals between 0700 and 0900 (baseline) and 0900 and 1300 (Ex + recovery or C). Integrated GH concentrations (IGHC) were calculated by trapezoidal reconstruction. During Ex, subjects exercised for 30 min (0900-0930) at one of the following intensities [normalized to the lactate threshold (LT)]: 25 and 75% of the difference between LT and rest, at LT, and at 25 and 75% of the difference between LT and peak O2 uptake. No differences were observed among conditions for baseline IGHC. To determine whether total (Ex + recovery) IGHC changed with increasing exercise intensity, slopes associated with individual linear regression models were subjected to a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. To test for gender differences, data in women were compared with the previously published data in men. A Wilcoxon ranked-sums two-tailed test was used to analyze the slopes and intercepts from the regression models. Total IGHC increased linearly with increasing exercise intensity. The slope and intercept values for the relationship between total IGHC and exercise intensity were greater in women than in men. Deconvolution analysis (0700-1300 h) revealed that, regardless of gender, increasing exercise intensity resulted in a linear increase in the mass of GH secreted per pulse and summed GH production rate, with no changes in GH secretory pulse frequency or apparent half-life of elimination. Exercise reduced the half-duration of GH secretory burst in men but not in women. Gender comparisons revealed that women had greater basal (nonpulsatile) GH secretion across all conditions, more frequent GH secretory pulses, a greater GH secretory pulse amplitude, a greater production rate, and a trend for a greater mass of GH secreted per pulse than men. We conclude that, in young adults, the GH secretory response to exercise is related to exercise intensity in a linear dose-response pattern. For each incremental increase in exercise intensity, the fractional stimulation of GH secretion is greater in women than in men.

Effect of exercise intensity on 24-h energy expenditure and nutrient oxidation

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of exercise at different intensities on 24-h energy expenditure (EE) and substrate oxidation. Sixteen adults (8 men and 8 women) were studied on three occasions [sedentary day (Con), a low-intensity exercise day (LI; 400 kcal at 40% of maximal oxygen consumption) and a high-intensity exercise day (HI; 400 kcal at 70% of maximal oxygen consumption)] by using whole room indirect calorimetry. Both 24-h EE and carbohydrate oxidation were significantly elevated on the exercise days (Con < LI = HI), but 24-h fat oxidation was not different across conditions. Muscle enzymatic profile was not consistently related to 24-h fat or carbohydrate oxidation. With further analysis, it was found that, compared with men, women sustained slightly higher rates of 24-h fat oxidation (mg x kg FFM(-1) x min(-1)) and had a muscle enzymatic profile favoring fat oxidation. It is concluded that exercise intensity has no effect on 24-h EE or nutrient oxidation. Additionally, it appears that women may sustain slightly greater 24-h fat oxidation rates during waking and active periods of the day.
