Abstract
A 42-d study was conducted to investigate the effects of an emulsifier supplementation (de-oiled soyabean lecithin (DSL)) of diets with different levels of metabolisable energy (ME) and various sources of fat on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood profile and jejunal morphology of broiler chickens. Diets were arranged factorially (2 × 2 × 2) and consisted of two concentrations of ME (normal and low), two fat sources (soyabean oil (SO) and poultry fat (PF)) and two levels of DSL supplementation (0 and 1 g/kg). A total of 800 1-d-old male broiler chickens were assigned to eight treatments with five replicates/treatment. The results showed the supplemental DSL caused improvements in the overall feed conversion ratio, fat digestibility and jejunal villus height:crypt depth ratio, but the magnitude of the responses was greater in the PF-containing diets, resulting in significant fat × DSL interactions (P<0·05). Abdominal fat percentage was also reduced by the PF-containing diet, but the response was greater in the normal ME diet, resulting in a significant ME × fat interaction (P = 0·048). Dietary DSL supplementation also increased nitrogen-corrected apparent ME values but decreased blood TAG (P = 0·041) and LDL (P = 0·049) concentrations, regardless of the source of fat used or the ME values in the diet. In conclusion, the present study suggests that the improvements in growth performance, fat digestibility and intestinal morphology that can be achieved with DSL supplementation are highly dependent on the degree of saturation of lipid incorporated into broiler chicken diets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between dyslipidemia and xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) remains controversial, and no definite evidence has indicated atherosclerosis risk in patients with XP. OBJECTIVE The present study was a systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate the association of serum lipid profiles and risk of atherosclerotic diseases with XP. METHODS We systematically searched for the eligible comparative studies published before April 15, 2019, in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library. A random-effects model was used to calculate the standard mean difference with 95% confidence interval for each pooled estimate. RESULTS The qualitative analyses included 15 case-control studies with 854 patients with XP. Compared with the controls, the patients with XP had significantly higher serum levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins, significantly higher apolipoprotein B levels, and relatively lower apolipoprotein A1 levels, and the carotid intima-media thickness was significantly higher. CONCLUSION Patients with XP had significantly higher serum levels of atherogenic low-density lipoproteins and bore significantly higher risk of atherosclerosis than the controls. Careful monitoring and targeted intervention for prevention of cardiovascular diseases is essential for these patients.

Abstract
Unfavorable serum lipid levels are the most important risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD), cerebral infarction, and other cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. This study included 2323 Han Chinese in southern China. We collected medical reports, lifestyle details, and blood samples of individuals and used the polymerase chain reaction-ligase detection reaction method to genotype single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Two SNPs showed a strong evidence of association with total cholesterol (TC): rs1003723 and rs6413504 in the low-density lipoproteins receptor (LDLR). Two SNPs in LDLR showed a strong evidence of association with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), rs1003723 and rs6413504. Two SNPs showed a strong evidence of association with triglycerides (TG), namely, rs662145 in pro-protein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and rs11643718 in the solute carrier family 12 member 3 (SLC12A3). For the TC, LDL-C, and TG levels, these SNPs generated strong combined effects on these lipid levels. For each additional dangerous gene, TC increased by 0.085 mmol/L (p = 7.00 × 10-6), and LDL-C increased by 0.075 mmol/L (p = 9.00 × 10-6). The TG increased by 0.096 mmol/L (p = 2.90 × 10-5). Compared with those bearing no risk alleles, the risk of hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and dyslipidemia increased in those with two or more risk alleles and one risk gene. Polymorphisms of PCSK9, LDLR, and SLC12A3 were associated with the plasma lipid levels in people in southern China. These results provide a theoretical basis for gene screening and the prevention of dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Inflammatory diseases, as periodontal disease (PD), has been associated with disturbance of lipid and glycemic metabolisms, as demonstrated by the increasing of PD patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and/or dyslipidemia comorbidities. We aimed to investigate the expression of inflammation and lipid metabolism genes, and correlations among clinical and biochemical characteristics in normoglycemic or T2D patients with dyslipidemia and PD, in comparison with healthy individuals. Five groups of 30 individuals each (150 patients) were formed based upon T2D, dyslipidemic and periodontal status. Blood analyses of lipid and glycemic profiles were carried out, and the gene expression was assessed by RT-qPCR. The systemic expression of IL6, TNFA and LEP genes were significantly higher in T2D, dyslipidemia and PD patients, while the PECAM1 gene showed the opposite. Higher RETN levels were found in patients with T2D independently of their glycemic control status. There were positive correlations between: TNFA, LEP and RETN with worse periodontal parameters; IL6, TNFA, ADIPOR1, LEP and RETN with waist-to-hip ratio; glycemic parameters with RETN; total cholesterol and triglycerides with LEP expression. We conclude that pro-inflammatory cytokines were related with worse lipid, glycemic and periodontal parameters, reinforcing that a hyper-inflammatory status connects systemic and oral inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of bile acids (BAs) on the growth performance and lipid metabolism of broilers fed with different energy level diets. 480 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers (45.01 ± 0.26 g) were allotted to a 2 × 2 factorial design with 2 levels of energy (basal or high-energy level) and 2 levels of BAs (with or without BAs supplementation), resulting in 4 groups of 8 replicates; the experiment lasted 42 d. High-energy diets decreased the feed/gain ratio (F/G) from 1 to 21 d (P < 0.05), and increased the liver index and abdominal fat percentage at 42 d (P < 0.05). The serum total triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol at 42 d were increased by high-energy diets (P < 0.05), while the hepatic lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity at 21 and 42 d was decreased (P < 0.05). BAs supplementation increased the body weight at 21 d and decreased the F/G during entire period (P < 0.05), as well as improved the carcass quality reflected by decreased abdominal fat percentage at 42 d and increased breast muscle percentage at 21 and 42 d (P < 0.05). The serum TG at 21 and 42 d were decreased by BAs (P < 0.05), and the hepatic LPL activity at 42 d was increased (P < 0.05). In addition, high-energy diets increased the expression of sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and fatty acid synthase (P < 0.05), while BAs diets decreased these genes expression (P < 0.05). Moreover, BAs supplementation also increased the expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (P < 0.05), which was increased in high-energy groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, BAs supplementation could increase growth performance, elevate carcass quality, and improve lipid metabolism in broilers.

Abstract
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a multi-factorial disease characterized by the hyperproliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation resulted in alterations of the structure and function of pulmonary arterial walls, leading to right ventricular failure and death. Diabetes mellitus has not yet been implicated in pulmonary hypertension. However, recently, variable studies have shown that diabetes is correlated with pulmonary hypertension pathobiology, which could participate in the modification of pulmonary artery muscles. The metabolomic changes in PASMCs were studied in response to 25 mM of D-glucose (high glucose, or HG) in order to establish a diabetic-like condition in an in vitro setting, and compared to five mM of D-glucose (normal glucose, or LG). The effect of co-culturing these cells with an ideal blood serum concentration of cholecalciferol-D3 and tocopherol was also examined. The current study aimed to examine the role of hyperglycemia in pulmonary arterial hypertension by the quantification and detection of the metabolomic alteration of smooth muscle cells in high-glucose conditions. Untargeted metabolomics was carried out using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Cell proliferation was assessed by cell viability and the [³H] thymidine incorporation assay, and the redox state within the cells was examined by measuring reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The results demonstrated that PASMCs in high glucose (HG) grew, proliferated faster, and generated higher levels of superoxide anion (O₂·-) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). The metabolomics of cells cultured in HG showed that the carbohydrate pathway, especially that of the upper glycolytic pathway metabolites, was influenced by the activation of the oxidation pathway: the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). The amount of amino acids such as aspartate and glutathione reduced via HG, while glutathione disulfide, N6-Acetyl-L-lysine, glutamate, and 5-aminopentanoate increased. Lipids either as fatty acids or glycerophospholipids were downregulated in most of the metabolites, with the exception of docosatetraenoic acid and PG (16:0/16:1(9Z)). Purine and pyrimidine were influenced by hyperglycaemia following PPP oxidation. The results in addition showed that cells exposed to 25 mM of glucose were oxidatively stressed comparing to those cultured in five mM of glucose. Cholecalciferol (D3, or vitamin D) and tocopherol (vitamin E) were shown to restore the redox status of many metabolic pathways.

Abstract
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality among men and women around the world. The aim of this study was to investigate major cardiovascular risk factors in women living in the Tabriz petrochemical region, Iran during spring 2017. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a sample of 152 women aged 30-55 years was selected from who attended health center in Tabriz, Iran. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure,daily dietary intakes and fasting serum lipid profile, oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were evaluated. Results: The prevalence of overweight, general and abdominal obesity (based on Body mass index [BMI] and waist circumference [WC]) was 34.2%, 52.6%, and 73.7%, respectively. Eleven point two percent and 4.6% of women had pre-hypertension based on systolic blood pressure (SBP)and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). High serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)were determined in 32.5%, 25.7%, 17.8% and 56.6% of subjects, respectively. The median of serum ox-LDL concentration was 3181.5 ng/L. Sixty-five point eight percent of participants hadhigh hs-CRP levels. In the multiple-adjusted quintile regression analysis, significant relationships were found between serum ox-LDL and age (B = 96.7, P = 0.003) and between serum hs-CRP with diastolic blood pressure (B = 0.1, P = 0.083) and TG (B = 0.01, P = 0.088). Conclusion: The high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the studied women warrants more public health attention. The results also suggest that aging was associated with high serumox-LDL and increased serum hs-CRP levels, which may reflect enhanced DBP and serum TG.

Abstract
CONTEXT Dyslipidemia, including elevated serum total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG), and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a major modifiable risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This review summarizes many of the key findings on lipid measures in the Tehran lipid and glucose study (TLGS), a large scale community-based study with an approximately two decade follow-up. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science databases, and the library of the Research Institute for Endocrine Sciences, using the following keywords: Lipid measures, lipid ratios, lipid profile, dyslipidemia, and "Tehran lipid and glucose study". Articles were categorized based on fields of prevalence, trends, and impact of lipid profile on incident NCDs and mortality. RESULTS Between 1999 - 2001, the prevalence of high risk lipids ranged from 14% (low HDL-C) to 17% (high LDL-C) among adolescents, although among adults the lowest and highest prevalence were observed for low HDL-C (19%) and high TG (28%). Despite favorable trends for lipid parameters among adolescents, adults, and the elderly population, a considerable number of diabetic individuals, failed to achieve the optimum level of serum lipids. During follow-up, consumption of lipid-lowering drugs increased from 1.5 to 9.0% and 3.7 to 11.4% among adult men and women, respectively. The association between different lipid parameters and related ratios for incident type 2 diabetes (T2D), hypertension, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases differed between genders. Interestingly, each 1-unit increase in TC/HDL-C increased risk of hypertension among women (odds ratio (OR): 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.00 - 1.27) and T2D among men (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.06 - 1.51). Moreover, TC, LDL-C, non-HDL-C, Ln-TG, TC/HDL-C, and Ln-TG/HDL were inversely associated with non-cardiovascular mortality. CONCLUSIONS Despite high prevalence of high risk lipid profiles among the TLGS population at baseline, favorable trends were observed in levels of all lipid components, which might be attributable to increased consumption of lipid-lowering medications and improvement in the general knowledge of Iranians regarding limited consumption of hydrogenated oil. Considering the impact of lipid profiles on incident NCDs, more attention should be paid to at-risk groups for screening and treatment purposes.

Abstract
Purpose Hypertension (HT) is the major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases because of its poor control. To control HT at the primary care level in urban communities, there is a demand for deeper comprehension of the manifestations of poorly controlled HT. This study aimed to examine appearance of HT, including the association between the appearance and home blood pressure (HBP) control at the primary care level in urban communities. Patients and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in July-October 2017 in an urban community in Thailand. The total sample size from randomization was 125 poorly controlled HT patients who were diagnosed with an average clinic blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg in their last three visits. Data were collected by face-to-face interviews, HBP monitoring (HBPM), and blood and urine testing. Data analysis was conducted via descriptive statistics and the chi-square tests, with a significance level of p<0.05. Results HBPM revealed that 58.4% of patients with poorly controlled blood pressure from clinic measurement had a systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure that were below the HBP target. Most patients were overweight/obese, but they were nonsmokers and nondrinkers. As comorbidities, they had hyperlipidemia (64.0%) and diabetes mellitus (53.0%). One-quarter of them had good levels of knowledge and literacy. Nearly half had good health self-care literacy. Only 13% exhibited adequate self-management behaviors, but more than half had biochemistry results within normal limits. There were significant associations of smoking history and having hyperlipidemia as a comorbidity with HBP control (p =0.010 and 0.046, respectively). Conclusion The role of HBPM is important in practice when it comes to monitoring HT control at the primary care level in an urban context. Smoking cessation and control of the blood lipid levels should be highlighted not only at the practice, but also at the policy level.

Abstract
Lipids are essential for physiological processes such as maintaining membrane integrity, providing a source of energy and acting as signalling molecules to control processes including cell proliferation, metabolism, inflammation and apoptosis. Disruption of lipid homeostasis can promote pathological changes that contribute towards biological ageing and age-related diseases. Several age-related diseases have been associated with altered lipid metabolism and an elevation in highly damaging lipid peroxidation products; the latter has been ascribed, at least in part, to mitochondrial dysfunction and elevated ROS formation. In addition, senescent cells, which are known to contribute significantly to age-related pathologies, are also associated with impaired mitochondrial function and changes in lipid metabolism. Therapeutic targeting of dysfunctional mitochondrial and pathological lipid metabolism is an emerging strategy for alleviating their negative impact during ageing and the progression to age-related diseases. Such therapies could include the use of drugs that prevent mitochondrial uncoupling, inhibit inflammatory lipid synthesis, modulate lipid transport or storage, reduce mitochondrial oxidative stress and eliminate senescent cells from tissues. In this review, we provide an overview of lipid structure and function, with emphasis on mitochondrial lipids and their potential for therapeutic targeting during ageing and age-related disease.

Dyslipidemias, including isolated high LDL-c or mixed dyslipidemia, such as those seen in diabetes (hypertriglyceridemia, high LDL-c or low HDL-c), correlate with a significant risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease worldwide. This review analyzes the current knowledge concerning the genetic basis of lipid metabolism alterations, emphasizing lipoprotein lipase gene mutations and the HindIII polymorphism, which are associated with decreased levels of triglycerides and LDL-c, as well as higher levels of HDL-c. These patterns would be associated with decreased global morbidity and mortality, providing protection against cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Abstract
Objective To study the correlation between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) constitution and dyslipidemia. Methods CNKI, VIP, Wanfang database, CBMdisc, PubMed, and Embase were searched, and meta-analysis was performed by Review Manager 5.2 software. Results Altogether 11 studies were included with 12890 individuals. The results showed that balanced constitution was a protective factor of dyslipidemia (OR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.47~0.82) while phlegm-dampness constitution was a risk factor of it (OR = 2.50, 95% CI 2.22~2.80), and the effect of phlegm-dampness constitution in South China (OR = 3.31, 95% CI 1.71~6.43) was more obvious than that in East (OR = 2.40, 95% CI 2.06~2.80) and North China (OR = 2.24, 95% CI 1.81~2.78). Conclusion This study provides evidence for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia in TCM. However, most of the studies included are of moderate quality; more high quality, multicenter, large-sample studies are expected to provide higher level evidence.

Abstract
This review discusses the role of triglycerides (TGs) in the normal cardiovascular system as well as in the development and clinical manifestation of cardiovascular diseases. Regulation of TGs at the enzymatic and genetic level, in addition to their possible relevance as preclinical and clinical biomarkers, is discussed, culminating with a description of available and emerging treatments. Due to the high complexity of the subject and the vast amount of material in the literature, the objective of this review was not to exhaust the subject, but rather to compile the information to facilitate and improve the understanding of those interested in this topic. The main publications on the topic were sought out, especially those from the last 5 years. The data in the literature still give reason to believe that there is room for doubt regarding the use of TG as disease biomarkers; however, there is increasing evidence for the role of hypertriglyceridemia on the atherosclerotic inflammatory process, cardiovascular outcomes, and mortality.
