Abstract
CONTEXT Crataegus aronia (syn. Azarolus L.) (Rosaceae) is used in traditional medicine due to its hypolipidaemic and antioxidant properties. OBJECTIVES This study investigates the effect of C. aronia whole plant aqueous extract on sperm parameter and testicular structure in control and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-induced rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Male rats were divided into six groups (10 rats each) as control fed a standard diet (STD) (10% kcal), STD + C. aronia (200 mg/kg), high-fat diet (HFD) (45% kcal), HFD + C. aronia, HFD followed by C. aronia, and C. aronia followed by HFD. Rats were treated with C. aronia (once/day, orally) for four weeks. RESULTS Compared with STD rats, STD rats co-treated with C. aronia had lower hepatic triglycerides (0.58 vs. 0.42 mg/g) and cholesterol (5.4 vs. 3.27 mg/g) contents, higher levels of testosterone (8.43 vs. 10.9 ng/mL), luteinizing hormone (6.05 vs. 8.1 mIU/mL) and follicle-stimulating hormone (5.8 vs. 8.0 mIU/mL) and increased epididymis weight (1.28 vs. 1.5g) and sperm count (133.2 vs. 148.3 million/0.1 mg) and motility (66.8%vs. 77.6%). They showed increased testicular levels of glutathione (6.3 vs. 7.75 µM/L) and higher protein levels of Nrf2 (0.37 vs. 0.79), γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (0.27 vs. 0.5) and superoxide dismutase (0.92 vs. 2.1). Concomitant or post-treatment of C. aronia to NAFLD rats prevented the declines in sperm parameters and damage in the testis by similar effects like those found in the STD rats. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS This study encourages the use of C. aronia in further future clinical studies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to test the effects of five different concentrations (0, 10−3, 10−4, 10−5, and 10−6 M) of resveratrol (Res) supplementation in bull sperm washing and fertilisation medium on levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), phosphatidylserine (PS) externalisation, mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), ATP and malondialdehyde (MDA), acrosomal integrity, blastocyst rate, and blastocyst quality after in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The results for sex-sorted sperm from three bulls showed: (1) ROS and MDA levels in 10−3 M and 10−4 M Res groups were significantly lower than those of controls (P < 0.05); (2) the percentage of viable sperm, percentage of sperm with high Δψm, and the ATP content in 10−3 M and 10−4 M Res groups were significantly higher than those of controls (P < 0.05); (3) the percentage of viable sperm with acrosomal integrity, and the blastocyst percentage and quality of the 10−4 M Res group were significantly higher than those of controls (P < 0.05). In conclusion, 10−4 M Res supplementation in washing and fertilisation medium of sex-sorted bull sperm significantly decreased ROS, PS externalisation, and MDA, and protected mitochondrial function and acrosomal integrity, thereby increasing blastocyst percentage and quality following IVF.

Abstract
Hepatoblastoma is the most common primary liver tumor for children aged <5 years old. 20(S)-Protopanaxadiol (PPD) is a ginsenoside extracted from Pananx quinquefolium L., which inhibits tumor growth in several cancer cell lines. The purpose of the present study was to assess the anticancer activities of 20(S)-PPD in human hepatoblastoma HepG2 cells. The cytotoxicity of 20(S)-PPD on HepG2 cells was evaluated using an MTT assay. Apoptosis was detected using DAPI staining and flow cytometry. The expression of apoptosis-associated proteins was identified by western blotting. The results demonstrated that 20(S)-PPD inhibited the viability of HepG2 cell in a dose and time-dependent manner. The IC50 values were 81.35, 73.5, 48.79 µM at 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. Topical morphological changes of apoptotic body formation following 20(S)-PPD treatment were detected by DAPI staining. The percentage of Annexin V-fluoroscein isothyiocyanate positive cells were 3.73, 17.61, 23.44 and 65.43% in HepG2 cells treated with 0, 40, 50 and 60 µM of 20(S)-PPD, respectively. Furthermore, 20(S)-PPD upregulated the expression of Bax and downregulated the expression of Bcl-2 and also activated caspases-3 and −9, and Poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase cleavage. In addition, 20(S)-PPD inhibited the phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt; Ser473). The results indicate that 20(S)-PPD inhibits the viability of HepG2 cells and induces apoptosis in HepG2 cells by inhibiting the phosphoinositide-3-kinase/Akt pathway.

Abstract
This study investigated the long-term effects of electric fields (EF) which might cause physiopathological or morphological changes in the testis tissues of rats. We assumed that using resveratrol (RES) might reduce harmful effects of the EF. Thirty-two male Wistar Albino rats were randomly divided into four groups with eight animals in each; control, EF, EF + RES and RES. Malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and histopathological parameters were evaluated in testis tissue. Epididymal sperm count, motility and DNA damage were studied. Total testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, estradiol and growth hormone levels were evaluated in the plasma samples. EF caused statistically significant increase in MDA levels, body weight and DNA damage. A significant decrease was detected in sperm count and motility. The histopathological examination of the testes showed the germ cell decrease in the seminiferous epithelium with oedema and vascular congestion in the interstitial tissue. In immunohistochemical examination, the increase in the apoptotic cells number was detected. RES partially ameliorated biochemical, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings in the EF + RES group. These findings clearly demonstrated that EF can cause damage in rat testis. RES can ameliorate the damage caused by EF.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES) has the ability to ameliorate nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the mechanism remains unclear. Hence, using high-fat diet (HFD) obese rat model, we investigated the effect of a low dose of RES (20 mg/kg) on the hepatic sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBPs) – lipogenesis pathway, enzymes involved in β-oxidation and activity of pancreatic lipase. Four groups of rats (n = 8) of control (12% of calories as fat) and HFD (40% of calories as fat) were administered orally with either normal saline as a vehicle or RES as a concomitant treatment for 8 weeks on a daily basis. Then, various biochemical, histological, and molecular experiments were carried out. RES prevented the development and progression of NAFLD and significantly improved insulin sensitivity through (1) inhibiting the proteolytic cleavage of SREBPs-1 and SREBPs-2 without affecting their precursor mRNA or protein levels, (2) inhibiting free fatty acid β-oxidation and generation of reactive oxygen species through significant inhibition of CPT-1 and UCP-2, and (3) decreasing activity of pancreatic lipase in vivo and in vitro. In conclusion, our findings are the first in the literature to show new mechanisms of the hepatoprotective effect of RES against HFD induced NAFLD in rats.

Abstract
Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a glycoprotein that regulates the function of ovarian follicular cells. Theca cells (TCs) also have a key role in follicular growth and atresia. The effects and intracellular signaling mechanisms were investigated of LH on apoptosis and steroidogenesis in goat gonadotropin-independent follicular (1.0-4.0 mm) TCs. The results indicated that LH increased androstenedione secretion and relative abundance of CYP17A1 and BCL2 mRNA in the TCs, whereas LH in combination with LY294002, a PI3K/AKT inhibitor, decreased LH-induced function. The apoptosis ratio and expression of the BAX gene in TCs were less with LH treatment, and the extent of this inhibition was decreased by suppressing the PI3K/AKT pathway. In conclusion, results of the present study indicate LH regulates apoptosis and steroidogenesis in goat TCs by activating the PI3K/AKT pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Cadmium is a potent toxicant and carcinogenic substance for human and experimental animals. The evidences indicate that cadmium induces aberrant gene expression, inhibition of DNA damage repair, and apoptosis. In this study, we investigated the effects of IP (intraperitoneal) injection of cadmium on mRNA levels expression of Bcl-2 and Bax genes in rat small intestine. METHODS 28 male Wistar rats weighing 200 to 250 grams were randomly assigned into 4 groups. Group 1 received saline while the animals in groups 2-4 were injected cadmium (1, 2 and 4 mg/kg) for 15 successive days. One day after the last injection, the small intestine was dissected and the mRNA levels expression of Bax and Bcl-2 genes was evaluated using Real Time PCR technique. RESULTS Cadmium increased the mRNA levels of Bax gene compared to the control group at 2 and 4 mg/kg (P < 0.01) in small intestine of rats. The mRNA levels of Bcl-2 gene decreased significantly compared to the control group at 1, 2 and 4 mg/kg (P < 0.001) in small intestine of rats. CONCLUSION These results showed Cadmium exposure induced cell apoptosis by increasing Bax/Bcl-2 ratio expression.

Resveratrol supplementation rescues pool of growing follicles and ovarian stroma from Cisplatin-induced toxicity on the ovary in Sprague-Dawley rats: An experimental study. Abstract
BACKGROUND Cisplatin is a potent antineoplastic agent for many cancers but causes several levels of gonadal damage. Ovarian toxicity is a major concern of young cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. OBJECTIVE This study sought to examine the effect of Cisplatin and Resveratrol supplementation on ovarian function in Sprague-Dawley rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this experimental study, 45 cyclic Sprague-Dawley rats with an average weight of 160 gr were divided into 9 groups (n=5/group). Group 1 was used as control and received distilled water. Groups 2 and 9 received Cisplatin only. Groups 3, 4, and 5 received different doses of Resveratrol after a single dose of Cisplatin. Groups 6, 7, and 8 received Resveratrol before Cisplatin. At sacrifice, the ovary was analyzed for histopathology, biochemical indices of oxidation and hormonal assay. RESULTS Relative and absolute organ weights were notably increased (p=0.001, 0.01) in the prophylactic groups relative to the groups that received Resveratrol after Cisplatin. Also, glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase were significantly increased (p=0.047, 0.01, 0.023) in a dose-dependent manner when compared to Cisplatin group only. Malondialdehyde decreased significantly (p=0.001) in the groups that received high dose Resveratrol compared with the control and Cisplatin alone groups. Although oestrogen showed no significant difference within the groups (p=0.48), Resveratrol significantly increased progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels (p=0.007, 0.001, 0.006) at high doses when compared with Cisplatin alone groups. Ovarian histoarchitecture was best preserved in the prophylactic groups in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION Resveratrol supplementation confers protection and preserves ovarian follicles from Cisplatin toxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Abstract
Cadmium is an environmental pollutant known as endocrine disruptor. Testis is particularly susceptible to cadmium, and testis injury occurs at high but even low levels of exposure. Cadmium reproductive toxicity is mediated by multiple mechanisms, including structural damage to testis vasculature and blood-testis barrier, inflammation, cytotoxicity on Sertoli and Leydig cells, oxidative stress mainly by means of mimicry and interference with essential ions, apoptosis, interference with selected signaling pathways and epigenetic regulation of genes involved in the regulation of reproductive function, and disturbance of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. The current review outlines epidemiological observational findings from environmental and occupational exposure in humans, and reports experimental studies in humans and animals. Lastly, a focus on the pathogenetic mechanisms of cadmium toxicity and on the specific mechanisms of cadmium sensitivity and resistance, particularly assessed in animal models, is included. Despite convincing experimental findings in animals and supporting evidences in humans identifying cadmium as reproductive toxicant, observational findings are controversial, suffering from heterogeneity of study design and pattern of exposure, and from co-exposure to multiple pollutants.

Cadmium chloride-induced testicular toxicity in male wistar rats; prophylactic effect of quercetin, and assessment of testicular recovery following cadmium chloride withdrawal. Abstract
This study assessed the effect of quercetin (QE) on cadmium chloride (CdCl2) - induced testicular toxicity, as well as the effect of withdrawal of CdCl2 treatment on same. Thirty male Wistar rats aged 10 weeks old and weighing 270-300g were assigned into 5 groups and used for this study. Rats in groups 1-4 were administered vehicle, CdCl2 (5mg/kg bwt), CdCl2+QE (5mg/kg bwt and 20mg/kg bwt, respectively) or QE (20mg/kg bwt) orally for 4 weeks. Group 5 rats received CdCl2, with 4 weeks recovery period. Results showed that cadmium accumulated in serum, testis and epididymis, decreased body weight, testicular and epididymal weights, sperm count, motility and viability. Cadmium decreased serum concentrations of reproductive hormones, but increased testicular glucose, lactate and lactate dehydrogenase activity. Cadmium decreased testicular enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase) and non-enzymatic (glutathione, vitamins C and E) antioxidants, and increased malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide. Cadmium down-regulated Bcl-2 protein, up-regulated Bax protein, increased Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and cleaved caspase-3 activity. Histopathology of the testis showed decreased Johnsen's score and Leydig cell count. These negative effects were attenuated by QE administration, while withdrawal of CdCl2 did not appreciably reverse toxicity. We conclude that QE better protected the testis from CdCl2 toxicity than withdrawal of CdCl2 administration.

Abstract
Nicotine decreased the antioxidant capacities in male rats. The lung of nicotine-treated rats showed severe congestion of the alveolar lung tissues. Resveratrol exerts its protective effect by alleviating the extent of oxidative status induced by nicotine. Resveratrol improve the enzymatic/non-enzymatic antioxidant defense system in rats treated with combination of nicotine and resveratrol. Resveratrol decreases the pathological changes in animals against the lung damage caused by nicotine.
Male albino rats of Wistar strain were injected intraperitoneally with nicotine or/and resveratrol for 4 weeks. Serum Interleukin-2, Interleukin-6, alpha-fetoprotein and tumor necrosis-alpha, as well as plasma 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine of nicotine-treated rats were increased significantly. Myeloperoxidase, xanthine oxidase, nitric oxide, lipid peroxidation and total oxidative status of the lung in nicotine-treated rats were increased significantly, which were brought down to normal in resveratrol co-treated group. Endogenous antioxidant status as the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenases were found to be decreased significantly in the lung of the nicotine-treated group, which were significantly raised in resveratrol-administered groups. The non-enzymatic antioxidants as total antioxidant and thiol levels were decreased significantly as the effect of nicotine that was effectively enhanced by resveratrol treatment. The lung of nicotine-treated rats showed severe congestion of the alveolar lung tissues with scattered congestion per bronchiolar and perivascular cells, as well as, inflammatory cells were observed. The data suggested that resveratrol exerts its protective effect by modulating the extent of oxidative status and improving the enzymatic/non-enzymatic antioxidant defense system, moreover, decreases the pathological changes in animals against the lung damage caused by nicotine.

Abstract
Cadmium chloride (CdCl2 ) has been reported to cause reproductive toxicity in male rats, mainly through oxidative stress. This study examined its effect on sexual behaviour, as one of the mechanisms of reproductive dysfunction, as well as the possible ameliorative effect of quercetin (QE) on same. Thirty male Wistar rats (10 weeks old), weighing 270-300 g, were used for this study. They were either orally administered 2% DMSO, CdCl2 (5 mg/kg b.w.), QE (20 mg/kg b.w.) or CdCl2 +QE, once daily for 4 weeks, before sexual behavioural studies. The 5th group received CdCl2 for 4 weeks and allowed 4-week recovery period, before sexual behavioural test. Rats were sacrificed after sexual behavioural studies. The blood, testis and penis were collected for biochemical assays. Cadmium increased mount, intromission and ejaculatory latencies, but reduced their frequencies, compared to control. Serum nitric oxide increased, while penile cyclic guanosine monophosphate reduced in the CdCl2 -exposed rats, compared to control. CdCl2 increased testicular cholesterol, but reduced 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) and 17β-HSD activities, and testosterone concentration. QE better attenuated these negative changes compared to withdrawal of CdCl2 treatment. In conclusion, CdCl2 suppressed steroidogenesis, penile erection and sexual behaviour, with poor reversal following withdrawal, while QE attenuated these effects.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of cadmium-induced apoptosis in chicken spleens and the antagonistic effects of selenium. We duplicated the selenium-cadmium interaction model and examined the expression of apoptosis-, immune-, mitochondrial dynamics- and energy metabolism-related genes. The results demonstrated that after treatment with cadmium, the frequency of apoptosis was significantly increased, and the morphological characteristics of apoptosis were observed. The expression of pro-apoptotic genes was increased, and that of anti-apoptotic genes was decreased. The mRNA levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and interlenkin-1β were observably increased, but the interlenkin-2 and interferon-γ levels were markedly decreased. Furthermore, the mRNA and protein levels of dynamin-related protein 1 and mitochondrial fission factor were significantly enhanced, whereas mitofusin 1, mitofusin 2, and optic atrophy 1 were markedly decreased. The expression of hexokinase 1, hexokinase 2, aconitase 2, lactate dehydrogenase A, lactate dehydrogenase B, succinatedehydrogenase B, pyruvate kinase and phosphofructokinase were also reduced. Selenium supplements remarkably attenuated cadmium-induced effects (p < 0.05). Based on the above results, conclude that the cadmium treatment promoted a mitochondrial dynamic imbalance and reduced energy metabolism, leading to apoptosis and immune dysfunction in chicken spleens, and selenium had an antagonistic effect on Cd-induced apoptosis.

Abstract
To investigate the underlying mechanism of neurotoxicity of cadmium, we examined the effects of intraperitoneal injection of cadmium on messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) and Bax (Bcl2-associated x) genes and caspase-3/7 activation in rat hippocampus and frontal cortex. Twenty-eight male Wistar rats weighing 200–250 g were randomly divided into four groups. Control group received saline and three other groups received cadmium at doses of 1, 2 and 4 mg/kg (body weight) for 15 successive days. One day after the last injection, the hippocampus and frontal cortex were dissected and removed and then the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax genes was evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction and apoptotic studies was done using caspase-3/7 activation assay. Cadmium reduced the mRNA level of Bcl-2 in the control group at doses of 1 ( p < 0.01), 2 and 4 mg/kg ( p < 0.001) in rat hippocampus and cortex cells. The mRNA level of Bax increased significantly compared to the control group at the doses of 1 ( p < 0.05), 2 and 4 mg/kg ( p < 0.001) in rat hippocampus. The mRNA level of Bax was increased significantly compared to the control group at the doses of 2 and 4 mg/kg ( p < 0.001) in rat cortex cells. Cadmium increased caspase-3/7 activity at doses of 1, 2 and 4 mg/kg in rat hippocampus. Caspase-3/7 activity was increased significantly at dose of 4 mg/kg in rat cortex. This decreased Bcl-2/Bax mRNA ratio induces cell apoptosis. Apoptotic effect of cadmium may be through the mitochondrial pathway by the activation of caspase-3/7.

Abstract
Context:
Kidney is one of the vital organs maintaining homeostasis of body and thus
dysfunction of kidney affects quality of life and health severely. Anticancer drugs,
particularly chemotherapeutic agents, cause high toxicity leading kidney dysfunction
and irreparable kidney injury. Therefore, attention has recently been paid to seeking out
alternatives such as nature-based drugs that are effective but less toxic. In this regard, this
systematic review article is to report and introduce the most important medicinal plants
and their derivatives that are used to reduce anticancer drug-induced nephrotoxicity.
Evidence Acquisitions: The word nephrotoxicity alongside the words cancer or chemotherapy
in combination with some herbal terms such as medicinal plant, plants, herbs, and extracts
were administered to search for relevant publications indexed in PubMed.
Results:
According to this study, 16 medicinal plants, 12 plant-based derivatives, and three
traditional plant-based formulations were found to help control and modulate anticancer
drug-induced nephrotoxicity indices.
Conclusions:
Anticancer drugs cause nephrotoxicity through activating pathways of oxidative
stress, damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) production, inflammatory
processes, and cell apoptosis, while medicinal plants and their derivatives can cause
reduction in nephrotoxicity and anticancer drugs side effects via their antioxidant and
anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract
Male infertility is a complex, multifactorial and polygenic disease that contributes to ~50% cases of infertility. Previous studies have demonstrated that excess weight and obesity factors serve an important role in the development of male infertility. An increasing number of studies have reported that resveratrol may regulate the response of cells to specific stimuli that induce cell injury, as well as decrease germ cell apoptosis in mice or rats. In the present study, the semen quality and serum sex hormone levels were evaluated in 324 men, which included 73 underweight, 82 normal weight, 95 overweight and 74 obese men. All patients were referred to The Reproductive Medicine Center of Shanxi Women and Infants Hospital (Taiyuan, China) between January 2013 and January 2015. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of resveratrol treatment on the motility, plasma zinc concentration and acrosin activity of sperm from obese males. The sperm concentration, normal sperm morphology, semen volumes, DNA fragmentation rates and testosterone levels in men from the overweight and obese groups were markedly decreased when compared with men in the normal weight group. In addition, the progressive motility, seminal plasma zinc concentration and spermatozoa acrosin activity were notably decreased in the obese group compared with the normal weight group. However, estradiol levels were significantly increased in the overweight, obese and underweight groups compared with the normal weight group. Notably, semen samples from obese males with astenospermia treated with 0–100 µmol/l resveratrol for 30 min demonstrated varying degrees of improvement in sperm motility. When these semen samples were treated with 30 µmol/l resveratrol, sperm motility improved when compared to other doses of resveratrol. Therefore, 30 µmol/l resveratrol was selected for further experiments. Upon treatment of semen samples with resveratrol (30 µmol/l) for 30 min, the seminal plasma zinc concentration and spermatozoa acrosin activity increased significantly in the experimental group compared with the control group. These data suggest that male obesity negatively impacts on male reproductive potential, not only through altering hormone levels, but also by directly altering sperm function. In addition, resveratrol may have a therapeutic and protective effect against obesity-induced abnormalities in semen.

Abstract
The protective role of Arctium lappa (AL) on the testes of rats acutely exposed to cadmium (Cd) was tested. The rats were randomly divided into a control group (C-group) and three major experimental groups, which were further subdivided into minor groups (n = 6) according to the experimental period (7 or 56 days). The C-group was subdivided into C-7 and C-56 [receiving a single saline solution, intraperitoneal (i.p.), on the first day]; the AL-group, AL-7, and AL-56, received AL extract (300 mg/kg/daily); the Cd group, Cd-7 and Cd-56, received a single i.p. dose of CdCl2 (1.2 mg/kg body weight (BW)) on the first day; the CdAL group, CdAL-7 and CdAL-56, received the same Cd dose, followed by AL extract. Water or AL extract was administered daily by gavage. After either 7 or 56 days, the testis and accessory glands were removed after whole-body perfusion. Exposure to Cd and CdAL decreased the weight of the testis and epididymis, the gonadosomatic index, seminiferous tubular (ST) diameter, and ST volumetric proportion, and increased the volumetric proportion of interstitium after 56 days. In the epididymis caput, the tubular volumetric proportion decreased along with an increase of interstitial volumetric proportion and epithelium height after 56 days. The alterations observed were less severe only after 7 days. A progressive testicular damage resulted mainly in tubules lined only by Sertoli cells. The sperm number and cell debris decreased in the epididymis. We demonstrated that the testicular damage induced by single acute i.p. exposure to Cd occurred despite the daily oral intake of AL extract.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of molybdenum (Mo) combined with cadmium (Cd) on the antioxidant function and the mRNA expression levels of apoptosis-related genes in duck ovaries, 60 healthy 11-old-day female ducks were treated with hexaammonium molybdate ([(NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O]) or/and cadmium sulfate (3CdSO4·8H2O) at different doses on a daily basis for 120 days. On the 120th day, ten female birds in each group were euthanized, and the ovaries and blood were collected to determine the antioxidant indexes and the mRNA expression levels of Bak-1, Bcl-2, and caspase-3 in ovaries. In addition, ovary tissues were subjected to histopathological analysis with optical microscope. The total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased significantly (P < 0.01) in treated groups comparing with control while the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity increased (P < 0.01) both in ovary tissue and serum. The Bak-1 and caspase-3 expressions were upregulated while the Bcl-2 was downgraded by Mo or/and Cd. Biomolecules were affected in all metal-treated groups, whereas combined-treated animals showed greater effects. What is more, pathological damage in Mo and Cd combination treated groups was more severe. The results from the present study indicated that Mo or/and Cd caused oxidative stress and apoptosis in duck ovaries. Combination of Mo and Cd showed additive or synergistic effect leading to apoptosis and oxidative stress, and the pathway might be the mitochondrial pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the potential protective effect of resveratrol (RES) on aluminum chloride (AlCl3)-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. METHODS This experimental study was conducted from April to June 2015 at the Medical College of King Khalid University, Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The experiments were performed on 24 male Wistar rats. The rats were randomly allocated into 4 groups; 1) group A: control rats received only normal saline, 2) group B: received RES dissolved in normal saline, 3) group C: model group and received AlCl3 dissolved in normal saline and 4) group D: RES treated group and received concomitant doses of RES+AlCl3. All treatments were administered for consecutive 40 days. After 40 days of treatments, kidney function tests, oxidative stress parameters and histopathological assay were evaluated. RESULTS all findings clearly showed significant deteriorations in kidney function and architectures after AlCl3 exposure. This was accompanied by increased renal oxidative stress and inflammation suggesting strong pro-oxidant activity of AlCl3 in spite of its non-redox status. Resveratrol co-treatment with AlCl3 to the rats showed significant improvement in all biochemical and histological parameters related to kidney function and structure. CONCLUSION The findings of the current study showed that RES pre-administration to rats ameliorates renal damage and improves renal function in AlCl3 intoxicated rats in a mechanism related to its antioxidant potential.

Abstract
Diabetes adversely affects reproductive functions in humans and animals. The present study investigated the effects of Resveratrol on diabetes-induced alterations in oxidative stress, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling and apoptosis in the testis. Adult male Wistar rats (13-15 weeks; n=6/group) were segregated into 1) normal control, 2) Resveratrol-treated (5mg/kg; ip; given during last 3 weeks), 3) Streptozotocin-induced diabetic and, 4) Resveratrol-treated diabetic groups, and euthanized on day 42 after the confirmation of diabetes. Resveratrol did not normalize blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. Resveratrol supplementation recovered diabetes-induced decreases in reproductive organ weights, sperm count and motility, intra-testicular levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase and an increase in 4-hydroxynonenal activities (P<0.05). Resveratrol also recovered diabetes-induced increases in JNK signaling pathway proteins, namely, ASK1 (apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1), JNKs (46 and 54 kDa isoforms) and p-JNK to normal control levels (P<0.05). Interestingly, the expression of a down-stream target of ASK1, MKK4 (mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 4) and its phosphorylated form (p-MKK4) did not change in experimental groups. Resveratrol inhibited diabetes-induced increases in AP-1 (activator protein-1) components, c-Jun and ATF2 (activating transcription factor 2), but not their phosphorylated forms, to normal control levels (P<0.05). Further, Resveratrol inhibited diabetes-induced increase in cleaved-caspase-3 to normal control levels. In conclusion, Resveratrol alleviates diabetes-induced apoptosis in testis by modulating oxidative stress, JNK signaling pathway and caspase-3 activities, but not by inhibiting hyperglycemia, in rats. These results suggest that Resveratrol supplementation may be a useful strategy to treat diabetes-induced testicular dysfunction.

Abstract
AIM Myocardial infarction (MI) due to sudden occlusion of a major coronary artery leads to a complex series of events that result in left ventricle (LV) impairment eventual heart failure. Therapeutic options are limited to reverse such trends post MI. The aim of this study was to compare the acute cardioprotective effects of the antioxidants, resveratrol (RES) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), either individually or in combination, on infracts size, LV hemodynamics, inflammation and oxidative stress markers in rats with experimentally induced MI. METHODS Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups: control without surgery, sham without occlusion, MI without antioxidants, RES pre-treated then MI (20 mg/kg, orally), CoQ10 then MI (20 mg/kg, intramuscular.), and combined RES and CoQ10 then MI with (each group n = 10). Pretreatment commenced 7 days prior to the permanent occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery. Infarct area, hemodynamics, inflammation and oxidative stress markers were assessed 24 hours post-MI. RESULTS Compared to RES alone, CoQ10 pre-administration either by itself or in combination with RES, significantly reduced LV infarct area (57%), and normalized LV hemodynamic parameters like LVEDP (100%), LVSP (95.4%), LV +dp/dt and -dp/dt (102 and 73.1%, respectively). CoQ10 also decreased serum levels of brain natriuretic peptide (70%), and various circulating inflammatory markers like TNF-α (83.2%) and IL-6 (83.2%). Regarding oxidative stress, TBARS scores were lowered with a concurrent increase in both superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities with CoQ10 alone or in combination with RES. CONCLUSION Coenzyme Q10 protects against the acute sequelae of myocardial infarction. It profoundly reduced infarct area, inflammation and oxidative stress while normalizing LV hemodynamics post MI.
