Mapping publication trends and identifying hot spots of research on Internet health information seeking behavior: a quantitative and co-word biclustering analysis

Evaluation of the quality and readability of online information about breast cancer in China

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed at evaluating the quality and readability of online information about breast cancer written in Chinese.

METHODS

An Internet search was conducted for "breast cancer" in Chinese using the Baidu search engine. Website quality was evaluated using the DISCERN instrument, and readability was evaluated using the Chinese Readability Index Explorer (CRIE). Higher DISCERN score indicated higher quality of websites, while higher CRIE score indicated lower readability of the content of the websites. We also investigated the effects of website producer category, and the associations of search engine ranking with DISCERN and CRIE scores.

RESULTS

A total of 49 websites were included. The mean overall DISCERN score was 50.27 ± 4.14, and the mean CRIE score was 6.78 ± 0.16. Websites produced by non-profit organizations had the highest overall DISCERN scores, while those produced by private individuals had the lowest CRIE scores. Search engine ranking had no significant correlation with website quality or readability.

CONCLUSIONS

The quality and readability of breast cancer websites in Chinese were not satisfactory, and they varied among different website producer categories.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Website producers should seek to provide more accurate, comprehensive, and easy-to-understand information to better meet the needs of breast cancer patients. In addition, search engines should revise algorithms to promote websites with higher quality and accessibility.

Evolution and diffusion of information literacy topics

Investigation of the topic of information literacy and its changes can be informative for researchers and provide a better understanding of the corresponding domains. This study conducted a topic model dynamic analysis of the articles on information literacy studies in the Web of Science core collection database that were published from 2005 to 2019. The global topics and their popularities, topical similarities and correlations, along with the evolution of temporal local topics and the diffusion of subject local topics were analyzed and presented. Nine global topics differed in terms of their temporal and subject characteristics, and this study focused on ability, technology, field, people, place and application of information literacy. For the temporal local topics, crossing was the main evolutionary mechanism; hence, the core topic words were relatively stable, but few new research directions have been explored in recent years. For the subject local topics, absorbing with division and absorbing were the main mechanisms, which supported the diffusion progress of information literacy studies among subjects. However, it is necessary to promote the development of future research through the innovative development of multidisciplinary integration. Researchers and practitioners should focus on the impact of information technology, increase the breadth and depth of the research field, and develop innovative evaluation methods that are based on data to promote the comprehensive, sustainable and effective improvement in information literacy.

Hot spots and trends in knee revision research since the 21st century: a bibliometric analysis

Background

With the popularization of knee replacement surgery in the treatment of the advanced lesions of knee joint, the amount of knee revision surgery is increasing unceasingly. Meanwhile, the continuous introduction of new clinical concepts and new technology poses a challenge to researchers and surgeons. Our study aims to inform the future scientific research and clinical treatment, by investigating the hot spots and trends of the knee revision research field with the method of bibliometric analysis.

Methods

Publications on knee revision included in the database of Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) between 2000 and 2018 were reviewed and MeSH terms of them were extracted from PubMed. Online bibliometric analysis website (http://bibliometric.com/), two pieces of software called “CiteSpace” and “Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder” (BICOMB) were used to analyze the publications reviewed at quantitative level. Another piece of software called “gCLUTO”, was used to investigate the hot spots with visualization techniques at qualitative level.

Results

A total of 906 publications were retrieved between 2000 and 2018. There is an increasing number of publications, from 15 in 2000 to 86 in 2018. Journal of Arthroplasty is the leading journal which has the most publications on knee revision. The United States has been the biggest contributor. Mayo Clinic became the leader among the institutions which have conducted correlational researches. David G. Lewallen, Robert L. Barrack and Michael A. Mont should be regarded as the scholars who have made outstanding contribution. Hot spots were summed up in six clusters, respectively, the solutions for infection, prostheses, the adverse effects, the surgical techniques, epidemiological characters, and the pathophysiology of the revision knee.

Conclusions

We found a growing trend in knee revision research and extracted the most contributive researchers, institutions, countries, journals, and most-cited articles worldwide. The solutions for complications, surgical applications and analysis for epidemiological characters have been the hot spots. Multi-disciplinary integration is becoming the time-trend of hot spots. Minimally invasive and navigation are directions of revision surgery. They together constitute a solid foundation and set up a fingerpost for the future scientific research and clinical treatment.

Bibliometric analysis of research hotspots and development trends in selective fetal reduction

AIM

To evaluate the theme trends and knowledge structure of multifetal pregnancy reduction (MPR)-related literature by using bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

Published scientific papers regarding MPR were retrieved from the PubMed database. Data extraction and statistics were conducted using Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB). Furthermore, gCLUTO software was used in the study for bi-clustering analysis and strategic diagram analysis.

RESULTS

According to the search strategy, 906 total papers were included. Among all the extracted MeSH terms, 41 high frequency ones were identified and hotspots were clustered into four categories. In the strategic diagram, research on intrauterine treatment of MPR was most well developed. In contrast, statistical data on the sequelae of fetal reduction surgery and applications of MPR in assisted reproductive technologies were relatively immature.

CONCLUSION

The analysis of common terms among the high-frequency network terms in multiparous pregnancy reduction can help researchers and clinicians understand the hotspots, key topics, and issues to be discovered on MPR. Research on intrauterine treatment of MPR was most well developed.

A 10-year bibliometric analysis of osteosarcoma and cure from 2010 to 2019

BACKGROUND

In recent decades, the 5-year survival rate of osteosarcoma remains poor, despite the variety of operations, and exploration of drug therapy has become the key to improvement. This study investigates the contribution of different aspects in osteosarcoma and cure, and predicts research hotspots to benefit future clinical outcomes.

METHODS

The Web of Science and PubMed databases were queried to collect all relevant publications related to osteosarcoma and cure from 2009 to 2019. These data were imported into CiteSpace and the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology for bibliometric analysis. Bi-clustering was performed on Bibliographic Item co-occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB) and gCLUTO to identify hotspots. Additionally, completed clinical trials on osteosarcoma with results past phase II were collated.

RESULTS

A total of 2258 publications were identified in osteosarcoma and cure from 2009 to 2019. China has the largest number of publications (38.49%), followed by the United States (23.03%) with the greatest impact (centrality = 0.44). The centrality of most institutions is < 0.1, and Central South University and Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center possess the highest average citation rates of 3.25 and 2.87. BMC cancer has the highest average citation rate of 3.26 in 772 journals. Four authors (Picci P, Gorlick R, Bielack SS and Bacci G) made the best contributions. We also identified eight hotspots and collected 41 clinical trials related to drug research on osteosarcoma.

CONCLUSIONS

The urgent need exists to strengthen global academic exchanges. Overcoming multidrug resistance in osteosarcoma is the focus of past, present and future investigations. Transformation of the metastasis pattern, microenvironment genetics mechanism, alternative methods of systemic chemotherapy and exploration of traditional Chinese medicine is expected to contribute to a new upsurge of research.

A Study of eHealth from the Perspective of Social Sciences

The field of social sciences has become increasingly important in eHealth. Patients currently engage more proactively with health services. This means that eHealth is linked to many different areas of Social Sciences. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the state-of-the-art research on eHealth from the perspective of social sciences. To this end, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science database. The main findings show the evolution of publications, the most influential countries, the most relevant journals and papers, and the importance of the different areas of knowledge. Although there are some studies on eHealth within social sciences, most of them focus on very specific aspects and do not develop a holistic analysis. Thus, this paper contributes to academia by analyzing the state-of-the-art of research, as well as identifying the most relevant trends and proposing future lines of research such as the potential of eHealth as a professional training instrument, development of predictive models in eHealth, analysis of the eHealth technology acceptance model (TAM), efficient integration of eHealth within public systems, efficient budget management, or improvement in the quality of service for patients.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Primary Aldosteronism Research From 2000 to 2020

Thousands of papers on primary aldosteronism (PA) have been published in the last two decades. This study aimed to evaluate the research hotspots and future trends in PA research using bibliometric analysis. A total of 2,365 PA research papers between 2000 and 2020 were included. The dominant position of the United States in global PA research throughout this 20-year period was evident, and it was also the country most frequently involved in international cooperation. The University of Padua was the most productive institution and a leader in research collaboration. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism was the most productive journal in terms of the number of publications on PA. Further, Mulatero P, Reincke M, Beuschlein F and Wu VC all made significant contributions to PA research. Five hotspots have been identified: (1) metabolic syndrome associated with PA; (2) molecular mechanisms of PA; (3) adrenal adenoma and adrenal cortex; (4) hypertension associated with PA; and (5) clinical monitoring parameters and diagnosis in patients with PA. Our results suggest that the molecular mechanisms of PA will remain research hotspots in the future. International collaboration is also expected to widen and deepen in the field of PA research.

Research Hot Spots and Trends on Melatonin From 2000 to 2019

Research on melatonin remains one of the major hot spots in the field of disease treatment, but relevant data are numerous. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the progress of melatonin research through the method of bibliometrics and to predict hot spots and trends in melatonin research. This study retrieved all the studies on melatonin from 2000 to 2019 in the Web of Science and PubMed and analysed the publishing trends in the literature on a bibliometric online analysis platform and CiteSpace software. The research results were also visually analysed to summarize melatonin research hot spots through gCLUTO and pubMR. The study retrieved a total of 20,351 publications, of which the number of US publications ranked first, accounting for 21.46%, with the greatest impact (centrality = 0.31). The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Harvard University had the highest average number of citations at 43.19 and 33.96, respectively. Journal of Pineal Research had the highest average number of citations in 2,993 journals. Professor Reiter made the largest contribution to this area. We further analysed 100 highly cited articles for clinical applications and ongoing related clinical drug trials based on the first hot spot. We systematically analysed melatonin for nearly 20 years while predicting the main research trends in the future, which may provide new directions and ideas for melatonin research. The structure and normal physiological functions of melatonin have been intensively studied in the past few years. And clinical application research and target of melatonin treatment for different diseases and target-based drug design will certainly become the focus of melatonin research.

Research hotspots and trends analysis of ankylosing spondylitis: a bibliometric and scientometric analysis from 2009 to 2018

Background

This study utilized bibliometric analysis to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze hotspots and predict trends in the field of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) research.

Methods

Articles about AS were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection and PubMed database, and bibliometric analysis was carried out through CiteSpace and the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology and Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB). Then, co-word biclustering analysis was conducted to obtain research hotspots and predict trends using gCLUTO software.

Results

A total of 6,818 articles on AS from 2009 to 2018 were analyzed, showing an increasing publication trend (558 articles in 2009 to 851 articles in 2018). The Journal of Rheumatology was the leading journal in AS research, with an impact factor (IF) of 3.634 and H-index value of 49. In terms of region, the United States led the world in this field, and The University of Toronto was the leading institution for AS research. Van Der Heijde, D was the most prolific author in the field. Eight research hotspots in the field of AS were also identified.

Conclusions

Our analysis identified eight research hotspots, and predicted that surgical treatment and etiology will be the main AS research trends in the future. This study provides new directions and ideas for future research in AS.

Scientific Publication Patterns of Mobile Technologies and Apps for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Treatment: Bibliometric Co-Word Analysis

Background

Mobile apps are viewed as a promising opportunity to provide support for patients who have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The development of mobile technologies and apps shows similar trends in PTSD treatment. Therefore, this emerging research field has received substantial attention. Consequently, various research settings are planned for current and further studies.

Objective

The aim of this study was to explore the scientific patterns of research domains related to mobile apps and other technologies for PTSD treatment in scholarly publications, and to suggest further studies for this emerging research field.

Methods

We conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify publication patterns, most important keywords, trends for topicality, and text analysis, along with construction of a word cloud for papers published in the last decade (2010 to 2019). Research questions were formulated based on the relevant literature. In particular, we concentrated on highly ranked sources. Based on the proven bibliometric approach, the data were ultimately retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (Clarivate Analytics).

Results

A total of 64 studies were found concerning the research domains. The vast majority of the papers were written in the English language (63/64, 98%) with the remaining article (1/64, 2%) written in French. The articles were written by 323 authors/coauthors from 11 different countries, with the United States predominating, followed by England, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, France, Germany, Mexico, Sweden, and Vietnam. The most common publication type was peer-reviewed journal articles (48/64, 75%), followed by reviews (8/64, 13%), meeting abstracts (5/64, 8%), news items (2/64, 3%), and a proceeding (1/64, 2%). There was a mean of 6.4 papers published per year over the study period. There was a 100% increase in the number of publications published from 2016 to 2019 with a mean of 13.33 papers published per year during this latter period.

Conclusions

Although the number of papers on mobile technologies for PTSD was quite low in the early period, there has been an overall increase in this research domain in recent years (2016-2019). Overall, these findings indicate that mobile health tools in combination with traditional treatment for mental disorders among veterans increase the efficiency of health interventions, including reducing PTSD symptoms, improving quality of life, conducting intervention evaluation, and monitoring of improvements. Mobile apps and technologies can be used as supportive tools in managing pain, anger, stress, and sleep disturbance. These findings therefore provide a useful overview of the publication trends on research domains that can inform further studies and highlight potential gaps in this field.

Bufalin: A Systematic Review of Research Hotspots and Antitumor Mechanisms by Text Mining and Bioinformatics

Bufalin is an anticancer drug extract from traditional Chinese medicine. Several articles about bufalin have been published. However, the literature on bufalin has not yet been systematically studied. This study aimed to identify the study status and knowledge structures of bufalin and to summarize the antitumor mechanism. Data were retrieved and downloaded from the PubMed database. The softwares of BICOMB, gCLUTO, Ucinet 6.0, and NetDraw2.084 were used to analyze these publications. The bufalin related genes were recognized and tagged by ABNER software. Then these BF-related genes were performed by Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways analysis, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis. A total of 474 papers met the search criteria from 2000 to 2019. By biclustering clustering analysis, the 50 high-frequency main MeSH terms/subheadings were classified into 5 clusters. The clusters of drug therapy and the mechanism of bufalin were hotspot topics. A total of 50 genes were identified as BF-related genes. PPI network analysis showed that inducing apoptosis was the main effect of bufalin, and apoptosis-related gene Caspase 3 was the most reported by people. Bufalin could inhibit the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of cancer cells through multiple signaling pathways, such as PI3K/AKT, Hedgehog, MAPK/JNK, Wnt/[Formula: see text]-catenin, TGF-[Formula: see text]/Smad, Integrin signaling pathway, and NF-KB signaling pathway via KEGG analysis. Through the quantitative analysis of bufalin literature, we revealed the research status and hot spots in this field and provided some guidance for further research.

Mapping Intellectual Structure and Research Performance for the Nanoparticles in Pancreatic Cancer Field

Objective

To comprehensively analyze the global scientific outputs of nanoparticles in pancreatic cancer research.

Methods

Publications regarding the nanoparticles in pancreatic cancer research published from 1986 to 2019 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Highly frequent keywords, publication years, journals, cited papers, cited journals and cited authors were identified using BICOMB software, and then a binary matrix and a co-word matrix were constructed. gCLUTO was used for double clustering of highly frequent journals. Co-citation analysis was performed using CiteSpace V software, including keywords, references, journals author or institution cooperation network.

Results

A total of 1171 publications were included in this study. Publications mainly came from 10 countries, led by the US (n=470) and China (n=349). Among the top 20 journals ranked by the number of citations, nanoscience nanotechnology was the leader with 300. Cluster analysis of citation network identified 12 co-citation clusters, headed by “stromal barrier” and “emerging inorganic nanomaterial”.

Conclusion

Our findings reveal the research performance and intellectual structure of the nanoparticles in pancreatic cancer research, which may help researchers understand the research trends and hotspots in this field.

Theme Trends and Knowledge Structure on Mobile Health Apps: Bibliometric Analysis

Background

Due to the widespread and unprecedented popularity of mobile phones, the use of digital medicine and mobile health apps has seen significant growth. Mobile health apps have tremendous potential for monitoring and treating diseases, improving patient care, and promoting health.

Objective

This paper aims to explore research trends, coauthorship networks, and the research hot spots of mobile health app research.

Methods

Publications related to mobile health apps were retrieved and extracted from the Web of Science database with no language restrictions. Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder was employed to extract bibliographic information (publication year and journal source) and perform a descriptive analysis. We then used the VOSviewer (Leiden University) tool to construct and visualize the co-occurrence networks of researchers, research institutions, countries/regions, citations, and keywords.

Results

We retrieved 2802 research papers on mobile health apps published from 2000 to 2019. The number of annual publications increased over the past 19 years. JMIR mHealth and uHealth (323/2802, 11.53%), Journal of Medical Internet Research (106/2802, 3.78%), and JMIR Research Protocols (82/2802, 2.93%) were the most common journals for these publications. The United States (1186/2802, 42.33%), England (235/2802, 8.39%), Australia (215/2802, 7.67%), and Canada (112/2802, 4.00%) were the most productive countries of origin. The University of California San Francisco, the University of Washington, and the University of Toronto were the most productive institutions. As for the authors’ contributions, Schnall R, Kuhn E, Lopez-Coronado M, and Kim J were the most active researchers. The co-occurrence cluster analysis of the top 100 keywords forms 5 clusters: (1) the technology and system development of mobile health apps; (2) mobile health apps for mental health; (3) mobile health apps in telemedicine, chronic disease, and medication adherence management; (4) mobile health apps in health behavior and health promotion; and (5) mobile health apps in disease prevention via the internet.

Conclusions

We summarize the recent advances in mobile health app research and shed light on their research frontier, trends, and hot topics through bibliometric analysis and network visualization. These findings may provide valuable guidance on future research directions and perspectives in this rapidly developing field.

Global Research Output and Theme Trends on Climate Change and Infectious Diseases: A Restrospective Bibliometric and Co-Word Biclustering Investigation of Papers Indexed in PubMed (1999-2018)

Climate change is a challenge for the sustainable development of an international economy and society. The impact of climate change on infectious diseases has been regarded as one of the most urgent research topics. In this paper, an analysis of the bibliometrics, co-word biclustering, and strategic diagram was performed to evaluate global scientific production, hotspots, and developing trends regarding climate change and infectious diseases, based on the data of two decades (1999–2008 and 2009–2018) from PubMed. According to the search strategy and inclusion criteria, a total of 1443 publications were found on the topic of climate change and infectious diseases. There has been increasing research productivity in this field, which has been supported by a wide range of subject categories. The top highly-frequent major MeSH (medical subject headings)/subheading combination terms could be divided into four clusters for the first decade and five for the second decade using a biclustering analysis. At present, some significant public health challenges (global health, and travel and tropical climate, etc.) are at the center of the whole target research network. In the last ten years, “Statistical model”, “Diarrhea”, “Dengue”, “Ecosystem and biodiversity”, and “Zoonoses” have been considered as emerging hotspots, but they still need more attention for further development.

Bibliometric analysis of subject trends and knowledge structures of gut microbiota

BACKGROUND

Gut microbiota is an emerging field of research, with related research having breakthrough development in the past 15 years. Bibliometric analysis can be applied to analyze the evolutionary trends and emerging hotspots in this field.

AIM

To study the subject trends and knowledge structures of gut microbiota related research fields from 2004 to 2018.

METHODS

The literature data on gut microbiota were identified and downloaded from the PubMed database. Through biclustering analysis, strategic diagrams, and social network analysis diagrams, the main trend and knowledge structure of research fields concerning gut microbiota were analyzed to obtain and compare the research hotspots in each period.

RESULTS

According to the strategic coordinates and social relationship network map, Clostridium Infections/microbiology, Clostridium Infections/therapy, RNA, Ribosomal, 16S/genetics, Microbiota/genetics, Microbiota/immunology, Dysbiosis/immunology, Infla-mmation/immunology, Fecal Microbiota Transplantation/methods, Fecal Microbiota Transplantation can be used as an emerging research hotspot in the past 5 years (2014-2018).

CONCLUSION

Some subjects were not yet fully studied according to the strategic coordinates; and the emerging hotspots in the social network map can be considered as directions of future research.

Bibliometric Analysis of Pediatric Liver Transplantation Research in PubMed from 2014 to 2018

BACKGROUND Pediatric liver transplantation is used to treat children with end-stage liver disease. This study explored the research hotspots and bibliometric characteristics of pediatric liver transplantation through a variety of bibliometric analysis software. We conducted hotspot analysis to help determine important directions for future scientific research. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study samples were articles related to pediatric liver transplantation published in PubMed in the past 5 years. The high-frequency keywords are extracted by BICOMB software, and then a binary matrix and a common word matrix were constructed. Gcluto software was used to perform double-clustering and visual analysis on high-frequency words, and then we obtained hot area classification. Strategic coordinates are constructed using Excel. Citespace and VOSviewer software are used for further analysis and bibliometric data visualization. RESULTS A total of 36 high-frequency words were found in the 4118 studies. A peak map was drawn through double-cluster analysis. Biclustering analysis was used to calculate the concentricity and density of each hotspot. We obtained the top 10 countries/regions engaged in pediatric liver transplantation research. VOSviewer was used to visualize the co-author map. CONCLUSIONS We found 5 clusters and 7 aspects for pediatric liver transplantation. Additionally, calculation results showed that post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder in pediatric patients and outcomes of multivisceral transplantation seem very promising. This conclusion is of great value for future exploratory research.

Multidimensional Feature Classification of the Health Information Needs of Patients With Hypertension in an Online Health Community Through Analysis of 1000 Patient Question Records: Observational Study

Background

With the rapid development of online health communities, increasing numbers of patients and families are seeking health information on the internet.

Objective

This study aimed to discuss how to fully reveal the health information needs expressed by patients with hypertension in their questions in a web-based environment and how to use the internet to help patients with hypertension receive personalized health education.

Methods

This study randomly selected 1000 text records from the question data of patients with hypertension from 2008 to 2018 collected from Good Doctor Online and constructed a classification system through literature research and content analysis. This paper identified the background characteristics and questioning intention of each patient with hypertension based on the patient’s question and used co-occurrence network analysis and the k-means clustering method to explore the features of the health information needs of patients with hypertension.

Results

The classification system for the health information needs of patients with hypertension included the following nine dimensions: drugs (355 names), symptoms and signs (395 names), tests and examinations (545 names), demographic data (526 kinds), diseases (80 names), risk factors (37 names), emotions (43 kinds), lifestyles (6 kinds), and questions (49 kinds). There were several characteristics of the explored web-based health information needs of patients with hypertension. First, more than 49% of patients described features, such as drugs, symptoms and signs, tests and examinations, demographic data, and diseases. Second, patients with hypertension were most concerned about treatment (778/1000, 77.80%), followed by diagnosis (323/1000, 32.30%). Third, 65.80% (658/1000) of patients asked physicians several questions at the same time. Moreover, 28.30% (283/1000) of patients were very concerned about how to adjust the medication, and they asked other treatment-related questions at the same time, including drug side effects, whether to take the drugs, how to treat the disease, etc. Furthermore, 17.60% (176/1000) of patients consulted physicians about the causes of clinical findings, including the relationship between the clinical findings and a disease, the treatment of a disease, and medications and examinations. Fourth, by k-means clustering, the questioning intentions of patients with hypertension were classified into the following seven categories: “how to adjust medication,” “what to do,” “how to treat,” “phenomenon explanation,” “test and examination,” “disease diagnosis,” and “disease prognosis.”

Conclusions

In a web-based environment, the health information needs expressed by Chinese patients with hypertension to physicians are common and distinct, that is, patients with different background features ask relatively common questions to physicians. The classification system constructed in this study can provide guidance to health information service providers for the construction of web-based health resources, as well as guidance for patient education, which could help solve the problem of information asymmetry in communication between physicians and patients.

Current Trends in Research on Bone Regeneration: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background

Bone regeneration is a frequent research topic in clinical studies, but macroscopic studies on the clinical application of bone regeneration are rare. We conducted a bibliometric analysis, using international databases, to explore the clinical application and mechanism of bone regeneration, to highlight the relevant research hotspots and prospects. Material and Methods. Scientific reports on bone regeneration published during 2009–2019 were retrieved from PubMed. VOSviewer for cooccurrence keywords and authorship analysis. BICOMB software was used to retrieve high-frequency words and construct a text/coword matrix. The matrix was inputted into gCLUTO software, managed by biclustering analysis, in order to identify hotspots, which could achieve mountain and matrix visualizations. The matrix was also analyzed by using Ucinet 6 software for social network analysis. A strategic diagram was used for further analysis of the research hotspots of bone regeneration by “SCIMAT” software. We searched the Web of Science for relevant articles.

Results

Eighty-nine high-frequency major MeSH terms were obtained from 10237 articles and were divided into 5 clusters. We generated a network visualization map, an overlay visualization mountain map, and a social network diagram. Then, the MeSH terms were subdivided into 7 categories according to each diagram; current research hotspots were identified as scaffold, drug effect, osseointegration in dental implant, guided bone regeneration, factors impacting bone regeneration, treatment of bone and tissue loss, and bone regeneration in dental implants.

Conclusion

BICOMB, VOSviewer, and other bibliometric tools revealed that dental implants, scaffolds, and factors impacting bone regeneration are hot research topics, while scaffolds also hold promise from the perspective of bone tissue regeneration.

E-health. Patterns of use and perceived benefits and barriers among people living with HIV and their physicians. Part 1: Information retrieval on the Internet and social networks

OBJECTIVES

To identify patterns of use, perceived benefits, and barriers among people living with HIV (PLHIV) of online searches for health information and via social media.

METHODS

Online multicentre observational survey (October 15th-19th, 2018).

RESULTS

Study participation was accepted by 838/1377 PLHIV followed in 46 centres, of which 325 (39%) responded online: 181 (56%) had already used the Internet to search for health information; 88/181 (49%) on HIV infection and 78 (43%) on nutrition. These 56% were characterised by a higher educational level (OR=1.82±0.50; P=0.028) and more often consulted other specialists (OR=3.14±1.26; P=0.004). A subset of 87/180 (48%) PLHIV had changed the way they looked after their health based on their online research, and were more often in material/social deprivation (P=0.02) and diabetic (P=0.02). A small subset of 19/180 (11%) had already asked or answered a question on a forum; these people tended to be women (P=0.03) in material/social deprivation (P=0.009). 296/322 (92%) PLHIV trusted their physician whereas only 206 (64%) trusted information sourced on medical websites. 238/323 (74%) PLHIV expected their physicians to recommend websites if asked, whereas only 23/323 (7%) had actually been given this guidance.

CONCLUSION

More than half of PLHIV surveyed had already searched for health information on the Internet, and one in two had changed their behaviour based on the online search. PLHIV did not see the Internet as an alternative to physicians but they wanted their physicians to guide them on how to find quality health information to better self-manage their condition.

Search trends and prediction of human brucellosis using Baidu index data from 2011 to 2018 in China

Reporting on brucellosis, a relatively rare infectious disease caused by Brucella, is often delayed or incomplete in traditional disease surveillance systems in China. Internet search engine data related to brucellosis can provide an economical and efficient complement to a conventional surveillance system because people tend to seek brucellosis-related health information from Baidu, the largest search engine in China. In this study, brucellosis incidence data reported by the CDC of China and Baidu index data were gathered to evaluate the relationship between them. We applied an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and an ARIMA model with Baidu search index data as the external variable (ARIMAX) to predict the incidence of brucellosis. The two models based on brucellosis incidence data were then compared, and the ARIMAX model performed better in all the measurements we applied. Our results illustrate that Baidu index data can enhance the traditional surveillance system to monitor and predict brucellosis epidemics in China.

The publication trends and hot spots of scoliosis research from 2009 to 2018: a 10-year bibliometric analysis

Background

This study aims to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the trends in scoliosis research and evaluate research hotspots using bibliometric analysis.

Methods

All relevant publications on scoliosis from the period from 2009 to 2018 were extracted from the Web of Science and PubMed databases. Publication trends were analyzed using an Online analysis platform of literature metrology, Bibliographic Item Co-occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB), and CiteSpace software. Hotspots were analyzed and visualized using the gCLUTO software package.

Results

A total of 7,445 scoliosis research publications dated between 2009 and 2018 were found. The spine was the most popular journal in this field during this period. The United States maintained a top position in global scoliosis research throughout the 10 years and has had a pivotal influence, followed by China and Canada. Among all institutions, the University of California, San Francisco, was a leader in research collaboration. At the same time, Professors Yong Qiu and Lawrence G. Lenke made great achievements in scoliosis research. We analyzed the major Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms/MeSH subheadings and identified eight hotspots in scoliosis research.

Conclusions

We summarized the publication information of scoliosis-related literature in the 10 years from 2009 to 2018, including country and institution of origin, authors, and publication journal. We analyzed former research hotspots in the field of scoliosis and predicted future areas of interest. The development of various new orthopedic plants, artificial intelligence diagnosis, and genetic research will be future hotspots in scoliosis research.

Mapping Theme Trends and Knowledge Structure of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Studies of Schizophrenia: A Bibliometric Analysis From 2004 to 2018

BACKGROUND

Recently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology has been widely used to quantitatively analyze brain structure, morphology, and functional activities, as well as to clarify the neuropathological and neurobiological mechanisms of schizophrenia. However, although there have been many relevant results and conclusions, there has been no systematic assessment of this field.

AIM

To analyze important areas of research utilizing MRI in studies of schizophrenia and explore major trends and the knowledge structure using bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

Literature related to MRI studies of schizophrenia published in PubMed between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2018 were retrieved in 5-year increments. The extracted major Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms/MeSH subheadings were analyzed quantitatively. Bi-clu-stering analysis, social network analysis (SNA), and strategic diagrams were employed to analyze the word matrix and co-occurrence matrix of high-frequency MeSH terms.

RESULTS

For the periods of 2004 to 2008, 2009 to 2013, and 2014 to 2018, the number of relevant retrieved publications were 916, 1,344, and 1,512 respectively, showing an overall growth trend. 26, 34, and 36 high-frequency major MeSH terms/MeSH subheadings were extracted in each period, respectively. In line with strategic diagrams, the main undeveloped theme clusters in 2004-2008 were effects of antipsychotics on brain structure and their curative efficacy. These themes were replaced in 2009-2013 by physiopathology mechanisms of schizophrenia, etiology of cognitive disorder, research on default mode network and schizophrenic psychology, and were partially replaced in 2014-2018 by studies of differences in the neurobiological basis for schizophrenia and other mental disorders. Based on SNA, nerve net/physiopathology and psychotic disorder/pathology were considered the emerging hotspots of research in 2009-2013 and 2014-2018.

CONCLUSIONS

MRI studies on schizophrenia were relatively diverse, but the theme clusters derived from each period may reflect the publication trends to some extent. Bibliometric research over a 15-year period may be helpful in depicting the overall scope of research interest and may generate novel ideas for researchers initiating new projects.

Exploring the Effects of Patient Activation in Online Health Communities on Patient Compliance

Background: Online health communities (OHCs) are one of the developments related to online health. Patient compliance plays a vital role in improving health treatment outcomes. Patient activation is associated with patient activities in OHCs, such as physician-patient communication and health information seeking. In other words, OHCs influence patient compliance. Therefore, identifying the relationship between patient activation in OHCs and patient compliance is important for improved health outcomes. Methods: This study established a research model consisting of one independent variable (patient activation), four mediators (physician-patient communication, health information seeking, perceived information asymmetry, and e-health literacy), one dependent variable (patient compliance) and four control variables (gender, age, education level, and status). Data were obtained through a web-based survey, involving a total of 387 valid participants in China. These data were analyzed and tested through structural equation modeling and partial least squares. Results: Patient activation positively affects patient compliance through the mediation of physician-patient communication, health information seeking, perceived information asymmetry, and e-health literacy. Perceived information asymmetry has no direct effect on patient compliance. However, perceived information asymmetry affects patient compliance through the mediation of e-health literacy. Conclusions: Patient compliance is significantly affected by patient activation. Thus, physicians can achieve higher patient compliance by improving patient activation. Guaranteeing and improving the information quality in OHCs is essential for physicians and OHCs operators. Physicians should pay extra attention in cultivating patients' e-health literacy through communications and health information-seeking behaviors to further improve patient compliance.

Intellectual Structure and Evolutionary Trends of Precision Medicine Research: Coword Analysis

BACKGROUND

Precision medicine (PM) is playing a more and more important role in clinical practice. In recent years, the scale of PM research has been growing rapidly. Many reviews have been published to facilitate a better understanding of the status of PM research. However, there is still a lack of research on the intellectual structure in terms of topics.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to identify the intellectual structure and evolutionary trends of PM research through the application of various social network analysis and visualization methods.

METHODS

The bibliographies of papers published between 2009 and 2018 were extracted from the Web of Science database. Based on the statistics of keywords in the papers, a coword network was generated and used to calculate network indicators of both the entire network and local networks. Communities were then detected to identify subdirections of PM research. Topological maps of networks, including networks between communities and within each community, were drawn to reveal the correlation structure. An evolutionary graph and a strategic graph were finally produced to reveal research venation and trends in discipline communities.

RESULTS

The results showed that PM research involves extensive themes and, overall, is not balanced. A minority of themes with a high frequency and network indicators, such as Biomarkers, Genomics, Cancer, Therapy, Genetics, Drug, Target Therapy, Pharmacogenomics, Pharmacogenetics, and Molecular, can be considered the core areas of PM research. However, there were five balanced theme directions with distinguished status and tendencies: Cancer, Biomarkers, Genomics, Drug, and Therapy. These were shown to be the main branches that were both focused and well developed. Therapy, though, was shown to be isolated and undeveloped.

CONCLUSIONS

The hotspots, structures, evolutions, and development trends of PM research in the past ten years were revealed using social network analysis and visualization. In general, PM research is unbalanced, but its subdirections are balanced. The clear evolutionary and developmental trend indicates that PM research has matured in recent years. The implications of this study involving PM research will provide reasonable and effective support for researchers, funders, policymakers, and clinicians.

Recent trends in diabetes-related consumer health information technology research

Diabetes-related consumer health information technology (CHIT) has been designed to facilitate self-management practices, and its use has improved health outcomes for many consumers. This analysis sought to identify tendencies in diabetes-related CHIT research from 2010-2015 to help researchers find novel research topics, periodicals, collaborators, and funding agencies and experts and lay consumers to find scholarly information. Six search engines encompassing computer science, engineering, and medicine yielded potential diabetes-related CHIT publications. Abstracts and full texts were screened based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Information on year, periodical, periodical domain, keywords, author location, author institutions, authors, and funding agencies were collected from included publications. The screening process yielded 1551 publications. Studies were published in a core of twenty periodicals, commonly comprising medicine or technology domains. "Telemedicine" was the most frequently used keyword. Harvard University, Dr. Eirik Årsand, and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases were the most frequent author institution, author, and funding agency, respectively, associated with publications. This analysis revealed potential for novel research on the sociology and economics of diabetes-related CHIT, among other topics. A lack of collaboration between top authors in the field indicates potential for new, impactful collaborations. Ongoing bibliometric research will be necessary to assess changes in this field. The opportunity exists to inform lay consumers and researchers through bibliometric analyses of other consumer health informatics topics.

Research on the Development of Theme Trends and Changes of Knowledge Structures of Drug Therapy Studies on Major Depressive Disorder Since the 21st Century: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Antidepressant treatment is one of the most effective ways of relieving or curing depressive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Although many studies have explored the efficacy, tolerability, adverse reactions, and functional mechanism of the disease, there has been no systematic evaluation of the relevant results in this field.

AIM

This paper aims to analyze the theme trends and knowledge structure of drug therapy studies on MDD since the 21^st century by employing bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

Literature published in PubMed and related to drug therapy studies on MDD were retrieved between 2001 and 2018 in 6-year increments. After extracting major Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms/MeSH subheadings, bi-clustering analysis, social network analysis, and strategic diagrams were employed to complete bibliometric analysis.

RESULTS

Overall, 1,577, 2,680, 2,848 relevant research articles were retrieved for the periods during 2001-2006, 2007-2012, and 2013-2018, respectively. In line with strategic diagrams, the main undeveloped and peripheral theme clusters during 2001-2006 were functional mechanisms of antidepressants in pathophysiology, neuroendocrinology and neural biochemistry. These themes were replaced during 2007-2012 by clinical efficacy and influencing factors of antidepressants with or without psychotherapy, mechanisms of adverse reactions of antidepressants, and predictive studies of clinical therapeutic effects of antidepressants based on brain imaging. During 2013-2018 application and evaluation of new antidepressant agents, early identification and prevention of suicide of patients with MDD, as well as genetic- or bio-markers affecting the response and efficacy of antidepressants were the primary themes. Based on social network analyses, emerging hotspots, such as antidepressive agents, second-generation/adverse effects, depressive disorder, major/metabolism, psychotherapy/methods, and brain/drug effects could be identified during 2007-2012 and 2013-2018.

CONCLUSIONS

These undeveloped theme clusters and emerging hotspots can be helpful for researchers to clarify the current status of their respective fields and future trends, and to generate novel ideas that may launch new research directions.

Impact of Automatic Query Generation and Quality Recognition Using Deep Learning to Curate Evidence From Biomedical Literature: Empirical Study

BACKGROUND

The quality of health care is continuously improving and is expected to improve further because of the advancement of machine learning and knowledge-based techniques along with innovation and availability of wearable sensors. With these advancements, health care professionals are now becoming more interested and involved in seeking scientific research evidence from external sources for decision making relevant to medical diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis. Not much work has been done to develop methods for unobtrusive and seamless curation of data from the biomedical literature.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to design a framework that can enable bringing quality publications intelligently to the users' desk to assist medical practitioners in answering clinical questions and fulfilling their informational needs.

METHODS

The proposed framework consists of methods for efficient biomedical literature curation, including the automatic construction of a well-built question, the recognition of evidence quality by proposing extended quality recognition model (E-QRM), and the ranking and summarization of the extracted evidence.

RESULTS

Unlike previous works, the proposed framework systematically integrates the echelons of biomedical literature curation by including methods for searching queries, content quality assessments, and ranking and summarization. Using an ensemble approach, our high-impact classifier E-QRM obtained significantly improved accuracy than the existing quality recognition model (1723/1894, 90.97% vs 1462/1894, 77.21%).

CONCLUSIONS

Our proposed methods and evaluation demonstrate the validity and rigorousness of the results, which can be used in different applications, including evidence-based medicine, precision medicine, and medical education.

Mapping theme trends and recognizing hot spots in postmenopausal osteoporosis research: a bibliometric analysis

Background

This study aimed to draw a series of scientific maps to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate hot spots and trends in postmenopausal osteoporosis research using bibliometric analysis.

Methods

Scientific papers published on postmenopausal osteoporosis were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection and PubMed database. Extracted information was analyzed quantitatively with bibliometric analysis by CiteSpace, the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology and Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB). To explore the hot spots in this field, co-word biclustering analysis was conducted by gCLUTO based on the major MeSH terms/MeSH subheading terms-source literatures matrix.

Results

We identified that a total of 5,247 publications related to postmenopausal osteoporosis were published between 2013 and 2017. The overall trend decreased from 1,071 literatures in 2013 to 1,048 literatures in 2017. Osteoporosis International is the leading journal in the field of postmenopausal osteoporosis research, both in terms of impact factor score (3.819) and H-index value (157). The United States has retained a top position and has exerted a pivotal influence in this field. The University of California, San Francisco was identified as a leading institution for research collaboration, and Professors Reginster and Kanis have made great achievements in this area. Eight research hot spots were identified.

Conclusions

Our study found that in the past few years, the etiology and drug treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis have been research hot spots. They provide a basis for the study of the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and guidelines for the drug treatment of osteoporosis.

Identification of research trends concerning application of stent implantation in the treatment of pancreatic diseases by quantitative and biclustering analysis: a bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVES

In recent years, with the development of biological materials, the types and clinical applications of stents have been increasing in pancreatic diseases. However, relevant problems are also constantly emerging. Our purpose was to summarize current hotspots and explore potential topics in the fields of the application of stent implantation in the treatment of pancreatic diseases for future scientific research.

METHODS

Publications on the application of stents in pancreatic diseases were retrieved from PubMed without language limits. High-frequency Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms were identified through Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB). Biclustering analysis results were visualized utilizing the gCLUTO software. Finally, we plotted a strategic diagram.

RESULTS

A total of 4,087 relevant publications were obtained from PubMed until May 15th, 2018. Eighty-three high-frequency MeSH terms were identified. Biclustering analysis revealed that these high-frequency MeSH terms were classified into eight clusters. After calculating the density and concentricity of each cluster, strategy diagram was presented. The cluster 5 "complications such as pancreatitis associated with stent implantation" was located at the fourth quadrant with high centricity and low density.

CONCLUSIONS

In our study, we found eight topics concerning the application of stent implantation in the treatment of pancreatic diseases. How to reduce the incidence of postoperative complications and improve the prognosis of patients with pancreatic diseases by stent implantation could become potential hotspots in the future research.

Mapping theme trends and knowledge structures for human neural stem cells: a quantitative and co-word biclustering analysis for the 2013-2018 period

Neural stem cells, which are capable of multi-potential differentiation and self-renewal, have recently been shown to have clinical potential for repairing central nervous system tissue damage. However, the theme trends and knowledge structures for human neural stem cells have not yet been studied bibliometrically. In this study, we retrieved 2742 articles from the PubMed database from 2013 to 2018 using "Neural Stem Cells" as the retrieval word. Co-word analysis was conducted to statistically quantify the characteristics and popular themes of human neural stem cell-related studies. Bibliographic data matrices were generated with the Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder. We identified 78 high-frequency Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms. A visual matrix was built with the repeated bisection method in gCLUTO software. A social network analysis network was generated with Ucinet 6.0 software and GraphPad Prism 5 software. The analyses demonstrated that in the 6-year period, hot topics were clustered into five categories. As suggested by the constructed strategic diagram, studies related to cytology and physiology were well-developed, whereas those related to neural stem cell applications, tissue engineering, metabolism and cell signaling, and neural stem cell pathology and virology remained immature. Neural stem cell therapy for stroke and Parkinson's disease, the genetics of microRNAs and brain neoplasms, as well as neuroprotective agents, Zika virus, Notch receptor, neural crest and embryonic stem cells were identified as emerging hot spots. These undeveloped themes and popular topics are potential points of focus for new studies on human neural stem cells.

Impact of Physician-Patient Communication in Online Health Communities on Patient Compliance: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study

Background

In China, the utilization of medical resources is tense, and most hospitals are highly congested because of the large population and uneven distribution of medical resources. Online health communities (OHCs) play an important role in alleviating hospital congestions, thereby improving the utilization of medical resources and relieving medical resource shortages. OHCs have positive effects on physician-patient relationships and health outcomes. Moreover, as one of the main ways for patients to seek health-related information in OHCs, physician-patient communication may affect patient compliance in various ways. In consideration of the inevitable development of OHCs, although they have several shortcomings, identifying how physician-patient communication can impact patient compliance is important to improve patients’ health outcomes through OHCs.

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the impact of physician-patient communication on patient compliance in OHCs through the mediation of the perceived quality of internet health information, decision-making preference, and physician-patient concordance, using an empirical study based on the self-determination theory.

Methods

A research model was established, including 1 independent variable (physician-patient communication), 3 mediators (perceived quality of internet health information, decision-making preference, and physician-patient concordance), 1 dependent variable (patient compliance), and 4 control variables (age, gender, living area, and education level). Furthermore, a Web-based survey involving 423 valid responses was conducted in China to collect data, and structural equation modeling and partial least squares were adopted to analyze data and test the hypotheses.

Results

The questionnaire response rate was 79.2% (487/615) and the validity rate was 86.9% (423/487); reliability and validity are acceptable. The communication between physicians and patients in OHCs positively affects patient compliance through the mediation of the perceived quality of internet health information, decision-making preference, and physician-patient concordance. Moreover, physician-patient communication exhibits similar impacts on the perceived quality of internet health information, decision-making preference, and physician-patient concordance. Patients’ decision-making preference shows the weakest impact on patient compliance compared with the other 2 mediators. Ultimately, all 3 mediators play a partially mediating role between physician-patient communication and patient compliance.

Conclusions

We conclude that physician-patient communication in OHCs exhibits a positive impact on patient compliance; thus, patient compliance can be improved by guiding physician-patient communication in OHCs. Furthermore, our findings suggest that physicians can share high-quality health information with patients, discuss benefits, risks, and costs of treatment options with patients, encourage patients to express their attitudes and participate in health-related decision making, and strengthen the emotional connection with patients in OHCs, thereby decreasing patients’ misunderstanding of information and increasing concordance between physicians and patients. OHCs are required to not only strengthen the management of their published health information quality but also understand users’ actual attitudes toward information quality and then try to reduce the gap between the perceived and actual quality of information.

Why do patients follow physicians' advice? The influence of patients' regulatory focus on adherence: an empirical study in China

BACKGROUND

In general, medical regimens and treatments are more likely to be effective if patients follow their physicians' advice. However, limited studies have focused on the relationship between regulatory focus and patient adherence. This study explores the antecedents of patient adherence employing regulatory focus theory.

METHODS

This study established a research model consisting of two independent variables, two mediators, one dependent variable, two moderators, three control variables, and six hypotheses. An online survey involving 336 valid responses was conducted to collect data in China. We used structural equation modelling and confirmatory factor analysis to test the hypotheses and to develop the research model.

RESULTS

The reliability and validity of the measures were accepted. In terms of control variables, age had a positive effect on conservative treatment-related health information seeking behaviour, and patients with different resident statuses held different attitudes towards seeking conservative treatment-related health information. However, educational level did not have any effect on the variables of the research model. The hypothesis testing results corroborate that promotion focus had a positive impact on patients' emerging treatment-related health information seeking behaviour; prevention focus had a positive impact on patients' conservative treatment-related health information seeking behaviour, which had a positive impact on patient adherence. In addition, media campaigns had a positive impact on the relationship between promotion focus and emerging treatment-related health information seeking behaviour, and website reputation had a positive impact on the relationship between prevention focus and conservative treatment-related health information seeking behaviour.

CONCLUSIONS

Individuals can be encouraged to seek health information and share health-related knowledge through mass media, such as the Internet, when the quality of information, especially information from online sources, is guaranteed. In addition, physicians need to improve their professionalism and expand their knowledge of conservative healthcare. As a further application of our work, an Internet information recommendation system can be designed to recommend different types of health information for users according to their regulatory focus.

Online Health Information Seeking and eHealth Literacy Among Patients Attending a Primary Care Clinic in Hong Kong: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Background

Previous studies have suggested that patients’ online health information seeking affects their medical consultations and patient-doctor relationships. An up-to-date picture of patients’ online health information-seeking behaviors can inform and prepare frontline health care professionals to collaborate, facilitate, or empower their patients to access and manage health information found online.

Objective

This study explores the prevalence, patterns, and predictors of online health information-seeking behaviors among primary care patients in Hong Kong, and the relations between online health information seeking and electronic health (eHealth) literacy.

Methods

Patients attending a university primary care clinic in Hong Kong were asked to complete a questionnaire survey on their demographic backgrounds; health status; frequency and pattern of online health information seeking; contents, sources, and reasons for online health information seeking; and their eHealth literacy. eHealth literacy was measured by the validated eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS). Regression analyses explored various demographic and behavioral predictors to online health information seeking, and predictors to eHealth literacy.

Results

In all, 97.32% (1162/1194) respondents used the internet, of which 87.44% (1016/1162) had used the internet to find health information. Most respondents (65.97%, 665/1008) searched once monthly or more. Few (26.88%, 271/1008) asked their doctor about health information found online, but most doctors (56.1%, 152/271) showed little or no interest at all. The most sought topic was symptom (81.59%, 829/1016), the top reason was noticing new symptoms or change in health (70.08%, 712/1016), the most popular source was online encyclopedia (69.98%, 711/1016), and the top reason for choosing a source was convenience (55.41%, 563/1016). Poisson regression analysis identified high eHEALS score, fair or poor self-rated health, having a chronic medical condition, and using the internet several times a day as significant predictors of online health information seeking. Multiple regression analysis identified lower age, better self-rated health, more frequent internet use, more frequent online health information seeking, and more types of health information sought as significant predictors to higher eHealth literacy.

Conclusions

Online health information seeking is prevalent among primary care patients in Hong Kong, but only a minority shared the information with doctors. Websites were chosen more for convenience than for accuracy or authoritativeness. Doctors should recognize patients’ online health information-seeking behavior, and facilitate and empower them to search for high-quality online health information.

Identification of Recent Trends in Research on Vitamin D: A Quantitative and Co-Word Analysis

Background

In recent years, many studies on vitamin D have been published. We combed these data for hot spot analyses and predicted future research topic trends.

Material/Methods

Articles (4625) concerning vitamin D published in the past 3 years were selected as a study sample. Bibliographic Items Co-occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB) software was used to screen high-frequency Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and construct a MeSH terms-source article matrix and MeSH terms co-occurrence matrix. Then, Graphical Clustering Toolkit (gCLUTO) software was employed to analyze the matrix by double-clustering and visual analysis to detect the trends on the subject.

Results

Ninety high-frequency major MeSH terms were obtained from 4625 articles and divided into 5 clusters, and we generated a visualized matrix and a mountain map. Strategic coordinates were established by the co-occurrence matrix of the MeSH terms based on the above classification, and the 5 clusters described above were further divided into 7 topics. We classified the vitamin D-related diseases into 12 categories and analyzed their distribution.

Conclusions

The analysis of strategic coordinates revealed that the epidemiological study of vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D-related diseases is a hot research topic. The use of vitamin D in the prevention and treatment of some diseases, especially diabetes, was found to have a significant potential future research value.

Biclustering of Smart Building Electric Energy Consumption Data

Nowadays, smart buildings can collect data regarding the electric energy consumption, which can then be analyzed to gain insights or to predict or identify abnormal energy consumption. Numerous models are applied to face this problem but they are based on a global point of view and cannot detect local patterns of abnormal consumption. This work lies in the former option, as we propose a way to analyze energy consumption data from smart buildings. In particular, we use energy consumption data collected by various buildings over a five-year period. These data were analyzed to gain insight into the functioning of the considered buildings, with the aim of detecting anomalous situations, which could indicate that some energy usage policy should be changed or that there is a fault in the sensor network. In particular, we propose an approach based on biclustering, which allows obtaining subgroups of buildings that show a similar behaviour over a specific period of time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first application of biclustering to energy consumption data analysis. Results confirm that the proposed approach can help policy makers in detecting irregular situations, which can provide hints on how to improve the efficiency of buildings.

Mapping theme trends and knowledge structure on adipose-derived stem cells: a bibliometric analysis from 2003 to 2017

AIM

To investigate the theme trends and knowledge structure of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) related literatures by using bibliometric analysis.

MATERIALS & METHODS

Co-word analysis, strategic diagram and social network analysis were employed.

RESULTS

In line with strategic diagrams, ADSC differentiation and transplantation as main undeveloped themes in 2003-2007 were partially replaced by regeneration medicine and ADSCs for myocardial infarction in 2008 to 2012, and then partially replaced by miRNAs in ADSC genetics and nerve regeneration in 2013 to 2017. Based on social network analysis, regenerative medicine/methods, myocardial infarction/therapy, as well as miRNAs/genetics, and nerve regeneration/physiology were considered the emerging hot spots in 2008 to 2012 and 2013 to 2017.

CONCLUSION

The undeveloped themes and emerging hot spots could be considered as new research topics.

Scientometric Analysis of SIRT6 Studies

Background

SIRT6 is a molecule of significant interest in the field of epigenetics. This review of the literature aimed to explore research hotspots and other bibliometric features of SIRT6 by applying several bibliometric analysis tools and by establishing a comprehensive scientometric analysis model of SIRT6.

Material/Methods

The research sample included 441 articles related to SIRT6 obtained from the Web of Science core collection. Bicomb software was used to extract high frequency keywords, and then a binary matrix and a co-word matrix were constructed. We used Gcluto for double clustering, EXCEL for strategic coordinate building, Citespace software for co-citation analysis, CitNetExplorer for citation analysis, and Vosviewer for journal and term analysis.

Results

Research hotspots and the base knowledge of SIRT6 were determined by co-word and co-citation network analysis. The strategic coordinates approach was used to assess the research prospects of each hotspot and the connections between these hotspots. The distribution of disciplines and journals was determined and both a term density map and a dual-map were constructed by application of different tools.

Conclusions

SIRT6’s regulation of chromatin, lifespan, DNA damage, and metabolism make up the most important SIRT6 intellectual basis from the past 10 years. SIRT6 study has concentrated on the effects of this molecule on tumors and shown promising trends in understanding neural diseases. However, there has been little analysis of how SIRT6 effects are part of more complex systems. Work by Motoslavsky (2006) represents a milestone in SIRT6 research, and the studies by Kawahara 2009 and Kim 2010 are key in the knowledge transmission of SIRT6 research.

Trends and characteristics of global medical informatics conferences from 2007 to 2017: A bibliometric comparison of conference publications from Chinese, American, European and the Global Conferences

BACKGROUND

As the second-largest economy in the world, China has invested considerable financial and policy support into hospital informatization since health care reform in 2010. However, the results and experience of such investments have not been compared with relevant research and applications in the United States and Europe.

OBJECTIVES

From the perspective of professional conference proceedings, we comparatively analyzed the current situations, characteristics, hotspots, and trends of medical informatics (MI) development in China, the United States and Europe to help Chinese MI researchers and practitioners summarize their experiences and determine gaps compared to their American and European peers. We also aimed to educate foreign peers about the special contributions of the China MI circle and facilitate multilevel international cooperation.

METHODS

English conference proceedings of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Annual Symposium (USA), Medical Informatics Europe (MIE, Europe) and World Conference on Medical Informatics (MEDINFO, Global) from 2007 to 2017 were searched within Scopus and Pubmed. Proceedings of Chinese MI conferences (CMIAAS, CHINC, CHITEC, CPMI) (China) were searched within Chinese databases CQVIP, CNKI and WanFang during the same period. The datasets were preprocessed via a Natural Language Processing (NLP) package on Python and were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed via bibliometric methods.

RESULTS

Overall, 2285, 1601, 1930 and 5431 papers were publicized from the AMIA Symposium (USA), MIE (Europe), MEDINFO (Global) and Chinese MI conferences (China) between 2007 and 2017, respectively, with an H-index of 32, 19, 19 and 3, respectively. The AMIA Symposium, MIE and MEDINFO received submissions from 43, 68 and 80 countries (or regions), respectively, but Chinese MI conferences (CMIAAS, CHINC, CHITEC, CPMI) only received submissions from 3 foreign countries. Author affiliations were quite similar among the AMIA Symposium, MIE and MEDINFO, as 67%, 75% and 70% of authors came from universities/colleges, respectively; 18%, 10% and 11% came from medical institutions, respectively; and 7%, 8% and 10% came from institutes, respectively. In contrast, the majority (54%) of authors in Chinese MI conferences came from medical institutions followed by universities/colleges (17%) and institutes (10%). Of the top 5 authors with the most publications in AMIA Symposium, MIE and MEDINFO, 14/15 of them had medical backgrounds, but only one author from the Chinese MI conferences majored in medicine. Electronic medical records (EMR) were included in the top 10 high-frequency keywords by all four conference groups, but the amount of time that this keyword appeared differed in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The MI annual conferences are all different among China, the United States and Europe. China lags in the theoretical and discipline bases but has made considerable investments in the past 10 years. China should fully use its second-mover advantage and application advantages and utilize international experiences and cooperation to make stronger contributions to global MI development.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Cleft Lip and Palate-Related Publication Trends From 2000 to 2017

OBJECTIVE

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is the most common human cranial and maxillofacial birth defect. The aim of this bibliometric analysis was to provide an overview of the development of CLP-related research.

METHOD

Cleft lip and palate-related studies published from 2000 to 2017 were retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded core database. Publication date, journal, authors, first authors, keywords, and citations were extracted and quantitatively analyzed using Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder software. The word matrix and co-occurrence matrix were established, and the co-citation analysis, keyword clustering, and social network analysis (SNA) of highly cited papers were completed.

RESULTS

A total of 9040 articles were retrieved from the 18 years of publications that were searched. The number of documents steadily increased over the period of interest, with a slight decrease in 2016 and 2017. This article separately examined the top most cited papers and high-frequency keywords from 3 time periods: 2000 to 2005, 2006 to 2011, and 2011 to 2017. The strategy coordinates of citation reflect TGF-β3, MSX1 gene, technique for cleft lip repair, TTF2, P63, IRF6 gene, FGF signaling, PVRL1, TGFBR2, and BMP4 gene as areas of research interest in the field. Moreover, the SNA of keywords highlighted new research topics: meta-analysis, cone beam computed tomography, tooth agenesis, case-control study, association study, micrognathia, DiGeorge syndrome, NSCL/P, UCLP, GWAS, MTHFR, and CLPTM1L.

CONCLUSION

We conducted bibliometric research of CLP across an 18-year span. The results help to define an overall command of the latest topics in CLP and provide insight for launching new projects.

Evaluating the outcomes of medical informatics development as a discipline in China: A publication perspective

BACKGROUND

As the world's second largest economy, China makes unique contributions to the world in many fields, including sociology, the economy, technology and defense. Medical informatics (MI) is an important cross-disciplinary field that, along with its applications, has received massive funding from the Chinese government. However, the question of how to evaluate China's input and output in MI remains important and complex issue of great significance for China and the rest of the world.

OBJECTIVE

This paper analyzed, for the first time, the quality and quantity of research by Chinese academics in MI based on their articles published in international specialty journals in recent years and examined MI research hotspots in China. Our purpose is to summarize the experiences and lessons learned by China and the rest of the world as they develop MI.

METHOD

We targeted 18 MI journals listed in the JCR 2016 report and searched for papers published by Chinese academics in these 18 journals in the WOS and PUBMED databases and on journal sites. We also performed data cleansing and categorized the obtained information. We used Excel, SPSS, Ucinet and NetDraw to conduct quantitative analyses on the research papers.

RESULTS

A total of 1340 articles satisfied the inclusion criteria of this study. We observed a significant upward trend in the number of articles published over time, particularly after 2011. Lei Jianbo, Huang Zhengxing and Li Jin-song are active Chinese authors in the MI discipline who have written many high-quality publications. Meanwhile, universities remain the primary breeding grounds for scientific research: 93.36% of the articles came from universities. Zhejiang University published the most first-author articles, whereas Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tsinghua University produced 17.76% of the total articles. According to the lists of authors, 24% of the papers were co-authored with foreign researchers. This rate of cooperation is increasing each year, from 5.88% to the current rate of 39.04%. An analysis of keywords showed that "EMR", "SVM", "Authentication", "Telecare medical information system", "EEG", "ECG" and "RFID" were the most frequently searched terms in popular technological fields, including artificial intelligence and image processing. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of high-frequency keywords and a broadening range of research fields, which has led to the emergence of several research hotspots, including MI systems, mobile health care, telecare, data mining and machine learning.

CONCLUSIONS

Through the quantitative analysis of publications, we discovered the emergence of three stages - infancy, slow growth and rapid growth - in China's MI research in recent years as academics make achievements in their research works. The global influence of Chinese academics is growing, and they are making increasingly conscious efforts to enter into research collaborations with foreign researchers. The findings of Chinese academics' publications are gaining international recognition.

Mature or Emerging? The Impact of Treatment-Related Internet Health Information Seeking on Patients' Trust in Physicians

Years of clinical trials have proven the maturity and safety of certain treatments, however, some of these mature treatments may not be highly effective. Several treatments have emerged through technological innovations, but their long-term safety, efficacy, and adverse effects remain unknown. At present, many patients seek information related to their treatments on the Internet, which may impact their attitudes towards different treatments and their trust in physicians. In this study, a research model was developed to examine how patients’ trust in their physicians is influenced by related online information on mature or emerging treatments. The hypotheses were tested using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM). A total of 336 valid responses were collected through an online survey. Mature treatments related health information was found to significantly improve patients’ trust. Thus, physicians should pay more attention to mature treatments, and encourage their patients to seek related information online. Moreover, the quality of online information should be developed further to increase patients’ satisfaction. Physicians should also consider their patients’ psychological safety in communication with patients to strengthen their trust.

Relationship Between Internet Health Information and Patient Compliance Based on Trust: Empirical Study

Background

The internet has become a major mean for acquiring health information; however, Web-based health information is of mixed quality and may markedly affect patients’ health-related behavior and decisions. According to the social information processing theory, patients’ trust in their physicians may potentially change due to patients’ health-information-seeking behavior. Therefore, it is important to identify the relationship between internet health information and patient compliance from the perspective of trust.

Objective

The objective of our study was to investigate the effects of the quality and source of internet health information on patient compliance using an empirical study based on the social information processing theory and social exchange theory.

Methods

A Web-based survey involving 336 valid participants was conducted in China. The study included independent variables (internet health information quality and source of information), 2 mediators (cognition-based trust [CBT] and affect-based trust [ABT]), 1 dependent variable (patient compliance), and 3 control variables (gender, age, and job). All variables were measured using multiple-item scales from previously validated instruments, and confirmative factor analysis as well as structural equation modeling was used to test hypotheses.

Results

The questionnaire response rate was 77.16% (375/486), validity rate was 89.6% (336/375), and reliability and validity were acceptable. We found that the quality and source of internet health information affect patient compliance through the mediation of CBT and ABT. In addition, internet health information quality has a stronger influence on patient compliance than the source of information. However, CBT does not have any direct effect on patient compliance, but it directly affects ABT and then indirectly impacts patient compliance. Therefore, the effect of ABT seems stronger than that of CBT. We found an unexpected, nonsignificant relationship between the source of internet health information and ABT.

Conclusions

From patients’ perspective, internet health information quality plays a stronger role than its source in impacting their trust in physicians and the consequent compliance with physicians. Therefore, patient compliance can be improved by strengthening the management of internet health information quality. The study findings also suggest that physicians should focus on obtaining health information from health websites, thereby expanding their understanding of patients’ Web-based health-information-seeking preferences, and enriching their knowledge structure to show their specialization and reliability in the communication with patients. In addition, the mutual demonstration of care and respect in the communication between physicians and patients is important in promoting patients’ ABT in their physicians.

Bibliometric Analysis of Tumor Immunotherapy Studies

BACKGROUND Cancer immunotherapy is the use of the immune system to treat cancer. After years of research, there have been a significant number of publications in this field. We analyzed the literature and performed a hotspot analysis to identify important areas of future scientific research. MATERIAL AND METHODS Articles (2945) related to cancer immunotherapy published in the past 3 years were selected as the research sample. BICOMB software was then used to retrieve the high-frequency words and construct a text/co-word matrix. Next, gCLUTO software was used to analyze the matrix by double-clustering and visual analysis, in a strategy of hotspot identification. RESULTS We constructed a text and co-word matrix composed of 40 high-frequency words and 2945 articles and generated a hotspot "peak map" based on double-clustering analysis. The strategic coordinates were set by use of a co-word matrix and clustering analysis. The distribution of organs or disease and the subclass of cancer immunotherapy were analyzed. CONCLUSIONS In this study, we classified the hot-spots of "tumor immunotherapy" into 6 categories and 8 aspects. Calculation and analysis revealed that the field of tumor immunotherapy shows a slight trend of polarization, and the immune checkpoint inhibitor PD1 blocker shows the greatest potential for future development.

The emerging use of social media for health-related purposes in low and middle-income countries: A scoping review

Social media is being used in LMICs for health-related purposes (e.g., to facilitate disease surveillance, mass communication, health education, and knowledge translation).

The body of literature on social media use in LMICs is young, but beginning to mature with the recent, increased reporting of research studies.

Additional research is needed to expand the geographical focus and test strategies to facilitate the effective and efficient use of social media for health purposes in LMICs.

Increasing familiarity with existing and upcoming social media platforms, and the promotion of credible sites, is essential for healthcare professionals, agencies, and researchers.

Background

Social media allows for instant access to, and dissemination of, information around the globe. Access to social media in low- and middle-income countries has increased exponentially in recent years due to technological advances. Despite this growth, the use of social media in low- and middle-income countries is less well-researched than in high-income countries.

Objective

To identify, explore and summarize the current state of the literature on the use of social media for health in low- and middle-income countries.

Methods

A scoping review was conducted on literature available to December 2017. Six databases were searched, and grey literature was identified through the Google and Google Scholar search engines. Literature was considered for inclusion if it (1) was published in English, (2) was conducted in or in relation to a low or middle-income country, (3) reported on as least one type of social media or social media use generally for health purposes, and (4) reported on at least one aspect of human health. Content analysis was performed to identify themes.

Results

Forty articles met the inclusion criteria. Thirty-one were research articles, and nine were review/discussion/descriptive and evaluative reports. Since 2010, when the first article was published, most of the literature has focused on Asian (n = 15) and African (n = 12) countries. Twitter (n = 11) and Facebook (n = 10) were the most frequently discussed individual social media platforms. Four themes were identified: (1) use for health education and influence (sub-themes were health behaviour and health education); (2) use within infectious disease and outbreak situations; (3) use within natural disaster, terrorism, crisis and emergency response situations; and (4) producers and consumers of social media for health (sub-themes were misinformation, organizational challenges, users’ expectations, and challenges of unique sub-populations). Most studies addressed more than one theme.

Conclusion

Social media has the ability to facilitate disease surveillance, mass communication, health education, knowledge translation, and collaboration amongst health providers in low- and middle-income countries. Misinformation or poorly communicated information can contribute to negative health behaviours and adverse health outcomes amongst consumers, as well as hysteria and chaos. Organizations using social media should provide accurate and readable information. Promotion of credible social media sites by governments, health care professionals and researchers, as well as education on the appropriate use of social media, could help to lessen the effect of misinformation. This is a nascent body of literature and future research should investigate the relative effectiveness of various platforms for different users, other potential uses, and pursue a broader geographical focus.

Theme trends and knowledge structure on choroidal neovascularization: a quantitative and co-word analysis

Background

The distribution pattern and knowledge structure of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) was surveyed based on literatures in PubMed.

Methods

Published scientific papers about CNV were retrieved from Jan 1st, 2012 to May 31st, 2017. Extracted MeSH terms were analyzed quantitatively by using Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB) and high-frequency MeSH terms were identified. Hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted by SPSS 19.0 according to the MeSH term-source article matrix. High-frequency MeSH terms co-occurrence matrix was constructed to support strategic diagram and social network analysis (SNA).

Results

According to the searching strategy, all together 2366 papers were included, and the number of annual papers changed slightly from Jan 1st, 2012 to May 31st, 2017. Among all the extracted MeSH terms, 44 high-frequency MeSH terms were identified and hotspots were clustered into 6 categories. In the strategic diagram, clinical drug therapy, pathology and diagnosis related researches of CNV were well developed. In contrast, the metabolism, etiology, complications, prevention and control of CNV in animal models, and genetics related researches of CNV were relatively immature, which offers potential research space for future study. As for the SNA result, the position status of each component was described by the centrality values.

Conclusions

The studies on CNV are relatively divergent and the 6 research categories concluded from this study could reflect the publication trends on CNV to some extent. By providing a quantitative bibliometric research across a 5-year span, it could help to depict an overall command of the latest topics and provide some hints for researchers when launching new projects.
