Abstract
SummaryLarger mean platelet volume (MPV) has been associated with adverse health outcomes in high-risk populations or patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). We tested the association of MPV with mortality in a prospective cohort study including 17,402 subjects randomly recruited from an adult general population within the Moli-sani study (2005–2010). Two distinct subgroups (with or without CVD at baseline) were subsequently analysed. Hazard ratios (HR) were calculated using multivariable Cox-proportional hazard models. Over a median follow up of eight years (137,547 person-years), 925 all-cause deaths occurred (330 vascular, 351 cancer and 244 other deaths). In a multivariable model, the highest MPV quintile (mean MPV=10.0 fL), as compared to the lowest one, was associated with reduced risk of overall mortality (HR=0.79; 95 % confidence interval 0.64–0.98), cancer death (HR=0.70; 0.49–1.00) and death from other non- vascular/non cancer causes (HR=0.55; 0.36–0.84) but not with vascular mortality. The inverse association with overall death appeared even stronger in the subgroup without CVD at baseline (HR=0.64; 0.50–0.81). In contrast, within 920 subjects reporting a previous CVD event, larger MPV was associated with higher risk of total mortality (HR=1.69; 1.05–2.72; p for interaction=0.048) and with a trend of risk for other cause-specific deaths. In conclusion, larger MPV is associated with lower risk of overall and non-vascular death in subjects apparently free from CVD, but appears to be a predictive marker of death in patients with CVD history. The latter is a likely effect modifier of the association between MPV and death.

Abstract
Objectives TNM staging, especially for lymph node metastasis, is the scoring system most widely used among prognostic factors for cancer survival. Several biomarkers have been studied as serologic markers, but their specificity is low and clinical applications are difficult. This study aimed to establish a scoring system for patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) using platelet (PLT) and mean platelet volume (MPV) levels measured postoperatively and to evaluate their significance as prognostic factors. Materials and Methods We studied 40 patients admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Dankook University Hospital who were diagnosed with primary OSCC histopathologically between May 2006 and May 2012. Clinical pathological information obtained from the medical records of each patient included age, sex, height, weight, tumor location, degree of differentiation, tumor diameter, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage, and other test values including white blood cell, MPV, PLT, C-reactive protein (CRP), and albumin obtained through a test conducted within 7 days before surgery. Count of platelet (COP)-MPV Score: Patients with both PLT and MPV values below the cut-off values were defined as score 0 (group A). Patients with at least one of the two higher than the cut-off value were defined as score 1 (group B). Results Univariate analyses showed N-metastasis, COP-MPV (A vs B), PLT, platelet-lymphocyte ratio, and CRP were statistically significant prognostic factors. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards model showed N-metastasis (hazard ratio [HR] 6.227, P=0.016) and COP-MPV (A vs B) (HR 18.992, P=0.013) were independent prognostic factors with a significant effect on survival. Conclusion COP-MPV score is a simple and cost-effective test method and is considered a more effective prognostic factor than other considered factors in predicting the prognosis of OSCC patients.

Abstract
Background It is now widely acknowledged that chronic inflammation is closely associated with the process of cancer development. As a simple noninvasive blood-based test, hematological parameters in the routine blood test have been considered as inflammation markers. We aimed to evaluate platelet count (PC), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), white blood cell count (WBC), mean platelet volume (MPV), number of neutrophils/lymphocytes ratio (NLR), and platelet count/lymphocytes ratio (PLR) as surrogate inflammatory markers in breast cancer (BC) patients, and we compared these to those in healthy individuals. Material/Methods A retrospective study was conducted in Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from July 2014 to April 2015, including 110 cases of pathologically diagnosed BC patients and 78 cases of healthy females. Retrospective analysis of selected hematological parameters was performed between the 2 groups, as well as assessment of the correlation between these indexes and clinicopathological characteristics of the 110 breast cancer patients. Results The mean values of RDW, MPV, NLR, and PLR were significantly higher in BC patients compared to the control group. The level of MPV exhibited positive correlations with lymph node metastasis and the Ki67 proliferation index in preoperative BC patients (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis further showed that MPV was independently associated with the risk of BC lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). Conclusions Hematological parameters of RDW, MPV, NLR, and PLR can be used as an adjuvant tool for the diagnosis of BC. More importantly, the value of MPV can reflect the Ki67 proliferation index before surgery and identify patients with positive lymph node metastasis.

Abstract
Multiple cancers arise from sites of infection, chronic irritation, and inflammation. It has been widely accepted that pancreatic cancer is an inflammation-driven cancer. In this study, we investigated the application value of systemic inflammatory markers, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), in the prediction of chemotherapy response and prognosis in patients with late pancreatic cancer. 122 patients with inoperable pancreatic cancers were included and separated into two groups according to median values of NLR or PLR (NLR low:<3.81 or NLR high:≥3.81, and PLR low:<142.14 or PLR high≥142.14, respectively). Baseline NLR and PLR levels were significantly higher in pancreatic cancer patients compared with the healthy subjects. Neither of the baseline NLR or PLR levels could predict outcomes. Patients with low baseline level of NLR, but not PLR, had better responses to chemotherapy. Changes in NLR, but not PLR levels, were associated with the therapeutic efficacy. Patients who stayed in or dropped into the low NLR level subgroup after first-line chemotherapy had better responses, comparing to those stayed in or jumped into the high NLR level group. No similar results could be observed when the PLR level was investigated. Therefore, NLR is a more sensitive biomarker than PLR in the prediction of chemotherapy response of patients.

Abstract
Background Activated platelets promote tumor cell growth, aberrant angiogenesis, and invasion. However, the value of platelet indices for predicting survival in gastric cancer remains unknown. The goal of this study was to investigate the predictive significance of platelet indices in gastric cancer. Result Reduced platelet distribution width (PDW) was significantly correlated with age, carcinoembryonic antigen, tumor stage, nodule stage, and tumor-nodule-metastases stage. Moreover, decreased PDW correlated with a shorter overall survival in gastric cancer. Multivariate analysis identified PDW as an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (hazard ratio: 0.493, 95% confidence interval: 0.319-0.761, p = 0.001). Method A total of 294 patients with gastric cancer were retrospectively analyzed between January 2009 and December 2009. The association between platelet indices and overall survival were evaluated. The prognostic analysis was carried out with Cox regression model. Conclusion PDW is easily available with routine blood counts. Our data revealed that reduced PDW is unfavorable prognostic factor in gastric cancer. Further studies are warranted.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the prognostic value of the combination of preoperative platelet count (PLT) and mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with primary operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We retrospectively analysed data from 546 patients with NSCLC who underwent complete resection at our institution from 2006 to 2010. Patients’ clinical characteristics and laboratory test data at initial diagnosis were collected. Both preoperative PLT and MPV (COP-MPV) were calculated on the basis of the data obtained using the recommended cut-off values of 300 × 109 L−1 and 11.0 fL, respectively. Patients with both an elevated PLT (≥300× 109 L−1) and a decreased MPV (<11.0 fL) were assigned a score of 2, and patients showing one or neither were allocated a score of 1 or 0, respectively. Multivariate analysis of the 9 clinical laboratory variables selected by univariate analysis revealed that preoperative COP-MPV was a significantly independent prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) (hazard ratio, 1.775; 95% confidence interval, 1.500–2.101; P< 0.001) and disease-free survival (DFS) (hazard ratio, 1.719; 95% confidence interval, 1.454–2.033; P< 0.001). In subgroup analyses for tumour pathological stage (I/II/IIIA) patients, we found that the level of COP-MPV was significantly associated with OS and DFS in each subgroup (P< 0.001, P< 0.001, P<0.001 for OS and P<0.001, P< 0.001, P=0.001 for DFS, respectively). In conclusion, the preoperative COP-MPV is a promising predictor of postoperative survival in patients with NSCLC and could classify these patients into three independent groups before surgery.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer is the most rapidly increasing cancer type among women and the second among men. Early detection
greatly improves the prognosis. For this purpose, the platelet distribution width (PDW), an early indicator of platelet
activation, might be useful. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of PDW and serum albumin levels
individually or in combination to distinguish between thyroid cancer and benign thyroid nodules. A total of 265 patients
with thyroid cancer and 243 with benign thyroid nodules were included in a development set. Then, two groups of
130 cases were enrolled in a validation set. Patient characteristics and hematologic test data at initial diagnosis were
collected. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), area under the curve (AUC) values, sensitivity and specificity
were estimated. Albumin levels are significantly lower and PDW significantly higher in patients with thyroid cancer
compared to the benign cases. Moreover, PDW values prominently differed among three types of thyroid cancer. In
addition, the combination of PDW and albumin exhibited a significantly larger AUC than either marker alone (p < 0.001).
In conclusion, the combined use of PDW and albumin might be useful in distinguishing thyroid cancer from benign
thyroid nodules. This promising approach could be helpful in early detection of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Background: Cervical cancer is the most common gynecological malignant disorder worldwide. Activated platelets play a key role in cancer development and progression. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an early indicator of platelet activation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate MPV levels in patients with cervical cancer. Materials and methods: A total of 181 patients with cervical cancer and 181 controls between January 2015 and June 2015 were included in the study. Patient characteristics and hematologic test data at initial diagnosis were collected and odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk of cervical cancer were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analyses across MPV quartiles. Results: MPV levels were decreased in patients with cervical cancer compared with control subjects. A significant correlation between MPV and FIGO stage was found. Moreover, after adjusting for other risk factors, the ORs (95%CIs) for cervical cancer according to MPV quartiles were 4.450 (1.975-10.026), 2.505 (1.206-5.202), 0.573 (0.261-1.259), and 1.000, respectively. Conclusions: MPV was found to be independently associated with the presence of cervical cancer. Our results suggest that MPV could be potential diagnostic screening tool.

Fibrinogen contributed to angiogenesis and distant metastasis. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of CA15-3, PDW, and fibrinogen individually or in combination, to distinguish breast cancer from benign breast disease. 200 consecutive patients with breast cancer and 187 patients with benign breast disease were included in this retrospective study. Patients’ characteristics and hematologic tests data at initial diagnosis were collected. The benefit of adding PDW and fibrinogen to a model with only CA15-3 was evaluated as an increased in the area under the curve (AUC) obtained by receiver operating curve (ROC). CA15-3, PDW and fibrinogen are higher in breast cancer patients than in patients with benign breast disease. Single biomarkers had AUC values ranging from 0.687 for fibrinogen to 0.810 for CA15-3. In addition, the combination of PDW, CA15-3, and fibrinogen increased the AUC to 0.900 (0.866-0.928) (p<0.0001), significantly higher than those of any single marker. In conclusion, the combined use of CA15-3, PDW and fibrinogen may be clinically useful in discriminating between breast cancer and benign breast disease in non-conclusive mammography patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the third most common genitourinary cancer. Activated platelets play a pivotal role in cancer development and progression. Altered mean platelet volume (MPV) has been reported in several malignancies. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of MPV with RCC. STUDY DESIGN The study consisted of 145 patients with RCC, 110 patients with benign renal tumor and 132 healthy control subjects between January 2015 and December 2015. All participants' clinical and laboratory characteristics at initial diagnosis were collected. The odds ratios (ORs) for RCC were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusting for confounding variables across MPV quartiles. RESULTS The patients with RCC had decreased pre-operative MPV compared to the patients with benign renal tumor and healthy control subjects. Furthermore, pre-operative MPV was reduced in benign renal tumor compared with healthy control subjects. Surgical tumor resection resulted in a significant increase in MPV levels (8.7 fL vs. 9.0 fL; p = 0.011). After adjusting for other risk factors, the ORs (95% CIs) for RCC in each MPV quartile were 25.725 (7.556-87.585), 7.447 (2.701-20.537), 0.703 (0.245-2.019), and 1.000, respectively. CONCLUSIONS RCC patients have remarkably reduced MPV compared to patients with benign renal tumor and healthy control subjects. Moreover, decreased MPV was independently associated with RCC. Our results suggest that detection of MPV may be useful to assess the risk of RCC.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between platelet indices [mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet count (PLT), platelet distribution width (PDW) and plateletcrit (PCT)] at diagnosis in osteosarcoma. Methods The information of 233 patients with osteosarcoma at diagnosis between 2007 and 2015 was retrospectively reviewed. Clinical parameters such as gender, age, size and site of tumor, and tumor necrosis rate after neoadjuvant chemotherapy were analyzed. Results No significant difference was noted in the mean values of MPV, PLT, PDW and PCT among stage I, II and III patients. In localized patients, the median disease-free survival (DFS) values were 42 and 22 months in the PLT<300×109/L and ≥300×109/L groups, respectively, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.2611). No difference in the DFS among the three different levels of MPV was observed. Conclusion No significantly different platelet indices were noted among the different stages. Although a shorter median DFS was found in localized patients with PLT≥300×109/L, there was still a lack of strong evidence to demonstrate the association between platelet indices and osteosarcoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rectal cancer is a major cause of death and an early diagnosis is crucial in decreasing mortality. Previous studies found a relation between chronic inflammation and increased risk of rectal cancer. It was shown that mean platelet volume (MPV) level might be a marker of subclinical inflammatory process in gastrointestinal tract. OBJECTIVE To determinate whether MPV could be a useful biomarker of tumor progression in the rectal cancer. METHODS One hundred and three patients with rectal cancer who underwent surgical resection of tumor were enrolled in the study. The control group consisted of 98 healthy subjects. RESULTS The association between MPV, tumor stage and clinical status were assessed. The analysis proved that pre-operative MPV level was significantly lower in rectal cancer vs. healthy individuals (10.65 ± 0.79 vs. 11.41 ± 0.76 fL; p < 0.001).Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis suggested 11.3 as the cut-off value for MPV (sensitivity = 83%; specificity = 54%; AUC = 0.745). Surgical resection of tumor resulted in the increase of the MPV level with statistical significance (10.65 ± 0.79 fL vs. 11.21 ± 0.82 fL; p < 0.001). No relationship was found between the post-operative MPV level in cancer patients and control subjects. CONLUSION MPV level may be potentially useful and easily available biomarker for monitoring subclinical inflammation related to rectal cancer and predicting tumor progression.

Abstract
Activated platelets are involved in cancer development and progression. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are early indexes of platelet activation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the ability of MPV, PDW and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) individually or in combination, to distinguish between gastric cancer and gastric ulcer. The study involved 194 patients with gastric cancer, 191 patients with gastric ulcer, and 185 control subjects. Subjects’ characteristics and hematologic tests data at initial diagnosis were collected. We found that MPV levels are significantly increased and PDW levels are significantly reduced in patients with gastric ulcer and in control subjects compared with those in gastric cancer. When the area under the curve (AUC) was used to analyze control subjects versus gastric cancer, the combination of PDW and CEA exhibited a significantly larger AUC of 0.939 (0.910-0.961) compared with the combination of MPV and CEA (p = 0.0045). When AUC was used to analyze gastric ulcer versus gastric cancer, PDW alone had the high specificity (98.5%) and high sensitivity (97.4%). In conclusion, combined use of MPV, PDW and CEA can accurately distinguish gastric cancer from gastric ulcer and controls. Further studies in larger samples are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory hematological parameters like the neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio have been investigated in many cancer types and significant relationships found with prognosis, for example. The aim of this present study was to investigate the impact of hematological parameters notably on N/L ratio and mean platelet volume (MPV) in papillary thyroid cancer cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 79 patients who underwent a thyroidectomy operation in Findikli, Goiter Research and Treatment Center during 2011- 2015 period were enrolled in the study, 41 with papillary thyroid cancer and 38 with benign goiter confirmed by pathological examination. We collected clinical and laboratory data for the patients from hospital records retrospectively. Blood samples taken at admission were assessed for parameters compared between the groups. RESULTS No significant differences between papillary thyroid cancer and benign goiter groups were apparent in terms of age, the N/L ratio, MPV, white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet, neutrophil, lymphocyte, red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and platelet crit (PCT) levels (>0.05). Only the level of platelet distribution width (PDW) significantly differed, being lower in the papillary cancer group (<0.05). CONCLUSIONS No significant relationship between papillary thyroid cancer and inflammatory hematological parameters including in particular the N/L ratio and MPV. The relevance of the PDW values remains unclear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we aimed to determine platelet indices such as platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), Plateletcrit (PCT) platelet count (PLT) in lung cancer cases, and evaluate any relationships between these parameters and stage or histologic types. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study covered 44 lung cancer patients and 47 healthy subjects. Platelet indices including PLT, PCT, MPV, PDW were estimated and compared with normal subjects. The results were evaluated statistically. RESULTS The PDW value was significantly higher in the cancer group compared to the control group; however, the values for PCT and MPV were lower. CONCLUSIONS We suggest potential use of platelet indices in diagnosis of lung cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic myeloproliferative diseases are clonal stem cell diseases which occur as a result of uncontrollable growth and reproduction of hematopoietic stem cells, which are the myeloid series source in bone marrow. Recent studies have suggested that chronic inflammation can be a triggering factor in the clonal change in chronic myeloproliferative neoplasia (CMPN). In our study, we evaluated the existence of a chronic inflammation process in our Philadelphia negative (Ph-)CMPN patients using inflammation parameters in combination with demographic, laboratory and clinical characteristics of the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Demographic characteristics, clinical and laboratorial data, and thrombosis histories of 99 Ph-CMPN patients, who were diagnosed at our outpatient clinic of hematology in accordance with WHO 2008 criteria, were analyzed retrospectively,with 80 healthy individuals of matching gender and age included as controls. Complete blood counts, sedimentation, C reactive protein (CRP), JAK V617F gene mutations, abdomen ultrasound images and previous thrombosis histories of these patients were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Ph-CMPN and healthy control groups included 99 and 80 cases, respectively. PV, ET and MF diagnoses of patients were 43 (%43.4), 44 (44.4%) and 12 (12.1%), respectively. JAK V617F gene mutation was found to be positive in 64 (71.1%) of all cases and in 27(65.8%), 32 (82%), 5 (50%) of the cases in PV, ET and PMF groups, respectively. Thrombosis was determined as 12 (12%) in the entire group, 12.5% in the JAK V617F negative and 15.3% in the positive patients, with no statistical significance (p=0.758). No significant difference was observed between patients with and without previous thrombosis history in respect to hemogram parameters, sedimentation and CRP (p>0.05), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), erythrocyte distribution width (RDW), mean platelet volume (MPV) and sedimentation levels of the patient.

Abstract
Bleeding complications are frequent and independently predict mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). It has been demonstrated that certain platelet parameters are indicative of platelet reactivity. We sought to determine the possible correlation between simple platelet indices and bleeding complications in patients undergoing TAVI. Platelet indices--platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width and plateletcrit--were measured in 110 consecutive patients on the day preceding TAVI. In-hospital bleeding events after TAVI were assessed according to the Valve Academic Research Consortium-2 classification as any bleeding, major and life-threatening bleeding (MLTB) and need for transfusion. By receiver-operating characteristic analysis, only MPV was able to distinguish between patients with and without any bleeding [area under the curve (AUC) 0.629, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.531-0.719, P = 0.0342], MLTB (AUC 0.730, 95% CI 0.637-0.811, P = 0.0004) and need for transfusion (AUC 0.660, 95% CI 0.563-0.747, P = 0.0045). By multivariate logistic regression, high MPV (>10.6) and low platelet distribution width (<14.8) were associated with increased risk of any bleeding [odds ratio (OR) 4.08, 95% CI 1.66-10.07, P = 0.0022; and OR 3.82, 95% CI 1.41-10.36, P = 0.0084, respectively] and MLTB (OR 10.76, 95% CI 3.05-38, P = 0.0002; and OR 8.46, 95% CI 1.69-42.17, P = 0.0092, respectively). Additionally, high MPV independently correlated with the need for transfusion (OR 4.11, 95% CI 1.71-9.86, P = 0.0016). Larger and less heterogenic platelets may be associated with increased risk of short-term bleeding complications after TAVI.

Abstract
AIMS Hemogram parameters in routine blood panels have been proposed as inflammation markers. These parameters, especially the red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV), were evaluated as surrogate inflammatory markers in brain tumor patients. We aimed to observe RDW and MPV values of tumor patients and compare to those in healthy population. METHODS We recorded white blood cell count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, RDW, platelet count, and MPV of the study group at the time of diagnosis and compared to those of the control subjects. RESULTS The RDW was significantly elevated in study group compared to that of the control subjects (p=0.001). The MPV was significantly lower in study group than that of the control group (p=0.01). CONCLUSION Decreased MPV and increased RDW were both associated with brain tumor. However, prospective studies with larger sample sizes are needed to support the results and expose MPV and RDW variations between metastatic and primary brain tumors.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to search the most powerful prognostic factor from routine blood test for esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) patients. Multiple laboratory tests were evaluated including those reflecting red blood cell parameters (hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and red blood cell distribution width (RDW)), platelet morphological parameters (mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet count (PLT)), blood coagulation status (D-dimer), and tumor biomarker (CA19-9). Known inflammatory indices (NLR and PLR) were also calculated. A total of 468 patients who were diagnosed with ESCC between December 2005 and December 2008 were retrospectively analyzed in this study. By utilizing univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses, we found that PLT and MPV were significantly associated with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of ESCC patients, with optimal cutoff values of 212 and 10.6, respectively. Moreover, the combination of the preoperative PLT and MPV (COP-MPV) was calculated as follows: patients with both PLT (≥212 × 10(9) L(-1)) and MPV (≥10.6 fL) elevation were assigned a score of 2, and patients with one or neither were assigned a score of 1 and 0. The COP-MPV was an independent prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio (HR) 0.378, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.241 to 0.593, P < 0.001, 0/2) and DFS (HR 0.341, 95 % CI 0.218 to 0.534, P < 0.001, 0/2) in multivariate analyses. In subgroup analyses for early (stages I and II) and locally (stage III) advanced stage patients, COP-MPV was found significantly associated with OS and DFS in each group (P = 0.025 and P = 0.018 for OS and P = 0.029 and P = 0.002 for DFS). In conclusion, we considered that COP-MPV is a promising predictor for postoperative survival in ESCC patients.

Abstract
Nutritional status has been associated with long-term outcomes in cancer patients. The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is calculated by serum albumin concentration and absolute lymphocyte count, and it may be a surrogate biomarker for nutritional status and possibly predicts overall survival (OS) of gastric cancer. We evaluated the value of the PNI as a predictor for disease-free survival (DFS) in addition to OS in a cohort of 314 gastric cancer patients who underwent curative surgical resection. There were 77 patients in PNI-low group (PNI ≤ 47.3) and 237 patients in PNI-high group (PNI > 47.3). With a median follow-up of 36.5 mo, 5-yr DFS rates in PNI-low group and PNI-high group were 63.5% and 83.6% and 5-yr OS rates in PNI-low group and PNI-high group were 63.5% and 88.4%, respectively (DFS, P < 0.0001; OS, P < 0.0001). In the multivariate analysis, the only predictors for DFS were PNI, tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage, and perineural invasion, whereas the only predictors for OS were PNI, age, TNM stage, and perineural invasion. In addition, the PNI was independent of various inflammatory markers. In conclusion, the PNI is an independent prognostic factor for both DFS and OS, and provides additional prognostic information beyond pathologic parameters.

Abstract
Gastric cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer and the second cause of cancer-related mortalities worldwide. Platelets play an important and multifaceted role in cancer progression. Elevated mean platelet volume (MPV) detected in peripheral blood has been identified in various types of cancer. In the present study, we investigated the application value of MPV in the prediction of chemotherapy response and prognosis in patients with unresectable gastric cancer. A total of 128 patients with unresectable gastric cancer were included and divided according to the median values of baseline MPV (low MPV: <11.65 or high MPV: ≥11.65). A low baseline MPV level was correlated with reduced metastasis. The results showed that patients with a low baseline level of MPV improved response to chemotherapy. Changes in MPV were associated with therapeutic efficacy. Patients who remained in or were transferred into the low MPV level subgroup following first-line chemotherapy had improved response, compared to those remaining in or being transferred into the high MPV level group. The patients with a higher baseline MPV had decreased progression-free and overall survival ratios. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that baseline MPV was a prognostic factor affecting progression-free survival. In conclusion, the results showed that MPV measurements can provide important prognostic information for gastric cancer patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation of the serum neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV), with the standardized uptake value (SUVmax), and metabolic tumor volume (MTV) in F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patient with esophageal squamous cell cancer at baseline. METHODS PET/CTs were performed in 52 patients with esophageal squamous cell cancer, making up the patient group. An additional 52 patients who underwent endoscopy due to dyspepsia with normal esophagus (as a control group) were included in the study to compare the hematological parameters between the patient groups. RESULTS The median age was 60.0 ± 12.8 years (range 39-84 years) for the patients with esophageal cancer, and 56.9 ± 12.3 years for the control group. Statistical differences were found in terms of the neutrophils, lymphocytes, NLR, PLT, PLR, and MPV between the patients with esophageal cancer and the control group. In the correlation analysis, only the NLR was correlated with the MTV for all of the patients (p = 0.013, r = 0.344). The SUVmax was not correlated with these hematological parameters. CONCLUSION At baseline neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is associated with the metabolic tumor volume, which was assessed using the PET/CT in patients with esophageal squamous cell cancer. The SUVmax values were not related to these parameters.

Abstract
AIM: To measure the prognostic significance of absolute monocyte count/absolute lymphocyte count prognostic score (AMLPS) in patients with gastric cancer.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined the combination of absolute monocyte count (AMC) and absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) as prognostic variables in a cohort of 299 gastric cancer patients who underwent surgical resection between 2006 and 2013 and were followed at a single institution. Both AMC and ALC were dichotomized into two groups using cut-off points determined by receiving operator characteristic curve analysis. An AMLPS was generated, which stratified patients into three risk groups: low risk (both low AMC and high ALC), intermediate risk (either high AMC or low ALC), and high risk (both high AMC and low ALC). The primary objective of the study was to validate the impact of AMLPS on both disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), and the second objective was to assess the AMLPS as an independent prognostic factor for survival in comparison with known prognostic factors.
RESULTS: Using data from the entire cohort, the most discriminative cut-off values of AMC and ALC selected on the receiver operating characteristic curve were 672.4/μL and 1734/μL for DFS and OS. AMLPS risk groups included 158 (52.8%) patients in the low-risk, 128 (42.8%) in the intermediate-risk, and 13 (4.3%) in the high-risk group. With a median follow-up of 37.2 mo (range: 1.7-91.4 mo), five-year DFS rates in the low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups were 83.4%, 78.7%, and 19.8%, respectively. And five-year OS rates in the low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups were 89.3%, 81.1%, and 14.4%, respectively. On multivariate analysis performed with patient- and tumor-related factors, we identified AMLPS, age, and pathologic tumor-node-metastasis stage as the most valuable prognostic factors impacting DFS and OS.
CONCLUSION: AMLPS identified patients with a poor DFS and OS, and it was independent of age, pathologic stage, and various inflammatory markers.

Abstract
There is evidence that inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) combine both inflammation and coagulation in their pathogenesis and clinical manifestations. Although platelets (PLT) are well known for their role in hemostasis, there are a rising number of studies supporting their considerable role as inflammatory amplifiers in chronic inflammatory conditions. IBD are associated with several alterations of PLT, including number, shape, and function, and these abnormalities are mainly attributed to the highly activated state of circulating PLT in IBD patients. When PLT activate, they increase in size, release a great variety of bio-active inflammatory and procoagulant molecules/particles, and express a variety of inflammatory receptors. These inflammatory products may represent a part of the missing link between coagulation and inflammation, and can be considered as possible IBD pathogenesis instigators. In clinical practice, thrombocytosis is associated both with disease activity and iron deficiency anemia. Controlling inflammation and iron replacement in anemic patients usually leads to a normalization of PLT count. The aim of this review is to update the role of PLT in IBD and present recent data revealing the possible therapeutic implications of anti-PLT agents in future IBD remedies.
