Abstract
Background: The transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1) has acted on the causation and sustentation of mature B-cell lymphomagenesis for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells. The study attempted to show whether there is a relationship between the level of ROR1 surface expression in CLL cells and disease findings. Materials and Methods: The level of ROR1 cell surface expression was determined in accordance with the flow cytometric analysis of CLL patients at the first diagnosis time. Two groups were formed according to the high and low ROR1 levels. The cut-off point for the ROR1 level was calculated for advanced-stage disease using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. A two-sided p-value <0,05 was considered statistically significant. Results: 108 CLL cases with a median age of 60 were enrolled. The median percentage of ROR1 cell surface marker positivity in the CD5/CD19 positive leukemic cell was 62%. The CLL cases with high ROR1 levels have thrombocytopenia (p=0.042), anemia (p=0.028), and high beta-2 microglobulin value ≥3 mg/dL (p=0.002) and the need for first-line treatment (p=0.043). Conclusion: The poor prognostic parameters such as splenomegaly, anemia, higher beta-2 microglobulin levels, intermediate/advanced RAİ stage disease, and need for first-line treatment had associated high-level ROR 1 expression of our CLL patients. It needs to be investigated for its effect on predicting disease burden and aggressiveness with more comprehensive studies on ROR1 expression levels in CLL cases.

Abstract
Background: Complete response (CR) and very good partial response (VGPR) are targeted with pre-ASCT induction regimens in patients by diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM), who are candidates for ASCT. In this study, it was aimed to compare the response and survival evaluations of cases who underwent induction treatment by vincristine-doxorubicin-dexamethasone (VAD) protocol versus bortezomib containing regimens. Materials and Methods: The data of 96 ASCT eligible patients, retrospectively analyzed. P value> 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: While 66 cases had received bortezomib containing regimens as induction regimen, 30 cases had received VAD protocol. The total survival was 91.3 (st.s 6) months and 43 (st.s 7.9) months, respectively, when we compared the cases without ASCT and with ASCT (p = 0.001). The OS of patients who underwent ASCT after reaching at least VGPR was longer than the underwent ASCT without reaching VGPR (p=0.019). Post-ASCT PFS (p=0.717) and OS (p = 0.126) analyzes were performed in 74 cases undergoing ASCT treatment, there was no significant statistical difference when patients with treated by VAD protochol and treated by bortezomib containing regimens as pre-ASCT induction regimens was compared to each other. Conclusion: Whatever the type of induction regimen is, the level of response achieved before ASCT is important. The survival of the myeloma patients are much more influenced with HDT-ASCT as well as post-transplantation strategies to keep the patients in remission. Even though it is outdated, we think that the VAD protocol may be an option in patients who are not responding with the new generation of agents in the following days.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) include various hematologic abnormalities characterized by chronic cytopenia due to disruption in cellular differentiation. This study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of PLR in patients with MDS. MATERIAL AND METHODS Clinical-laboratory findings and the results of bone marrow biopsies of MDS patients before treatment were recorded. p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. SPSS version 20.0 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The study included 62 patients with median follow-up time of 62.8±4.5 months and median age of 68.5 years. In 13 patients, acute leukemia was transformed. In these subjects, a PLR cut-off level of 46 was established for mortality (p=0.015). We found a significant relationship between PLR and multilineage series with the presence of dysplasia (p=0.017). The survival analysis showed a decreased survival in cases with dysplasia in two and/or more series, transformation into acute leukemia, and thrombocytopenia. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that there was a relationship between PLR and MDS with multilineage dysplasia (mld-MDS). PLR is investigated as an inflammatory finding in various hematologic malignancies. Further studies investigating the value of PLR in MDS are needed to determine whether PLR may be a marker of bone marrow dysplasia grading (Tab. 2, Fig. 4, Ref. 32).

Abstract
Introduction Vitamin D, which is known for its effects on calcium and bone metabolism, has recently been associated with haematological malignancies. We aimed to investigate the relationship between disease findings and vitamin D deficiency in essential thrombocythemia (ET) and polycythemia vera (PV). Material and Methods This retrospective cohort study conducted in Turkey included 73 patients diagnosed with PV or ET according to WHO criteria between 2012 and 2018. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25-OH vitamin D < 20 ng/mL. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) V617F mutation. Results Vitamin D deficiency was found in 66.7% of PV and 74.2% of ET patients. The median follow-up time of ET and PV patients was 48 months and 47 months, respectively. Patients with the JAK2 mutation had a higher prevalence of a history of thrombosis and age older than 65 years. There was a significant relationship between JAK2 positivity and vitamin D deficiency. Conclusion There was a remarkably higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in JAK2 mutation-positive ET and PV patients. These patients should be carefully evaluated for vitamin D deficiency. More studies are required to further investigate the association between JAK2 and vitamin D.

Abstract
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a common hematological malignancy. This study is aimed to investigate the prognostic effect of clinic, laboratory and flow cytometric analysis in CLL patients. Newly diagnosed 55 CLL cases were divided into two groups, as stable disease (Group 1) and progressive disease (Group 2). Group 1 included those who did not require any treatment since diagnosis and those who did not progress after receiving the first step anti CLL treatment. Group 2 included the patients who received ≥ 2 steps treatment. The relation between the two groups was analyzed statistically in terms of clinical, laboratory and flow cytometric findings. Twenty patients (36.3%) required treatment at the time of diagnosis, four patients (3.8%) received first-line treatment during follow-up and 31 (56.3%) patients were followed without any treatment. Thirteen patients required second step treatment after a median of 26.3 months. The risk of progression was found to be increased 5-fold (p = 0.015) in the CD38 positive patient group, 4.2-fold (p = 0.0147) in the FMC7 negative patient group and 2.8-fold in the CD11c negative patient group. FMC 7 negativity decreased total survival 5.9-fold (p = 0.051). Unlike similar publications, we found that patients with CD11c or FMC7 negativity were in a higher need for ≥ 2 step treatment. This suggests that CD11c or FMC7 negativity may be used as a poor prognostic marker in CLL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The programmed death receptor (PD-1) and ligand (PD-L1) pathway act by suppressing the antitumor response in chronic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL). In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of PD-1, PD-L1, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positivity on prognosis at the initial diagnosis of cHL. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-six patients with cHL were retrospectively analyzed. PD-L1 staining was performed for RS cells and tumor microenvironment in the biopsy materials of cases. The presence of EBV was investigated by EBER (EBV-encoded RNA) method in tumor cell. P < .05 was accepted as significant. RESULTS The presence of advanced-stage disease, B symptoms, intermediate or high-risk international prognostic index (IPS), and extranodal involvement were found to be related to both PD-L1 positivity and EBV positivity in RS cells. PD-L1 positivity in RS cells was also associated with EBV positivity. There were 6 (16.7%) triple-positive (EBV+, RS-PD-L1+, mic-PD-1+) patients. All of these patients had advanced-stage disease, B symptoms at the time of diagnosis, and intermediate-high IPS score, and 4 of 6 patients had extranodal involvement. This group also had significantly shortened overall survival compared with others (38.4 months vs. 67.9 months P = .024). CONCLUSION Our data suggest that there is correlation between PD-L1 positivity and EBV positivity in tumor RS cells that are also associated with extranodal involvement, intermediate and high IPS score, presence of B symptoms, and advanced-stage disease. In addition, we identified a group of triple-positive (EBV+, RS-PD-L1+, mic-PD-1+) cHL patients who have a very high-risk disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a highly mortal disease in which anemia is unresponsive to treatment. In this study, the effect of basal ferritin values on prognosis and survival was investigated in MDS patients without history of transfusion. METHODS Data were retrospectively analyzed for 62 MDS cases. The cases were divided into two groups according to ferritin values. RESULTS The mean survival time was 61.1±4.8 months. During the follow-up period, 34 (54.8%) patients deceased. Median ferritin level was 358ng/mL. The serum ferritin (SF) level associated with mortality was determined as 400ng/mL (ROC area for SF was 0.731 with a cutoff value of 400; sensitivity and specificity were 70.7% and 68.2%, respectively) (P=0.002). There were 29 (46.8%) patients with serum ferritin levels of ≥400ng/mL. Patients with serum ferritin levels≥400ng/mL had low survival rates. Ferritin≥400ng/mL was associated with six times increased mortality (P=0.001). CONCLUSION Although the acceptable ferritin level at the start of chelation therapy is 1000ng/mL, the fact that 400ng/mL value is associated with survival in our study suggests that it may be useful to start chelation therapy in the early period. Further case studies on the subject are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we aimed to investigate the iron absorption defects using the oral iron absorption test (OIAT) in patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-six patients with IDA which nonresponder to oral iron treatment were included in the study. OIAT was started at 8 a.m. after an overnight fast; 52.8 mg of elemental iron were given orally as 160 mg of iron sulfate. Iron levels of all participants were analyzed at baseline and at the 3rd hour of the study. RESULTS Compared to baseline; serum iron levels whose serum iron levels exceed 91 mcg/ dl in 40(%87) patients. Further investigations in 6 patients revealed that 4 patients had chronic atrophic gastritis with helicobacter pylori infection; while the remaining 2 patients did not have any prominent. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that OIAT is a good index for the evaluation of absorption defects and can be a screening clinical test of IDA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The etiology of multiple myeloma (MM) is not exactly known. This study investigated the role of thiol/disulfide homeostasis in the etiopathogenesis of MM. METHODS Some 50 patients with MM (aged 39-84 years) and 50 sex-matched healthy volunteer controls (aged 50-91 years) participated in this study. Venous blood samples were collected, and levels of native thiols, total thiols, and disulfide were measured. RESULTS Native and total thiol levels in the control group were determined to be higher than in the study and patient groups (P<0.001). Disulfide levels were found to be higher in the control group than in the study group and higher in newly diagnosed patients than in outpatients who were undergoing treatment (P=0.002). The ratios of thiol levels were found to be similar in both the study and control groups (P>0.05). DISCUSSION The results of the study show that although there was a decrease in the levels of disulfide, native thiol, and total thiol, the balance of thiol/disulfide was maintained. This is the first study to research the homeostasis of dynamic thiol/disulfide from the perspective of the new method that was used. We hope that this study will encourage and facilitate further studies in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic myeloproliferative diseases are clonal stem cell diseases which occur as a result of uncontrollable growth and reproduction of hematopoietic stem cells, which are the myeloid series source in bone marrow. Recent studies have suggested that chronic inflammation can be a triggering factor in the clonal change in chronic myeloproliferative neoplasia (CMPN). In our study, we evaluated the existence of a chronic inflammation process in our Philadelphia negative (Ph-)CMPN patients using inflammation parameters in combination with demographic, laboratory and clinical characteristics of the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Demographic characteristics, clinical and laboratorial data, and thrombosis histories of 99 Ph-CMPN patients, who were diagnosed at our outpatient clinic of hematology in accordance with WHO 2008 criteria, were analyzed retrospectively, with 80 healthy individuals of matching gender and age included as controls. Complete blood counts, sedimentation, C reactive protein (CRP), JAK V617F gene mutations, abdomen ultrasound images and previous thrombosis histories of these patients were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Ph-CMPN and healthy control groups included 99 and 80 cases, respectively. PV, ET and MF diagnoses of patients were 43 (%43.4), 44 (44.4%) and 12 (12.1%), respectively. JAK V617F gene mutation was found to be positive in 64 (71.1%) of all cases and in 27(65.8%), 32 (82%), 5 (50%) of the cases in PV, ET and PMF groups, respectively. Thrombosis was determined as 12 (12%) in the entire group, 12.5% in the JAK V617F negative and 15.3% in the positive patients, with no statistical significance (p=0.758). No significant difference was observed between patients with and without previous thrombosis history in respect to hemogram parameters, sedimentation and CRP (p>0.05), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), erythrocyte distribution width (RDW), mean platelet volume (MPV) and sedimentation levels of the patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate paraoxonase (PON) and arylesterase (ARES) enzyme activity in adults with vitamin B12 deficiency, and specific changes in the activities of these enzymes following vitamin B12 treatment. METHODS A total of 46 patients with vitamin B12 deficiency (aged 18-82 years) and 45 healthy volunteer controls (aged 19-64 years) participated in this study. Venous blood samples were collected, and serum vitamin B12, homocysteine (HCY), methylmalonic acid, PON1, and ARES levels were measured. RESULTS Paired comparison showed that pre- and post-treatment values for PON and ARES were similar between patients and controls (both P > 0.05). There was no statistically significant relationship between patients' pre-/post-treatment PON or HCY levels and serum vitamin B12 levels, compared with those of the control group (P > 0.05). DISCUSSION The results of the present study do not support the hypothesis that the antioxidant enzymes PON and ARES have an underlying role in vitamin B12 deficiency and related hyperhomocysteinemia. Our findings suggest that PON and ARES do not play a role in the systemic effects of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The aim of this study was to examine the theory that oxidative stress might have an important mediating effect on the deleterious results of vitamin B12 metabolism deficiency seen throughout the body. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients with vitamin B12 deficiency and 40 healthy controls were included in the study. Venous blood samples were collected from all participants to evaluate serum vitamin B12, homocysteine, methylmalonic acid, total antioxidant status (TAS), and total oxidant status (TOS) levels in the pre- and posttreatment periods. RESULTS There were no significant differences in TAS, TOS, or oxidative stress index (OSI) levels between the pretreatment patient and control groups, and there were no significant differences in TAS or TOS levels between the posttreatment and control groups. In addition, there were no significant differences between the pre- and posttreatment TAS, TOS, and OSI levels of the patients. CONCLUSION These findings are remarkable in that cyanocobalamin treatment had no direct effect on oxidant and antioxidant status in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency. The fact that there were no differences in oxidant and antioxidant status between the patients and the controls might suggest that oxidative stress does not play a role in the systemic negative effects of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medication errors in oncology may cause severe clinical problems due to low therapeutic indices and high toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. We aimed to investigate unintentional medication errors and underlying factors during chemotherapy preparation and administration based on a systematic survey conducted to reflect oncology nurses experience. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted in 18 adult chemotherapy units with volunteer participation of 206 nurses. A survey developed by primary investigators and medication errors (MAEs) defined preventable errors during prescription of medication, ordering, preparation or administration. The survey consisted of 4 parts: demographic features of nurses; workload of chemotherapy units; errors and their estimated monthly number during chemotherapy preparation and administration; and evaluation of the possible factors responsible from ME. The survey was conducted by face to face interview and data analyses were performed with descriptive statistics. Chi-square or Fisher exact tests were used for a comparative analysis of categorical data. RESULTS Some 83.4% of the 210 nurses reported one or more than one error during chemotherapy preparation and administration. Prescribing or ordering wrong doses by physicians (65.7%) and noncompliance with administration sequences during chemotherapy administration (50.5%) were the most common errors. The most common estimated average monthly error was not following the administration sequence of the chemotherapeutic agents (4.1 times/month, range 1-20). The most important underlying reasons for medication errors were heavy workload (49.7%) and insufficient number of staff (36.5%). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the probability of medication error is very high during chemotherapy preparation and administration, the most common involving prescribing and ordering errors. Further studies must address the strategies to minimize medication error in chemotherapy receiving patients, determine sufficient protective measures and establishing multistep control mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many older women are hesitated to initiate discussions about urinary symptoms and their incontinence. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of occult urinary incontinence in outpatient older women and to evaluate its association with other geriatric conditions. PATIENTS AND METHODS 100 female patients 65 years and older were assessed at the geriatric outpatient clinic. The validated form of the Turkish version of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form was used to evaluate urinary incontinence and quality of life. Comprehensive geriatric assessment including activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, mini mental state examination and geriatrics depression scale was performed. The number of falls, comorbid conditions and number of medications were noted. The association between urinary incontinence and geriatric domains were evaluated with logistic regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 100 patients were evaluated, 64 of them included in the study. The median age of patients was 72.5. The rate of urinary incontinence was found 40.6%. The association between urinary incontinence and quality of life, performance status and comorbidity was found statistically significant with logistic regression (p = 0.033, p = 0.005, p = 0.031 respectively). Half of the patients with UI believe that it is part of normal aging and no definite treatment is available. CONCLUSIONS Occult urinary incontinence is a significant problem in older women that inversely affecting the quality of life. The study suggests that awareness and education regarding incontinence should be increased among elderly patients and screening of urinary incontinence is an important part of the geriatric assessment. The evaluation and management of functional status and comorbid conditions should be the initial step during incontinence management in elderly patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of sex-based non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) varieties on survival rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study was performed in patients with NSCLC who were diagnosed by histological methods between the years 2000 and 2010. A chi-square test was used to compare variables. Overall survival (OS) was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS Of the 844 patients, 117 (13.9%) were women and 727 (86.1%) were men. Adenocarcinoma was more common in women than in men (p<0.0001). There were more women non-smokers than men (p<0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference in ECOG PS, weight loss>10%, stage, LDH, albumin and treatment between women and men. Women younger than 65 years (17.0 vs 12.0 months; p=0.03), who had adenocarcinoma histology (15.0 vs 10.0 months; p=0.006) and who had a hemoglobin level≥12 g/dL (18.0 vs 12.0 months; p=0.01) were found to have a better median OS rate than men. Median OS rates were found to be 13.0 months in females and 12.0 months in males (p=0.14). Among metastatic patients, the median OS was 11.0 months in females and 8.0 months in males (p=0.005). Among stage IIIB and stage IV patients who had first line platinum-based chemotherapy, the median OS was 17.0 months in women and 11.0 months in men (p=0.002). The response rate of chemotherapy was higher in women than in men (p=0.03). CONCLUSIONS In our study, we found that survival duration is longer and chemotherapy response is better in women with NSCLC who do not have anemia or comorbidities and who are mostly non-smokers with adenocarcinomas. Further studies regarding the causes of these differences may provide clarity on this subject.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Utilizing geriatric screening tools for the identification of vulnerable older patients with cancer is important. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hospitalization risk of elderly hematologic cancer patients based on geriatric assessment and laboratory parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this cross sectional study 61 patients with hematologic malignancies, age 65 years and older, were assessed at a hematology outpatient clinic. Standard geriatric screening tests; activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), timed up and go test (TUG), geriatrics depression scale (GDS) were administered. Demographic and medical data were obtained from patient medical records. The number of hospitalizations in the following six months was then recorded to allow analysis of associations with geriatric assessment tools and laboratory parameters. RESULTS The median age of the patients, 37 being males, was 66 years. Positive TUG test and declined ADL was found as significant risk factors for hospitalization (p=0.028 and p=0.015 respectively). Correlations of hospitalization with thrombocytopenia, vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency were statistically significant (p=0.004, p=0.011 and p=0.05 respectively). CONCLUSIONS In this study, geriatric conditions which are usually unrecognized in a regular oncology office visit were identified. Our study indicates TUG and ADL might be use as predictive tests for hospitalization in elderly oncology populations. Also thrombocytopenia, and vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies are among the risk factors for hospitalization. The importance of vitamin B12 and folic acid vitamin replacement should not be underestimated in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common form of anemia. Impaired intake absorption and blood loss are the main factors in the etiology. Impaired absorption can be caused by a decrease in trace elements such as copper and zinc, which are found in the structure of enzymes that coordinate iron metabolism or act as a catalyst for them, and the existence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which inhibits iron absorption in the stomach. Serum levels of zinc, copper, and H. pylori antibodies were measured in IDA cases, and correlations with IDA were evaluated. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study group was composed of 115 IDA cases who were followed at hematology outpatient clinics, and the control group was composed of 92 gender- and age-matched healthy individuals. Patients were diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia according to hemoglobin, serum ferritin, and iron levels and total iron-binding capacity. Serum zinc, copper, H. pylori immunoglobulin A (HpIgA) and immunoglobulin G (HpIgG), vitamin B12, and folic acid levels were examined in the blood specimens collected. RESULTS No statistically significant difference in zinc and copper serum levels between the study and control groups was observed (p > 0.05 for both groups). Although no difference was observed between the HpIgG levels of the two groups, patients with IDA had a statistically significant increase in HpIgA levels (p < 0.05). Pearson's correlation analysis showed that the zinc levels of the IDA group did not have a correlation with any parameters (p < 0.05 for all). Copper levels had a positive correlation with only the HpIgA level in the IDA group (r = 0.222, p = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS Trace elements and H. pylori infection did not have a correlation with IDA. Elevated levels of HpIgA and positive correlation of HpIgA with copper levels were observed. The literature review clearly suggests that several points require further explanation, and extensive research with larger samples is required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to evaluate the iron absorption status by using the oral iron absorption test (OIAT) in older patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in comparison with younger patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS This is a cross-sectional study including 100 patients with iron deficiency anemia. Patients were divided in two groups; group 1 who is 65 and older and group 2 who is younger than 65. OIAT in which a fasting serum iron level is compared with a second serum iron level obtained three hours following oral ingestion of iron sulfate was performed. An increase in serum iron of at least 100 mcg/dL indicates that oral iron absorption is adequate. The Independent-Samples t-test was used to show the statistical difference between the means of two groups. RESULTS There were 100 patients in the study; 69 of them have completed the study. The means of the oral iron absorption test results of the groups was compared with an independent t-test, which showed that the mean of group 1 was lower than group 2 and this was statistically significant (p = 0.001). The mean of OIAT results was 86.1 and 163.5 in group 1 and 2 respectively. CONCLUSIONS In our knowledge, the present study is among the first that shows the status of iron absorption objectively by using OIAT in older patients. Our study shows iron absorption is decreased in older patients with IDA in comparison with younger patients. In the light of this finding; OIAT should be offered before initiating treatment in older patients when IDA is diagnosed and intravenous iron treatment should be considered more on the base of results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Several factors are known to affect prognosis of acute leukemia such as age, high leukocyte count, cytogenetic abnormality, performance status and recurrent leukemia. We aimed to investigate the association between cell surface markers and prognostic determinants such as recurrence at 6 and 12 months and survival at 6, 12 and 18 months in acute leukemia patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 142 patients, 101 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 41 with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) were included. The effects of surface markers on survival and recurrence rates were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS In AML patients, CD5+ and CD34+ immunophenotypes and in ALL patients cCD22+, CD34+ and CD49f + CD19+ immunophenotypes were positive prognostic indicators. In AML patients CD7 expression, and in ALL patients CD5+, CD7+ and CD117+ immunophenotypes and >90% CD45 expression were negative prognostic indicators. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that flow cytometry, a common diagnostic tool in acute leukemia, may also have prognostic value in acute leukemia in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our aim was to determine the presence or absence of malignant etiology in the epidemiological, clinical and laboratory results of patients undergoing lymph node biopsies. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study was carried out between January 2013 and April 2014. We enrolled a total of 150 adult patients who had lymph node biopsies. 73 of these were females (48.7%) and 77 were males (51.3%). The epidemiological characteristics, clinical and laboratory findings were evaluated and compared with the pathological results. RESULTS Leukopenia (p=0.05) thrombocytopenia (p=0.03) and increased lactate dehydrogenase levels (p=0.01) were found to be associated with the malignancy. In the cervical, submandibular, axillary and inguinal areas lymphadenopathy was generally seem to be benign while the rate of malignancy was higher in the intra-abdominal and supraclavicular regions. In those cases who had a lymph node index of below 2 there was a higher rate of malignancy (p=0.04). In cases which lymphadenopathy accompanied by splenomegaly has been found associated with malignancy (p=0.009). No association with regards to malignancy was found with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and hepatomegaly. CONCLUSIONS According to the results of the study five variables including cytopenia, lactate dehydrogenase levels, splenomegaly, lymph node index below 2, intra-abdominal and supraclavicular lymphadenopathy were concluded to be the most suitable means of predicting malignant etiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The disclosure of a diagnosis of cancer is complex, particularly in older patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between age and not knowing the diagnosis, and its impact on mood. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 70 patients with various types of solid and hematologic cancer in early stages, which were followed up in an outpatient oncology/hematology clinic in Turkey between January, 2014 and June, 2014. Initially the caregivers of patients were asked whether the patients knew their diagnosis or not. A questionnaire for the Geriatric Depression Scale was then administered to the patients. Patient age, gender, marital status and education level were noted and analyzed with respect to knowing the diagnosis and depression. RESULTS Of the 70 patients, 40% of them were female. The mean age was 68.2±8.9. The rate of the patients who does not know their diagnosis was 37.1% (n=26). The overall depression rate with GDS was found 37.1% (n=26) among the participants. There was no association with knowing the diagnosis (p=0.208) although the association between not knowing the diagnosis and age was significant (p=0.01). CONCLUSIONS In this study we revealed no association between not knowing the diagnosis and depression in elderly patients. Contrary to what some has thought, the patient is not protected from psychological distress by not being informed about the diagnosis. We believe this study and similar ones will help to discuss and further explore patient autonomy, the principle of respect to self-determination and end of life issues in different cultures.

Abstract
PURPOSE Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was evaluated as a potential prognostic factor in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). MATERIALS AND METHODS Between December 2009 and April 2014, 14 female (35%) and 26 male (65%) MDS patients who were followed up in our hematology clinic were included in the study for NLR during diagnosis. Division was into two groups according to the NLR, and the correlation with mortality was evaluated. The prognostic significance of NLR regarding treatment outcome was also evaluated with adjustment for known confounding risk factors. RESULTS The mortality rate of the patient group was 55%, and median survival was 18 months. There was no significant correlation between mortality and NLR at a median value of 1.8 (p=0.75). Thrombocytopenia was observed to increase mortality (p=0.027), and there was a significant correlation between mortality and pancytopenia (p=0.017). CONCLUSIONS This first study of NLR and mortality did not show any significant correlation . In centres with limited access to genetic evaluation for the presence of pancytopenia and/or thrombocytopenia at the time of diagnosis, a platelet level less than 50?109/l may be poor prognostic markers in MDS patients.

Abstract
Liver involvement in mutiple myeloma (MM) is not commonly encountered. In this report, we describe a patient who was diagnosed with IgG kappa type MM. A liver biopsy revealed monoclonal plasma cell infiltration. Hepatomegaly was the sole finding in physical examination and the liver function tests were not disturbed.

Abstract
Yeast infections play an important role in diabetics. Therefore poorly controlled diabetics and diabetics who have high levels of serum glucose carry a high risk. In the present study, 52 diabetics aged between 17-75 years old have been investigated by means of the incidence of oral candida and have been compared with control group of 33 healthy individuals. In poorly controlled diabetics, the rate of candida growth found high. It is also observed that this ratio is higher in type I than type II, and candida growth rate increased as well as serum glucose level. All of these results are found to be statistically important.
