Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a spectrum of disorders that are characterized by problems in social interaction and repetitive behavior. The disease is thought to develop from changes in brain development at an early age, although the exact mechanisms are not known yet. In addition, a significant number of people with ASD develop problems in the intestinal tract. A Disintegrin And Metalloproteases (ADAMs) include a group of enzymes that are able to cleave membrane-bound proteins. ADAM10 and ADAM17 are two members of this family that are able to cleave protein substrates involved in ASD pathogenesis, such as specific proteins important for synapse formation, axon signaling and neuroinflammation. All these pathological mechanisms are involved in ASD. Besides the brain, ADAM10 and ADAM17 are also highly expressed in the intestines. ADAM10 and ADAM17 have implications in pathways that regulate gut permeability, homeostasis and inflammation. These metalloproteases might be involved in microbiota-gut-brain axis interactions in ASD through the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses in the intestinal tract. In this review, the potential roles of ADAM10 and ADAM17 in the pathology of ASD and as targets for new therapies will be discussed, with a focus on the gut-brain axis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by the impairment of communication and social interaction and by repetitive, restricted and stereotyped interests. ASD is often accompanied by comorbidities; eating disorders are frequent and imply important nutritional deficits (i.e. deficiencies of vitamins, minerals and fatty acids). Vitamin D has a critical role in neurodevelopment and serum levels in ASD are reported inadequate. A useful reference for setting up a correct diet in childhood is the food pyramid, which is inspired by the Mediterranean Diet (MD). The MD guarantees an intake of nutrients, considered optimal to maintain an adequate nutritional status. The aim of this study is to explore serum levels of Vitamin D and food habits (through MD adherence) in a sample of children with ASD and evaluate a possible correlation between these factors. METHODS study participants include 91 children 47 presenting ASD and 44 healthy typically-developing (TD) subjects, as control group. We evaluated serum level of Vitamin D in both group; anthropometric parameters (weight, height, body mass index-BMI-and growth percentile) and MD adherence have been explored, in order to investigate the correlation among those data and level of Vitamin D in children with ASD. Lastly, the association between Vitamin D levels and severity of ASD symptoms has been analysed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION 74% of ASD group presented blood levels of Vitamin D under 30 ng/ml (normal range 30-100 ng/ml). The analysis performed showed that the two groups were significant different regards Vitamin D levels (t = 2.24, p < 0.05), according to literature. 31.9% of children with ASD presented a condition of overweight and 12.6% a condition of obesity. Adherence to the MD was low in 25.5% of cases. No significant statistical correlation has been found between Vitamin D serum levels, anthropometric parameters and the adherence to MD in the ASD group.

Abstract
Among the various psychological determinants of physical activity (PA) in early childhood, relatively little attention has been paid to the role of parent beliefs in the benefits of PA for their child. Believing that PA is beneficial may impact parent behavior, resulting in more opportunities for PA in early childhood, particularly among children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDs) who may face more barriers to PA. Greater opportunity for PA may promote the development of motor skills and healthy body composition. This study examined the association between parental beliefs about PA and children's weight status in a sample of 147 children (32 ± 4 months old) with NDs. The proportion of parents with below average (mean − 1SD) perceptions of the benefits of PA whose children were overweight or obese was approximately was 2.5 times (proportion ratio, 2.35; 95% CI, 1.05–5.27) larger than it was for parents with above average (mean + 1SD) perceptions (after adjusting for the confounding effects of ethnicity, marital status, and mothers' self-reported depressive symptoms). Mothers' self-reported depressive symptoms was the only other covariate that was significantly associated with the weight status of these children, though, these data also signal possible (p = 0.07) differences in proportions between Hispanic/Latinx and White children in the sample who were classified as overweight and obese. Our study demonstrates the importance of considering parental or caregiver beliefs in the value of PA as another risk factor that may predict risk for overweight and obesity. Future studies should include parental beliefs in the benefits of PA as a potential psychological determinant of PA and associated health outcomes.

Abstract
Intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) is an endogenous enzyme that promotes gastrointestinal homeostasis by detoxifying inflammatory mediators, tightening the gut barrier and promoting a healthy microbiome. Oral IAP administration was efficacious in ameliorating diabetes in a high fat diet (HFD)-induced murine model. In humans, maternal obesity and diabetes during pregnancy have been associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In mice, HFD-induced maternal obesity leads to offspring with cognitive deficiency. Here we investigated whether IAP administration to obese dams could ameliorate autism-like disorders in mice. Using a HFD murine model, we recapitulated that maternal obesity leads to male offspring with social deficits as shown by the three chamber test and reciprocal social interaction analyses. Notably, oral delivery of IAP to dams improved those deficiencies. In addition, a jumping behavior was noted in pups from obese dams, which was rescued by maternal IAP treatment. Our findings suggest that maternal treatment with IAP can relieve some ASD-like symptoms in offspring mice.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In the past five years, a growing number of studies have tried to illustrate the association between the peripheral blood level of C-reactive protein (CRP) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). However, the results have been inconsistent. To assess whether abnormal CRP in peripheral blood was associated with ASD, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS A systematic literature search was performed using the Embase, PubMed, Web of Knowledge, PsycINFO, and Cochrane databases through August 27, 2019. Reference lists were also checked by hand-searching. Clinical studies exploring CRP concentration in the peripheral blood of autistic children and healthy controls were included in our meta-analysis. Overlapping samples were excluded. We pooled obtained data using a fixed- or random-effect model based on a heterogeneity test with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software and STATA software. Standardized mean differences were converted to Hedges' g statistic in order to obtain the effect size adjusted for sample size. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, meta-regression, and publication bias tests were also undertaken. RESULTS Nine studies with 592 ASD children and 604 healthy children were included in our meta-analysis. Significantly elevated CRP levels in peripheral blood were found in ASD children compared with healthy controls (Hedges' g = 0.527, 95% CI: 0.224-0.830, p = 0.001). Subgroup analyses based on sample types and ethnicity also showed similar results, except for the plasma subgroup. There was also a significant association between peripheral CRP concentration and ASD after removing the studies identified by Galbraith plots. The results of the sensitivity analysis revealed that no single study could reverse our results. Meta-regression analyses revealed that the gender of autistic children had a moderating effect on the outcome of the meta-analysis. In addition, no obvious publication bias was found in the meta-analysis. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In our study, peripheral CRP levels were significantly elevated in autistic children compared with healthy children. These results may provide us some new insights about ASD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with developmental disabilities are at an increased risk of unhealthy eating habits, which may contribute to compromised growth and development. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit unique risk factors for unhealthy dietary patterns, including sensory issues and cognitive rigidity at mealtimes. OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study examined diet quality in a sample of children with ASD in Florida compared to nationally representative National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2014/2013-2014 data using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015). METHODS A 24-h food record was completed by 41 parents of children with ASD aged 2-17 years, and food and beverage items consumed by each child were reported per standardized 24-h recall protocol. Two models were used to compare mean total and component HEI-2015 scores to NHANES means: (1) comparing means for our full sample to published NHANES means for children aged 2-18 years and (2) a matched model with subjects matched 1:1 by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and parent education level. RESULTS HEI component scores were significantly lower (poorer) in children with ASD for whole fruit, total vegetables, dairy, total protein foods, and seafood and plant protein. Whole grains, fatty acids, added sugars, and refined grains scores were higher (better) in our sample. However, total HEI scores and HEI scores for all 13 components were similar among children with ASD and the matched cases from the NHANES data. CONCLUSIONS There are potential discrepancies in diet quality between children with ASD and general population. Further research with a larger sample size, reporting both total and component HEI scores, is needed.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorders as a group of pediatric neurodevelopmental diseases is a crucial part of the worldwide disabilities which have influence in communication skills, social interactions, and ability to understand the concepts. The precise pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorders due to the abundance of involved mechanisms is unknown. Some of these involved mechanisms are related to genetic factors, chronic neuro inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, immune dysregulation, hormonal imbalance, and environmental factors. Current main treatments for autisms are behavioral, nutritional and medical therapies, however there is not definitive treatment approach. Therein, more novel therapies are still required to improve the symptoms. Several preclinical and clinical evidence were shown that stem cell therapy is a potential treatment option for autism spectrum disorders individuals. Considering the significant factors which can affect the outcome of stem cell therapeutic effects including stem cell types, route and dosage of administration, and mechanism of activity along with selecting best animal models can be very important in performing clinical trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Weight status and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are rising public health concerns. An increasing number of reports indicate that individuals with ASD may have unhealthy weight status, but the evidence is mixed. To understand the weight status in individuals with ASD and provide strategies for prevention and intervention, we describe the protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at assessing the prevalence of obesity, overweight, and underweight in ASD. METHODS A broad range of key bibliographic databases including MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, Cochrane, and ISI Web of Science will be searched to identify studies reporting the prevalence of obesity, overweight, and underweight in patients with ASD. Retrieved records will be independently screened by 2 authors and relevant estimates will be extracted from studies reporting data on obesity, overweight, and underweight prevalence among individuals with ASD. The assessment of study quality will be conducted primarily using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale and checklist proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Prevalence estimates of obesity and overweight will be separately pooled using random-effects model. The pooled estimates will be summarized and presented by regional groupings. Subgroup analysis will be conducted for variables (such as study setting, participants' age, and geographical region) across studies, depending on data availability. Between-study heterogeneity will be assessed using the I statistic and explored through subgroup analyses. This systematic review and meta-analysis will be reported following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses checklist and the meta-analysis of observational studies in epidemiology statements guidelines for meta-analysis and systematic reviews of observational studies. RESULTS In this study, we will outline details of the aims and methods on the meta-analysis of weight status of individuals with ASD. CONCLUSION The results of this study will summarize the current data of weight status of individuals with ASD.
