Flexible plasmonics on unconventional and nonplanar substrates

Conformal surface plasmons propagating on ultrathin and flexible films

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are localized surface electromagnetic waves that propagate along the interface between a metal and a dielectric. Owing to their inherent subwavelength confinement, SPPs have a strong potential to become building blocks of a type of photonic circuitry built up on 2D metal surfaces; however, SPPs are difficult to control on curved surfaces conformably and flexibly to produce advanced functional devices. Here we propose the concept of conformal surface plasmons (CSPs), surface plasmon waves that can propagate on ultrathin and flexible films to long distances in a wide broadband range from microwave to mid-infrared frequencies. We present the experimental realization of these CSPs in the microwave regime on paper-like dielectric films with a thickness 600-fold smaller than the operating wavelength. The flexible paper-like films can be bent, folded, and even twisted to mold the flow of CSPs.

From metamaterials to metadevices

Metamaterials, artificial electromagnetic media that are structured on the subwavelength scale, were initially suggested for the negative-index 'superlens'. Later metamaterials became a paradigm for engineering electromagnetic space and controlling propagation of waves: the field of transformation optics was born. The research agenda is now shifting towards achieving tunable, switchable, nonlinear and sensing functionalities. It is therefore timely to discuss the emerging field of metadevices where we define the devices as having unique and useful functionalities that are realized by structuring of functional matter on the subwavelength scale. In this Review we summarize research on photonic, terahertz and microwave electromagnetic metamaterials and metadevices with functionalities attained through the exploitation of phase-change media, semiconductors, graphene, carbon nanotubes and liquid crystals. The Review also encompasses microelectromechanical metadevices, metadevices engaging the nonlinear and quantum response of superconductors, electrostatic and optomechanical forces and nonlinear metadevices incorporating lumped nonlinear components.

Reusable nanostencils for creating multiple biofunctional molecular nanopatterns on polymer substrate

In this paper, we demonstrate a novel method for high throughput patterning of bioprobes with nanoscale features on biocompatible polymer substrate. Our technique, based on nanostencil lithography, employs high resolution and robust masks integrated with array of reservoirs. We show that the smallest pattern size can reach down to 100 nm. We also show that different types of biomolecules can be patterned on the same substrate simultaneously. Furthermore, the stencil can be reused multiple times to generate a series of identical patterns at low cost. Finally, we demonstrate that biomolecules can be covalently patterned on the surface while retaining their biofunctionalities. By offering the flexibility on the nanopattern design and enabling the reusability of the stencil, our approach significantly simplifies the bionanopatterning process and therefore could have profound implications in diverse biological and medical applications.

Flexible and tunable silicon photonic circuits on plastic substrates

Flexible microelectronics has shown tremendous promise in a broad spectrum of applications, especially those that cannot be addressed by conventional microelectronics in rigid materials and constructions. These unconventional yet important applications range from flexible consumer electronics to conformal sensor arrays and biomedical devices. A recent paradigm shift in implementing flexible electronics is to physically transfer highly integrated devices made in high-quality, crystalline semiconductors on to plastic substrates. Here we demonstrate a flexible form of silicon photonics using the transfer-and-bond fabrication method. Photonic circuits including interferometers and resonators have been transferred onto flexible plastic substrates with preserved functionalities and performance. By mechanically deforming, the optical characteristics of the devices can be tuned reversibly over a remarkably large range. The demonstration of the new flexible photonic systems based on the silicon-on-plastic (SOP) platform could open the door to many future applications, including tunable photonics, optomechanical sensors and biomechanical and bio-photonic probes.

Perfect absorbers on curved surfaces and their potential applications

Recently perfect metamaterial absorbers triggered some fascination since they permit the observation of an extreme interaction of light with a nanostructured thin film. For the first time we evaluate here the functionality of such perfect absorbers if they are applied on curved surfaces. We probe their optical response and discuss potential novel applications. Examples are the complete suppression of back-scattered light from the covered objects, rendering it cloaked in reflection, and their action as optical black holes.

Reversibly stretchable and tunable terahertz metamaterials with wrinkled layouts

The use of wrinkling provides a generic route to stretchable metamaterials, with unprecedented terahertz tunability. The wrinkled metamaterial can be stretched reversibly up to 52.5%; the structural integrity can be maintained during at least 100 stretching/relaxing cycles. Importantly, the wrinkling of meta-atoms offers a deterministic way to achieve controlled broadening of electrical resonance.

High-resolution resistless nanopatterning on polymer and flexible substrates for plasmonic biosensing using stencil masks

The development of nanoscale lithographic methods on polymer materials is a key requirement to improve the spatial resolution and performance of flexible devices. Here, we report the fabrication of metallic nanostructures down to 20 and 50 nm in size on polymer materials such as polyimide, parylene, SU-8, and PDMS substrates without any resist processing using stencil lithography. Metallic nanodot array analysis of their localized surface plasmon spectra is included. We demonstrate plasmon resonance detection of biotin and streptavidin using a PDMS flexible film with gold nanodots. We also demonstrate the fabrication of metallic nanowires on polyimide substrates with their electrical characteristics showing an ohmic behavior. These results demonstrate high-resolution nanopatterning and device nanofabrication capability of stencil lithography on polymer and flexible substrates.

Plasmonic nanoclusters: near field properties of the Fano resonance interrogated with SERS

While the far field properties of Fano resonances are well-known, clusters of plasmonic nanoparticles also possess Fano resonances with unique and spatially complex near field properties. Here we examine the near field properties of individual Fano resonant plasmonic clusters using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) both from molecules distributed randomly on the structure and from dielectric nanoparticles deposited at specific locations within the cluster. Cluster size, geometry, and interparticle spacing all modify the near field properties of the Fano resonance. For molecules, the spatially dependent SERS response obtained from near field calculations correlates well with the relative SERS intensities observed for individual clusters and for specific Stokes modes of a para-mercaptoaniline adsorbate. In all cases, the largest SERS enhancement is found when both the excitation and the Stokes shifted wavelengths overlap the Fano resonances. In contrast, for SERS from carbon nanoparticles we find that the dielectric screening introduced by the nanoparticle can drastically redistribute the field enhancement associated with the Fano resonance and lead to a significantly modified SERS response compared to what would be anticipated from the bare nanocluster.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering as an Emerging Characterization and Detection Technique

While surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been attracting a continuously increasing interest of scientific community since its discovery, it has enjoyed a particularly rapid growth in the last decade. Most notable recent advances in SERS include novel technological approaches to SERS substrates and innovative applications of SERS in medicine and molecular biology. While a number of excellent reviews devoted to SERS appeared in the literature over the last two decades, we will focus this paper more specifically on several promising trends that have been highlighted less frequently. In particular, we will briefly overview strategies in designing and fabricating SERS substrates using deterministic patterning and then cover most recent biological applications of SERS.
