Recent Progress in Bionic Skin Based on Conductive Polymer Gels

Bionic skin sensors based on conductive polymer gels have garnered interest for their potential applications in human-computer interaction, soft robotics, biomedical systems, sports, and healthcare, because of their intrinsic flexibility and stretchability embedded at the material level, and other such as self-healing, adhesion, high, and low temperature tolerance properties that can be tuned through macromolecular design. Here, important advances in polymer gel-based flexible sensors over recent years are summarized, from material design, sensor fabrication to system-level applications. This review focuses on the representative strategies of design and preparing of conductive polymer gels, and adjusting their conductivity, mechanics, and other properties such as self-healing and adhesiveness by controlling the macromolecular network structures. The state-of-art of present flexible pressure and strain sensors, temperature sensors, position sensors, and multifunctional sensors based on capacitance, voltage, and resistance sensing technologies, are also systematically reviewed. Finally, perspectives on issues regarding further advances and challenges are provided.

PVA/CMC/PEDOT:PSS mixture hydrogels with high response and low impedance electronic signals for ECG monitoring

Skin-like electronics on human skin can be operated in real-time and in a non-invasive manner for ECG biosensors. Conductive hydrogels possessing high electrical conductivity, soft and moisturizing properties, have great potential in this field. Herein, we propose to use polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the skeleton of the hydrogel, the polyethylene-3,4-dioxythiophene:sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) mixture is evenly dispersed among it to form a continuous and interconnected conductive pathway. The prepared conductive hydrogels have an electrical conductivity of 75 S m^-1 with high water content (above 80 %) and mechanical properties, leading to sufficiently soft and moisturizing, and can take place of traditionally high-cost Ag/AgCl electrodes. Importantly, these conductive hydrogels are similar to human tissues and can form a naturally seamless interface between the human body and the ECG biosensor device, promoting the high response of obtained electronic signals with low impedance. Therefore, these functionalized conductive hydrogels show excellent application prospects in ECG biosensors.

Biomechanical Energy Harvesters Based on Ionic Conductive Organohydrogels via the Hofmeister Effect and Electrostatic Interaction

The recent use of cryoprotectant replacement method for solving the easy drying problem of hydrogels has attracted increasing research interest. However, the conductivity decrease of organohydrogels due to the induced insulating solvent limited their electronic applications. Herein, we introduce the Hofmeister effect and electrostatic interaction to generate hydrogen and sodium bonds in the hydrogel. Combined with its double network, an effective charge channel that will not be affected by the solvent replacement, is therefore built. The developed organohydrogel-based single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (OHS-TENG) shows low conductivity decrease (one order) and high output (1.02-1.81 W/m²), which is much better than reported OHS-TENGs (2-3 orders, 41.2-710 mW/m²). Moreover, replacing water with glycerol in the hydrogel enables the device to exhibit excellent long-term stability (four months) and temperature tolerance (-50-100 °C). The presented strategy and mechanism can be extended to common organohydrogel systems aiming at high performance in electronic applications.

Digital Light Processing 4D Printing of Transparent, Strong, Highly Conductive Hydrogels

Hydrogels have excellent biocompatibility, transparency, stretchability, and ionic conductivity, but their fabrication through photopolymerization-based 3D printing is limited due to the low solubility of hydrophobic photoinitiators and lack of efficient hydrophilic photoinitiators. Herein, a type of microemulsion is synthesized and the common hydrophobic photoinitiator can be adopted and finally, a series of transparent hydrogels with high strength (up to 22.9 MPa), elasticity (up to 583%), and ionic conductivity (up to 9.64 S m^-1) are fabricated through digital light processing 3D printing technology. Objects with complex structures and a high printing resolution are printed. Hydrogels with both high strength and high ionic conductivity are obtained through chemical crosslinking and ion coordination effect. Dual-material 3D printing is applied to package the hydrogel with elastomers. Due to the high sensitivity and reliability under both stretching and compressive deformation, the hydrogel sensors are applied to monitor various human motions. In addition, the hydrogel exhibits solvent-induced dehydration and excellent water-activated shape memory properties, which are greatly beneficial for its storage and applications in the biomedical field.

Multifunctional Biosensors Made with Self-Healable Silk Fibroin Imitating Skin

We report on robust silk fibroin (SF) gels fabricated by incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (SF/CNC) as a "tough" unit and photopolymerization of acrylamide as an "elastic" segment. The addition of CNC affects the refolding process of SF molecules controlled by nucleation via templating, resulting in a stable mesoscopic structure. The gel shows robust mechanical stability (88.8% of initial stress after 1000 compression cycles) and excellent adhesion to various materials. The connected gel can recover its ionic conductivity within 20 s and be stretched to a maximum strain of 498% after healing for 10 h with an efficiency of 95.2%. This multifunctional gel sensor can sensitively detect different toxic gases and small-scale and large-scale human motions in real-time. Its sensitivity is calculated as GF = 3.84 at 0-200% strain. Especially, the gel with 5 wt % thermochromic pigments as a visual temperature indicator can quickly reflect abnormal human body temperature according to the color change. Therefore, the strategy shows potential applications in flexible electrodes, biomimetic sensors, and visual biosensors.

Skin-like mechanoresponsive self-healing ionic elastomer from supramolecular zwitterionic network

Stretchable ionic skins are intriguing in mimicking the versatile sensations of natural skins. However, for their applications in advanced electronics, good elastic recovery, self-healing, and more importantly, skin-like nonlinear mechanoresponse (strain-stiffening) are essential but can be rarely met in one material. Here we demonstrate a robust proton-conductive ionic skin design via introducing an entropy-driven supramolecular zwitterionic reorganizable network to the hydrogen-bonded polycarboxylic acid network. The design allows two dynamic networks with distinct interacting strength to sequentially debond with stretch, and the conflict among elasticity, self-healing, and strain-stiffening can be thus defeated. The representative polyacrylic acid/betaine elastomer exhibits high stretchability (1600% elongation), immense strain-stiffening (24-fold modulus enhancement), ~100% self-healing, excellent elasticity (97.9 ± 1.1% recovery ratio, <14% hysteresis), high transparency (99.7 ± 0.1%), moisture-preserving, anti-freezing (elastic at -40 °C), water reprocessibility, as well as easy-to-peel adhesion. The combined advantages make the present ionic elastomer very promising in wearable iontronic sensors for human-machine interfacing.

Bistable Elastic Electrochromic Ionic Gels for Energy-Saving Displays

The diversification of electrochromic materials greatly expands the application fields of electrochromic devices. However, highly flexible electrochromic materials remain challenging due to the inherent limitations associated with the existing electrochromic processes. Inspired by the hydrogen bonding effect in the hydrogel structure, a highly elastic and bistable electrochromic ionic gel based on a hydrogen bonding cross-linking network is prepared by solution polymerization having excellent tensile resilience, uniform coloring, reversible switching (≤24.3 s), maximum transmittance change (≥80%), bistability (54 h), reversibility (>500 cycles), and coloration efficiency (≥85.3 cm²·C^-1). This method has been used to develop bistable electrochromic displays. The unconventional exploration of the bistable design principle may provide a new idea for the realization of bistable electrochromic devices.

Underwater Communication and Optical Camouflage Ionogels

Marine animals, such as leptocephalus and jellyfish, can sense external stimuli and achieve optical camouflage in the aquatic environment. Fabricating an intelligent soft sensor that can mimic the capabilities of transparent marine animals and function underwater can enable transformative applications in various novel fields. However, previously reported soft sensors struggle to meet the requirements of adhesion, self-healing ability, optical transparency, and stable conductivity in the aquatic environment. Herein, high-performance ionogels by virtue of ion-dipole and ion-ion interactions between fluorine-rich poly(ionic liquid) and ionic liquid are designed. The hydrophobic dynamic viscoelastic networks provide excellent properties for ionogels, including optical transparency, adjustable mechanical properties, underwater self-healing ability, underwater adhesiveness, conductivity, and 3D printability. A mechanically compliant and visually invisible underwater soft sensor based on ionogel is developed. This sensor can achieve optical camouflage, human-body-motion detection, and barrier-free communication in the aquatic environment. A novel contactless sensing mechanism based on changing the electron transfer pathway is proposed. Several interesting functions, such as detection of water environment changes, recognition of objects, delivery of information, and even identification of human standing posture can be realized. Importantly, the ionogel sensor can avoid fatigue and physical damage in the sensing process.

Dense Hydrogen-Bonding Network Boosts Ionic Conductive Hydrogels with Extremely High Toughness, Rapid Self-Recovery, and Autonomous Adhesion for Human-Motion Detection

The construction of ionic conductive hydrogels with high transparency, excellent mechanical robustness, high toughness, and rapid self-recovery is highly desired yet challenging. Herein, a hydrogen-bonding network densification strategy is presented for preparing a highly stretchable and transparent poly(ionic liquid) hydrogel (PAM-r-MVIC) from the perspective of random copolymerization of 1-methyl-3-(4-vinylbenzyl) imidazolium chloride and acrylamide in water. Ascribing to the formation of a dense hydrogen-bonding network, the resultant PAM-r-MVIC exhibited an intrinsically high stretchability (>1000%) and compressibility (90%), fast self-recovery with high toughness (2950 kJ m⁻³), and excellent fatigue resistance with no deviation for 100 cycles. Dissipative particle dynamics simulations revealed that the orientation of hydrogen bonds along the stretching direction boosted mechanical strength and toughness, which were further proved by the restriction of molecular chain movements ascribing to the formation of a dense hydrogen-bonding network from mean square displacement calculations. Combining with high ionic conductivity over a wide temperature range and autonomous adhesion on various surfaces with tailored adhesive strength, the PAM-r-MVIC can readily work as a highly stretchable and healable ionic conductor for a capacitive/resistive bimodal sensor with self-adhesion, high sensitivity, excellent linearity, and great durability. This study might provide a new path of designing and fabricating ionic conductive hydrogels with high mechanical elasticity, high toughness, and excellent fatigue resilience for skin-inspired ionic sensors in detecting complex human motions.

Self-Healing and Highly Stretchable Hydrogel for Interfacial Compatible Flexible Paper-Based Micro-Supercapacitor

Most reported wearable electronic devices lack self-healing chemistry and flexible function to maintain stable energy output while irreversible damages and complex deformations. In this work, we report a dual-dynamic network electrolyte synthesized by micellar elastomers introduced into strong hydrogel matrix. The gel electrolyte is fabricated by physically cross-linking the borax-polyvinyl alcohol (B-PVA) network as tough matrix and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-poly (propylene oxide) (PPO)-poly (ethylene oxide) (Pluronic) to frame elastic network, followed by immersion in potassium chloride solution. Under the action of dynamic borate ester bond and multi-network hydrogen bond, the as-prepared electrolyte exhibits high stretchability (1535%) and good self-healing efficiency. Based on the electrolyte, we assemble the interfacial compatible micro-supercapacitor (MSC) by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) interdigital electrode printed on cellulosic paper by direct ink writing (DIW) technique. Thanks to the large specific area and compressive deformation resistance of cellulosic paper, the MSC with tightly interfacial contact achieves high volumetric capacitance of 801.9 mF cm⁻³ at the current density of 20 μA cm⁻². In the absence of stimulation of the external environment, the self-healing MSC demonstrates an ideal capacity retention (90.43%) after five physical damaged/healing cycles. Our research provides a clean and effective strategy to construct wearable MSC.
