From Nanographene and Graphene Nanoribbons to Graphene Sheets: Chemical Synthesis

Diradical Organic One-Dimensional Polymers Synthesized on a Metallic Surface

We report on the synthesis and characterization of atomically precise one-dimensional diradical peripentacene polymers on a Au(111) surface. By means of high-resolution scanning probe microscopy complemented by theoretical simulations, we provide evidence of their magnetic properties, which arise from the presence of two unpaired spins at their termini. Additionally, we probe a transition of their magnetic properties related to the length of the polymer. Peripentacene dimers exhibit an antiferromagnetic (S=0) singlet ground state. They are characterized by singlet-triplet spin-flip inelastic excitations with an effective exchange coupling (Jeff ) of 2.5 meV, whereas trimers and longer peripentacene polymers reveal a paramagnetic nature and feature Kondo fingerprints at each terminus due to the unpaired spin. Our work provides access to the precise fabrication of polymers featuring diradical character which are potentially useful in carbon-based optoelectronics and spintronics.

Chemically synthesized chevron-like graphene nanoribbons for electrochemical sensors development: determination of epinephrine

We employ chevron-like graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) synthesized by a solution-based chemical route to develop a novel electrochemical sensor for determination of the neurotransmitter epinephrine (EPI). The sensor surface, a glassy carbon electrode modified with GNRs, is characterized by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, which show that the electrode surface modification comprises of bi-dimensional multilayer-stacked GNRs that retain their molecular structure. The charge transfer process occurring at the electrode interface is evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sensor is applied to the determination of EPI, employing as an analytical signal the reduction peak corresponding to the epinephrinechrome–leucoepinephrinechrome transition (E = − 0.25 V) instead of the oxidation peak usually employed in the literature (E =  + 0.6 V) in order to minimize interferences. The results obtained demonstrate that chevron-like nanoribbons synthesized by solution methods exhibit reliable electrocatalytic activity for EPI determination. Using differential pulse voltammetry, we obtain a linear concentration range from 6.4 × 10^–6 to 1.0 × 10^–4 M and a detection limit of 2.1 × 10^–6 M. The applicability of the sensor was evaluated by determining EPI in pharmaceutical samples with satisfactory results.

Dual Amplified Spontaneous Emission and Lasing from Nanographene Films

Chemically synthesized zigzag-edged nanographenes (NG) have recently demonstrated great success as the active laser units in solution-processed organic distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. Here, we report the first observation of dual amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a large-size NG derivative (with 12 benzenoid rings) dispersed in a polystyrene film. ASE is observed simultaneously at the 685 and 739 nm wavelengths, which correspond to different transitions of the photoluminescence spectrum. Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy has been used to ascertain the underlying photophysical processes taking place in the films. DFB lasers, based on these materials and top-layer nanostructured polymeric resonators (i.e., one or two-dimensional surface relief gratings), have been fabricated and characterized. Lasers emitting close to either one of the two possible ASE wavelengths, or simultaneously at both of them, have been prepared by proper selection of the resonator parameters.

Graphene-based carbocatalysts for carbon-carbon bond formation

Organic transformations are usually catalyzed by metal-based catalysts. In contrast, metal-free catalysts have attracted considerable attention from the viewpoint of sustainability and safety. Among the studies in metal-free catalysis, graphene-based materials have been introduced in the reactions that are usually catalyzed by transition metal catalysts. This review covers the literature (up to the beginning of April 2020) on the use of graphene and its derivatives as carbocatalysts for C-C bond-forming reactions, which are one of the fundamental reactions in organic syntheses. Besides, mechanistic studies are included for the rational understanding of the catalysis. Graphene has significant potential in the field of metal-free catalysis because of the fine-tunable potential of the structure, high stability and durability, and no metal contamination, making it a next-generation candidate material in catalysis.

BNB-Doped Phenalenyls: Modular Synthesis, Optoelectronic Properties, and One-Electron Reduction

A highly modular synthesis of BNB- and BOB-doped phenalenyls is presented. Treatment of the 1,8-naphthalenediyl-bridged boronic acid anhydride 1 with LiAlH₄/Me₃SiCl afforded the corresponding 1,8-naphthalenediyl-supported diborane(6) 2, which served as the starting material for all subsequent transformations. Upon addition of MesMgBr/Me₃SiCl, 2 was readily converted to the tetraorganyl diborane(6) 5. The further heteroatoms were finally introduced through the reaction of 2 with (Me₃Si)₂NR' or 5 with H₂NR' or H₂O (R' = H, Me, p-Tol). A helically twisted, fully BNB-embedded PAH 11 was prepared by combining 2 with a dibrominated m-terphenylamine, followed by a Grignard-mediated double ring-closure reaction. All compounds devoid of B-H bonds show favorable optoelectronic properties, such as luminescence and reversible reduction behavior. In the case of the BNB-phenalenyl 7 (BMes, NMe), the radical-anion salt K[7^•] was generated through chemical reduction with K metal and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. K[7^•] is not long-term stable in a THF/c-hexane solution, but abstracts an H atom with formation of the diamagnetic BNB-doped 1H-phenalene K[7H].

Tailoring Magnetic Features in Zigzag-Edged Nanographenes by Controlled Diels-Alder Reactions

Nanographenes (NGs) with tunable electronic and magnetic properties have attracted enormous attention in the realm of carbon-based nanoelectronics. In particular, NGs with biradical character at the ground state are promising building units for molecular spintronics. However, most of the biradicaloids are susceptible to oxidation under ambient conditions and photolytic degradation, which hamper their further applications. Herein, we demonstrated the feasibility of tuning the magnetic properties of zigzag-edged NGs in order to enhance their stability via the controlled Diels-Alder reactions of peri-tetracene (4-PA). The unstable 4-PA (y0 =0.72; half-life, t1/2 =3 h) was transformed into the unprecedented benzo-peri-tetracenes (BPTs) by a one-side Diels-Alder reaction, which featured a biradical character at the ground state (y0 =0.60) and exhibited remarkable stability under ambient conditions for several months. In addition, the fully zigzag-edged circumanthracenes (CAs) were achieved by two-fold or stepwise Diels-Alder reactions of 4-PA, in which the magnetic properties could be controlled by employing the corresponding dienophiles. Our work reported herein opens avenues for the synthesis of novel zigzag-edged NGs with tailor-made magnetic properties.

O-Annulation to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: A Tale of Optoelectronic Properties from Five- to Seven-Membered Rings

We take advantage of the Pummerer oxidative annulation reaction to extend PAHs through the formation of an intramolecular C-O bond with a suitable phenol substituent. Depending on the peripheral topology of the PAH precursor (e.g., pyrene, boron-dipyrromethene, or perylene diimide) five-, six-, and seven-membered O-containing rings could be obtained. The effect of the O-annulations on the optoelectronic properties were studied by various methods with the pyrano-annulated pyrene and BODIPY derivatives depicting quantitative emission quantum yields.

N-Doping of Polyaromatic Capsules: Small Cavity Modification Leads to Large Change in Host-Guest Interactions

To gain insight into the host functions of a nanocavity encircled by both polyaromatic panels and heteroatoms, nitrogen-doped polyaromatic capsules were successfully synthesized from metal ions and pyridine-embedded, bent anthracene-based ligands. The new capsules display unique host-guest interactions in the isolated cavities, which are distinct from those of the undoped analogues. Besides the inclusion of Ag⁺ ions, the large absorption change of fullerene C₆₀ and altered emission of a BODIPY dimer are observed upon encapsulation by the present hosts. Moreover, the N-doped capsule exhibits specific binding ability toward progesterone and methyltestosterone, known as a natural female and synthetic male hormone, respectively, in water.

Visualization of the Borazine Core of B3N3-Doped Nanographene by STM

Electronic interface properties and the initial growth of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene with a borazine core (BN-HBC) on Au(111) have been studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A weak, but non-negligible, interaction between BN-HBC and Au(111) was found at the interface. Both hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) and BN-HBC molecules form well-defined monolayers. The different contrast in STM images of HBC and BN-HBC at different tunneling voltages with submolecular resolution can be ascribed to differences in the local density of states (LDOS). At positive and negative tunneling voltages, STM images reproduce the distribution of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO) as determined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations very well.

Twofold π-Extension of Polyarenes via Double and Triple Radical Alkyne peri-Annulations: Radical Cascades Converging on the Same Aromatic Core

A versatile synthetic route to distannyl-substituted polyarenes was developed via double radical peri-annulations. The cyclization precursors were equipped with propargylic OMe traceless directing groups (TDGs) for regioselective Sn-radical attack at the triple bonds. The two peri-annulations converge at a variety of polycyclic cores to yield expanded difunctionalized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This approach can be extended to triple peri-annulations, where annulations are coupled with a radical cascade that connects two preexisting aromatic cores via a formal C-H activation step. The installed Bu₃Sn groups serve as chemical handles for further functionalization via direct cross-coupling, iodination, or protodestannylation and increase solubility of the products in organic solvents. Photophysical studies reveal that the Bu₃Sn-substituted PAHs are moderately fluorescent, and their protodestannylation results in an up to 10-fold fluorescence quantum yield enhancement. DFT calculations identified the most likely possible mechanism of this complex chemical transformation involving two independent peri-cyclizations at the central core.

On-Surface Synthesis of NBN-Doped Zigzag-Edged Graphene Nanoribbons

We report the first bottom‐up synthesis of NBN‐doped zigzag‐edged GNRs (NBN‐ZGNR1 and NBN‐ZGNR2) through surface‐assisted polymerization and cyclodehydrogenation based on two U‐shaped molecular precursors with an NBN unit preinstalled at the zigzag edge. The resultant zigzag‐edge topologies of GNRs are elucidated by high‐resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in combination with noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc‐AFM). Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electronic structures of NBN‐ZGNR1 and NBN‐ZGNR2 are significantly different from those of their corresponding pristine fully‐carbon‐based ZGNRs. Additionally, DFT calculations predict that the electronic structures of NBN‐ZGNRs can be further tailored to be gapless and metallic through one‐electron oxidation of each NBN unit into the corresponding radical cations. This work reported herein provides a feasible strategy for the synthesis of GNRs with stable zigzag edges yet tunable electronic properties.

Polycyclic aromatic chains on metals and insulating layers by repetitive [3+2] cycloadditions

The vast potential of organic materials for electronic, optoelectronic and spintronic devices entails substantial interest in the fabrication of π-conjugated systems with tailored functionality directly at insulating interfaces. On-surface fabrication of such materials on non-metal surfaces remains to be demonstrated with high yield and selectivity. Here we present the synthesis of polyaromatic chains on metallic substrates, insulating layers, and in the solid state. Scanning probe microscopy shows the formation of azaullazine repeating units on Au(111), Ag(111), and h-BN/Cu(111), stemming from intermolecular homo-coupling via cycloaddition reactions of CN-substituted polycyclic aromatic azomethine ylide (PAMY) intermediates followed by subsequent dehydrogenation. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry demonstrates that the reaction also takes place in the solid state in the absence of any catalyst. Such intermolecular cycloaddition reactions are promising methods for direct synthesis of regioregular polyaromatic polymers on arbitrary insulating surfaces.

Epitaxial Growth of Flat, Metallic Monolayer Phosphorene on Metal Oxide

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) group VA elemental materials have attracted considerable interest from physics/chemistry and materials science communities, with particular attention paid to honeycomb blue phosphorene. To date, phosphorene is limited to its α-phase and small sizes because it can only be produced by exfoliating black phosphorus crystals. Here, we report the direct synthesis of high-quality phosphorene on a nonmetallic copper oxide substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the growth intermediates and electronic structures of phosphorene on Cu₃O₂/Cu(111). Surprisingly, the grown phosphorene has a flat honeycomb lattice, similar to graphene, which exhibits a metallic nature. We reveal that the growth mechanism and morphology of phosphorene are strongly correlated with the surface structures of prepared copper oxide, and the resulting phosphorene can be stabilized after high-temperature annealing above 600 K even in oxygen gas. The high stability is closely related to the irregular Moiré pattern and structural corrugations of phosphorene on Cu₃O₂/Cu(111) that efficiently relieve the surface strain. These results shed light on future fabrication of large-scale, versatile 2D structures for interconnect and device integration.

Porphyrin-rylene-diimide-hexabenzocoronene triads

Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs), substituted by two different chromophores in an ortho arrangement, were synthesized for the first time and investigated towards their photophysical properties. Rylene-diimide dyes, in particular naphthalene-diimides (NDIs) and perylene-diimides (PDIs), were attached to the HBC as the first, and porphyrins as the second chromophore. Therefore, porphyrin-NDI-HPB as well as porphyrin-PDI-HPB precursors were accessed and converted into the respective HBC derivatives applying oxidative Scholl conditions. UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy showed interesting photophysical behavior such as energy transfer processes. Particularly, the porphyrin-PDI-HBC displays pronounced absorption features between 330–650 nm, which cover a wide range of the visible spectrum.

A leaf vein-like hierarchical silver grids transparent electrode towards high-performance flexible electrochromic smart windows

As essential components of numerous flexible and wearable optoelectronic devices, the flexible transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) with sufficient optical transmittance and electric conductivity become more and more important. In this work, we fabricated a large-area flexible TCE based on leaf vein-like hierarchical metal grids (HMG) comprising of mesoscale "trunk" and microscale "branches". The self-formed branched grids made the conducting paths distributing uniformly while the laser-etching trunk grids enabled to transport the collected electrons across long-distance. The Ag HMG exhibited high optical transmittance (~81%) with low sheet resistance (1.36 Ω sq^-1), which could be simply optimized through adjusting the grids' widths, spaces, and the sizes of the TiO₂ colloidal crackle patterns. In addition, on the basis of such advanced HMG electrode, flexible electrochromic devices (ECDs) with remarkable cyclic performance were fabricated. The HMG with high transparency, conductivity, and flexibility provides a promising TCE for the next-generation flexible and wearable optoelectronic devices.

Exciton Coherence Length and Dynamics in Graphene Quantum Dot Assemblies

Exciton size and dynamics were studied in assemblies of two well-defined graphene quantum dots of varying size: hexabenzocoronene (HBC), where the aromatic core consists of 42 C atoms, and carbon quantum dot (CQD) with 78 C atoms. The synthesis of HBC and CQD were achieved using bottom-up chemical methods, while their assembly was studied using steady-state UV/vis spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, and electron microscopy. While HBC forms long ordered fibers, CQD was found not to assemble well. The exciton size and dynamics were studied using time-resolved laser spectroscopy. At early times (∼100 fs), the exciton was found to delocalize over ∼1-2 molecular units in both assemblies, which reflects the confined nature of excitons in carbon-based materials and is consistent with the calculated value of ∼2 molecular units. Exciton-exciton annihilation measurements provided the exciton diffusion lengths of 16 and 3 nm for HBC and CQD, respectively.

Hydrogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: isomerism and aromaticity

A simple model based on adjacency matrices is introduced to study the stability of hydrogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Aromaticity governs their relative stability having the most stable isomers the higher number of non-hydrogenated rings.

Highly Efficient Metal-Free Nitrogen-Doped Nanocarbons with Unexpected Active Sites for Aerobic Catalytic Reactions

Nitrogen (N)-doped nanocarbons (NDN) as metal-free catalysts have elicited considerable attention toward selective oxidation of alcohols with easily oxidizable groups to aldehydes in the past few years. However, finding a new NDN catalytic material that can meet the requirement of the feasibility on the aerobic catalytics for other complicated alcohols is a big challenge. The real active sites and the corresponding mechanisms on NDN are still unambiguous because of inevitable coexistence of diverse edge sites and N species based on recently reported doping methods. Here, four NDN catalysts with enriched pyridinic N species and without any graphitic N species are simply fabricated via a chemical-vapor-deposition-like method. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra suggest that the dominating N species on NDN are pyridinic N. It is demonstrated that NDN catalysts perform impressive reactivity for aerobic oxidation of complicated alcohols at an atmospheric pressure. Eleven kinds of aromatic molecules with single N species and tunable π conjugation systems are used as model catalysts to experimentally identify the actual role of each N species at a real molecular level. It is suggested that pyridinic N species play an unexpected role in catalytic reactions. Neighboring carbon atoms in pyridinic N species are responsible for facilitating the rate-determining step process clarified by kinetic isotope effects, in situ nuclear magnetic resonance, in situ attenuated total reflectance infrared, and theoretical calculation. Moreover, NDN catalysts exhibit a good catalytic feasibility on the synthesis of important natural products (e.g., intermediates of vitamin E and K3) from phenol oxidation.

Emerging Bottom-Up Strategies for the Synthesis of Graphene Nanoribbons and Related Structures

The solution-phase synthesis is one of the most promising strategies for the preparation of well-defined graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) in large scale. To prepare high quality, defect-free GNRs, cycloaromatization reactions need to be very efficient, proceed without side reaction and mild enough to accommodate the presence of various functional groups. In this Minireview, we present the latest synthetic approaches for the synthesis of GNRs and related structures, including alkyne benzannulation, photochemical cyclodehydrohalogenation, Mallory and Pd- and Ni-catalyzed reactions.

Theoretical research on the oxidation mechanism of doped carbon based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

To understand the essential reasons of poor durability and rapid initial performance loss of heteroatom doped graphene catalysts during the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process, it is necessary to explore the detailed mechanism of carbon active site oxidation reaction (COR) at different electrode potentials, as it may greatly influence the ORR activity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculation is used to investigate all possible COR mechanisms, including Direct-COR and Indirect-COR, on four typical doped-graphene, and understand the competing relation between COR and ORR from a thermodynamic point of view. Our systematic calculations found that the Direct-COR is affected directly by the structural stability of doped-graphene relative to pure graphite, and the Indirect-COR can be accelerated largely by the ORR process due to the ORR intermediate, such as O and OOH. The competition relation between COR and ORR is mainly influenced by the interaction between the doped-graphene and reaction species, stability of doped-structure, ORR mechanism, and electrode potential. For COR, the partial oxidation of doped-graphene is the dominant oxidation reaction compared to complete oxidation in the ORR potential range. More importantly, both partial and complete oxidation of doped-graphene can remarkably depress the ORR activity. Hence, COR should be one of the major contributors to the rapid initial performance loss of carbon based catalysts in stability testing. Our results provide a comprehensive and deep understanding of the oxidation of carbon active sites on doped-graphene surfaces and can guide the design of more robust doped-carbon based catalysts.

Synthesis of a novel hexaazatriphenylene derivative for the selective detection of copper ions in aqueous solution

A hexaazatriphenylene (HAT) derivative, naphtho[2,3-h]naphtho[2',3':7,8]quinoxalino[2,3-a]naphtho[2',3':7,8]quinoxalino[2,3-c]phenazine-5,10,15,20,25,30-hexaone (NQH) was synthesized, characterized, and found to have novel properties in being selective toward the detection of copper (Cu2+) ions. The capability of NQH to be employed as a colorimetric, chemo-fluorescence and electrochemical sensor for the detection of Cu2+ was demonstrated by performing UV-Vis absorbance, fluorescence intensity, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. The interaction between NQH and Cu2+ was initially observed with an obvious color change from yellow to brown upon the addition of Cu2+ ions to NQH. The interaction was also confirmed by UV-Vis absorbance, fluorescence intensity, and mass spectroscopy (MS/MS) measurements. UV absorbance, fluorescence and CV of NQH toward Cu2+ showed good linearity with a detection limit of 3.32 μM, 2.20 μM and 0.78 μM, respectively, which are lower than the toxicity levels of copper in drinking water (20-30 μM) set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO). A 1 : 2 stoichiometry complexation between NQH and Cu2+ was confirmed by Job's plot and MS/MS. In addition, the selectivity and sensitivity of the NQH compound towards Cu2+ ions were further confirmed by performing CV on a screen printed flexible and planar electrochemical sensor.

Dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene as Highly Luminescent Nanographene: Efficient Synthesis via Photochemical Cyclodehydroiodination, Optoelectronic Properties, and Single-Molecule Spectroscopy

Dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene (DBOV), as a new nanographene, has demonstrated promising optical properties, such as red emission with a high fluorescence quantum yield of 79% and stimulated emission, as well as high thermal stability and photostability, which indicated its promise as a light-emitting and optical gain material. However, the previous synthetic routes required at least 12 steps. This obstructed access to different derivatives, e.g., to obtain crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis and to tune the optoelectronic properties. Here, we report an efficient synthetic pathway to DBOV based on a sequential iodination-benzannulation of bi(naphthylphenyl)diyne, followed by photochemical cyclodehydroiodination (PCDHI). This protocol included a fused bischrysene as a key intermediate and furnished scalable amounts of meso-substituted DBOV derivatives with different substituents. DBOV with 2,6-dimethylphenyl groups could be used for single-crystal X-ray analysis, revealing the precise structure of the DBOV core. The optoelectronic properties of the DBOV derivatives were investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations. Single-molecule spectroscopy at room and low temperatures provided novel insights into the photophysics of DBOV embedded in a polymer film. As a result of weak coupling of the optical transitions to the matrix, single-molecule emission spectra at 4.5 K showed narrow vibronic lines. The fluorescence autocorrelation function covering 9 orders of magnitude in time displayed high contrast photon antibunching and bunching, from which the fluorescence decay rate and the triplet population and depopulation rates could be retrieved. Remarkably, the intersystem crossing rate into the triplet state decreased by more than an order of magnitude at low temperature, demonstrating that temperature can be a crucial parameter to boost single photon emission of an aromatic hydrocarbon.

Solid-state Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions: olefin-accelerated C-C coupling using mechanochemistry

The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction is one of the most reliable methods for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds in solution. However, examples for the corresponding solid-state cross-coupling reactions remain scarce. Herein, we report the first broadly applicable mechanochemical protocol for a solid-state palladium-catalyzed organoboron cross-coupling reaction using an olefin additive. Compared to previous studies, the newly developed protocol shows a substantially broadened substrate scope. Our mechanistic data suggest that olefin additives might act as dispersants for the palladium-based catalyst to suppress higher aggregation of the nanoparticles, and also as stabilizer for the active monomeric Pd(0) species, thus facilitating these challenging solid-state C-C bond forming cross-coupling reactions.
