NBN- and BNB-Phenalenyls: the Yin and Yang of Heteroatom-doped π Systems

NBN- and BNB-doped phenalenyls are isoelectronic to phenalenyl anions and cations, respectively. They represent a pair of complementary molecules that have essentially identical structures but opposite properties as electron donors and acceptors. The NBN-phenalenyls 1-4 considered here were prepared from N,N'-dimethyl-1,8-diaminonaphthalene and readily available boron-containing building blocks (i. e., BH3⋅SMe2 (1), p-CF3-C6H4B(OH)2 (2), C6H5B(OH)2 (3), or MesBCl2/iPr2NEt (4)). Treatment of 1 with 4-Me2N-2,6-Me2-C6H2Li gave the corresponding NBN derivative 5. The BNB-phenalenyl 6 was synthesized from 1,8-naphthalenediyl-bridged diborane(6), PhNH2, and MesMgBr. A computational study reveals that the photoemission of 1, 4, and 5 originates from locally excited (LE) states at the NBN-phenalenyl fragments, while that of 2 is dominated by charge transfer (CT) from the NBN-phenalenyl to the p-CF3-C6H4 fragment. Depending on the dihedral angle θ between its Ph and NBN planes, compound 3 emits mainly from a less polar LE (θ >55°) or more polar CT state (θ <55°). In turn, the energetic preference for either state is governed by the polarity of the solvent used. An equimolar aggregate of the NBN- and BNB-phenalenyls 3 and 6 (in THF/H2O) shows a distinct red-shifted emission compared to that of the individual components, which originates from an intermolecular CT state.

Tetramerization of BEB-Doped Phenalenyls to Obtain (BE)8-[16]Annulenes (E = N, O)

Two (BE)8-[16]annulenes were prepared and fully characterized by experimental and quantum-chemical means (1, E = N; 2, E = O). The 1,8-naphthalenediyl-bridged diborane(6) 3 served as their common starting material, which was treated with [Al(NH3)6]Cl3 to form 1 (91% yield) or with 1,8-naphthalenediboronic acid anhydride to form 2 (93% yield). As a result, the heteroannulenes 1 and 2 are supported by four aromatic "clamps" and may also be viewed as NH- or O-bridged cyclic tetramers of BNB- or BOB-doped phenalenyls. X-ray crystallography on mono-, di-, and tetraadducts 2·thf, 2·py2, and 2·py4 showed that 2 is an oligotopic Lewis acid (thf/py: tetrahydrofuran/pyridine donor). The applicability of 2 also as a Lewis basic ligand in coordination chemistry was demonstrated by the synthesis of the mononuclear Ag+ complex [Ag(py)2(2·py4)]+ and the dinuclear Pb2+ complex 6. During the assembly of 6, the rearrangement of 2 led to the formation of two (BO)9-macrocycles linked by two BOB-phenalenyls to form a nanometer-sized cage with four negatively charged, tetracoordinated B atoms. Both 1 and 2 show several redox waves in the cathodic regions of the cyclic voltammograms. An in-depth assessment of the consequences of electron injection on the aromaticity of 1 and 2 was achieved by electronic structure calculations. 1 and 2 are proposed to exhibit aromatic switching capabilities in the [16]annulene motif.

Confined Lewis Pairs: Investigation of the X- →Si20 Interaction in Halogen-Encapsulating Silafulleranes

A joint theoretical and experimental study on 32 endohedral silafullerane derivatives [X@Si20 Y20 ]- (X=F-I; Y=F-I, H, Me, Et) andT h ${T_h }$ -[Cl@Si20 H12 Y8 ]- (Y=F-I) is presented. First, we evaluated the structure-determining template effect of Cl- in a systematic series of concave silapolyquinane model systems. Second, we investigated the X- →Si20 interaction energy (E int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ ) as a function of X- and Y and found the largestE int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ values for electron-withdrawing exohedral substituents Y. Given that X- ions can be considered as Lewis bases and empty Si20 Y20 clusters as Lewis acids, we classify our inseparable host-guest complexes [X@Si20 Y20 ]- as "confined Lewis pairs". Third, 35 Cl NMR spectroscopy proved to be highly diagnostic for an experimental assessment of the Cl- →Si20 interaction as the paramagnetic shielding and, in turn, δ ${\delta }$ (35 Cl) of the endohedral Cl- ion correlate inversely withE int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ . Finally, we disclose the synthesis of [PPN][Cl@Si20 Y20 ] (Y=Me, Et, Br) and provide a thorough characterization of these new silafulleranes.

Anions featuring an aluminium-silicon core with alumanyl silanide and aluminata-silene characteristics

Molecular species containing multiple bonds to aluminium have long been challenging synthetic targets. Despite recent landmark discoveries in this area, heterodinuclear Al-E multiple bonds (where E is a group-14 element) have remained rare and limited to highly polarized π-interactions (Al=E ↔ +Al-E-). Here we report the isolation of three alumanyl silanide anions that feature an Al-Si core stabilized by bulky substituents and a Si-Na interaction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory calculations show that the Al-Si interaction possesses partial double bond character. Preliminary reactivity studies support this description of the compounds through two resonance structures: one that displays a predominant nucleophilic character of the sodium-coordinated silicon centre in the Al-Si core, as shown by silanide-like reactivity towards halosilane electrophiles and the CH-insertion of phenylacetylene. Moreover, we report an alumanyl silanide with a sequestered sodium cation. Cleavage of the Si-Na bond by [2.2.2]cryptand increases the double bond character of the Al-Si core to produce an anion with high aluminata-silene (-Al=Si) character.

Vicinal Vinylation of Boron-Doped Acenes via Heck Coupling

Silylated and halogenated benzenes 1,2-(Me3Si)2-4,5-X2-C6H2 [X = Br (3), I (4)] are versatile synthetic building blocks. 3 was prepared from known 1,2-(Me3Si)2-4,5-Cl2-C6H2 via C-Cl borylation/bromodeboronation; CuI-catalyzed Br/I exchange on 3 affords 4. 3 or 4 and BBr3 yield 9,10-dibromo-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracenes (DBAs) 7 or 8. The B centers were protected with mesityl (Mes; 9, 10) or 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl (FMes; 11, 12) groups. Heck coupling of 9 and styrene/2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene furnishes the two tetravinyl-substituted green/blue emitters 13/14.

Brominated [20]silafulleranes: pushing the limits of steric loading

Starting from the perhydrogenated silafullerane [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂H₈], treatment with BBr₃ leads to partially and exhaustively brominated clusters, [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiBr₂H)₁₂Br₈] (120 eq. BBr₃, room temperature, 30 min) and [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiBr₃)₁₂Br₈] (300 eq. BBr₃, 130 °C, 3 d). Perbromination is accompanied by a massively increased steric strain on the cluster surface, which explains why our approach achieves regioselective derivatization of the Si₃₂ framework when mild conditions are maintained. Partial Br/H exchange on [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiBr₂H)₁₂Br₈] (30 eq. iBu₂AlH, room temperature, 16 h) affords [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂Br₈].

Synthesis, bridgehead functionalization, and photoisomerization of 9,10-diboratatriptycene dianions

9,10-Diboratatriptycene salts M2[RB(μ-C6H4)3BR] (R = H, Me; M+ = Li+, K+, [n-Bu4N]+) have been synthesized via [4 + 2] cycloaddition between doubly reduced 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracenes M2[DBA] and benzyne, generated in situ from C6H5F and C6H5Li or LiN(i-Pr)2. [HB(μ-C6H4)3BH]2- reacts with CH2Cl2 to form quantitatively the bridgehead-derivatized [ClB(μ-C6H4)3BCl]2-, while twofold H- abstraction with B(C6F5)3 in the presence of SMe2 leads cleanly to the diadduct (Me2S)B(μ-C6H4)3B(SMe2). Photoisomerization of K2[HB(μ-C6H4)3BH] (THF, medium-pressure Hg lamp) provides facile access to diborabenzo[a]fluoranthenes, a little explored form of boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. According to DFT calculations, the underlying reaction mechanism consists of three main steps: (i) photoinduced di-π-borate rearrangement, (ii) "walk reaction" of a BH unit, and (iii) boryl anion-like C-H activation.

Regioselective Derivatization of Silylated [20]Silafulleranes

Silafulleranes with endohedral Cl^- ions are a unique, scarcely explored class of structurally well-defined silicon clusters and host-guest complexes. Herein, we report regioselective derivatization reactions on the siladodecahedrane [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiCl₃)₁₂Cl₈] ([nBu₄N][1]), which has its cluster surface decorated with 12 SiCl₃ and 8 Cl substituents in perfect T_h symmetry. The room-temperature reaction of [nBu₄N][1] with excess iBu₂AlH in ortho-difluorobenzene (oDFB) furnishes perhydrogenated [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂H₈] ([nBu₄N][2]) in 50% yield; the non-pyrophoric [2]^- is the largest structurally authenticated (by X-ray diffraction) hydridosilane known to date. A simple switch from pure oDFB to an oDFB/Et₂O solvent mixture suppresses core hydrogenation and results in the formation of [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂Cl₈] ([nBu₄N][3]). In addition to the exhaustive Cl/H exchange at all 44 Si-Cl bonds of [1]^- and the regioselective 36-fold silyl group hydrogenation, we achieved the simultaneous introduction of Me substituents at all 8 SiCl vertices along with the conversion of all 12 SiCl₃ to SiH₃ groups by treating [nBu₄N][1] with Me₂AlH/Me₃Al in oDFB ([nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂Me₈], [nBu₄N][4]; 73%). Quantum-chemical free-energy calculations find an S_N2-Si-type hydrogenation of the exohedral SiCl₃ moieties in [1]^- (trigonal-bipyramidal intermediate) slightly preferred over metathesis-like S_Ni-Si substitutions (four-membered transition state). Cage hydrogenation likely occurs via S_Ni-Si processes. The experimentally demonstrated influence of an Et₂O co-solvent, which drastically increases the respective reaction barriers, is attributed to the increased stability of the resulting iBu₂AlH-OEt₂ adduct and its higher steric bulk compared to free iBu₂AlH.

Biocatalytic Synthesis of Homochiral 2-Hydroxy-4-butyrolactone Derivatives by Tandem Aldol Addition and Carbonyl Reduction

Chiral 2-hydroxy acids and 2-hydroxy-4-butyrolactone derivatives are structural motifs often found in fine and commodity chemicals. Here, we report a tandem biocatalytic stereodivergent route for the preparation of these compounds using three stereoselective aldolases and two stereocomplementary ketoreductases using simple and achiral starting materials. The strategy comprises (i) aldol addition reaction of 2-oxoacids to aldehydes using two aldolases from E. coli, 3-methyl-2-oxobutanoate hydroxymethyltransferase (KPHMT _Ecoli ), 2-keto-3-deoxy-l-rhamnonate aldolase (YfaU _Ecoli ), and trans-o-hydroxybenzylidene pyruvate hydratase-aldolase from Pseudomonas putida (HBPA _Pputida ) and (ii) subsequent 2-oxogroup reduction of the aldol adduct by ketopantoate reductase from E. coli (KPR _Ecoli ) and a Δ¹-piperidine-2-carboxylate/Δ¹-pyrroline-2-carboxylate reductase from Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DSM 50315 (DpkA _Psyrin ) with uncovered promiscuous ketoreductase activity. A total of 29 structurally diverse compounds were prepared: both enantiomers of 2-hydroxy-4-butyrolactone (>99% ee), 21 2-hydroxy-3-substituted-4-butyrolactones with the (2R,3S), (2S,3S), (2R,3R), or (2S,3R) configuration (from 60:40 to 98:2 dr), and 6 2-hydroxy-4-substituted-4-butyrolactones with the (2S,4R) configuration (from 87:13 to 98:2 dr). Conversions of aldol adducts varied from 32 to 98%, while quantitative conversions were achieved by both ketoreductases, with global isolated yields between 20 and 45% for most of the examples. One-pot one-step cascade reactions were successfully conducted achieving isolated yields from 30 to 57%.

Crystal structure of [tBuMgCl]2[MgCl2(Et2O)2]2

The title compound, di-μ3-chlorido-tetra-μ2-chlorido-tetrakis(diethyl ether-κO)bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)tetramagnesium, [Mg4(C4H9)2Cl6(C4H10O)4], features an Mg4Cl6 open-cube cluster. The two four-coordinate Mg2+ ions show an almost tetrahedral coordination, whereas the two six-coordinate Mg2+ ions have their ligands in an octahedral environment. The Mg—Cl bond lengths differ depending on the coordination number (2 or 3) of the bridging μ-Cl− ligands. There are few comparable structures deposited in the Cambridge Structural Database.

Group IV heteroadamantanes: synthesis of Si6Sn4 and site-selective derivatization of Si6Ge4

The mixed heteroadamantanes Si₆Ge₄ and Si₆Sn₄ are readily accessible from Me₂ECl₂/Si₂Cl₆/cat. Cl^- (4 × EMe₂, 2 × SiCl₂, 4 × Si-SiCl₃ vertices; E = Ge, Sn). Different from Si₆Ge₄, two skeletal isomers are formed in the case of Si₆Sn₄. Site-selective SiCl₃-methylation of Si₆Ge₄ was achieved, leaving the SiCl₂ groups untouched.

Design of Aurone-Based Dual-State Emissive (DSE) Fluorophores

The development of dual-state emissive (DSE) fluorophores, i. e. organic molecules showing balanced emission in both solution and as molecular solids, has recently become an emerging approach in material science, biology, sensing, and optoelectronics. However, the majority of existing DSE fluorophores represents structural modifications of the scaffolds known for their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, e. g., tetraphenylethylenes (TFE), triphenylamines (TFA), and others. In this study, we introduce aurones as an easily accessible scaffold for the construction of DSE fluorophores and describe the main design principles allowing to achieve the balanced emission in both solution and solid state. Herein, we present the solid-state fluorescence in a systematic series of aurone derivatives for the first time. We propose that the newly found DSE properties of aurones in combination with their established biological activity can be applied efficiently in biomedical studies and diagnostic tools.

(BO)2 -Doped Tetrathia[7]helicene: A Configurationally Stable Blue Emitter

Helicenes combine two central themes in chemistry: extended π-conjugation and chirality. Hetero-atom doping preserves both characteristics and allows modulation of the electronic structure of a helicene. Herein, we report the (BO)₂ -doped tetrathia[7]helicene 1, which was prepared from 2-methoxy-3,3'-bithiophene in four steps. 1 is formally derived by substituting two (Mes)B-O moieties in place of (H)C=C(H) fragments in two benzene rings of the parent tetrathia[7]helicene. X-ray crystallography revealed a dihedral angle of 50.26(9)° between the two terminal thiophene rings. The (P)-/(M)-1 enantiomers were separated by chiral HPLC and are configurationally stable at room temperature. The experimentally determined enantiomerization barrier of 27.4±0.1 kcal mol^-1 is lower than that of tetrathia[7]helicene (39.4±0.1 kcal mol^-1 ). The circular dichroism spectra of (P)- and (M)-1 show a perfect mirror-image relationship. 1 is a blue emitter (λ_em =411 nm) with a photoluminescence quantum efficiency of Φ_PL =6 % (cf. tetrathia[7]helicene: λ_em ≈405 nm, Φ_PL =5 %).

Multifaceted behavior of a doubly reduced arylborane in B-H-bond activation and hydroboration catalysis

Alkali-metal salts of 9,10-dimethyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthrancene (M₂[DBA-Me₂]; M⁺ = Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺) activate the H-B bond of pinacolborane (HBpin) in THF already at room temperature. For M⁺ = Na⁺, K⁺, the addition products M₂[4] are formed, which contain one new H-B and one new B-Bpin bond; for M⁺ = Li⁺, the H^- ion is instantaneously transferred from the DBA-Me₂ unit to another equivalent of HBpin to afford Li[5]. Although Li[5] might commonly be considered a [Bpin]^- adduct of neutral DBA-Me₂, it donates a [Bpin]⁺ cation to Li[SiPh₃], generating the silyl borane Ph₃Si-Bpin; Li₂[DBA-Me₂] with an aromatic central B₂C₄ ring acts as the leaving group. Furthermore, Li₂[DBA-Me₂] catalyzes the hydroboration of various unsaturated substrates with HBpin in THF. Quantum-chemical calculations complemented by in situ NMR spectroscopy revealed two different mechanistic scenarios that are governed by the steric demand of the substrate used: in the case of the bulky Ph(H)C[double bond, length as m-dash]NtBu, the reaction requires elevated temperatures of 100 °C, starts with H-Bpin activation which subsequently generates Li[BH₄], so that the mechanism eventually turns into "hidden borohydride catalysis". Ph(H)C[double bond, length as m-dash]NPh, Ph₂C[double bond, length as m-dash]O, Ph₂C[double bond, length as m-dash]CH₂, and iPrN[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]NiPr undergo hydroboration already at room temperature. Here, the active hydroboration catalyst is the [4 + 2] cycloadduct between the respective substrate and Li₂[DBA-Me₂]: in the key step, attack of HBpin on the bridging unit opens the bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene scaffold and gives the activated HBpin adduct of the Lewis-basic moiety that was previously coordinated to the DBA-B atom.

A Hydride-Substituted Homoleptic Silylborate: How Similar is it to its Diborane(6)-Dianion Isostere?

The B-nucleophilic 9H-9-borafluorene dianion reacts with 9-chloro-9-silafluorene to afford air- and moisture-stable silylborate salts M[Ar₂ (H)B-Si(H)Ar₂ ] (M[HBSiH], M=Li, Na). Li[HBSiH] and Me₃ SiCl give the B-pyridine adduct Ar₂ (py)B-Si(H)Ar₂ ((py)BSiH) or the chlorosilane Li[Ar₂ (H)B-Si(Cl)Ar₂ ] (Li[HBSiCl]) in C₆ H₆ -pyridine or THF. In both cases, the first step is H^- abstraction at the B center. The resulting free borane subsequently binds a py or thf ligand. While the py adduct is stable at room temperature, the thf adduct undergoes a 1,2-H shift via the cyclic B(μ-H)Si intermediate BHSi, which is afterwards attacked at the Si atom by a Cl^- ion to give Li[HBSiCl]. DFT calculations were employed to support the proposed reaction mechanism and to characterize the electronic structure of BHSi. Treatment of Li[HBSiCl] with the N-heterocyclic carbene IMe introduces the neutral donor at the Si atom and leads to Ar₂ (H)B-Si(IMe)Ar₂ (HBSi(IMe)), a donor-acceptor-stabilized silylene.

Charge-Transfer Transitions Govern the Reactivity and Photophysics of Vicinally Diphosphanyl-Substituted Diborapentacenes

2,3-Difluoro-5,14-dihydro-5,14-diborapentacene (DBP) was endowed with two vicinal Ph₂ P groups by an S_N Ar reaction at both CF sites using Ph₂ PSiMe₃ . Computations reveal the ambipolar product P to undergo P-to-B charge transfer under ambient light irradiation. Consequently, P is prone to photooxidation by air, yielding the Ph₂ P(O) species PO. With S₈ or [Me₃ O][BF₄ ], P furnishes the Ph₂ P(S) or Ph₂ P(Me)⁺ derivatives PS or [PMe][BF₄ ]₂ . Along the series P, PO, PS, and [PMe][BF₄ ]₂ , the redox potentials shift anodically from E_1/2 =-1.89 V to -1.02 V (CH₂ Cl₂ ). Thus, derivatization of the Ph₂ P group allows late-stage modulation of the LUMO-energy level of the DBP. Derivatization also influences the emission properties of the compounds, as PO shows green (521 nm) and [PMe][BF₄ ]₂ red (622 nm) fluorescence in C₆ H₆ , while P and PS are dark. With CuBr and AgBr, P forms dimeric [M(μ-Br)]₂ complexes [PCu]₂ and [PAg]₂ , which show pronounced metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), making P a promising ligand for photocatalysts.

Mixed-Substituted Single-Source Precursors for Si1-xGex Thin Film Deposition

A series of new mixed-substituted heteronuclear precursors with preformed Si-Ge bonds has been synthesized via a two-step synthesis protocol. The molecular sources combine convenient handling with sufficient thermal lability to provide access to group IV alloys with low carbon content. Differences in the molecule-material conversion by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques are described and traced back to the molecular design. This study illustrates the possibility of tailoring the physical and chemical properties of single-source precursors for their application in the CVD of Si_1-xGe_x coatings. Moreover, partial crystallization of the Si_1-xGe_x has been achieved by Ga metal-supported CVD growth, which demonstrated the potential of the presented precursor class for the synthesis of crystalline group IV alloys.

Late-stage derivatization of a (B,O)2-doped perylene

Regioselective di- and tetrabrominations of the (B,O)₂-perylene 1 afford derivatives 2-4. Despite their poor solubility, 2 and 4 could be used in Stille-type coupling reactions to introduce two CCMe (5) or four CC(p-C₆H₄tBu) substituents (6), respectively. The alkynylated derivatives show blue-green photoluminescence with appreciable quantum efficiencies.

Exploring Structure-Property Relations of B,S-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons through the Trinity of Synthesis, Spectroscopy, and Theory

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are prominent lead structures for organic optoelectronic materials. This work describes the synthesis of three B,S-doped PAHs with heptacene-type scaffolds via nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions between fluorinated arylborane precursors and 1,2-(Me₃SiS)₂C₆H₄/1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (72-92% yield). All compounds contain tricoordinate B atoms at their 7,16-positions, kinetically protected by mesityl (Mes) substituents. PAHs 1/2 feature two/four S atoms at their 5,18-/5,9,14,18-positions; PAH 3 is a 6,8,15,17-tetrafluoro derivative of 2. For comparison, we also prepared the skewed naphtho[2,3-c]pentaphene-type isomer 4. The simultaneous presence of electron-accepting B atoms and electron-donating S atoms results in a redox-ambiphilic behavior; the radical cations [1^•]⁺ and [2^•]⁺ were characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Several low-lying charge-transfer states exist, some of which (especially S-to-B and Mes-to-B transitions) compete on the excited-state potential-energy surface. Consistent with the calculated state characters and oscillator strengths, this competition results in a spread of fluorescence quantum yields (2-27%). The optoelectronic properties of 1 change drastically upon addition of Ag⁺ ions: while the color of 1 in CH₂Cl₂ changes bathochromically from yellow to red (λ_max from 463 to 486 nm; -0.13 eV), the emission band shifts hypsochromically from 606 to 545 nm (+0.23 eV), and the fluorescence quantum yield increases from 12 to 43%. According to titration experiments, higher order adducts [Ag_n1_m]ⁿ⁺ are formed. As a suitable system for modeling Ag⁺ complexation, our calculations predict a dimer structure (n = m = 2) with Ag₂S₄ core, approximately linear S-Ag-S fragments, and Ag-Ag interaction. The computed optoelectronic properties of [Ag₂1₂]²⁺ agree well with the experimentally observed ones.

Synthesis and crystal structure of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-bis(4-methoxybenzyl)-1,3-diazinan-5-ol

The title compound resulted from the condensation reaction between 1,3-bis­{[(4-meth­oxy­phen­yl)meth­yl]amino}­propan-2-ol and 2-hy­droxy­benzaldehyde in CH₃OH. The structure exhibits disorder of one of the 4-meth­oxy­benzyl groups, the hy­droxy group bonded to the 1,3-diazinan ring, and the methyl group of the meth­oxy residue. The crystal packing is sustained by C—H⋯O and O—H⋯π inter­actions, giving rise to infinite chains running along the b-axis direction.

The redetermined structure of 2-(2-hy­droxy­phen­yl)-1,3-bis­(4-meth­oxy­benz­yl)-1,3-diazinan-5-ol, C₂₆H₃₀N₂O₄, at 173 K has ortho­rhom­bic (Pbca) symmetry. It was previously described by Bolte et al. [ Private Communication (refcode EWICEV). CCDC, Cambridge, England]. The title compound resulted from the condensation reaction between 1,3-bis­{[(4-meth­oxy­phen­yl)meth­yl]amino}­propan-2-ol and 2-hy­droxy­benzaldehyde in CH₃OH. The structure exhibits disorder. One of the 4-meth­oxy­benzyl groups, the hy­droxy group bonded to the 1,3-diazinan ring, and the methyl group of the meth­oxy residue are disordered over two orientations, with occupancies of 0.807 (3)/0.193 (3), 0.642 (5)/0.358 (5), and 0.82 (4)/0.18 (4), respectively. The dihedral angles between the mean planes of the central 1,3-diazinan-5-ol and the 4-meth­oxy­phenyl rings (both occupancy components of the disordered ring) are 88.65 (13), 85.79 (14) and 83.4 (7)°. The crystal packing is sustained by C—H⋯O and O—H⋯π inter­actions, giving rise to infinite chains running along the b-axis direction.

Oligomerization of an ansa-ferrocene with pyrazabole bridge

Ansa-ferrocenes with pyrazabole bridges are chemically robust entities and therefore suitable building blocks for the synthesis of rigid-rod polymers that combine redox-active Fe(II) centers and beltene-like  faces. The specific monomers we developed bear OEt groups at both tetracoordinated boron atoms (for solubility reasons) and ethynyl substituents at the 4-positions of the two pyrazole rings. Polymerization was accomplished by a condensation reaction with 1,4-diiodobenzene using a Sonogashira-Hagihara-type protocol. Thereby, oligomers with a number-average molecular weight of Mn = 7.6 kDa and dispersity of Ð = 1.55 were obtained, suggesting an average chain length of about 14 repeating units based on gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis in THF relative to narrow polystyrene standards. The molecular-weight determination was complemented by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and (heteronuclear) NMR spectroscopy to verify the intact pyrazabole monomer repeat units and the nature of the end-groups. The oligomers were further characterized by UV−vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, which demonstrated the successful synthesis of a new class of redox-active materials.

First hydrogen-bonded adduct of sterically hindered 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (TBMP) with 1,3,6,8-tetraazatricyclo[4.4.1.13,8]dodecane (TATD) via coupling of classical hydrogen bonds and C—H...π non-covalent interactions

Hydrogen bonding links the donor alcohol functional groups of two 2-tert-butyl-4-methyl­phenol mol­ecules to the central acceptor polyamine aminal cage TATD yielding the three mol­ecule adduct, half of which comprises the asymmetric unit in this crystal structure.

The title compound, C₈H₁₆N₄·2C₁₁H₁₆O, was synthesized from the corres­ponding sterically crowded phenol by treatment with the aminal cage polyamine. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural analysis revealed the three-mol­ecule aggregate to crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2/c with one half of a 1,3,6,8-tetra­aztri­cyclo­[4.4.1.1^3,8]dodecane (TATD) mol­ecule and one 2-tert-butyl-4-methyl­phenol mol­ecule per asymmetric unit. The crystal structure features inter­molecular O—H⋯N and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, as well as inter­molecular C—H⋯π inter­actions.

Nucleophilic borylation of fluorobenzenes with reduced arylboranes

Two challenging but rewarding topics in chemical synthesis are C-F-bond activation and the development of B-centered nucleophiles. We have now tackled both subjects simultaneously by forming aryl-B bonds via S_NAr-type reactions on fluorobenzenes under mild conditions using Na₂[FluBBFlu], Li₂[HBFlu], and Li₂[Me₂DBA] (BFlu = 9-borafluorenyl, Me₂DBA = 9,10-dimethyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracene).

Subvalent mixed SixGey oligomers: (Cl3Si)4Ge and Cl2(Me2EtN)SiGe(SiCl3)2

(Cl₃Si)₄Ge (1; 91%) is accessible from GeCl₄, the Si₂Cl₆/[nBu₄N]Cl silylation system, and excess SiCl₄. A key intermediate step involves Cl^- sequestration with AlCl₃ in the course of the reaction between the first-formed germanide [(Cl₃Si)₃Ge]^- and SiCl₄. The related adduct Cl₂(Me₂EtN)SiGe(SiCl₃)₂ (2; quantitative conversion) was prepared either by amine-induced cleavage of 1 or by a bottom-up synthesis starting from GeCl₄ and Si₂Cl₆.

Oxyenamides as Versatile Building Blocks for a Highly Stereoselective One-Pot Synthesis of the 1,3-Diamino-2-ol-Scaffold Containing Three Continuous Stereocenters

A highly diastereoselective one-pot synthesis of the 1,3-diamino-2-alcohol unit bearing three continuous stereocenters is described. This method utilizes 2-oxyenamides as a novel type of building block for the rapid assembly of the 1,3-diamine scaffold containing an additional stereogenic oxygen functionality at the C2 position. A stereoselective preparation of the required (Z)-oxyenamides is reported as well.

The power of trichlorosilylation: isolable trisilylated allyl anions, allyl radicals, and allenyl anions

Treatment of hexachloropropene (Cl₂C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C(Cl)–CCl₃) with Si₂Cl₆ and [nBu₄N]Cl (1 : 4 : 1) in CH₂Cl₂ results in a quantitative conversion to the trisilylated, dichlorinated allyl anion salt [nBu₄N][Cl₂CC(SiCl₃)–C(SiCl₃)₂] ([nBu₄N][1]). Tetrachloroallene Cl₂CCCCl₂ was identified as the first intermediate of the reaction cascade. In the solid state, [1]⁻ adopts approximate C_s symmetry with a dihedral angle between the planes running through the olefinic and carbanionic fragments of [1]⁻ of CC–Si//Si–C–Si = 78.3(1)°. One-electron oxidation of [nBu₄N][1] with SbCl₅ furnishes the distillable blue radical 1˙. The neutral propene Cl₂CC(SiCl₃)–C(SiCl₃)₂H (2) was obtained by (i) protonation of [1]⁻ with HOSO₂CF₃ (HOTf) or (ii) H-atom transfer to 1˙ from 1,4-cyclohexadiene. Quantitative transformation of all three SiCl₃ substituents in 2 to Si(OMe)₃ (2^OMe) or SiMe₃ (2^Me) substituents was achieved by using MeOH/NMe₂Et or MeMgBr in CH₂Cl₂ or THF, respectively. Upon addition of 2 equiv. of tBuLi, 2^Me underwent deprotonation with subsequent LiCl elimination, 1,2-SiMe₃ migration and Cl/Li exchange to afford the allenyl lithium compound Me₃Si(Li)CCC(SiMe₃)₂ (Li[4]), which is an efficient building block for the introduction of Me, SiMe₃, or SnMe₃ (5) groups. The trisilylated, monochlorinated allene Cl₃Si(Cl)CCC(SiCl₃)₂ (6), was obtained from [nBu₄N][1] through Cl⁻-ion abstraction with AlCl₃ and rearrangement in CH₂Cl₂ (1˙ forms as a minor side product, likely because the system AlCl₃/CH₂Cl₂ can also act as a one-electron oxidant).

A Chemiluminescent Tetraaryl Diborane(4) Tetraanion

Two subvalent, redox-active diborane(4) anions, [3]4- and [3]2- , carrying exceptionally high negative charge densities are reported: Reduction of 9-methoxy-9-borafluorene with Li granules without stirring leads to the crystallization of the B(sp3 )-B(sp2 ) diborane(5) anion salt Li[5]. [5]- contains a 2,2'-biphenyldiyl-bridged B-B core, a chelating 2,2'-biphenyldiyl moiety, and a MeO substituent. Reduction of Li[5] with Na metal gives the Na+ salt of the tetraanion [3]4- in which two doubly reduced 9-borafluorenyl fragments are linked via a B-B single bond. Comproportionation of Li[5] and Na4 [3] quantitatively furnishes the diborane(4) dianion salt Na2 [3], the doubly boron-doped congener of 9,9'-bis(fluorenylidene). Under acid catalysis, Na2 [3] undergoes a formal Stone-Wales rearrangement to yield a dibenzo[g,p]chrysene derivative with B=B core. Na2 [3] shows boron-centered nucleophilicity toward n-butyl chloride. Na4 [3] produces bright blue chemiluminescence when exposed to air.

Selective One-Pot Syntheses of Mixed Silicon-Germanium Heteroadamantane Clusters

Si x Ge y alloys are emerging materials for modern semiconductor technology. Well-defined model systems of the bulk structures aid in understanding their intrinsic characteristics. Three such model clusters have now been realized in the form of the Si x Ge y heteroadamantanes [0] , [1] , and [2] via selective one-pot syntheses starting from Me 2 GeCl 2 , Si 2 Cl 6 , and [nBu 4 N]Cl. Compound [0] contains 6 GeMe 2 and 4 SiSiCl 3 vertices, while one and two of the GeMe 2 groups are replaced by SiCl 2 moieties in compounds [1] and [2] , respectively. Chloride ion-mediated rearrangement quantitatively converts [2] into [1] at room temperature and finally into [0] at 60 °C, which is not only remarkable in view of the rigidity of these cage structures but also sheds light on the assembly mechanism.

[Cl@Si20H20]-: Parent Siladodecahedrane with Endohedral Chloride Ion

Fullerenes and diamondoids are at the core of nanoscience. Comparable monodisperse silicon analogues are scarce. Herein, we report the synthesis of the parent siladodecahedrane, which represents the largest Platonic solid. It shares its pattern of pentagonal faces with the smallest fullerene, C₂₀, and its saturated, H-terminated skeleton with diamondoids. Similar to endofullerenes, the silicon cage encapsulates a chloride ion ([Cl@Si₂₀H₂₀]^-); similar to diamondoids, its Si-H termini offer a wealth of opportunities for further functionalization. Mere treatment with chloromethanes leads to the perchlorinated cluster [Cl@Si₂₀Cl₂₀]^-. Both compounds were characterized by mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. The experimentally determined ³⁵Cl resonances of the endohedral chloride ions are particularly diagnostic to probe the Cl^- → Si₂₀ interaction strength as a function of the different surface substituents, as we have proven by high-level computational analyses.

Synthesis and structure of the λ 6Si-silicate [Cs(18-crown-6)]2[Si(OSO2CH3)6]

The λ 6Si-silicate [Cs(18-crown-6)]2[Si(OSO2CH3)6] (1) was synthesized by treatment of Si2Cl6 with Cs[OSO2CH3] in the presence of 18-crown-6. Compound 1 is the first example of a λ 6Si-silicate with a methanesulfonate ligand. It was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The solid-state structure of 1 consists of discrete [Si(OSO2CH3)6]2– anions and two [Cs(18-crown-6)]+ cations (triclinic space group, P 1 ¯ $P\overline{1}$ , Z = 1).

B-B vs. B-H Bond Activation in a (μ-Hydrido)diborane(4) Anion upon Cycloaddition with CO2 , Isocyanates, or Carbodiimides

The intriguing (μ‐hydrido)diboranes(4) with their prominent pristine representative [B₂H₅]⁻ have mainly been studied theoretically. We now describe the behavior of the planarized tetraaryl (μ‐hydrido)diborane(4) anion [1H]⁻ in cycloaddition reactions with the homologous series of heterocumulenes CO₂, iPrNCO, and iPrNCNiPr. We show that a C=O bond of CO₂ selectively activates the B−B bond of [1H]⁻, while the μ‐H ligand is left untouched ([2H]⁻). The carbodiimide iPrNCNiPr, in contrast, neglects the B−B bond and rather adds the B‐bonded H⁻ ion to its central C atom to generate a formamidinate bridge across the B₂ pair ([3]⁻). As a hybrid, the isocyanate iPrNCO combines the reactivity patterns of both its congeners and gives two products: one of them ([4H]⁻) is related to [2H]⁻, the other ([5]⁻) is an analog of [3]⁻. We finally propose a mechanistic scenario that rationalizes the individual reaction outcomes and combines them to a coherent picture of B–B vs. B–H bond activation.

Supramolecular structures of NiII and CuII with the sterically demanding Schiff base dyes driven by cooperative action of preagostic and other non-covalent interactions

This work reports on synthesis and extensive experimental and theoretical investigations on photophysical, structural and thermal properties of the NiII and CuII discrete mononuclear homoleptic complexes [Ni(L I,II)2] and [Cu(L I,II)2] fabricated from the Schiff base dyes o-HOC6H4-CH=N-cyclo-C6H11 (HL I) and o-HOC10H6-CH=N-cyclo-C6H11 (HL II), containing the sterically crowding cyclo-hexyl units. The six-membered metallocycles adopt a clearly defined envelope conformation in [Ni(L II)2], while they are much more planar in the structures of [Ni(L I)2] and [Cu(L I,II)2]. It has been demonstrated by in-depth bonding analyses based on the ETS-NOCV and Interacting Quantum Atoms energy-decomposition schemes that application of the bulky substituents, containing several C-H groups, has led to the formation of a set of classical and unintuitive intra- and inter-molecular interactions. All together they are responsible for the high stability of [Ni(L I,II)2] and [Cu(L I,II)2]. More specifically, London dispersion dominated intramolecular C-H⋯O, C-H⋯N and C-H⋯H-C hydrogen bonds are recognized and, importantly, the attractive, chiefly the Coulomb driven, preagostic (not repulsive anagostic) C-H⋯Ni/Cu interactions have been discovered despite their relatively long distances (∼2.8-3.1 Å). All the complexes are further stabilized by the extremely efficient intermolecular C-H⋯π(benzene) and C-H⋯π(chelate) interactions, where both the charge-delocalization and London dispersion constituents appear to be crucial for the crystal packing of the obtained complexes. All the complexes were found to be photoluminescent in CH2Cl2, with [Cu(L II)2] exhibiting the most pronounced emission - the time-dependent density-functional-theory computations revealed that it is mostly caused by metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transitions.

Synthesis of γ-Hydroxy-α-amino Acid Derivatives by Enzymatic Tandem Aldol Addition-Transamination Reactions

Three enzymatic routes toward γ-hydroxy-α-amino acids by tandem aldol addition–transamination one-pot two-step reactions are reported. The approaches feature an enantioselective aldol addition of pyruvate to various nonaromatic aldehydes catalyzed by trans-o-hydroxybenzylidene pyruvate hydratase-aldolase (HBPA) from Pseudomonas putida. This affords chiral 4-hydroxy-2-oxo acids, which were subsequently enantioselectively aminated using S-selective transaminases. Three transamination processes were investigated involving different amine donors and transaminases: (i) l-Ala as an amine donor with pyruvate recycling, (ii) a benzylamine donor using benzaldehyde lyase from Pseudomonas fluorescens Biovar I (BAL) to transform the benzaldehyde formed into benzoin, minimizing equilibrium limitations, and (iii) l-Glu as an amine donor with a double cascade comprising branched-chain α-amino acid aminotransferase (BCAT) and aspartate amino transferase (AspAT), both from E. coli, using l-Asp as a substrate to regenerate l-Glu. The γ-hydroxy-α-amino acids thus obtained were transformed into chiral α-amino-γ-butyrolactones, structural motifs found in many biologically active compounds and valuable intermediates for the synthesis of pharmaceutical agents.

First crystal structure of a Pigment Red 52 compound: DMSO solvate hydrate of the monosodium salt

Pigment Red 52, Na2[C18H11ClN2O6S], is an industrially produced hydrazone-laked pigment. It serves as an inter-mediate in the synthesis of the corresponding Ca2+ and Mn2+ salts, which are used commercially for printing inks and lacquers. Hitherto, no crystal structure of any salt of Pigment Red 52 is known. Now, single crystals have been obtained of a dimethyl sulfoxide solvate hydrate of the monosodium salt of Pigment Red 52, namely, monosodium 2-[2-(3-carb-oxy-2-oxo-1,2-di-hydro-naphthalen-1-yl-idene)hydrazin-1-yl]-5-chloro-4-methyl-benz-ene-sulfonate dimethyl sulfoxide monosolvate monohydrate, Na+·C18H12ClN2O6S-·H2O·C2H6OS, obtained from in-house synthesized Pigment Red 52. The crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 173 K. In this monosodium salt, the SO3 - group is deprotonated, whereas the COOH group is protonated. The residues form chains via ionic inter-actions and hydrogen bonds. The chains are arranged in polar/non-polar double layers.

One tool to bring them all: Au-catalyzed synthesis of B,O- and B,N-doped PAHs from boronic and borinic acids

The isoelectronic replacement of C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds with ⁻BN⁺ bonds in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a widely used tool to prepare novel optoelectronic materials. Far less well explored are corresponding B,O-doped PAHs, although they have a similarly high application potential. We herein report on the modular synthesis of B,N- and B,O-doped PAHs through the [Au(PPh₃)NTf₂]-catalyzed 6-endo-dig cyclization of BN–H and BO–H bonds across suitably positioned C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds in the key step. Readily available, easy-to-handle o-alkynylaryl boronic and borinic acids serve as starting materials, which are either cyclized directly or first converted into the corresponding aminoboranes and then cyclized. The reaction even tolerates bulky mesityl substituents on boron, which later kinetically protect the formed B,N/O-PAHs from hydrolysis or oxidation. Our approach is also applicable for the synthesis of rare doubly B,N/O-doped PAHs. Specifically, we prepared 1,2-B,E-naphthalenes and -anthracenes, 1,5-B₂-2,6-E₂-anthracenes (E = N, O) as well as B,O₂-containing and unprecedented B,N,O-containing phenalenyls. Selected examples of these compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography; their optoelectronic properties have been studied by cyclic voltammetry, electron spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. Using a new unsubstituted (B,O)₂-perylene as the substrate for late-stage functionalization, we finally show that the introduction of two pinacolatoboryl (Bpin) substituents is possible in high yield and with perfect regioselectivity via an Ir-catalyzed C–H borylation approach.

Singly and doubly B,E-doped PAHs were synthesized using a protocol that starts from easy-to-handle boronic and borinic acids and offers the possibility to choose between the preparation of B,O- and B,N-PAHs in the final reaction step.

Two salts of the 6,6-difluoro-6H-dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaborinin-6-ide anion with different cations

The crystal structures are reported of the 6,6-difluoro-6H-dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaborinin-6-ide (or 9,9-difluoro-10-oxa-9-boraphenanthren-9-ide) anion with two different cations, namely, potassium 6,6-difluoro-6H-dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaborinin-6-ide, K+·C12H8BF2O−, (II), featuring a polymeric structure, and bis(tetraphenylphosphonium) bis(6,6-difluoro-6H-dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaborinin-6-ide) acetonitrile trisolvate, 2C24H20P+·2C12H8BF2O−·3CH3CN, (III), which is composed of discrete cations, anions and acetonitrile solvent molecules linked by C—H...O, C—H...N and C—H...F hydrogen bonds. There are only minor differences in the geometrical parameters of the anions in these structures.

Biocatalytic Construction of Quaternary Centers by Aldol Addition of 3,3-Disubstituted 2-Oxoacid Derivatives to Aldehydes

The congested nature of quaternary carbons hinders their preparation, most notably when stereocontrol is required. Here we report a biocatalytic method for the creation of quaternary carbon centers with broad substrate scope, leading to different compound classes bearing this structural feature. The key step comprises the aldol addition of 3,3-disubstituted 2-oxoacids to aldehydes catalyzed by metal dependent 3-methyl-2-oxobutanoate hydroxymethyltransferase from E. coli (KPHMT) and variants thereof. The 3,3,3-trisubstituted 2-oxoacids thus produced were converted into 2-oxolactones and 3-hydroxy acids and directly to ulosonic acid derivatives, all bearing gem-dialkyl, gem-cycloalkyl, and spirocyclic quaternary centers. In addition, some of these reactions use a single enantiomer from racemic nucleophiles to afford stereopure quaternary carbons. The notable substrate tolerance and stereocontrol of these enzymes are indicative of their potential for the synthesis of structurally intricate molecules.
