Selective Host-Guest Interactions of a Transformable Coordination Capsule/Tube with Fullerenes

A fluorescent molecular capsule with a flexible polyaromatic shell for the detection of monoterpene compounds in water

A new molecular capsule with a flexible fluorescent shell was formed by the quantitative self-complementary assembly of amphiphilic, U-shaped polyaromatic subunits in water. The capsule can fully encapsulate a variety of non-fluorescent monoterpene compounds (e.g., menthone, menthol, and p-menthane) in the hydrophobic cavity and act as a fluorescent supramolecular probe for recognizing the structural identity of the analytes by emissive signals in water at room temperature.

Catenation and encapsulation induce distinct reconstitutions within a dynamic library of mixed-ligand Zn4L6 cages

Two new Zn4L6 cages composed of diamine subcomponents containing either naphthalene diimide (NDI) or porphyrin moieties are described. Their structural differences allow these cages to exhibit distinct interactions with different chemical stimuli, yielding different supramolecular products. The electron-poor NDI subunits of the first cage were observed to thread through electron-rich aromatic crown-ether macrocycles, forming mechanically-interlocked species up to a [3]catenane, whereas the porphyrin ligands of the second cage interacted favourably with C70, causing it to be bound as a guest. When mixed, the two cages were observed to form a dynamic combinatorial library (DCL) of seven constitutionally distinct mixed-ligand Zn4L6 cages. The DCL was observed to reconstitute in opposing ways when treated with either the crown ether or C70: the electron-rich macrocycle templated the formation of heteroleptic catenanes, whereas C70 caused the DCL to self-sort into homoleptic structures.

Our Expedition in Linear Neutral Platinum-Acetylide Complexes: The Preparation of Micro/nanostructure Materials, Complicated Topologies, and Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

During the past few decades, the construction of various kinds of platinum-acetylide complexes has attracted considerable attention, because of their wide applications in photovoltaic cells, non-linear optics, and bio-imaging materials. Among these platinum-acetylide complexes, the linear neutral platinum-acetylide complexes, due to their attractive properties, such as well-defined linear geometry, synthetic accessibility, and intriguing photoproperties, have emerged as a rising star in this field. In this personal account, we will discuss how we entered the field of linear neutral platinum-acetylide chemistry and what we found in this field. The preparation of various types of linear neutral platinum-acetylide complexes and their applications in the areas of micro/nanostructure materials, complicated topologies, and dye-sensitized solar cells will be summarized in this account.

Mechanochemical Encapsulation of Fullerenes in Peptidic Containers Prepared by Dynamic Chiral Self-Sorting and Self-Assembly

Molecular capsules composed of amino acid or peptide derivatives connected to resorcin[4]arene scaffolds through acylhydrazone linkers have been synthesized using dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) and hydrogen-bond-based self-assembly. The dynamic character of the linkers and the preference of the peptides towards self-assembly into β-barrel-type motifs lead to the spontaneous amplification of formation of homochiral capsules from mixtures of different substrates. The capsules have cavities of around 800 Å(3) and exhibit good kinetic stability. Although they retain their dynamic character, which allows processes such as chiral self-sorting and chiral self-assembly to operate with high fidelity, guest complexation is hindered in solution. However, the quantitative complexation of even very large guests, such as fullerene C60 or C70 , is possible through the utilization of reversible covalent bonds or the application of mechanochemical methods. The NMR spectra show the influence of the chiral environment on the symmetry of the fullerene molecules, which results in the differentiation of diastereotopic carbon atoms for C70 , and the X-ray structures provide unique information on the modes of peptide-fullerene interactions.

Reversible Guest Uptake/Release by Redox-Controlled Assembly/Disassembly of a Coordination Cage

Controlling the guest expulsion process from a receptor is of critical importance in various fields. Several coordination cages have been recently designed for this purpose, based on various types of stimuli to induce the guest release. Herein, we report the first example of a redox-triggered process from a coordination cage. The latter integrates a cavity, the panels of which are based on the extended tetrathiafulvalene unit (exTTF). The unique combination of electronic and conformational features of this framework (i.e. high π-donating properties and drastic conformational changes upon oxidation) allows the reversible disassembly/reassembly of the redox-active cavity upon chemical oxidation/reduction, respectively. This cage is able to bind the three-dimensional B12 F12 (2-) anion in a 1:2 host/guest stoichiometry. The reversible redox-triggered disassembly of the cage could also be demonstrated in the case of the host-guest complex, offering a new option for guest-delivering control.

Tuning the depth of bowl-shaped phosphine hosts: capsule and pseudo-cage architectures in host-guest complexes with C60 fullerene

Bowl-shaped phosphine molecules, whose bowl geometry can be controlled by a variation of the axial substituent, were synthesized, and used as host molecules to encapsulate C60. Host molecules with relatively shallow bowls formed a chiral capsule, while hosts with deeper bowls formed an achiral pseudo-cage.

Preparation of Highly Fluorescent Host-Guest Complexes with Tunable Color upon Encapsulation

Unlike previous coordinative host-guest systems, highly emissive host-guest complexes (up to Φ(F) = 0.5) were successfully prepared upon encapsulation of various fluorescent dyes (e.g., BODIPY and coumarin derivatives) by a Pt(II)-linked coordination capsule in water. Picosecond time-resolved spectroscopy elucidates the photophysical behaviors of the obtained complexes. Notably, the emission color of the fluorescent guest within the capsule can be readily modulated upon pairwise encapsulation with planar aromatic molecules.

Mixed-metal metallocavitands: a new approach to tune their electrostatic potentials for controllable selectivity towards substituted benzene derivatives

We have successfully developed a new synthetic approach to modulate the electrostatic potentials of metallocavitands and thus their selective recognition towards substituted benzene derivatives via integrating two metal cations of different electronegativity into a self-assembled system.

A novel photo-responsive azobenzene-containing nanoring host for fullerene-guest facile encapsulation and release

Azobenzenes in particular have been proved to have a robust photo-response, in which their configuration can transform between the trans- and cis-form upon UV-visible irradiation. Accordingly, azobenzene-containing molecules are frequently applied in the design of the guests, involving so-called host-guest chemistry. In this paper, a novel photo-responsive nanoring host molecule ([4]AB) has been designed by introducing four azobenzene groups onto the ring, and interactions between the designed nanoring host and fullerenes C60 and C70 guests were investigated at both the M06-L/MIDI! as well as M06-2X/6-31G(d) level of theory. By analyzing the geometric characteristics and host-guest binding energies, it is revealed that the designed [4]AB with diameter ca. 13.4 Å is an ideal host molecule for the encapsulation of guests C60 and C70 fullerene. Meanwhile, inferred from UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, the guest C60 and C70 could be facilely released from the cavity of the [4]AB via configuration transformation between trans- and cis-form of the host under 474 and 506 nm photo-irradiation, respectively. Frontier orbital features, weak interaction regions, infrared spectroscopy and (1)H NMR spectra have also been theoretically simulated. The present work would provide a new strategy for facile reversible encapsulation and release of fullerene guest by a novel nanoring host.

Chloride triggered reversible switching from a metallosupramolecular [Pd2L4]4+ cage to a [Pd2L2Cl4] metallo-macrocycle with release of endo- and exo-hedrally bound guests

A metallosupramolecular [Pd₂L₄]⁴⁺ cage can be cleanly, and reversibly, converted into a [Pd₂L₂Cl₄] metallo-macrocycle upon addition or removal of chloride ions.

Supramolecular fluorescence enhancement via coordination-driven self-assembly in bis-picolylcalixarene blue-emitting M2L2Xn macrocycles

Photoactive macrocycles are obtained through coordination-driven self-assembly between calixarene L and Zn²⁺, Pd²⁺, Ag⁺, and Cd²⁺. Blue emission enhancement of L is observed upon assembly. M₂L₂X_n act as turn-off sensors for picric acid.

Molecular containers in complex chemical systems

This review discusses recent advances in the use of molecular containers in complex chemical systems, focusing on three aspects: host–guest behaviour, structural transformations and reactivity modulation.

Polyaromatic molecular tubes with a subnanometer pore and the guest-induced emission enhancement behavior

New polyaromatic molecular tubes with a subnanometer pore (0.8 nm) can bind one molecule of hydrocarbon guests in water with accompanying guest-induced emission enhancement (up to ∼3 times).

Polyaromatic nanocapsules displaying aggregation-induced enhanced emissions in water

V-shaped polyaromatic amphiphiles with phenanthrene or naphthalene rings spontaneously and quantitatively formed micelle-like nanocapsules in water at room temperature. In contrast to usual polyaromatic aggregates with weak fluorescent properties, the new capsules providing spherical polyaromatic shells with diameters of ∼2 nm show strong fluorescent emissions due to an aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) effect and moreover encapsulate a fluorescent coumarin dye to generate highly emissive host-guest composites.

Sponge-like molecular cage for purification of fullerenes

Since fullerenes are available in macroscopic quantities from fullerene soot, large efforts have been geared toward designing efficient strategies to obtain highly pure fullerenes, which can be subsequently applied in multiple research fields. Here we present a supramolecular nanocage synthesized by metal-directed self-assembly, which encapsulates fullerenes of different sizes. Direct experimental evidence is provided for the 1:1 encapsulation of C60, C70, C76, C78 and C84, and solid state structures for the host-guest adducts with C60 and C70 have been obtained using X-ray synchrotron radiation. Furthermore, we design a washing-based strategy to exclusively extract pure C60 from a solid sample of cage charged with a mixture of fullerenes. These results showcase an attractive methodology to selectively extract C60 from fullerene mixtures, providing a platform to design tuned cages for selective extraction of higher fullerenes. The solid-phase fullerene encapsulation and liberation represent a twist in host-guest chemistry for molecular nanocage structures.

A polyaromatic molecular tube that binds long hydrocarbons with high selectivity

Long hydrocarbon chains are essential components of biomolecules used for structure and function in living organisms. The selective recognition and effective binding of hydrocarbons within synthetic host compounds are problematic owing to their conformational flexibility and the lack of specific binding sites. Here we report a molecular tube with polyaromatic frameworks prepared by the Zincke cross-coupling reaction. The tube has a well-defined cylindrical cavity with a diameter and length of ~1 nm encircled by multiple anthracene panels and thereby binds long hydrocarbons containing branched methyl groups and/or unsaturated carbon-carbon double bonds (for example, heptamethylnonane, nervonic acid ester and squalene) with high selectivity in aqueous solutions.

An aqueous molecular tube with polyaromatic frameworks capable of binding fluorescent dyes

An aqueous polyaromatic tube binds two molecules of fluorescent dyes in water and the bound dye dimers exhibit unusual excimer-like emissions through efficient host–guest energy transfer.

An aqueous molecular tube composed of polyaromatic frameworks with peripheral hydrophilic groups was prepared. The new tube has a well-defined hydrophobic cavity with a diameter of ∼1 nm and quantitatively binds two molecules of fluorescent coumarin dyes in aqueous solutions. The bound coumarin dimers in a stacked fashion exhibit unusual excimer-like emissions in the confined space through efficient host–guest energy transfer.

Stoichiometrically controlled revocable self-assembled "spiro" versus quadruple-stranded "double-decker" type coordination cages

The simple combination of Pd(II) with the tris-monodentate ligand bis(pyridin-3-ylmethyl) pyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate, L, at ratios of 1:2 and 3:4 demonstrated the stoichiometrically controlled exclusive formation of the "spiro-type" Pd1L2 macrocycle, 1, and the quadruple-stranded Pd3L4 cage, 2, respectively. The architecture of 2 is elaborated with two compartments that can accommodate two units of fluoride, chloride, or bromide ions, one in each of the enclosures. However, the entry of iodide is altogether restricted. Complexes 1 and 2 are interconvertible under suitable conditions.
