Abstract
Enantioselective analysis of some pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment has the potential to reveal significant insights regarding the effectiveness of biotransformation processes. Furthermore, enantioselective analysis of chiral pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment may provide a useful historical record revealing the dominant source of (treated or untreated) wastewater contamination. This review of the recent scientific literature has identified only a handful of studies that have directly investigated these promising applications. However, a range of enantioselective analytical techniques are likely to be adaptable from those which have been developed within the pharmaceutical industry. These include direct enantioseparations of enantiomers on chiral stationary phases as well as indirect separations by achiral stationary phases after chiral derivatization to form pairs of physically distinguishable diastereomers. Further investigations of the patterns of enantiomeric fractionation of pharmaceuticals in wastewater and environmental samples will provide an increasingly solid understanding of the relationship between biotransformation processes and the often overlooked parameter of enantiomeric fraction.

Abstract
A CE assay for the simultaneous determination of charged and uncharged potential impurities (1S,2S-(+)-norpseudoephedrine, 1R,2S-(-)-norephedrine, phenylacetone and phenylacetone oxime) of dexamphetamine sulfate including the stereoisomer levoamphetamine was developed and validated. The optimized background electrolyte consisted of a 50 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 3.0, containing 80 mg/mL sulfobutylether-beta-CD and 25 mg/mL sulfated beta-CD. Separations were performed in 40.2/35 cm, 50 mum id fused-silica capillaries at a temperature of 20 degrees C and an applied voltage of -10 kV. 1R,2S-(-)-ephedrine was used as internal standard. The assay was validated in the range of 0.05-1.0% for the related substances and in the range of 0.05-5.0% for levoamphetamine. The LOD was 0.01-0.02% depending on the analyte. The assay also allowed the separation of the E,Z-stereoisomers of phenylacetone oxime. The effect of the degree of substitution of sulfobutylether-beta-CD was investigated. In commercial samples of dexamphetamine sulfate between 3.2 and 3.7% of levoamphetamine were found. Furthermore, phenylacetone and phenylacetone oxime could be observed at the LOD, indicating the synthetic origin of the investigated samples.

Abstract
The R- and S-configurations of barbiturates display differences in potency and biological activity. In this study, multivariate micellar electrokinetic chromatography-mass spectrometry (MEKC-MS) approach for the simultaneous analysis of three chiral barbiturates (mephobarbital, pentobarbital, and secobarbital) is developed using a polymeric chiral surfactant. After screening 11 amino acid polymeric surfactants, polysodium N-undecenoxycarbonyl-L-isoleucinate (poly-L-SUCIL) was found to be the best chiral selector. The multivariate central composite design (CCD) is used to optimize the chiral resolution, decrease the total analysis time, and improve the ESI-MS signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio. In the preliminary set of experiments, the ranges of the factors investigated in the multivariate approaches are determined. Next, the CCD design is conducted to determine the best overall chiral resolution with shortest possible run times. This optimization resulted in simultaneous enantioseparation in less than 32 min of all three barbiturates with 3-5 fold higher sensitivity by MS compared to UV detection. The adequacy of the multivariate model is validated by three replicate experimental runs at the predicted optimum conditions. The predicted results of MEKC-MS are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data for migration times, resolution, and S/N ratio. The optimized method provided good results in terms of linearity and recovery values of chiral barbiturates spiked in human serum after solid-phase extraction procedure.

Abstract
Dynamic field gradient focusing uses an electric field gradient generated by controlling the voltage profile of an electrode array to separate and concentrate charged analytes according to their individual electrophoretic mobilities. This study describes a new instrument in which the electrodes have been placed within the separation channel. The major challenge faced with this device is that when applied voltages to the electrodes are larger than the redox potential of water, electrolysis will occur, producing hydrogen ions (H+) plus oxygen gas on the anodes and hydroxide (OH(-)) plus hydrogen gas on the cathodes. The resulting gas bubbles and pH excursions can cause problems with system performance and reproducibility. An on-column, degassing system that can remove gas bubbles "on-the-fly" is described. In addition, the use of a high capacity, low-conductivity buffer to address the problem of the pH shift that occurs due to the production of H+ on the anodes is illustrated. Finally, the successful separation of three, low-molecular-weight dyes (amaranth, bromophenol blue and methyl red) is described.

Abstract
The separation of ten beta-blockers has been investigated in NACE systems using heptakis(2,3-di-O-methyl-6-O-sulfo)-beta-CD (HDMS-beta-CD) and heptakis(2,3-di-O-acetyl-6-O-sulfo)-beta-CD (HDAS-beta-CD). The influence on enantioresolution, mobility difference and selectivity of the nature of both anionic CD and BGE anion as well as their concentrations were studied by means of a multivariate approach. A D-optimal design with 25 experimental points was applied. For all studied analytes, the enantiomeric resolution was shown to be significantly influenced by both CD nature and concentration. Except for two compounds, HDAS-beta-CD was found to give higher enantioresolution values than HDMS-beta-CD. The best enantioseparation for all compounds was achieved in the presence of a high chiral selector concentration and for most of them at a low BGE anion concentration. For each investigated compound, operating conditions leading to the best enantiomeric resolution were deduced. A generic NACE system was then recommended, namely 10 mM ammonium acetate and 40 mM HDAS-beta-CD in methanol acidified with 0.75 M formic acid. This generic system was able to completely resolve the enantiomers of all beta-blockers, with a R(s) value of at least 4. Finally, the optimal conditions obtained modelling resolution, mobility difference and selectivity were compared.

Abstract
An analysis of recent trends indicates that CE can show real advantages over chromatographic methods in ultratrace enantioselective determination of biologically active compounds in complex biological matrices. It is due to high separation efficiency and many applicable in-capillary electromigration effects in CE (countercurrent migration, stacking effects) enhancing significantly (enantio)separability and enabling effective sample preparation (preconcentration, purification, analyte derivatization). Other possible on-line combinations of CE, such as column coupled CE-CE techniques and implementation of nonelectrophoretic techniques (extraction, membrane filtration, flow injection) into CE, offer additional approaches for highly effective sample preparation and separation. CE matured to a highly flexible and compatible technique enabling its hyphenation with powerful detection systems allowing extremely sensitive detection (e.g. LIF) and/or structural characterization of analytes (e.g. MS). Within the last decade, more as well as less conventional analytical on-line approaches have been effectively utilized in this field and their practical potentialities are demonstrated on many new application examples in this article. Here, three basic areas of (enantioselective) drug bioanalysis are highlighted and supported by a brief theoretical description of each individual approach in a compact review structure (to create integrated view on the topic), including (i) progressive enantioseparation approaches and new enantioselective agents, (ii) in-capillary sample preparation (preconcentration, purification, derivatization), and (iii) detection possibilities related to enhanced sensitivity and structural characterization.

Abstract
This paper summarizes the history of chiral separations done by using electromigration methods with CDs. Several enantioresolution mechanisms and a wide number of chiral selectors have been applied to the separation of optical isomers by CE. Among them inclusion-complexation with CDs or their derivatives played a very important role in CE. Since the beginning our group was involved in studying method optimization for enantiomer resolution by using these chiral selectors. One of our publications was the basis for further development in the field, at least for us. New chiral selectors, development of theory, new methodological approaches and a wide number of practical applications are the main results achieved in the last almost 25 years using CE as an enantioseparative technique.
