Abstract
The molecular-scale structure and dynamics of confined liquids has increasingly gained relevance for applications in nanotechnology. Thus, a detailed knowledge of the structure of confined liquids on molecular length scales is of great interest for fundamental and applied sciences. To study confined structures under dynamic conditions, we constructed an in situ X-ray surface forces apparatus (X-SFA). This novel device can create a precisely controlled slit-pore confinement down to dimensions on the 10 nm scale by using a cylinder-on-flat geometry for the first time. Complementary structural information can be obtained by simultaneous force measurements and X-ray scattering experiments. The in-plane structure of liquids parallel to the slit pore and density profiles perpendicular to the confining interfaces are studied by X-ray scattering and reflectivity. The normal load between the opposing interfaces can be modulated to study the structural dynamics of confined liquids. The confinement gap distance is tracked simultaneously with nanometer precision by analyzing optical interference fringes of equal chromatic order. Relaxation processes can be studied by driving the system out of equilibrium by shear stress or compression/decompression cycles of the slit pore. The capability of the new device is demonstrated on the liquid crystal 4'-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (8CB) in its smectic A (SmA) mesophase. Its molecular-scale structure and orientation confined in 100 nm to 1.7 μm slit pores was studied under static and dynamic nonequilibrium conditions.

Abstract
A set of new tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids (TAAILs) based on the 1-aryl-3-alkyl imidazolium motif has been synthesized, in which the following variables were systematically changed: alkyl chain length, aryl substitution (group and position), and counter ion. TAAILs with dicyanamide (DCA) and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (N(SO2 CF3 )2 , NTf2 ) anions showed remarkable differences of their physical properties: NTf2 ionic liquids were found to have high decomposition temperatures and viscosities well below those of the DCA TAAILs. In contrast, the dicyanamide anion increased the electrochemical stability leading to TAAILs with an extremely wide electrochemical window of up to 7.17 V. Additionally, both classes of TAAILs extract transition metals from aqueous solutions: TAAILs with the DCA anion extract both platinum and copper while TAAILs with the NTf2 anion are selective towards platinum. This demonstrates that minor changes of the molecular structure lead to TAAILs with drastically changed physicochemical properties.

Abstract
In light of increasing interest in the development of organic-organic multicomponent heterostructures on metals, this molecular-scale study investigates prototypical composite systems of ultrathin porphyrin and ionic liquid (IL) films on metallic supports under well-defined ultrahigh vacuum conditions. By means of angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we investigated the adsorption, stability, and thermal exchange of the resulting films after sequential physical vapor deposition of the free-base porphyrin 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin, 2H-TPP, and the IL 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C8C1Im][PF6], on Ag(111) and Au(111). 2H-TPP shows two-dimensional growth of up to two closed molecular layers on Ag(111) and Au(111) and three-dimensional island growth for thicker films. IL films on top of a monolayer of 2H-TPP exhibit Stranski-Krastanov-like growth and are stable up to 385 K. The 2H-TPP layer leads to destabilization of the IL films, compared to the IL in direct contact with the bare metals, by inhibiting the specific adsorption of the ions on the metal surfaces. When the porphyrin is deposited on top of [C8C1Im][PF6] at low temperature, the 2H-TPP molecules adsorb on top of the IL film at first but replace the IL at the IL/metal interfaces upon heating above 240 K. This exchange process is most likely driven by the higher adsorption energy of 2H-TPP on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces, as compared to the IL. The behavior observed on Ag(111) and Au(111) is identical. The results are highly relevant for the stability of porphyrin/IL-based thin film catalyst systems and molecular devices, and more generally, stacked organic multilayer architectures.

Abstract
A new nano-ordered 1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate-1,3-propylene covalently functionalized MCM-41 (MCM-41-Pr-THEIC) was designed and prepared at room temperature through a simple procedure. According to various microscopic, spectroscopic, or thermal methods and techniques, the correlation of the catalytic performance of the hybrid mesoporous MCM-41-Pr-THEIC to its structural characteristics was fully confirmed. The new MCM-41-Pr-THEIC organosilica nanomaterials were successfully investigated as a solid mild nanocatalyst through hydrogen-bonding activation provided by its organic moiety, for the pseudo-four-component condensation of dimedone, aldehydes, and ammonium acetate or p-toluidine to afford the corresponding acridinedione derivatives under green conditions. Furthermore, the introduced nanocatalyst could be reused at least four times with negligible loss of its activity, indicating the good stability and high activity of the new hybrid organosilica.

Abstract
A series of polymer-supported cooperative PC(sp3 )P pincer catalysts was synthesized and characterized. Their catalytic activity in the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols and the transfer hydrogenation of aldehydes with formic acid as a hydrogen source was investigated. This comparative study, examining homogeneous and polymer-tethered species, proved that carefully designing a link between the support and the catalytic moiety, which takes into consideration the mechanism underlying the target transformation, might lead to superior heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract
The catalytic hydrogenation of different aldehydes to the corresponding alcohols was investigated using an FeII hydride pincer complex as catalyst in the supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) reaction mode. Two different ionic liquids of the type [X4441][NTf2] with X=N or P were applied with mesoporous silica gel as support, which was coated first with a chemisorbed monolayer of the corresponding modified IL to remove acidic surface OH-groups and to prevent IL leaching. Quantitative conversion with turn-over frequencies in the order of 1000 h- 1 were obtained for various aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes and highly selective aldehyde reduction was observed also for substrates containing reducible C=C bonds. Aldehydes with longer aliphatic chains or cycloalkyl substituents, however, showed no conversion here, in contrast to a previous study with an imidazolium-based ionic liquid. These differences were ascribed primarily to differences in substrate/ionic liquid interactions. Whereas [N4441][NTf2] and [P4441][NTf2] gave essentially identical results for different substrates in single-batch reactions, prolonged use of the catalyst in repeated reaction cycles lead to a quick drop-off in catalyst activity in [P4441][NTf2], but a continuous, quantitative conversion in [N4441][NTf2].

Abstract
Dehydrogenative C-H arylations of 1,2,3-triazoles were accomplished with the aid of a reusable palladium catalyst in PEG. The widely applicable oxidative palladium catalysis enabled the synthesis of fully decorated 1,2,3-triazoles with a broad functional-group tolerance and ample substrate scope. The sustainability of the aerobic C-H arylation was reflected by the use of PEG as green reaction medium and demonstrated by recycling studies of the catalyst and the reaction medium.

Abstract
Amino acid-based ionic liquids (AAILs) are generally thought of as green solvents and widely used in many regions without systematic assessment of their effect on the environment or human health. In this work, a series of AAILs with different cations and amino acid anions were prepared and characterized, after which their microbial toxicity, phytotoxicity, and biodegradability were evaluated. The results showed that not all AAILs had low toxicity against microorganisms and that some AAILs were highly toxic towards the targeted microorganisms. The phytotoxic effect of the AAILs on rice (Oryza sativa L.) further demonstrated that AAILs should not be presumed to be non-toxic to plants. Moreover, the biodegradability tests showed that majority of AAILs were not satisfactorily biodegradable. In summary, not all AAILs are non-toxic or biodegradable, and their effect on the environment and human health must be assessed before their mass preparation and application.

Abstract
In the context of applications with thin ionic liquid (IL) films on solid supports, we studied the ion distribution within mixed thin IL films by angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. After the deposition of 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C8C1Im][PF6], on top of a wetting layer (WL) of 3-methyl-1-(3,3,4,4,4-pentafluorobutyl)imidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [PFBMIm][PF6], on Ag(111) at room temperature (RT), we find a preferential enrichment of the [PFBMIm]+ cation at the IL/vacuum interface. In a similar deposition experiment at 82 K, this cation exchange at the IL/solid interface does not occur. Upon heating the film from 82 K to RT, we observe the replacement of [C8C1Im]+ by [PFBMIm]+ at the IL/vacuum interface between ∼160 and ∼220 K. No further changes in the surface composition were observed between 220 K and RT. Upon further heating the mixed IL film, we find the complete desorption of [PFBMIm][PF6] from the mixed film below 410 K, leaving a WL of pure [C8C1Im][PF6] on Ag(111), which desorbs until 455 K.

Abstract
Supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalysis enables a highly efficient, Ru-based, homogeneously catalyzed water-gas shift reaction (WGSR) between 100 °C and 150 °C. The active Ru-complexes have been found to exist in imidazolium chloride melts under operating conditions in a dynamic equilibrium, which is dominated by the [Ru(CO)3 Cl3 ]- complex. Herein we present state-of-the-art theoretical calculations to elucidate the reaction mechanism in more detail. We show that the mechanism includes the intermediate formation and degradation of hydrogen chloride, which effectively reduces the high barrier for the formation of the requisite dihydrogen complex. The hypothesis that the rate-limiting step involves water is supported by using D2 O in continuous catalytic WGSR experiments. The resulting mechanism constitutes a highly competitive alternative to earlier reported generic routes involving nucleophilic addition of hydroxide in the gas phase and in solution.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) as a green replacement for volatile organic solvents are increasingly used in large-scale commercial applications. A good understanding of the toxic mechanisms and environmental impact of ILs is neede to reduce the risk for human health and the environment. For this purpose, we aimed to evaluate the possible impacts of 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium bromide ([C8mim]Br) exposure on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells as to elucidate the cytotoxic mechanism of [C8mim]Br. Biochemical assays revealed that [C8mim]Br exposure altered the protein levels of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and HSP90, generally inhibiting total antioxidative capacity (T-AOC), depleting heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and increasing transcription and activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in HepG2 cells. These results indicated that [C8mim]Br may induce biochemical disturbances and cause oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. Moreover, increased phosphorylation of p53, mitochondrial membrane disruption, cyclooxygenase-2 activation, Bcl-2 family protein modulation, cytochrome c and Smac/DIABLO release, and inhibition of apoptosis inhibitory protein-2 (c-IAP2) and survivin were also observed in [C8mim]Br-treated cells, suggesting that [C8mim]Br-induced apoptosis might be mediated by the mitochondrial pathway. Further research showed that [C8mim]Br exposure increased tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) transcription and content and promoted the expression of Fas and FasL, indicating that TNF-α and Fas/FasL are involved in the apoptosis induced by [C8mim]Br. Additionally, [C8mim]Br cytotoxicity was partly inhibited by N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), and NAC reversed [C8mim]Br-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and blocked apoptotic events by inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work first demonstrated that the ROS-mediated mitochondrial and death receptor-initiated apoptotic pathway is involved in [C8mim]Br-induced HepG2 cell apoptosis.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered as attractive electrolyte solvents in modern battery concepts such as Li-ion batteries. Here we present a comprehensive review of the results of previous model studies on the interaction of the battery relevant IL 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BMP]+[TFSI]-) with a series of structurally and chemically well-defined model electrode surfaces, which are increasingly complex and relevant for battery applications [Ag(111), Au(111), Cu(111), pristine and lithiated highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), and rutile TiO2(110)]. Combining surface science techniques such as high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for characterizing surface structure and chemical composition in deposited (sub-)monolayer adlayers with dispersion corrected density functional theory based calculations, this work aims at a molecular scale understanding of the fundamental processes at the electrode | electrolyte interface, which are crucial for the development of the so-called solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer in batteries. Performed under idealized conditions, in an ultrahigh vacuum environment, these model studies provide detailed insights on the structure formation in the adlayer, the substrate-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions responsible for this, and the tendency for chemically induced decomposition of the IL. To mimic the situation in an electrolyte, we also investigated the interaction of adsorbed IL (sub-)monolayers with coadsorbed lithium. Even at 80 K, postdeposited Li is found to react with the IL, leading to decomposition products such as LiF, Li3N, Li2S, LixSOy, and Li2O. In the absence of a [BMP]+[TFSI]- adlayer, it tends to adsorb, dissolve, or intercalate into the substrate (metals, HOPG) or to react with the substrate (TiO2) above a critical temperature, forming LiOx and Ti3+ species in the latter case. Finally, the formation of stable decomposition products was found to sensitively change the equilibrium between surface Li and Li+ intercalated in the bulk, leading to a deintercalation from lithiated HOPG in the presence of an adsorbed IL adlayer at >230 K. Overall, these results provide detailed insights into the surface chemistry at the solid | electrolyte interface and the initial stages of SEI formation at electrode surfaces in the absence of an applied potential, which is essential for the further improvement of future Li-ion batteries.

Abstract
Thin ionic liquid (IL) films play an important role in many applications. To obtain a better understanding of the ion distribution within IL mixture films, we sequentially deposited ultrathin layers of two ILs with the same cation but different anions onto Ag(111), and monitored their dynamic behaviour by angle‐resolved X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Upon depositing [C8C1Im][PF6] on top of a wetting layer of [C8C1Im][Tf2N] at room temperature (RT), we found a pronounced enrichment of the [Tf2N]− anions at the IL/vacuum interface, due to a rapid anion exchange at the IL/solid interface. In contrast, at 90 K, the [Tf2N]− anions remain at the IL/solid interface. Upon heating, we observe a rearrangement of the cations between 140 and 160 K, such that the octyl chains preferentially point towards the vacuum. Above 170 K, the ions start to become mobile, and at 220 K, the anion exchange is completed, with the [Tf2N]− anions enriched at the IL/vacuum interface in the same way as found for deposition at RT. The temperature range for the anion exchange corresponds well to glass transition temperatures reported in literature. We propose two driving forces to be cooperatively responsible for the replacement/exchange of [Tf2N]− at the IL/solid interface and its enrichment at the IL/vacuum interface. First, the adsorption energy of [C8C1Im][PF6] is significantly larger than that of [C8C1Im][Tf2N], and second, the surface tension of [C8C1Im][Tf2N] is lower than that of [C8C1Im][PF6].

Abstract
For equimolar mixtures of ionic liquids with imidazolium‐based cations of very different electronic structure, we observe very pronounced surface enrichment effects by angle‐resolved X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For a mixture with the same anion, that is, 1‐methyl‐3‐octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate+1,3‐di(methoxy)imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C8C1Im][PF6]+[(MeO)2Im][PF6]), we find a strong enrichment of the octyl chain‐containing [C8C1Im]+ cation and a corresponding depletion of the [(MeO)2Im]+ cation in the topmost layer. For a mixture with different cations and anions, that is, [C8C1Im][Tf2N]+[(MeO)2Im][PF6], we find both surface enrichment of the [C8C1Im]+ cation and the [Tf2N]− (bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide) anion, while [(MeO)2Im]+ and [PF6]− are depleted from the surface. We propose that the observed behavior in these mixtures is due to a lowering of the surface tension by the enriched components. Interestingly, we observe pronounced differences in the chemical shifts of the imidazolium ring signals of the [(MeO)2Im]+ cations as compared to the non‐functionalized cations. Calculations of the electronic structure and the intramolecular partial charge distribution of the cations contribute to interpreting these shifts for the two different cations.

Abstract
Large-scale application of ionic liquids (ILs) hinges on the advancement of designable and eco-friendly nature. Research of the potential toxicity of ILs towards different organisms and trophic levels is insufficient. Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) model is applied to evaluate the toxicity of ILs towards the leukemia rat cell line (ICP-81). The structures of 57 cations and 21 anions were optimized by quantum chemistry. The electrostatic potential surface area (SEP) and charge distribution area (Sσ-profile) descriptors are calculated and used to predict the toxicity of ILs. The performance and predictive aptitude of extreme learning machine (ELM) model are analyzed and compared with those of multiple linear regression (MLR) and support vector machine (SVM) models. The highest R2 and the lowest AARD% and RMSE of the training set, test set and total set for the ELM are observed, which validates the superior performance of the ELM than that of obtained by the MLR and SVM. The applicability domain of the model is assessed by the Williams plot.

Abstract
Time dependent changes of IL film morphology depend on their molecular structure.
Various amounts of the ionic liquids (ILs) [C1C1Im][Tf2N] and [C8C1Im][Tf2N] were deposited in vacuo by physical vapour deposition (PVD) on single crystalline Ag(111) at room temperature and subsequently monitored by angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) as a function of time. For very low coverages of up to one closed molecular layer, an initial wetting layer was rapidly formed for both ILs. Deposition of higher amounts of [C1C1Im][Tf2N] revealed an initial three-dimensional film morphology. On the time scale of hours, characteristic changes of the XPS signals were observed. These are interpreted as island spreading and a transformation towards a nearly two dimensional [C1C1Im][Tf2N] film as the final state. In contrast, a film morphology close to 2D was found from the very beginning for [C8C1Im][Tf2N] deposited on Ag(111) demonstrating the influence of the alkyl chain length on the growth kinetics. These studies also highlight the suitability of time-resolved ARXPS for the investigation of IL/solid interfaces, which play a crucial role in IL thin film applications such as in catalysis, sensor, lubrication, and coating technologies.

Abstract
A novel, eco-friendly method for the activation of lignin by controlled oxidation was studied. The results obtained for six acidic imidazolium ionic liquids containing the hydrogen sulfate anion were compared. The key goal of this research was to increase the content of carbonyl groups in the lignin structure because these may play the main role in the transport of protons and electrons in active materials for electrochemical applications. By means of a variety of analytical techniques (FTIR, 13 C CP/MAS NMR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; selected reactions to determine the presence of carbonyl groups; SEM; zeta-potential analysis; thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermogravimetric analysis; and porous structure analysis), it was determined that the product obtained after treatment with 3-cyclohexyloxymethy-1-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate had favorable properties, in terms of the target application. Electrochemical tests proved that the obtained materials could be used as anodes in lithium batteries. The results show that the activation of lignin with ionic liquids can increase its capacity and maintain stability.

Abstract
Surface induced smectic order was found for the ionic liquid 1-methyl-3-docosylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethlysulfonyl)imide by X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence scattering experiments. Near the free liquid surface, an ordered structure of alternating layers composed of polar and non-polar moieties is observed. This leads to an oscillatory interfacial profile perpendicular to the liquid surface with a periodicity of 3.7 nm. Small angle X-ray scattering and polarized light microscopy measurements suggest that the observed surface structure is related to fluctuations into a metastable liquid crystalline SmA2 phase that was found by supercooling the bulk liquid. The observed surface ordering persists up to 157 °C, i.e. more than 88 K above the bulk melting temperature of 68.1 °C. Close to the bulk melting point, we find a thickness of the ordered layer of L = 30 nm. The dependency of L(τ) = Λ ln(τ/τ1) vs. reduced temperature τ follows a logarithmic growth law. In agreement with theory, the pre-factor Λ is governed by the correlation length of the isotropic bulk phase.

Abstract
The vacuum-liquid interfaces of a number of ionic-liquid mixtures have been investigated using the combination of reactive-atom scattering with laser-induced fluorescence detection (RAS-LIF), selected surface tension measurements, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The mixtures are based on the widespread 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ([Cnmim]+) cation, including mixed cations which differ in chain length or chemical functionality with a common anion; and different anions for a common cation. RAS-LIF results imply that the surface compositions exhibit a general form of non-stoichiometric behaviour that mimics the well-known Henry's and Raoult's laws at low and high mole fraction, respectively. The extended Langmuir model provides a moderately good single-parameter fit, but higher-order terms are required for an accurate description. The quantitative relationship between RAS-LIF and surface tension, which probes the surface composition only indirectly, is explored for mixtures of [C2mim]+ and [C12mim]+ with a common bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([NTf2]-) anion. Extended Langmuir model fits to surface tension data are broadly consistent with those to RAS-LIF; however, several other common approaches to extracting surface compositions from measured surface tensions result in much larger discrepancies. MD simulations suggest that RAS-LIF faithfully reports on the alkyl-chain exposure at the surface, which is only subtly modified by composition-dependent structural reorganisation.

Abstract
Metal ions in ionic liquids are laid under an unprecedented reaction field. In order to assess the reaction thermodynamics of metal ions in such a situation, Cu2+-chloro complex formation was examined with spectroscopic and calorimetric titrations in an ionic liquid, 1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (C4mimTfO). In addition, the effect of the structure of the solvated complexes on the complexation mechanism was investigated with the aid of DFT calculations. Chloro complexation successively proceeded and finally provided a [CuCl4]2- species, which is also the final product in conventional molecular solvents. Their stability constants were comparable to those in molecular solvents. Interestingly, in spite of the charged solvent in the ionic liquid, the entropy profile of the complexation resembled that in the conventional molecular liquids. This indicates that the entropy gain of the released solvent species from the complexes is the main driving force of the chloro complexation in the ionic liquid. In contrast, unlike the major molecular solvents, the total coordination number of Cu2+ is saturated to 4 in the ionic liquid, and the Cl- complexation tends to be accompanied by a 1:1 exchange of the solvent TfO- from the complex. In addition, this ligand exchange was almost athermal. This possibly indicates that the coordination number is dominated by the electrostatic hindrance among the ligands including the solvent ions in the primary coordination sphere.

Abstract
Until very recently, the term Lewis acidic ionic liquids (ILs) was nearly synonymous with halometallate ILs, with a strong focus on chloroaluminate(III) systems. The first part of this review covers the historical context in which these were developed, speciation of a range of halometallate ionic liquids, attempts to quantify their Lewis acidity, and selected recent applications: in industrial alkylation processes, in supported systems (SILPs/SCILLs) and in inorganic synthesis. In the last decade, interesting alternatives to halometallate ILs have emerged, which can be divided into two sub-sections: (1) liquid coordination complexes (LCCs), still based on halometallate species, but less expensive and more diverse than halometallate ionic liquids, and (2) ILs with main-group Lewis acidic cations. The two following sections cover these new liquid Lewis acids, also highlighting speciation studies, Lewis acidity measurements, and applications.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (IL) hold a great potential as novel electrolytes for applications in electronic materials and energy technology. The functionality of ILs in these applications relies on their interface to semiconducting nanomaterials. Therefore, methods to control the chemistry and structure of this interface are the key to assemble new IL-based electronic and electrochemical materials. Here, we present a new method to prepare a chemically well-defined interface between an oxide and an IL film. An imidazolium-based IL, which is carrying an ester group, is deposited onto cobalt oxide surface by evaporation. The IL binds covalently to the surface by thermally activated cleavage of the ester group and formation of a bridging carboxylate. The anchoring reaction shows high structure sensitivity, which implies that the IL film can be adhered selectively to specific oxide surfaces.
