Abstract
Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical to numerous technologies; however, a combination of increasing demand, environmental concerns, and monopolistic marketplace conditions has spurred interest in boosting the domestic REE production from sources such as coal utilization byproducts. The economic viability of this approach requires rapid, inexpensive, and sensitive analytical techniques capable of characterizing the REE content during resource exploration and downstream REE processing (e.g., analyzing REE separation, concentration, and purification production steps). Luminescence-based sensors are attractive because many REEs may be sensitized to produce element-specific emission. Hence, a single material may simultaneously detect and distinguish multiple REEs. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can sensitize multiple REEs, but their viability has been hindered by sensitivity and selectivity challenges. Understanding how the MOF structure impacts the REE sensing efficacy is critical to the rational design of new sensors. Here, we evaluate the sensing performance of seven different anionic zinc-adeninate MOFs with different organic linkers and/or structures for the visible-emitting REEs Tb, Dy, Sm, and Eu. The choice of a linker determines which REEs are sensitized and significantly influences their sensitivity and selectivity against competing species (here, Fe(II) and HCl). For a given linker, structural changes to the MOF can further fine-tune the performance. The MOFs produce some of the lowest detection limits (sub-10 ppb for Tb) reported for the aqueous sensitization-based REE detection. Importantly, the most selective MOFs demonstrated the ability to sensitize the REE signal at sub-ppm levels in a REE-spiked acid mine drainage matrix, highlighting their potential for use in real-world sensing applications.

Abstract
Four new Pr(III) mononuclear complexes of formula [Pr(ntfa)3(MeOH)2] (1), [Pr(ntfa)3(bipy)2] (2), [Pr(ntfa)3(4,4′-Mt2bipy)] (3) and [Pr(ntfa)3(5,5′-Me2bipy)] (4), where ntfa = 4,4,4-trifuoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dionato(1-), 5,5′-Me2bipy = 5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridine, 4,4′-Mt2bipy = 4,4′-dimethoxy-2,2′-dipyridine, have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The complexes display the coordination numbers 8 for 1, 3 and 4, and 10 for 2. Magnetic measurements of complexes 1–4 were consistent with a magnetically uncoupled Pr3+ ion in the 3H4 ground state. The solid state luminescence studies showed that the ancillary chelating bipyridyl ligands in the 2–4 complexes greatly enhance the luminescence emission in the visible and NIR regions through efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the central Pr3+ ion; behaving as “antenna” ligands.

Abstract
In this article, a series of luminescent lanthanide β-diketonate solid solutions, with the formula of TBAEuxM1-x(TTA)4 (TBA = tetrabutylammonium; M = La or Gd; TTA = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate), are synthesized by co-precipitation. In the solid solutions, the emission efficiency of Eu3+ is significantly increased with the presence of non-luminescent chelates TBALa(TTA)4 and TBAGd(TTA)4. Low temperature luminescence spectroscopy studies indicate that the TTA- ligands in these non-luminescent chelates do emit phosphorescence with long lifetime. However, the ligand phosphorescence is strongly quenched in solid solutions with the luminescent chelate TBAEu(TTA)4, providing strong evidence for intermolecular energy transfer through the triplet excited states of the ligands. A quantitative analysis of Eu3+ emission enhancement and TTA- phosphorescence quenching reveals that each Eu3+ center may receive excitation energy from about 30 TTA- ligands, suggesting that the excitation energy has become exciton-like in the solid solutions. Based on the crystallography analysis of TBALn(TTA)4, it is discovered that TTA- ligands in neighboring Ln(TTA)4- units may form π-π stacks with intermolecular distance ≤3.5 Å, thus enabling efficient triplet exciton diffusion via exchange interaction.

Abstract
Optical tags provide a way to quickly and unambiguously identify valuable assets. Current tag fluorophore options lack the tunability to allow combined methods of encoding in a single material. Herein we report a design strategy to encode multilayer complexity in a family of heterometallic rare-earth metal-organic frameworks based on highly connected nonanuclear clusters. To impart both intricacy and security, a synergistic approach was implemented resulting in both overt (visible) and covert (near-infrared, NIR) properties, with concomitant multi-emissive spectra and tunable luminescence lifetimes. Tag authentication is validated with a variety of orthogonal detection methodologies. Importantly, the effect induced by subtle compositional changes on intermetallic energy transfer, and thus on the resulting photophysical properties, is demonstrated. This strategy can be widely implemented to create a large library of highly complex, difficult-to-counterfeit optical tags.

Abstract
A double template agent strategy has been adopted to prepare a group of triacetate-adorned tri-Ln(III)-incorporated trimeric antimonotungstates (AMTs) K3Na21H[Ln3(CH3COO)3(HPO3)(WO4)][B-α-SbW9O33]3·36H2O [Ln = Eu3+ (1), Dy3+ (2), Ho3+ (3), or Er3+ (4)] in a CH3COOH-CH3COONa buffer system. Therein, H3PO3 and Na2WO4·2H2O have been, respectively, transformed into the capped {HPO3} and {WO4} tetrahedra during the assembly process, which are situated at the center of polyoxoanions of 1-4 and simultaneously perform as structure-directing templates to induce the assembly of 1-4. The hexahedral configuration supramolecular stacking is the same as the shape of a crystal of 1, which illustrates that the supramolecular stacking mode plays a significant role in forming the crystal shape of 1-4. Under the Ln3+ f-f excitation, the photoluminescence behaviors involving the emission spectrograms and fluorescence decay curves of 1-4 were systematically researched. The modulation of the excitation wavelength has realized the emission color tuning from blue to red, blue to green, blue to yellow, and green to yellow for 1-4. On the basis of the excitation of O → W charge transfer (OWCT), the energy-transfer procedure from AMT units to Eu3+ centers in 1 is mainly accomplished in the form of energy reabsorption. This work proposes a typical case for the construction of a new type of AMT clusters by using the double template agent strategy and confirms the great potential of Ln-containing AMTs in optic applications.

Abstract
In this review, we describe all the structurally characterized complexes containing lanthanoids (Ln, including La and group 3 metals: Y and Lu) and any anilato-type ligand (3,6-disubstituted-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone dianion = C6O4X22−). We present all the anilato-Ln compounds including those where, besides the anilato-type ligand, there is one or more coligands or solvent molecules coordinated to the lanthanoid ions. We show the different structural types observed in these compounds: from discrete monomers, dimers and tetramers to extended 1D, 2D and 3D lattices with different topologies. We also revise the magnetic properties of these Ln-anilato compounds, including single-molecule magnet (SMM) and single-ion magnet (SIM) behaviours. Finally, we show the luminescent and electrochemical properties of some of them, their gas/solvent adsorption/absorption and exchange capacity and the attempts to prepare them as thin films.

Abstract
The formation of trimetallic terbium-europium-gadolinium complexes was proposed as an approach to increase the sensitivity of the corresponding terbium-europium complexes for temperature measurement due to the suppression of multiphotonic emission. This approach results in over a 2-fold increase of the sensitivity of Eu-Tb carboxylate, which reached 5.3% K-1 in the physiological range.

Abstract
Rare earth (RE) elements are widely used in the luminescence and magnetic fields by virtue of their abundant 4f electron configurations. However, the overall performance and aqueous stability of single-component RE materials need to be urgently improved to satisfy the requirements for multifunctional applications. Carbon nanodots (CNDs) are excellent nanocarriers with abundant functional surface groups, excellent hydrophilicity, unique photoluminescence (PL) and tunable features. Accordingly, RE-CND hybrids combine the merits of both RE and CNDs, which dramatically enhance their overall properties such as luminescent and magnetic-optical imaging performances, leading to highly promising practical applications in the future. Nevertheless, a comprehensive review focusing on the introduction and in-depth understanding of RE-CND hybrid materials has not been reported to date. This review endeavors to summarize the recent advances of RE-CNDs, including their interaction mechanisms, general synthetic strategies and applications in fluorescence, biosensing and multi-modal biomedical imaging. Finally, we present the current challenges and the possible application perspectives of newly developed RE-CND materials. We hope this review will inspire new design ideas and valuable references in this promising field in the future.

Abstract
Excited state energy level diagrams of coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (HCCA) chromophore, Eu(CCA)Cl2(H2O)2 (1), Eu(CCA)2Cl(H2O)2 (2), Eu(CCA)3(H2O)3 (3), Tb(CCA)2Cl(H2O) (4) and Tb(CCA)2(NO3)(H2O) (5) in gas phase and polar solution have been calculated by means of DFT/TDDFT/ωB97XD methods. Based on these results, the ability of CCA to sensitize Eu(III) and Tb(III) luminescence has been examined. The competitive excited state processes in the complexes - fluorescence, intersystem crossing (ISC) and phosphorescence, were analyzed depending on the environment, number of the ligands, Ln(III) ion type (Eu and Tb) and counteranion (Cl- and NO3-). It has been found that the environment altered the S1 state energy, oscillator strength, fluorescence lifetime as well as the S1 character - polar solution stabilized the S1(ππ*) state, whereas non-polar solution (gas phase, solid state) stabilized the S1(nπ*) state. The S1(nπ*) state was decisive for the efficient energy transfer as it suppressed the S1 emission of CCA and favored ISC or direct transfer to the emitting levels of Eu(III). The HCCA triplet (T1) state minimum energy (~2.7, ~2.6ZPE eV) and (ππ*) character were retained in Eu/Tb-CCA complexes regardless of the environment. The energy gap between the higher energy T1 donor state and the acceptor levels 5D1 of Eu(III) (~0.5 eV) and 5D4 of Tb(III) (~0.1 eV) provided optimal resonance conditions for effective energy transfer for Eu(III), but less probability for Tb(III). The nonradiative energy (CCA → Eu(III)) transfer rates and quantum luminescence yield for 2 and 3 were calculated by a strategy combining DFT geometries, INDO/S excitation energies and calculated Judd-Ofelt parameters. The excitation channel T1 → 5D0 through an exchange mechanism was predicted as the most probable one to populate the main emissive Eu-centered state in complexes 2 and 3. The more efficient luminescence of 3 than that of 2 was discussed and explained.

Abstract
Herein, the design, synthesis, and characterization of a phenhomazine ligand are described. The ligand has six pendant acetate arms designed for the combined coordination of copper(II) and lanthanide(III) ions, with the perspective of developing a "turn-off" copper sensor. The key step for the ligand preparation was the one-step endomethylene bridge fission of a diamino Tröger's base with a concomitant alkylation. Fluorescence and absorption spectroscopies as well as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments were performed to analyze and understand the coordination properties of the ligand. Transition metal coordination was driven by the synergistic effect of the free nitrogen atoms of the diazocinic core and the two central acetate arms attached to those nitrogen atoms, whereas lanthanide coordination is performed by the external acetate arms, presumably forming a self-assembled 2:2 metallosupramolecular structure. The terbium complex shows the typical green emission with narrow bands and long luminescence lifetimes. The luminescence quenching produced by the presence of copper(II) ions was analyzed. This work sets, therefore, a starting point for the development of a phenhomazine-based "turn-off" copper(II) sensor.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of simple lanthanide complexes with multiple functions have been widely studied and have faced certain challenges. Herein, we successfully synthesized the series of binuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln2(L1)2(NO3)4] (HL1 = 2-amino-1,2-bis(pyridin-2-yl)ethanol; Ln = Dy (Dy2), Tb (Tb2), Ho (Ho2) Er (Er2)) via the in situ self-condensation of Ln(NO3)3·6H2O-catalyzed 2-aminomethylpyridine (16 steps) under solvothermal conditions. Dy2 was mixed with different volatile organic solvents, and photoluminescence tests demonstrated that it showed an excellent selective photoresponse to chloroform (CHCl3). Sensing Tb2 on different organic solvents under the same conditions showed that it exhibited excellent selective photoresponse to methanol (CH3OH). Even under EtOH conditions, Tb2 could selectively respond to small amounts of CH3OH. To the best of our knowledge, achieving a selective photoresponse to various volatile organic compounds by changing the metal center of the complex is difficult. Furthermore, we performed anticounterfeiting tests on Tb2, and the results showed significant differences between the anticounterfeiting marks under white light and ultraviolet light conditions. The alternating current susceptibilities of Dy2 suggested that it was a typical single-molecule magnet (SMM) (Ueff = 93.62 K, τ0 = 1.19 × 10-5 s) under a 0 Oe dc field. Ab initio calculations on Dy2 indicated that the high degrees of axiality of the constituent mononuclear Dy fragments are the main reasons for the existence of SMM behavior.

Abstract
A trimeric tri-Tb3+-including antimonotungstate (AMT) hybrid Na17{(WO4)[Tb(H2O)(Ac)(B-α-SbW9O31(OH)2)]3}·50H2O (Tb3W28) was successfully synthesized, in which the capped tetrahedral {WO4} group plays a significant template role in directing the aggregation of three [B-α-SbW9O33]9- fragments and three Tb3+ ions. Eu3+/Tb3+/Dy3+/Gd3+-codoped AMT materials based on Tb3W28 were firstly prepared and their luminescence properties were investigated. The red emitter Eu3+, yellow emitter Dy3+, and nonluminous Gd3+ ions were codoped into Tb3W28 to substitute Tb3+ ions for investigating the energy transfer (ET) mechanism among Eu3+, Tb3+, and Dy3+ ions. Upon the 6H15/2 → 4I13/2 excitation at 389 nm of the Dy3+ ion, the ET1 mechanism (Dy3+ → Tb3+) was confirmed as a non-radiative dipole-dipole interaction. Under the 7F6 → 5L10 excitation at 370 nm of the Tb3+ ion, the ET2 mechanism (Tb3+ → Eu3+) was identified as a non-radiative quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. Under excitation at 389 nm, the two-step successive Dy3+ → Tb3+ → Eu3+ ET3 process was proved in Dy1.2Tb3zEu0.03Gd1.77-3zW28. Through changing the excitation wavelengths, the emission color of Dy1.2Tb1.2Eu0.03Gd0.57W28 can vary from blue to yellow, in which a near-white-light emission case was observed upon excitation at 378 nm. This work not only provides a systematic ET mechanism study of hetero-Ln-codoped AMTs, but also offers some useful guidance for designing novel performance-oriented Ln-codoped polyoxometalate-based materials.

Abstract
Six organic-inorganic hybrid pyridine-4-carboxylate-decorated organotin (OT)-lanthanide (Ln) heterometallic antimotungstates [Ln(H2O)6(pca)]H[Sn(CH3)2(H2O)]3[B-β-SbW9O33]·12H2O [Ln = La3+ (1), Ce3+ (2), Pr3+ (3), Nd3+ (4), Sm3+ (5), Eu3+ (6); Hpca = isonicotinic acid] have been prepared with the help of the structure-directing effect of the trivacant [B-α-SbW9O33]9- segment toward [(CH3)2Sn]2+ and Ln3+ ions in an acidic water medium. The prominent architecture characteristic is that their structural units consist of a trivacant [B-β-SbW9O33]9- segment stabilized by three [Sn(CH3)2(H2O)]2+ groups and a [Ln(H2O)6(pca)]2+ cation, which are interconnected to propagate an intriguing two-dimensional (2D) network. For all we know, 1-6 stand for the first 2D OT-Ln heterometallic polyoxometalates. Furthermore, luminescence performances of solid-state 3-6 were deeply surveyed at ambient temperature. Energy migration from [B-β-SbW9O33]9- and pca- to Sm3+ centers in 5 was also studied. Comparative studies demonstrate that the contribution of [B-β-SbW9O33]9- sensitizing the emission of Sm3+ is prominently larger than that of pca- sensitizing the emission of Sm3+ in the emission process of 5. Most interestingly, 6 as a fluorescence probe exhibits high selectability and sensitivity for recognizing Zn2+ and Cu2+ in water.

Abstract
The unique photophysical properties of lanthanides, such as europium, terbium, and ytterbium, make them versatile molecular probes of biological systems. In particular, their long-lived photoluminescence, narrow bandwidth emissions, and large Stokes shifts enable experiments that are infeasible with organic fluorophores and fluorescent proteins. The ability of these metal ions to undergo luminescence resonance energy transfer, and photon upconversion further expands the capabilities of lanthanide probes. In this review, we describe recent advances in the design of lanthanide luminophores and their application in biological research. We also summarize the latest detection systems that have been developed to fully exploit the optical properties of lanthanide luminophores. We conclude with a discussion of remaining challenges and new frontiers in lanthanide technologies. The unprecedented levels of sensitivity and multiplexing afforded by rare-earth elements illustrate how chemistry can enable new approaches in biology.

Abstract
The development of reliable bioanalytical probes for selective and sensitive detection of particular analytes in biological systems is essential for better understanding the roles of the analytes in their native contexts. In the last two decades, luminescent metal complexes have greatly contributed to the development of such probes for biosensing and imaging due to their unique spectral and temporal properties, controllable cell membrane permeability, and cytotoxicity. Conjugating an analyte-activatable moiety to the metal complex luminophores allows the production of responsive metal complex probes for this analyte detection. Owing to their long-lifetime emissions, the responsive metal complex probes are accessible to the technique of time-gated luminescence (TGL) detection and imaging. With a delay time after pulsed excitation, the TGL technique allows for collection of only long-lived luminescence from responsive metal complex probes, while filtering out short-lived background autofluorescence, providing a background-free approach for the detection and imaging of the analyte at subcellular and/or molecular levels. Responsive metal complex probes, therefore, have emerged as complementary sensing and imaging tools of organic dye-based fluorescent probes for the in situ detection of analytes in complicated biological environments. In this Account, we describe the advances in the development of metal complex probes and their applications for TGL bioassays with particular focus on our efforts made in this field. We first introduce the photophysical/-chemical properties of luminescent metal complexes, including lanthanide (europium and terbium) and transition metal (ruthenium and iridium) complexes. The luminescence lifetimes (τ) of lanthanide and transition metal complexes are at micro/millisecond (μs/ms) and hundreds/thousands nanosecond (ns) levels, respectively. The emission lifetimes are significantly longer than the autofluorescence lifetime (τ < 10 ns) of biological samples. Such long-lived luminescence of these metal complexes enables our research on demonstrating responsive probes for background-free TGL detection of some reactive biomolecules, such as reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) and biothiols. We conclude this Account by outlining the future directions to further develop new generation responsive TGL probes for promoting their practical applications. The responsive TGL probes are expected to be translated for biomedical and/or (pre)clinical investigations of biomolecules in situ. Reversibility, lower toxicity, ability of excitation at longer wavelength, and potential to be translated are key criteria for the development of next-generation probes. We also anticipate that further development of responsive TGL probes will contribute to the bioassay in more challenging biological systems, such as plants that have significant higher background autofluorescence than animals.

Abstract
Four groups of rare-earth complexes, comprising 11 new compounds, with fluorinated O-donor ligands ([K(THF)6][Ln(OC4F9)4(THF)2] (1-Ln; Ln = Ce, Nd), [K](THF)x[Ln(OC4F9)4(THF)y] (2-Ln; Ln = Eu, Gd, Dy), [K(THF)2][Ln(pinF)2(THF)3] (3-Ln; Ln = Ce, Nd), and [K(THF)2][Ln(pinF)2(THF)2] (4-Ln; Ln = Eu, Gd, Dy, Y) have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data were collected for all compounds except 2-Ln. Species 1-Ln, 3-Ln, and 4-Ln are uncommon examples of six-coordinate (Eu, Gd, Dy, and Y) and seven-coordinate (Ce and Nd) LnIII centers in all-O-donor environments. Species 1-Ln, 2-Ln, 3-Ln, and 4-Ln are all luminescent (except where Ln = Gd and Y), with the solid-state emission of 1-Ce being exceptionally blue-shifted for a Ce complex. The emission spectra of the six Nd, Eu, and Dy complexes do not show large differences based on the ligand and are generally consistent with the well-known free-ion spectra. Time-dependent density functional theory results show that 1-Ce and 3-Ce undergo allowed 5f → 4d excitations, consistent with luminescence lifetime measurements in the nanosecond range. Eu-containing 2-Eu and 4-Eu, however, were found to have luminescence lifetimes in the millisecond range, indicating phosphorescence rather than fluorescence. The performance of a pair of multireference models for prediction of the Ln = Nd, Eu, and Dy absorption spectra was assessed. It was found that spectroscopy-oriented configuration interaction as applied to a simplified model in which the free-ion lanthanide was embedded in ligand-centered Löwdin point charges performed as well (Nd) or better (Eu and Dy) than canonical NEVPT2 calculations, when the ligand orbitals were included in the treatment.

Abstract
Incorporation of Eu complexes into various organic or inorganic matrixes is one of the acceptable strategies to obtain displaying materials having practical applications. In this work, we report a convenient approach to preparing high luminescent organic-inorganic hybrid materials and films from the europium-titanium oxo-clusters (EuTOCs) having photoactive antenna ligands. Three Eu2Ti4 oxo-clusters were synthesized and crystallographically characterized. They are the first reported lanthanide-TOCs coordinated with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as photoactive ligands, Eu2Ti4O6(phen)2(pa)10 (1) (pa = propionate), Eu2Ti4O6(bpy)2(pa)10 (2), and Eu2Ti4O6(phen)2(MA)10 (3) (MA = methacrylate). Benefitting from the photoactive antenna ligands and the rigid cluster structures, these clusters showed bright red luminescence with quantum yield in the range of 60-80% and long lifetime up to 3.0 ms. Unlike those physically mixed polymeric materials, the MA coordinated compound 3 can be self-polymerized to form a brilliant luminescent film. The film coated slide was used to develop a fluorescence sensor for biomolecule ascorbic acid (AA). The low detection limit and reusable properties suggest great potential for such EuTOC films in real applications.

Abstract
Two new families of lanthanide antennas are described. 8-Methoxy-4,5-dihydrocyclopenta[de]quinolin-2(1H)-one phosphonates or carboxylates behave as selective antennas exhibiting Eu3+ luminescence in organic solvents, while quinolin-2(1H)-one analogues selectively sensitize the Tb3+ emission. These emissions are quenched by H2O addition. Based on this behaviour, the new lanthanide antennas can be used as highly sensitive water sensors.
