Regioselective Cross-Coupling of Isatogens with Boronic Acids to Construct 2,2-Disubstituted Indolin-3-one Derivatives

Herein we present a transition-metal-free cross-coupling reaction of isatogens with boronic acids through a 1,4-metalate shift of a boron "ate" complex. This coupling reaction provides a feasible method to deliver valuable 2,2-disubstituted indolin-3-one derivatives with excellent regioselectivity, which exhibit operational simplicity, good functional group tolerance, and a broad substrate scope.

Base-Activated Latent Heteroaromatic Sulfinates as Nucleophilic Coupling Partners in Palladium-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions

Heteroaromatic sulfinates are effective nucleophilic reagents in Pd0 -catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with aryl halides. However, metal sulfinate salts can be challenging to purify, solubilize in reaction media, and are not tolerant to multi-step transformations. Here we introduce base-activated, latent sulfinate reagents: β-nitrile and β-ester sulfones. We show that under the cross-coupling conditions, these species generate the sulfinate salt in situ, which then undergo efficient palladium-catalyzed desulfinative cross-coupling with (hetero)aryl bromides to deliver a broad range of biaryls. These latent sulfinate reagents have proven to be stable through multi-step substrate elaboration, and amenable to scale-up.

Mechanistic Aspects of the Palladium-Catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction

The story of C-C bond formation includes several reactions, and surely Suzuki-Miyaura is among the most outstanding ones. Herein, a brief historical overview of insights regarding the reaction mechanism is provided. In particular, the formation of the catalytically active species is probably the main concern, thus the preactivation is in competition with, or even assumes the role of the rate determining step (rds) of the overall reaction. Computational chemistry is key in identifying the rds and thus leading to milder conditions on an experimental level by means of predictive catalysis.

Pyrimidine-directed metal-free C-H borylation of 2-pyrimidylanilines: a useful process for tetra-coordinated triarylborane synthesis

Convenient, easily handled, laboratory friendly, robust approaches to afford synthetically important organoboron compounds are currently of great interest to researchers. Among the various available strategies, a metal-free approach would be overwhelmingly accepted, since the target boron compounds can be prepared in a metal-free state. We herein present a detailed study of the metal-free directed ortho-C–H borylation of 2-pyrimidylaniline derivatives. The approach allowed us to synthesize various boronates, which are synthetically important compounds and various four-coordinated triarylborane derivatives, which could be useful in materials science as well as Lewis-acid catalysts. This metal-free directed C–H borylation reaction proceeds smoothly without any interference by external impurities, such as inorganic salts, reactive functionalities, heterocycles and even transition metal precursors, which further enhance its importance.

We present the metal-free ortho-C–H borylation of 2-pyrimidylanilines to afford synthetically important boronic esters and tetra-coordinated triarylboranes, which could be useful in materials science as well as Lewis-acid catalysts.

Direct Arylation in the Presence of Palladium Pincer Complexes

Direct arylation is an atom-economical alternative to more established procedures such as Stille, Suzuki or Negishi arylation reactions. In comparison with other palladium sources and ligands, the use of palladium pincer complexes as catalysts or pre-catalysts for direct arylation has resulted in improved efficiency, higher reaction yields, and advantageous reaction conditions. In addition to a revision of the literature concerning intra- and intermolecular direct arylation reactions performed in the presence of palladium pincer complexes, the role of these remarkably active catalysts will also be discussed.

Practical iridium-catalyzed direct α-arylation of N-heteroarenes with (hetero)arylboronic acids by H2O-mediated H2 evolution

Despite the widespread applications of 2-(hetero)aryl N-heteroarenes in numerous fields of science and technology, universal access to such compounds is hampered due to the lack of a general method for their synthesis. Herein, by a H₂O-mediated H₂-evolution cross-coupling strategy, we report an iridium(III)-catalyzed facile method to direct α-arylation of N-heteroarenes with both aryl and heteroaryl boronic acids, proceeding with broad substrate scope and excellent functional compatibility, oxidant and reductant-free conditions, operational simplicity, easy scalability, and no need for prefunctionalization of N-heteroarenes. This method is applicable for structural modification of biomedical molecules, and offers a practical route for direct access to 2-(hetero)aryl N-heteroarenes, a class of potential cyclometalated C^N ligands and N^N bidentate ligands that are difficult to prepare with the existing α-C-H arylation methods, thus filling an important gap in the capabilities of synthetic organic chemistry.

Tannic Acid: A green and efficient stabilizer of Au, Ag, Cu and Pd nanoparticles for the 4-Nitrophenol Reduction, Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions and click reactions in aqueous solution

Due to the good electrical, optical, magnetic, catalytic properties, transition metal nanoparticles (TMNPs) have been becoming more and more interesting in the fileds of environment, material, biomedicine, catalysis, and so on. Here, tannic acid (TA) is used as a green and efficient stabilizer to fabricate all kinds of TMNPs including AuNPs, AgNPs, CuNPs and PdNPs. These TMNPs possess small sizes ranging from 1 nm to 6 nm, which is conducive to several catalytic reactions in aqueous solution, such as 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction, CuAAC reactions and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. AuNPs and PdNPs are found to have distinctly higher catalytic activities than AgNPs and CuNPs in the 4-NP reduction process. Especially, PdNPs show the highest catalytic activities with TOF up to 7200 h^-1 in the 4-NP reduction. Furthermore, PdNPs also exhibit satisfying catalytic performance in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling process, and CuNPs are catalytically active in the copper-catalyzed azide alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions. The applicability and generality of PdNPs and CuNPs are respectively confirmed via the reaction between different substrates in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions and the CuAAC reactions. This work present a simple, fast, green and efficient strategy to synthesize TMNPs for multiple catalysis.

Enantioselective synthesis of 3-aryl-phthalides through a nickel-catalyzed stereoconvergent cross-coupling reaction

A nickel-catalyzed asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of racemic 3-bromo-phthalides and arylboronic acids was realized for the synthesis of diverse chiral 3-aryl-phthalides in moderate to excellent reaction yields. The reaction proceeded in a stereoconvergent manner and high enantioselectivities were observed for most examined examples. A number of functional groups like aldehyde, ester and bromide were well tolerated. Heteroaromatic boronic acids were also competent coupling partners in this reaction.

Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling of Esters by Selective O-C(O) Cleavage Mediated by Air- and Moisture-Stable [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 Precatalysts: Catalyst Evaluation and Mechanism

The cross-coupling of aryl esters has emerged as a powerful platform for the functionalization of otherwise inert acyl C-O bonds in chemical synthesis and catalysis. Herein, we report a combined experimental and computational study on the acyl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl esters mediated by well-defined, air- and moisture-stable Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2. We present a comprehensive evaluation of [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 precatalysts and compare them with the present state-of-the-art [(Pd(NHC)allyl] precatalysts bearing allyl-type throw-away ligands. Most importantly, the study reveals [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 as the most reactive precatalysts discovered to date in this reactivity manifold. The unique synthetic utility of this unconventional O-C(O) cross-coupling is highlighted in the late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals and sequential chemoselective cross-coupling, providing access to valuable ketone products by a catalytic mechanism involving Pd insertion into the aryl ester bond. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive study of the catalytic cycle by DFT methods. Considering the clear advantages of [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 precatalysts on several levels, including facile one-pot synthesis, superior atom-economic profile to all other Pd(II)-NHC catalysts, and versatile reactivity, these should be considered as the 'first-choice' catalysts for all routine applications in ester O-C(O) bond activation.

Rare-Earth Incorporated Alloy Catalysts: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

To improve the performance of metallic catalysts, alloying provides an efficient methodology to design state-of-the-art materials. As emerging functional materials, rare-earth metal compounds can integrate the unique orbital structure and catalytic behavior of rare earth elements into metallic materials. Such rare-earth containing alloy catalysts proffer an opportunity to tailor electronic properties, tune charged carrier transport, and synergize surface reactivity, which are expected to significantly improve the performance and stability of catalysis. Despite its significance, there are only few reviews on rare earth containing alloys or related topics. This review summarizes the composition, synthesis, and applications of rare earth containing alloys in the field of catalysis. Subsequent to comprehensively summarizing and constructively discussing the existing work, the challenges and possibilities of future research on rare-earth metal compound materials are evaluated.

Prospects and Applications of Palladium Nanoparticles in the Cross-coupling of (hetero)aryl Halides and Related Analogues

Discovering efficient methods for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds is a central ongoing theme in organic synthesis. Cross-coupling reactions catalysed by metal nanoparticles are attractive alternatives to the traditional use of metal counterparts due to the catalytic tunability, selectivity, recyclability and reusability of the nanoparticles. The ongoing search for sustainable processes demands that reusable and environmentally benign catalysts are used. While the advantages of nanoparticles catalysts over bulk catalysts cannot be overemphasised, the problem of sintering, agglomeration and leaching are drawbacks to their full industrial applications. Hence, efforts are being made towards advancing the efficiency of the catalytic nanoparticle systems over the years. This review presents the progress, the challenges and the prospects of palladium nanoparticle with focus on Heck, Suzuki, Hiyama and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions involving (hetero) aryl halides and the analogues.

Visualization of catalyst dynamics and development of a practical procedure to study complex "cocktail"-type catalytic systems

The ability to distinguish molecular catalysis from nanoscale catalysis provides a key to success in the field of catalyst development, particularly for the transition to sustainable economies. Complex evolution of catalyst precursors, facilitated by dynamic interconversions and leaching, makes the identification of catalytically active forms an important task, which is sometimes very difficult. We propose a simple method for in situ capturing of nanoparticles with carbon-coated grids directly from reaction mixtures. Application of this method to the Mizoroki-Heck reaction allowed visualization of dynamic changes of the dominant form of palladium particles in the reaction mixtures with homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyst precursors. Changes in the size and shape of the palladium particles reflecting the progress of the catalytic chemical reaction were demonstrated. Detailed computational modeling was carried out to confirm the generality of this approach and its feasibility for different catalytic systems. The computational models revealed strong binding of metal particles to the carbon coating comprising efficient binding sites. The approach was tested for trapping Cr, Co, Ag, Ni, Cu, Pd, Cd, Ir, Ru and Rh nanoparticles from solutions containing micromolar starting concentrations of the metal precursors. The developed approach provides a unique tool for studying intrinsic properties of catalytic systems.

Catalytically active nanosized Pd9Te4 (telluropalladinite) and PdTe (kotulskite) alloys: first precursor-architecture controlled synthesis using palladium complexes of organotellurium compounds as single source precursors

Several intermetallic binary phases of Pd-Te including Pd3Te2, PdTe, PdTe2, Pd9Te4, Pd3Te, Pd2Te, Pd20Te7, Pd8Te3, Pd7Te2, Pd7Te3, Pd4Te and Pd17Te4 are known, and negligible work (except few studies on PdTe) has been done on exploring applications of such phases and their fabrication at nanoscale. Hence, Pd(ii) complexes Pd(L1)Cl2 and Pd(L2-H)Cl (L1): Ph-Te-CH2-CH2-NH2 and L2: HO-2-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]N-CH2CH2-Te-Ph were synthesized. Under similar thermolytic conditions, complex Pd(L1)Cl2 with bidentate coordination mode of ligand provided nanostructures of Pd9Te4 (telluropalladinite) whereas Pd(L2-H)Cl with tridentate coordination mode of ligand yielded PdTe (kotulskite). Bimetallic alloy nanostructures possess high catalytic potential for Suzuki coupling of aryl chlorides, and reduction of 4-nitrophenol. They are also recyclable upto six reaction cycles in Suzuki coupling.

Merging Boron with Nitrogen-Oxygen Bonds: A Review on BON Heterocycles

Cyclic boronate esters play important roles in organic synthesis, pharmacology, supramolecular chemistry and materials science owing to their stability in air and versatile reactivity. Most of these compounds contain a B-O-C linkage with an alkoxy- or carboxylate group bound to the boron atom (e.g. boronate-diol esters, MIDA boronates). Boron chelates comprising a B-O-N motif (BON heterocycles) are much less explored, although first representatives of this class were prepared in the early 1960s. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in BON heterocycles as new chemotypes for drug design. The exocyclic B-O-N linkage, which is readily formed under mild conditions, shows surprising hydrolytic and thermal resistance. This allows the formation of BON heterocycles to be used as click-type reactions for the preparation of bioconjugates and functionally modified polymers. We believe that BON heterocycles are promising yet underrated organoboron derivatives. This review summarizes the scattered information about known types of BON heterocycles, including their synthesis, reactivity and structural data. Available applications of BON heterocycles in materials science and medicinal chemistry, along with their prospects, are also discussed. The bibliography contains 289 references.

Ultrasound and click chemistry lead to a new chitin chelator. Its Pd(II) complex is a recyclable catalyst for the Sonogashira reaction in water

For the first time the possibility of chitin use as an accessible and easily-modifiable support for an efficient Pd(II) catalyst has been demonstrated. The modification of chitin avoiding a noticeable chain scission or deacetylation, is achieved by sonochemical alkylation with 1-azido-3-chloropropan-2-ol followed by a convenient azido-alkyne click reaction. The obtained polymer represents an extremely rare case of the chitin derivative soluble both in water and organic solvents. The treatment of that derivative with imino-isonitrile Pd(II) complex solution yielded a chitin-supported Pd(II) complex. The latter could be obtained as a powder or as uniform nanoparticles in different size ranges. The nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic diameter of 30 nm were shown to be the most efficient form of catalyst for the copper- and phosphine-free Sonogashira cross-coupling in water.

New NHC ligands containing a base-ionizable RNH substituent at the C3 atom of the 1,2,4-triazole ring provide superior stability of the Pd–NHC bond against cleavage in strong alkaline media.

New poly-imidazolium–triazole particles by CuAAC cross-linking of calix[4]arene bis-azide/alkyne amphiphiles – a prospective support for Pd in the Mizoroki–Heck reaction

A new imidazolium amphiphilic calix[4]arene with terminal acetylene fragments in the polar region was synthesized according to a two step scheme including regioselective chloromethylation of distal di-O-butyl calix[4]arene and subsequent interaction with 1-(hex-5-yn-1-yl)-1H-imidazole. The aggregation properties (CAC, the size and zeta potential of aggregates) of alkynyl calix[4]arene as well as of previously synthesized azidopropyl calix[4]arene and their 1 : 1 mixture were disclosed. Macrocycles with azide and alkyne fragments in the polar region were covalently cross-linked under CuAAC conditions in water. Successful cross-linking of molecules has been proven by IR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF spectrometry. The obtained polymeric particles were studied both in solution and the solid state and the presence of submicron (∼200 nm) and micron (∼1–5 μm) particles with the prevalence of the latter was found. The average molecular weight of the polymer according to the static light scattering data was found to be 639 ± 44 kDa. The obtained polymeric imidazolium–triazole particles were tested as a support for Pd(OAc)₂ in the Mizoroki–Heck reaction carried out in both organic and water media. In both solvents (especially in water) the addition of imidazolium–triazole particles to Pd(OAc)₂ increased the conversion of 4-iodanisole. It was found that the ratio between the products (1,1 and 1,2-substituted ethylenes) changes drastically on going from DMF to water from 1 : 5 to 1 : 40 when using supported Pd(OAc)₂.

A new supramolecular approach to the formation of polytriazole–imidazolium particles, promising supports for catalysis, based on self-assembly of amphiphilic bis-azides and bis alkynes and their linkage using CuAAC is presented.

Synthesis of ortho-arylated and alkenylated benzamides by palladium-catalyzed denitrogenative cross-coupling reactions of 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4(3H)-ones with organoboronic acids

An efficient palladium-catalyzed denitrogenative cross-coupling reaction of 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4(3H)-ones with organoboronic acids is described. The reaction affords various ortho-aryl and alkenylated benzamides in good to high yields.

Recent advances in pincer-nickel catalyzed reactions

Organometallic catalysts have played a key role in accomplishing numerous synthetically valuable organic transformations that are either otherwise not possible or inefficient. The use of precious, sparse and toxic 4d and 5d metals are an apparent downside of several such catalytic systems despite their immense success over the last several decades. The use of complexes containing Earth-abundant, inexpensive and less hazardous 3d metals, such as nickel, as catalysts for organic transformations has been an emerging field in recent times. In particular, the versatile nature of the corresponding pincer-metal complexes, which offers great control of their reactivity via countless variations, has garnered great interest among organometallic chemists who are looking for greener and cheaper alternatives. In this context, the current review attempts to provide a glimpse of recent developments in the chemistry of pincer-nickel catalyzed reactions. Notably, there have been examples of pincer-nickel catalyzed reactions involving two electron changes via purely organometallic mechanisms that are strikingly similar to those observed with heavier Pd and Pt analogues. On the other hand, there have been distinct differences where the pincer-nickel complexes catalyze single-electron radical reactions. The applicability of pincer-nickel complexes in catalyzing cross-coupling reactions, oxidation reactions, (de)hydrogenation reactions, dehydrogenative coupling, hydrosilylation, hydroboration, C-H activation and carbon dioxide functionalization has been reviewed here from synthesis and mechanistic points of view. The flurry of global pincer-nickel related activities offer promising avenues in catalyzing synthetically valuable organic transformations.

Recent advances in the development of palladium nanocatalysts for sustainable organic transformations

In this review, we highlighted Pd nanocatalysts which have been used in the development of sustainable organic transformations including transfer hydrogenation, C–H bond activation, and some carbon–carbon couplings in the last five years.
