Abstract
Biomedical devices are indispensable in modern medicine yet offer surfaces that promote bacterial attachment and biofilm formation, resulting in acute and chronic healthcare-associated infections. We have developed a simple method to graft acrylates to silicone rubber, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a commonly used device material that is often colonized by bacteria. We demonstrate a novel method whereby nontoxic bacteria attachment-resistant polymers can be readily grafted from and grafted to the surface using thiol-ene chemistry, substantially reducing bacterial colonization. With use of this approach, bacterial biofilm coverage can be reduced by 99% compared with standard PDMS in an in vitro assay. This grafting approach offers significant advantages over commonly used physisorbed coatings, especially in areas of high shear or mechanical stress. Furthermore, the approach is versatile such that the grafted material properties can be tailored for the desired final application.

Abstract
Unique alternating copolymers based on vinyl acetate (VAc) and tert-butyl-2-trifluoromethacrylate (MAF-TBE, a nonhomopolymerizable monomer under radical conditions) have been synthesized by nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) using a SG1-based BlocBuilder alkoxyamine (MAMA-SG1) at moderate temperature (at 40 °C) in dimethyl sulfoxide. First-order kinetics and linear evolutions of the molecular weight (up to 17100 g mol-1), maintaining low dispersity values (Đ ≤ 1.33), confirmed the controlled nature of the copolymerization. Interestingly, none of the starting monomers could undergo homopolymerization under the NMP condition initiated by MAMA-SG1. The resulting alternating copolymers were characterized by 1H, 13C, 19F, and 31P NMR spectroscopies and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The poly(VAc-alt-MAF-TBE) copolymer is amorphous and exhibited a single glass transition temperature of 59 °C. This is the first report of nitroxide-mediated (co)polymerization of VAc leading to well-defined copolymers with satisfactory yields. The results presented in this study established a new route via NMP toward the synthesis of strictly 1:1 alternating fluorocopolymers that can display diverse functionalities.

Abstract
The coordination of two heterofunctional P,P,S ligands of the N-functionalized DPPA-type bearing an alkylthioether or arylthioether N-substituent, (Ph2P)2N(CH2)3SMe (1) and (Ph2P)2N(p-C6H4)SMe (2), respectively, toward cobalt dichloride was investigated to examine the influence of the linker between the PNP nitrogen and the S atoms. The complexes [CoCl2(1)]2 (3) and [CoCl2(2)]2 (4) have been isolated, and 3 was shown by X-ray diffraction to be a unique dinuclear, zwitterion containing one CoCl moiety bis-chelated by two ligands 1 and one CoCl3 fragment coordinated by the S atom of a thioether function. The FT-IR, UV-vis, and EPR spectroscopic features of 3 were analyzed as the superposition of those of constitutive fragments identified by a retrosynthetic-type analysis. A similar approach provided insight into the nature of 4 for which no X-ray diffraction data could be obtained. A comparison between the spectroscopic features of 4 and of its constitutive fragments, [CoCl(2)2]PF6 (7) and [H2']2[CoCl4] (8) (2' = NH2(p-C6H4)SMe), and between those of 4 and 3 suggested that 4 could either have a zwitterionic structure, similar to that of 3, or contain a tetrahedral dicationic bis-chelated Co center associated with a CoCl4 dianion. Magnetic and EPR studies and theoretical calculations were performed. Doublet spin states were found for the pentacoordinated complexes [CoCl(1)2]PF6 (5) and 7 and anisotropic quadruplet spin states for the tetrahedral complexes [CoCl3(H1')] (6) (1' = NH2(CH2)3SMe) and 8. A very similar behavior was observed for 3 and 4, consisting in the juxtaposition of noninteracting doublet and quadruplet spin states. Antiferromagnetic interactions explain the formation of dimers for 6 and of layers for 8. The EPR signatures of 3 and 4 correspond to the superposition of low-spin nuclei in 5 and 7 and high-spin nuclei in 6 and 8, respectively. From DFT calculations, the solid-state structure of 4 appears best described as zwitterionic, with a low-spin state for the Co1 atom.

Abstract
The use of light to mediate controlled radical polymerization has emerged as a powerful strategy for rational polymer synthesis and advanced materials fabrication. This review provides a comprehensive survey of photocontrolled, living radical polymerizations (photo-CRPs). From the perspective of mechanism, all known photo-CRPs are divided into either (1) intramolecular photochemical processes or (2) photoredox processes. Within these mechanistic regimes, a large number of methods are summarized and further classified into subcategories based on the specific reagents, catalysts, etc., involved. To provide a clear understanding of each subcategory, reaction mechanisms are discussed. In addition, applications of photo-CRP reported so far, which include surface fabrication, particle preparation, photoresponsive gel design, and continuous flow technology, are summarized. We hope this review will not only provide informative knowledge to researchers in this field but also stimulate new ideas and applications to further advance photocontrolled reactions.

Abstract
The mechanism of the Cu(I)/Cu(0)-mediated reductive coupling reactions of bromine-terminated polymer chain-end radicals, so-called atom-transfer radical coupling (ATRC), is studied. Poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and polystyrene (PSt), prepared by atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), were activated by an excess amount of Cu(I)Br and Cu(0) in the presence of tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6TREN), and the structural analyses of the resulting polymer products and deuterium-labeling experiments unambiguously determined the mechanism. While PMMA and PSt reacted by a radical mechanism as expected, PMA-bromide was reduced to an anionic species, which was most likely an organocopper species. Trapping experiments with TEMPO suggested that the polymer chain-end radicals were generated in all cases by the reduction of the bromine-terminated polymers by low-valent Cu species. However, the PMA chain-end radical was further reduced to the anionic species from which coupling products formed in low yield.

Abstract
Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are two fields of research that at an initial glance appear to have little in common. However, despite their obvious differences, both in application and in scientific nature, a closer look reveals a striking similarity between many of the compounds widely used as control agents in radical polymerization and as redox couples in dye-sensitized solar cells. Herein, we review the various redox active compounds used and examine the characteristics that give them the ability to perform this dual function. In addition we explore the advances in the understanding of the structural features that enhance their activity in both CRP and DSSCs. It is hoped that such a comparison will be conducive to improving process performance in both fields.

Abstract
A new range of tin-based reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) agents is described and evaluated for the polymerization of acrylamides, methyl acrylate and styrene. These organometallic compounds are highly reactive reversible transfer agents which allow an efficient control of the polymerization of substituted acrylamide monomers, whereas RAFT control for methyl acrylate and styrene polymerization is contaminated by side reactions at prolonged reaction times. 119Sn NMR is shown to be an informative instrument for the monitoring of Sn-RAFT-mediated polymerizations.

Abstract
A vinyl ester monomer carrying a pendant 1,2,3-triazole group is synthesized in two steps and polymerized by cobalt-mediated radical polymerization. Subsequent alkylation with N-methyl bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide affords the corresponding poly(vinyl ester 1,2,3-triazolium). This unprecedented example of poly(vinyl ester ionic liquid) exhibits an ionic conductivity of 9.2 × 10(-7) S cm(-1) at 30 °C.

Abstract
The control of the polymerization of a wide range of monomers under mild conditions by a single catalyst remains a major challenge in polymer science. We report a versatile, well-defined organocobalt salen complex to control living radical polymerization of different categories of monomers, including acrylates, acrylamides and vinyl acetate, under visible light irradiation at ambient temperature. Both household light and sunlight were effectively applied in the synthesis of polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities. Narrowly dispersed block copolymers (Mw/Mn < 1.2) were obtained under various conditions. The structures of the polymers were analyzed by 1H NMR, 2D NMR, 13C NMR, GPC, MALDI-TOF-MS and isotopic labeling experiments, which showed that the ω and α ends of the polymer chains were capped with (salen)Co and -CO2CH3 segments, respectively, from the photoinitiator (salen)Co-CO2CH3. The ω end was easily functionalized through oxygen insertion followed by hydrolysis from 18O2 to -18OH. This robust system can proceed without any additives, and offers a versatile and green way to produce well-defined homo and block copolymers.

Abstract
Nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) is one of the most powerful reversible deactivation radical polymerization techniques and has incredibly gained in maturity and robustness over the last decades. However, control of methacrylic esters is one of the different aspects of NMP that still requires improvement. This family of monomers always represented an important challenge for NMP, despite the many different nitroxide structures that have been designed over the course of time. This Review aims to present the most successful strategies directed toward the control of the NMP technique of methacrylic esters and especially methyl methacrylate. NMP-derived materials comprising uncontrolled methacrylate segments will also be discussed.
