Recent advances of copolymer for water treatment

Increasing water pollution due to anthropogenic activities prompts the quest for an effective water treatment method. Polymeric materials have gained attention as adsorbents for water purification. Membranes are majorly made from homopolymeric materials. However, recent studies have focused on using copolymeric materials for improved performance. In this review, the basics of copolymerization including various types of copolymers, synthetic approaches, and their applications in various water pollutants removal are discussed in detail. Advances in water treatment technology using copolymeric materials as adsorbent/membranes in the last 4 years are covered with insights into the future outlook and areas of improvement in terms of copolymer composites for water treatment. Studies from the literature did not only reveal effectiveness of copolymer as a flocculant/antifouling materials and in removal of selective toxic metals, oil, and microbes but also demonstrated recyclability of the copolymer sorbents/membrane. Full exploration of unique copolymer textural and structural properties could lead to great advancement in water treatment process. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The copolymer types and synthetic methods are discussed. Application of copolymer as adsorbent/membranes for water treatment is presented. Recent advances show good pollutants removal for toxic metals, oil, and organics. Copolymer composites have great potential as adsorbent/membranes for future use in water treatment processes.

Red-Shifted Luminescence of Acrylonitrile-Containing Copolymers: A Matter of One Methyl Unit

Copolymerization provides an effective approach to tune the photophysical properties of non-conventional luminescent polymers (NCLPs). In this study, the controlling of intrinsic emissions of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymers is revealed by a delicate difference of secondary monomers. The introduction of methacrylate comonomers can induce a 70-nm red-shifting in the PL emission of copolymers compared with that of acrylate-containing copolymers. The mechanism of such "copolymerization induced red-shifting" in PAN copolymers is investigated. It is demonstrated that the presence of the α-methyl group in the copolymers can enhance the chain rigidity and through-space conjugation (TSC) of C≡N groups, resulting in the red-shifting of emission.

A Nanocomposite Dynamic Covalent Cross-Linked Hydrogel Loaded with Fusidic Acid for Treating Antibiotic-Resistant Infected Wounds

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is associated with high levels of morbidity and is considered a difficult-to-treat infection, often requiring nonstandard treatment regimens and antibiotics. Since over 40% of the emerging antibiotic compounds have insufficient solubility that limits their bioavailability and thus efficacy through oral or intravenous administration, it is crucial that alternative drug delivery products be developed for wound care applications. Existing effective treatments for soft tissue MRSA infections, such as fusidic acid (FA), which is typically administered orally, could also benefit from alternative routes of administration to improve local efficacy and bioavailability while reducing the required therapeutic dose. Herein, we report an antimicrobial poly(oligoethylene glycol methacrylate) (POEGMA)-based composite hydrogel loaded with fusidic acid-encapsulating self-assembled polylactic acid-b-poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (PLA-POEGMA) nanoparticles for the treatment of MRSA-infected skin wounds. The inclusion of the self-assembled nanoparticles (380 nm diameter when loaded with fusidic acid) does not alter the favorable mechanical properties and stability of the hydrogel in the context of its use as a wound dressing, while fusidic acid (FA) can be released from the hydrogel over ∼10 h via a diffusion-controlled mechanism. The antimicrobial studies demonstrate a clear zone of inhibition in vitro and a 1-2 order of magnitude inhibition of bacterial growth in vivo in an MRSA-infected full-thickness excisional murine wound model even at very low antibiotic doses. Our approach thus can both circumvent challenges in the local delivery of hydrophobic antimicrobial compounds and directly deliver antimicrobials into the wound to effectively combat methicillin-resistant infections using a fraction of the drug dose required using other clinically relevant strategies.

Hybrid Organosulfur Network/MWCNT Composite Cathodes for Li-S Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold a promising position as candidates for next-generation high-energy storage systems. Here, we combine inverse vulcanization of sulfur with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to increase the conductivity of cathode materials for Li-S batteries. The mixing process of inversely vulcanized sulfur copolymer networks with MWCNTs is aided by shear in a two-roll mill to take advantage of the soft nature of the copolymer. The high-throughput mixing method demands a source of conductive carbon that can be intimately mixed with the S copolymer, rendering MWCNTs an excellent choice for this purpose. The resulting sulfur copolymer network-MWCNTs composites were thoroughly characterized in terms of structure, chemical composition, thermal, and electronic transport properties, and finally evaluated by electrochemical benchmarking. These promising hybrids yielded electrodes with high sulfur content and demonstrate stable electrochemical performance exhibiting a specific capacity of ca. 550 mAh·gsulfur-1 (380 mAh·gelectrode-1) even after 500 charge-discharge cycles at specific current of 167 mA·g-1 (corresponds to 0.1C discharge rate), and thus are superior to melt-infiltrated reference samples.

TPGS-b-PBAE Copolymer-Based Polyplex Nanoparticles for Gene Delivery and Transfection In Vivo and In Vitro

Poly (β-amino ester) (PBAE) is an exceptional non-viral vector that is widely used in gene delivery, owing to its exceptional biocompatibility, easy synthesis, and cost-effectiveness. However, it carries a high surface positive charge that may cause cytotoxicity. Therefore, hydrophilic d-α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS) was copolymerised with PBAE to increase the biocompatibility and to decrease the potential cytotoxicity of the cationic polymer-DNA plasmid polyplex nanoparticles (NPs) formed through electrostatic forces between the polymer and DNA. TPGS-b-PBAE (TBP) copolymers with varying feeding molar ratios were synthesised to obtain products of different molecular weights. Their gene transfection efficiency was subsequently evaluated in HEK 293T cells using green fluorescent protein plasmid (GFP) as the model because free GFP is unable to easily pass through the cell membrane and then express as a protein. The particle size, ζ-potential, and morphology of the TBP2-GFP polyplex NPs were characterised, and plasmid incorporation was confirmed through gel retardation assays. The TBP2-GFP polyplex NPs effectively transfected multiple cells with low cytotoxicity, including HEK 293T, HeLa, Me180, SiHa, SCC-7 and C666-1 cells. We constructed a MUC2 (Mucin2)-targeting CRISPR/cas9 gene editing system in HEK 293T cells, with gene disruption supported by oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) insertion in vitro. Additionally, we developed an LMP1 (latent membrane protein 1)-targeting CRISPR/cas9 gene editing system in LMP1-overexpressing SCC7 cells, which was designed to cleave fragments expressing the LMP1 protein (related to Epstein-Barr virus infection) and thus to inhibit the growth of the cells in vivo. As evidenced by in vitro and in vivo experiments, this system has great potential for gene therapy applications.

Promising Fluorine-Free Ion Exchange Membranes Based on a Poly(ether-block-amide) Copolymer and Sulfonated Montmorillonite: Influence of Different Copolymer Segment Ratios

Novel composite membranes employing a poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBAX) copolymer and sulfonated montmorillonite (S-MMT) as a filler were developed. The ratio of polyether to polyamide blocks was investigated using PEBAX 2533 and PEBAX 4533 based on the membrane properties and performance. Additionally, the effect of the changing filler ratio was monitored. The interaction between the S-MMT as nanofiller and the polymer matrix of PEBAX2533 and PEBAX4533 as well as the crystalline nature and thermal and mechanical stability of the composite membranes were evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile test. The composite membrane with 7 wt.% S-MMT showed the highest water uptake of 21% and 16% and an acceptable swelling degree of 16% and 9% for PEBAX 2533 and PEBAX 4533 composite membranes, respectively. In terms of water uptake and ion exchange capacity at room temperature, the new un-protonated membranes are superior to un-protonated Nafion. Meanwhile, with the same S-MMT content, the ion conductivity of PEBAX 2533 and PEBAX 4533 composite membranes is 2 and 1.6 mS/cm, and their ion exchange capacity is 0.9 and 1.10 meq/g.

Pyrolytic Modification of Heavy Coal Tar by Multi-Polymer Blending: Preparation of Ordered Carbonaceous Mesophase

In order to achieve the high-value utilization of heavy tar for the production of enhanced-performance graphite foam carbon, the carbon mesophase was ready from the heavy component of low-temperature coal tar, and the coal tar was modified by styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), polyethylene (PE) and ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA) copolymers. The order degree of the carbonite mesophase was analyzed using a polarizing microscope test, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to screen out the most suitable copolymer type and addition amount. Furthermore, the mechanism of modification by this copolymer was analyzed. The results showed that adding SBS, PE and EVA to coal tar would affect the order of carbonaceous mesophase; however, at an addition rate of 10.0 wt.%, the linear-structure SBS copolymer with a styrene/butadiene ratio (S/B) of 30/70 exhibited the optimal degree of ordering in the carbonaceous mesophase. Its foam carbon prepared by polymer modification is the only one that forms a graphitized structure, with d002 of 0.3430 nm, and the maximum values of Lc and La are 3.54 nm and 2.22 nm, respectively. This is because, under elevated pressure and high-temperature conditions, SBS underwent chain scission, releasing a more significant number of methyl and other free radicals that interacted with the coal tar constituents. As a result, it reduced the affinity density of heavy coal tar molecules, enhanced fluidity, promoted the stacking of condensed aromatic hydrocarbons and increased the content of soluble carbonaceous mesophase, ultimately leading to a more favorable alignment of the carbonaceous mesophase.

Polymeric Micelles as Drug Delivery System: Recent Advances, Approaches, Applications and Patents

Administering therapeutics through the oral route is a pervasive and widely approved medication administration approach. However, it has been found that many drugs show low systemic absorption when delivered through this route. Such limitations of oral drug delivery can be overcome by polymeric micelles acting as vehicles. As a result, they improve drug absorption by protecting loaded drug substances from the gastrointestinal system's hostile conditions, allowing controlled drug release at a specific site, extending the time spent in the gut through mucoadhesion, and inhibiting the efflux pump from reducing therapeutic agent accumulation. To promote good oral absorption of a weakly water-soluble medicinal drug, the loaded medicine should be protected from the hostile atmosphere of the GI tract. Polymeric micelles can be stacked with a broad assortment of ineffectively dissolvable medications, improving bioavailability. This review discusses the major mechanism, various types, advantages, and limitations for developing the polymeric micelle system and certain micellar drug delivery system applications. The primary goal of this review is to illustrate how polymeric micelles can be used to deliver poorly water-soluble medications.

A Fluorine-Containing Main-Chain Benzoxazine/Epoxy Co-Curing System with Low Dielectric Constants and High Thermal Stability

A fluorine-containing main-chain benzoxazine (BAF-M-TB) was co-cured with biphenyl epoxy for the integrated circuit industry. The benzoxazine precursor was synthesized using 4,4'-(Hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphenol (bisphenol AF), 2,2'-Dimethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-Diamine(M-TB), and paraformaldehyde. In addition, the 3,3'-(Oxybis(4,1-phenylene))bis(3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[e][1,3]oxazine) (Benoxazine ODA-BOZ), which is a commercialized benzoxazine, was co-cured with biphenyl epoxy as a control. The two co-curing systems were referred to as EP/BAF-M-TB and EP/ODA-BOZ. The curing kinetics, rheological behavior, and thermal stability of the two co-curing systems were studied. Poly-EP/BAF-M-TB and poly-EP/ODA-BOZ quartz fiber cloth reinforced composites (QFRPs) were prepared using the prepreg laminating method in order to determine their mechanical, thermal, and dielectric properties. Both of them showed good thermal properties and dielectric properties. The dielectric constant of poly-EP/BAF-M-TB QFRP is in the range of 3.25-3.54 at the low frequency of 10 kHz-10 MHz. At the high frequency of 5 GHz, its dielectric constant is 3.16, which is better than that of poly-EP/ODA-BOZ QFRP. Additionally, the Td5 of poly-EP/BAF-M-TB was 398 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere, which is higher than that of poly-EP/ODA-BOZ.

Polyacrylate-graft-polypyrrole Copolymer as Intrinsically Elastic Electrodes for Stretchable Supercapacitors

Constructing elastic electrodes with high mechanical and electrochemical stability remains a challenge in developing flexible supercapacitors. Instability of elastic composite electrodes stems from detachment of noncovalently associated electroactive components from elastic substrates under cyclic deformations. Herein, a novel all-organic copolymer consisting of polypyrrole grafted from a polyacrylate elastomer is proposed as elastic electrodes for stretchable supercapacitors. The single copolymer is obtained by graft polymerization in the swollen state, characterized by a wrinkled polypyrrole coating covalently attached on an elastic core. The copolymer is intrinsically elastic and maintains structural integrity under bending, twisting, and stretching deformations to ensure stable electrochemical performance. In addition, the grafted polypyrrole aggregates densely under the constraint of the backbone and gives a competitive conductivity of 41.6 S cm-1. A stretchable supercapacitor is constructed using the copolymer as electrodes and an acid hydrogel as an electrolyte, resulting in a specific capacitance of 430 mF cm-2. The supercapacitor delivers a capacitance retention of 100% after 1000 stretching-releasing cycles, exhibiting mechanical and electrochemical reliability under elastic deformations.

Polyaniline-co-polyindole functionalized magnetic porous carbon derived from MIL-53(Fe) for separation/enrichment of nitrophenols pollutants before determination with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection

Herein, a novel polyaniline-co-polyindole functionalized magnetic porous carbon derived from MIL-53(Fe) was prepared and employed as an excellent nano-adsorbent to preconcentrate trace amounts of nitro-phenols in water and wastewater samples. Briefly, magnetic MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized by the addition of magnetite nanoparticles, terephthalic acid, and FeCl3 to the reaction medium. The magnetic MIL-53(Fe) was pyrolyzed under nitrogen protection to obtain a magnetic porous carbon nanocomposite, and finally, the nanomaterial was functionalized with polyaniline-co-polyindole via oxidation polymerization. The obtained nano-adsorbent was characterized via X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and transmission and scanning electron microscopies. After that, the fabricated nano-material was utilized as an excellent nano-adsorbent for the preconcentration of trace nitro-phenols (2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol) in environmental water, and wastewater samples. The detection limits were obtained from 0.1 to 0.15 μg/L after performing the optimization process. The new method was in the range of 0.4-300 μg/L. The proposed method exhibited a good precision from 3.2% to 9.6% for within-day assay, and 5.2%-13.2% for between-day assay at three concentration levels (1, 50, and 250 μg/L). Eventually, this method was utilized to preconcentrate/determine the target analytes in three water, and wastewater samples, satisfactory (relative standard deviations, 5.4%-9.3%; relative recovery, 88%-109%).

Design, Synthesis, and Comparison of PLA-PEG-PLA and PEG-PLA-PEG Copolymers for Curcumin Delivery to Cancer Cells

Curcumin (CUR) has potent anticancer activities, and its bioformulations, including biodegradable polymers, are increasingly able to improve CUR's solubility, stability, and delivery to cancer cells. In this study, copolymers comprising poly (L-lactide)-poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (L-lactide) (PLA-PEG-PLA) and poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (L-lactide)-poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG-PLA-PEG) were designed and synthesized to assess and compare their CUR-delivery capacity and inhibitory potency on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Molecular dynamics simulations and free energy analysis indicated that PLA-PEG-PLA has a higher propensity to interact with the cell membrane and more negative free energy, suggesting it is the better carrier for cell membrane penetration. To characterize the copolymer synthesis, Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR) were employed, copolymer size was measured using dynamic light scattering (DLS), and their surface charge was determined by zeta potential analysis. Characterization indicated that the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) reaction was optimal for synthesizing high-quality polymers. Microspheres comprising the copolymers were then synthesized successfully. Of the two formulations, PLA-PEG-PLA experimentally exhibited better results, with an initial burst release of 17.5%, followed by a slow, constant release of the encapsulated drug up to 80%. PLA-PEG-PLA-CUR showed a significant increase in cell death in MCF-7 cancer cells (IC₅₀ = 23.01 ± 0.85 µM) based on the MTT assay. These data were consistent with gene expression studies of Bax, Bcl2, and hTERT, which showed that PLA-PEG-PLA-CUR induced apoptosis more efficiently in these cells. Through the integration of nano-informatics and in vitro approaches, our study determined that PLA-PEG-PLA-CUR is an optimal system for delivering curcumin to inhibit cancer cells.

Highly Sensitive Detection of Bacteria by Binder-Coupled Multifunctional Polymeric Dyes

Infectious diseases caused by pathogens are a health burden, but traditional pathogen identification methods are complex and time-consuming. In this work, we have developed well-defined, multifunctional copolymers with rhodamine B dye synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using fully oxygen-tolerant photoredox/copper dual catalysis. ATRP enabled the efficient synthesis of copolymers with multiple fluorescent dyes from a biotin-functionalized initiator. Biotinylated dye copolymers were conjugated to antibody (Ab) or cell-wall binding domain (CBD), resulting in a highly fluorescent polymeric dye-binder complex. We showed that the unique combination of multifunctional polymeric dyes and strain-specific Ab or CBD exhibited both enhanced fluorescence and target selectivity for bioimaging of Staphylococcus aureus by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. The ATRP-derived polymeric dyes have the potential as biosensors for the detection of target DNA, protein, or bacteria, as well as bioimaging.

Fouling Resistance of Brush-Modified Elastomers

The most effective antifouling coatings are designed to slowly release biocides that target a broad spectrum of marine organisms. However, as biocides have a deleterious effect on marine life, there is demand for environmentally friendly coatings that resist fouling through physical interactions. We propose a simple platform for the development of such coatings based on bottlebrush-modified elastomers. The bottlebrush additives were synthesized to have side chain chemistries that are known to be fouling-resistant, and these were incorporated in a commercial elastomer through blending and/or covalent attachment. The fouling performance of these coatings was highly variable, with area coverages of hard and soft foulants ranging from 1.4% to 7.2% and 29.1% to 64.0%, respectively, across a set of eight materials. The origin of these differences was explained by examining the structure of the coating surface through chemical imaging by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and topographic imaging by atomic force microscopy (AFM). We found that fouling by certain soft and hard fouling organisms was primarily influenced by surface composition, which was controlled by both the chemistry and loading level of the bottlebrush additive, and was independent of the inherent surface roughness. While no type of coating could resist all soft and hard foulants, a formulation based on a bottlebrush copolymer additive with both siloxane and fluorinated monomers was effective against nearly all organisms encountered in the study.

Quantification of the Monomer Compositions of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and Poly(3-hydroxyvalerate) by Alkaline Hydrolysis and Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

With the growing interest in bioplastics, there is an urgent need to develop rapid analysis methods linked to production technology development. This study focused on the production of a commercially non-available homopolymer, poly(3-hydroxyvalerate) (P(3HV)), and a commercially available copolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (P(3HB-co-3HV)), through fermentation using two different bacterial strains. The bacteria Chromobacterium violaceum and Bacillus sp. CYR1 were used to produce P(3HV) and P(3HB-co-3HV), respectively. The bacterium Bacillus sp. CYR1 produced 415 mg/L of P(3HB-co-3HV) when incubated with acetic acid and valeric acid as the carbon sources, whereas the bacterium C. violaceum produced 0.198 g of P(3HV)/g dry biomass when incubated with sodium valerate as the carbon source. Additionally, we developed a fast, simple, and inexpensive method to quantify P(3HV) and P(3HB-co-3HV) using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). As the alkaline decomposition of P(3HB-co-3HV) releases 2-butenoic acid (2BE) and 2-pentenoic acid (2PE), we were able to determine the concentration using HPLC. Moreover, calibration curves were prepared using standard 2BE and 2PE, along with sample 2BE and 2PE produced by the alkaline decomposition of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and P(3HV), respectively. Finally, the HPLC results obtained by our new method were compared using gas chromatography (GC) analysis.

Hydrophobic-Hydrophilic Block Copolymer Mediated Tuning of Halide Perovskite Photosensitive Device Stability and Efficiency

The polymer additive strategy provides a facile and cost-effective way for passivating defects and trap sites at the grain boundaries and interfaces and acting as a barrier against the external degradation factors in perovskite-based devices. However, limited literature exists discussing the integration of hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymer additives in the form of a copolymer within the perovskite films. The inherent difference in the chemical structure of these polymers and their interaction with perovskite components and the environment leads to critical differences in the respective polymer-perovskite films. The current work utilizes both homopolymer and copolymer strategies to understand the effect of polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), two common commodity polymers, over the physicochemical and electro-optical properties of the as-fabricated devices and the distribution of polymer chains across the depth of perovskite films. The hydrophobic PS integrated perovskite devices PS-MAPbI₃, 36 PS-b-1.4-PEG-MAPbI₃, and 21.5 PS-b-20-PEG-MAPbI₃ outperform hydrophilic PEG-MAPbI₃ and pristine MAPbI₃ devices and exhibit higher photocurrent, lower dark currents, and greater stability. A critical difference is also observed in the stability of devices, where rapid decay of performance is observed in the pristine MAPbI₃ films. The deterioration in performance is highly limited for hydrophobic polymer-MAPbI₃ films as they maintain 80% of their initial performance.

The Role of Stabilizing Copolymer in Determining the Physicochemical Properties of Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles and Their Nanomedical Applications

Conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) are a promising class of nanomaterials for biomedical applications, such as bioimaging, gene and drug delivery/release, photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and environmental sensing. Over the past decade, many reports have been published detailing their synthesis and their various potential applications, including some very comprehensive reviews of these topics. In contrast, there is a distinct lack of overview of the role the stabilizing copolymer shells have on the properties of CPNs. This review attempts to correct this oversight by scrutinizing reports detailing the synthesis and application of CPNs stabilized with some commonly-used copolymers, namely F127 (Pluronic poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate), PSMA (poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride)), PLGA (poly(D, L-lactide-co-glycolide)) and PEG (polyethylene glycol) derivatives. The analysis of the reported physicochemical properties and biological applications of these CPNs provides insights into the advantages of each group of copolymers for specific applications and offers a set of guidance criteria for the selection of an appropriate copolymer when designing CPNs-based probes. Finally, the challenges and outlooks in the field are highlighted.

Application of Self-Assembled Polyarylether Substrate in Flexible Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

The structure used in this study is as follows: substrate/PMMA/ZnS/Ag/MoO3/NPB/Alq3/LiF/Al. Here, PMMA serves as the surface flattening layer, ZnS/Ag/MoO3 as the anode, NPB as the hole injection layer, Alq3 as the emitting layer, LiF as the electron injection layer, and aluminum as the cathode. The properties of the devices with different substrates were investigated using P4 and glass, developed in the laboratory, as well as commercially available PET. After film formation, P4 creates holes on the surface. The light field distribution of the device was calculated at wavelengths of 480 nm, 550 nm, and 620 nm using optical simulation. It was found that this microstructure contributes to light extraction. The maximum brightness, external quantum efficiency, and current efficiency of the device at a P4 thickness of 2.6 μm were 72,500 cd/m², 1.69%, and 5.68 cd/A, respectively. However, the maximum brightness of the same structure with PET (130 μm) was 9500 cd/m². The microstructure of the P4 substrate was found to contribute to the excellent device performance through analysis of the AFM surface morphology, film resistance, and optical simulation results. The holes formed by the P4 substrate were created solely by spin-coating the material and then placing it on a heating plate to dry, without any special processing. To confirm the reproducibility of the naturally formed holes, devices were fabricated again with three different emitting layer thicknesses. The maximum brightness, external quantum efficiency, and current efficiency of the device at an Alq3 thickness of 55 nm were 93,400 cd/m², 1.7%, and 5.6 cd/A, respectively.

Polyether-Thiourea-Siloxane Copolymer Based on H-Bonding Interaction for Marine Antifouling

By introducing thiourea and ether groups into MQ silicone resin polymer via free radical polymerization, a polyether-thiourea-siloxane (PTS) copolymer was synthesized. The characterization of the synthesized copolymer indicated the occurrence of H-bonding interactions and a narrow molecular weight polydispersity index. Antifouling coatings were produced by incorporating the synthesized copolymer and phenylmethylsilicone oil (PSO). The addition of a minute amount of copolymer enhanced the hydrophobicity of the coating by increasing its surface roughness. However, excessive addition of copolymer resulted in a significant deterioration of the coating surface smoothness. The copolymer improved the mechanical properties of the coating, but excessive addition decreased the crosslinking density and weakened the mechanical performance. With increasing copolymer addition, the leaching of PSO was significantly improved due to the change in the storage form of PSO in the coating caused by the copolymer. Based on the H-bonding interaction of the copolymer, the adhesion strength between the coating and the substrate was significantly improved. However, excessive addition of copolymer did not infinitely enhance the adhesion strength. The antifouling performance demonstrated that an appropriate amount of copolymer could obtain adequate PSO leaching efficiency, thereby effectively enhancing the antifouling performance of the coating. In this study, the prepared coating P₁₂ (12 g of PTS in 100 g of PDMS) showed the most effective antifouling performance.

Nitroxide-Containing Amphiphilic Random Terpolymers for Marine Antifouling and Fouling-Release Coatings

Two types of amphiphilic random terpolymers, poly(ethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate)-ran-poly(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy methacrylate)-ran-poly(polydimethyl siloxane methacrylate) (PEGMEMA-r-PTMA-r-PDMSMA), were synthesized and evaluated for antifouling (AF) and fouling-release (FR) properties using diverse marine fouling organisms. In the first stage of production, the two respective precursor amine terpolymers containing (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl methacrylate) units (PEGMEMA-r-PTMPM-r-PDMSMA) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization using various comonomer ratios and two initiators: alkyl halide and fluoroalkyl halide. In the second stage, these were selectively oxidized to introduce nitroxide radical functionalities. Finally, the terpolymers were incorporated into a PDMS host matrix to create coatings. AF and FR properties were examined using the alga Ulva linza, the barnacle Balanus improvisus, and the tubeworm Ficopomatus enigmaticus. The effects of comonomer ratios on surface properties and fouling assay results for each set of coatings are discussed in detail. There were marked differences in the effectiveness of these systems against the different fouling organisms. The terpolymers had distinct advantages over monopolymeric systems across the different organisms, and the nonfluorinated PEG and nitroxide combination was identified as the most effective formulation against B. improvisus and F. enigmaticus.

A porous swelling copolymeric material for improved implant fixation to bone

Most metallic commercial bone anchors, such as screws and suture anchors achieve their fixation to bone through shear of the bone located between the threads. They have several deficiencies, potentially leading to failure, which are particularly evident in low-density bone. These include stress-shielding resulting from mechanical properties mismatch; lack of mechanically induced remodeling and osteointegration; and when the pullout force on the anchor, during functional activities, exceeds their pullout strength, catastrophic failure occurs leaving behind large bone defects that may be hard to repair. To overcome these deficiencies, we introduced in this study a porous swelling co-polymeric material and studied its swelling and compressive mechanical characteristics as bone anchor under different configurations. Porosity was achieved by adding a non-dissolvable agent (NaCl) during the process of polymerization, which was later dissolved in water, leaving behind a porous structure with adequate porosity for osteointegration. Three different groups of cylindrical samples of the swelling co-polymer were investigated. Solid, fully porous, and partially porous with a solid core and a porous outer layer. The results of the swelling and simple compression study show that the partially porous swelling co-polymer maintains excellent mechanical properties matching those of cancellous bone, quick swelling response, and an adequate porous outer layer for mechanically induced osteointegration. These suggest that this material may present an effective alternative to conventional bone anchors particularly in low-density bone.

P188 Therapy in In Vitro Models of Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Varied mechanisms of injury contribute to the heterogeneity of this patient population as demonstrated by the multiple published grading scales and diverse required criteria leading to diagnoses from mild to severe. TBI pathophysiology is classically separated into a primary injury that is characterized by local tissue destruction as a result of the initial blow, followed by a secondary phase of injury constituted by a score of incompletely understood cellular processes including reperfusion injury, disruption to the blood-brain barrier, excitotoxicity, and metabolic dysregulation. There are currently no effective pharmacological treatments in the wide-spread use for TBI, in large part due to challenges associated with the development of clinically representative in vitro and in vivo models. Poloxamer 188 (P188), a Food and Drug Administration-approved amphiphilic triblock copolymer embeds itself into the plasma membrane of damaged cells. P188 has been shown to have neuroprotective properties on various cell types. The objective of this review is to provide a summary of the current literature on in vitro models of TBI treated with P188.

Hybrid Nanomat: Copolymer Template CdSe Quantum Dots In Situ Stabilized and Immobilized within Nanofiber Matrix

Fabrication and characterization of hybrid nanomats containing quantum dots can play a prominent role in the development of advanced biosensors and bio-based semiconductors. Owing to their size-dependent properties and controlled nanostructures, quantum dots (QDs) exhibit distinct optical and electronic characteristics. However, QDs include heavy metals and often require stabilizing agents which are toxic for biological applications. Here, to mitigate the use of toxic ligands, cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) were synthesized in situ with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at room temperature. The addition of PVP polymer provided size regulation, stability, and control over size distribution of CdSe QDs. The characterization of the optical properties of the CdSe QDs was performed using fluorescence and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. CdSe QDs exhibited a typical absorbance peak at 280 nm and a photoluminescence emission peak at 580 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs demonstrated that CdSe QDs having an average size of 6 ± 4 nm were obtained via wet chemistry method. CdSe QDs were immobilized in a blend of PVP and poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PL-b-CL) copolymer that was electrospun to produce nanofibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal analyses and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were used to characterize properties of fabricated nanofibers. Both pristine and hybrid nanofibers possessed cylindrical geometry and rough surface features, facilitating increased surface area. Infrared absorption spectra showed a slight shift in absorbance peaks due to interaction of PVP-coated CdSe QDs and nanofiber matrix. The presence of CdSe QDs influenced the fiber diameter and their thermal stability. Further, in vitro biological analyses of hybrid nanofibers showed promising antibacterial effect and decline in cancer cell viability. This study offers a simple approach to obtain hybrid nanomats immobilized with size-controlled PVP-coated CdSe QDs, which have potential applications as biosensors and antibacterial and anticancer cell agents.

A Novel Cationic Polymer Surfactant for Regulation of the Rheological and Biocidal Properties of the Water-Based Drilling Muds

The copolymer of N,N-diallyl-N,N-dimethylammonium chloride and N-[3-(Dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide (DADMAC-DMAPMA) was synthesized by radical polymerization reaction in an aqueous solution in the presence of the initiator ammonium persulfate (NH₄)₂S₂O₈. The molar compositions of the synthesized copolymers were determined using FTIR and ¹H NMR-spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and conductometric titration. It was found that in the radical copolymerization reaction, the DMAPMA monomer was more active than the DADMAC monomer; for this reason, the resulting copolymers were always enriched in the DMAPMA monomers. The study of the influence of the DADMAC-DMAPMA copolymer on structure-formation in the bentonite suspension showed that this copolymer significantly increased the static shear stress (SSS) of the system. In this case, the structure-forming properties of the copolymer depended on the pH of the medium. The lower the pH level, the better the structure-formation was in the suspension in the presence of the copolymer. The study of antibacterial activity showed that the DADMAC-DMAPMA copolymer had a biocidal effect against sulfate-reducing bacteria (CRB) at a concentration of not less than 0.05 wt.% and can be used to inhibit the growth of this bacteria.

Investigation of the Conditions for the Synthesis of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) ATRP Macroinitiator

One of the most widely used conductive polymers in the growing conductive polymer industry is poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), whose main advantages are good thermal and chemical stability, a conjugated backbone, and ease of functionalization. The main drawback of PEDOT for use as wearable electronics is the lack of stretchable and self-healing properties. This can be overcome by grafting PEDOT with flexible side branches. As pure PEDOT is highly stable and grafting would not be possible, a new bromine-functionalized thiophene derivative, 2-(tiophen-3-yl) ethyl 2-bromo-2-methylpropanoate (ThBr), was synthesized and copolymerized with EDOT for the synthesis of a poly(EDOT-co-ThBr) ATRP macroinitiator. After the synthesis of the macroinitiator, flexible polymers could be introduced as side branches by atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to modify mechanical properties. Before this last synthesis step, the conditions for the synthesis of the ATRP macroinitiator should be investigated, as only functionalized units can function as grafting sites. In this study, nine new copolymers with different monomer ratios were synthesized to investigate the reactivity of each monomer. The ratios used in the different syntheses were ThBr:EDOT = 1:0.2, 1:0.4, 1:0.6, 1:0.8, 1:1, 0.8:1, 0.6:1, 0.4:1, and 0.2:1. In order to determine the effect of reaction time on the final properties of the polymer, macroinitiator synthesis at a 1:1 ratio was carried out at different time periods: 8 h, 16 h, 24 h, and 48 h. The obtained products were characterized by different techniques, and it was found that polymerizations longer than 24 h yielded practically insoluble macroinitiators, thus limiting its further application. Reactivity ratios of both monomers were found to be similar and close to 1, making the copolymerization reaction symmetrical and the obtained macroinitiators almost random copolymers.

Exploring Class I polyhydroxyalkanoate synthases with broad substrate specificity for polymerization of structurally diverse monomer units

Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthases (PhaCs) are key enzymes in PHA polymerization. PhaCs with broad substrate specificity are attractive for synthesizing structurally diverse PHAs. In the PHA family, 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB)-based copolymers are industrially produced using Class I PhaCs and can be used as practical biodegradable thermoplastics. However, Class I PhaCs with broad substrate specificities are scarce, prompting our search for novel PhaCs. In this study, four new PhaCs from the bacteria Ferrimonas marina, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Shewanella pealeana, and Vibrio metschnikovii were selected via a homology search against the GenBank database, using the amino acid sequence of Aeromonas caviae PHA synthase (PhaC_Ac), a Class I enzyme with a wide range of substrate specificities, as a template. The four PhaCs were characterized in terms of their polymerization ability and substrate specificity, using Escherichia coli as a host for PHA production. All the new PhaCs were able to synthesize P(3HB) in E. coli with a high molecular weight, surpassing PhaC_Ac. The substrate specificity of PhaCs was evaluated by synthesizing 3HB-based copolymers with 3-hydroxyhexanoate, 3-hydroxy-4-methylvalerate, 3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrate, and 3-hydroxypivalate monomers. Interestingly, PhaC from P. shigelloides (PhaC_Ps) exhibited relatively broad substrate specificity. PhaC_Ps was further engineered through site-directed mutagenesis, and the variant resulted in an enzyme with improved polymerization ability and substrate specificity.

Effect of Ultraviolet Activation on Sub-ppm NO2 Sensing Dynamics of Poly(3-hexylthiophene)-Bearing Graft Copolymers

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) sensors utilising graft copolymers bearing poly(3-hexylthiophene) chains have been developed and investigated in terms of their operation parameters using different carrier gases (N₂ or air) and in either dark conditions or with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Interestingly, sensor performance improved upon transition from N₂ to air, with the inverse being true for most NO₂ sensors. UV irradiation both improved sensor dynamics and stabilised the sensor electrical baseline, allowing sensors based on SilPEG to fulfil the requirements of sensing solutions used in industry (below 10% baseline drift after sensors reach saturation) and making them promising candidates for further development and applications. Based on conducted multi-variate experiments, an initial mechanism underlying the interplay of exposure to oxygen (present in air) and UV irradiation was postulated.

Effect of Recycling on the Mechanical, Thermal and Rheological Properties of Polypropylene/Carbon Nanotube Composites

In this research the effect of physical recycling on the mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of polypropylene (PP)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was investigated. After melt homogenization by extrusion, specimens were injection moulded with 0.1 and 0.5 wt% MWCNT content. The recycling process was simulated by multiple grinding and re-moulding, then we compared the behavior of original and recycled PP/MWCNT composites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements proved that MWCNT had double the effect on the morphology of the PP matrix: on the one hand nucleating effect can be detected because 0.5 wt% MWCNT increased the onset temperature of crystallization by 10 °C, compared to the basic PP material; on the other hand, the crystalline fraction of the recycled composite materials decreased compared to the original PP material with the same MWCNT content. This resulted in a slight decrease in strength and stiffness but an increase in elongation at break. However, compared to the original unreinforced PP reference, even the recycled materials have better properties. The mechanical test results showed that recycled PP/MWCNT 0.5 wt% increased the elastic modulus (~15%) and decreased the tensile strain at yield (~10%). However, in the values of tensile stress at yield, relevant difference was not found. It was also shown by oscillatory rheometry that MWCNT had a significant effect on the rheological properties (storage and loss modulus, complex viscosity) of PP compounds in a wide temperature range (190-230 °C).

Anionic Copolymers with Different Charge Densities for Regulating the Properties of Cement Pastes

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is an extremely flowable concrete, which increases the probability of segregation and bleeding. Viscosity-modifying admixtures (VMAs) have been developed to improve the stability of SCC. Synthetic polymer VMAs have excellent water solubility and stability, and can be easily chemically prepared and modified. In this work, a series of copolymers based on anionic 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and nonionic N, N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAA), with similar molecular weights but different charge densities, were prepared. The effect of the charge density of the anionic polymers on the fluidity, rheological property, and adsorption behavior of the cement pastes was investigated. The action mechanism of the polymers was discussed. The results indicate that the charge density of anionic polymer VMAs is of great significance for the development of cost-effective SCCs with good rheological properties.

Microstructure-Thermal Property Relationships of Poly (Ethylene Glycol-b-Caprolactone) Copolymers and Their Micelles

The crystallinity of polymers strongly affects their properties. For block copolymers, whereby two crystallisable blocks are covalently tethered to one another, the molecular weight of the individual blocks and their relative weight fraction are important structural parameters that control their crystallisation. In the case of block copolymer micelles, these parameters can influence the crystallinity of the core, which has implications for drug encapsulation and release. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine how the microstructure of poly(ethylene glycol-b-caprolactone) (PEG-b-PCL) copolymers contributes to the crystallinity of their hydrophobic PCL micelle cores. Using a library of PEG-b-PCL copolymers with PEG number-average molecular weight (Mn) values of 2, 5, and 10 kDa and weight fractions of PCL (fPCL) ranging from 0.11 to 0.67, the thermal behaviour and morphology were studied in blends, bulk, and micelles using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD), and Synchrotron wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Compared to PEG and PCL homopolymers, the block copolymers displayed reduced crystallinity in the bulk phase and the individual blocks had a large influence on the crystallisation of one another. The fPCL was determined to be the dominant contributor to the extent and order of crystallisation of the two blocks. When fPCL < 0.35, the initial crystallisation of PEG led to an amorphous PCL phase. At fPCL values between 0.35 and 0.65, PEG crystallisation was followed by PCL crystallisation, whereas this behaviour was reversed when fPCL > 0.65. For lyophilised PEG-b-PCL micelles, the crystallinity of the core increased with increasing fPCL, although the core was predominately amorphous for micelles with fPCL < 0.35. These findings contribute to understanding the relationships between copolymer microstructure and micelle core crystallinity that are important for the design and performance of micellar drug delivery systems, and the broader application of polymer micelles.

Thermo-Sensitive Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-polyacrylamide) Hydrogel for pH-Responsive Therapeutic Delivery

Stimuli-response polymeric nanoparticles have emerged as a carrier system for various types of therapeutic delivery. In this study, we prepared a dual pH- and thermo-sensitive copolymer hydrogel (HG) system (PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG), using N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAm) and acrylamide (AAm) as comonomers. The synthesized PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG was characterized using various instrumental characterizations. Moreover, the PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG's thermoresponsive phase transition behavior was investigated, and the results showed that the prepared HG responds to temperature changes. In vitro drug loading and release behavior of PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG was investigated using Curcumin (Cur) as the model cargo under different pH and temperature conditions. The PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG showed pH and temperature-responsive drug release behavior and demonstrated about 65% Cur loading efficiency. A nearly complete release of the loaded Cur occurred from the PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG over 4 h at pH 5.5 and 40 °C. The cytotoxicity study was performed on a liver cancer cell line (HepG2 cells), which revealed that the prepared PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG showed good biocompatibility, suggesting that it could be applied as a drug delivery carrier. Moreover, the in vitro cytocompatibility test (MTT assay) results revealed that the PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG is biocompatible. Therefore, the PNIPAm-co-PAAm HG has the potential to be useful in the delivery of drugs in solid tumor-targeted therapy.

Preparation of Solid Self-Nanoemulsifying Drug Delivery Systems (S-SNEDDS) by Co-Extrusion of Liquid SNEDDS and Polymeric Carriers-A New and Promising Formulation Approach to Improve the Solubility of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs

The present study focused on a new formulation approach to improving the solubility of drugs with poor aqueous solubility. A hot melt extrusion (HME) process was applied to prepare drug-loaded solid self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems (S-SNEDDS) by co-extrusion of liquid SNEDDS (L-SNEDDS) and different polymeric carriers. Experiments were performed with L-SNEDDS formulations containing celecoxib, efavirenz or fenofibrate as model drugs. A major objective was to identify a polymeric carrier and process parameters that would enable the preparation of stable S-SNEDDS without impairing the release behavior and storage stability of the L-SNEDDS used and, if possible, even improving them further. In addition to commercially available (co)polymers already used in the field of HME, a particular focus was on the evaluation of different variants of a recently developed aminomethacrylate-based copolymer (ModE) that differed in M_w. Immediately after preparation, the L-SNEDDS and S-SNEDDS formulations were tested for amorphicity by differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, solubility and dissolution tests were performed. In addition, the storage stability was investigated at 30 °C/65% RH over a period of three and six months, respectively. In all cases, amorphous formulations were obtained and, especially for the model drug celecoxib, S-SNEDDS were developed that maintained the rapid and complete drug release of the underlying L-SNEDDS even over an extended storage period. Overall, the data obtained in this study suggest that the presented S-SNEDDS approach is very promising, provided that drug-loaded L-SNEDDS are co-processed with a suitable polymeric carrier. In the case of celecoxib, the E-173 variant of the novel ModE copolymer proved to be a novel polymeric carrier with great potential for application in S-SNEDDS. The presented approach will, therefore, be pursued in future studies to establish S-SNEDDS as an alternative formulation to other amorphous systems.

Synthetic Nanoscale RNAi Constructs as Pesticides for the Control of Locust Migratoria

The low efficiency of RNA interference (RNAi) in insects via the oral administration of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is a considerable obstacle preventing its application in insect pest control. The instability of dsRNA and insufficient dsRNA uptake are known to limit the RNAi efficiency. To overcome these limitations, the block copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-polylysine(thiol) [PEG-PLys(SH)] was designed in this study to form well-defined, core-shell nanoparticles to protect dsRNA from premature degradation and to facilitate its movement through various physiological barriers. The developed material had excellent structural stability and dsRNA-protecting capacity, thereby enabling the prolonged survival of dsRNA in the digestive tract for endocytosis into the midgut cells of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria. After encapsulation of a dsLmCHS2 payload (a midgut gene), a 60% down-regulation of LmCHS2, accompanied with observations of amorphous and discontinuous linings of the peritrophic matrix and abnormal phenotypes, was observed. In addition, the elaborated nanoscale dsRNA condensates appeared to readily extravasate through the narrow fenestrations in the linings of midgut epithelial cells into the hemolymph and be distributed throughout the body. After encapsulation of a dsLmCHS1 payload (a cuticle gene), a distinctive lethal phenotype with molting failure was observed as a result of a 50% down-regulation in LmCHS1. The persistent leaf adherence of these dsRNA constructs was also capable of resisting continuous rinsing. Therefore, these dsRNA constructs represent a robust type of RNAi pesticide, which has potential as a versatile pesticide against a variety of molecular targets for the control of destructive insects and insects resistant to conventional pesticides.

Recent Studies on the Preparation and Application of Ionic Amphiphilic Lignin: A Comprehensive Review

As the second most abundant natural polymer after cellulose, lignin has received considerable attention recently due to its reproducibility, safety, and biodegradability. Studies are now focusing on the development of new lignin applications to replace petroleum-based chemicals. Unfortunately, lignin has several inherent problems, such as poor water solubility and a tendency to agglomerate. However, after chemical modification, lignin can gain new functions through the introduction of new functional groups. For example, amphiphilic lignin is a polymer that is soluble in both water and organic solvents. Amphiphilic lignin polymers can be divided into anionic, cationic, and anionic-cationic amphoteric lignin-based polymers, according to the ions contained in their molecular structure. Amphiphilic lignin polymers also have a wide range of applications in various industrial fields and can be used as wetting agents, detergents, controlled release fertilizers, adsorbents, and emulsifiers. Thus, this article reviews research progress on the synthesis and applications of amphiphilic lignin-derived polymers over the past 10 years, providing a theoretical reference for the utilization of high-added-value and high-performance lignin.

Preparation and Characterization of Novel Microgels Containing Nano-SiO2 and Copolymeric Hydrogel Based on Poly (Acrylamide) and Poly (Acrylic Acid): Morphological, Structural and Swelling Studies

In this paper, novel microgels containing nano-SiO₂ were prepared by in situ copolymerization using nano-SiO₂ particles as a reinforcing agent, nanosilica functional monomer (silane-modified nano-SiO₂) as a structure and morphology director, acrylamide (AAm) as a monomer, acrylic acid (AAc) as a comonomer, potassium persulfate (KPS) as a polymerization initiator, and N,N'-methylene bis (acrylamide) (MBA) as a crosslinker. In addition, a conventional copolymeric hydrogel based on poly (acrylamide/acrylic acid) was synthesized by solution polymerization. The microgel samples, hydrogel and nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A FESEM micrograph of copolymeric hydrogel showed the high porosity and 3D interconnected microstructure. Furthermore, FESEM results demonstrated that when nano-SiO₂ particles were used in the AAm/AAc copolymerization process, the microstructure and morphology of product changed from porous hydrogel to a nanocomposite microgel with cauliflower-like morphology. According to FESEM images, the copolymerization of AAm and AAc monomers with a nanosilica functional monomer or polymerizable nanosilica particle as a seed led to a microgel with core-shell structure and morphology. These results demonstrated that the polymerizable vinyl group on nano-SiO₂ particles have controlled the copolymerization and the product morphology. FTIR analysis showed that the copolymeric chains of polyacrylamide (PAAm) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAAc) were chemically bonded to the surfaces of the nano-SiO₂ particles and silane-modified nano-SiO₂. The particulate character of microgel samples and the existence of long distance among aggregations of particles led to rapid swelling and increasing of porosity and therefore increasing of degree of swelling.

Amphiphilic Crosslinked Four-Armed Poly(lactic-co-glycolide) Electrospun Membranes for Enhancing Cell Adhesion

Common poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (i-PLGA) has emerged as a biodegradable and biocompatible material in tissue engineering. However, the poor hydrophilicity and elasticity of i-PLGA lead to its limited application in tissue engineering. To this end, an amphiphilic crosslinked four-armed poly(lactic-co-glycolide) was prepared. First, four-armed PLGA (4A-PLGA) was synthesized by polymerizing l-lactide (LA) and glycolide (GA) with pentaerythritol as the initiator. Then, the hydrophilic polymer poly(glutamate propylene ester) (PGPE) was prepared through the esterification of glutamic acid and 1,2-propanediol. The hydrophilic 4A-PLGA-PGPE was finally synthesized through the condensation reaction of 4A-PLGA and PGPE with the aid of triphosgene. 4A-PLGA-PGPE was then used to prepare amphiphilic membranes by electrospinning. It was demonstrated that the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of 4A-PLGA were improved after the introduction of PGPE. Furthermore, the introduction of glutamate improved the hydrophilicity of 4A-PLGA, thus effectively promoting cell entry and adhesion, which makes the electrospun 4A-PLGA-PGPE membranes promising for tissue engineering.

Assembly and architecture of Escherichia coli divisome proteins FtsA and FtsZ

During Escherichia coli cell division, an intracellular complex of cell division proteins known as the Z-ring assembles at midcell during early division and serves as the site of constriction. While the predominant protein in the Z-ring is the widely conserved tubulin homolog FtsZ, the actin homolog FtsA tethers the Z-ring scaffold to the cytoplasmic membrane by binding to FtsZ. While FtsZ is known to function as a dynamic, polymerized GTPase, the assembly state of its partner, FtsA, and the role of ATP are still unclear. We report that a substitution mutation in the FtsA ATP-binding site impairs ATP hydrolysis, phospholipid vesicle remodeling in vitro, and Z-ring assembly in vivo. We demonstrate by transmission electron microscopy and Förster Resonance Energy Transfer that a truncated FtsA variant, FtsA(ΔMTS) lacking a C-terminal membrane targeting sequence, self assembles into ATP-dependent filaments. These filaments coassemble with FtsZ polymers but are destabilized by unassembled FtsZ. These findings suggest a model wherein ATP binding drives FtsA polymerization and membrane remodeling at the lipid surface, and FtsA polymerization is coregulated with FtsZ polymerization. We conclude that the coordinated assembly of FtsZ and FtsA polymers may serve as a key checkpoint in division that triggers cell wall synthesis and division progression.

Synthesis and Characterization of Microwave-Assisted Copolymer Membranes of Poly(vinyl alcohol)-g-starch-methacrylate and Their Evaluation for Gas Transport Properties

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is an excellent membrane-forming polymer and can be modified with potato starch and methyl acrylate monomers to obtain copolymers with improved physical and chemical properties. The study presents the synthesis of poly(vinyl alcohol)-g-starch-poly(methyl acrylate) PVA-g-St-g-PMA copolymers using microwave irradiation technique and potassium persulfate initiator. Solution casting and solvent evaporation methods were adopted for the fabrication of polyvinyl alcohol-g-starch-acrylamide composite membranes. The synthesized graft copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermal analysis. The modified nanocomposite membranes were showed very promising results with the parameters permeability and selectivity. The nanocomposite membranes exhibited the advantages of easy handling and reuse.

Demonstration of Equivalence of Generic Glatiramer Acetate and Copaxone®

The objective of the current work was to demonstrate the equivalence of Mylan’s glatiramer acetate (GA) to that of the reference product Copaxone^® (COP) using the four criteria for active pharmaceutical ingredient sameness as established by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The reaction scheme used to produce Mylan’s glatiramer acetate (MGA) was compared with that of COP, determined from publicly available literature. Comparative analyses of MGA and COP were performed for physicochemical properties such as amino acid composition and molecular weight distributions. Spectroscopic fingerprints were obtained using circular dichroism spectroscopy. Structural signatures for polymerization and depolymerization including total diethylamine (DEA) content, relative proportions of DEA-adducted amino acids, and N-and C-terminal amino acid sequences were probed with an array of highly sensitive analytical methods. Biological activity of the products was assessed using validated murine Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models of multiple sclerosis. MGA is produced using the same fundamental reaction scheme as COP and was shown to have equivalent physicochemical properties and composition. Analyses of multiple structural signatures demonstrated equivalence of MGA and COP with regard to polymerization, depolymerization, and propagational shift. Examination of the impact on prevention and treatment of EAE demonstrated equivalence of MGA and COP with respect to both activity and toxicity, and thereby provided confirmatory evidence of sameness. A rigorous, multi-pronged comparison of MGA and COP produced using an equivalent fundamental reaction scheme demonstrated equivalent physicochemical properties, structural signatures for polymerization and depolymerization, and biological activity as evidenced by comparable effects in EAE. These studies demonstrate the equivalence of MGA and COP, establishing active ingredient sameness by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) criteria for GA, and provide compelling evidence that the FDA-approved generic MGA can be substituted for COP for the treatment of patients with relapsing-remitting MS.

Aliphatic Anion Exchange Ionomers with Long Spacers and No Ether Links by Ziegler-Natta Polymerization: Properties and Alkaline Stability

In this work we report the synthesis of poly(vinylbenzylchloride-co-hexene) copolymer grafted with N,N-dimethylhexylammonium groups to study the effect of an aliphatic backbone without ether linkage on the ionomer properties. The copolymerization was achieved by the Ziegler-Natta method, employing the complex ZrCl4 (THF)2 as a catalyst. A certain degree of crosslinking with N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED) was introduced with the aim of avoiding excessive swelling in water. The resulting anion exchange polymers were characterized by 1H-NMR, FTIR, TGA, and ion exchange capacity (IEC) measurements. The ionomers showed good alkaline stability; after 72 h of treatment in 2 M KOH at 80 °C the remaining IEC of 76% confirms that ionomers without ether bonds are less sensitive to a SN2 attack and suggests the possibility of their use as a binder in a fuel cell electrode formulation. The ionomers were also blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and crosslinked with glutaraldehyde. The water uptake of the blend membranes was around 110% at 25 °C. The ionic conductivity at 25 °C in the OH- form was 29.5 mS/cm.

Novel β-cyclodextrin based copolymers: fabrication, characterization and in vitro release behavior

A novel cyclodextrin-contained copolymer poly(AAc-co-SA-AC-co-allyl-β-CD) was synthesized based on the method of redox radical polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) spectra were used to study the structure of the obtained copolymer. The molecular weight of the copolymer was studied by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by a solvent evaporation method. The morphology and particle size distribution of the cargo-free NPs were investigated with transmission electron microscope (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and laser particle analyzer, respectively. Curcumin (Cur) was selected as a model drug and encapsulated into the above NPs. The distribution of Cur in the drug-loaded NPs was analyzed by the method of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Moreover, the release profiles of Cur from Cur-loaded NPs were studied in pH 6.8 and 7.4 buffers. The results of FTIR and ¹H NMR spectra confirmed the successful synthesis of poly(AAc-co-SA-AC-co-allyl-β-CD). GPC curve proved that the molecular weight of the copolymer was more than 60 kDa. TEM and AFM images illustrated that the cargo-free NPs were in spherical shape with a diameter about 40 nm. XRD patterns and DSC curves indicated that most of Cur distributed in the Cur-loaded NPs with amorphous state. Importantly, the medicated NPs showed sustained release characteristics toward Cur.

Membrane Separation of Gaseous Hydrocarbons by Semicrystalline Multiblock Copolymers: Role of Cohesive Energy Density and Crystallites of the Polyether Block

The energy-efficient separation of hydrocarbons is critically important for petrochemical industries. As polymeric membranes are ideal candidates for such separation, it is essential to explore the fundamental relationships between the hydrocarbon permeation mechanism and the physical properties of the polymers. In this study, the permeation mechanisms of methane, ethane, ethene, propane, propene and n-butane through three commercial multiblock copolymers PEBAX 2533, PolyActive1500PEGT77PBT23 and PolyActive4000PEGT77PBT23 are thoroughly investigated at 33 °C. This study aims to investigate the influence of cohesive energy density and crystallites of the polyether block of multiblock copolymers on hydrocarbon separation. The hydrocarbon separation behavior of the polymers is explained based on the solution–diffusion model, which is commonly accepted for gas permeation through nonporous polymeric membrane materials.

The Synthesis of Associative Copolymers with Both Amphoteric and Hydrophobic Groups and the Effect of the Degree of Association on the Instability of Emulsions

The acrylamide (AM)/methacryloyl ethyl sulfobetaine (SPE)/behenyl polyoxyethylene ether methacrylate (BEM) terpolymer (PASB) was synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization. Four types of PASBs were synthesized by adjusting the moles of AM and BEM with constant total moles of monomers. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, molecular weight, and viscosity. By measuring the microscopic morphology and backscattered light intensity of the emulsions, the instability process of the emulsions prepared by PASBs was investigated in detail. The main instability processes of the emulsions prepared from PASBs within 45 min were flocculation and coalescence. The intermolecular association of copolymer PASBs was dominated by the behenyl functional groups on the molecular chains. The stability of the emulsions, which were prepared from isoviscosity aqueous solutions controlled by the concentration of the associative copolymers, was increased with the degree of association of copolymers. The hydrophobic association between the copolymer molecules can further slow down the flocculation and coalescence of the emulsion droplets on the basis of the same aqueous solution viscosity, which is one of the reasons for improving the stability of the emulsion.

Rearranged Copolyurea Networks for Selective Carbon Dioxide Adsorption at Room Temperature

Copolyurea networks (co-UNs) were synthesized via crosslinking polymerization of a mixture of tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane (TAPM) and melamine with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) using the organic sol-gel polymerization method. The subsequent thermal treatment of between 200 and 400 °C induced the sintering of the powdery polyurea networks to form porous frameworks via urea bond rearrangement and the removal of volatile hexamethylene moieties. Incorporating melamine into the networks resulted in a higher nitrogen content and micropore ratio, whereas the overall porosity decreased with the melamine composition. The rearranged network composed of the tetraamine/melamine units in an 80:20 ratio showed the highest carbon dioxide adsorption quantity at room temperature. The results show that optimizing the chemical structure and porosity of polyurea-based networks can lead to carbon dioxide adsorbents working at elevated temperatures.

Tumor Microenvironment-Responsive Polypeptide Nanogels for Controlled Antitumor Drug Delivery

Tumor microenvironment-responsive polypeptide nanogels belong to a biomaterial with excellent biocompatibility, easily adjustable performance, biodegradability, and non-toxic properties. They are developed for selective delivery of antitumor drugs into target organs to promote tumor cell uptake, which has become an effective measure of tumor treatment. Endogenous (such as reduction, reactive oxygen species, pH, and enzyme) and exogenous (such as light and temperature) responsive nanogels can release drugs in response to tumor tissues or cells to improve drug distribution and reduce drug side effects. This article systematically introduces the research progress in tumor microenvironment-responsive polypeptide nanogels to deliver antitumor drugs and provides a reference for the development of antitumor nanoformulations.

Where Biology and Traditional Polymers Meet: The Potential of Associating Sequence-Defined Polymers for Materials Science

Polymers with precisely defined monomeric sequences present an exquisite tool for controlling material properties by harnessing both the robustness of synthetic polymers and the ability to tailor the inter- and intramolecular interactions so crucial to many biological materials. While polymer scientists traditionally synthesized and studied the physics of long molecules best described by their statistical nature, many biological polymers derive their highly tailored functions from precisely controlled sequences. Therefore, significant effort has been applied toward developing new methods of synthesizing, characterizing, and understanding the physics of non-natural sequence-defined polymers. This perspective considers the synergistic advantages that can be achieved via tailoring both precise sequence control and attributes of traditional polymers in a single system. Here, we focus on the potential of sequence-defined polymers in highly associating systems, with a focus on the unique properties, such as enhanced proton conductivity, that can be attained by incorporating sequence. In particular, we examine these materials as key model systems for studying previously unresolvable questions in polymer physics including the role of chain shape near interfaces and how to tailor compatibilization between dissimilar polymer blocks. Finally, we discuss the critical challenges-in particular, truly scalable synthetic approaches, characterization and modeling tools, and robust control and understanding of assembly pathways-that must be overcome for sequence-defined polymers to attain their potential and achieve ubiquity.

Photo-cross-linked Gelatin Glycidyl Methacrylate/N-Vinylpyrrolidone Copolymeric Hydrogel with Tunable Mechanical Properties for Ocular Tissue Engineering Applications

Corneal transplantation is currently the primary treatment for corneal blindness. However, severe global scarcity of donor corneas is driving the scientific community to find novel solutions. One potential solution is to replace the damaged tissue with a biocompatible artificial cornea. Here, gelatin glycidyl methacrylate (GM) and N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) were cocrosslinked to afford a hybrid bicomponent copolymeric hydrogel with excellent mechanical, structural, and biological properties. Our studies showed that the GM/VP ratio can be adjusted to generate a construct with high tensile modulus and strength of 1.6 and 1.0 MPa, respectively, compared to 14 and 7.5 MPa for human cornea. The construct can tolerate up to 22.4 kPa pressure before retention sutures can tear through it. Due to the presence of a synthetic component, it has a significantly higher stability against collagenase induced degradation, yet it is biocompatible and promotes cellular adhesion, proliferation, and migration under in vitro settings.

Photophysical and Electro-Optical Properties of Copolymers Bearing Blue and Red Chromophores for Single-Layer White OLEDs

In this study, novel copolymers consisting of blue and red chromophores are presented to induce emission tuning, enabling the definition of white light emission in a single polymeric layer. These aromatic polyether sulfones exhibit high molecular weights, excellent solubility and processability via solution deposition techniques. In addition, by carefully controlling the molar ratios of chromophores composition, the energy transfer mechanism, from blue to red chromophores, takes place enabling us to define properly the emission covering the entire range of the visible spectrum. The optical and photophysical properties of the monomers and copolymers were thoroughly investigated via NIR-Vis-far UV Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE), Absorbance and Photoluminescence (PL). These copolymers are used as an emissive layer and applied in solution-processed WOLED devices. The fabricated WOLED devices have been subsequently studied and characterized in terms of their electroluminescence properties. Finally, the WOLED devices possess high color stability and demonstrate CIE Coordinates (0.33, 0.38), which approach closely the pure white light CIE coordinates.

Fouling Release Coatings Based on Acrylate-MQ Silicone Copolymers Incorporated with Non-Reactive Phenylmethylsilicone Oil

Copolymers containing MQ silicone and acrylate were synthesized by controlling the additive amount of compositions. Subsequently, fouling release coatings based on the copolymer with the incorporation of non-reactive phenylmethylsilicone oil were prepared. The surface properties of the coating (CAMQ₄₀) were consistent with that of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer, which ensured good hydrophobicity. Moreover, the seawater volume swelling rate of all prepared coatings was less than 5%, especially for CAMQ₄₀ with only 1.37%. Copolymers enhanced the mechanical properties of the coatings, while the enhancement was proportional to the molar content of structural units from acrylate in the copolymer. More importantly, the adhesion performance between the prepared coatings and substrates indicated that pull-off strength values were more than 1.6 MPa, meaning a high adhesion strength. The phenylmethylsilicone oil leaching observation determined that the oil leaching efficiency increased with the increase in the structural unit’s molar content from MQ silicone in the copolymer, which was mainly owing to the decrease in compatibility between oil and the cured coating, as well as the decrease in mechanical properties. High oil leaching efficiency could make up for the decrease in the biofouling removal rate due to the enhancement of the elastic modulus. For CAMQ₄₀, it had an excellent antifouling performance at 30 days of exposure time with more than 92% of biofouling removal rate, which was confirmed by biofilm adhesion assay.

Colorless to Multicolored, Fast Switching, and Highly Stable Electrochromic Devices Based on Thermally Cross-Linking Copolymer

Transparent-to-colored electrochromic devices exhibit promising application prospects and have gained popularity. Herein, two triphenylamine derivatives TPA-OCH₃ and TPA-CN with styryl moieties and different donor or acceptor units were designed and synthesized to further prepare solvent-resistant thermally cross-linking polymer P(TPA-OCH₃) and P(TPA-CN) without any additional initiator. P(TPA-OCH₃) and P(TPA-CN) possess two pairs of redox peaks, and P(TPA-OCH₃) shows a lower onset oxidation potential compared to P(TPA-CN) because of the pendent donor unit. Correspondingly, both polymers exhibit multicolored changes from the neutral colorless state to noticeable oxidized colors under different potentials. Furthermore, the thermally cross-linking copolymer P(TPA-OCH₃-co-TPA-CN) was obtained by TPA-OCH₃ and TPA-CN (the molar ratio is 2:1) and presents outstanding electrochromism with four color changes (colorless-orange-blue-purple) due to the multistep redox process of TPA-OCH₃ and TPA-CN units. It is more intriguing that the electrochromic device based on the copolymer films possesses a high optical contrast of 57.8% at 680 nm, fast switching time (0.52 and 0.66 s), and robust cyclic stability over 30 000 cycles with very little decay. Therefore, the thermally cross-linking copolymer is a promising candidate material for high-performance transmittive electrochromic devices, such as smart windows, sunglasses, and E-papers.
