N-Heterocyclic Carbene Adducts of Main Group Elements and Their Use as Ligands in Transition Metal Chemistry

Charge-Transfer Adducts of Chalcogenourea Derivatives of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes with Iodine Monochloride

In this communication, we investigate the reaction between seleno- and thiourea, derived from N-heterocyclic carbenes, with the interhalogen iodine monochloride. The formation of all three products was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, while single-crystal X-ray analyses were able to establish a charge-transfer coordination type, which showed a linear Se/S-I-Cl arrangement, for all adducts formed. Based on a detailed crystallographic analysis, we can deduce the zwitterionic character of these compounds.

Reaction of a bis(pentafulvene)titanium complex with an N-heterocyclic olefin: C-H-activation leads to resonance between a titanium vinyl and titanium alkylidene complex

The N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO) ImMe₄CH₂ (2) (ImMe₄CH₂ = (MeCNMe)₂CCH₂) was employed for the synthesis of the titanium complex 3 derived from an NHO ligand precursor. By reacting 2 with the bis(π-η⁵:σ-η¹-pentafulvene)titanium complex 1a, the terminal ylidic methylene unit of 2 is deprotonated by the quaternary exocyclic carbon atom of one pentafulvene ligand of 1a yielding the titanium complex 3 which bears an anionic NHO ligand (ImMe₄CH^-). 3 was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction and quantum chemical calculations. The latter highlight that 3 is best described as a titanium vinyl complex with significant contribution of the titanium alkylidene resonance structure.

Chemistry of Compounds Based on 1,2,3-Triazolylidene-Type Mesoionic Carbenes

Mesoionic carbenes (MICs) of the 1,2,3-triazolylidene type have established themselves as a popular class of compounds over the past decade. Primary reasons for this popularity are their modular synthesis and their strong donor properties. While such MICs have mostly been used in combination with transition metals, the past few years have also seen their utility together with main group elements. In this paper, we present an overview of the recent developments on this class of compounds that include, among others, (i) cationic and anionic MIC ligands, (ii) the donor/acceptor properties of these ligands with a focus on the several methods that are known for estimating such donor/acceptor properties, (iii) a detailed overview of 3d metal complexes and main group compounds with these MIC ligands, (iv) results on the redox and photophysical properties of compounds based on MIC ligands, and (v) an overview on electrocatalysis, redox-switchable catalysis, and small-molecule activation to highlight the applications of compounds based on MIC ligands in contemporary chemistry. By discussing several aspects from the synthetic, spectroscopic, and application point of view of these classes of compounds, we highlight the state of the art of compounds containing MICs and present a perspective for future research in this field.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Phosphinidenide Complexes as Hydroboration Catalysts

The reactions of the N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphinidene adducts (NHC)PSiMe₃ and (NHC)PH with the dinuclear ruthenium and osmium complexes [(η⁶-p-cymene)MCl₂]₂ (M = Ru, Os) afforded the half-sandwich complexes [(η⁶-p-cymene){(NHC)P}MCl] and [(η⁶-p-cymene){(NHC)PH}MCl₂] with two- and three-legged piano-stool geometries, respectively (NHC = IDipp, IMes; IDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene; IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene). The complexes were initially tested as precatalysts for the hydroboration of benzonitrile, and the most active species, the ruthenium complex [(η⁶-p-cymene){(IMes)P}RuCl], was further used for the efficient hydroboration of a wide range (ca. 50 substrates) of nitriles, carboxylic esters, and carboxamides in neat pinacolborane (HBpin) under comparatively mild reaction conditions (60-80 °C, 3-5 mol % catalyst loading). Preliminary mechanistic and kinetic studies are reported, and stoichiometric reactions with HBpin indicate the initial formation of the monohydride complex [(η⁶-p-cymene){(IMes)P}RuH] as the putative catalytically active species.

An NHC-Stabilized H2 GeBH2 Precursor for the Preparation of Cationic Group 13/14/15 Hydride Chains

The synthesis, characterization and reactivity studies of the NHC-stabilized complex IDipp ⋅ GeH2 BH2 OTf (1) (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) are reported. Nucleophilic substitution of the triflate (OTf) group in 1 by phosphine or arsine donors provides access to the cationic group 13/14/15 chains [IDipp ⋅ GeH2 BH2 ERR1 R2 ]+ (2 E=P; R, R1 =H; R2 =t Bu; 3 E=P; R=H; R1 , R2 =Ph; 4 a E=P; R, R1 , R2 =Ph; 4 b E=As; R, R1 , R2 =Ph). These novel cationic chains were characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Moreover, the formation of the parent complexes [IDipp ⋅ GeH2 BH2 PH3 ][OTf] (5) and [IDipp ⋅ GeH3 ][OTf] (6) were achieved by reaction of 1 with PH3 . Accompanying DFT computations give insight into the stability of the formed chains with respect to their decomposition.

Thiazetidin-2-ylidenes as four membered N-heterocyclic carbenes: theoretical studies and the generation of complexes with N+ center

Thiazetidin-2-ylidenes have been designed as four membered N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) using quantum chemical studies. These species are smaller analogs of thiazol-2-ylidenes, possess high singlet stability (57 kcal mol^-1) and large nucleophilicity (3.4 eV). The possible existence of these carbenes has been established by synthesizing and crystalizing compounds with NHC→N⁺←(thiazetidin-2-ylidene) coordination bonds.

Metal Complexes as DNA Synthesis and/or Repair Inhibitors: Anticancer and Antimicrobial Agents

Medicinal inorganic chemistry involving the utilization of metal-based compounds as therapeutics has become a field showing distinct promise. DNA and RNA are ideal drug targets for therapeutic intervention in the case of various diseases, such as cancer and microbial infection. Metals play a vital role in medicine, with at least 10 metals known to be essential for human life and a further 46 nonessential metals having been involved in drug therapies and diagnosis. These metal-based complexes interact with DNA in various ways, and are often delivered as prodrugs which undergo activation in vivo. Metal complexes cause DNA crosslinking, leading to the inhibition of DNA synthesis and repair. In this review, the various interactions of metal complexes with DNA nucleic acids, as well as the underlying mechanism of action, were highlighted. Furthermore, we also discussed various tools used to investigate the interaction between metal complexes and the DNA. The tools included in vitro techniques such as spectroscopy and electrophoresis, and in silico studies such as protein docking and density-functional theory that are highlighted for preclinical development.

A PH-functionalized dicationic bis(imidazolio)diphosphine

Reaction of the iodide salt of a secondary imidazolio-iodophosphine [(L)PHI]I (L⁺ = 1,3-diarylimidazolium-yl) with an imidazolio-phosphide (L)PH in the presence of GaI₃ afforded the isolable salt of a dicationic, bis(imidazolio)-substituted dihydro-diphosphine [(L)₂P₂H₂][GaI₄]₂. Non-preparative formation of the cationic diphosphines was also observed upon spontaneous "dehalo-coupling" of [(L)PHI]⁺, or in reactions of [(L)PHI]I and (L)PH in the absence of GaI₃. Further reaction of [(L)₂P₂H₂]²⁺ with (L)PH produced an iodide salt of a known (bis)imidazolio-diphosphide monocation [(L)₂P₂H]⁺. The identity of cationic diphosphines and diphosphides was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. NMR spectroscopy revealed that dications [(L)₂P₂H₂]²⁺ exist as a mixture of meso- and rac-diastereomers in solution. Computational studies confirmed the stereochemical assignment of the isomers observed, and gave insight into the bonding situation of the diphosphine dications.

Fluoride-Mediated Nucleophilic Aromatic Amination of Chloro-1H-1,2,3-triazolium Salts

We report a fluoride-mediated nucleophilic aromatic amination of chloro-1H-1,2,3-triazolium salts with aliphatic amines. The reaction proceeded under mild reaction conditions to provide amino-1,2,3-triazolium salts with various functional groups, which can be utilized for further transformations. Moreover, it was found that an amino-1,2,3-triazolium salt was transformed via deprotonation into the N-heterocyclic imine (NHI), which exhibited the excellent catalytic activity for the cyanosilylation of acetophenone with trimethylsilyl cyanide.

Rhodium and Iridium Complexes of Anionic Thione and Selone Ligands Derived from Anionic N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The lithium salts of anionic N‐heterocyclic thiones and selones [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}Li(toluene)] (1: E=S; 2: E=Se; WCA=B(C₆F₅)₃, IDipp=1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene), which contain a weakly coordinating anionic (WCA) borate moiety in the imidazole backbone were reacted with Me₃SiCl, to furnish the silylated adducts (WCA‐IDipp)ESiMe₃ (3: E=S; 4: E=Se). The reaction of the latter with [(η⁵‐C₅Me₅)MCl₂]₂ (M=Rh, Ir) afforded the rhodium(III) and iridium(III) half‐sandwich complexes [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}MCl(η⁵‐C₅Me₅)] (5–8). The direct reaction of the lithium salts 1 and 2 with a half or a full equivalent of [M(COD)Cl]₂ (M=Rh, Ir) afforded the monometallic complexes [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}M(COD)] (9–12) or the bimetallic complexes [μ₂‐{(WCA‐IDipp)E}M₂(COD)₂(μ₂‐Cl)] (13–16), respectively. The bonding situation in these complexes has been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing thiolate or selenolate ligand character with negligible metal‐chalcogen π‐interaction.

Dative behavior of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) with selenium in Se-NHC compounds

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are an eminent class of carbenes having a heterocyclic ring in which a divalent carbon atom is attached directly to a nitrogen atom. In the NHCs, the donation of lone pair is another important research in the dative bonding and not only in NHCs the dative bond plays a functionalized role in the other classes of complex formation like ylidones L → E ← L and carbones L → C ← L. M–NHC bond is L-M sigma-dative bond and NHCs are considered as strong sigma-donor ligands. The clear picture of the M–NHC bond can be better understood by M–NHC pi-interaction. M-L pi interaction is comprised of two steps. One is L → M sigma-donation and M → L π* back bonding. This dative donor nature of NHC and also its behavior in organoselenium is studied through DFT in which it’s optimized structure, bond lengths, molecular vibrations are calculated.

Experimental and Computational Study on Photophysical Properties of Mesoionic Chalcogenones

N-Heterocyclic carbene adducts with main group elements (NHC=E) have aroused great interest and have been widely investigated in coordination chemistry. Among them, N-heterocyclic carbene adducts with chalcogens (NHC=Ch) have been known for a long time. Their investigations mostly focused on synthesis, coordination chemistry and electrochemistry. Their photophysical properties still remain unexplored. In this work, the photophysical properties of mesoionic carbene adducts with sulfur and selenium have been investigated both in solution and solid state. These compounds showed blue fluorescence in dichloromethane. While in solid state, orange to red room-temperature phosphorescence can be observed, and dual emission was found in mesoionic thiones. Furthermore, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were used to obtain insights into the luminescent mechanism.

Metathesis of P=C Bonds Catalyzed by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The catalytic metathesis of C=C bonds is a textbook reaction that has no parallel in the widely studied area of multiple bonds involving heavier p-block elements. A high-yielding P=C bond metathesis of phosphaalkenes (ArP=CPh₂ , Ar=Mes, o-Tol, Ph) has been discovered that is catalyzed by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC=Me₂ IMe, Me₂ Iⁱ Pr). The products are cyclic oligomers formally derived from ArP=PAr [i. e. cyclo-(ArP)_n ; n=3, 4, 5, 6] and Ph₂ C=CPh₂ . Preliminary mechanistic studies of this remarkable transformation have established NHC=PAr (Ar=Mes, o-Tol, Ph) as key phosphinidene transfer agents. In addition, novel cyclic intermediates, such as, cyclo-(ArP)₂ CPh₂ and cyclo-(ArP)₄ CPh₂ have also been observed. This work represents a rare application of non-metal-based catalysts for transformations involving main-group elements.

Phosphine-Stabilized Pnictinidenes

The reaction of the intramolecular germylene‐phosphine Lewis pair (o‐PPh₂)C₆H₄GeAr* (1) with Group 15 element trichlorides ECl₃ (E=P, As, Sb) was investigated. After oxidative addition, the resulting compounds (o‐PPh₂)C₆H₄(Ar*)Ge(Cl)ECl₂ (2: E=P, 3: E=As, 4: E=Sb) were reduced by using sodium metal or LiHBEt₃. The molecular structures of the phosphine‐stabilized phosphinidene (o‐PPh₂)C₆H₄(Ar*)Ge(Cl)P (5), arsinidene (o‐PPh₂)C₆H₄(Ar*)Ge(Cl)As (6) and stibinidene (o‐PPh₂)C₆H₄(Ar*)Ge(Cl)Sb (7) are presented; they feature a two‐coordinate low‐valent Group 15 element. After chloride abstraction, a cyclic germaphosphene [(o‐PPh₂)C₆H₄(Ar*)GeP] [B(C₆H₃(CF₃)₂)₄] (8) was isolated. The ³¹P NMR data of the germaphosphene were compared with literature examples and analyzed by quantum chemical calculations. The phosphinidene was treated with [iBu₂AlH]₂, and the product of an Al−H addition to the low‐valent phosphorus atom (o‐PPh₂)C₆H₄(Ar*)Ge(H)P(H)Al(C₄H₉)₂ (9) was characterized.

NMR Crystallography Enhanced by Quantum Chemical Calculations and Liquid State NMR Spectroscopy for the Investigation of Se-NHC Adducts*

N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHC) are widely utilized in catalysis and material science. They are characterized by their steric and electronic properties. Steric properties are usually quantified on the basis of their static structure, which can be determined by X-ray diffraction. The electronic properties are estimated in the liquid state; for example, via the ⁷⁷ Se liquid state NMR of Se-NHC adducts. We demonstrate that ⁷⁷ Se NMR crystallography can contribute to the characterization of the structural and electronic properties of NHC in solid and liquid states. Selected Se-NHC adducts are investigated via ⁷⁷ Se solid state NMR and X-ray crystallography, supported by quantum chemical calculations. This investigation reveals a correlation between the molecular structure of adducts and NMR parameters, including not only isotropic chemical shifts but also the other chemical shift tensor components. Afterwards, the liquid state ⁷⁷ Se NMR data is presented and interpreted in terms of the quantum chemistry modelling. The discrepancy between the structural and electronic properties, and in particular the π-accepting abilities of adducts in the solid and liquid states is discussed. Finally, the ¹³ C isotropic chemical shift from the liquid state NMR and the ¹³ C tensor components are also discussed, and compared with their ⁷⁷ Se counterparts. ⁷⁷ Se NMR crystallography can deliver valuable information about NHC ligands, and together with liquid state ⁷⁷ Se NMR can provide an in-depth outlook on the properties of NHC ligands.

Non-conventional Behavior of a 2,1-Benzazaphosphole: Heterodiene or Hidden Phosphinidene?

The titled 2,1-benzazaphosphole (1) (i. e. ArP, where Ar=2-(DippN=CH)C6 H4 , Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) showed a spectacular reactivity behaving both as a reactive heterodiene in hetero-Diels-Alder (DA) reactions or as a hidden phosphinidene in the coordination toward selected transition metals (TMs). Thus, 1 reacts with electron-deficient alkynes RC≡CR (R=CO2 Me, C5 F4 N) giving 1-phospha-1,4-dihydro-iminonaphthalenes 2 and 3, that undergo hydrogen migration producing 1-phosphanaphthalenes 4 and 5. Compound 1 is also able to activate the C=C double bond in selected N-alkyl/aryl-maleimides RN(C(O)CH)2 (R=Me, tBu, Ph) resulting in the addition products 7-9 with bridged bicyclic [2.2.1] structures. The binding of the maleimides to 1 is semi-reversible upon heating. By contrast, when 1 was treated with selected TM complexes, it serves as a 4e donor bridging two TMs thus producing complexes [μ-ArP(AuCl)2 ] (10), [(μ-ArP)4 Ag4 ][X]4 (X=BF4 (11), OTf (12)) and [μ-ArP(Co2 (CO)6 )] (13). The structure and electron distribution of the starting material 1 as well as of other compounds were also studied from the theoretical point of view.

Recent advances in the synthesis and derivatization of N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metal complexes have gained an incredible amount of attention in the course of the last two decades and have become indispensable as an intricate part of a plethora of applications. The areas of their synthesis and derivatization are constantly evolving and bring new, more sustainable, cost-effective and simpler approaches to the design of existing and next generation catalysts and materials. This article provides an overview of the latest developments, focusing on those which have appeared during the last two years.

Application of the Redox-Transmetalation Procedure to Access Divalent Lanthanide and Alkaline-Earth NHC Complexes*

Divalent lanthanide and alkaline-earth complexes supported by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been accessed by redox-transmetalation between air-stable NHC-AgI complexes and the corresponding metals. By using the small ligand 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMe), two series of isostructural complexes were obtained: the tetra-NHC complexes [LnI2 (IMe)4 ] (Ln=Eu and Sm) and the bis-NHC complexes [MI2 (IMe)2 (THF)2 ] (M=Yb, Ca and Sr). In the former, distortions in the NHC coordination were found to originate from intermolecular repulsions in the solid state. Application of the redox-transmetalation strategy with the bulkier 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) ligand yielded [SrI2 (IMes)(THF)3 ], while using a similar procedure with Ca metal led to [CaI2 (THF)4 ] and uncoordinated IMes. DFT calculations were performed to rationalise the selective formation of the bis-NHC adduct in [SrI2 (IMe)2 (THF)2 ] and the tetra-NHC adduct in [SmI2 (IMe)4 ]. Since the results in the gas phase point towards preferential formation of the tetra-NHC complexes for both metal centres, the differences between both arrangements are a result of solid-state effects such as slightly different packing forces.

Recent advances in the chemistry and applications of N-heterocyclic carbenes

N-Heterocyclic carbenes, despite being isolated and characterized three decades ago, still capture scientists' interest as versatile, modular and strongly coordinating moieties. In the last decade, driven by the increasingly refined fundamental understanding of their behaviour, the emergence of new carbene frameworks and cogent sustainability issues, N-heterocyclic carbenes have experienced a tremendous increase in utilization across several disparate fields. In this Review, a concise overview of N-heterocyclic carbenes encompassing their history, properties and applications in transition metal catalysis, on-surface chemistry, main group chemistry and organocatalysis is provided. Emphasis is placed on developments emerging in the last seven years and on envisaging future directions.

Insights into the Factors Controlling the Origin of Activation Barriers in Group 13 Analogues of the Four-Membered N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The mechanisms of C-H bond insertion and alkene cycloaddition were investigated theoretically using five model systems: group 13 analogues of the four-membered nucleophilic N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) (1E; E = group 13 element). The theoretical findings indicate that, except for 1B with H2C=CH2, these four-membered NHCs undergo insertion and [1 + 2] cycloaddition reactions with difficulty because their activation barriers are quite high (31 kcal/mol). The theoretically confirmed chemical inertness of the four-membered NHCs 1Ga and 1In might explain why they have been experimentally detected at room temperature. Additionally, our theoretical observations indicate that the reactivity of these four-membered NHCs featuring a central group 13 element follows the order 1B ≫ 1Al > 1Ga > 1In > 1Tl. The theoretical examination suggests that the smaller the atomic radius of the central group 13 element in the four-membered NHC analogue is, the larger the aromaticity of this carbenic molecule is, the higher the basicity of this carbenic molecule in nature is, the larger its nucleophilic attack on other oncoming molecules is, the smaller the barrier heights of its C-H bond insertion and [1 + 2] cycloaddition reactions will be, the higher its exothermicities for these products will be, and thus, the greater its reactivity will be. Moreover, the present theoretical findings reveal that the reactivity of 1B is governed by its highest occupied molecular orbital, a nonbonding sp2 lone pair orbital. In contrast, the reactivity of the four heavier 1E' (E' = Al, Ga, In, and Tl) molecules is mainly determined by their lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, a vacant p-π orbital. The conclusions gained from this study allow many predictions to be made.

A new nanomagnetic Pd-Co bimetallic alloy as catalyst in the Mizoroki-Heck and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions in aqueous media

A Pd-Co bimetallic alloy encapsulated in melamine-based dendrimer supported on magnetic nanoparticles denoted as γ-Fe2O3@MBD/Pd-Co was synthesized by a facile co-complexation-reduction method and characterized sufficiently. The catalytic evaluation of γ-Fe2O3@MBD/Pd-Co showed promising results in the Mizoroki-Heck and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions of various iodo-, bromo- and challenging chloroarenes in aqueous media. The synergetic cooperative effect of both Pd and Co and dispersion of the catalyst in water due to the encapsulation of γ-Fe2O3 by melamine-based dendrimer lead to high catalytic performance compared with the monometallic counterparts. The dispersion of the magnetic catalyst also facilitates the recovery and reuse of the catalyst by ten consecutive extraction and final magnetic isolation with no loss of catalytic activity, keeping its structure unaltered.

Advances in chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbene boryl radicals

Boron-centred radicals (boryl radicals) are potential and attractive species in main group chemistry and synthetic chemistry. Recently, the development of boron compounds ligated by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) has sparked off advavnces in boryl radical chemistry because NHCs can highly stabilise boryl radicals by electronic and steric factors. This review highlights recent synthesis and reactions of such NHC-boryl radicals. From the standpoint of main group chemistry, examples of isolation or detection of unique NHC-boryl radicals are presented. From the standpoint of synthetic chemistry, on the other hand, the development of reactions of user-friendly NHC-boryl radicals, which has contributed to radical chemistry, organoboron chemistry and polymer science, is comprehensively described.

A Thermally Stable Magnesium Phosphaethynolate Grignard Complex

The 2-phosphaethynolate (OCP) anion has found versatile applications across the periodic table but remains underexplored in group 2 chemistry due to challenges in isolating thermally stable complexes. By rationally modifying their coordination environments using 1,3-dialkyl-substituted N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), we have now isolated and characterized thermally stable, structurally diverse, and hydrocarbon soluble magnesium phosphaethynolate complexes (2, 4^Me, and 8-10), including the novel phosphaethynolate Grignard reagent (2^iPr). The methylmagnesium phosphaethynolate and magnesium diphosphaethynolate complexes readily activate dioxane with subsequent H-atom abstraction to form [(NHC)MgX(μ-OEt)]₂ [X = Me (3) or OCP (8 and 9)] complexes. Their reactivities increased with the Lewis acidity of the Mg²⁺ cation and may be attenuated by Lewis base saturation or a slight increase in carbene sterics. Solvent effects were also investigated and led to the surreptitious isolation of an ether-free sodium phosphaethynolate (NHC)₃Na(OCP) (6), which is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and can be independently prepared by the reaction of NHC and [Na(dioxane)₂][OCP] in toluene. Under forcing conditions (105 °C, 3 days), the magnesium diphosphaethynolate complex (NHC)₃Mg(OCP)₂ (10) decomposes to a mixture of organophosphorus complexes, among which a thermal decarbonylation product [(NHC)₂P^I][OCP] (11) was isolated.

Acenaphthene-Based N-Heterocyclic Carbene Metal Complexes: Synthesis and Application in Catalysis

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have become a privileged structural motif in modern homogenous and heterogeneous catalysis. The last two decades have brought a plethora of structurally and electronically diversified carbene ligands, enabling the development of cutting-edge transformations, especially in the area of carbon-carbon bond formation. Although most of these were accomplished with common imidazolylidene and imidazolinylidene ligands, the most challenging ones were only accessible with the acenaphthylene-derived N-heterocyclic carbene ligands bearing a π-extended system. Their superior σ-donor capabilities with simultaneous ease of modification of the rigid backbone enhance the catalytic activity and stability of their transition metal complexes, which makes BIAN-NHC (BIAN—bis(imino)acenaphthene) ligands an attractive tool for the development of challenging reactions. The present review summarizes synthetic efforts towards BIAN-NHC metal complexes bearing acenaphthylene subunits and their applications in modern catalysis, with special emphasis put on recently developed enantioselective processes.

An NHC-Stabilised Phosphinidene for Catalytic Formylation: A DFT-Guided Approach

In recent years, the applications of low-valent main group compounds have gained momentum in the field of catalysis. Owing to the accessibility of two lone pairs of electrons, NHC-stabilised phosphinidenes have been found to be excellent Lewis bases; however, they cannot yet be used as catalysts. Herein, an NHC-stabilised phosphinidene, 1,3-dimethyl-2-(phenylphosphanylidene)-2,3-dihydro-1H imidazole (1), for the activation of CO₂ is reported.A closer inspection of the CO₂ activation process by DFT calculations along with intrinsic bond orbital analysis shows that phosphinidene is associated with phenylsilane through a noncovalent π-π interaction between two phenyl rings which activates the Si-H bond facilitating hydride transfer to the CO₂ molecule. Detailed DFT studies along with spectroscopic experiments were combined to understand the mechanism of CO₂ activation and its catalytic reductive functionalisation leading to the formylation of a range of chemically inert primary amides under mild reaction conditions.
