Abstract
Developing of high effective and fast-rate adsorbent materials has been recently attracted intensive attentions all over the world due to organic dye polluted water treatment. However, few studies have been reported on the ultrahigh-capacity and fast-rate removal of Congo red. In this work, a new stable Cd-based coordination polymer exhibits excellent adsorption performance towards Congo Red. This ladder chain [Cd4(H2L)4(H2O)8(NDS)]n·3n(NDS) (I) (H2L = N1,N2-bis(pyridin-3-ylmethyl) ethane-1,2-diamine, 1,5-H2NDS = 1,5-naphthalene disulfonic acid) has been successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction. At room temperature, the experimental adsorption capacity of coordination polymer (I) towards Congo red can reach up to 16,880 mg g-1 in 20 min (pH = 2.0-3.2), and its higher capacity and faster rate are all better than those in reported inorganic and metal-organic frameworks absorbents. The adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic reaction, and fits well with the second-order kinetics, Langmuir and Scatchard isotherm adsorption models. The excellent adsorption performance of (I) towards Congo red is related to the strong electrostatic, various hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions under acidic conditions.

Abstract
A 2-D copper(ii)-based coordination polymer, [Cu(SCN)(hmp)]n CP (1), was crystallized via the slow evaporation method after the reaction of CuSO4·5H2O, 2-pyridinemethanol (hmpH), sodium thiocyanate and sodium hydroxide in water for functional applications. CP (1) was characterized via elemental analysis, FTIR, PXRD, magnetic, EPR, crystallographic and TGA studies. The crystal structure and EPR data confirmed a square pyramidal geometry around the Cu(ii) ions. The topological analysis revealed that CP 1 has a {6^3} point symbol with a [6.6.6] extended point symbol and 3-c net, uninodal net having hcb and Shubnikov hexagonal plane net/(6,3) type of uncommon topology. The magnetic studies suggested the strong antiferromagnetic nature of CP (1). The fluorescence sensing property of CP (1) was investigated with different nitro aromatic compounds and hazardous metal ions. CP (1) demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity towards nitrobenzene, even in the presence of other competitive nitro aromatics. In addition, CP (1) showed excellent selectivity and sensitivity toward Fe3+ over other metal ions. The possible detection mechanisms were proposed employing UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy and DFT calculations. CP (1) also showed excellent recyclability towards both analytes, and its initial intensity was almost regained after several washings. Moreover, CP (1) acted as an excellent adsorbent material for natural dyes with different charges and sizes, i.e., methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine-B. Furthermore, CP (1) was utilized repeatedly for the effective adsorption of MB from wastewater without significant loss in its adsorption capacity. Hence, the present CP (1) was designed to relate coordination chemistry with various functional applications of interest.

Abstract
In this study, our group grafted 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) onto the surface of hollow glass microspheres (HGM) and successfully prepared AMPS grafted floating adsorbent (AFA). The prepared AFA carries a large amount of negative charges, and the adsorptions of cationic dyes are achieved under the action of strong electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, due to the unique shell structure of AFA, it has a stable self-floating ability, which may change the traditional separation method to make the adsorbent easier to enrich and separate from water surface. Characterizations of AFA by scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectra, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffractometer shows the successful grafting of AMPS. Adsorption experiments confirmed that the adsorption capacities of AFA for methylene blue, malachite green, basic fuchsin and crystal violet under optimum conditions were 436.8 mg g-1, 637.6 mg g-1, 457.8 mg g-1, and 399.4 mg g-1, respectively. At the same time, AFA has excellent recyclability, and its adsorption capacity can be maintained after 6 cycles of reuse.

Abstract
In this study, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD), HPβCD-conjugated magnetic nanoparticles (HPMN) and HPβCD-conjugated magnetic nanoparticles with polyurethane networks (HPMNPU) were synthesized and used as adsorbents for the removal of crystal violet (CV) and methyl violet (MV) dyes from aqueous solutions. Magnetic nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results of characterization analyses indicated that HPβCD was successfully modified with magnetic nanoparticles and polyurethane networks. In this work, a novel definitive screening design (DSD) was initially used to investigate the adsorption and elimination of dye impurities. This method allows a drastic reduction in the number of experiments needed to investigate those systems characterized by a large number of variables. The effects of nine quantitative parameters were investigated: initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, contact time, temperature, pH, ionic strength, HMDI/HP ratio, MN/HP ratio, and stirrer speed. Analysis of a DSD model revealed that only four variables, namely, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial dye concentration and HMDI/HP ratio were statistically significant. Compared with HPMN, HPMNPU nanocomposites showed better adsorption performance for the removal of CV and MV from aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity values of HPMNPU were approximately 1269 mg g-1 and 1667 mg g-1 for CV and MV, respectively. This study showed that HPMNPU adsorbents exhibited high adsorption performance for the removal of CV and MV from water and could be promising adsorbent materials for the efficient removal of cationic dyes from wastewaters.

Abstract
Chitosan/cellulose acetate (CS/CA) used as a biopolymer systema, with the addition of TiO2 as photocatalyst (C-T/CA) were fabricated by alternating electrospinning/electrospraying technology. The uniform dispersion of TiO2 and its recovery after the removal of methyl orange (MO) was achieved by incorporating TiO2 in CS electrosprayed hemispheres. The effects of pH values, contact time, and the amount of TiO2 on adsorption and photocatalytic degradation for MO of the C-T/CA were investigated in detail. When TiO2 content was 3 wt %, the highest MO removal amount for fiber membranes (C-T-3/CA) reached 98% at pH value 4 and MO concentration of 40 mg/L. According to the data analysis, the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm model were well fitted to kinetic and equilibrium data of MO removal. Especially for C-T-3/CA, the fiber membrane exhibited multiple layers of adsorption. All these results indicated that adsorption caused by electrostatic interaction and photocatalytic degradation were involved in the MO removal process. This work provides a potential method for developing a novel photocatalyst with excellent catalytic activity, adsorbing capability and recycling use.

Abstract
Nano-sized palladium nanoparticles showed high catalytic activity with severe limitations in catalytic field due to the tendency to aggregate. A solid substrate with large specific surface area is an ideal carrier for palladium nanoparticles. In present work, polyethyleneimine/polycaprolactone/Pd nanoparticles (PEI/PCL@PdNPs) composite catalysts were successfully designed and prepared by electrospinning and reduction methods using PEI/PCL elexctrospun fiber as carrier. The added PEI component effectively regulated the microscopic morphology of the PEI/PCL fibers, following a large number of pit structures which increased the specific surface area of the electrospun fibers and provided active sites for loading of the palladium particles. The obtained PEI/PCL@PdNPs catalysts for reductions of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and 2-nitroaniline (2-NA) exhibited extremely efficient, stable, and reusable catalytic performance. It was worth mentioning that the reaction rate constant of catalytic reduction of 4-NP was as high as 0.16597 s−1. Therefore, we have developed a highly efficient catalyst with potential applications in the field of catalysis and water treatment.

Abstract
In this study, we fabricated a trifunctional polyurethane (PU)/graphene oxide (GO) electrospun membrane for adsorption of organic dyes such as methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RB). Moreover, the prepared membrane showed antifouling property and inhibition against bacteria. The GO modified PU nanofiber shows a maximum adsorption capacity of 109.88 mg/g and 77.15 mg/g towards MB and RB respectively. Theoretical studies confirmed that the dye adsorption is followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The superhydrophilic PU/10GO membrane exhibits high water flux of 17,706 lm-2hr-1. This membrane also exhibits good antifouling property for separating oil-in-water emulsions with 99.99% separation efficiency. The Mechanism of antifouling was investigated using Hermia model. The results showed that PU/GO membranes also have antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterias. Thus a superhydrophilic nanofibrous antifouling membrane that can reject both organic dye molecule and bacteria from contaminated water is developed using simple electrospinning technique.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are a family of biodegradable cyclic hydrocarbons composed of α-(1,4) linked glucopyranose subunits, the more common containing 6, 7 or 8 glucose units are named α, β and γ-cyclodextrins respectively. Since the discovery of CDs, they have attracted interest among scientists and the first studies were about the properties of the native compounds and in particular their use as catalysts of organic reactions. Characteristics features of different types of cyclodextrins stimulated investigation in different areas of research, due to its non-toxic and non-inmunogenic properties and also to the development of an improved industrial production. In this way, many materials with important properties have been developed. This mini-review will focus on chemical systems that use cyclodextrins, whatever linked covalently or mediated by the non covalent interactions, to build complex systems developed mainly during the last five years.

Abstract
The occurrence of cephalosporin antibiotics in water resources has caused increasing concerns about their potential effects on ecosystem and human health. However, reports on the efficient removal of these antibiotics are limited. In this work, a superior hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid based polymer (PS-[Hemim][Cl]) was prepared for highly efficient removal of ceftiofur sodium (CFS) antibiotic from aqueous solutions, and the effect of various factors on the adsorption was investigated. It was found that the PS-[Hemim][Cl] exhibited a super-high adsorption capacity of 1260.5 mg/g for CFS within 60 min and kept high removal efficiency in a wide range of antibiotic concentrations from 5 ppb level to 1000 mg/L. Even the concentration of common inorganic ions was 1000 times higher than that of CFS, the adsorption efficiency remained above 93%. At the same time, the PS-[Hemim][Cl] showed excellent adsorption performance for the antibiotics with similar structure to CFS. Compared with commercially available adsorbents, the adsorption capacity of PS-[Hemim][Cl] for CFS was 4-468 times higher under the same experimental conditions. The application of PS-[Hemim][Cl] to real wastewater containing different concentrations of CFS was investigated and promising results were reported. Additionally, preliminary mechanism studies suggested that electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bond and ion exchange synergistically contributed to the highly efficient adsorption of CFS.

Abstract
Chitosan/silica hybrid was used for zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles immobilization to form chitosan/silica/ZnO nanocomposite. This nanocomposite was utilized to eliminate methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The effect of ZnO immobilization on the adsorption properties of the nanocomposite was studied in details. The best interpretation for the equilibrium data was given by Langmuir isotherm, and the highest adsorption capacity of MB reached to 293.3 mg/g in slight basic medium. As an effective and low-cost adsorbent, chitosan/silica/ZnO nanocomposite is expected to have a promising future for adsorption of organic dyes from their aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Functional carbon materials have been fabricated through simple and effective catalytic carbonization with waste coffee grounds (CGs) as carbon precursor and FeCl3 as catalyst. The effect of FeCl3 loading and carbonization temperature on carbon yield was investigated. The morphology and structure of as-synthesized carbons was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen isothermal adsorption/desorption measurement, respectively. Furthermore, the carbon materials showed high efficiency for the removal of methylene blue (MB, 653.6 mg g-1), methyl orange (MO, 465.8 mg g-1) and rhodamine B (RB, 366.1 mg g-1). More importantly, the carbon was magnetic, so it can be easily separated by a magnet and reused multiple times. This work not only exploited a low-cost and large-scale preparation method to synthesize functional carbon materials from bioresources, but also provided an eco-friendly and effective adsorbent in water purification applications.

Abstract
Novel β-cyclodextrin modified fibers with highly insoluble infraction and temperature enhanced adsorption performance were fabricated via electrospinning technology and followed thermo-crosslinking. The fabricated fibers were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, TGA and SEM. In the fibers, β-CD was crosslinked with methacrylic acid (MAA) units to maintain morphologies of fibers and further be utilized for the adsorption of Crystal Violet through complex and electrostatic interaction. In particular, N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) units were introduced to create thermo-responsively hydrophobic internal cavity within the swelling fibers at high temperatures. Benefiting from that, the maximum adsorption amount could reach to 1253.78 mg g-1, enhanced by 20% than that at low temperatures. The adsorption data of the fibers fit well the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the fibers could maintain high regeneration efficiency even after four adsorption-desorption cycles. These results indicated the practical application values of the β-cyclodextrin modified fibers in the dye wastewater treatment field.

Abstract
The pollution of water resources has become a worldwide concern. The primary pollutants including insoluble oil, toxic dyes, and heavy metal ions. Herein, we report a polymer adsorbent, named SPCT, to remove the above three contaminants from water simultaneously. The preparation process of SPCT contains two steps. Firstly, a hydrogel composed of sulfonated phenolic resin (SMP) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was synthesized using glutaraldehyde (GA) as the crosslinking agent, and the product was named SPG. Then SPCT was prepared by the reaction between SPG and citric acid (CA) at 170 °C. SPCT exhibited an excellent performance for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution. For a solution with a pollutant concentration of 50 mg L−1, a removal efficiency of above 90% could be obtained with a SPCT dosage of 0.2 g L−1 for MB, or a SPCT dosage of 0.5 g L−1 for Cu(II), respectively. SPCT also presented an interesting wettability. In air, it was both superhydrophilic and superoleophilic, and it was superoleophobic underwater. Therefore, SPCT could successfully separate oil-in-water emulsion with high separation efficiency and resistance to oil fouling. Additionally, SPCT was easily regenerated by using dilute HCl solution as an eluent. The outstanding performance of SPCT and the efficient, cost-effective preparation process highlight its potential for practical applications.

Abstract
Considering the excellent thermo-mechanical properties, chemical stability and low cost of biodegradable aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters, they are an ideal matrix when functionalized for capturing pollutants in wastewater. In this work, biodegradable poly((butylene succinate-co-terephthalate)-co-serinol terephthalate) (PBSST) copolyesters with amino side group (-NH2) were first synthesized through copolymerization, followed by grafting carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CM-β-CD) into PBSST molecular chains via amidation reaction to prepare PBSST-g-β-CD. The corresponding nanofibrous membranes were then fabricated by electrospinning as adsorbents for efficiently removing cationic dye methyl blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption performance of the nanofibrous membranes was fitted well with pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 543.48 mg g-1 for MB along with a removal efficiency of 98% after five regeneration cycles, indicating the high adsorption capacity and good recyclability of nanofibrous membranes. The adsorbents possess features of high adsorption capacity, eco-friendliness and easy operation, and exhibit great potential for disposing of printing-dying wastewater.

Abstract
In this paper, environmentally friendly gelatin/β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) composite fiber adsorbents prepared by electrospinning were used for the removal of dyes from wastewater. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a universal materials tester were employed to characterize the internal structures, surface morphologies and mechanical strength of the composite fiber adsorbents. Additionally, the fiber was evaluated as an adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The effects of the raw material ratio, pH, temperature, concentration and adsorption time were studied. The results show that the gelatin/β-CD composite fiber adsorbents possess excellent mechanical strength and high adsorption efficiency for MB. The adsorption equilibrium and adsorption kinetics are well-described by the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity is 47.4 mg·g-1. Additionally, after nine successive desorption-adsorption cycles, the removal rate is still over 70%. Moreover, the gelatin/β-CD composite fiber adsorbents exhibit excellent adsorption capability for basic fuchsin, gentian violet, brilliant blue R and malachite green dyes. Therefore, owing to the characteristics of degradability, low cost and high-efficiency, the gelatin/β-CD composite fiber can be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of dyes from wastewater.

Abstract
Adsorption is recognized as one of the most promising technologies applied to remove heavy metals from contaminated water. However, the adsorption efficiency often decreases because of the aggregation and loss of adsorbents. Herein, a novel adsorbent was synthesized by intercalation ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) into layered double hydroxides (LDH) and subsequent encapsulated into PAN polymer matrix using electrospinning. The synthesized electrospun nanofiber membrane (MgAl-EDTA-LDH@PAN) was found to combine the advantages of LDH@PAN nanofiber membrane (high surface area, easy to separate, free from aggregation and loss) and EDTA (powerful chelating agent). The adsorption performance of the MgAl-EDTA-LDH@PAN was evaluated using Cu(II) as target metals by varying experimental conditions such as pH, contact time, initial adsorbent dosage, and temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity of MgAl-EDTA-LDH@PAN was 120.77mg/g with the initial Cu(II) concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 40mg/L. MgAl-EDTA-LDH@PAN was also used in real industrial contaminated water treatment, and the final effluent was approximate to class-I criteria of the National Wastewater Discharge Standard of China. (GB 8978-1996). In addition, Cu K-edge XAS and XPS analyses were applied for unraveling the adsorptive performance of MgAl-EDTA-LDH@PAN by revealing the molecular-level mechanism of Cu(II) uptake.

Abstract
A novel solid-phase microextraction fiber coated with a porous β-cyclodextrin polymer was developed. The porous β-cyclodextrin polymer cross-linked using tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, possessed well-distributed pores and the largest surface area among current β-cyclodextrin polymers. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the coating had a continuous wrinkled and folded structure, which guarantees a sufficient loading capacity for contaminants. The properties of the developed fiber were evaluated using headspace solid-phase microextraction of five contaminants as model analytes coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Owing to the advantages of a large surface area and three-dimensional cavities, the novel fiber exhibited excellent operational stability and extraction ability. After optimisation of the extraction conditions, including extraction temperature, extraction time, salt effect, and desorption time, validation of the method with water samples achieved good linearity over a wide range (0.01–120 μg L−1) and low detection limits (0.003–1.600 μg L−1). The single-fiber and fiber-to-fiber repeatabilities were 1.7–11.0% and 1.9–11.0%, respectively. The method was applied to the simultaneous analysis of five analytes with satisfactory recoveries (76.6–106.0% for pond water and 89.0–105.9% for rainwater). A novel solid-phase microextraction fiber coated with a porous β-cyclodextrin polymer was developed.![]()

Abstract
Tailoring the wetting properties of nanofibrous membranes and endowing them with expected wettability provides new ways in extending the application field of these materials. In this study, we first performed the in situ fabrication of poly(butylenes succinate-co-terephthalate) (PBST) composite nanofibrous membrane with cyclodextrin polymer (CDP) using a combination of electrospinning and heating processes. Then, the morphologies, crystallization and mechanical properties of the PBST composite membrane were investigated. It was found that the CDP was uniformly dispersed on the PBST nanofibers instead of merely covering the surface of the membrane. Moreover, the introduction of additives brought about a decreased crystallinity and tensile strength of the resultant membrane due to its restraining role in the crystallization of PBST. Furthermore, the wettability of the PBST composite membranes with various amounts of additives was explored and the evolution of water spread on top of the membranes was also recorded. The membrane became superhydrophilic from hydrophobic upon increasing the amount of additives and the water droplet could completely spread within 0.2 s, which was attributed to the enlarged roughness and increased contact area of CDP on the nanofibers. A comparison between the two fabrication methods used for PBST composite nanofibrous membranes is also presented and studies on the preparation and wetting properties may shed light on polymer composite membranes that exhibit potential application in more fields. We present a facile fabrication method for a PBST composite nanofibrous membrane with cyclodextrin polymer via electrospinning and heating processes. The membrane is superhydrophilic and water can completely spread on the surface within just 0.2 s.![]()

Abstract
Developing versatile materials for effective water purification is significant for environment and water source protection. Herein, a versatile bio-based material (CH-PAA-T) was reported by simple thermal cross-linking chitosan and polyacrylic acid which exhibits excellent performances for removing insoluble oil, soluble toxic dyes and heavy metal ions from water, simultaneously. The adsorption capacities are 990.1mgg-1 for methylene blue (MB) and 135.9mgg-1 for Cu2+, which are higher than most of present advanced absorbents. The adsorption towards organic dyes possesses high selectivity which makes CH-PAA-T be able to efficiently separate dye mixtures. The stable superoleophobicity under water endows CH-PAA-T good performance to separate toluene-in-water emulsion stabilized by Tween 80. Moreover, CH-PAA-T can be recycled for 10 times with negligible reduction of efficiency. Such versatile bio-based material is a potential candidate for water purification.
