Abstract
We report the synthesis of a mixed-valence ruthenium complex, bearing pyrene moieties on one side of the ligands as anchor groups. Composites consisting of mixed-valence ruthenium complexes and SWNTs were prepared by noncovalent π-π interactions between the SWNT surface and the pyrene anchors of the Ru complex. In these composites, the long axis of the Ru complexes was aligned in parallel to the principal direction of the SWNT. The optimized conformation of these complexes on the SWNT surface was calculated by molecular mechanics. The composites were examined by UV/Vis absorption and FT-IR spectroscopy, XPS, and SEM analysis. Furthermore, their electrochemical properties were evaluated. Cyclic voltammograms of the composites showed reversible oxidation waves at peak oxidation potentials (Epox ) = 0.86 and 1.08 V versus Fc(+) /Fc, which were assigned to the Ru(II) -Ru(II) /Ru(II) -Ru(III) and the Ru(II) -Ru(III) /Ru(III) -Ru(III) oxidation events of the dinuclear ruthenium complex, respectively. Based on these observations, we concluded that the electrochemical properties and mixed-valence state of the dinuclear ruthenium complexes were preserved upon attachment to the SWNT surface.

Abstract
A series of bis-tridentate cyclometalated osmium complexes with a redox-active triarylamine substituent have been prepared, where the amine substituent is separated from the osmium ion by a p-oligophenylene wire of various lengths. X-ray crystallographic data of complexes 3(PF6) and 4(PF6) with three or four repeating phenyl units between the osmium ion and the amine substituent are presented. These complexes show two consecutive anodic redox couples between +0.1 and +0.9 V vs Ag/AgCl, with the potential splitting in the range of 300-390 mV. A combined experimental and theoretical study suggests that, in the one-electron-oxidized state, the odd electron is delocalized for short congeners and localized on the osmium component for long congeners. The electronic coupling parameter (Vab) was estimated by the Marcus-Hush analysis. The distance dependence plot of ln(Vab) versus the osmium-amine geometrical distance (Rab) gives a negative linear relationship with a decay slope of -0.19 Å(-1), which is slightly steeper with respect to the previously reported ruthenium-amine series with the same molecular wire. DFT calculations with the long-range-corrected UCAM-B3LYP functional gave more reasonable results for the osmium complexes with respect to those with UB3LYP.

Abstract
In this study, we report intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties and charge distributions in a series of FcC derivatives (FcC = 4-ferrocenylcatecholate where Fc = ferrocene and C = catecholate). This series consists of a previously reported complex FcV (4-ferrocenylveratrole) and newly synthesized complexes FcA (4-ferrocenylcatechol bis(acetate) and Pt((t)Bu2bpy)(FcC) ((t)Bu2bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl). An electrochemical analysis of Pt((t)Bu2bpy)(FcC) using cyclic voltammetry revealed two well-defined, reversible waves which were assigned to the sequential oxidation of the Pt((t)Bu2bpy)(C) and Fc moieties. The potential splitting between the waves (524 mV) indicated that there was an electronic interaction between both moieties. ICT property and charge distribution of [Pt((t)Bu2bpy)(FcC)]˙(+) were rationalized by comparison with the [FcV]˙(+) and [FcA]˙(+) (4-ferrocenylcatechol bis(acetate)). DFT calculations and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy revealed that [Pt((t)Bu2bpy)(FcC)]˙(+), [FcV]˙(+), and [FcA]˙(+) were ferrocenium (Fc(+))-centered rather than semiquinone ligand-centered and that these complexes exhibited ICT transition bands from the catechol-derivatized framework to the Fc(+) moiety in the near infrared (NIR) region. Both the electronic coupling parameter (HAB) and delocalization parameter (α) increased in value as the electron-donating strength of the substituent groups in the catechol-derivatized framework increased (OCOCH3 ([FcA]˙(+)) < OCH3 ([FcV]˙(+)) < O(-) ([Pt((t)Bu2bpy)(FcC)]˙(+))). The electronic interactions between the organometallic center and the non-innocent framework were tuned by changing the substituents. The potential energy surfaces of the Fc(+) derivatives, obtained using two-state Marcus-Hush theory, can be modulated by changing the energy level of the molecular orbitals of the appended catechol-derivatized moieties.

Abstract
The studies of long-range electronic communication are hampered by solubility and potential-splitting issues. A “hybridized redox-asymmetry” method using a combination of organic and inorganic redox species is proposed and exemplified to overcome these two issues. Complexes 1(PF6)–6(PF6) (from short to long in length) with the organic redox-active amine and inorganic cyclometalated ruthenium termini bridged by the para-oligophenylene wire have been prepared. Complex 6 has the longest Ru-amine geometrical distance of 27.85 Å. Complexes 3(PF6) and 4(PF6) show lamellar crystal packing on the basis of a head-to-tail anti-parallelly aligned dimeric structure. Two redox waves are observed for all complexes in the potential region between +0.2 and +0.9 V vs Ag/AgCl. The electrochemical potential splitting is 410, 220, 143, 112, 107, and 105 mV for 1(PF6) through 6(PF6), respectively. Ruthenium (+2) to aminium (N•+) charge transfer transitions have been identified for the odd-electron compounds 12+–62+ by spectroelectrochemical measurements. The electronic communication between amine and ruthenium decreases exponentially with a decay slope of −0.137 Å−1. DFT calculations have been performed to complement these experimental results.

Abstract
We have previously investigated cis/trans isomerization processes in phenoxido-bridged mixed-valent Fe(II)Fe(III) complexes that contain either one aniline or one anilide ligand. In this work, we compare the properties of similar complexes bearing one terminal protic ligand, either aniline or 1H-benzimidazole. Whatever the ligand, (1)H NMR spectroscopy clearly evidences that the complexes are present in CH3CN as a mixture of cis- and trans-isomers in a close to 1:1 ratio. We show here that addition of NEt3 indeed allows the deprotonation of these ligands, the resulting complexes bearing either anilide or benzimidazolide that are coordinated to the ferric site. The latter are singular examples of a high-spin ferric ion coordinated to a benzimidazolide ligand. Whereas the trans-isomer of the anilide complex is the overwhelming species, benzimidazolide species are mixtures of cis- and trans-isomers in equal proportions. Moreover, cyclic voltammametry studies show that Fe(III)Fe(III) complexes with 1H-benzimidazole are more stable than their aniline counterparts, whereas the reverse is observed for the deprotonated species.

Abstract
The seminal discovery in 1865 by Kekulé that benzene nucleus exists with cyclic skeleton is considered to be the beginning of aromatic chemistry. Since then, a myriad of cyclic molecules displaying aromatic property have been synthesized. Meanwhile, borazine (B3N3H6), despite the isostructural and isoelectronic relationships with benzene, exhibits little aromaticity. Herein, we report the synthesis of a 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine (B2C2N2R6) derivative, a hybrid inorganic/organic benzene, and we present experimental and computational evidence for its aromaticity. In marked contrast to the reactivity of benzene, borazine, and even azaborinines previously reported, 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine readily forms the adducts with methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate and phenylacetylene without any catalysts. Moreover, 1,3,2,5-diazadiborine activates carbon dioxide giving rise to a bicycle[2,2,2] product, and the binding process was found to be reversible. These results, thus, demonstrate that 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine features both nucleophilic and electrophilic boron centres, with a formal B(+I)/B(+III) mixed valence system, in the aromatic six-membered B2C2N2 ring. Boron atoms in aromatic heterocycles typically behave simply as electron pair acceptors. Here, the authors report an aromatic system containing both electrophilic and nucleophilic boron atoms, and demonstrate how this imparts frustrated Lewis pair type reactivity, including binding of carbon dioxide.
