Self-assembly of chiral luminescent lanthanide coordination bundles

Recent Highlights in the use of Lanthanide-directed Synthesis of Novel Supramolecular (Luminescent) Self-assembly Structures such as Coordination Bundles, Helicates and Sensors

In this short review, we focus on the recent developments within the field of coordination chemistry where mono- or multimetallic supramolecular self-assemblies are formed by employing structurally defined organic ligands, taking advantage of the high coordination requirements of the lanthanides. Such synthesis results in the formation of both structurally complex and beautiful self-assemblies. Moreover, as the lanthanide ions possess both unique magnetic (e.g. GdIII and DyIII) and luminescent properties, either in the visible (EuIII, SmIII and TbIII) or near-infrared regions (YbIII, NdIII, ErIII), these physical features are usually transferred to the self-assemblies themselves, allowing the formation of highly functional structures, such as coordination networks, as well as molecular bundles and helicates. Hence, examples of the use of lanthanide-directed synthesis of luminescent sensors, some of which are formed on solid surfaces such as gold (flat surface or nanoparticles), and imaging agents are presented. Moreover, we demonstrate that by using chiral organic ligands, lanthanide-directed synthesis can also give rise to the formation of enantiomerically pure self-assemblies, the structure of which can be probed using circularly polarized luminescence.

Constructing cerium supramolecular wheels and encapsulating uranium with a Schiff-base calixpyrrole ligand

Trinuclear, supramolecular wheel structures are formed spontaneously from the metallation of a Schiff-base-pyrrole macrocycle by Ce³⁺ cations, while the related actinide U³⁺ cation is instead oxidised to U⁴⁺ and encapsulated.

Luminescent chiral lanthanide(III) complexes as potential molecular probes

This perspective gives an introduction into the design of luminescent lanthanide(iii)-containing complexes possessing chiral properties and used to probe biological materials. The first part briefly describes general principles, focusing on the optical aspect (i.e. lanthanide luminescence, sensitization processes) of the most emissive trivalent lanthanide ions, europium and terbium, incorporated into molecular luminescent edifices. This is followed by a short discussion on the importance of chirality in the biological and pharmaceutical fields. The second part is devoted to the assessment of the chiroptical spectroscopic tools available (typically circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence) and the strategies used to introduce a chiral feature into luminescent lanthanide(iii) complexes (chiral structure resulting from a chiral arrangement of the ligand molecules surrounding the luminescent center or presence of chiral centers in the ligand molecules). Finally, the last part illustrates these fundamental principles with recent selected examples of such chiral luminescent lanthanide-based compounds used as potential probes of biomolecular substrates.

Circularly polarized luminescence in enantiopure europium and terbium complexes with modular, all-oxygen donor ligands

The modular syntheses of three new octadentate, enantiopure ligands are reported, one with the bidentate chelating unit 2-hydroxyisophthalamide (IAM) and two with bidentate 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinone (1,2-HOPO) units. A new design principle is introduced for the chiral, non-racemic hexamines which constitute the central backbones for the presented class of ligands. The terbium(III) complex of the IAM ligand, as well as the europium(III) complexes of the 1,2-HOPO ligands, are synthesized and characterized by various techniques (NMR, UV, CD, luminescence spectroscopy). All species exhibit excellent stability and moderate to high luminescence efficiency (quantum yields Phi(Eu) = 0.05-0.08 and Phi(Tb) = 0.30-0.57) in aqueous solution at physiological pH. Special focus is put onto the properties of the complexes in regard to circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The maximum luminescence dissymmetry factors (g(lum)) in aqueous solution are high with |g(lum)|(max) = 0.08-0.40. Together with the very favorable general properties (good stability, high quantum yields, long lifetimes), the presented lanthanide complexes can be considered as good candidates for analytical probes based on CPL in biologically relevant environments.

Luminescent self-assembly formation on a gold surface observed by reversible 'off-on' switching of Eu(III) emission

The formation of a self-assembly between a sensitising antenna and an Eu(III) functionalised cyclen complex 1.Eu, tethered to a gold surface via a C(12) alkyl thiol spacer, is described where changes in the Eu(III) emission signal the formation, and dissociation, of a ternary complex.

trans-{1,8-Bis[(R)-α-methylbenzyl]-1,3,6,8,10,13-hexaazacyclotetradecane}dithiocyanatonickel(II)

The title compound, [Ni(NCS)₂(C₂₄H₃₈N₆)], is a thio­cyanate-coordinated aza­macrocyclic nickel(II) complex. There are two independent mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit and their bond lengths and angles are similar. Both Ni atoms have a tetra­gonally distorted octa­hedral geometry, in which the Ni^II ion is coordinated by the four secondary N atoms of the aza­macrocyclic ligand and by two N atoms of the thio­cyanate ions. The average equatorial Ni—N bond lengths are shorter than the average axial Ni—N bond lengths [2.071 (1) and 2.115 (2) Å, respectively]. N—H⋯S hydrogen-bonding inter­actions between a secondary amine N atom and the adjacent thio­cyanate ion leads to a polymeric chain along [100].

Helical lanthanide(III) complexes with chiral nonaaza macrocycle

The chiral nonaazamacrocyclic amine L, which is a reduction product of the 3 + 3 Schiff base macrocycle, wraps around the lanthanide(III) ions to form enantiopure helical complexes. These Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Eu(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Er(III), Yb(III) and Lu(III) complexes have been isolated in enantiopure form and have been characterized by spectroscopic methods. X-ray crystal structures of the Ln(III) complexes with L show that the thermodynamic product of the complexation of the RRRRRR-isomer of the macrocycle is the (M)-helical complex in the case of Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III) and Eu(III). In contrast, the (P)-helical complex is the thermodynamic product in the case of Yb(III) and Lu(III). The NMR and CD spectra show that the (M)-helicity for the kinetic complexation product of the RRRRRR-isomer of the macrocycle is preferred for all investigated lanthanide(III) ions, while the preferred helicity of the thermodynamic product is (M) for the early lanthanide(III) ions and (P) for the late lanthanide(III) ions. In the case of the late lanthanide(III) ions, a slow inversion of helicity between the kinetic (M)-helical product and the thermodynamic (P)-helical product is observed in solution. For Er(III), Yb(III) and Lu(III) both forms have been isolated in pure form and characterized by NMR and CD. The analysis of 2D NMR spectra of the Lu(III) complex reveals the NOE correlations that prove that the helical structure is retained in solution. The NMR spectra also reveal large isotopic effect on the 1H NMR shifts of paramagnetic Ln(III) complexes, related to NH/ND exchange. Photophysical measurements show that L(RRRRRR) appears to favor an efficient 3pipi*-to-Ln energy transfer process taking place for Eu(III) and Tb(III), but these Eu(III)- and Tb(III)-containing complexes with L(RRRRRR) lead to small luminescent quantum yields due to an incomplete intersystem crossing (isc) transfer, a weak efficiency of the luminescence sensitization by the ligand, and/or efficient nonradiative deactivation processes. Circularly polarized luminescence on the MeOH solutions of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes confirms the presence of stable chiral emitting species and the observation of almost perfect mirror-image CPL spectra for these compounds with both enantiomeric forms of L.

Extraordinary circularly polarized luminescence activity exhibited by cesium tetrakis(3-heptafluoro-butylryl-(+)-camphorato) Eu(III) complexes in EtOH and CHCl3 solutions

The largest CPL activity ever measured was observed for cesium tetrakis(3-heptafluoro-butylryl-(+)-camphorato) Eu(III) complexes in EtOH and CHCl3 solutions substantiating the stereospecific formation of chiral Delta-SAPR-(C4) configuration with the aid of Cs+...FC (fluorocarbon) interactions more clearly than the exciton CD spectra.

A promising change in the selection of the circular polarization excitation used in the measurement of Eu(III) circularly polarized luminescence

A judicious change in the selected transition used for circular polarization excitation will overcome the low oscillator strength limitation of the currently allowed magnetic-dipole (5)D1 <-- (7)F2 (Eu(III)) transition chosen for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement. The proposed allowed magnetic-dipole (5)D1 <-- (7)F0 (Eu(III)) transition will facilitate the detection of CPL from the Eu(III) systems of interest. CPL on the acetonitrile solution of the chiral tris complex of Eu(III) with (R,R)-N,N'-bis(1-phenylethyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ([Eu((R,R)-1)3](3+)), recently suggested as an effective and reliable CPL calibrating agent, confirms the feasibility of the proposed experimental procedure. A comparable CPL activity exhibited by the acetonitrile solution of [Eu((R,R)-1)3](3+) following direct excitation in the spectral range of the (5)D1 <-- (7)F0 transition and upon indirect excitation through the ligand absorption bands (lambda(exc) = 308 nm) was observed. This confirms that the recommended magnetic-dipole allowed absorption transition, (5)D1 <-- (7)F0, is the transition to be considered in the measurement of CPL. This work provides critical direction for the continued instrumental improvements that can be done for developing CPL into a biomolecular structural probe.
