Abstract
The first general β-selective C-H arylation of pyrroles has been developed by using a rhodium catalyst. This C-H arylation reaction, which is retrosynthetically straightforward but results in unusual regioselectivity, could result in de novo syntheses of pyrrole-derived natural products and pharmaceuticals. As such, we have successfully synthesized polycyclic marine pyrrole alkaloids, lamellarins C and I, by using this β-selective arylation of pyrroles with aryl iodides (C-H/C-I coupling) and a new double C-H/C-H coupling as key steps.

Abstract
An efficient phosphine-free direct C-H arylation of thiophenes at the α-position has been developed at low catalyst loading of bis(alkoxo)palladium complex (Cat.I, 0.1-0.2 mol %). The developed synthetic method can be applied to the synthesis of α-aryl/heteroaryl thiophenes from aryl or heteroaryl bromides in good to excellent yields and is compatible with the substrates bearing electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups. The reactivities of the 2- and 5-positions of thiophenes are equivalent and not dependent on steric hindrance under optimal conditions. This condition can also be applied to other heterocyclic moieties such as benzothiophene, benzofuran, and pyrrole with high conversion yields.

Abstract
An experimentally simple method has been developed to rapidly establish the stability of widely utilized silyl, acetal, and carbamate protecting groups to a given set of reaction conditions. Assessment of up to twelve protecting groups in a single experiment has been demonstrated. Evaluation of this protocol in two unrelated synthetic transformations suggests that this method can be used to select appropriate protecting groups in the design of synthetic routes.

Abstract
The completely C3-selective arylation of thiophenes and benzo[b]thiophenes was achieved by using Pd/C as a heterogeneous catalyst without ligands or additives under mild reaction conditions. The practicability of this transformation is demonstrated by notable functional group tolerance and the insensitivity of the reaction to H2 O and air. This method is also applicable to nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocycles, yielding the corresponding C2-arylated products. Three-phase tests along with Hg-poisoning and hot-filtration tests suggest that the catalytically active species is heterogeneous in nature.

Abstract
The coupling of aryl halides with catalytically activated aryl C-H bonds provides a desirable and atom-economical alternative to standard cross-coupling reactions for the construction of new C-C bonds. The reaction, termed direct (hetero)arylation, is believed to follow a base-assisted, concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) pathway. During this process, carboxylate or carbonate anions coordinate to the metal center, typically palladium, in situ and assist in the deprotonation transition state. Researchers have employed this methodology with numerous arenes and heteroarenes, including substituted benzenes, perfluorinated benzenes, and thiophenes. Thiophene substrates have demonstrated high reactivity toward C-H bond activation when appropriately substituted with electron-rich and/or electron-deficient groups. Because of the pervasive use of thiophenes in materials for organic electronics, researchers have used this chemistry to modularly prepare conjugated small molecules and, more recently, conjugated polymers. Although optimization of reaction conditions such as solvent system, phosphine ligand, carboxylate additives, temperature, and time is necessary for efficient C-H bond reactivity of each monomer, direct (hetero)arylation polymerization (DHAP) can afford high yielding polymeric materials with elevated molecular weights. The properties of these materials often rival those of polymers prepared by traditional methods. Moreover, DHAP provides a facile means for the synthesis of polymers that were previously inaccessible or difficult to prepare due to the instability of organometallic monomers. The major downfall of direct (hetero)arylation, however, is the lack of C-H bond selectivity, particularly for thiophene substrates, which can result in cross-linked material during polymerization reactions. Further fine-tuning of reaction conditions such as temperature and reaction time may suppress these unwanted side reactions. Alternatively, new monomers can be designed where other reactive bonds are blocked, either sterically or by substitution with unreactive alkyl or halogen groups. In this Account, we illustrate these methods and present examples of DHAP reactions that involve the preparation of common homopolymers used in organic electronics (P3HT, PEDOT, PProDOT), copolymers formed by activation of electron-rich (bithiophene, fused bithiophenes) and electron-deficient monomers (TPD, 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, 2,2'-bithiazole). Our group is optimizing these reactions and developing ways to make DHAP a common atom-economical synthetic tool for polymer chemists.

Abstract
The first completely selective C3 C-H arylation of benzo[b]thiophenes is reported, demonstrating previously unexploited reactivity of palladium. Benzo[b]thiophenes are coupled with readily available aryl chlorides using a ligand-free, dual catalytic system of heterogeneous Pd/C and CuCl. The reaction is operationally simple and insensitive to air and moisture, and it provides valuable products with complete selectivity. Significant investigations into the nature of the active catalytic species and mechanistic considerations are discussed.

Abstract
The direct C-H-bond arylation of the complex spirocyclic lactones 13, 14, and 18 allows the introduction of diverse aryl moieties in the last step of the synthesis. A selective α-arylation of the thiophene moiety was performed with the catalytic system PdCl2/2,2'-bipyridyl/Ag2CO3, whereas the β-position of the thiophene ring was addressed by using the alternative catalytic system PdCl2/P[OCH(CF3)2]3/Ag2CO3. Due to electronic and steric reasons the arylation of the five-membered lactone 18 occurred in both α-positions providing 4'-mono-, 6'-mono- and 4',6'-diarylated thiophenes 22-26a-c. Compounds with an additional aryl moiety at the 'upper left (top)' position (1'-position of 13, 3'-position of 14, 4'-position of 18) showed increased σ1 affinity compared to the non-arylated parent compounds. A phenyl moiety at the 'left' position (2'-position in 20a) also increased the σ1 affinity but to a lower extent. A considerable reduction of σ1 affinity was observed after introducing an aryl moiety in 6'-position of 18, which might result from shielding the tertiary amine, which is crucial for interaction with the σ1 receptor. The discussion of the experimental results is supported by high-level quantum chemical DFT-calculations of the NBO-charges of 13 and 18 and the relative energies of the related arylated products.

Abstract
The higher reactivity of C5-H bonds of heteroarenes as compared to C-H bonds of bromopolyfluorobenzenes for palladium-catalyzed direct arylation allows the selective synthesis of the polyfluoroaryl-heteroarenes in moderate to high yields, without C-H bond functionalization of the polyfluorobenzene ring. In most cases, low loading of Pd(OAc)2 catalyst (0.5-1 mol %) was employed. Then, from these heteroarylated polyfluorobenzenes, the palladium-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization of the polyfluorobenzene ring allows the synthesis of heteroarylated polyfluorobiphenyls.
