Elaborate Design of Ag8Au10 Cluster [2]Catenane Phosphors for High-Efficiency Light-Emitting Devices

In this work, rational design of highly soluble and phosphorescent Ag-Au cluster complexes with exceptional [2]catenane structures is conducted using 1,8-diethynyl-9H-carbazole (H₃decz) as a rigid U-shaped ligand with a distinguished hole-transport character. The self-assembly reaction of H₃decz, Au⁺, and Ag⁺ generated phosphorescent Ag₄Au₆ cluster 1 (Φ_em = 0.22 in CH₂Cl₂) with H₂decz^- having a free ethynyl (-C≡CH) group. When the four free C≡CH groups in the Ag₄Au₆ complex 1 are further bound to four (PPh₃)Au⁺ and four (PPh₃)Ag⁺ moieties through M-acetylide linkages, the formation of Ag₈Au₁₀ cluster 2 not only eliminates nonradiative ethynyl C-H vibrational deactivation process but also improves dramatically the molecular rigidity so that the phosphorescent efficiency of the Ag₈Au₁₀ cluster 2 (Φ_em = 0.63) is nearly 3 times that of the Ag₄Au₆ cluster 1. The Ag₈Au₁₀ cluster structure is further rigidified using diphsophine Ph₂P(CH₂)₄PPh₂ (dppb) in place of PPh₃ so that the phosphorescence of the Ag₈Au₁₀ cluster 3 (Φ_em = 0.77) is more efficient than that of 2. Making use of the Ag₈Au₁₀ clusters as phosphorescent dopants, high-efficiency solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were achieved with current efficiency (CE) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 47.2 cd A^-1 and 15.7% for complex 2 and 50.5 cd A^-1 and 14.9% for complex 3.

Structural Diversity of Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks and Effect on Adsorption of Toxic Chemicals

While linkers with various conformations pose challenges in the design and prediction of metal-organic framework (MOF) structures, they ultimately provide great opportunities for the discovery of novel structures thereby enriching structural diversity. Tetratopic carboxylate linkers, for example, have been widely used in the formation of Zr-based MOFs due to the ability to target diverse topologies, providing a promising platform to explore their mechanisms of formation. However, it remains a challenge to control the resulting structures when considering the complex assembly of linkers with unpredicted conformations and diverse Zr₆ node connectivities. Herein, we systematically explore how solvents and modulators employed during synthesis influence the resulting topologies of Zr-MOFs, choosing H₄TCPB-Br₂ (1,4-dibromo-2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene) as a representative tetratopic carboxylate linker. By modulating the reaction conditions, the conformations of the linker and the connectivities of the Zr₆ node can be simultaneously tuned, resulting in four types of structures: a new topology (NU-500), she (NU-600), scu (NU-906), and csq (NU-1008). Importantly, we have synthesized the first 5-connected Zr₆ node to date with the (4,4,4,5)-connected framework, NU-500. We subsequently performed detailed structural analyses to uncover the relationship between the structures and topologies of these MOFs and demonstrated the crucial role that the flexible linker played to access varied structures by different degrees of linker deformation. Due to a variety of pore structures ranging from micropores to hierarchical micropores and mesopores, the resulting MOFs show drastically different behaviors for the adsorption of n-hexane and dynamic adsorption of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) under dry and humid conditions.

Heterometallic {ZnEu}-metal-organic framework for efficient chemical fixation of CO2

Based on a ligand-directed synthetic strategy, the acidic solvothermal reaction of ZnO, Eu2O3, and 4,4',4''-(pyridine-2,4,6-triyl)tri(1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid) (H6PTTBA) generated a targeted robust double-walled honeycomb material {[EuIIIZnII(HPTTBA)(H2O)]·4DMF·3H2O}n (simplified as NUC-9), which featured excellent characteristics such as dual tubular nanochannels, high porosity, specific surface area, abundant exposed active metal sites, etc. Although both types of nano-channels (I and II) alternately arranged in the lattice and shaped by six rows of [EuIIIZnII(CO2)6(H2O)] SBUs possessed an equal amount of exposed active metal sites, they could be differentiated according to the discrepant inner surface functionalized by free carboxyl oxygen atoms or coordinated aqueous molecules. Moreover, an activated sample of NUC-9 exhibited better catalytic performance than documented Zn- or Eu-based MOFs for the chemical transformation of various epoxides into the related carbonates under comparatively mild conditions of 1 atm CO2 flow and 70 °C, which should be ascribed to the unsaturated Zn2+ and Eu3+ ions acting as strong Lewis acid sites and free carboxyl oxygen atoms as basic sites synergistically polarizing and activating the substrates of epoxides and CO2 and consequently promoting the reaction. Furthermore, the water-resistant framework of NUC-9 could selectively and sensitively discriminate Fe3+ in aqueous solution according to the fluorescence quenching effect. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the successful self-assembly of NUC-9 provides an effective synthetic technique by employing the designed favorable organic ligand for achieving the targeted functional model of MOFs.

The Relevance of Size Matching in Self-assembly: Impact on Regio- and Chemoselective Cocrystallizations

Decamethonium diiodide is reported to perform the chemo- and regioselective encapsulation of para-dihalobenzenes through the competitive formation of halogen-bonded cocrystals starting from solutions that also contain ortho and meta isomers. Selective caging in the solid occurs even when an excess ortho or meta isomers, or even a mixture of them, is present in the solution. A prime matching between the size and shape of the dication and the formed dianions plays a key role in enabling the selective self-assembly, as proven by successful encapsulation of halogen-bond donors as weak as 1,4-dichlorobenzene and by the results of cocrystallization trials involving mismatching tectons. Encapsulated para-dihalobenzenes guest molecules can be removed quantitatively by heating the cocrystals under reduced pressure and be recovered as pure materials. The residual decamethonium diiodide can be recycled with no reduction in selectivity.

Efficient Identification for Alcohol Homologues and Hyperthermy Based on Coordination Polymer Multiple Structural Transformations

Recently, coordination polymer materials are of high interest due to the potential applications for chemical sensing and luminescent materials. In this work, we designed a photofluorescence coordination polymer material based on a donor-metal-acceptor structure. The donor-metal-acceptor architecture showed unusual multiple environmental responsiveness accompanied by a great change of fluorescence behaviors. Generally, organic homologue molecules are not easily distinguished by coordination polymer sensors because they have similar molecular structures and interaction sites. However, using the feature of multiple structural transformations, the accurate identification for organic homologue molecules can be realized, especially in a short time to quickly identify MeOH in other alcohol homologues (even in mixed atmospheres with only 10% MeOH). The visualization transformation of fluorescence can also be realized by single crystal to single crystal thermal-induced coordination bond ON/OFF behavior. The reversible structure conversion strategy provides new ideas for the accurate identification of organic homolog molecules or external environmental stimuli.

Effecting structural diversity in a series of Co(II)-organic frameworks by the interplay between rigidity of a dicarboxylate and flexibility of bis(tridentate) spanning ligands

In a one-pot self-assembly reaction of Co(OAc)2·4H2O, thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2tdc) and four different bis(tridentate) polypyridyl spanning ligands under ambient conditions, a series of structurally diverse metal-organic frameworks has been synthesised and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction: {[Co2(tdc)2(tpbn)(H2O)2]·solvent}n (solvent = 2H2O, 1; solvent = 2CH3OH, 2H2O, 1a), {[Co2(tdc)2(tphn)]·solvent}n (solvent = H2O, 2; solvent = CH3OH, 2.5H2O, 2a), {[Co2(tdc)2(tpchn)(H2O)2]·solvent}n (solvent = 5H2O, 3; solvent = C2H5OH, 2H2O, 3a), and {[Co2(tdc)2(tpxn)]·solvent}n (solvent = 6H2O, 4; when no solvent, 4a), where tpbn (N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4-diaminobutane), tphn = N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,6-diaminohexane, tpchn = N,N'-(cyclohexane-1,4-diylbis(methylene))bis(1-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine) and tpxn = N,N'-(1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(1-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine). There is a profound effect of the nature of spacer between the alkyl nitrogens in the spanning ligands (flexible vs. semiflexible) on the molecular structures of 1a-4a. The notable differences are (a) the binding mode of the tridentate part of polypyridyl ligands to the Co(ii) center is facial in 1a, 3a and 4a but meridional in 2a, (b) the Co(ii) centers in 1a-3a are hexacoordinated (with a coordinated water in 1a and 3a) but are pentacoordinated in 4a, and (c) the binding mode of tdc linker is bis(monodentate) in 1a, 3a and 4a but chelated in one end and monodentate in the other end in 2a. Thus, the overall framework structure of 1a, 2a, 3a and 4a is cis-decalin type 2D polymer, ladder-shaped 1D polymer, hexagonal 2D net and cis-decalin type 2D polymer, respectively. Their thermal stabilities have been established by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The presence of an unsaturated metal center in 4 has provided us an opportunity for its use as an efficient Lewis acid catalyst for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of malononitrile with various aldehydes (100% conversion in 60 minutes with 2 mol% catalyst in methanol).
