Abstract
Enantioselective catalysis of excited-state photoreactions remains a substantial challenge in synthetic chemistry, and intermolecular photoreactions have proven especially difficult to conduct in a stereocontrolled fashion. Herein, we report a highly enantioselective intermolecular [2 + 2] cycloaddition of 3-alkoxyquinolones catalyzed by a chiral hydrogen-bonding iridium photosensitizer. Enantioselectivities as high as 99% ee were measured in reactions with a range of maleimides and other electron-deficient alkene reaction partners. An array of kinetic, spectroscopic, and computational studies supports a mechanism in which the photocatalyst and quinolone form a hydrogen-bonded complex to control selectivity, yet upon photoexcitation of this complex, energy transfer sensitization of maleimide is preferred. The sensitized maleimide then reacts with the hydrogen-bonded quinolone-photocatalyst complex to afford a highly enantioenriched cycloadduct. This finding contradicts a long-standing tenet of enantioselective photochemistry that held that stereoselective photoreactions require strong preassociation to the sensitized substrate in order to overcome the short lifetimes of electronically excited organic molecules. This system therefore suggests that a broader range of alternate design strategies for asymmetric photocatalysis might be possible.

Abstract
The intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition of 3‐alkenyl‐2‐cycloalkenones was performed in an enantioselective fashion (nine representative examples, 54–86 % yield, 76–96 % ee) upon irradiation at λ=366 nm in the presence of an AlBr3‐activated oxazaborolidine as the Lewis acid. An extensive screening of proline‐derived oxazaborolidines showed that the enantioface differentiation depends strongly on the nature of the aryl group at the 3‐position of the heterocycle. DFT calculations of the Lewis acid–substrate complex indicate that attractive dispersion forces may be responsible for a change of the binding mode. The catalytic [2+2] photocycloaddition was shown to proceed on the triplet hypersurface with a quantum yield of 0.05. The positive effect of Lewis acids on the outcome of a given intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition was illustrated by optimizing the key step in a concise total synthesis of the sesquiterpene (±)‐italicene.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterisation of a series of [RuII (bpy)2 L] and [Ir(ppy)2 L] complexes containing ligands L with the potential to engage in triple hydrogen bonding interactions is described. L1 and L2 comprise pyridyl triazole chelating units with pendant diaminotriazine units, capable of donor-acceptor-donor (DAD) hydrogen bonding, while L3 and L4 contain ADA hydrogen bonding units proximal to N^N and N^O cleating sites, respectively. X-ray crystallography shows the L1 and L2 containing RuII complexes to assemble via R 2 2 8 hydrogen bonding dimers, while [RuII (bpy)2 L4] assembles via extended hydrogen bonding motifs to form one dimensional chains. By contrast, the expected hydrogen bonding patterns are not observed for the RuII and IrIII complexes of L3. Spectroscopic studies show that the absorption spectra of the complexes result from combinations of MLCT and LLCT transitions. The L1 and L2 complexes of IrIII and RuII complexes are emissive in the solid state and it seems likely that hydrogen bonding to complementary species may facilitate tuning of their 3 ILCT emission. Low frequency Raman spectra provide further evidence for ordered interactions in the solid state for the L4 complexes, consistent with the results from X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
A system for the directed hydrogenation of nitrogen heterocycles is described in which hydrogen is delivered cis to a hydroxymethyl group by a rhodium catalyst with a simple phosphine ligand. The chemistry is applied to the synthesis of the hygric acid moiety of lincomycin and the pipecolic acid moiety of Argatroban. A series of control experiments indicate that the stereoselectivity is a result of a combination of both coordination and hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
An intramolecular dearomatization of indole derivatives based on visible-light-promoted [2+2] cycloaddition was achieved via energy transfer mechanism. The highly strained cyclobutane-fused angular tetracyclic spiroindolines, which were typically unattainable under thermal conditions, could be directly accessed in high yields (up to 99%) with excellent diastereoselectivity (>20:1 dr) under mild conditions. The method was also compatible with diverse functional groups and amenable to flexible transformations. In addition, DFT calculations provided guidance on the rational design of substrates and deep understanding of the reaction pathways. This process constituted a rare example of indole functionalization by exploiting visible-light-induced reactivity at the excited states.

Abstract
3-Allyl-substituted quinolones undergo a triplet-sensitized di-π-methane rearrangement reaction to the corresponding 3-cyclopropylquinolones upon irradiation with visible light (λ=420 nm). A chiral hydrogen-bonding sensitizer (10 mol %) was shown to promote the reaction enantioselectively (88-96 % yield, 32-55 % ee). Surprisingly, it was found that the enantiodifferentiation does not occur at the state of initial product formation but that it is the result of a deracemization event. The individual parameters that control the distribution of enantiomers in the photostationary state have been identified.

Abstract
Visible-light photocatalysis is a rapidly developing and powerful strategy to initiate organic transformations, as it closely adheres to the tenants of green and sustainable chemistry. Generally, most visible-light-induced photochemical reactions occur through single-electron transfer (SET) pathways. Recently, visible-light-induced energy-transfer (EnT) reactions have received considerable attentions from the synthetic community as this strategy provides a distinct reaction pathway, and remarkable achievements have been made in this field. In this Review, we highlight the most recent advances in visible-light-induced EnT reactions.

Abstract
The first law of photochemistry, as described by Theodor von Grotthuß and John W. Draper, states that only the light absorbed by the irradiated matter can effect photochemical change. Consequently, the photochemical behavior of a molecule can be controlled by bringing its absorbance properties in line with the emission of the light source. A compound with a chromophore that only absorbs light at short wavelengths will not be excited by light of longer wavelengths. If one can reversibly modify the photophysical properties of a compound with a chemical activator, then it is possible to photoexcite only the activated species. For α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, the use of Lewis acids, Brønsted acids, or the formation of the respective iminium ions can bring about the desired chromophore activation to catalyze a photochemical reaction at a given wavelength. In this Minireview, the concept of chromophore activation will be illustrated, and examples of its implementation in enantioselective catalysis will be discussed.

Abstract
Harnessing visible light to access excited (triplet) states of organic compounds can enable impressive reactivity modes. This tutorial review covers the photophysical fundamentals and most significant advances in the field of visible-light-mediated energy transfer catalysis within the last decade. Methods to determine excited triplet state energies and to characterize the underlying Dexter energy transfer are discussed. Synthetic applications of this field, divided into four main categories (cyclization reactions, double bond isomerizations, bond dissociations and sensitization of metal complexes), are also examined.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of alkylidene malonates with the internal C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond of N-allenamides was developed with a MgII/N,N'-dioxide complex as a catalyst. Various polysubstituted methylenecyclobutanes were afforded in good yields (up to 99%) and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 96% ee) under mild conditions. The utility of the donor-acceptor cyclobutane product was demonstrated as a masked 1,4-dipole in the formal [4+2] annulation reaction with a silyl enol ether.

Abstract
The first synthesis of hebelophyllene E is presented, along with assignment of its previously unknown relative configuration through synthesis of epi-ent-hebelophyllene E. Development of a catalytic enantioselective [2+2] cycloaddition of alkenes and allenoates provides access to the required chiral geminal dimethylcyclobutanes. Key to its success is the identification of a novel oxazaborolidine catalyst which promotes the cycloaddition in high enantioselectivities with good functional-group tolerance (9 examples, up to 97:3 e.r.). Thus, a late-stage cycloaddition using a fully functionalized alkene, followed by a diastereoselective reduction allows a concise entry to this class of natural products.
